Rumor has it the individuals that originally planned on starting a new
business in the former Hvidsten Implement building on Griggs and 4th
street,..... won't. The same information source says those individuals
are presently gainfully employed on the east side of town.
------------------------
Hagens Construction equipment was busy Tuesday removing the large
Family Dollar sign along side hiway 17. So far there's no indication if
anything will replace it, or, if the company is just trying to "save a
buck" (pardon the pun) on their electricity bill.
------------------------
Speaking of Dollar stores. I wonder if a reasonable contingent of local
business people have been over and tried talking the folks from Dollar
sense into staying in town. I certainly looks like they've been busy
lately.
------------------------
We stopped at Westside Drive Inn for a Strawberry Butter ice cream cone
for Pat Tuesday night, they're her favorite. As we were waiting for
Jenny to bring out the cone. I was surprised, not only at the numbers of
folks patronizing Westside, but also at the people who were patronizing
Westside. As a matter of fact, it left little doubt in my mind. A major
portion of the folks I saw there last night, were there not just because
of the Drive Inn experience, but because the food and the service is
fantastic as well.
-------------------------
Yup, it's almost spring. I noticed someone out mowing their lawn
yesterday and all sorts of farm equipment are in various stages of
ready-to-go. And, several avenue pot holes have already acquired
colorful names that shouldn't be repeated in this venue.

I am pleased to share Mayor Todd Burianeks message with the membership
today as well. He wrote. >>> Gary
First, Happy Birthday (belated). How's it feel to finally be 50 (or
to be 50, again?).
In my youth, the first signs of spring were the robins in the
yard, Dairy Queen reopening and the first pack of baseball
cardsarrived at Ben Franklin. I loved those 10 cent packs!
Now the Dairy Queen (Ice Box) is open almost year round, the
baseball card companies make their product availableright after
Christmas(and for much more than 10 cents a pack) and I've come to
appreciate the vee-line of geese overhead as they make their way to
their northern homes.
For me it's officially spring when the Beet mountain west of town
turns into a hill and then has only a few odd scraps here and there on
the ground and WESTSIDE OPENS!!!!
So good to see spring is here!!!
Todd Burianek <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Todd.
It's okay to enjoy a passing flock of geese. Just be careful you don't
look straight up, when you do.
------------------------
Mary sent the following. >>>
Gary, thanks for the West Side report my mouth is still watering.
I'm glad you had a nice Birthday, you deserve it.
I think I'm more excited for the Country Smokehouse to open then those
who are opening it. I have talked to Brian, John B., John T. & David
about how happy I am they chose to invest in Grafton's future, they
could have opened it just about anywhere. It shows their loyalty to our
"Small Town America" and that helps us all! Thanks for seeing the good
in our community and making it known to all those you come in contact
with. I thought you might like the following quote.

Have I mentioned I have a bright red Arctic Cat 400 auto 4-wheeler for
sale? If I have, I must not have mentioned it to anyone that cares. One
person told me if it had been a Polaris, it would have been sold in a
heart beat. I'd be willing to settle for a deep breath or two jerks of a
cats tail. (pardon the pun)

consider going over to the Minto Fire and Rescue Squad's annual

be taken. When you give, imagine that the fire alarm has just gone
off,..... and the fire is at your house.

It doesn't look like we'll have to worry about my new Arctic Cat

The West Side Drive Inn opened today, on time, as scheduled. It sounds
like most of the members of my gene pool, either ate there or was
working there Monday.
I had one of the new Wagon Master Jr's and it was just as scrumptious
as I remembered them from last year. The Tater Gems were prepared to
perfection and the milk (I couldn't have a milk shake because I ate to
much for lunch) was very cold and obviously freshly squeezed from
contented cows.
Then, as I was enjoying my first Wagon Master of the year. Pat said,
"look over there at the sign." As I peered where she was pointing, I was
surprised to see, on the bottom line of West Side Drive Inns large sign,
Happy B-Day Gary Moe. WOW, I was impressed. A real bona-fide Hiway
billboard sign with a birthday wish for me. WOW, not only is the food
fantastic at West Side Drive Inn. The people there, are too.
---------------------------
Rumor has it that Patrick & Kande Koehmstedt will be moving just down
the street from us. Welcome Pat and Kande, it will be wonderful having
you in the neighborhood.

