February 1, 2007 - Thursday in Grafton, ND

Todays Gazette is brought to you in part, by Small Town America.
====== Use em or lose em. ======
-------------------------
The current temperature is 4 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 8/-7
Normal H/L temp for this date is 18/-2
The "feels like" on bare skin temperature tonight will approach -25
degrees. It could even pass that in open country.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff."
-------------------------
I haven't heard the full story, yet, but it sounds like a few of our
UND fighting Sioux hockey players took some time off from their busy
hockey training schedule to do a little ice fishing. I'm not sure what
they were fishing for, tho' rumor has it they were using straws, hoping
to "hook" a limit of ice cubes, in a local pub.
Then again, you know how rumors are. It probably wasn't even hockey
players at all, and, even if it was. It certainly wouldn't have been any
of those "playing" on a sports scholar-ship...... Could it?
---------------------------
When I sent out yesterdays question of the day I really wasn't sure
what to expect. First because I don't often send out a "question of the
day" and then, I had trouble typing it, let alone reading it.
Anyway, I was certainly surprised when, shortly after sending the
question out, Chris Ferguson answered it, "correctly".
Yesterdays question of the day, was: Can you translate the following
quote? "Du sublime au ridicule il n'y a qu'un pas."
The correct answer is: "From the sublime to the ridiculous there is but
one step".
Now then, either Chris Ferguson payed really close attention in her
French classes, OR, she spends as much time in the "library" as I do.
And, I might add, reading the same literature.
Congratulations Chris, if we would have been offering prizes, you would
have won one. Thanks also for the wonderful story you enclosed with you
answer titled "Just another Mother." It's a little long, I think, to
include in the Gazette. However I would be happy to send it out to
anyone that would like to read it.
I found it very heartwarmng.

Linda (Fisher) Cariveau's note yesterday gave Karol reason to send the
following.
>>> Hi Gary: I share Linda Cariveau's thoughts about memories in
Grafton. I think the German girl she was talking about was Herminia
Kraft. It's fun to read the old news rather than the "new News". Please
let your Gazette readers know that prayers are needed for Becca Mattson
(West Fargo). My cousin Steve Mattson and Elaine (Daley) Mattson had a
near tragedy when Becca got into a car accident with an intoxicated
driver. He died at the scene and according to the accident evidence,
Becca is an amazing survivor.
Becca's Grandparents are Allen and Hilldegard Mattson. Thanks for
keeping us all in touch!
Karol Dupree-Robinson, St. Thomas, ND <<< Thanks a million for caring
and sharing Karol. I was unaware of Becca's misfortune. Due to
circumstances, mostly beyond our control, we have installed The Lord and
all of his helpers on our "Speed Dial". We will be including Becca in
our prayers as will many Gazette family members.

John Tweten sent the following "facts" about Sam's Dynasty. I could
add, that Sam couldn't have built such a dynasty if it wasn't for the
customers that shop there.
Subject: Walmart-Market penetration, I'd say so.
90% of Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.
At Wal-Marts Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day.
A- This works out to $20,928 of profit every minute!!!
B- Wal-Mart will sell more by St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target
sells all year.
C- Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco
+ K-Mart combined.
D- Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private
employer.
E- Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.
F- Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined,
and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.
G- During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy
(including Winn-Dixie).
H- Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.
I- Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the United States of which 1,906
are SuperCenters;
this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago.
J- This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur
at a Wal-Mart store.
(Earth's population is only 6.5 billion)
<<<< I find it interesting that just a few short years ago. While
visiting the Winn-Dixie Corporate offices, I overheard their telephone
operators answer their phones, "Good morning, Winn-Dixie, your low cost
leader". I guess that's not true anymore. I can't guarantee the numbers
but I can guarantee they're higher now than when this was printed.
