SUBJECT: Global Warming.
Maybe I forgot to mention it in a previous Gazette, altho I am pretty
sure I'm "On Record" as agreeing with Al Gore. Just in case I didn't, I
will repeat it again. "I absolutely DO AGREE with Al Gore, we definitely
ARE experiencing global warming". As a matter of fact, in the past
20,000 years or so, we have actually experienced it twice.
If my inbox is any indication, evidently Al Gore and I are not the only
ones with a opinion on global warming. For instance. >>>>>
Subject: Global warming
Gary, I can understand why our planet is warming! When dealing with
moronic
homo sapiens, I get a little heated up too.
I find it unsettling that those who are preaching
conservation feign doing so themselves. I was always taught "lead by
example". I guess it's OK to pressure everyone else into conserving so
you can buy up their carbon credits so you don't have to. We all know Al
should be patted on the back for purchasing and using all those unused
carbon credits that others busted their hump to earn. The things
people do to convince themselves they are part of the solution.
By the way, who establishes how much carbon is a "safe" level, how
many carbon credits are available and how they are distributed? I'll bet
the cows didn't get a vote in that deal. Do we have carbon cops?
(envision the theme song from cops as Big Al, badge on his chest,
breaks down the door on a coal fired electric plant.)
It also wouldn't surprise me if it were a combined effort of PETA
and our politicians that came up with the idea of taxing cow
flatulence. Frankly I'm convinced Washington doesn't want the
competition when it comes to producing bull**** or hot air, your choice.
<<<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing. I would have used different
words but I couldn't have said it better.
Then I received the following "Readers Digest Version" which I
summarize is a polite way of telling me where to go. >>>>>>
Hi Gary:
Regarding Al Gore, in the words of Ronney Reagan, "There you go again!"
HA!
Hope you're doing great! Say hi to Pat! <<<< Thanks a million for caring
and sharing. (Pat says Hi to you.)
The next note came with "research attached". Room doesn't allow it's
entirety but I have attached the most significant portion. The message:
>>>>>
Gary, Thought you might like to read up on global warming. I did
because I thought that your comments about our cold proves that there is
no global warming. That question is discussed towards the end of this
piece. XXXXXX MYTH: Recent cold winters and cool summers don't feel
like global warming to me.
FACT: While different pockets of the country have experienced some cold
winters here and there, the overall trend is warmer winters.
Measurements show that over the last century the Earth's climate has
warmed overall, in all seasons, and in most regions. Climate skeptics
mislead the public when they claim that the winter of 2003 / 2004 was
the coldest ever in the northeastern United States. That winter was only
the 33rd coldest in the region since records began in 1896. Furthermore,
a single year of cold weather in one region of the globe is not an
indication of a trend in the global climate, which refers to a long-term
average over the entire planet. <<<<<<
SO,... there you have it. And, I might add, that all of the previous
information will be verified when President Obama signs the papers
approving 10's of millions of dollars (actually 100's of millions of
dollars) to replace all of our climitological equipment, because it has
been deemed "inadequate and unreliable". Oh well.
--------------------------------
Speaking of frivolous practices and procedures. I found the next note
"interesting" and a bit frightening. >>>>
"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism.
But, under the name of "liberalism," they will adopt every fragment of
the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation,
without knowing how it happened."
He went on to say... "I no longer need to run as a Presidential
Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democrat Party has
adopted our platform."
-- Norman Thomas, the Socialist Party candidate for President, said this
in a 1944 speech... <<<<
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think maybe Larry The Cable Guy sums it up best, when he says.
"Life isn't like a box of chocolates. It's more like a jar of jalapenos.
What you do today, might burn your butt tomorrow."
We are now in the 4th full day of Raumin Gone. Monday, we left his
chair at Granny's "open" in honor of his absence. Tuesday we discussed
the possibility of donating it, (Jerry's chair) to the Smithsonian, like
Archie Bunkers chair was. Then Wednesday, someone sat down on it and
said...... Jerry who?
---------------------------
Those of us that remember Ralph Dangerfield certainly must remember one
of Ralph's favorite sayings. - "I've never met anyone yet that has been
able to spend their way into prosperity." - Ralph, among other things,
used to spend a fare amount of time and energy, in the 50's and 60's,
lending money to folks.
It would be interesting to hear what Ralph would say regarding todays
state of the economy.
-----------------------------
Have you heard the latest? Not only is toilet paper stock, I suspect
that the paper too, is "in the crapper". I'm guessing my library isn't
the only facility "requesting" a reduction in squares per sitting.
------------------------------
Everyone is entitled to believe what they want to believe. Personally,
I believe Al Gore is shouting FIRE in a theater, when he should be
roasting marshmallows alongside a campfire.
Of course global warming is a fact. However,.... I refuse to believe
that the flatulence from the cows on Williamsons Dairy Farm contributed
appreciably to the global warming issue.
