Silewski, January 27 at Marketplace on 8th from 4 to 9pm.

Normal H/L temp for this date is 14/-5

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-------------------------
Tuesday morning couldn't have started out better. The furnace was
running when Granny's opened. The outside temperature was low enough for
the deepfreeze fans to run on the sugarbeet storage piles, and, "our"
Ohio Fox Hunting friends reported yesterday was another wonderful day in
Shivercity.
Then, the coup de grace for the day, so to speak. Donnie LaBerge
invited me to go for a ride in his recently finished, completely
restored, bright red 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza. Needless to say, it
not only looks great, it runs and rides like a dream. I'm almost certain
Donnies Marvelous Monza will be in this years SummerFest Parade right
along with his canary yellow Crosely.
Speaking of Donnie LaBerge, rumor has it, he thinks this would be a
fantastic year to organize a "City Band" for this years 125th
celebration. I couldn't agree more.

I'm always up for a challenge, and, a challenge "of sorts" is what Jim
is suggesting in the following note. >>> Subject: Grafton
History
I ran across the following while doing some research on Company
C, First North Dakota Infantry and the Spanish American War.
"Medal of Honor Recipients
Philippine Insurrection"
=== SLETTELAND, THOMAS ===
Rank and organization: Private, Company C, 1st North Dakota Infantry.
Place and date: Near Paete, Luzon, Philippine Islands, 12 April 1899.
Entered service at: Grafton, N. Dak. Birth: Norway. Date of issue: 11
March 1902. Citation: Single-handed and alone defended his dead and
wounded comrades against a greatly superior force of the enemy."
Being a Graftonite, I'm wondering if there are any descendants of
Private Sletteland that read the Shivercity Gazette.
Jim Upham <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Jim. You pose an
interesting question. One I really think is stretching the limits of he
Gazette family membership. I sure would be fascinating to hear from one
of Private Sletteland's descendants.
------------------------
It was a Thursday and everyone was listening to Reo Speedwagon singing
"I Can't Fight This Feeling" over local radio stations. Julie was
thinking almost the very same thing, when, at just that moment, Charlie
Watkins was born joining 226,545,805 other 'legal' American Citizens. It
was only 8,035 days ago that Charlie started blowing out birthday
candles with celebrities like Sal Mineo (1939) and Johnnie Ray (1927)
CONGRATULATIONS Charlie Watkins
We love you very much.

We are very fortunate to live in such a wonderful, caring country.
Unfortunately, some folks are not quite as fortunate as others. On the
other hand, we can be fortunate that folks like Kris Stewart, are not
only concerned about others,... she does something about it. I hope you
can find time to read, and contemplate the message Kris shares with us.

Gary,
Talk about timing! It is my job to contact you to ask for help,
spreading the word about another benefit and, before I wrote, I read
your 1/8 newsletter. The comments made by Mike, from Grand Forks about
our Bantam "B" hockey team and their coaching says a lot! You see John
Silewski is the Bantam "B" coach and the benefit I am writing to you
about is for his wife, Joanie, who is battling leukemia. Joanie and John
have been back and forth between Grafton, Rochester and Fargo. Many
people (and the boys themselves) have stepped up to the plate to help
coach this team when Silewski's were out of town. John Dusek, Greg
Campbell, Tom Grabanski, Dave Hills, Chris Silewski, Adam Silewski, Paul
Campbell, Paul Dusek, have helped coach this team. (There may be others
that I don't know about) Also, team captains Ryan, Johnie and Austin
have helped run practices. John and Joanie are back in Grafton now and
hopefully will get to stay until Joanie has a bone marrow transplant in
Rochester later this winter or spring.
There is a benefit being planned for Joanie Silewski. The Spaghetti
Dinner is planned for January, 27th from 4pm to 9pm at Marketplace.
There will also be an auction, bake sale and sundae bar. There will be a
planning meeting on Wednesday, January 10th at Marketplace at 7pm if
anyone wants to help with planning.
We would like to have Derek's friends, teammates, classmates etc.. work
at the benefit running the sundae bar and helping clear tables, empty
garbage etc.. Any hockey players or classmates (12 or older) who would
volunteer to work a shift (aprox. 2 hours) please email Kris Stewart at
kristinlee202@yahoo.com or Ross Stewart at northdakotanut@msn.com or
call Kris (360-5050) or Ross (520-9147)
We are also looking for adults willing to work a shift. We need people
to take tickets, work in the kitchen, serve food, clear tables, set
tables, fill food tables, work at the bake sale, sell raffle tickets,
hold and announce raffle winners. Mary (Tom) Dusek , is lining up people
to work - please call her if you are willing to work - 352-1651(work) or
352-3468(home).
We are looking for people to donate items for the bake sale. Please drop
off any items at Marketplace on Friday, Jauary 26th after 4pm or
Satuarday morning after 9am. We need lots of baked goodies - so please
spread the word!
Anyone willing to help set up, can show up at Marketplace on Friday the
26th around 6pm.
Any questions, suggestions, donations etc--contact people are:
Mickey 701 331-3874 email is ilovecamping64@yahoo.com
Sandy 701-352-3619
Julie 701-454-3373
Susie C. 701-352-3072
Joanie, John, Christopher, Brittney, and Derek sure appreciate all the
support, love, and prayers they have recieved during this challenging
time. Thank-you!
Gary-thanks for helping to spread the word about Joanie's benefit-- Kris
Stewart
<<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Kris. Please continue to
keep us informed as Joanie's special day approaches. I also want to ask
every Gazette family member to Joanie Silewski in your thoughts and
prayers.

GOTTA - GO - WORK - ON - MY - DASH

P.S.
Maybe someone can explain the "logic" in allowing high school students
to wear their pajama's to school. It seems that some school
administrators can't "see" a problem with that.
I don't know about anyone else, but the 'fly' in my PJ's doesn't have a
zipper or snaps. Obviously, that wouldn't be real serious if I went to
school wearing them. However, 50 years ago,... now that's a different
story. Or so it seems to me.

Write if you can, call if you can't, and, tell your loved ones they are,
before it's too late.
