L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
Rumor has it the Meyer house at 1443 Dogwood Ave. has been sold to
folks that will become brand new residents of Grafton. And that's a good
thing.

It seems the closing of Denny's Food Pride has re-generated the
memories of former local food stores. Jim Upham shared the following.
>>>
Gary,
Your mention of the National Tea grocery store in a recent issue of
the Shivercity Gazettebrought back some memories. If my memory serves
me right, the National Tea was located across the street (north) from
the Post Office. The building they originally occupied became Grafton
Paint and Glass. It was the first "Supermarket" store in Grafton
where people picked up their groceries and brought them to the cash
register. I was the kid (11 or 12 years old) who bagged them. My other
duties included stocking the shelves, candling eggs and occasionally
working behind the meat counter. I think that Mrs. Dufault worked there
at the time. I don't remember who the store manager was but I do know
that he fired me after we had a disagreement.
Jim Upham <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Jim. That same
building also served as Dr. Blanchards Clinic, the Annex of Grafton
Paint and Glass and also a archery range before the owners of the
property "donated" the building and property to the city for taxes.
Aren't memories wonderful? Except of course, the getting fired part.

The Spoilers travelled to Grand Forks Saturday night to face off with
the Red River Rough Riders. The first period ended 0 to 0. Red River
carved the first notch in the second period with Minto's Zach Miller
stuffing in the first goal for the Spoilers and tying the game 1-1.
Almost before I could holler and tell Pat we tied the game Oakwoods Chad
Demers was quicker than Red Rivers goal tender making it 2 to 1. Then,
before the paint dried on the scoreboard RR tied the game 2 to 2.
Rats!!!!
Next Grafton's Ryan Hills earned the Spoilers a third goal making it 3
to 2 and giving the crowd real reason to jump and scream. Park River's
Cody Boyle smacked one in making it 4 to 2 at the end of 2. Somewhere in
the third period the Rough Riders snuck their third goal past Mike Sand
and when the final bell rang the score was 4 to 3.
4 players from 4 different communities, working together "for" the
benefit of the entire team, "spoiled" the Rough Riders chances for a
perfect season, handing them their very first defeat of the year.
Proving once again, It's not where you play the game,.. It's how you
play the game,... that counts."
I'm told the next time the Spoilers pack up for a game. It'll be with
the "Packers" from West Fargo.

==== Benefits of Quitting Smoking ====
Some of you are considering it, some of you have quit and perhaps have
even started again, and some of you may not be ready yet. Whatever stage
you are at there are definite benefits to quitting, not only for you,
but for those you may smoke around. Listed below are just a few to
consider. When smokers quit, within twenty minutes of smoking that last
cigarette the body begins a series of changes. Example At 20 minutes:
Blood pressure decreases Pulse rate drops Body temperature of hands and
feet increases.
At 8 hours:
Carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal Oxygen level in blood
increases to normal.
At 24 hours:
Chance of a heart attack decreases.
At 48 hours:
Nerve endings start re-growing.
Ability to smell and taste is enhanced.
At 2 weeks to 3 months:
Circulation improves, Walking becomes easier, Lung function increases.
At 1 to 9 months:
Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decreases.
At 1 year:
Excess risk of coronary artery diseased is decreased to half that of a
smoker
Long-Term Benefits of Quitting
At 5 years:
From 5 to 15 years after quitting, stroke risk is reduced to that of
people who have never smoked
At 10 years:
Risk of lung cancer drops to one-half that of continuing smokers Risk of
cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas
decreases Risk of ulcer decreases
At 15 years:
Risk of coronary heart disease is now similar to that of people who have
never smoked Risk of death returns to nearly that level of people who
have never smoked

I had this crazy idea that it would be really neat to have a "TAKE A
CHANCE" night at the Strand Theater this year during our 125 year
celebration. Remember the great old movies for 9 and 25 cents admission?
Tom Henriksen thinks it's possible, if he can get someone to help
sponsor it. More later.

Write if you can, call if you can't, and, tell your loved ones they are,
before it's too late.
