March 10, 2008 - Monday

Todays Gazette is brought to you by all the members of the Grafton
Curling Club.

The current temperature is 6 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 14/-6
Normal H/L temp on this date is 31/14
It was 54 degrees on this date in 1954, but don't tell Al Gore.

Rumor has it the Subway Sandwich Store won't reopen again in it's
present location. Evidently, after the fire, the beef was over cooked,
and there isn't much demand for a smoked lettuce salad.

I'm not sure if anyone has given any thought to building a more secure
trophy room. I mentioned that, because of the following. Dawn wrote >>>
Hi Gary -
When I learned of the threesome seeking the hockey trophy, I really
thought that there should be some punishment better than any court
should offer. I propose that these three individuals be asked to learn
the Grafton High School song and be accompanied by the high school band
while preforming it in front of the high school students and the public.
Too often these days, we turn to the courts to solve our problems and
this would be a fitting punishment - provided of course that they did
not damage any of the school property while in search of the trophy. If
so, they should of course pay for any damages as well.
Dawn Keeley <<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Dawn. It's a
good thing the three young trophy dash participants didn't wait a few
more days or they might have gotten the latest entry in Grafton's trophy
case......
I am please to report that the Bantam B-2 hockey team hauled home a 1st
place state trophy Sunday night. The team, as I understand it, is made
up of young hockey players, (our Grandson Dilan is one of them) from the
Grafton and Park River areas. They travelled to the southwest corner of
the state over the weekend to participate in the tournament.
Returning home, the 1st place winning team was met, first, on the west
edge of Park River by a large contingent of Park River folks and the
team was paraded down their mainstreet by Park River emergency vehicles.
Then the entire entourage proceeded on to Grafton where the team
transferred into a bus and our local police, ambulance and fire
equipment lead the young champions down mainstreet with lights flashing,
sirens blaring and horns honking.
(Harriet Dosmann was even blinking her porch lights as we passed by.) I
didn't get a count on the number of cars in the procession, however, it
was more than 7 city blocks long.
It will be a "congratulations and welcome home" that those boys will
never forget.
Aren't small towns wonderful?

Speaking of small towns and tournaments. Here's another one. >>>>
Hi Gary,
Just wanted to mention that the Grafton boys' basketball team is
headed for the state tournament this week in Fargo!!! It's a great
accomplishment for a great group of kids and coaches. I wanted to
mention it to you in case you wanted to include it in an upcoming issue
of the Gazette for those folks who read your "publication" from across
the country (and world!) and may not have heard the news yet!!
From what I was told, the last time the boys went to state was in
1987-88 and that was Class A. The last time Grafton boys went to the ND
State Class B tourney was nearly 80 years ago!!
Like you've said before, you'd mention "news" in the Gazette if you're
told about it....so here's an attempt to inform you in case you hadn't
heard yet!
Take care! <<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing. And, as you
can see, as per your request. I didn't use your name either.
--------------------------
Now then, we really think a city, region, or even a state championship
is something. AND, it is. However, beginning April 3rd everyone will
have the opportunity to attend a WORLD CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP at the
fabulous Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, ND.
===== What is Curling? =====
(I stole some of the follow explanation from someone that understands
the game much better than I.)
It's seemingly simple. A granite rock, a sheet of ice, a target 42
yards away. Finish with your rocks closer to the target than your
opponents', and your team of four wins a game in which keen competition
mixes with a wonderful social atmosphere.
But wait: this is an Olympic sport, played by people across the world
from ages 8 to 80. There must be more to it.
And there is. The rocks curl (or curve) down the sheet, traveling over
an ice surface rife with nuances thanks to specially applied 'pebble' of
frozen mist that lets the 42-pound rocks move with surprisingly little
effort. Finesse and control of how hard rocks are thrown (the 'weight')
become the important factors, not strength. The weight of a thrown rock
affects the amount of curl, but a rock's progress can be altered by
judicious sweeping to polish the ice in front of it, making a rock move
both farther and straighter. Added complications are crafty opponents
who place their stones in positions to block your access to the center
of the target (the 'house'). You have to think several rocks ahead to
make sure that, at the completion of each end of 16 rocks, your rocks
are closest to the button, the center of the house.
So curling is a game of strategy, of finesse, and yes of fitness. A
team's sweepers travel up to two miles in a game and, at the highest
levels of the sport, expend the same energy as a sprinter in a 200 meter
dash.
All of this, I might add, has done precious little to keep the opening
ceremonies MC, John Aasand slim and trim.
Anyway, I did receive an answer to the television broadcast question
Mary asked about. Chris said,..... CBC will be covering 6 hours of the
championship weekend. No weekday draws will be televised. Thanks a
million for caring and sharing Chris. For you folks down by the gulf,
CBC (I think) is Canadian Broadcast Company.

~~~ Question of the day. ~~~
Does anybody know that the light is out on the water tower? Or,... does
anybody really care?
Please welcome Bob and Nancy Smithmyer to the Gazette family. Bob, is
the individual I most respectfully refer to as "the gentle giant" member
of "our" Ohio Fox Hunting friends.
