December 27, 2006 - Wednesday - Grafton, ND

Todays Gazette is being brought to you by the makers of snowblowers.
----------------------
The current temperature is 26 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 42/19
Normal H/L temp for this date is 17/-2
So far this winter I have spent more time walking around the snowblower
in the garage than behind it on the driveway.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-----------------------
Tuesday was a pretty slow news day in Shivercity. However, during our
afternoon "coffee break" at Granny's. The discussion centered around the
quality, and quantity of local talent. Amongst the group, several,
generally, well known individuals were mentioned. Then, one member of
our group, trying to think of one specific person, looked at me and
said. "There's a young girl at our church that can really sing." as he
added, "she is really a good singer". When we asked, who, his response
was. "I can't remember her name." After thinking about it for a few
minutes, he looked at me and said. "I know you know her father,..
originally he went to your church, and now,.. he goes to ours." Holly
cow, I thought (Pardon the pun). Then I said, "Martin Luther -- you
mean?" Of course, the answer to that was "nope" not even close.
Eventually, however, we determined that the young lady with the
melodious voice was the daughter of our local Jeweler. Aren't small town
wonderful? Don't you wish everybody had one?

Lloyd wants to share the following.
He wrote: Gary:
I thought of this poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, written in 1864 a
few months before the end of the American Civil War. The five stanzas
below were set to music by John Babtiste Calkin in 1872. It has
become a standard Christmas song in some songbooks and hymnals and is,
perhaps, known to many of your readers. It seems most appropriate
for, us at this time, in our national distress over the outcomes of war.

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
Till ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men."

Thank you so much, Jim & Kaye McFarland, for the wonderful Christmas
card, and, your request for a Firefighter ticket. I have purchased one,
in your name, for Valley Ambulance and Rescue. It's a super way of
helping two wonderful local organizations.
~~~
Thank you Ray & Marcy Gourde for purchasing a couple tickets to help
our local volunteer firefighters. Ray also left a message titled 'I wish
you had my job' that we will be sharing at a later date.
~~~
Thanks too, to Danny LaHaise, Diane and Jerry Urbauer for helping our
fire department be as good as it can be.

It was little more than 26,297,992 hours ago, 600 months if that
sounds less. Dean Martin was singing Memories are Made of This over the
KNOX radio station in Grand Forks and Cindy Barclay started crying
because she had just received the very first spanking of her life. That
day, Cindy joined 150,697,361 other legal United States citizens. HAPPY
BIRTHDAY Cindy
We love you very much.

A few days ago, Susan Ordahl Eggen asked the question. Has the Grafton
Lutheran Church enlisted a new shepherd for their flock. And, if so,
who? I must admit, just this morning I had coffee with Grafton Lutherans
"temporary" shepherd, Pastor Wayne Stark and I forgot to ask him. I
guess maybe I was mesmerized by his ability to roll spotted cubes of
ivory.
Anyway, I am confidant that when those folks involved in the
appointment deem the time is right. We will be told,... maybe.

The subscription department was busy last night. Please help welcome
Mavis Boura, Erick Soltvedt along with Kevin & Devra Olmstead to our
Gazette family tree. From time to time we hope you will find cause, and,
be willing to share a part of your world with us.

Webster certainly must have had a plan, when he put ignore and
ignorance side by side in his "book of words and thought".

Write if you can, call if you can't, and, tell your loved ones they are,
before it's too late.
