Subject: SHIVERCITY GAZETTE

CURRENT WEATHER:
It's 71 degrees in Shivercity and 73 degrees cooler in the Shivercity suburbs.
The wind is out of the W at 2 MPH. Yesterdays H/L temperature 20/14
Last years H/L on this date 32/24
Normal H/L for this date is 16/-2
Today is two minutes longer than yesterday.
Todays Skeeter meter reading is ZERO ==================================
"Profanity makes ignorance audible" ==================================
Todays edition is a tad long. I felt the "FAIR TRADE" message on the bottom
of the Gazette should go out today.
----------------------------
LEISTIKOW PARK:
Adverse weather conditions the past few days has taken it's toll on the park
decorations. Last night I counted 26 displays without a direct link to the
Grafton Municipal Power Department.
I'm not sure how many "power plays" the hockey team has scored so far this
year. However, it could be such a thing, as every time one is scored. They shut
off a display so they can afford to give free power to the lucky "power play"
goal winners. At any rate, it's still a very pretty drive through the park.
I noticed the small WDAY/Z display is also dark. I'm guessing their using all
their resources to broadcast the Fighting Sioux hockey games.
==================================
SPORTS:
Speaking of sports. Did anyone watch the Vikings game Sunday? Did they really
lose?.....again? I don't know much about football. However, this morning (I
think) one of the guys that does. Mentioned something about the Vikings losing
because Kleinsasser has a tight end. I had to agree. A tight end would slow
anyone down. And so it goes.
------------------------
I'm wondering how long the Grand Cities Columbia Mall can afford to give away
ten bucks every time the Sioux score a point. Just Saturday alone eight people
were given a $10 reason for "shopping the mall".
I did notice that several guys scored in Saturdays hockey Sioux Wayne State
hockey game. I also noticed several more "scored" assists.
In case you haven't, I did, no-one,..... absolutely no-one, on the Minnesota
Vikings team "score" an assist. Could that be their problem? Their not getting
enough assists. Then on the other hand, maybe the Scandinavians aren't winning
because the Mall of America isn't giving away ten bucks every time they score.
Maybe,.......just maybe ==================================
I did receive a comment on the trip three local gentlemen took to "Hooters."
I'll copy the note to be sure it isn't misunderstand.
>>>>>Hey Gary : I still have the poinsettia plant, and I would bet it is more
than those other two "dudes" have!!!!!!
The "Guy With The Glasses"<<<<<
I have to admit, signing it, the Guy With The Glasses sure adds mystery to the
note. I met "The guy with the glasses" at Market Place on Eighth Saturday
evening. I had the opportunity to ask him what he thought a fourth person might
have expected. He looked at me, then he looked at Pat. Then he looked at me and
said something like, "I don't know for sure, I just know I still have the
plant."
-----------------------
I have received several notes regarding Gordy Stark. Most thanking me for the
information and some asking if I would print Gordy's obituary. I would be most
pleased to print Gordy's obituary, however, I think it best to leave that to
the "true professionals." If you would like to see information regarding Gordy
or any service held at Tollefsons Funeral Home. You can find it on their web
site. www,tollefsonfuneralhome.com. Michelle & Michael Such has done a
wonderful job putting together the web site.

WELCOME TO NORTH DAKOTA
The only thing mad in our state is a few (remaining) Vikings fans. This is,
the land of contented cows. If someone really does want to know "Where's the
beef". Just ask a native North Dakotan. We've also been left with an over
abundance of Bull Dung. But then that's a story for another day.
==================================
Thanks everyone, for the terrific response to last weeks story on Mom's
bracelets. Thanks again Rosie!
------------------------
Graftons local channel 3 now has music! I'm sure glad someone come up with
that idea. It's a "Graftons Oldies" station and I'm one of them. I must admit,
I now spend more time "watching & listening" to the local channel.

L O C A L N E W :
The latest snowfall has been removed from all downtown streets. I'm always
impressed with the efficiency of our small community work force. Snowplows had
bladed virtually every residential street within a few hours,..... of driveways
being shovelled. I remember O.C. Hoy, as Graftons Street Superintendent, once
telling his crew. "Don't worry about plowing up that ridge in front of
everyones driveway. It's a hell of lot easier for them to shovel their driveway
than it is for us to shovel the streets." Needless to say, O.C. wasn't a
favorite Street Superintendent.
This morning I watched as Dewayne Knudson came by our house with a motor
grader and wing. Dewayne handled that large piece of equipment like a surgeon
uses a scalpel. He rounded the corner by our house without slowing down a bit.
As he passed our driveway, he was moving fast enough so that the ridge
"feathered out" rather than ridged up. It wasn't just the best he could do. It
was the best that anyone could do. Thanks Dewayne. Our city maintenance
department was up and running this morning, when some folks were going to bed.
They have always done that. They've always done a super job. Unfortunately,
sometimes, it's too easy to overlook the effort they put into making our
community better and look presentable. Thanks GMU, from someone who really
cares about the job you do. And most specifically appreciates the work each and
every one of you do, for our community. I'm pretty sure Melvin Durand also
participates in the snow hauling process. That too, must put additional strain
on city management. Right Melvin. ==================================
Thank you Rosemary Fisher for sharing the following quote with me. I think
it's especially appropriate since the birth of "our" new twins".
>>>>"Grandchildren are God's gift to parents for not killing their children"
<<<< I will think of,... and use it often. ==================================
I'm in the midst of a research project of sorts. When completed I'll report
the results. The project is a fairly simple one, in a nutshell. I'm checking
to see how long it will take. To fill the cab of a white Ford truck facing east
with snow. The drivers side window of the truck has been vandalised, adding
value to the research project. Once the cab fills up with snow. I will test the
ignition system for shorts. (the electrical kind)

CHRISTMAS SALES:
In case anyone is wondering. I understand JC PENNEY is planning on NOT having
50 percent off one day next week. Just today I received a special "Just for me"
$10 savings certificate. It is a special holiday gift for me. Because I'm a
special "valued" customer, they want to THANK ME, by giving me a $10 savings
certificate. And, they say, I have 10 days to spend it. There is a few items
the "savings certificate" does not apply too. Over 30, to be exact. AND, if I
should receive the "mailer" late. All I have to do is bring it to the JCPenney
store and they will honor all advertised sales. Now thats a statement, if I
ever heard one.
If I remember right. I bought a couple shirts from Norv Elbert when he managed
JCPenneys back when diapers were made of cloth and shirts were made of cotton.

Thanks again Rosie. Aren't memories wonderful?

SPORTS
(Vikings)
The headlines in todays Grand Forks Herald sports section. Indicates the
Vikes need more Moss. I'm thinking, if the "Vikes" could move a little faster,
the Moss wouldn't have time to grow. I'm also wondering. If the Early
Americans are having trouble with the fighting Sioux moniker. In light of the
Sioux "win / loss" record. What must the Scandinavians be thinking about the
Vikings? (Those capable of
thinking)
==================================
Did the Lord go on a Christmas shopping spree?
According to an Associated Press story. A Winona, Minn area Catholic School
is missing a "large sum of money". The money, is missing, that was the findings
of an audit. Church officials are saying "It may have been stolen". The article
doesn't mention if anyone bothered to ask God if he has it.
==================================
Whats in a word.
The last word in my "little" Webster Dictionary is ZYMURGY. It's an
interesting word. Meaning the chemistry of fermentation, as applied in
brewing.
I expect both Johns on my list, already knew that. (being in the
business) I expect even Larry may be acquainted with the term having mastered
the art of consumption. ==================================

INTERESTING ARROW SIGN; I might need an explanation for. The sign says.