--------------------------------
If we could pass out kudos to folks in a Grafton business that not only
keeps their store extra neat and clean, they also keep the sidewalks in
front of their store extra clean and inviting. The Kudos would and
should go out to The CountryPolitan Store on mainstreet. As a matter of
fact. They not only keep the sidewalks in front of their store clean,
they clean the sidewalks of the businesses on each side of them as well.
Thank you very much,........ from those of us that really care.
-----------------------------
It is a fact that the Gazette is written, literally from the floor of
the prehistoric Lake Aggissz. You'll remember that's the lake formed
after the "last" glacier (10,000 years ago) melted because the globe
started warming up. Marjie wrote the following note regarding that
reference.
She wrote >>> Good morning Gary. Thanks for the history/geography
lesson this morning. I thought I was beginning a James Mitchener book.
If he was still alive I'm sure North Dakota would have been an
interesting setting for one of his novels. I had read a little about
Lake Agassiz before my bike trip there a few years ago. I find that kind
of information fascinating.
Stay warm. It's heading up to 82 here today. With such extreme
differences in temperatures I find that too fascinating when our
temperatures are the same, which happens a few times a year.
Marjie <<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Marjie. Please
forgive me if I seem to be as repetitive as Al Gore. Al IS RIGHT, the
globe is warming. Even I believe the globe is warming. (Remember where I
write the Gazette). I simply believe that Al Gore's solution to the
issue is absolutely wrong.
If Al Gore is so positive about his position, he should start out by
practicing what he preaches and lead by example. Millionaires,
Billionaires and multi-national corporations should not be able to buy
their way out of the problem by simply purchasing "carbon credits".
Or so it seems to me.
The following message exemplifies that quote perfectly. Kris wrote; >>>
Hi,
Can you add our name to the Shivercity Gazette. Received a copy
from Diann Bratlie about the bone marrow donor question. My husband's
sister donated her bone marrow about 7 or 8 years ago down in
Arizona. At that time they put a needle into her back and drew out
the cells they needed. It went to a 12 year old girl and saved her
life. She's now in college and is doing great. She looks at Robin
as her "2nd" mother as she gave her life the second time.
Robin had signed up at a golf tournament. They contacted her
after the initial blood sample, and then she went in for more testing
and ended up being a perfect match for her "donee". After a year,
they got to know each others names, after having corresponded all that
time with non-identifying information. They eventually got to
meet.
Thanks,
Although I can't be absolutely certain that the following information
suggests that the "latest" round of global warming started long before
Henry Ford's Model T. Obviously, unfortunately, Al Gore believes the
history of Lake Agassiz is not accurate. Or so it seems to me.
~~~~~~
Lake Agassiz
Largest of the ice-marginal lakes that once covered what are now parts
of Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan in Canada, and North Dakota and
Minnesota in the United States. It was present in the Pleistocene Epoch
(a geological period that lasted from 1,600,000 to 10,000 years ago)
during the last two phases of the Wisconsin Glacial Age, when the
Laurentide Ice Sheet blocked the drainage of the northern Great Plains
into what is today Hudson Bay. As a result, the waters of the
Saskatchewan and other rivers backed up, forming the 700-mi- long by
200-mi-wide Lake Agassiz and the smaller lakes of Souris and
Saskatchewan, which drained through various outlets (depending upon
their water level) either into the Mississippi River (via the Minnesota
River) or Lake Superior. With the retreat of the ice sheet, after nearly
1,000 years, a channel to the north (now the Nelson River) drained the
110,000-sq-mi Lake Agassiz into Hudson Bay, leaving lakes Winnipeg,
Winnipegosis, and Manitoba, and Lake of the Woods as remnants. The fine
claylike silt that accumulated on the bottom of Agassiz is responsible
for the fertility of the valleys of the Red and Souris rivers. The lake
was named in 1879 after the Swiss-born naturalist and geologist Louis
Agassiz, who conducted extensive studies on the movement of glaciers.
~~~~~~~
I suspect, if Al had his way, he might prefer the Red River Valley be
renamed after him,.... something like Gores Gorge.
Subject: Bone Marrow Donor Drive
I am pleased to share the following information I received from Cathy
yesterday afternoon. She wrote: >>>
Hi Gary,
I apologize; we meant the previous email to get the word out and seek
possible interest of those who would want to help with the actual
drive. I failed to mention details to follow. Forgive me. Hopefully this
will help answer some questions. Also if anyone has been tested in the
past they should be registered on the national donor list, but if they
are unsure and would like to be tested again…C'MON DOWN!
DKMS is short for Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei (German for Bone
Marrow Donor Center); it is the world's largest marrow donor center with
over 1.7 million registered donors. Each year 140,000 people are
diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers. DKMS has
facilitated over 14,000 transplants!!!
So, down to the, How do I become a marrow or blood stem cell donor?
You must be between the ages of 18 -55 and in general good health.
