I received an interesting note about hyperactivity. Of course I will
honor the "do not use my name" in the Gazette request. However the gist
of the note was that my comments "simply must be wrong", because, the
note suggests. That every time that individuals children were given
candy they would "run around the house yelling a screaming like wild
early Americans." (I'll admit I did change that part a bit.) So,... in
this persons analogy anyway, the sugar "must" be the cause.
To that I might suggest. Try giving a kid a pony and you'll see that
exact same hyperactivity. Try giving your child a new bike and again you
will see the same "hyperactivity" reaction.
Of course kids will display a heightened level of jubilation when given
candy sweetened with sugar. Candy tastes fantastic with sugar, eating
anything sweetened with good old fashioned American Crystal Sugar is a
pleasant experience. Why shouldn't they be happy. That doesn't mean kids
are "hyperactive". That means kids are active and happy.
Or so it seems to me.

As the holidays are amongus, again, it'stime to reflect on
things we have to be grateful an thankful for. I would like to take
this opportunity to thank everyone in the Grafton an surroundingareas
for the many cards,gifts,well wishes an prayers we received during
my daughters surgery in Rochester Minn. A special thank you to
Mike & Tim DeSautel, Frances, Mitch and all of the employees at Wally's.
Thanks for working with meand for allowing the timeoff I needed to
make this happen.Their expressions of thoughtfulness and concern was
overwhelming and very VERY much appreciated. Ashley is on the road to
recoveryand things are looking good. Thanks again, so much, to
each and everyone.

Speaking of wonderful people. Mary Arnesen (Arnesen's Rocky Point
Resort) stopped by the Country Smokehouse the other day. As most of you
are aware. I have often said, "if your hungry, and you are anywhere in
the northern Minnesota area, stop in at Arnesen's Rock Harbor Lodge for
some of the country's absolute best cuisine. It is really wonderful to
have folks like Mary and her culinary expertise stop in the Country
Smokehouse.

I hope ALL of our potential future politicians are paying close
attention to the ramifications involved with the teacher possible
facing, 40 lashes, (that's torture in my book folks) a prison sentence,
possible gang rape, AND, she could even be put to DEATH. WHY,..... for
giving her students a TEDDY BEAR.
It's impossible to "negotiate" with folks that live and believe in that
kind of logic. Unless I am totally misinformed. I believe it was
somewhere over their that the old adage "a eye for a eye" originated.
So,... if that be true, the teacher should get a giant teddy bear.
Or so it seems to me.

Todays Gazette is being brought to you, in part, by The Grafton
Federated Church. The home of the 2nd annual Fabulous CHILI-RAMA
COOK-OFF. This Saturday from 11 to 4. For a mere $6 a person, $15 a
family, you can enjoy one, or all, of the dozen or more chili recipes
offered at this years CHILI-RAMA COOK-OFF.

This would be a super spot for a world conference on global warming. The
Grafton Armory, which sits right in the middle of what was once a
gigantic glacier, has ample room to handle the sale of billions of
dollars worth of "carbon credits" for the very rich. I could even
arrange a spot in front of the line for the Schwarzeneggers and Gores of
the world so that they can continue spewing their bull excrement into
the same air we breath.
It is unbelieveable to me that all the rich need do is purchase a few
acres of swamp land to justify their frivolous life styles.

This is a special note from John Aasand to "GUNNER" and all his friends
and contractor buddies. He says you're supposed to load up a buss load
from Grand Forks and bring them to Grafton Saturday for the Chili-Rama
Cook-Off.
While your at it Gunner, come a little earlier Saturday and stop by St.
Johns Church for a fantastic benefit breakfast for the Grafton Wrestling
club. Gene Fayette organized Grafton's wrestling club a couple of years
ago, and, although still in it's infancy, the club seems to be doing
quite well. However, like all fledgling organizations, they can use all
of the support "our" community can muster.
As for me Gunner, I'm thinking maybe you could buy up a dozen or so
breakfast's, a couple gallons of chili and bring it all up to your place
at Rocky Point and we could have us a really super "winter
wing-ding",..... of sorts. Okay?

There is still no sign of a house on the new foundation across the
street from Ole Aasand's. However, there has been a little more activity
on the multi-unit garages for the apartment complex just south of there.

Gladys and Harry Misialek have the cutest snowman in their picture
window.

When you drive by Jim & Nicole DeSautel's home at 425 15th street West,
turn your FM radio to 88.9 to listen and watch a super neat Christmas
sound and light show.

Speaking of holiday lighting. I noticed some members of the city of
Grafton crew decorating one of the shelters in Leistikow Park. It really
looks great and certainly does light up the northwest corner of the
park.
It appears the folks from the park are still to busy to fix the flag
and get all the park department decorations functional. I'm guessing
they will get around to it, as soon as they can.
While I was driving through the park yesterday afternoon shortly after
4:00 pm I counted 5 cars in front of me and one (that I could see)
behind me.
How wonderful, I thought, that so many were able to visit Leistikow
Park and to appreciate the significant effort and enjoy the wonderful
displays.
How unfortunate, I thought, that only a few of the displays were
actually lit so they could truly be appreciated as they should. Yes, it
is still daylight at 4:00 pm, even in this country. However, it would be
an unusual day in deed that it would be to bright for the lights in the
park to be ineffective.
There must be hundreds of people stopping, shopping or just passing
through "our" community that simply can't wait til dark to appreciate
"our" parks presentations before returning to their homes. How much
more could a few additional hours of electricity possibly cost?