==================================
Would the person that replaced the small gas tank on my snowblower, with a
large one. Please return it. Sometime between last year and this year. The gas
tank on my snowblower got larger. Last year, I could fill it up and blow snow
all over the neighborhood. Until the snowblower ran out of gas. This year, I
run out of gas, and, the snowblower is still half full. Darned if I know why.
--------------------------
Our street department has already hauled all of last nights snowfall off our
main streets. I bet you folks in Phoenix can't say that. Several Shivercity
folks have already been stuck in snowbanks. You Phoenixonians can't say that
either.
-------------------------
George and Lorraine Campbell came back to town this week. I'm not sure, if
they missed us, the weather, or simply tore too man pages off their calendar.
-------------------------
Rumour has it, Greg Dusek went fishing today. With a last name like Dusek.
You can almost bet, he won't be hauling home any Lutefisk. I'm told he just
keeps the "good eaters".
--------------------------
Someone said Roger Moe has been building tables in preparation for their ever
increasing Moe "home for the holiday migration" of family members. Roger hasn't
said if he plans on a giant Lutefisk feed. I'm pretty sure, however, the lefsa
is going raise havoc with the sugar
bowl.

LEISTIKOW PARK:
I have received several notes, all positive, about Leistikow Park. Two
contained the mention of the parks "canoe display" and they thought the change
in direction was a benefit. I also agree with the change. I also received a
nice note from Wally DeSautel regarding the Parks "Live Nativity". With minimal
editing, Wally wrote; >>>>>Hi Gary
I was in the park on sat nite at about 8:30. I saw a sight I've never seen

Thank you, everyone. I must admit, by the time I finished that short stroll

Wally sent a note that meant much to me. I would like to share it with the
group. Following is Wally's note, with minimal editing. >>>>Hi Gary
I owe you a big one. I did not know that Gordon Stark was in the hospital. I
knew that he was very sick. Because of your reminder, I went right to the
hospital with the annual check that I give to Gordy for the Salvation Army. I
just wanted him to know that he is still a big part of the success of the

You play a big part in our community Gary. My sincere thanks to you and Pat

CABLE TV. ---- channel 3
Some folks have it,...some folks haven't.
I'm one of the haven't folks in town.
If the kind of response and service Mid-Continent TV is affording some of
it's customers. Was offered by a local eating establishment. It would soon not
have customers. If people purchased a vehicle from a local Auto dealership, and
received the kind of service Mid-Continent is providing some of it's patrons.
Those folks would be driving a different type of vehicle.
Somewhere in our community, is an entity responsible for monitoring the
reliability of our cable television provider. I sure hope, with regards to Mid-
Continents last conversion venture that entity give Mid-Continent a failing

SO-DAMN-INSANE HAS BEEN CAPTURED!! According to news, I received early
this morning, from the news. So-Damn-Insane has been captured.
It may be fair to say, his capture might well be one of the worlds greatest
presents this holiday season.
The words, WE GOT HIM will bring more satisfaction around the world than
happened when the words, "One small step for man, one giant step for mankind."
So-Damn-insanes capture, definitely is,....one giant step for mankind.
==================================
LOCAL AND AREA NEWS:
---------------------------
The "Twins" (Grandchildren 11 and 12) will be baptized today. Jadrian and
Tyler are already 30 days old. Jadrian (the oldest by a minute) still appears
to be the biggest. Probably by as much as 4 or 5 ounces. They were scheduled
for an official weigh-in this past Tuesday. Inclement weather postponed that
idea. Until a few days ago. Jadrian was the blue ribbon drinker.
Lately however, Tyler has become the family guzzler. He has always held the
trophy for dispensing gas. (from both ends) If I haven't mention it before.
They sure are cute little stinkers. ==================================
EDITOR URGED FARMERS TO PAY MERCHANTS:
The farmers who asked merchants to wait on them until wheat was worth fifty
cents a bushel should now meet their engagement and not keep the merchants
waiting longer. What may go higher and it may swing back again into the
forties. At any rate merchants must have money at once or they will have to
cease giving credit any further.
Walsh County does not need to experience hard times this year if every man
will pay his debts according to his ability. With an average of 14 to 15
bushels of wheat to the acre we are far better off than most states in the
union.
-----------------------
INTERESTING.
I read the above article from the Record this morning. Interesting,... I
thought, the above article indicates to me a mutual bond between merchant and
farmer. It fortifies my belief that our economy is totally interdependent on
both the urban and rural facets in our land.
It gives some indication, the more things change,...the more they stay the
same. Suggesting that farmers, not, continue waiting in hope of even higher
prices. Seems to be repetitive over the course of time.
The article also points out the need of local merchants to be "paid for their
crop" as well.
Although it might be possible the article was taken from a recent addition of
the Record. In fact however, the article was written September 20, 1893.
And so it goes.
==================================
Speaking of food.
All things considered;
We are the richest nation in the world. If we do not, or can not, supply our
caloric needs. What makes us think, poorer nations will feel sorry for us and
send us the "cheap food" we presently enjoy?
What might we guess, would the French charge us for fries? There is a bright
side to "fair trade". We will eventually find out if all the halla-ballu about
illegal use of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides will have any negative
effect on our nations health. We will also have the peace of mind knowing
children and individuals working for "slave labor" wages. Will be providing us
with nourishment.
Fair trade,... there's no such thing. It's a nice term used by some
politicians to camouflage a corrupt process for their own personal gain. Fair
trade,.....there's no such thing. It's a process developed by politicians out
of ignorance of the process. Fair trade,....is the exchange of a boulder for a
pee-wee. Until fair trade, we (the United
States) were the boulder.

MAJOR LOCAL EVENT:
Century Elementary Holiday Program.
Pat and I attended the 7:00pm presentation of our Grandson Dilans' Holiday
(school) Program. It's hard to believe that only a few short years ago. The
same function would have been called a Christmas program. It's always
wonderful watching the nations future walk on stage. In some ways, it reminds
me of the "grand march" in miniature, on prom night. Even though we know, it's
the children ages 6 through 11 years old, walking up on stage. It's difficult
not to envision a few mothers, imaginations, walking up there at the same
time.
I seems store bought hair styles and homecoming gowns are becoming more and
more popular at grade school programs.
I'm humbled by the patients and fortitude required to "nurture" our young to
adulthood. I'm always impressed by the knowledge gained, by the youngest, of
our school age children. As we entered the auditorium, it was obvious. That
facility was being directed by individuals that truly love working with our
young folks. It was apparent, that our future leaders, were being nurtured and
taught by a special group of people we have come to know as "Teachers".
I watched as one little tyke began showing signs of fright in front of the
audience. A "teacher" (Mrs Lindenberg) graciously approached the little fellow.
She took him by the hand and brought him to the bleachers. Then, she sat right
down on the floor with him. Rebuilding his confidence, without destroying his
self-esteem.
It's entirely possible, that one simple act, may well have changed that little
persons future significantly.
I watched how Mrs Boura, the schools music instructor, acted, interacted and
reacted to the children in her charge. I observed how intently many of the
students watched their director. I was impressed when Mrs. Boura brought back
"the alumni" (6th graders) for one selection.
I did enjoyed the entire presentation. I must admit however, too listen to
that group of youngsters sing "American Tears" was delightful beyond words.
Thank you, to all that made my evening so enjoyable. Gary - GGP

There is not as much difference between Arizona and North Dakota as one would
think. As I understand it (Thanks Mert) It costs 1.46 for a gallon gas to mow

coming from one. Liberacie was always a very good pianist. It wasn't until he
started listening to those that weren't that he became famous,...and wealthy.