· Not HIV positive or at risk for AIDS
· Not have severe heart disease
· Not have a history of cancer*
· Not have autoimmune disorders such as lupus,
rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis.
· Not have severe asthma (daily inhalers are
acceptable)
· Not have diabetes requiring insulin
· Not have hepatitis
· Not have epilepsy
· Not have chronic or sever back problems or
surgery
*Cervical, breast and bladder cancer (stage O) and most cured localized
skin cancers are acceptable.
You need to complete a registration form and sign a donor consent
form.
Then a collection of cheek cells, using a cotton-tipped swab, is taken
and sent to a lab to be tested to determine your tissue type.
Your data is then entered into the National Registry (NMDP) in anonymous
form, so doctors can search for a donor for their patients(s). YOUR
INFORMATION IS CONFIDENTIAL
How are blood stem cells collected?
Once you have been identified as a match for a patient, there are two
ways, both outpatient procedures, you can GIVELIFE.
Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC)
(Approximately 70%-80% of collections are performed this way) This
procedure, called apheresis, involves receiving daily medication for
four to five days before the collection to increase blood stem cells in
the bloodstream. The donor's blood is removed from one arm, passed
through a machine that separates out the cells used in transplant and
returned through the other arm.
Marrow (not spinal) Tissue
(Approximately 20%-30% of collections are performed this way) Doctors
collect the cells, with a special needle, from the pelvic bone where a
small amount of marrow (containing stem cells) is extracted. This is a
surgical procedure done under general or local anesthesia so the donor
does not experience pain during the collection process.
If you are ineligible or do not wish to register as a potential
marrow donor you can help in other ways. Spread the word, volunteer your
time, or provide a monetary donation.
~~~~ Bone Marrow Donor Drive ~~~~
March 7, 2009
At St. Johns Church in Grafton.
Between the hours of 10 am & 5 pm.
-- Watch for flyers & spread the word! --
No one is obligated to pay the $65.00 it costs to run each test.
There will be a free will offering to offset the costs for DKMS.
Breakfast in the morning and soup in the afternoon.

Linux was developed to be something called "open" software meaning its

Gary,
Thank you for putting my last email in the Gazette. The response has
been outstanding! As a result of that response, I would like to share
with your readers a very common problem it seems many of them have been
facing. Microsoft has released a ton of new updates to their Windows XP
Home/Pro/Media Center operating systems that have been slowing many
computers down these days. The problem is that the updates require a lot
more memory to be available in the computer than was previously
required. This does not mean it's time to buy a new computer! If your
computer is running 512MB or less of memory (I can instruct your readers
how to find out by emailing me at eric.burley@wiserworks.com) a simple
memory upgrade can solve much of the sluggishness we've all seen lately.
This has become so very common I would like to offer a deal to your
readers. I will offer memory upgrades for $60 from now until the end of
February. This includes the purchase of the memory AND installation.
Interested parties need only contact me at the email address above and
drop their tower off at my soon-to-be new location in the tower building
(the Alltel store). Computers over 5 years old I cannot guarantee, but I
will take a look at them for free to see if an upgrade is feasible. I
hope you don't mind me asking you to put ANOTHER note in the Gazette,
but I think this can really help out a lot of your readers. Thanks

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-----------------------------
Most folks have already packed away their Christmas decorations and
there is hardly a headache left in town from the 2009 New Years
celebration. Most everyone made it through Martin Luther King Jr.'s
holiday with flying colors (no pun intended). Now then, today we find
ourselves with only three days until we begin celebrating Raumin Gone.
It is my understanding the celebration actually begins sometime before
daylight this coming Monday morning.
Monday is also the day that Donnie LaBerge will grab his sweetheart,
toothbrush and a bag of pancake mix and head for the gator country on
the windy peninsula. He is planning two fun filled weeks of sun and
relaxation. Unless of course, he gets into the wrong kind of peanut
butter. In which case he will spend a couple weeks, "in the sun with the
runs",.... if you know what I mean.
------------------------------
Gas in town is in the $1.88 range. That, according to AA, plus the cost
and depreciation of a vehicle, means a simple trip 40 miles and back
costs about $40,... without the cookies and coffee.
------------------------------
In yesterdays Gazette I mentioned a few "indications" that Grafton's
Growing is Showing. The eight U-Haul Vans at Rick's Repair was factual.
It is also a fact that someone really is interested in the former
Penny's building.
Unfortunately, that shiny white Cadillac in front of Barb's Property
Management was not someone new in town looking for a local place of
residence, as indicated by the following note from Carol. She wrote: >>>
Hi Mr. Moe,
I was just forwarded a copy of your latest Shivercity Gazette. I am
sorry that you are troubled because a shiny new white cadillac is parked
outside of my business as I am troubled by the fact that you watch for
the Menard's truck to be parked outside of my business.
