L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
Tuesday nights Piano Talk, and Lloyds message from Longfellow gave
Ralph reason to write the following. >>>
I don't want to be one of those old people who always talk about the
goodness of the old days, but reading the Longfellow poem Lloyd Hanson
sent you does make me wonder why we never hear things of that quality
anymore. People like that were not ashamed to write of their faith.
Then I think about last night at St John's. Hearing Wally's
granddaughters sing, then hearing the Sevigny girl sing that song for
her grandmother, and always always listening to Ventzi play and sing
makes me realize our future is in good hands, and our present is
wonderful. Add to these wonderful young people all the others who shared
their musical talent it was immeasurably better than any $75 ticket at
the Fritz.
p.s. although I have never won with a firefighters ticket you sold me
yet I will try again. How much per ticket? <<< Thanks a million for
caring and sharing Ralph. First of all, I must hasten to note that
Ralphs humble nature (?) kept him from mentioning his very talented and
beautiful daughters participation in Tuesday evenings performance.
As far as the firefighters tickets are concerned Ralph. The old adage,
the more tickets you buy, the better chance you have of winning, still
applies. It's not, always, good to mention names so let it suffice to
say your older brothers household has "invested" in ten tickets. So,..
as a lifelong friend, I can only say, let your conscience, and you
budget, be your guide.
P.S. The tickets are only $20 each and each one gives you 365 chances
to win, all or part of $11,520 in prize money.

"Scouters Will Meet in Fairdale Tonight."
A meeting to elect officers of the B-P Boy Scout district is scheduled
for Fairdale this evening (Thursday), I. E. Stenso, chairman of the
district, announced. Reps from every town in Walsh County are expected
to attend the session.
Three Grafton scouters, Mr. Stenso, Mr. H. N. Bliss and A. B Thompson
were in Crookston, Monday for a meeting of the Lake Agassiz Scout
council.
(Oops,... that was in December of 1948)

It might be beneficial to note that Bill Tollack served as Walsh County
Treasurer from 1921 to 1925.
Hi Gary,
You've made so many references lately to Bill Tollack I couldn't help
but think of him and thought perhaps you'd be interested in my story, a
REALLY OLD story which kind of incudes him.
I was born and raised at the same address (different house) that I now
live at. Our neighbors across the street when I was growing up were the
LaMarres. Mr LaMarre was the County Auditor and had an office in the
courthouse two blocks south of where we and the LaMarres lived. One of
my best friends for several years was Jean LaMarre, son of W.J. and a
really handsome child. At ages 4 and 5 we played together a lot - before
either of us were in school and neither of us had any inhibitions
(actually neither of us knew what that was).
At this time Bill Tollack was County Treasurer and his office was also
at the courthouse. Jean and I would often bring our "equipment" and set
up "house" on a large landing on the back stairway to the second story.
One day Mr. Tollack was trying to get past our "layout" and stopped to
chat; several people were standing around watching and listening as Mr.
Tollack offered us a nickel if we would kiss each other - NO PROBLEM! As
soon he handed us the nickel we headed for the candy store on 5th street
(about where the hockey rink and bar is now) and came out with 5 cents
worth of candy - quite a bit in those days! It was just so simple that
after that we would go from office to office and offer to kiss each
other for a nickel. Many offices took our offer - until Mr. LaMarre
found out what was going on and was totally shocked! He made it very
clear that would not happen again. Jean and I were kind of sad because
it seemed such an easy way to satisfy our need for sweets and it only
took a second! Jean and I still exchange Christmas cards - he visited
me every time he came to Grafton, for many years, and had occasion to
visit him and his wife once at his home in Pinehurst, NC. Aren't
memories wonderful things??
<<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Dorothy. It's the memories
of our past, that puts the gold in our future.
Or so it seems to me.

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Sally Gaustad. HAPPY