I think I've mentioned the Diamonds concert before. I'm wondering now, why I
haven't seen any pictures of it in the Record. I sure hope there will be a
picture or two of the Leistikow Park displays in the next few editions. What a
super community public relations opportunity.
==================================
Have you noticed those gosh awful green trucks running up and down the Red
River Valley roads lately.
They're hauling the Valleys life blood to local factories to be processed. (in
my opinion) If the Valley loses the Sugarbeet industry, all that would remain
is a good place to store rabbit dung. Laugh if you like, but first consider
this. If we do not produce sugar in the United States. How long do you think a
country that "charges" their citizens 40 & more cents a pound for sugar, will
sell it to us for less.

SHOPPING DAYS:
Only two shopping Saturdays days til Christmas. Over the years I have
"created" numerous wish lists for Christmas. I don't remember for certain,
however, I suspect one of my first Christmas wishes was for a clean diaper and
a full bottle of milk. Next may have been a sleigh or toboggan.
I remember in the third grade wanting a peddle airplane like the Lamont kids
had. In the fourth or fifth grade I thought I needed ski's and ski poles. I
think I did take the ski's down the river bank at the park once or twice. The
ski poles became spears that we used to throw at the light post on the
corner.
If memory serves me, my Christmas list in sixth grade was so long. I was told
I'll get what I get and like it. That was the Christmas I received the most
memorable gift I ever received. (at home) It was a medal model MG car. It had
soft, air filled tires, actual spring suspension, and a working steering system
just like the real cars had. Dad took it down to Nygards after we finished
building it and had Al (I can't remember his last name) Paint it bright orange.
Darn it was a pretty little car. Gosh I wish I still had it.
For the next couple of years, all I can remember really, really wanting. Was
for Mom to get better. She didn't, she went to Heaven instead. I'm okay with
that now. I wasn't then. I couldn't understand it at all then. I do a little
now. Since our first Christmas as a married couple in 1960. I have had one
wish on the top of every list. That everyone could spend Christmas, healthy and
together. Over the years we have had one or both of those every year.
This year, we'll have our first Great Granddaughter Kylie, with us for her
first Christmas. She will be big enough to really raise heck with the wrapping
paper. Then also number 11 and 12 grandchildren will be here. Jadrian and
Tyler won't be big enough to unwrap their presents. They will of course be able
to let us know when their bottles are empty, and their diapers are full. Now
then, health, and being together will always stay on the top of my list. I
have, however, had additional items on the list.
During our first years of marriage. Things like snow tires, gasoline (I always
had gas) seat covers, and a television set (black & white) took up most of the
room. Them the list slowly began to include really important things. Like snow
cats and stuff like that. Then, as maturity
(age) started taking hold. I put things of a more serious nature on the list.
Things like Crown Royal, (for medicinal purposes) Candy, (chocolate covered
cherries) and any kind of assorted meat and cheese trays were always wonderful
on the dinning room table. Lately, or soon will be, I'm afraid. The number of
desirable food items on my Christmas list will all depend,....on the supply of
depends. ==================================

several other things, his beautiful black GMC pickup stolen. I recently

L O C A L N E W S: July 13, 1953
Mr. and Mrs Jim Lamont and Mr. and Mrs Truman Mattson had a harrowing
experience at Lake of the Woods during the Fourth when they were stranded on
Pine Island from 10 a. m. to 8 p. m. After two hours of fishing a storm struck
and they were able to make their way to the island, arriving there thoroughly
soaked. Trees were bent over from the 60-mile-an-hour wind and sand crept into
the picnic lunch they had packed for the day. The resort owner that had rented
them the boat sent out a plane to attempt to locate them and flew low to
attempt to give them instructions. About three o'clock in the afternoon three
fellows stranded on the other side of the island wandered over and asked if
they could buy some food, since they had had nothing to eat since morning. In
the group were Gerald Goetz of Hensel, former Grafton athlete, and two friends
from Cavalier. The Graftonites were very willing to share their sand-laden
lunch! Jim and Truman had already taken the motor apart, when they found it
would not start, but it was ruined by the water. The boat had sustained a large
crack from the pounding of the waves. A resort launch battled out and picked
up the ladies first, returning immediately for the men. Goetz and his party
were guests at a different part of the lake and the lake at their end calmed
down about 6 o'clock when they made for camp. A bit apprehensive, the party
started conserving their matches along in the afternoon, with the thought in
mind that they might have to be overnight guest on the island. A final check of
boats, after they came in, revealed that one party, that included and elderly
and a young couple, were still out and they were rescued from Pine Island about
5 a. m. the next morning.

The preceding article was "Stolen" from W. E. (Ed) Balkee's Caught in the web
column of the Walsh County Record.
That year, a subscription to the Walsh County Record was .40 cents a month, or
$4.00 per year. In contrast, the Gazette hasn't raised subscription rates
since it began. Of course thats because, so far, we don't have a Sports Editor
on staff. (Yet) ==================================
Thanks for the note Marie. I remember one time, Pat and I paid $2.75 apiece
for our "Saint and Sinners". The reason I remember was, I had 4 one dollar
bills, a fifty cent piece and two quarters in my pocket when we left home.
Then, I thought the price of "Saint and Sinners" was only going to cost $ 4.70,
plus a nickel for tax. I realised we could eat Steak & lobster, and leave
Gladys a twenty five cent tip. NOT,.... what I thought was 2.35 ended up being
2.75.
Instead of leaving Gladys a twenty five cent tip. I had to borrow seventy five
cents from her. I will never forget how gracefully Gladys handled that night.
She didn't make a scene, as a matter of fact, she was extremely discrete. She
reached in her apron pocket, pulled out three quarters and said. "Here, take
this and just forget where you got it". Yup, (that's Norwegian for, gosh Gladys
was a terrific person.) nope, I couldn't forget. The very next day, I borrowed
75 cents from dad, grabbed a bud vase with three roses in it (one rose for
each
quarter) and headed across the alley to Gladys Watkins house. When she opened
the door, I wanted to say, "here Gladys, this is for a wonderful person and a
great neighbor." I wanted to say, "these roses are for a person that
understands what it feels like to have problems". I wanted to tell Gladys
Watkins, that the night before, I felt so stupid, foolish, and out of place and
for a awhile, I wasn't sure I would ever get over it. I wanted to say, "Then
you saved my honor, you allowed me to leave the Legion club with pride."
Yes, I really did want to say that. Unfortunately, I didn't. I did say thank
you. I did say I would never forget her. I just wished, as I left her doorstep,
I would have said more. I guess now I have. And, I'm pleased to say, I never
have forgotten her. ==================================
It's a question I asked myself last night while watching a Columbia Mall
commercial. Can a person get a gift certificate, at our local Grafton area
Chamber of Commerce, good for all Grafton stores? I got to thinking, wouldn't
it be handy to walk into the Chamber office and buy 1, 2, or 10 gift
certificates for someone. That could be used in any store in town. You decide.
==================================
Well I'll be darned. According to my watch, it's time for Diana
(Harrah) Conigliaro to have "another" birthday.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DIANA
Don't worry, I'm not going to count candles, or decades, or anything like
that. It's not nice to share ladies birth dates.
However, and it's just a guess, it's possible you were already reading see
spot run on grade one. When Julie (Demester) Watkins was getting her first
official spanking.
Qualifying for AARP discounts doesn't have to mean old. It can mean
patriarchal. Besides, when your out at Rocky Point fishing with Nick. Nobody
will ask if your old enough. I don't think.
Happy Birthday Di with all our love. Aunt Patti and Uncle Gary -- GGP

Did I mention? Graftons "BIG" hockey team won another game yesterday. I'm
not sure, Have we lost a game yet?
Did I mention? The squirts, the team Dylin and Joey are on, played two games
yesterday and dumped a barrel of "butt whoopin" on both of them.