The white cadillac belongs to my secretary, Mrs. Sherrie (Marvin)
Altendorf from Minto, ND. Now I may not be positive, but I do
believe that Mr. Altendorf does purchase many vehicles in this
community. If you would care to check my vehicle and the one my
husband drives which is always parked at True Value Hardware, the other
business in town which we own, you will certainly see that they were
both purchased in Grafton. We (Kerry and I) support Grafton. We
have a vested interest in the success of Grafton. We both serve and have
served on several boards in this community. But I regret, that I
cannot tell my employees that they must purchase in Grafton, it is still
a free country.
Please also know that my Company does not own any of the
apartments or homes which we rent out. They all belong to a diverse
group of individual owners, many of whom do not live in North Dakota.
It is my responsibility to follow their instructions when purchasing
large ticket items for their rentals. They instruct me to seek out
quotes and they also instruct me to shop at Menards or Lowes. We do a
large amount of our shopping in Grafton at True Value, Simonson Lumber,
Simonson Gas, Pamida, Alco, Kutz and O'Brien, Kieley Electric, Northland
Plumbing and Home of Economy. But in this troubled economic times we
must shop where we get the most for our owner's money.
Sincerely,
Carole DeMars
Barb's Property Management Co. <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Carole. I did go back and check
yesterdays Gazette and was unable to find any mention of Menards in it
anywhere. And, as far as the suggestion of me being "troubled" is
concerned. I might add that my observations were, and are, absolutely no
different than a great many folks from the area that use our city
streets for transportation.
I also find it somewhat ironic that a landlord, expects to receive
payment from someone living in his facility, using money earned in a
local business that the landlord refuses to patronize.
I have said often, there is absolutely nothing in this town that can't
be bought someplace else for less money, nothing.
That, in my opinion, is exactly the reason our business community, as
every business community should, be working overtime to answer the
question...........
"What does this community have to offer?"

If one would drive by Rick's Repair (the former Heritage Ford
Chrysler building) and count the number of U-Haul moving vans in Rick's
lot. One might get the idea that the Grafton area is enjoying a
significant influx of people. I have recently counted as many as eight
(8) vans in Rick's Repair Shop parking lot.
It's easy to see how that, coupled with the shiny new Cadillac,
parked in front of Barbs Property Management Co. with a out of town
license plate on it, just might draw the conclusion that Grafton's
Growing, really is showing. And,.... we haven't even mentioned the
possibility of a new tenant moving into the former Penny's building.

HASN'T - ANYONE - NOTICED???
Our new president, Barack H. Obama, bears a striking resemblance to Joe

Speaking of Grafton's Growing showing.
I received the following note from Eric in that regard. He wrote: >>>
Hi Gary,
Just wanted to pass a little note along that EBI Computer Services is
now called Wiser Technology Solutions and has officially become part of
the WISER, LLC family. We will also be moving into the same area that
Erick Solvedt is currently remodelling in the ol' KXPO facilities (The
Tower Building) across from Roger's Corner Cut. Just one of the many
things that will be offered under WTS is the result of a new contract
agreement between WISER and LogMeIn software called the Wiser LogMeIn
Remote Support Client. This tiny piece of software, available at the
website http://www.wiserworks.com allows my technicians and I to fix
common computer problems without forcing the customer to take time out
of their day to wait for us AND saves the customer the frustration of
detaching the mess of cables to bring the computer to us for repair.
Remote repairs are much cheaper for a couple reasons. First, the rate is
$20 less per hour than we charge for on-site repair and secondly the
customer doesn't have to pay the extra costs for drive time, etc. The
clock starts the second we begin working on the computer and stops the
second we are done. For a limited time we will be capping off remote
repairs at 3 hours. This means that even if you have a serious virus
infection that takes a very long time to fix you won't pay us more than
3 hours of time. It should be said that not EVERY problem can be fixed
this way but about 85% of the problems plaguing computer users these
days certainly can. I hope your subscribers will give us a try. The
client also gives us the option to offer these services on a broader
scale. I know many of your readers are out of state and we will be very
happy to serve them as well! Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Eric

Monday morning on our way home from the smokehouse, we noticed Emmanual
Cicha driving west down fifth street in front of us. He was driving his
dilapidated old Ford pickup and pulling a trailer. Both were loaded
almost to overflowing with giant bags full of empty aluminum cans. It
isn't unusual to see Emmanual crawling in and out of giant dumpsters
around town collecting empty aluminum cans.
Emmanual has worked very hard all of his life, certainly as hard as he
is able to work. As I followed him west down fifth street, I wondered
how many cans he must have collected over the years. I suspect 100's of
thousands for sure, maybe even millions. I have, on a couple of
occasions personally thanked Emmanual Cicha for his significant
contribution to the environment and our community.
Somehow it simply doesn't seem like that is quite enough. So,... I
thought I would thank Emmanual Cicha, right here in the Gazette, with
the hope that somehow, somewhere, others might see Emmanual and thank
him too.

