Todays Gazette is bought to you, wishing YVETTE MOE a very HAPPY
BIRTHDAY
She's the wife of our eldest son Jeff so she's already earned her way
to heaven. She mothered three of our grandchildren, for that too, we are
very pleased. From the first day Yvette joined our family, she improved
our family tree.
I would have mentioned how many candles it takes to light your cake.
But the billboard on the corner of 81 and 17 has already done all that.
Happy Birthday Yvette we love you,
from Mother Patti and from me.

A cross section of my recent emails looks more like a serious planning
session for the third world war, than sharing the joys and happiness of
winning a state championship.
Sharing them all would be right next to impossible. Trying to decide
which ones to use, at what level of frustration, and and probably the
most important factor. Was trying to decide how long one should allow
the events of last week to fester.
To that end I have decided to use only those comments leaning toward
positive rather than negative. I would like to thank all those that took
the opportunity to share their views and opinions. I sincerely hope the
ability to "vent" your feelings without creating serious detrimental
ramifications will help put the past exactly where it belongs,... in the
past.

Dr. Gaustad sent the following comments to Mayor Burianeks message in

Subject: A Class Act
Dear Gary:
The community of Grafton is so fortunate to have Todd Burianek as
our Mayor. The comments he made in his e-mail message to you is
totally a class act. He brings to focus the really important aspects
of life that leads our young people into having a successful
future.
Congratulations to all our Grafton Spoiler athletes.
Winning two state championship trophies this year is an awesome
achievement and a real challenge to the Spoiler athletes of the
future.

Tami shared the following comments, and I believe a lesson for us all.
>>>
Gary:
Kudos to your Grafton Spoilers. Although I live in Grand Forks (formerly
from Grafton!) and my son plays hockey, I am appalled at the comments I
have heard and read regarding the championship game. (mostly 2nd hand
information, but it's out there) Some of the comments are simply kids
being kids....but...I think as a parent we must monitor the harshness of
the comments and what they represent. Bad sportsmanship.
The referees obvious mistake of not blowing the whistle for too many men
on the ice when the tying goal was made should be more than clear to
anyone who either attended the game, watched it on tv or watched it on
"you tube". When someone makes a mistake, it is simply that. A mistake.
Mistakes happen in life and life goes on. As a parent I will continue to
diffuse any talk of "cheating" "not fair" "shoulda" "coulda" or "blame"
when talking with my kids about a game situation. I suggest all parents
do the same when talking sports with their kids. Teach them that
mistakes happen and will continue to happen, it's how you handle them
that count.
Tami Swiers <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Tami. In life,
everything is a lessen. How well we learn to apply them dictates our

Grafton offers several excellent foreign food eateries. From Chinese to
Mexican and Italian. From a super delicious deli presentation to Subways
scrumptious subs packed to tickle your taste buds. From Granny's early
morning breakfast to the mouth watering ribeye's and Buffalo Sirloin

My good friend Dr. Bob Harris (Roseau) has spent a lifetime around
hockey. Along with his heartfelt congratulations, he wrote the
following.
>>> Dear Gary
I read with great interest your comments on the recent state hockey
tournament. You are right on. I played and officiated for many
years and here's a tongue-in-cheek for you. I always told my new
partners that our goal was to call a game so well that we got a standing
ovation from the crowd and they didn't even know who won the game.
But I know how it really is after calling hundreds of games at all
levels including both state tourneys. There will always be criticisms
of the officials from the stands -- but it is extremely rare when the
scoreboard doesn't correctly identify the winner. Some of my most
memorable challenges were the games we called in Grafton between the
"Spoilers" and the city teams from the south. I read enough about
Grafton now so as to almost feel like an adopted ex-resident. Thanks
for the news.

If it's worth anything, here's my take on the Championship Game.
We won the game. We are the Champions. We are the best team in North
Dakota.
End of story, though I'd note that at times we controlled the play so
well I could have sworn we had six guys on the ice!!!!
I also want you (and your readers) to know that this State Championship
team was not only a champion on the ice but off as well. They, along
with the Grafton Boys Basketball Team and the Grafton Girls Basketball
Team are Scholar Athletes a designation they achieved by maintaining a
Team GPA of 3.2 or better.
As we celebrate that victory on the ice let's also celebrate their
excellence in the classroom.
Thanks boys for making the people of Grafton, Park River, Drayton, Minto
and all parts in between very proud of you.