Not much going on in Shivercity. The dollar store, not the new one, the old
one. The one where things are going the second time around. Not the second time
around store, in the old Grafton National Bank building. The one in the
Hallmark Greeting Card store. Not the present Hallmark Greeting Card store. The
Hallmark Greeting Card store the Brekkes used to run, in the former Fish's
Variety store. It will be easy to find. It's the only store front on main
street with a ragged, tattered, and torn, awning in front of it.
I'm not sure who the present proprietor is. I'm not even sure who presently
owns the building. I am sure, the bedraggled looking, torn up, awning blowing
in the wind. Is not a welcome invitation to a main street business. If I'm not
mistaken, I think I've read something about that awning somewhere before. I am
also not absolutely certain we have the means, or the personnel to correct the
above main street eyesore. However, and I'm way out on a limb here, I'd be
willing to wager. If the current proprietor, or, the present owner of that
establishment would call 352-0528 the fellow on the other end would take care
of it. If he hasn't got the time, or a sharp knife. Call 1-800-To-Louie.
----------------------
I have given some thought to expanding the Gazette. Actually, someone else
put the thought in my head. It seems I have an offer for a SPORTS EDITOR to
join the Gazette staff. At first, I thought it was a super idea. Then, it was
suggested that I pay the individual, and, provide an expense account. AND, pay
for travel and entertainment.
Does anyone want to guess when this person will "come on board?"
Thanks anyway Lee, Good luck on the Pheasant hunt. (What are pheasants
anyway?) (and, where is Watford City?)
-------------------------
I'm reminded of a time last summer when a boat, from a very large auction,
pulled up along side us in front of Rocky Point. The driver and his passionate
passenger leaned over the side and said. "We just launched this thing over at
Warroad." Is this still the Lake of the Woods?"
I wanted so bad to ask. "Do you remember driving over any land to get here?"
Instead I gave what I thought, at the time, was an intelligent answer. "No," I
said, "this is Arnesen's Rocky Point." "Why," as I continued to expound on my
stupidity. "Do you need gas?" Nope, said the lady with little left to the
imagination. We just wanted to be sure we weren't lost already.
The moral: Often, it's more difficult to see things right in front of us, than
things from far away. ==================================
The "TWINS" not the Minnesota ones.
As I stated yesterday morning. I had to cut the Gazette short so we could take
care of Jadrian and Tyler. (Twins) Gosh it was fun,......and work. I don't
remember taking care of new borns as being so much work. Actually, I don't
remember taking care of new borns, two at a time.
Yesterday in Reader Digest form. 9:00am both of the little tykes are hungry.
I offered to take Jadrian but was told by a resident expert, Tyler is a whole
lot easier to burp. So I took Tyler. Tyler, I soon found out, takes twice as
long (sometimes longer) to drink his 2½ ounce bottle. It's 9:15 and Jadrian has
eaten, burped, pooped, had a diaper change and is walking around the house with
gramma cooing and making google eyes at her.
At 9:25 Tyler finished the first half of his bottle. I sat him up, and sure
enough. He burped before I could pat him on the back one time. As I laid him
back down for the other half of his bottle. The sounds of nature began
emanating from his diaper. After a couple of grins, (caused by natural gas,)
Tyler put a vacuum on his bottle that a calf on a dairy farm could envy. At 9:
40, Ty's bottle was empty,....and his diaper was full.
Yup, (that's Norwegian for I don't do diapers,...yet) It was time to trade
Gramma for Jadrian. As I put Jad in my arms she was sleeping (like a baby).
Then wouldn't you know it. I had to go and wake her up with my darn shaking
hand.
The shake in my right hand (for babies) is a good news bad news type of
problem. It seems to help the little folks go to sleep easier. Unfortunately,
when their asleep, it seems to wake them up. Anyway. Our day was consumed by
three feedings and associated child rearing duties. I should add, I negotiated
a deal with Gramma that allowed me to feed Jadrian the next two feedings.
Jadrian, being the oldest (by a minute) eats the most, and the fastest. She
should, she's the oldest. She doesn't make nearly as much noise in her diaper.
She shouldn't, she's a lady. She is a little bigger than Tyler, and she should
be. She is the oldest.
I have, however, drawn one conclusion already. If she continues to eat the way
she is. I may well have to enroll her in Curves by spring. The "official"
weighing isn't until Tuesday. I'm betting she's going to be a whole 6 pounds by
then. I sure hope so. Did I mention how cute they are?
----------------------
I was just looking at my watch and realized that it's time for Julie
(Demester) Watkins birthday party.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY -- JULIE
Keeping with my long standing tradition, of not divulging a ladies birth date.
I won't say how many candles will pollute the Colorado Rockies. Nor would I
suggest that her cake could heat a small mountain cabin. I can say though.
Julie has used every one of her years, growing up, raising a family, tolerating
Tommy and being an absolutely wonderful individual. A person Pat and I are
extremely proud of.
Happy Birthday Julie, With all our love, Aunt Patti and Uncle Gary. GGP

According to word received yesterday regarding Shivercitys In-continent Cable
Tv Company. I'm lead to believe, If, you were not receiving the smut channel
(Showtime) # 3 when the latest "conversion" took place. You will not be able to
receive Shivercity's local channel. Presently being aired on channel 3.
I suppose, (In-Continent) being as small a company as it is. Hasn't been able
to prepare for the conversion. The way a larger, more professional,
organizasion would. We should all be thankful that The In-Continant folks
worked over time getting us the Grand Cities local channel.
Although, I haven't talked to everyone in Shivercity. The two people I did
talk to, think the cable channel conversion project in a word, "sucks". I hate
that word,.... but vaccum just doesn't go directly to the point. I did receive
a note from the chamber office. The word from there is much more political.
And, probably more direct.
The note follows;
>>>>Hi Gary,
Just to let you know, due to the change in cable channel line ups recently,
Channel 98 has been changed to Channel 3. Some people may have to reprogram
channel 3 back into their televisions, as it was Showtime previously. That
channel was a pay per view, so it more than likely wouldn't come through if you
didn't subscribe. Midcontinent says they are working on letting people know and
reprograming 3 back for everyone, it may take awhile though. If you could pass
the word along for the Chamber, that would be great. BTW, congratulations on
your new grandbabies! What a blessing. Thank you & happy holidays,
Maggie Gerszewski of the Grafton Area Chamber<<<<< Thanks Maggie P.S
I am guessing the BTH, is "by the way". If not please advise. Happy holidays
to you too Maggie, and the entire Grafton Chamber office staff.

Again it appears as though John (Aasand) may have to bring his giant Santa
and Frosty to a proctalogist. From the street it seems they're both suffering
from "busted bladder" syndrome.