Our good friend Dr. Bob Harris sent the following. >>> Good morning
Gary,
Great Easter message! Those of us that feel as we do about God's
grace need to be more proactive so not to let the agnostics wear us down
and take the undecided with them.
We are enjoying our Florida "winter" but miss the old friends and
families. We will renew sometime this summer.
Keep us informed in your inimitable fashion.
Dr Bob <<< Thanks a million Bob. I'm not real sure what inimitable

Holy Hanna........14 degrees! And here, we are "suffering" with it in

But the daffs and forsythias are blooming and Spring in the East
offers incredible beauty in all the blossoming trees and bushes. The
local Mussleman's fruit orchards are a bit weary of the freezing temps
concerning the buds that are out and ready to burst.
Blessings to you and your family as you celebrate Easter. There has got
to be some Walleyes in the freezer, ja? Golly, no lutefisk or lefse left
over from Christmas, here! Now, that's REAL fasting!!

How I love your Shivercity sharing. Don't try to say that too fast!!
Soon to be Skeeterville Scuttlebutt!!
ha det.....k <<< Thanks a million Kermit. I hope you remember I am only
half Norwegian. So I can only understand the ja Lutefisk and Lefse part.
I'm wondering if the ha det......k has something to do with the way I
bait a hook? If I remember right, dad would always answer "Buttered Bra"
(or something) when someone would ask him how he was doing.
------------------------
Speaking of baiting a hook. I wonder if Jack Arnesen is aware the early
morning Imus program on MSNBC has change the name of the show from "Imus
in the Morning" to "Imus in Mourning"? It seems old Imus got caught
telling "off colored" jokes, if you know what I mean.

-------------------------
Thanks also to Dorothy Wentz for helping our local Firefighters be all
they can be.
The 2007 Grafton Volunteer Fire Department Calendar Drawing is for 368
draws with total cash prizes amounting to $11,520. Tickets are just $20
each with a special Shivercity Gazette offer of 5 tickets for only $100.
AND, if you send in right away, you can get an entire "book" of tickets
(10 per book) for $200.
Please forgive me if I seem a bit aggressive. In the past few years I
have come to learn it simply isn't in the nature of a person that lives
and dies with a "volunteer mentality" such as that of Firefighters,
Ambulance & Rescue squads, Legionaires and local law enforcement
officers, to ask for help and assistance. They are to preoccupied with
giving rather than receiving. HENCE, I am asking for them. Please
consider helping them help us all.
-------------------------
I must extend my most humble and sincere appreciation to everyone that
sent me birthday cards, notes and phone calls. That I might be
remembered, by so many, on the anniversary of my birth is most humbling
indeed.
The messages I've received are all very special to me and I am most
thankful. I would like to share one that Pat and I found very touching.
>>> Hi Gary and Pat: What a lovely family you have raised, thanks for