MEMORIES, are often those simple little things that give reason, and
value to life.
I remember the first time I ever heard the term, "dressed to the 9's".
I can even remember the place and the circumstances upon which I heard
it.
I was in the garage of the flower shop, polishing the 51 Ford Woody,
when Margaret Knutson came back and said, "That women always dresses so
beautiful." Of course she was speaking of the lady in the flower shop. A
few minutes later, dad come in the back room and Margaret said the same
thing, once again, to dad.
Then, as effortlessly as I have ever heard dad speak, he said. "Why,
for God's sake Margaret, that was Ann Egeland. She is always 'dressed to
the 9's".
Having known Ann for most of my life. One thing is certain. Ann may
well have always "dressed to the 9's, but she always was, and always
will be, a 10,.... in my book.
Pat and I, and our entire family wish to extent our most sincere
sympathies to the family of Anna C. Egeland. Her dash was long and
meaningful.
I am pleased her dash includes a part of me and my family.
It saddens me to share Anns obituary.

Even though the Grand Forks Herald, and other area news media, "appear"
to be doing everything in their power to diminish the actual end result
of last weekends North Dakota High School State Hockey Tournament by
"fostering the fodder" of a group of frustrated athletic supporters. I
truly do not believe it is the personal intention of those reporters to
denigrate the members of either team involved.
Unfortunately, by allowing such fodder to fester, I suspect in the
interest of news, that is precisely what is happening.
The facts will, first and foremost,... final and forever, remain the
same. The world of could'a, would'a should'a individuals is best suited
to the tournaments of chess and checkers.
The officials that were given the responsibility to officiate the game,
did so to the very best of their ability. Although most would agree that
throughout the entire game, various infractions, on both sides, were
intentionally "overlooked". All in the interest, I'm told, of letting
the players decide the outcome of the championship event.
Unfortunately, these facts, left to the pessimist's and those suffering
from paranoia will continue to churn negativity into frustration for
several years to come.
Everyone seems to agree that the two teams fighting for this years
title did in fact belong there. The contest was played in the exact same
manner (some would argue even better) than any of there early season
encounters.
So,... one final time. I would like to extend my sincere
congratulations to the Red River High School "Roughriders" Organization
for their truly outstanding performance, throughout the season and
especially during the Championship game. AND, my heartfelt
congratulations goes out to the Grafton - Park River High School