Last night we were greeted at the entrance to the park by representatives of
the Walsh County Record. We were each given a bag of North Dakota / Minnesota
Potato Chips. (a nice touch) We were also offered a cup of hot chocolate.
Another super idea, (except for us
diabetics)
I am sorry to say I've, finally heard from someone negative about the box and
sign at the park exit. The sign says, "donations accepted, not expected". To
me, the sign says it all. To those that find fault with it. Please, in the
interest of public unity and high blood pressure. Don't go through, and don't
enjoy, the park.
We have made one stop at the box already. I plan on doing it again, a few more
times, before the season ends. It would be a little easier to use the drop
box, if it was more like the one for the city light bill.

Wife of original SMOKY'S of Ardoch owner dies at 83.
Most readers of the Gazette, remember Smoky's as the bar in Ardoch, ND where
Obed Williamson featured his famous 52 ounce steak. According to the obituary
of Barbara Kennedy Schultz (Florian "Smoky" Schultz) they operated the North
Dakota landmark for 50 years. Selling it in 1985. Barbara was an accomplished
piano player.
I remember one time, standing at the base of the stairs in the "old" Legion
building. (I was too young to go upstairs) Listening to Mrs. Smoky Schultz play
the piano. I remember dad telling someone, George Scharwark I think, that if
they weren't making so darn (I cleaned that up a bit) much money in Ardoch. She
could easily play in the "big time". Florian (Smoky) and their six children
survive. ==================================
Does anyone remember Dallis Bylin's "Saint & Sinners"? I can still see Gladys
Watkins weaving between tables in the basement of the old Legion club. She
could hold a tray with four servings of Saint & Sinners above the crowd without
spilling a drop of butter. I was always amazed how Gladys could work a full
shift, in such crowded conditions, and finish the day without a hair out of
place. She not only had a flawless hairdo, she raised a super bunch of children
as well. =================================
It's getting to be the time of year for all the "ethnic" holiday dishes.

The Grafton chapter (division) of Curves has moved into it's new home in

Gosh, am I ever pleased Mid-continent, or, is it in-continent? changed our
cable TV channels around. I spent 20 minutes this morning waiting for Kelly
Rippa and Regis to come on. Then I realized I was watching the animal channel.
Our "new" local channel disappeared in the shuffle. I understand it will come
back and can be found behind the number three (3).
-------------------------
Now then,... we are blessed with another Grand Forks commercial invasion of
our homes. Channel 6, used to be a Canadian station. Incontinent, in their
infinite wisdom. Has decided we would sooner watch another "Pay-for-commercial"
channel.
After everything is done and said, or read. It may not be as bad as it sounds.
For example, One of the "adds on channel six (6) is for a "Firefighter" for the
city of Grand Forks. NOW GET THIS, Grand Forks will pay $30,986 to $38,732 for
A (that's one) Firefighter.
Well dog bite my unite. My son, and thousands of other "Volunteers", do it for
FREE, and then pay for their own vehicles and gas to get to the fire hall.
People like Eddie & Alvin Mattson, Hugo Kutz, Wally DeSautel, Richard Larson
and many more, far to numerous to mention. All have spent most of their life
fighting fires in our community for free. If the truth be known, they actually
paid to do it. Thanks again Jeff, and all the rest of you volunteer
Firefighters, Ambulance and rescue people. ==================================
I just received word that Wayne Coulthart went over to Crookston today with
his four wheeler to help in the search for Dru Sjodin. Early this morning there
were already over 500 four wheelers assembled for the search. I'm not sure if,
or how many others from Grafton are participating. I do know Wayne is the kind
of person that will represent us well. Thanks Wayne from the Moe family.
---------------------------
The piece about Wayne Coulthart and his four wheeler. Is the second time in
my memory I have touched on miniature four wheel vehicles. The first time was
when my friend, (at least he was before this) Keith Bjorneby received a
citation for driving across a road checking fields on one. It's kind of ironic
isn't it. I'll bet today, Wayne and his group, will be told to cover every
square inch of ground they can. ==================================

out fishing. Only caught 2 crappies, but the walleye fishing was unbelievable.
Catch and release as it is illegal to keep any walleyes caught on URL since
they are just starting to come back after they restocked it, but when that lake
opens it will have some of the best walleye fishing in the area, if not the
nation. We were throwing back 3 lb. plus walleyes. Lots of fun. Have a fine day
today.<<<<<
Thanks for the URL update. I still feel more confidant in a vehicle with a

I understand it's been 70 years since you first spanking. About 60 according
to Bill DeSautel since you "tip toed through the cockleburrs" bare naked. I'm

Look for it on Channel 22 NOT channel 9 as it has been forever. I'm guessing

so they changed it. To keep us in the dark. Only God, and the cable man, knows

As I entered Leistikow Park last night. I noticed Santa and Frosty were still

Wouldn't it be cool, if someone, somehow, could figure out a way to have

------------------------
Yesterday, Sami and me were driving down main street. I noticed several
people shopping and walking across main street. I think having Embroidery Plus
in the former Valley Jewelry building helped the "look" of down town.
Then, I noticed main street itself. After a few snowfalls, a little freezing
rain, and the need to sand and salt intersection so local body shops don't get
overworked. (right Dale?) Main street is covered with a layer of sand, the
folks at Miami would love to have on their beach. I know sweeping streets in
the winter can be a real "bugger" at best. I know because I have done it,
several times. But I'd be willing to bet, with a little thought and a some
effort. Graftons downtown streets could be made significantly more appealing.
If we expect our community to grow. It should "look" like we are expecting

The TWINS (Jadrian and Tyler)
Last night Pat and I went over, for just a minute. They were both wide awake.
I got Jadrian and Pat got Tyler. I won't waste space saying their cute.
However, as I looked into Jadrians beautiful, perfectly round eyes. I thanked
God, for the miracle of birth. I thought about how precious life is, and, the
responsibility of mankind to protect it. I thought about Scott Woinarowicz and
his wife, my cousin, Denise. Gosh I hope what we are doing in Iraq is the right
thing. Golly I hope all of our troops return home soon. Then Jadrian burped,
she made a funny face that, I was told, was caused from gas. (I don't, always,
smile when I have gas) Then she settled back down again and looked around at
the Christmas lights that decorate their home.
Tyler, on the other hand. Seems to continue to take after his father. He
always seems to be looking around, and he's mastered the art of hickuping.
Yesterday afternoon, I'm told. Ty baptized his Aunt Kelly,.... big time. That's
the second time Kelly has been in Ty's "line of fire".
Maybe Tyler is going to be a fire fighter, like his Uncle Jeff, when his
bladder gets big.
------------------------
Thank you Holly, for your wonderful note. I'll be sure and share your offer to
baby sit with Toni and Denise. You too, have a terrific family. Please greet
Craig and the kids for Pat and me. ==================================
Ever wonder where, or how, the nine tenths of a cent got in the price of gas?
Why can't gas be priced to the even cents? Ever wonder why, when gas sells for
$1.50.9 most folks say gas a $1.50 a gallon? When in reality it's darn near
$1.51.
Why is it that all the other numbers in the price of gas changes, but not the .
9? With all of the competition in the retail gas market today. And, as keen as
that market must be at times. Why hasn't some young aggressive businessman set
his price at $1.50.4 or something? Just a thought.