Speaking of Central School, Fritz Johnson, James Maxwell, Harold Bliss,
Cora Lykken, Larry Panek, Charles Stewart, Agnes Qually, Joe Birkeland,

the remodelled rooms will revive some good memories. The rooms where I
had study hall and English/Literature are now the Library. The wall
between the rooms was removed along with the "stage" in the old English
room. The room that was the Library is now a computer lab. A big change
has been made in the Chemistry Lab. Those of us who took Chemistry in
the 60's (and some before that) will remember the Chemistry lecture room
with the tiered seating. The seating is gone, the wall between the
lecture room and the lab has been removed and both are now a state of
the art Science Lab. Anyone wishing to visit the school should stop at
the office for a pass. The District is grateful to alumni who have been
supportive in the past and we would be happy to accept memorials or
donations to the Alumni Association and will see they go to the
treasurer. Many of the improvements in our schools are a result of these
generous gifts. Thanks Gary - if you and Pat would like to stop by, I'd
be happy to show our building off!

Dennis Sevigny shared the following thoughts regarding the question,
"What does this community have to offer?".
Dennis wrote. >>>>
Gary,
I was surprised to see that Denise had sent you information of the
Grafton's Needs Assessment, that was completed so many years ago. Let
me add some information.
When that survey was done it was an attempt to be all inclusive of
community needs. The survey was designed to obtain pertinent information
from every household. The survey was compiled from all entities of the
community and it was published in the Record as a full page survey. Many
news articles and advertisements in the newspaper and on the radio were
designed to inform and mobilize the citizenry. A large group of
people were involved and excited about their community and demonstrated
a vested interest in the future of Grafton. Many people actually went
door to door to collect the survey and also carried a copy and had them
completed while they waited (Tim DeSautel sustained a dog bite in the
process). We attempted to allow everyone to express their opinion.
One of the results of the survey (at that time) was a concern about the
medical community of Grafton (more doctors, etc.). That survey prompted
a significant effort to improve the medical care in Grafton. The
wonderful medical community that we enjoy today was an offshoot of that
survey and the processes that followed. There were other concerns
expressed and many of them were addressed over time.
I think that Denise had a wonderful suggestion about revisiting that
process.
In my current position at Northland College, I work with business and
industry in numerous communities in Northwest Minnesota. I work with
Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development groups in Northwest
Minnesota and Northeast North Dakota (Grafton is one community I have
not worked with) . Many communities have somewhat the same phenomenon
occurring. Vacant buildings are present in the downtown district in all
communities.
I must applaud the efforts of Keith Bjorneby (member of the Economic
Development committee for the City of Grafton) to take the time to visit
with downtown business owners to obtain input. The city needs direction
to orchestrate a positive outcome.
It is time to plan for the future of Grafton. We need to assess our
present condition, explore our options and formulate a plan. We cannot
simply allow the problem to exist without a pro-active approach. Selling
the building at auction to someone that will not significantly improve
the property may only exacerbate the current situation.
It is a very complex problem and we need to do more than look at the
state of the buildings and point fingers and assign blame. After all, it
is our community, we have the responsibility to plan its future and
improve what we can.
That being said, we do not have the luxury of entering a long involved
process with no apparent conclusion. We need to encompass a plan that
emphasizes the character and viability of downtown and serves the
functional needs of the community. We need to overcome some obstacles in
this process. Everyone involved in the process and anyone wanting to be
involved bears some responsibility to act. We have numerous groups and
organizations that are present in our community that should become
involved in the process.
A diversity of ownership does exist and that diversity, in this case,
leads to deterioration of sites and buildings and prevents needed
improvement to the downtown district. The City of Grafton is one of
those diverse owners. The city does not want to own those properties and
appears to be unwilling or unable to expend the necessary funds to
improve the property. In their defense, they need more community input
and involvement to truly do what is best for the community.
Enough said. Let's keep it positive. Let's formulate a plan. Grafton is
a great community and we may be able to make it better.

Hello Gary,
I would like to share some news about the passing of a former Grafton
resident with the "Gazette" readers.
Many people who lived in the Grafton area during the early
1980s and had anything to do with sports or the American Legion will
remember Ted Albasini who was the sports writer for The Grafton Record
for several years. For many years after Ted left Grafton, I only kept in
contact with him through our annual Christmas cards. Then with the
invention of the great internet and Yahoo Messenger, I and my children
had the opportunity to share many chat conversations with Ted. He often
asked about the Stark family and others he had met through coverage of
local sporting events.
We had not heard from Ted in awhile, but I sent the annual
Christmas card in December anyway. Not long after, I received an email
from his daughter informing me of Ted's death in September. Responding
to his Christmas cards was the only means she had to inform many of his
friends of his passing.
Would you kindly share his obituary, which I also submitted to The
Grafton Record, with the Gazette readers. I know you have a large
readership, and I am sure many will remember Ted. Thank you Gary for the
service you provide, not only to Grafton, but the "Great Beyond."