You simply amaze me more everyday with your talent and the grace in
which your words fall to type. Every time I see or hear you and mom
speak of the firefighters whether selling tickets or sharing a proud
moment, I, like I'm certain alot of others do, read it through tear
filled eyes and swallow hard to try to push down that lump. There are
alot of people that do what my brother (your son) does everyday in this
world, what makes him different than some is he does it with the same
love and compassion that a heart surgeon may. I too am so proud of Jeff
that sometimes I can hardly believe one man can be so much, to so many,
and still find the time to give more. Kylie said it best one day... I
don't remember exactly what the conversation was about or how it started
but what I do remember is that she in all her wisdom looked at me and
said.... "Nana, Uncle Jeff is my Hero". I looked at her and said what do
you mean sweetheart. She said, "he is a fireman right?" I proudly said
yes and she quickly remarked... "Well, he is my hero" I IMMEDIATELY
called Jeff and half crying told him what she said. With the Grandpa Moe
giggle.... OH... what a little pumpkin.... Kylie was only two when she
said that and I knew by her tone and conviction it truly was what she
believes. Living in a small town has a ton of advantages but above all
they have a group of men that get out of bed a little quicker, throw
their mismatched clothing on on the way out the door and drive a little
faster to the fire hall. Its their town grocery store, hardware store,
neighbors house that they are fighting to save. I venture to guess they
do their job with a lot more heart than firefighters in a bigger city.
After all, they know or have a connection to every fire in their small
town. I remember Jeff leaping from the table to get to Wally's that
Easter Sunday. I remember mom's face when he did it. She could have
begged him not to go and she didn't she knew and so did he. It wasn't
long and we were all there somewhere at the fire seeing if sandwiches
were needed. standing back watching over our extended family and when
the first fireman was being carried out of the building due to the
oxygen running out we all felt that scare. It didnt matter who it was.
Happy Birthday to my Papa (Demester) I missed him alot today
I love you both...Happy Easter...
++++
The next one comes from our son Jeff. I'm sure he remembers that day as
well as any. He wrote: >>> Once again I must say how much I love you
both. I too remember the Wally's fire, like it was yesterday. Chad
Bjorneby and I were the first two in, we got to the back room and found
flames above the meat dept. The heat was pretty intense, so we had to
back off, and just as we did we heard the call to get out as the fire
had begun to burn through the roof. We did as we were told and got out.
What a feelingseeing that fire from the outside. Wondering, if we had
just stayed in there a few more minutes, if it would have changed the
outcome of the whole fire. I realize the rest of the crew was outside
seeing things we couldn't.They wouldn't of told us to get out if it
wasn't bad.
The group of guy's that make up the Grafton Volunteer fire dept. are
second to NONE, each and every one of themare an asset to the dept.
in one form or another. I can't remember how many hour's/day's we were
on scene, that's probably a good question for some of the
firefightersfamily members.I do remember falling asleep on the six
inch supply line and having Larry Barry snap my picture.I tried to
buy that picture, but he said I couldn't afford it. The rest of that
fireis a blur to me, I'm not sure if I don't remember, or, if I just
want to forget. However I do remember Jerry McCarty, our fire marshal
sitting on top of the roof of Francis Phelan's potato bins, coming up
with a cause.
We (as fireman)alway's seem to think we could have done better.
Although sometimes it's simply beyond our control. Assome of the
instructor's we have had up here have said, our response time is better
than some paid departments. Thataloneis something to be proud of.
I remember Mom calling and saying that day, as she so often does, to
come hungry there is lot's of food. Believe meI was coming hungry.
Unfortunately, as I remember, it wasNOT Mom's wonderful spread of
turkey and all the fixings that I remember, it waspizza from
PizzaHut, and burgers from Hardee's. They too were therekeeping
usfed, along with the Salvation Army who had showed up with
sandwich's. Boy it sure doesn't seem like twelve years ago.
AsI sit here now, hungry waiting to go toBrad and Denise's house
for another fineEaster meal, I cringe every timemy pager beeps,
wondering if it will beFire, Ambulance orPolice call. Rest assured
if any of these groupsare needed, THEY WILL BE THERE, and, they
wouldn't think twice about it either.Well I better sign off now and I
will see you at Brad and Denise's. I hope. With LOVE, your son
Jeff <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Jeff. "It's the good

The ink has hardly dried on Duane Kargel's Gazette subscription and
already he cared to share the following. >>> Gary: I am getting