BEHIND THE JETTY
For the most part, the past two weeks weather was great, with a few days even
better than that.
Fishing of course, as always, was absolutely fantastic. Catching though was on
the slow side. With a couple of, really slow, catching sessions to keep us
humble. I ordered an Angus Burger at the Rock Harbor Lodge this past week, and
believe me. It was fantastic. Now,.... I haven't raised Angus beef for twenty
five years. Heck I haven't raised any kind of beef, ever. I have however, owned
a pair of Levi's, and, several pairs of cowboy boots. Come to think about it,
I've even ridden a horse or two. Not to mention a fair ability to "sling the

Angus beef. I can tell you one thing for sure however. "If it's food, and, if
it comes from Arnesen's Rock Harbor Lodge kitchen, It's fabulous and that's
being extremely conservative. ==================================

My Nephew Casey Moe (A. K.'S youngest son) came to the lake this past weekend
with our oldest son Jeff. With Saturdays weather better suited for surf
boarding than fishing. We went for a short spin over the waves with the
Thompson and returned to shore for land based fun and frolic.
Sunday, with waves not quite as high and a little farther apart. We went
straight out in front of the lodge. Humility will keep me from saying within
two minutes of dropping our hooks in the water, who hauled in a Walleye. That
same humility will keep me from saying how big it was. Then, before the boys
had a chance to finish their first pop and candy bar. WHAM! Casey was telling
us, (and the whole world) he had a big fish on. I looked at his rod and sure
enough. It was bent darn near under the boat. Then, like a real true sportsman,
I said, "Casey, you've got a Rock Bass sure as heck". (yes, I did say heck)
Casey, without missing a lick responded, "Yah (that's Norwegian for, you dummy,
can't you tell the difference between a fish and a rock) if it is I'm bringing
it in the boat. Sure enough. With the finesse of Marlin Perkins, and the
patience of a specialist at Mayo Clinic, Casey pulled a Northern up along side
the boat that put an inch and a half of shade on both ends of a yard stick.
I'm not sure if it was the "slightly rough water", or, the excitement of
catching a lunker. One or the other seemed to make Casey want to "chum" over
the other side of the boat, if you catch my drift.
==================================
Speaking of the lake, rough water and ultimately rough rides. This past
Friday night, Curt and Deb Howe stopped by or motorhome on the way to their
"Rocky Point retreat". Curt is in charge of most of the park and recreation
stuff, in Thief River Falls.
Curt mentioned he had received a call from someone from my town
(Grafton) wondering about any problems one might expect from having a rodeo in
an ice arena. Evidently Thief River has already hosted a rodeo event in their
Huck Olson arena. Although Curt used a little more "colorful" language, and
expounded to greater length than room allows hear. He said, in a nutshell.
You'll be lucky if you ever get all the "cow dung" out of the rafters. Bugger,
heck, shucks, darn jeepers, gosh, Curt said, the only people that win at
rodeo's like that, are the folks that sell the hay for the horses.
--------------------------
Speaking of fishing. I learned this morning that my friend (at least he was
before I started writing about him) Greg Dusek took another trip north of the
border (Canada) to Haley's on the English River. He didn't get a chance to tell
us how fishing was, this morning. By the time he finish explaining how they
checked out everything they owned going across the border. (It sounds like they
even checked under the label in his shorts) And, by the time he explained how,
and what, the Early Canadians wanted to let them cross their reservation, 50
dollars Canadian, or 35 dollars American. (I guess they decided to go with the
35 dollars American.) And, by the time he explained the "fine" facilities the
Early Canadians had set up to extract Americans money, it was time to go. It
always amazes me, how fast a full bladder can end an interesting conversation.
------------------------
TIDE SOAP
Am I the only one that wonders why there are so many different color caps on
Tide Soap bottles? Am I the only one that doesn't understand soap prices?
Just this morning, I was told to stop and pick up a bottle laundry soap. "Just
get the regular", I was told.
With Gregs Early Canadian fishing story still banging around in my head. I
stopped at the store. I wondered as I walked in. What's regular? Is it the
bottle with the white cap, red cap, pink or blue, I wondered. What if I get the
wrong one and my clothes shrink even more than they already have this summer.
Buck up I thought, (that's a rodeo term) as I passed the grocery cart station.
I walked right to the laundry soap area without even looking at the Snicker
bars. (I could kill for a Snicker bar) Then, wouldn't you know it. A sale sign
right under the very soap I think I want. 100 ounces for 7.99 (I think it said)
regular 9.99 (I think it said) Then, as I looked over a ways, there was a large
empty space on the shelf with a sign that said 200 ounces 12.9 something (I
think it said). I can't be absolutely certain the caps would have been the same
color because there wasn't any there. I can only wonder if "maybe" It cost a
lot more money getting the stains out of my underwear with the 100 ounce,
regular. Then, much to my chagrin, as I set the (on sale for 7.99 I think) 100
ounce regular (blue cap) bottle down at the register. The nice lady scanned the
jug, smiled and said, "10.62 please". With the small amount of wind I had left
in me, I asked. Isn't this the regular 100 liquid tide the sign says is on
sale? Too which I received a giant smile and a suuurre response as I was handed
my 9.38 cents change from a twenty dollar bill.
I may never understand the soap business, how, or why, it is sold the way it
is. I will, however, try and minimize the need for as much of it in my "fruit
of the Looms" in the future. ==================================
To the city of Grafton, and any other city in North Dakota, AND, the State of
North Dakota. M.C.I Bus Company, has announced another major layoff.
As time slips away, and bladder contents run into the Red River of the North,
passed the M.C.I assembly plant in Pembina. So too will the good money we have
invested in M.C.I. turn foul. ==================================
ROAD RUNNER ERRAND SERVICE:
It's a NO CHARGE errand service.
I don't know anything about it other than it appears as though "Clients" or
former residents of Graftons State Developmental Center have gone into the
errand business.
It is free of cost, so we can be assured it must be State run. It's hours are
from 8:00am to 3:30pm Monday thru Friday, which is another indication it's
state run. Their "business card" also mentions the fact the they are NOT
AVAILABLE WEEKENDS OR HOLIDAYS. I'm not sure what, if any, mile limitations
have been imposed. If someone out there somewhere would like a errand run.
Contact Maplewood 2 at the Grafton State Developmental Center, 701-352-4476.
Maybe I should be having them pick up my laundry soap. And so it goes.
==================================
Does anyone out there know anything about a black four door (suicide rear
doors) 1940 Oldsmobile, with 62,600 actual miles? This thing has a set of horns
under the hood that makes a freight train sound like a putt putt car. Has
anyone out there ever owned one? ==================================

CURRENT WEATHER
It's 61 degrees under a partly cloudy sky. a breeze from the southeast at 6
MPH is just enough to keep the windmill pumping water for Hardies "pure" Angus
Beef.
Our Skeeter Meter registered 6 sorties early last evening.