Gary:
Thanks, as always, for the Gazette. I know few of the souls in Grafton
but your writing about them makes them real. As a married-into-member of
Roseau I know of the thrill of the hockey tournaments and the wonder of
winning. Brother-in-law Bob (Harris) who helped make a name for Roseau
in their first Minnesota state championship in 1946 and his sister Nancy
who developed the concept of Power Skating for hockey players attest to
the involvement of my wife's family in the the American version of the
Canadian sport. And here is a modest North Dakota community making its
presence felt in a greater part of the state.
My hat is off to you. May you continue to prosper and win.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
Although the Spoilers hockey team certainly has been at, or near, the
top of their game the past few days. Unfortunately, both members of the
Gazette household couldn't say the same. Both Pat and I were looking
forward to attending the State Hockey Tournaments this past weekend, as
we have for the past several years.
As it turned out, sinus infection, a runny nose, swollen hands and
feet, sore joints and muscles, headaches, and, the general feeling of
being hit by a Mack truck made the decision to stay home and listen to
the games on KXPO Radio much easier.
Okay, I'll admit, we actually did "watch" the semi and final game on
television Channel 11. There television coverage of the tournament was
super. I must admit however, at our house at least, while we were
"watching" channel 11, we were "listening" to the voice broadcast on
KXPO. Thanks a million to the KXPO Radio organization for putting
together a fantastic hockey broadcast team.
I won't waste your time with all the specifics of the tournament. The
Grand Forks Herald has already done a fabulous job of that. And, I
suspect the Walsh County Record and Walsh County Press will cover them
in this weeks editions as well.
Let it suffice to say that the Grafton - Park River Spoilers hockey
team, comprised of players and fans from several area communities and
schools, celebrated the 3 to 2 title win Saturday night. It was evident
from the initial face-off that both teams already had one hand on the
first place trophy.
Both teams displayed the kind of spirit, teamwork, and tenacity
required to win a State Championship title.
In the spirit and tradition of high school sportsmanship, I extend my
heartfelt appreciation and congratulations to the members of the
Roughriders and Spoilers teams for providing me one of the best North
Dakota State High School Hockey Tournaments I can remember.
I might also add, it appears - on television anyway - that all of the
Red River Roughrider players could be of Scandinavian decent.
How else, I wonder, could one explain the fact that every single
Roughrider player was blonde?
As always happens, when the youth of our little community excel. We
bring out all the emergency equipment possible to me them and escort
them back to town.
And,.. so it was this year. Pat and I were parked in front of Grafton
Auto Electric along hiway 17 waiting for the team. By 1:15 pm cars were
lined up on both sides of the street for many blocks, some with signs
some flashing lights and many cars packed with school age kids waving
banners while many more were standing on the curb patiently waiting for
"our" team to arrive.
Then,.... we could see flashing lights on the edge of town. At first it
looked like it would be another "normal" hero's welcome. Dozens of
lights flashing, sirens and horns blaring, people waving and
cheering,.... and then,.. then, the bus carrying to hockey team stopped.
At first I wondered why, then I noticed a couple high school students in
the middle of the street. What in the heck are they doing there,??? I
asked Pat. She said can't you see? They're sweeping the street for their
new State Champions.
WOW,... now that's a tender touch if I've ever seen one.
As the boys passed by I was blowing my horn and waving and, and,...
thanking God that everyone in that bus, and everyone waiting for that
bus represents our community in a way that not only makes us proud. They
are showing the men and women in uniform, all around the world, that
their efforts have not been in vain.
--------------------------
Not long ago I wrote about the "little" house on Summit Avenue that was
moved out to make room for additional space for a greenhouse and storage
building. I also mentioned several of it's previous tenants, including
Pat and I. I am really pleased Darlene decided to share the following.
Dear Gary,
I do have to share this with you since your information made more
memories possible for my family. On Groundhog Day we celebrated my mom's
96th birthday. The siblings who lived in our Summit Ave. house in
Grafton gathered in a van to try to locate it. We did find it, and the
owner so kindly let us explore his now home. He is remodelling it, but
there was still enough left of the old rooms to remember what they once
were. I never though I would be in that house again when I said goodbye
to each room at about age 14. Thanks again for making it possible for us
to relive old memories.
Darlene Rogalla Dyrud <<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Darlene. Aren't memories
wonderful?
-----------------------
Speaking of wonderful memories. I enjoyed reading in last weeks edition
of the Record, in the 50 years ago column.
Joe Birkeland, director of the Grafton Parade Band was handed a new
baton at the "Grafton Parade Band Family Night" party held at the social
room of the Grafton Lutheran Church, Leonard DeSautel made the
presentation. The baton was a gift from the chaperones, who accompanied
the band on the trip to Miami, Washington, and New York.
-------------------------
There is activity in and around the former Denny's Food Pride store.
The heat was turned up last week and already a few "service" vehicles
can be seen parked out front. It sure is great seeing the increased
activity at Western Plaza.
The new store Home of Economy is planning in the Western Plaza complex
will almost certainly add value to a persons trip to Grafton. Or so it
seems to me.

on stage and ended up winning over $18,000 worth of merchandise
including one of the showcases. She greeted her 3 daughters in Valley
City on the show. It will be aired on March 14. It has been lots of
excitement for all of us. We talked a lot about Grafton and still
agree it was a great place to grow up!! Thanks for your news - I
really enjoy it and it brings me "home" when I read it. I agree that

all only $50. Seriously though, I think having the World Curling
Championship is a great event for the area and hope that many of
Grafton's and the region's former state/national champions show up with
their jacket/sweaters to display their patches. Grafton and the area
have a lot to be proud of. Still could use a couple of volunteers if
anyone is interested / although we could cover with volunteers we
already have -

Although we are little more than half way through celebrating "Raumin
Gone" here at home. According to the 50 years ago column in the Record.
Pvt. Gerald C. Raumin became the 15th recruit for the Grafton's Army
National Guard Unit. The recruit was sent to the six month active duty
training program at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. The article didn't mention if
Gerald returned a pvt. or, a General. However, it doesn't take more than
one cup of coffee at Granny's to find out Gerry learned how to take
charge,.. somewhere.
Or so it seems to me.

Todays Gazette is being brought to you from 40 miles North of a daily
paper.
----------------------
The current temperature is -31.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was -8/-26
Normal H/L temp for this date is 22/6
The high no this date in 2000 was 51 degrees above. Todays record low
of 31 degrees beats the -30 posted in 1939.