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
It's Easter Sunday. Judging by the number of cars with out-of-state
license plates, we will be sharing the celebration of the "resurrection"
with many guests.
At first I struggled with what to write on this special day for
Christians. Or, if I should even send out a Gazette today at all. Then I
began thinking of yesterdays Gazette and the story of migrating geese. I
realized that Easter, and the story of migrating geese have much in
common.
Then I remembered a particular Easter Sunday twelve years ago. I was
reminded of the caring and sharing on that particular day and how it has
helped, and, in some ways, changed the lives of so many in our wonderful
little community forever.
I was reminded too, of the note I sent out about that day to the grower
owners of American Crystal Sugar Company. Needless to say, if I could
rewrite that message today, I might change a word or two. Maybe add a
bit here, and a little there, in hopes of making it more interesting or
meaningful.
Anyway, the following note is just as it was sent out, the day after
Easter, twelve Easter Sundays ago.
====== THE - GOOSE - STORY ======
Once again, on Easter Sunday, I had the opportunity to relate the GOOSE
STORY in real terms.
Sunday afternoon (April 16, 1995) around 4:00pm a fire was reported at
WALLY'S SUPER MARKET in Grafton. Within 5 minutes the Grafton Fire
Department was there pumping water.
This in itself could be THE GOOSE STORY. It wasn't long however before
it was determined that the fire was bigger than the Grafton Department
could handle alone. (THIS IS THE GOOSE STORY)
Within 30 minutes, fire departments from St. Thomas, Minto and Park
River were on their way to help. These people came to help because, as
one member told me, "it was the thing to do." (Several other departments
from other area towns were also waiting to be called.)
All of the fire departments in this area are VOLUNTEER. Every
Firefighter in this area gives up something to answer a fire alarm.
Their primary compensation for doing this is self satisfaction and the
knowledge that they have truly helped someone in need.
Because of this I would ask, when you see a Firefighter, THANK THEM. I
KNOW I SURELY WILL.
P.S.
I am proud to say that my son is a firefighter, and, yes his mother
really does worry.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Now, now that I have read and re-read that message so many years after
it was written. I am reasonably pleased with what I wrote. I do wish,
however, that I had added just a few more things.
First I would commend the volunteer members of the Valley Ambulance and
Rescue squad. They too responded to the fire providing valuable guidance
and medical assistance throughout the entire ordeal. I should have
mentioned the tireless assistance given by the Grafton police
department. And, not to be forgotten should be the numerous local
residents that helped out in so many ways during and after the tragic
fire that destroyed Wally's Super Market.
In some small way, The GOOSE STORY, the disastrous fire at Wally's
Super Market twelve years ago and Easter Sunday all seem to share one
common bond.
That He cared so much, He shared his only begotten son, so that we too
can care and share, and, live together as though we are one.
P.S.
Oh yes, lest I forget, his father worries too.