WILDLIFE RESEARCH:
Has anyone else noticed how Skeeters have learned to attack us just outside
the "swat zone"? Just last night, while visiting Brad and Denise, I noticed the
little critters seemed to zero in on the area just below the knees.
I'm not sure, yet, if there are different varieties of Skeeters for different
variations of people. It is starting to appear that way. For instance, I think
the little bitty buggers. The ones that tend to land and refuel on bald heads,
are small so they don't get tangled up in the odd follicle that clutters their
landing strip. Then there are those that emit super sonic sound waves as they
buzz around the ears. I'm guessing that variety is nothing more than a
diversion so the really big ones can put their drill smack in the middle of our
posterior.
The ones that really "bug" me, however, are those that start drilling below
the "swat zone". They obviously know how far a chubby Norwegian can bend and
plan their attack just beyond that point. And so it goes.
==================================
Uncle Gerald and Aunt Lois Sevigny stopped by Monday afternoon. They have
been here for about a month and were planning on heading back to Washington
Tuesday. As usual Lois looked great, Gerald looked pretty good too, although
even the latest camouflage issued by the United States Army couldn't hide him
in a crowd. I got a chance to see the painting his nephew, my cousin, Lynus
Sevigny painted on the end-gate of their pickup. The painting was that of an
eagle in flight over the American flag. It is a fabulous painting. That, along
with the pin stripping and small American flag Lynus painted along the sides of
the pickup will make their truck a very, very special vehicle.
It also makes me very proud to say, I share the same gene pool with such an
artist. We have always dreamed of having an "original" painting on the back of
our motorhome. Time, circumstances, and finances, always seemed to get in the
way. On the other hand, those same reasons have allowed us to enjoy such things
of others, even more.
If you happen to see a really fancy paint job on a motorcycle, or any type of
vehicle. Look at it closely, you may just find a small "Lynus" signature in one
corner. If so, that would be my cousin, Lynus Sevigny, Woodrow and Adeline's
son. ==================================
HARVEST REPORT:
Grain harvest yield reports are anywhere from 45 bushels to 90 plus bushels.
As a general rule, the first guy up in the morning has the lowest yields, with
the last guy in the bar at night having the highest.
Rumor has it the grain buyers haven't decided yet whether they will discount
for protein, or, if there should be a premium for it. Obviously the criteria,
as always, will be determined by which way growers will get the least amount
for their crop. Rumor also has it, the generic combines are holding their own
with the long green line. For you sports car nuts.....Combines have climate
control, power steering and seats, remote control mirrors and surround sound.

if your just fishing by, and, if your hungry and in the area, try a rack Rock
Harbor ribs. They are absolutely fantastic. And so it goes.

Rocky Point Report:
Fishing, once again was absolutely FANTASTIC. Catching was a little slow.
Our last "stay" at Arnesen's Rocky Point was filled with wonderful people, both
family, and friends. The time was spent visiting, fishing, eating at the Rock
Harbor Lodge, fishing, going to town, acquiring a 24 foot Thompson boat,
fishing, visiting, touring Arnesen's resort on the golf carts, and fishing.
Harvey Dale and Marlene Aasand stopped by for a short visit. Gosh it was great
to see them again. I worked with Harvey Dale at the Drayton Sugar Factory for
several years. Marlene looked as young as ever. H. Dale on the other hand, was
starting to show signs of too many long campaigns. I was pleased to hear H.
Dale tell me I hadn't changed much over the years. (Actually, I think he said
"your fishing hat looks just like I remember it from years ago".)
My son-in-law David, arraigned for a day long launch trip. David, two of my
grandsons, Josh and Nick along with nephew Nick Conigliaro spent a day on a
Rocky Point launch. With Paul Arnesen at the helm, and, Nephew Nicks "secret
weapon" I would be hard pressed to remember a more enjoyable day. Yes, fishing
that day, was absolutely FANTASTIC and yes, catching that particular day was a
'teeny weeny' bit slow. Thank God for that. It was a perfect day for getting to
know each other better. A perfect time to watch some of those I care for very
much, inner act with each other, and I might add, with myself.
It was a day that allowed me to observe first hand, what I have been saying
for many years. Paul Arnesen, (our Captain) Jack and Mary Arnesen's oldest son,
truly is a professional individual. Paul has the intellectual, and physical,
ability to hold the interest of anyone. The respect and interest Paul displayed
toward our group was nothing sort of admirable.
In a day and age where slang, foul language, and general disrespect, for
fellow man runs rampant. Paul Arnesen, and I might add, Pauls younger brother
Mark, have not only mastered the "Kings English" but also the manners of the
"Queen". Thanks again David, for allowing me to participate in such a terrific
day on the lake. Thanks also to Grandsons Nick and Josh and nephew Nick, for
making a most memorable day.
See paul,..... I told you I wouldn't mention some of the topics discussed over
the coarse of the day. Thanks again Paul.
-------------------------
Nick and Dianna Conigliaro have been coming up to Rocky Point for several
years. Until then, Nick was a died in the wool Bass fisherman. (and continues
to be) As a matter of fact, he would even haul his bass boat up here from
Denver.
This past week, I think, will mark the beginning of a new era. Nick and Di are
in the process of purchasing a permanent residence at Rocky Point. It's a
beautiful "Park Model" with slides, a large addition and lawn storage shed.
If the truth be known, I think Nick and Di are only a little bit more excited
than Pat and I, about their purchase.
----------------------------
We also became the new owners of and old boat, during this past visit. We have
been looking for a "little fishing boat" that I could go out and "putt around"
the lake with. We also wanted it to be "grandchildren safe". That means, deep
enough, so little children can't fall overboard. I really wanted one that had
electric start, as I'm still having trouble with my shoulders. I also thought a
depth finder (fish finder) would be great and of course, in case I should
wander around the corner, a GPS would come in handy.
Wouldn't you know it, we looked around, and, dog gone if we didn't find
almost, just about, what we were looking for. It ended up a little longer than
the plan, 24 feet. However it did come with depth finder, GPS, 4 down riggers,
Stereo (for the Grandkids) spot light, Marine and Citizens band radio's, a
berth that sleeps two, complete with built in "potty".
The person we purchased it from assured us a 350 Chevrolet engine doesn't burn
gas in a boat like they do in trucks. He was absolutely right! It burns more,
in a boat! No-matter, we are very pleased with our little vessel.
==================================
I am very sorry to report, nothing new on a wedding date. The day before I
left, Uncle Norman (Russum) and Dad to-be (Lynn Ebert) were planning a trip.
This morning, I found out they are still planning the same trip. Hence, Dad to-
be (Lynn Ebert) hasn't spent a minute planning his up coming union.
It's beginning to look as though I may need help with the wedding plans. I'm
not sure, if there is any truth to the rumor, however this morning I was told
Lynn gave June a ring with a lump of coal on it. He then, according to the
rumor, told June he would be happy to get married when that piece of coal
turned into a diamond. Maybe someone out there can add some credibility to the
rumor. Anyway, I'm starting to think if Lynn keeps frittering away his money on
foolish trips and stuff. We just may end up having to have the wedding in the
park, for lack of funds.
And so it goes.
==================================
Did I mention our local UPS man Pat Svoboda also stopped by to see us this
week at Rocky Point. Pat, another UPS man for the Park River area, Pats future
Brother-in-law and another friend were going on the launch for the day with
Paul. Pat stopped by our place afterwards and commented on what a terrific
time they had that day. If anyone is wondering where their UPS stuff is this
week. Pat's on vacation. If your packages smell a little fishy next week.
You'll know why. ==================================

Of course, I could not read the Park Board article in the Record with

70's when I heard Bill Moe having many discussions with Park staff as to

to the park to keep it beautiful. Having said that, I trust that the
members of the Park Board and the Park Staff know what they need in the
way of products and service and will not forego the service that goes
along with the products when they are purchased from a business that is
truly in the greenhouse/landscape business.
Leistikow Park has always been a special place. I can't go to Grafton
without taking a sentimental journey through the park in the summer or
at least past it in the winter. The Board has provided good stewardship
of this valuable resource. May they continue to do so.