~ Sue Matcha
Theodore "Ted" Albasini, 73, El Cajon, Calif., and formerly of Grafton,
died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, in San Diego, Calif., following a short
battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Sept. 15, 2008, in San
Diego.
Ted Albasini was born Jan. 6, 1937, in Hurley, Wis., the son of
Theodore and Leila Albasini. He was raised there and graduated from
Hurley High School. He served in the United States Navy for 20 years. In
1957, he married Muriel Green in San Diego. He attended Mesa College and
San Diego State University in San Diego, Calif. He was employed for 10
years in the field of journalism in Bottineau and Friendship, Wis., and
as the sports editor for The Grafton Record. He was a member of the
American Legion and served on the city commission in Friendship.
Following his retirement, he moved to El Cajon, Calif.
He is survived by his son, Ted (Kathy) Albasini, Bowdin, Me.;
daughter, Debbie (Syd) Fontenot, San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren
and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
great-grandchild, Jayden Sawyer; and sisters, Mary and Louise. He was
loved and will be missed by everyone.
~~
P.S. ~ Gary, one thing that was not mentioned in Ted's obituary that
I discovered while searching the internet, was that Ted authored a book
a few years ago. The book's title is "The Progeny" and anyone interested
can search Google under Theodore J. Albasini and they will find
information on it. Thanks Again!! <<<<
Thank you Sue. News and information is a funny thing. It's not news,
until someone makes it. However, it's really not information, until
someone cares to share it. Thanks again, for caring and sharing.

I received the following comments and concerns regarding Yesterdays
mention of the AmericInn. >>>>
Hi Gary,
I'm getting a little tired of all the "bad" remarks targeted at the
AmericInn, especially when we're trying to figure out how to "better"
our community, not dig one of the nicest buildings in the ground! It
also frustrates me that some of the comments come from a friend of a
friend of a family friend someone knows. Most of the comments have been
either blown out of proportion in frustration or the facts haven't been
straight (regular room rates versus suite rates.) Also, take into
account the thousands that have stayed there and enjoyed their stay
versus the few people that didn't. We've all had bad experiences with
various situations but somehow the good ones don't get published. A nice
hotel with a swimming pool was on the top of the list of priorities for
the city when the hotel was built. This business was not built as a
community service project, but to provide a return for the investors.
Nobody has offered to pay the bills when there are very few occupants
that don't come close to covering the costs to keep the place open.
However, the few crabapples seem to have a lot to say when they get
charged a little more when Grafton has events going on that benefit the
city as a whole from restaurants to gas stations to retail. Thanks for
your time. <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing. I should add that I am
withholding the name upon request. It certainly is true that most folks
neglect to mention the positive aspects of a business. On the other
hand, however, most businesses ask "how was everything?" when you stand
at the cash register to pay. The assumption, then, must be that they
really do want to know and if something is wrong, they would make every
effort to correct it. Obviously, when that doesn't happen, very often,
something else does. Enuff said.

Speaking of positive comments. Bill, a member of "our" Ohio Fox
Hunters sent the following. >>>> Gary,
Wanted to let you know we arrived home safe Tuesday evening approx. 5
P.M. EST.That was after some challenges from mother nature and a detour
to a friendly GM Service Center.
With a handshake and a smile, we went our separate ways to return to
the comfort and security of our families, homes and daily routines. We
are rich with stories, experiences and friendships reinstated. I must
admit that breakfast and our evening at Marketplace on 8th, are some of
the highlights of the trip. I really enjoy the time we spend visiting
with you and some of your friends caring and sharing. The Gazette is
great, but not nearly as personal as sitting across the table and
visiting over a meal.
Thank you to everyone in the Grafton community who helped to make our
stay all it can be. Again the Leonard Motel was a great home away from
home. We are already making plans for next years trip and look forward
to the cold temps, snow and hospitality, all of which we had plenty
this year.
Regards,
William Shininger <<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing
Bill. We too, are looking forward to your return next winter. Maybe we
can put together a power point presentation of your adventures across
the country, invite a few more folks, and make a "truly special" evening
of it.

I mentioned Yellowstone the other day and received the following note
from Scott. He wrote. >>> Gary,
I've heard that Yellowstone has "ole Al" perplexed. He desperately
want's to plug all the geysers to prevent them from expelling so much
gas in the air (thought it is minimal compared to the gas he expels)
thus slowing global warming, but is afraid the whole region will blow. I
suspect he will plug the geysers, as what is losing 1/3 of the United
States vs. saving the world. <<< Thanks a million for caring and
sharing Scott. I'm guessing one thing is absolutely certain, we have
only just begun realizing what the term being "Pro-Active" really means.