=========================
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
By now, it shouldn't be a secret that I'm not one of the areas most
astute members of the athletic community. Most of the time I have to
wait for the radio announcer to tell me when a hockey game has to go
into extra innings,... and why. I'm not even always certain how many
periods there are in a football game.
However, from time to time I have mentioned the results, as I
understand them, of a hockey game or two. And, albeit less often, other
games where physical and mental dexterity plays a part in the outcome.
Anyway, with all that in mind (or not) I received the following note
suggesting that I might reevalute my position. It said, >>> "Don't you
think you should give equal time to the Grafton Girls Basketball team
that just won the district 4 championships? Also the boys basketball is
the number 1 seed in the district also. Hockey is not the only sport in
Grafton that should be recognized." <<<<
Now then, since I received this note, a few days ago, several area
athletic events have transpired. And, in the interest of "equal time" I
have not mentioned any of them,...... equally.
The fact is, the Grand Forks Herald and the Walsh County Record both do
a much better, more in depth job of reporting those events than I can
anyway. Assuming of course, that someone remembers to let them know.
However, three things I will always remember, relative to an athletic
event, I learned from my brother-in-law Ken Demester. Ken once told me
that without, proper preparation, proper conditioning, and proper
attitude going into an event. You will be competing with yourself,....
as well as your adversary.
I have since translated a portion of the "proper Attitude" to mean
"anger management".
--------------------------
It'll cost most folks around Grafton $3.10 a gallon for the liquid
from the land of the Sand Ranchers. I'm guessing the oil refinery fire
in Texas will add even more upside pressure to that number.
---------------------------
Speaking of gas. It sounds like Grafton will have another sailboat fuel
storage facility in the Western Plaza complex. Denny's Food Pride, Dr
Scheflo's Clinic and Curves (move it and lose it) are already full of
sailboat fuel. The latest "rumor" has the Subway Sandwich folks moving
into the BP Gas station on the corner of Hill Avenue and Hiway 17.
No word yet on where the "BP free coffee oasis" will be moving to.
However, the car wash will likely end up north of the present Simonson
Station Store.
Speaking of North, that's probably where the BP coffee pot will end up.
At the station on the north end of town I mean. Jet oil already keeps
their bulk oil truck there and it wouldn't take much to turn the heat up
a little and plug in a coffee pot.
And to think some folks were wondering what the heck Pete Simonson
wanted the BP gas station for. Especially when everyone already knew
that BP was pulling all of there stations out of this area.
Well,..... now we all know. It is a fantastic spot, for a Subway. We
wish them well,.... and, it will do well. Or so it seems to me.

Todays Gazette is brought to you, by Grafton's New Assistant Police

Effective January 1 of this year. Lieutenant Steve Kliniske was awarded
the rank of Captain in the Grafton Police Department. Steve was also
promoted to the position of Assistant Police Chief at that time.
Police officer Slade Herfindahl was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant
in the Grafton Police Department effective January 1 as well.
Congratulations Steve and Slade for your well deserved promotions. My
heartfelt thanks to you both, and, to all of the members of "our" local
law enforcement organization. For making "our" community a much safer
place to live.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did I mention the The Grafton - Park River Spoilers opened up a 55
gallon drum of butt whoopen on the West Fargo Packers Thursday night?
The score was 5 to 0 at the final buzzer.
It was a good game, primarily because we won, not necessarily because
of the way it was played. Grafton committed way to many penalties for a
team that hopes to win this years North Dakota State High School Hockey
Tournament.
Or so it seems to me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm not sure what to make of the following. I guess time and the
Mayor's Committee on Economic Development will tell. Anyway, according
to the latest edition of the Walsh County Record, (if you don't
subscribe to it, you should) the former Getz Drug building, once filled
with a trainload of pipe dreams and pie-in-the-sky ideas by an
organization called EKATTA's. Has it seems all turned to bull excrement.
Not to worry, however, as Gail Martinson of Data Dynamics, is
interested in the upper level for of the building for her business. Gail
you, might remember, was the primary drive behind Shenanigans (as well
as Monty). And, again according to the Record, she (Gail) would like to
add a restaurant to the main level.
WOW, a restaurant back on main street again. What would Stan Wysocki,
Al Zinke, Dave Klava, Bert Sando, Jack Givens or Lester Mielke and
Tommie Greenwood say to that, I wonder?
---------------------------
Often I have mentioned the fact that the Gazette, IS NOT intended to
function as a "newspaper". Rather, it is to exchange ideas, thoughts,
feelings and general information much the same as one would experience
around the dinning room table or lunch counter with a group of friends.
To be able to openly admit that we (certainly me) are normal people
doing everything we can to end or lives with a dash our family and
friends will be proud of. To be willing to admit that sometimes along
the way, we will not always be perfect and that we might stumble a bit.
(boy that's an understatement for me)

