L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
---------------------
The Goose story and the mention of the terrible fire at Wally's
fostered comments from members of my gene pool, among others. Kelly
wrote, >>> Each time I hear the goose story, it is just as touching as
the last time. Thanks Dad. I love you. Kelly <<< I love you
too, Kelly

Then Wendy sent the following. >>>
You simply amaze me more everyday with your talent and the grace in
which your words fall to type. Every time I see or hear you and mom
speak of the firefighters whether selling tickets or sharing a proud
moment, I, like I'm certain alot of others do, read it through tear
filled eyes and swallow hard to try to push down that lump. There are
alot of people that do what my brother (your son) does everyday in this
world, what makes him different than some is he does it with the same
love and compassion that a heart surgeon may. I too am so proud of Jeff
that sometimes I can hardly believe one man can be so much, to so many,
and still find the time to give more. Kylie said it best one day... I
don't remember exactly what the conversation was about or how it started
but what I do remember is that she in all her wisdom looked at me and
said.... "Nana, Uncle Jeff is my Hero". I looked at her and said what do
you mean sweetheart. She said, "he is a fireman right?" I proudly said
yes and she quickly remarked... "Well, he is my hero" I IMMEDIATELY
called Jeff and half crying told him what she said. With the Grandpa Moe
giggle.... OH... what a little pumpkin.... Kylie was only two when she
said that and I knew by her tone and conviction it truly was what she
believes. Living in a small town has a ton of advantages but above all
they have a group of men that get out of bed a little quicker, throw
their mismatched clothing on on the way out the door and drive a little
faster to the fire hall. Its their town grocery store, hardware store,
neighbors house that they are fighting to save. I venture to guess they
do their job with a lot more heart than firefighters in a bigger city.
After all, they know or have a connection to every fire in their small
town. I remember Jeff leaping from the table to get to Wally's that
Easter Sunday. I remember mom's face when he did it. She could have
begged him not to go and she didn't she knew and so did he. It wasn't
long and we were all there somewhere at the fire seeing if sandwiches
were needed. standing back watching over our extended family and when
the first fireman was being carried out of the building due to the
oxygen running out we all felt that scare. It didnt matter who it was.
Happy Birthday to my Papa (Demester) I missed him alot today
I love you both...Happy Easter...

The next one comes from our son Jeff. I'm sure he remembers that day as
well as any. He wrote: >>> Once again I must say how much I love you
both. I too remember the Wally's fire, like it was yesterday. Chad
Bjorneby and I were the first two in, we got to the back room and found
flames above the meat dept. The heat was pretty intense, so we had to
back off, and just as we did we heard the call to get out as the fire
had begun to burn through the roof. We did as we were told and got out.
What a feelingseeing that fire from the outside. Wondering, if we had
just stayed in there a few more minutes, if it would have changed the
outcome of the whole fire. I realize the rest of the crew was outside
seeing things we couldn't.They wouldn't of told us to get out if it
wasn't bad.
The group of guy's that make up the Grafton Volunteer fire dept. are
second to NONE, each and every one of themare an asset to the dept.
in one form or another. I can't remember how many hour's/day's we were
on scene, that's probably a good question for some of the
firefightersfamily members.I do remember falling asleep on the six
inch supply line and having Larry Barry snap my picture.I tried to
buy that picture, but he said I couldn't afford it. The rest of that
fireis a blur to me, I'm not sure if I don't remember, or, if I just
want to forget. However I do remember Jerry McCarty, our fire marshal
sitting on top of the roof of Francis Phelan's potato bins, coming up
with a cause.
We (as fireman)alway's seem to think we could have done better.
Although sometimes it's simply beyond our control. Assome of the
instructor's we have had up here have said, our response time is better
than some paid departments. Thataloneis something to be proud of.
I remember Mom calling and saying that day, as she so often does, to
come hungry there is lot's of food. Believe meI was coming hungry.
Unfortunately, as I remember, it wasNOT Mom's wonderful spread of
turkey and all the fixings that I remember, it waspizza from
PizzaHut, and burgers from Hardee's. They too were therekeeping
usfed, along with the Salvation Army who had showed up with
sandwich's. Boy it sure doesn't seem like twelve years ago.
AsI sit here now, hungry waiting to go toBrad and Denise's house
for another fineEaster meal, I cringe every timemy pager beeps,
wondering if it will beFire, Ambulance orPolice call. Rest assured
if any of these groupsare needed, THEY WILL BE THERE, and, they
wouldn't think twice about it either.Well I better sign off now and I
will see you at Brad and Denise's. I hope. With LOVE, your son
Jeff <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Jeff. "It's the good
in some, that brings out the best in others."