I pondered on the next note for quite some time. For several reasons.
The first, and without question, the most important to me. I read in the
note the same basic concerns I have relative to the issue, and of course
the fact that it relates to our grandson, and, his future in our schools
athletic programs. It is a note that I believe could have been written
by many concerned Mothers in our school system.

Work behind the white sheet covered windows of our new Dollars & Sense
store continues. The north wall, as seen "over the sheets" appears to be
a display of colored bags. (no ethnic affiliation here) We still haven't
had any indication of whether the store will in fact open, or, if the
plan is to spend the rest of the summer stocking shelves.
It's probably a good thing they didn't put an "opening soon" sign in
the window when they started. However at some point one would think an
"opening sometime" sign would create some interest.
----------------------
From the shucks-bugger-heck department.
Rumour has it, a new bakery in the old Valley Jewelry Building no
longer has the proper ingredients and isn't going to seethe. According
to the rumour, or my imagination, whichever is more accurate. Some of
the the new bakeries proposed personnel have decided to go to Bagdad
with the hope of opening a sweet shop in one of Sodamn Insanes "open air
Palaces".
Now then, if that rumour is true, and it might be. Shivercity will be
looking for a person that can fix watches and bake bread in a partly
renovated Jewelry store.
This could well be a reason for an "out of the area" Realtor. I gotta
think THEY get many calls a day for a Jewjellyroll store.
------------------------
That reminds me. How many city lots HAS Crary, from south in the
prairie, sold so far?
------------------------
HOLY SMOKERS, some say it was inevitable. Some say they told me so.
One or two simply said "bull excrement."
Anyway, it does appear local mendicant Louie Goodrie has taken on a new
partner. This guy, can actually look up and see the top of the windows
he's cleaning. Yup, (that's Norwegian for you betcha) Louie's new
partner is sporting a new bucket and squee-gee, with extended handle
no-less.
I caught a first glimpse of Louie's new partner while he was
rearranging bird droppings on the windows of our local Wells Fargo
Stables.
Everyone knows, Louie has been in the window streaking business longer
than the cigarette butt that hangs from his mouth. However, Louie isn't
as young, (I don't think he ever was) any more. So, like businesses
often do. Louie decided to acquire a reputable well known business name.
To that end I think Louie 'did good'.
Eikenberry, yup, (that's Norwegian for the Eikenberry's are darn good
people) Louie went out and fished around in the Eikenberry gene pool
until he hooked one called Bruce. For those that haven't seen Bruce in a
while, or ever. He looks much like his father Dale "Red" Eickenberry. He
even talks like Red, and has red (faded) hair like Red.
Red Eikenberry (for the young folks) purchased the property at 46 West
Sixth Street known as "Tremy's", from Medford Otrembo in the early 50's.
Reds News and Sports was a popular noon hour stop for Central School
kids for the better part of 24 years. Believe it or not, at that time
most kids were more interested in hunting books than 'the other kind'.
John K. may have glanced through the ones with brown paper covers but I
never actually observed it.
So, here we are after many years, an Eikenberry is back in business in
Grafton. Isn't it great? Before I run out of ink, I should clarify this
new business arrangement I conjured up between Louie and Bruce. Did I
forget to mention that Bruce has also acquired an insulation business in
town. If anyone should need their attic, or anything, insulated. Contact
Bruce Eikenberry. His name isn't in the book yet, however just ask Louie
and he'll tell you where to go.

If everything works out, sometime later this morning we plan to take
the Master Cruiser out on a road trip. So far we're not sure what

determine both.

Today is the first day the Westside Drive Inn is "open for breakfast."
So far it doesn't appear to be to busy. Actually so far I haven't seen a
car in the lot.
Somehow pancakes and eggs sound better on a table than the dash of a
car.
For those interested. The West Side Drive Inn (formally the A & W Drive
Inn) is for sale. If any of you snowbirds are interested in summer
employment. Contact Country Realty and make them an offer.
----------------------
Have I mentioned the Country Realty sign in front of Terry and Mary
Henricksens home also has a SOLD sign on it. Once again I ask. Why are
we still fooling around with a Grand Forks Realtor, when our own
realtors are the ones selling property in our community?
Just this morning someone mentioned that, no matter who's sign is on
the property, anyone can sell it. My answer to that is absolutely. But
not before giving the Realtor that listed it there commission.
---------------------
Our Leistikow Park Campground has a couple campers already using the
facilities. Both campers have been there for several days. For a small
campground it's great to see such early season activity, and revenue.
The park itself, is already starting to take on it's usual "well
maintained" appearance. Every time I go through the park I'm reminded of
men like Milton Johnston. Milton was the driving force behind the
"posts" that surround the park roadsides. The large flowerbed on the
east side of the park was also instigated by Milton Johnston. Originally
it was intended to be planted as the American flag although the slope
wasn't quite enough to get the desired effect.
The Blacktop road through the park was mainly through the efforts of
Buster Schumacher, among others. Buster spent many hours with the
business community speaking of the benefits of a hard surface road
through the park.
It's not possible for me to look at the pool, without thinking of Hugo
Kutz. Hugo spent hours and hours keeping the pool "open" when high costs
of normal labor and materials would have forced it's closing. I can
still see Hugo cutting used tractor inner tubes into 2 inch strips and
wrapping them around leaking pipes. Some of those "patches", lasted for
several years.
The stone pillars at the entrance to the campground will always remind
me of Raymond Misialek. Ray built them as well as the ones at the
entrance to Heritage Village. They are a beautiful example, of field
stone masonry.
I must also admit, most trips through our terrific little park, reminds
me of my Father. Of his concern that Leistikow Park would always provide
a beautiful retreat for area residents.
My memory of city park supervision, only goes back to the time of Tommy
Ganyo. Tom was in charge and Earl Stoltz, for the most part did the
work. Later, when Earl took charge, the Park transformed into one of the
best kept, nicest looking small town parks in the country. I will always
remember Earl Stoltz as the person that put our "city park on the map."
Memories, aren't they wonderful?
--------------------------
Just as I turned on the weather channel this morning. A beautiful white
horse, pulling a wonderfully decorated carriage, appeared on the screen.
It reminded me of my Uncle Leonard DeSautel. Leonard always used to
tell me. "If you ever hear me talking about horses, you can shoot me."
He would say, "people that talk about horses, and, the good old days are
getting too darn (I cleaned that up a bit) old." "I" he would say,
"never want to think that old."
ANYWAY, as I looked at that horse I wondered what Uncle Leonard would
say,... about the bag hanging from it's butt. My guess is, whatever it
would have been. Most of it would not be printable.
Uncle Leonard always felt there was nothing good about the old days. He
would say, "todays are the best, and tomorrow they'll even be better."
I sure miss Uncle Leonard. He wasn't the most opinionated individual in
the world..... I don't think. However one thing was always for certain.
When you left his place you always knew where he stood on an issue.
Aren't memories wonderful?

I received an interesting response from Tom Zidon this morning.
Relative to my comments, as well as Wallys, yesterday about litter.
Tom wrote:
re: trash pick up per Wally
Wally asks "Where have pride and responsibility gone?" And "Don't
parents teach their kids any more?"
I suggest that pride and responsibility and teaching kids is still alive
and well as demonstrated by the parents and kids that were out picking
trash on a Sunday!!! God bless them!
Thank you Tom, for caring and sharing. You are absolutely correct. The
world does have many more "good" people than "bad" individuals. Using
current vernacular Tom, people like you and Wally DeSautel fall into the
"leave the world a little better category." For that the whole world
should be thankful.