HAPPY - EASTER ~~~ EVERYONE
Somehow I find it amusing that so many raise so much heck, about the
birth of Jesus and the "season" that celebrates it. Yet, the celebration
of the "season" when he died and rose again, for all. Seems to pass
relatively unscathed.
And that, in my opinion, is a good thing.
------------------------
The first time I sent out the Goose Story was almost 12 years ago. It
went out to all the American Crystal Sugar Growers that subscribed to
the DTN system. I have on occasion also shared the story with our
Gazette famly as well. I thought, when I first sent it out, it told a
wonderful story about caring and sharing. I think it's appropriate to
share it again on this day,.... the day before Easter.
======= THE GOOSE STORY =======
Next fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter --- flying
along in a V formation --- consider what science has discovered as to
why they fly that way.
As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird
immediately following. By flying in a V formation, the whole flock adds
at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its
own.
People who share a common direction and sense of community can get
where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling
on the thrust of one another.
When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and
resistance of trying to go it alone,... and quickly gets back into
formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front.
If we have as much sense as a goose we will stay in formation with
those who are headed the same way we are.
When the Head Goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wind and
another goose flies to the point.
It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs for people or for
geese flying south.
Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their
speed.
What do we say when we honk from behind?
Finally, and this is important, when a goose gets sick or is wounded
by gunshots and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with
that goose and follow it down to lend and protection.
To stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly, or until it
dies; and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another
formation to catch up with their group.
If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like
that.
~~~~ Or, so it seems to me ~~~~
_______________
Today, would be an absolutely fantastic day to tell those that you
care for, how much you love and need them, and your willingness to
share.
From everyone in our house, to everyone in yours. ~~~~~~~~~~
Grafton's growing is showing. Of course that doesn't mean we don't
have lots of room for improvement. Every day I receive numerous notes on
various topics. Some amusing while others take on a more serious tone.
The mention of the Walsh County Records 'why we shop, or, why we don't
shop' in Grafton questionnaire has sparked several interesting comments.
I have taken the liberty of changing a few words in the following for
the purposes of making it "gender neutral". However, with the exception,
I believe the following 77 words not only cuts the question to the bone,
they provide significant direction in resolving the problem.
~~~ The fact is you cant make people shop Grafton. There will be
personality conflicts, people feeling slighted by something somebody
saidor whatever, people are people.
I feel that we cant just expect people to shop local. We need to make
their shopping/purchasing experience as pleasant and carefree as
possible at a fair price. Local businessman must advertise/promote and
let people know
that Grafton merchants can help people with most things right here in
Grafton. ~~~ The previous 77 words could, and, should be copied,
laminated and displayed in a conspicuous place in every local business
establishment.
Put another way, "It is the responsibility of those who's destiny
relies on people. To make certain the people they rely on, share the
same destiny." Or, "It is the people of a community, that dictates the
life of the community."
Or so it seems to me
----------------------------
By the sounds of the next note, Loren Lundberg remembered Chandler
Field, then he took out his check book to reminisce a little. He wrote.
>>>
Gary:
Baseball check is in the mail - would have made it more if they
still played in Chandler field - I would have designated it all as "for
removal of rocks around second base".
Interesting comparison of # of births in 1940 and 1941. Didn't
your older brother David ever sit you down and explain the 1941 "Go For
Quality" campaign??????
From the depths of old memories (which means it's probably
wrong), I seem to recall a Walsh County population in 1950 as 20-21000.
A recent story (USA Today) used the county in a story about population
shifts and recited it currently as 11000+. True?
LL <<< Thanks a million for the check Loren. I'm not sure about the
county population. I can tell you, however, one of it's residents is
heavier than he should be. I can also tell you that of the 1,754
patience in 1941. 433 came from Grafton, 1056 from other points in North
Dakota, 27 from other states and 1 from Canada. That same year 652
operations were performed and there were 10 doctors in the area
providing that service. 6 Dr's from Grafton, 2 from Park River, 1 from
Minto and 1 from Edinburg.

This is a re-enactment of the Last Supper--performed Maundy Thursday
of Holy Week as it actually happened--and I cannot even think about it
without getting shivers. It is so real. This is a magnificent
production put on by the heroesof our little towns, and it must be
seen to be believed. For those who have seen it before, there is a
TOP SECRET new ending this year, and I can't seem to get so much as a
hint from any of the guys, so I must not have a security clearance.
Kudos to Rev Lee, Mrs. Rev Terri, and all the people who work so
hard to make Easter feel like Easter by reminding us of its Real
Meaning.
Respectfully submitted,

Today is the day Lonnie (Demester) Pederson celebrates the anniversary
of her birth. For those that might wonder Lonnies age. While she was
receiving the first spanking of her life (I doubt she ever had another)
Bobby Vee's hit song "Take Good Care of my Baby" was playing over the
KGPC radio station.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Lonnie, your aunt Pat and I love you very much.

