Todays Gazette is brought to you by,
===== SMALL TOWN AMERICA =====
~~~~~ USE EM, OR, LOSE EM ~~~~~
The current temperature is - 7 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was -19/-30
Normal H/L temp for this date is 19/0
The high on this date in 2002 was 47. That's 66 degrees warmer than
yesterday.
We won't have to worry about "skeeter bites" for the rest of the week
either.
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-----------------------
Most folks in the area are still struggling to accept the idea, that
Denny's Food Pride will be closing. What's really surprising is how
surprised the folks that do most of their shopping "out of town" are.
Local businesses can't function when folks shop away from home, either
in person, or on line. E-Bay,... and the Wal-Mart's of the world, don't
pay one penny toward the future of our community. The business
community, of our town, must join forces with the governing arm of our
community to establish viable options and direction for it's future.
To that end, we can be thankful the Mayor has already established a
committee to work on those issues. The loss of Denny's Food Pride,
Grafton Appliance and the fact that the local bowling Alley is once
again back on the market, should give the Mayor's committee more than
enough reason to act posthaste.
Notes like the following are fun to share. However, If it were mine,
I'd be happy to use my name. The note. >>>
Please DO NOT use my name..... but I wanted to let you know of a
"jewel" of a business that's located in Grafton!
Golden Harvest Jewelers. We stopped into "browse" this past weekend and
was so impressed with the variety of rings, bracelets, necklaces that
they had- but the PRICES WERE UNBELIEVABLY LOW! The quality of the
jewelry far outweighed the costs. The jeweler himself is a "master
jeweler", which really means he knows his work - he was very helpful.
I'm happy to say that we all walked out of there with a purchase in our
hand and will now be regular customers. The "jewel" of a business was
better than anything in the bigger towns - Golden Harvest prices and
quality beat the "big retailers" in "big cities". With valentines day
approaching--- this should be the number one stop for all the men out
there. <<< WOW, If that note doesn't pop a button on Jeff Narloch's
vest, I don't know what will. For what it's worth, I too agree with the
"authors" assessment of Golden Harvest Jewelers.
----------------------
Yes,.. I agree we are experiencing the rath of global warming, Yes,.. I
find it hard to believe, no-where, in any of the global warming
discussions, can I find the mention of the last two such global warming
events the world has known. And,.. Yes,.. I find it easy to make "jest"
of the supposedly "new revelation" of global warming.
Obviously, however, Doug doesn't find the "jest" in my confusion. He
wrote. >>>
Mr. Moe, So what's with the Gore-bashing article done recently...did
you think it was "cute"?..."without going into the politics"...Have you
seen his movie...have you read his books?...If you want to get into
politics at least have the decency to state your views...and get your
facts straight (the "award" he's up for has also been nomin- ated to
"Jesus Camp" which has a ND connection)...What will we be seeing
next...what a wonderful war in Iraq we're in?...dw <<< Thanks for caring
and sharing Doug. If I were to guess, I'd guess you voted for Al in the
last election. However, I really can't agree with you thoughts on the
war in Iraq. I don't think thats a wonderful war at all. And, I am
surprised you would even entertain such an idea.
Gary,
I read Bert Overlands take on Pagliarini's impact on all of
us; and It reminded me of a few other teachers of that era. Every time I
pay cash for something and the clerk says here's your change; (because
that's what the cash register says and they don't know how to count out
the change); Ican't help but think of what Marion Burtt would say to
that clerk. I'll bet she would stop right then and there, and proceed to
teach her how!Or how about the reply they would get if they asked
Hazel Sutterlin if she would like to go toChicago and learn
"ebonics"to better relate with her students?
Like that song says; "the times they are a changin".
Keep up the good work, .....Keith <<< Thanks a million Keith.
Pag's story generated the following note from Mike. He wrote. >>> Gary,
the people mentioned, Mr. Pagliarinis and Mr. Lorne Miller, can you tell
me did they ever teach in the EGF school district? We had a Pags that
used to teach the fine art in SHOP or Woodworking, and Mr Miller was, I
believe, a principal or assist in EGF. These people would fit the time
frame mentioned and were wonderful people!! Mr. Pagliarinis was a close
friend of my fathers. Also very strict but honest and fair individual
and very well liked in the area. Mike S. <<< Thanks Mike. I can't answer
that question, although I'm sure there are some in our group that
can,... and I hope will.
-----------------------
Speaking of questions, the closing of Denny's Food Pride, and, that
stores origins by the Olson's. Gave Rosanne reason to write. >>>
Dear Gary,
I wondered if you could find out if the Olson's who first owned the Red
Owl store in the early 40's were ever called "Ollie" because my father,
Harald Bliss, in addition to his teaching job held part time jobs on
Saturday at S&L and also at "Ollie's" and we could not figure out what
business that was.
Maybe if you don't know, you could put an alert in your newsletter for
anyone who might know.
We all surely appreciate your newsy newsletter. Makes Grafton come
alive in my memories.
Thanks for all your effort.
Kind regards,
Rosanne Bliss <<< Rats!!! That's two questions in one day that I can't
answer. But I'll bet someone can lend insight to the query. Norman
Russum, Bert Overland or the Paulsons must be able to shed light on the
subject.
Gary,
I am sending a special thank you to Abbey for participating in the Climb
For the Cure, even though I have never met her. What a wonderful thing
for her to do.
My granddaughter has cystic fibrosis and we are waiting for a
cure. The fund raisers held for CF fund the research that will make this
possible. Our whole family participated in the Climb for the Cure for
many years and a few still do. Instead, our family now does the Great
Strides walk-a-thon which is held in our area in early May. These two
fundraisers bring in many dollars which all go for research. Cystic
Fibrosis is one of the so-called orphan diseases because not every
familly is affected like with heart disease and cancer. Funding for
research isn't available until that research reaches stage 3, so the CF
foundation raises money for preliminary stages.
My granddaughter will be 14 years old in March. Thirty years ago the
life expectency for her would have been 5 years old. With people like
Abbey and others, the life expectency has raised to 38 years old and is
growing every year. Mackenzie is able to participate in many sports and
live a "normal" life by taking many of the new medications available to
her through research. Several she is taking were approved since she was
diagnosed.
Thank you!!!!Thank you!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
Sharon DeSautel Larson <<< Thank you Sharon, for caring and sharing. For
those that might not know. Mackenzie is Theresa and Leonard DeSautel's
great-granddaughter.
If anyone would like to make a pledge in support of this event, please
stop by Steve Larson Studio, in Grafton, where they have pledge sheets,
or email them at stevelarsonstudio@yahoo.com
------------------------
Please welcome Al Berry, Mike Einarson, and Kathy Nomeland to the
Gazette family. I hope you can find something of interest in it's
ramblings.
