March 8, 2008 - Saturday

Todays Gazette contains information about a very SPECIAL EVENT April
5th - 13th at The Ralph Engelstad Arena.
----------------------
The current temperature is 10 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 11/-20
Normal H/L temp for this date is 30/13
It was 48 degrees on this date in 1948.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
---------------------------
Shortly after 7 am Friday morning the Grafton Volunteer fire department
responded to a fire call at the SUBWAY Sandwich assembly facility in the
Western Plaza complex. At this point I'm not sure what caused the fire
or even how much damage the facility sustained.
So far, no word on when, or even if, Subway will reopen again in that
location. They are scheduled to move into a brand new location in the BP
gas station next to Simonsons Station Store later this spring. Who
knows, they may feature a "scorched beef sandwich with smoked lettuce
salad on the side" special when they reopen. Or so it seems to me.
---------------------------
Evidently three energetic young individuals decided the 2008 State High
School Hockey Trophy - garnered by the G-PR Spoilers - belonged to them.
According to the news over KXPO Radio Friday morning, three people -
reported to be from a larger town than Grafton. Broke into our school
attempting to get the trophy. As I understand it, there was only three
pirates involved in the raid, so,... it could be considered another
"Norwegian Power play" of sorts, to obtain the 2008 State Hockey Trophy.
And, I suppose it is fair to say that "getting the trophy was their
goal". (Pardon the pun)
Anyway, rumor has it, at the very least, those three young boys will be
making a short trip "up the Red River" before they will actually get
back home again.
Evidently, some of that late night event was captured on video. And,
I'm told it IS legal to use a "video replay" to determine if the attempt
did in fact comply with high school sports regulations for winning a
state high school hockey trophy.
------------------------
IT ISN'T a RUMOR any longer. Wally's Supermarket's store in Roseau has
been sold. We WILL be able to pick up Doug's Donut Holes in Roseau this
summer when we stop there on the way to Rocky Point. The Roseau stores
new owners presently operate Doug's Supermarket in Warroad.

Ralph Kingsbury shared his thoughts about Elton Ringsak. He wrote. >>>>
If you ever watched the movie Patton where the general fires an
ineffective battalion commander and gives the job to a subordinate that
was Elton Ringsak who got the job and then was Patton's example of how a
leader should be.
Besides North Africa, Elton also was in on the invasion of Sicily and
Italy. It was Italy where he was wounded at Mount Cassino. With wounds
to his head he kept fighting. Audie Murphy had nothing on Elton except
Elton gotten wounded before he could receive more than about 6 medals
for bravery. If you want to know go to the Union at UND and up the front
steps to the 2nd floor. Elton's medals and citations are there along
with his helmet that has the hole where flak from a German gun entered
and then went into his brain. But he just kept fighting. It is well
worth the trip to read the citations and realize what this guy from
Grafton did for us. <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Ralph.

AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE... Although I can't really
verify it's authenticity. >>>
A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on
a tour. Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by
plane.
At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in
his carry on. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs
officer asked sarcastically.
Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."
The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have
to show it."
"Impossible.... Americans always have to show your passports
on arrival in France !"
The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then
he quietly explained. "Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day
in '44 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find any damn Frenchmen
to show it to. <<<<