I am saddened to report the passing of a friend and one of Grafton's
finest citizens, Paul C. Benjaminson. I have known Paul for more than
fifty years. I doubt that our world has ever harbored anyone more honest
and sincere than Paul. He always seemed to have time, or, he would make
time, to help anyone out whenever he could. I've seem Paul whisper when
others would shout, yet he would come up with the answers, when others
had doubt.
I will miss seeing Paul, but I will never forget him. Nor do I believe
will anyone else that ever knew him. ~~~~~~~~~~
Paul Benjaminson, age 82 of Grafton, ND passed away on Thursday,
January 15, 2009 at the Unity Medical Center of Grafton. Paul C.
Benjaminson was born September 8, 1926 in Gardar, ND the son of the late
Gudmundur and Gudrun (Halldorson) Bemjaminson. He graduated from
Edinburg H S in 1944. In December of 1944 he enlisted in the United
States Army, serving until August of 1947. Following his discharge he
returned to Edinburg where he was united in marriage to Aldys Nygard on
September 21, 1947. The couple lived in Edinburg for two years when they
moved to Grafton. He worked for Glenn Mohagen for a short time then went
to work at Nygard's Auto as an automobile mechanic. In 1967 Paul and
Harris Nygard purchased the business and they owned and operated the
business until 1983 when they closed the business. He then worked as a
power plant operator at the Grafton Developmental Center until retiring.
Aldys passed away on Feb. 13, 1991.
Paul was a member of the Grafton Lutheran Church, the American Legion
Post #41, V.F.W. Post #9367, the Eagle's Club, the Icelandic Community
Association, the Northeast ND Pioneer Machinery Association, the Rollag
Steam Threshers Association and the Walsh County Historical Society.
Paul is survived by his daughters: Dawn (Wally) Johnson, Grafton; Jane
(Clayton) Mohagen, Grafton; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren
and brother George (Hedda) Benjaminson, Bothell, WA. He was preceded in
death by his parents, wife and sisters: Marjorie Mohagen and Bernice
Ivers.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 19, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the
Grafton Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 P.M. with a
prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton.
Friends may also call at the church on Monday for one hour prior to the
service. Interment will be at the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery. Military
rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion Post #41.
The Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton is in charge of the arrangements.

I love the idea of the Gazebo and City Square! It would be an awesome

million for caring and sharing Pam. Personally I doubt anyone today
could look at the space once occupied by the Gambles building and say
that that property hasn't improved our downtown, and or community, as a
parking lot, rather than sailboat fuel storage.
-------------------------------
When I was posed with the question, "What does this community have to
offer?" I'll admit, it certainly did get me thinking. Evidently that
question gave others reason to share a reason for concern as well.
The following note relates to an issue that simply just shouldn't
happen, here or in any community. >>>>
Gary -
A friend of mine chose to stay at the AmericInn here in Grafton. When
she checked in, nothing was stated to her about the pool's heater being
broken. She had her child with her and had hoped to use the facilities
for a nice relaxing weekend getaway.
Once she found out of the broken heater in the pool (and the fact that
the pool was ice cold), she felt misled. She phoned the AmericInn today
to speak to a manager. She got the assistant manager. When expressing
her concern about the hotel, the amount she paid with the pool not being
accessible, the assistant manager told her that it was "not their
responsibility to tell them of the pool's status" and "that if she
didn't like the fact that the pool heater was not working, she should
have checked out and gone somewhere else".
This was the ASSISTANT MANAGER speaking.
What happened to customer service? I am embarrassed of the way the
hotel treated my friend and her family. I will never recommend the
AmericInn to anyone ever again. I forwarded my friend the number
to the cooperate headquarters of AmericInn.
Hopefully there she will get some customer service worth something.
AmericInn of Grafton and their management should be ashamed of the
way they treated someone who paid nearly 95.00 dollars for a
smoke infested
bed and no extras.
Sincerely -
A disappointed recommender of AmericInn. (NEVER
again.) Thanks a million for caring and sharing. Solving issues such as
this would be one super way of addressing the "what does this community
have to offer" question. Or so it seems to me.

The following note from Idaho comes complete with a question I
certainly can't answer. Maybe someone else can.
Lyle Anderson wrote; >>>
Gary, it's interesting to see your minus degree weather. My
brother works for Marvin Windows in Roseau, and I think they are
getting your same weather. We don't get it too often here where we
live in Idaho, but I have seen a minus 30 here, working outside
framing a house in the mid 80's, but not since.
I remember as a kid laying at night in our house in Warren, Mn., we
could almost tell the outside temperature by the noise of the popping
in the exterior walls of our house. It sounded like someone was
shooting a 22 rifle in our walls. My theory is that it was the
moisture collecting on the nails through the siding and actually
causing them to move in the framing. I'm not sure if that was the
reason or not. If any of your readers know the reason, I'd like
to know. I've told the story for 60 years like I described above
,and I probably wouldn't change it now, but maybe for my own
satisfaction. I remember seeing a minus 50 on the thermometer several
times. It's probably a good thing we didn't know anything about
wind-chill then, I probably wouldn't have been out rabbit hunting at 20
below. Where is Mr. Gore when you need him??? Keep warm, lyle <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Lyle. I can't answer the noisy
house question. However, rumor has it Al Gore is out in Yellowstone
checking out the tremors around Old Faithful. It sounds like he's
suggesting we should shut down all of our National Parks,... before they
all blowup.