=== HAPPY - BIRTHDAY - BECCA ===
Becca's birthday was Wednesday, 2/13/08. Unfortunately, I didn't
receive the note in time for Wednesdays Gazette.

Over the past several years we have mentioned, and, members of "our"
Gazette family have participated in, numerous "benefits" for individuals
with specific needs. For that privilege I am very happy. It is even more
gratifying to hear from, or about, those individuals as time goes by.
I am pleased to share the following note and positive comments
regarding Becca Mattsons recovery.
Gary,
Just wanted to let you know that it is Becca Mattson's 18th birthday
today. She is the daughter of Steve and Elaine Mattson of West Fargo and
granddaughter of Alan Mattson. We just wanted to pass this along to you
because you helped us out so much last year when we did a benefit for
Becca ~ Thank You. She was in that terrible car accident and today she
is doing wonderful! Walking proud like she should be! She has had a
rough year this past year, but she is strong and determined and she is a
wonderful young woman. We are very proud to know her and proud of what
we accomplished for her. We couldn't have done it without all her loving
family and all the volunteers we had that night. Again, thanks Gary for
helping us out and keep up the good work on your dash.
Sarah Klava (Mapleton) & Karen Brown (West Fargo) <<<<
Thank you for your kind words Sarah & Karen. To be of help, even in a
small way, is truly an honor and a privilege. It strikes right at the
very core of "sharing and caring".

why we do it. Or so it seems to me.

The following "thoughts" were shared by my good friend from Rocky
Point, Lloyd Hanson. >>>>
Subject: The APRON
Wow -- what memories this brings back!!!
Aprons
I don't think our kids know what an apron is.
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress
underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing
hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even
used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy
chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming
oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy
kids.
And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot
wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas
had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen
from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how
much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her
apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will
replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.
Final Memory:
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to
cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. <<< Thanks
a million for caring and sharing Lloyd. It is amazing how many wonderful
memories your story of aprons stirred up.

in the 1949 Tournament of Roses Parade. Al Johnson played baritone, Pat
Rasmussen played alto and Carl Egeland the bass. Duane Kravik, Elaine
Hove and Bud Bozum played cornets. While Jeanette Johnson, Joan Donelly,
Frank Bazal, Carol Watkins, Phillip Wralstad, Arlenn Thorstenson, and
Allen Scidmore completed the list of Clarinettists.
The "extra Guest" list included Mrs. Al Johnson, Mrs. Loren Anderson,
Mrs Frank Bazal, Mrs Oliver Kana, Mrs Carl Egeland, and Mrs. Leslie
Anderson.

It saddens me to report the passing of Robert "Smokey" Rawlins. Smokey
was 71 years old on Friday February 8, when he died from injuries
sustained in a house fire in Grafton.
Although the actual year escapes me, the first time I remember meeting
Smokey was back when we used to go roller skating at St.Thomas and
Cavalier. So our casual association relationship goes back along time.
However, it has been during the past half dozen years that I come know
and understand Smokey best. It is amazing how much one can learn about
someone, over a cup of coffee. Smokey, and our "coffee cronies" have all
but completed a post graduate coarse in that regard. As a matter of
fact, it was at one of those coffee sessions only a few days ago that
Smokey and Duane Littlejohn exchanged their mutual, early school days,
interest in Esther Mae Dietrich. It is a small world isn't it? Esther
Mae is Pat's first cousin.
Born June 8, 1936 in Hamilton, ND the son of the late Charles and Helen
(Zieffler) Rawlins. His family moved to St. Thomas when he was nine and
he finished his education in St. Thomas. He served his country in U S
Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge he was united
in marriage to Ruth Fridolfson in 1966. He was employed by the Walsh
County Record for a time. The couple lived in St. Thomas, Grafton and
Grand Forks. He later drove gravel truck for Bradshaw Gravel retiring in
2001 after 25 years. He also worked part-time for Transystems, Altendorf
and Suda Farms. He was a member of the St. Thomas American Legion Post.
Smokey enjoyed watching sports on T.V., drinking coffee with his
buddies, playing cards, walking and spending time outdoors. His greatest
joy was spending time with his grandkids.
Smokey is survived by his special friend of 29 years, Shelly (Ganyo)
Knutson, his children: Barbara (Mikel) Amich, Prescott, AZ; Deidre
(Steve) Robertson, High Point, NC; Emily Van Der Haegen, Janesville, WI;
Theresa Johnson, Rutland, IA; Wendy (Jeffrey) Morgan, Janesville, WI;