I am pleased to welcome Mike Sackett to the Gazette family and we also
welcome Janyce back from the sunny south.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-----------------------
It appears all of the reading material has been removed from the former
J. C. Penney / Houska's Hallmark / Library Coffee shop building on Main
street. It also appears that the latest rumors of the building, with
regard to it's future, are not found in fact either.
------------------------
There were 354 births reported in the Grafton Hospital last year. 60
more than the previous year, however, 40 births less than the number of
babies born in 1940.
All that, is according to the July 8, 1942 Grafton News and Times. That
same edition also reported the Deaconess Hospital admitted 1,754
Patients for the fiscal year ending June 25, 1942.
--------------------------
The latest word is the Westside Drive Inn will open for the 2007 season
next Monday April 9th. I'm not sure if Ryer decided to open his drive
inn Monday because it is my birthday, or, because it's the day after
Easter.
I also understand this year there will be a new item on the menu. It
will be a smaller version of the Wagon Master. It'll be sort of a "mini
Master", I guess. Doesn't a Westside Drive Wagon Master, Tater Gems and
a Strawberry Milk Shake sound wonderful?

Good morning, Gary!
[I have a plug for the Gazette, if you think it would be
appropriate. You always say it works best when it is written by the
readers,so if you are willing to include it, something pretty
wonderful is happening this week. Anyway, here goes, edit as you
choose and thank you so much for the consideration.]
EVERYONE is invited to attend "The Soliloquies of the Twelve
Disciples" at the Federated Church this Thursday, April 5th, at 7:00
p.m.
I will be the first to admit I am completely partial, since I am
honored to be married to thewonderful guy who plays Jesus in this
production. Completely partial, and yep, glad to admit it. But
because of that, I see what he goes through to put this on, and it is

more activity for their stir crazy children this summer to attend and as
a bonus it will be fun!
Thank you in advance Gary!

I still have several $20 baseball tickets available. Besides helping
the kids in the baseball program. Monies generated by things like the

Folks are cleaning up and painting the former Johnson Used Car
Dealership and the facility will soon be reopened by J&J Otto as Otto's

vehicles, at a fare and reasonable price. It is also possible they will
be offering ATV's and small motorcycles to the interested public as
well.
------------------------
Several times in the last few days I've mentioned, and asked for your
participation in the American Legion Baseball calendar draw held in the
month of May. I might have suggested the Legion folks could really use
your help in this years baseball program. I think I mentioned tickets
were only $20 each and, that it would certainly be wonderful if you
bought more than one ticket. The Legionaires have 'carried the ball'
(pardon the pun) for as far back as the second world war. (Archie says
that was the big one) Anyway, the Legionaires have helped, backed and
sponsored numerous other projects over the years too.
For instance, Grafton's Post 41 entered a candidate in the Disabled
American Veterans "Miss North Dakota Beauty Contest". The Grand Prize
was listed as a one week all-expenses-paid trip to the St. Paul Winter
Carnival. The prize would go to the girl who sold the most tickets in
her behalf in her respective county. Top vote sellers could also qualify
for the grand prize of $7,000.
This years candidate garnered votes, so far from George Harris,
Bellerud's, Fish's Variety store, Red Owl Grocery, Tweet's Dry Cleaning,
Willey's Jewelry store, Dr. John Gorder, Hill's Machine shop, East Side
Grocery, Dahl and Dahl, DePuy and DePuy, E. R. Nyman and the Homme
Investment company.
The Walsh County entrant in the DAV contest is a native of Grafton and
a graduate of the high school here. She entered in a Junior Chamber of
Commerce beauty contest in Grafton, she carried off top honors and was
named "Queen Sparkle" at the city hall ball.
Oh yes, I almost forgot. The beautiful young lady I speak of, is, or
was at the time, Miss Hope Johnson the daughter of Lux and Al Johnson
and currently Mrs Marlin Torkelson. The contest, according to the
article in the December 16, 1948 Walsh County Record was over on Jan.
31, 1949. Aren't memories wonderful?
-------------------------
CONFUSE; according to my Webster. To mix up; put into disorder. To
bewilder or to mistake the identity. Maybe that explains why I'm
confused.
For instance the winner, I think, of Grafton's 125 year celebration
logo was Ann McCann. Ann has operated a very professional, successful,
sign business in Grafton for many years. She has invested significant
dollars in her business and, unfortunately, as I understand it, may well
be offering the business up for sale, for lack of sufficient area
support to justify the investment.
I understand the Walsh County Record has also added sign making to
their list printed promotional materials. Ironically, Ann pay's the
Record to advertise her business.
Lately, as I understand it, Waynes Heating and Cooling has also entered
into the sign making business. Once again, ironically, Wayne too, pay's
the Record to advertise. Now then,... that's business and of course one
shouldn't take it serious.
HOWEVER, The Walsh County Record, Ann McCann's Letter Perfect sign
Company and Waynes Heating and Cooling, along with a myriad of other
Grafton area businesses, make up the Grafton Area Chamber of Commerce.
For several weeks now, the Record has been running a ¼ page
questionnaire in their paper asking why we DO or why we DON'T shop in
Grafton. Which I can only assume is to help promote the business
community of Grafton. AND,.. THEN, and here's the confusing part. There
is an advertisement on the Grafton Chamber of Commerce cable Channel
three for a sign business from a town forty miles away from here.
I'm confused. Who is trying to promote what for whom, and, to what end.
The Walsh County Record is and should be in the business of selling
advertisements to the entire world. KXPO Radio is in business and can
only exist if it sells advertisements on the air.
It seems a bit fatuous to me that the folks that make up and support
the Chamber are, in effect, letting the fox in their own chicken coop.
It would seem more logical to me, when folks from outside our business
(Chamber) community call to advertise, that they should be directed to
"our" local businesses that pay their taxes providing such services.
Or so it seems to me.