the land of the snowbirds. >>>> Gary,

When you asked the question "what does our community have to

library you often refer to). It was a community assessment compiled
while my husband was the chamber exec. and included information about
the community, schools, hospital, activities, etc. It was in a blue
three-ring binder with the Grafton Centennial logo on the front. We
still have several copies if anyone in city government or the chamber

Anyway, the last time I mentioned our two most prominent sailboat fuel

thought. >>>>>
Subject: Getz Drug
Hi Gary. Wishing I was a millionaire and could afford to tear down both
the Getz Drug and old bank building to open the area for a GREAT gazebo
and memorial park "The Joe Birkeland City Square". So apropos,
considering a lot of people spent a lot of evenings enjoying Joe's
wonderful [and very special] talent near that very location. If anyone
has ever been to Woodstock, Ill. Just outside of Chicago, they'll see a
wonderful "City Square", with the farmers displaying fresh fruits,
veggies, flowers and fresh pies and pastries every Sat. a.m. Wouldn't it
be great to have our own "Farmer's Market"?? I'm still a dreamer. Thanks
for all you do. No Name Hugs to you and Pat.

City Square Idea is a fantastic one. It would be a wonderful addition,

Just the other day, a local area resident asked me a question that
gives cause for concern. It was, most certainly, a very valid question
and one that I would have hoped "no-one" living in our area would have
to ask.
In light of "the question", I believe It would behoove our community
leadership, the City Council, our Chamber of Commerce and every business
manager as well as each and every citizen of our community to strive to
find the answer/s to it. --- "What does this community have to offer?"

This morning, as "our" Ohio Fox Hunting friends walked into Granny's
for the very last time, this year. I couldn't help thinking how lucky
"our" little community is to have such a fantastic group of true
sportsman choose Grafton as their winter hunting destination. How
fortunate that the Leonard Motel serves as their favorite Hunting Lodge
and that they have designated Grafton's Granny's Restaurant as their
"Breakfast Nook" of choice. We (our little community) should also be
pleased that "our" Ohio Fox Hunting Friends truly enjoy and appreciate
the Fantastic Food, Facilities and Service that the MarketPlace on 8th
here in Grafton provides them and everyone throughout the area.
I must admit that I am also very much impressed and appreciative of
their hunting attitude in general. They always leave me with the feeling
that they definitely are just as interested in the camaraderie and
process of the hunt, as they are the hunted.
To coin a phrase I have often used, with just a slight variation. They
might say, "hunting is always fantastic, sometimes we even find what
we're hunting."
Our friends left us today but they're not taking everything back to
Ohio with them. They left behind numerous memories of the conversations
our breakfast group enjoyed during the past 11 mornings at Granny's.
They left behind many wonderful memories of a evening full of caring and
sharing at the MarketPlace on 8th. They also left our little community,
and, all those that know then,.... very anxiously awaiting their return
next winter.
And,.... as if all of that wasn't enough. "Our" Ohio Fox Hunting
Friends left us with a significant monetary contribution. Because, they
say, "we want to give a little something back to the community".
That my friends,....... is why I call the wonderful group of fantastic
guys from Ohio,.. "Our Ohio Fox Hunting Friends".

Empty buildings isn't only a small town malady. In fact the larger the
city, the more sailboat storage facilities they harbor (pardon the pun).
It is true that the former Penny's building will need a pile of
dollars and a new owner to get back into business. The Getz Drug
building is presently being heated, I suspect hoping for a hot prospect
and then there's the former Walsh County Bank building. I'm guessing
there never was enough money in the vault of the former bank to
resurrect the building sufficient to sustain a viable business.
On the other hand, there is one former, single tenant, building
downtown that is adding to the list of active business establishments.
Some still refer to the building as the former Northwestern Bell
Telephone building. I have taken the liberty of "naming" it, The Tower
Building.
Anyway, the building has evolved from a telephone building to the
offices of KXPO Radio. Presently the Tower Building houses all, or, part
of no less than five individual businesses establishments plus an
apartment.
The latest business venture to join the downtown Tower Building group
is Jon Jelinek's Chiropractic Clinic.
Welcome to Grafton Jon, we wish you and your new business venture the
very best.

Workers could be seen removing and loading the robots, designed to fill
prescription drugs, into a truck earlier this week. The automated drug
packing equipment was installed in the former Getz Drug building more
than a year ago. Unfortunately the equipment has never been used.
I can only hope that a real serious evaluation of the former Getz Drug