We are entering the third week of Raumin Gone. Surprisingly, so far at

going up since the very beginning of Raumin Gone.

======= HOCKEY SCORE =======
The Grafton - Park River, Spoilers beat the Grand Forks, Red River
Roughriders in hockey Saturday afternoon 3 to 2. Once again, I don't
fully understand how it works, but I'm told we would have had to win be
2 (two) points in order to REALLY win. I guess something about whether
we play the next game in the Purpur of Ralph Arena's. Anyway my fishing
buddy, Ryan Hills, smacked in the winning goal with less than a minute
to go in the game.

Speaking of this years RELAY FOR LIFE. Several of the folks out at
Marvin Windows and Doors are participating in the event again this year.
Along with Marvins employees contributing monetarily, several members of
the Marvins team have put together a cookbook full of scrumptious
recipes.
The proceeds will be going to benefit the effort to eliminate cancer.
Marvin Windows and Doors Relay for Life cookbooks are on sale for $10
each. They will be available Monday through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm at
the front desk.

Workman completed the roof portion of the "longhouse" late Thursday.
------------------------
Tuesday afternoon the open basement on the property east of Ole Aasands
home was empty, partially full of snow and there was no sign of a house
to be found anywhere.
All that changed Wednesday when a house Moving Crew from South Dakota
came to town and started building a road from hiway 81 across what used
to be railroad tracks, to the new site. By Wednesday night, the house
that was built in Watertown, South Dakota was moved to town and almost
on it's new foundation.
The house moving crew pulled up to Granny's at 6:00 Thursday morning
and patiently waited for the restaurant to open for breakfast. (It seems
Granny's clock is set somewhere between Mountain and Central standard
time.) The movers said, they would have the house up and on the
foundation within a couple hours after they had breakfast.
And, I might add,.... they did. The new home will make a super addition
to that end of town.

Rumors of the former Denny's Food Pride Store getting a new occupant
are starting to gain momentum. Some folks are starting to use names,

haven't noticed much, if any, activity around the building lately. So
til that happens, I guess the facilities will continue storing sailboat
fuel.

Someone once said, "if you expect to catch a something, first you have

reason to share the following. >>>
Just a little note regarding the mention of the Teapot Dome -- "Snappy
Smiling Service" -- Roy LaMarre was indeed the proprietor -- BUT -- he
never worked there! I know about that because a fellow I knew quite
well worked there, on cars and on bills and credit books, etc. His
name was Willard "Sonny" Wentz. He had a good business and for the
most part, liked working there for his "adopted" father. Roy and his
wife, "Jo" LaMarre, Sonny's sister, lived in Canada and came back to
Grafton occasionally to check things out.
The reason that I knew so much about them was cuz I was married to
"Sonny" for 45 years, mostly quite enjoyable!
I truly enjoy getting your almost daily reports -- keep up the "good

Subject: Excuse to drink
Some folks spend a life time looking for THE REASON they drink.
NOW you have it. Right here,....... in Shivercity.
I hope you enjoy, WHY WE DRINK...
In one episode of 'Cheers', Cliff is seated at the bar describing the
Buffalo theory to his buddy, Norm. (I don't think I've ever heard the
concept explained any better than this....) "Well, you see, Norm, it's
like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest
buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones
at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for
the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole
group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest member. In
much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the
slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills
brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain
cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the
weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient
machine.
And that, Norm,.... that is why you always feel smarter after a few
beers." <<<<
I have since been told that a six-pack of beer is equivalent to a
standard collage degree. A twelve-pack equals two years post graduate
work, and a case of beer is equal to a doctors degree,..............in
law.
All of which I can't be certain, because I don't drink beer. Maybe
that's why I'm so stupid. Or so it seems to me.