Just the other day I was wondering how our new wrestling program is
doing. Thanks to Brad Martinson for caring and sharing some insight. >>>
Getting to run with hockey over the winter months I get to check out
some of the other communities, while in Crookston I noticed a sign in
the window of Happy Joes Pizza "Keep Crookston in business, keep
business in Crookston". That is pretty much the message all over if the
smaller towns are to survive the economic growth of the larger cities.
A giant pat on the back of all of those involved with making the 1st
wrestling tournament in Grafton a huge success. Talking with Gene
Fayette, he had expected about 200 wrestlers but was overwhelmed with
his guess of over 350 that had showed up. You might want to double check
with him on the exact number as he was just guessing. Nonetheless it was
exciting to watch eight matches going on simultaneously. It was the
first wrestling event I've been to and didn't know what to expect. Gene
Fayette, Brad Larson and company did an excellent job. Thanks Guys. <<<
Thank you Brad. Gene and many others have worked long and hard to get
Wrestling started in Grafton. Our school system and our community will
be a better place because of their efforts.
Maybe, with a little luck, "our" local business community will take to
heart the sign in Crookstons Happy Joe's Pizza.

Jose Cole's Circus was in town Friday night under the auspices of the
Grafton Chamber of Commerce. The Jose Cole operation brings good clean
family entertainment to small communities across the nation. The Grafton
business community, once again, should be commended for sponsoring down
home, holsum, entertainment for the residents of the Grafton area.
I must admit, I not only enjoyed the performances provided by the
circus folks. I also enjoyed watching several of my grandchildren, and,
one great grandchild participate as well. As I suspected, the elephant
rides during intermission were a huge success. I will admit, however, I
was a bit disappointed to find out that I (-- and, I'm really having
trouble explaining this one --) am to big to ride an elephant. To be
specific, the announcer said, "during the intermission children and
'small adults' will be able to ride the elephant."
Well, I'm not a child, and, the last time I looked, I couldn't possibly
qualify as a "small adult".
ANYWAY, I would like to thank the Grafton Chamber of Commerce for
providing folks in the Grafton area a wonderful fun filled evening.
----------------------
Have you answered the Walsh County Records "Why do you shop, or, Why
don't you shop Grafton? Although it does say right under the question
that it (the questionnaire) is unscientific. I too, have looked at the
questionnaire, several times. I have pondered several variations of
'possible' answers. And, then it struck me. That questionnaire shouldn't
be going to customers, or consumers at all. It should be going, hand
delivered if possible, to the business community of "our" community.
It is the responsibility of the business community to provide the
incentives necessary to ensure consumer participation and the long term
viability of their organization. Or so it seems to me.

