January 13, 2009 - Tuesday

Todays Gazette is brought to you by the Ogden Iron Works, Ogden,
California.
----------------------
The current temperature is -35 degrees.
The "feels like" temperature is -49
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 10/-31
Normal H/L temp for this date is 14/-5
It was 42 degrees on this date in 1942
It is 107 degrees colder outside by Sami's fire hydrant than it is in
our living room.
Wouldn't this be a super day for Al Gore to hold a global warming
seminar in northern North Dakota?

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
I wouldn't be surprised that some folks have already noticed that once
in awhile I make reference to the former Getz Drug Store building as
Getz' Great Gift to Grafton. The former Walsh County Bank building, on
the other hand, was given to the citizens of our city with the kind
disregards of someone in South Dakota,..... I think.
Anyway, the last time I mentioned our two most prominent sailboat fuel
storage facilities, it gave cause for someone to share the following
thought. >>>>>
Subject: Getz Drug
Hi Gary. Wishing I was a millionaire and could afford to tear down both
the Getz Drug and old bank building to open the area for a GREAT gazebo
and memorial park "The Joe Birkeland City Square". So apropos,
considering a lot of people spent a lot of evenings enjoying Joe's
wonderful [and very special] talent near that very location. If anyone
has ever been to Woodstock, Ill. Just outside of Chicago, they'll see a
wonderful "City Square", with the farmers displaying fresh fruits,
veggies, flowers and fresh pies and pastries every Sat. a.m. Wouldn't it
be great to have our own "Farmer's Market"?? I'm still a dreamer. Thanks
for all you do. No Name Hugs to you and Pat.
<<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing. I think The Joe Birkeland
City Square Idea is a fantastic one. It would be a wonderful addition,
and attraction, to the downtown Grafton business district.

== SUGARBEET --- FACTS ==
The first belt-type conveyor beet receiving station was a 1936 model
Ogden car loader and storage piling machine installed at Salt Creek,
Colorado. It was a wonderful improvement over the chain-type John Deere
receiving station.

St.Thomas area pioneer sugarbeet farmer Floyd Green started growing
sugarbeets in 1929 and received about $7.00 per ton for his 1929 beet
crop.

PLEASE - REMEMBER - SATURDAY
Chili Feed (a variety of chili's) and Silent Auction Fundraiser to be
held at Heritage Village this Saturday, Jan 17 from 11am til 1pm.
Price $6.00 per plate.
The Silent Auction will begin at 1pm. I believe they could still use
any additional items you may have for the auction. They can be dropped
off at the Village in the main entrance, or Thursday, Friday evenings
from 6-9pm. Or,.... you can call 701-520-1207. <<<<

I see by the notice on cable channel 3 that the folks at Heritage
Village & Jugville still haven't reached their goal for the "FURNACE
FUND". It would be interesting to know how close they are to installing
the new furnace. Minus 35 degrees below zero temperatures isn't the best
time to have a furnace fall apart.
-------------------------
Just the other day, a local area resident asked me a question that
gives cause for concern. It was, most certainly, a very valid question
and one that I would have hoped "no-one" living in our area would have
to ask.
In light of "the question", I believe It would behoove our community
leadership, the City Council, our Chamber of Commerce and every business
manager as well as each and every citizen of our community to strive to
find the answer/s to it. --- "What does this community have to offer?"
----
It is all to apparent, to me, that far to few people in our area
actually know the myriad of advantages Grafton has to offer.
Or so it seems to me.

I am pleased welcome Sara and Jon to the Gazette family tree. Our
family tree is slowly evolving into a entire grove.