Had to laugh as I read Gary's little bit about winter-like weather....
We have been privy to more than our fair share of winter-like weather
over the last 2 weeks. The county of Rio Arriba, NM has currently been
declared a disaster area! A bit funny from my perspective as I can still
see over the snow banks.. Unlike when I was growing up in ND. The
difference I guess is that we have received 4-5 feet of snow over the
last 2 weeks and had NONE prior to that time.
Our rural communities are feeling the pain in several ways... furnaces
are failing because snow is overtaking the roof vents, our cell service
has failed and not been repaired because the mountainous terrain & snow
combo is too treacherous for the regular snow mobile (this is when you
invest in an Arctic Cat!), school has been cancelled 4 out of the last
10 school days (40% for those math nerds out there), delayed 3 more,
etc..etc..etc... Also could've used Gary's snowblower...even if the
handwarmers didn't work.
Moral of this story.... I feel at HOME! However miss you all terribly.
Just not quite the same to contend with snow storms and blizzards
without you!
Jackie <<< Thanks a million "Ladies", for caring and sharing. (P.S.) I
did use the snowblower, a little bit today, and, the hand warmers worked
wonderfully. However, if I am to be perfectly honest, I must admit that

of our snowcat dust from my sidewalks and driveway.
I have often said how wonderful I think the folks in the Mennonite
community are. Mr. Toews gives me reason again today, to say it once
more.

Something I received awhile back suggested that Ohio doesn't have any
natural lake. Since I couldn't even pass the 1895 8th grade test, it
didn't surprise me that I didn't know if that statement was correct or
not. Today I received the following information from Bill Shininger, one
of "our" Ohio Fox Hunter friends.
Bill wrote. >>> Gary,
In response to the question about whether there are
any natural lakes in Ohio, I did a little work in my library. I found
that according to a 1991 report from the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources
Division of Water there are 110 natural lakes in Ohio five acres or
larger, covering a surface area of 4658 acres. These lakes occur in 21
of Ohio's 88 counties. Most of the lakes are in the area south of
Cleveland.
Most all of these lakes have been altered in some way by
man. Many of the man made lakes were created in the early 1800's to
feed water to the canal systems between Lake Erie and the Ohio River.
Others were a result of the Flood Control Act from the early
1900's.
Keep up the great work, love the daily trivia.

--------------------------
Yesterdays winter-like weather gave many area travelers reason to end
up in hiway ditches. The end result for me at least, was a snowdrift
on our driveway knee high to a full grown snowman.
It's funny, how quickly I have learned to adapt to my environment. As
I stood looking out our living room window the first thing I thought of,
was how lucky I am to have hand warmers on my snowblower. The next
thought was, "I sure hope they work." And,.. then I went right into
wishing I wouldn't have to find out.
Oh well, at least we won't be bothered with Skeeter bites,... for
awhile anyway.
--------------------------
We are already into the second week of Raumin-gone. Jerry left a week
ago Friday and "most" of the folks at Granny's are adapting quite well.
We did leave Jerry's chair open for the first morning he was gone. In
respect, I suspect, for his leaving. Then too, I suppose, to give it
(the chair) a chance to acclimate.
Today will be Don L.'s first full week away from the gang as well.
Although neither one left any definite instructions about shaking while
they are gone. We have been shaking for them anyway. I'm not real sure
way they haven't been as lucky since they left. I'm guessing it's one of
those Murphy's Law things.