The following note, from Grafton auto dealer Jeff Hanson, is in
response to Gary Fischer's comments about "foreign cars" in an earlier
Gazette. Jeff wrote, >>> Gary, I thought I would write you a little note
on my opinion of the auto industry. I am not trying to beat my own
drum, as I know from dealing with general motors on a daily basis that
they are far from perfect. Sometimes when you live amongst them, it is
easier to see the flaws in friends and neighbors and believe that they
are flawed, than it is to see the good in them. The same principle
also applies to local hospitals, businesses and city and county
administrations (but that's a whole different subject). The reality
is that most manufacturers these days make a pretty good product.
Back in the 70's and 80's when the big three (GM, Ford, and Chrysler)
held most of the market share they were there own, only competition.
Now there are more than 38 different brands of automobiles sold in the
USA. All of them make a % of there vehicles or parts of there
vehicles in America. Toyota currently imports 52% of the parts on the
vehicles produced in America. I know that they do provide jobs and
benefits to many Americans. Truth be told, they make a good
product. To make the assumption that they contribute even a fraction
of what GM does because GM has a plant or two outside the USA is a
falsehood. I know that Gary Fischer was mostly asking a question
rather than making a statement, just trying to apply a fact or two.
I write this to you as a friend for information.<<< Thanks a million
Jeff. The world is continually getting more and more difficult to
understand. For instance, the staunch union man, willing to go out on
strike for the good of "his union". Yet hastens to shop at non-union
shops such as Wal-Mart, because they can sell stuff cheaper because they
not only do not have a union shop, they purchase much of their
merchandise from foreign countries that have absolutely no, or
miniscule, labor and environmental rules and regulations.

Ethnic lunch is. I hope Norwegians can eat it without it turning to
methane.

The American Legion Post 41 still must find funds to finance the
American Legion ball team.
One of this years goals, if sufficient funds allow, is to purchase
new jerseys, some of which are 11 years old. For the major part of the
past 60 years, Legionaires, the men and women of our community that put
their lives on the line so we could all play ball, have worked very hard
raising and contributing the money needed to support American Legion
Baseball.
Today, while most members of the post are flirting with the silver
anniversary of their birth. It might well behoove those of us with fewer
candles on our cake, and the energy and resources to help carry the
load. To do what we can to help the Legionaires support the Legion
baseball program.
To that end I am asking those of you willing to help maintain the
Grafton Baseball program, to consider making out a check (to Grafton
Baseball) for $20 for one ticket, $40 for two and if you send in your
check right away. You can purchase all 5 tickets for a mere $100.
Along with really helping the folks that have already really
helped us, you will be getting 23 weekday chances at $50 and 4 Saturday
chances at $100. The drawings will be held in the "merry" month of May.
You can send the checks to me:
Gary Moe 764 Birch Court, Grafton, ND 58237. If you prefer
your name not be mentioned in the Gazette, (some of us are bashful)
please say so and it's our little secret.
Thanks a million, JR Gaustad, Hod Hutson, Fred Stark, Jerry Raumin,
Frank McCann, Bruce Eikenberry, Harlan Thompson, Don Hutson and Kris
Molde for helping with the Legionaires cause.

them & the company, and don't forget, the yard crew who have always been
there loading and unloading everything and delivering the materials were
ever they are needed. I think it would be wonderful if folks would stop