I received this yesterday and I'm not exactly sure what it means.
"HURT'S DON'T IT?!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Again yesterday I got a couple Gazettes returned from the invisimax
people marked "Looks like spam. Sorry, not wanted here."
I can't argue with the invisimax folks. Heck even I view the Gazette as
nothing more than a goofy compendium of letters and words with little or
no meaning.
It certainly is not my intention to "pester" anyone. Hence, if those
folks refuse to accept it, then I guess it's best that I don't send it.
Or so it seems to me.
Glenn wrote: >>> Subject: Joe Birkeland
Gary.. Richard Thompson's letter a few weeks ago brought back memories
of Joe Birkeland my old friend and band director. I was in his band in
the early 40's when he was still single and his residence was a room at
the Bailey home. His second home was the band room on the 2nd floor of
the old junior high school across from the Catholic church. Many
evenings we would go up there and visit with Joe when he was puttering
away in the band room.
Richard's letter said that Joe was never late for anything.
In 1946 Bud Rozum and myself returned from 3 years service in the navy
and played with the band again for a short time. We went up to Winnipeg
to participate in a parade. I remember we stayed in an old hockey arena.
We were due to be in the parade early in the afternoon. Bub and I found
a Canadian Navy service club called HMS Chippawa close by. We met some
Canadian sailors there and enjoyed good conversation and liquid
refreshments and forgot about the time. When we got back to the arena
the bus was waiting for us and Joe was furious. He followed us into the
area and chewed us out all the time that we were changing clothes. He
did not want to be late because of us.
There are two websites that are totally dedicated to high school hockey
in North Dakota.
((( The rest of the note, I think, is for everyones information.)))
Myself and another person have started a bulky sports equipment
cleaning business a couple of years ago. Since then I have bought him
out and am on this venture alone. I have added a hockey stick repair
business to this also. These two services can be checked out on
www.esporta.ca and www.srshockey.com. I have a banner on
ndhighschoolhockey website and a most interesting news article on mrsa,
hockey gear and the stench can be found at this link
http://exn.ca/news/video/exn2004/01/12/exn20040112-esporta.asx
Some scary stuff when it comes to our kids health. My washing service
takes care of the mold, fungus, and bacteria. Makes the gear smell
great. The article says it all.
As for the stick repair, it saves parents from buying a new $200 stick
and lets them have it repaired for $45-$55.
You can use this all or just parts of it if you want.
reminded us that we couldn't touch anything. Emily would bring cookies
and milk out to the building and Henry would have "lunch" with us. His
building is now on the grounds at Heritage Village - a fine piece of
Grafton's history.
While I was watching Henry put the eyes in an owl one afternoon. I
asked him where he put the "hoot". He lifted the owl up, and, without
saying a word, pointed under the tail, and smiled. Then he said,
"Sometimes, owls are just like people, they just don't give a hoot."
Aren't memories wonderful?
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
Several times a week I receive questions relative to local sports
activities. Although they very in content. The following note, from
North Carolina, pretty much cuts to the chase. >>>>
Gary:
If you could, could you send the word out to publish any websites
devoted to GPR boys' hockey? I've googled my pinkies off and can find
only the ND high school website, which is great, but I'm dying down
here! My boys are smokin' hot, and I can't even read the Record
articles, for pity's sake. I haven't had a taco-in-a-bag for what,
years! God help us all. I can still smell that Centennial center, two
years gone now. Oh, my heart. Anyhow, any news about my Spoiler boys -
and b-ballers, and whoever else is practicing excellence in Grafton,
Lutheran or Catholic or Whatnot, let me know. I am at your mercy.
Peace and joy, and longing for wooden bleachers and frozen orange juice
cups and all that...
Thanks for writing Rev. Yeager lets hope someone can help our cause. I
understand the school has started a new Website at www.grafton.k12.nd.us
I checked it out, and, so far at least, I couldn't find anything about
current sports scores. That "might" be a super spot for our snowbirds to
keep up with sports results going into the local locker rooms. Also, I
could be wrong, but I'm thinking someone might want to check the site
and change the name listed as our local principle.
The Walsh County Record publishes most area results, although I really
haven't checked their website lately.
----------------------
I watched as much of the Clinton / Obama debate Thursday night as I
could. I noticed how careful both were to dance around the issue of
visitors "without papers".
Hilary seems to feel much more comfortable calling illegal immigrants
"undocumented" residents.
I'm not sure if I'm getting soft, or, if my vocabulary is simply
changing with the times. For instance,... already I'm starting to think
of the guys that robbed the bank in Park River the other day
as,.........
"Undocumented Borrowers".
If you know what I mean.
Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.
I mentioned Henry Williams' museum and wildlife display at Heritage
Village. As a young boy I remember well running down the alley between
Manvel and Cooper avenue to watch Henry work his mounting magic. I
remember Henry telling me once that he had worked on just about every
type of "critter" there was,..... About the only thing he hadn't
stuffed,...... yet,...... was a litterbug.
The only difference between eating the Walleye at Heritage Village
so it seems to me.
It saddens me to report the passing of Stephen Rice, age 61 at his lake
home. Stephen practiced law in Grafton and was a former Walsh County
States Attorney. His funeral arrangements are pending.