I received the following note, postmarked Gettysburg, from my friend
Kermit. >>> OK, Moe.......now I believe "Shivercity" is for
real....all the Skeeters are dead. 10 degrees will do it. I will keep
track of the future below zero report. I'll bet you your front tooth
(teeth) that the high school and college kids are still outdoors in
t-shirts!!
How on earth did you manage gnawing on a turkey bone? I can
sympathize.....I, too, knocked out a couple of front teeth, the year
before last, because I tripped over a manhole cover which was being
repaired on the streets of NYC. I think I would have been better off
had the cover beenleft to the side. Come to think of it, we might
have had a better view of the TG parade last Thursday from below! We
accompanied our little grandchildren, along with the hundreds of
thousands of other turkeys. Santa welcomed in the Christmas season
andled his entourage of elves and cheering throngs right to the front
doors of Macy's!! Uf da!
We wish you, your family and greater Shivercity family a very SMILEY
Holiday Season, but for the right reason! Kermit and Barbara

and your sweetheart, from me and mine, this holiday season as well. We

certainly would expect Ben to recipricate with a scrumptious brunch at
the Ice Box today.
Right Ben?
Congratulations Ben & Sara, from Pat and Gary and our entire gene pool.
After all, 9 years doesn't seem long at all,... until you realize
that's 3,375 days, or, a whopping 81,000 hours together.
Or so it seems to me.

the only person I know, that has actually asked me to open my mouth,...

The hi temp on this date in 1914 was a balmy 52°, although I'm sure
Al Gore has already documented that.
A 3 inch blanket of snowcat dust is covering our neighbors back yard.

Leistikow Park is, "beginning to look a lot like Christmas". Large
decorated candles not only light up the entrance to the park, they
herald the 102 anniversary of Johanna (Mrs. George) Greens birth.
If the red ribbons tied to tree branches indicate a plan to be
decorated, (and I think they are) there are still several additional
displays planned for this years presentation. However, already, Graftons
Leistikow Park Holiday Season Light Display is "worth the trip". (oops,
I borrowed that quote from Landowski's Furniture Store in Grafton.
Although they too are "worth the trip".)
Every day, it seems, there's something new added in the park. The
other day, for instance, I noticed that Country Smokehouse set up a
"seasonal" satellite smokehouse in the park. Then, for some reason, the
large tractor from Farm Credits display disappeared.
Then,.... on Monday, much like the Wringling Brothers and Barnum &
Bailey Circus folks used to do in the old days when they would come into
town with a train load of acts and displays. I noticed a whole string of
trucks, pickups, vans and vehicles along the east side of the park. It
proved to be Wally DeSautel and his band of faithful followers. They
were setting up, what I can best describe as "Wally's wonderland of
wonderful, whimsical, characters in the snow." Descriptions, even
pictures, can't do justice to Wally's display this year. You really have
to see it, to believe it.
The beautifully decorated tree directly across from Wally's display
also touched my heart in a special way. Unfortunately, some "buffoons"
used it to display their superior ignorance as evidence by the following

Subject: The Park Decorations
Gary -
Barnes Family Funeral Service has decided to decorate a tree out in the
park this year. The tree is a memory tree for all of the wonderful
families we have served throughout the year.
I was pretty excited to be given the ability to choose the
decorations. I picked a lovely tree and spent most of the weekend going
back and forth from Pamida to the Park. I wanted to make sure the tree
looked just right! Last night I drove my family out to the park to see
the finished product and was saddened to find it had been more or less
toilet papered. My hard work has been tainted by someone's lack of
spirit. I had to stop the car, get out, and tear down sheet after sheet
of paper and trash. I can't help but wonder why people feel the need to
do this. I recall this being an issue last year but somewhere in my
hopeful heart thought that maybe... just maybe, it would be different
this year. I will continue to monitor the tree in the park, but am sad
at the fact that I even have to.
Hopefully the spirit that has filled those of us that took the time to
decorate trees and such at the park will far outweigh the obvious
vandalizing scrooges.

Anyway, I'm guessing the folks at the park will have "all" of their

spanking new "pot-to-think-on, and, the following thought occurred to
me.
If "our" politicians can't get the folks who truly love "our" country,
ie; those folks on the other side of the political isle. How in Gods
green earth can they ever hope to "negotiate peace" with countries, and
people, that believe the only way they can get to heaven is by killing
us?
Then, I got to thinking, maybe,... just maybe... "If our politicians
weren't quite so full of the main reason I spend so much time in my
library, they might actually be able to accomplish at least some of what
we elect them to do in the first place. Or so it seems to me.

The 49th annual Grafton Area Chamber of Commerce Banquet was held this
past Monday at Market Place on 8th. The Special Guest Speaker for the
evening was Miss North Dakota "Ashley Young". And, there couldn't have
been a more beautiful speaker, (pardon the pun).
John Fox served as MC of the event, doing an admirable job. He also
told a few "Ole & Lena" jokes unfortunately, being ½ Norwegian myself,
I didn't understand most of them.
I'm sure the Walsh County Record will do a much better job reporting
the events than I could. So, for the purposes of this discourse I will
only touch on the highlights.
I found it especially touching to witness Sally Schneider express her
appreciation while presenting her husband Denny, (Denny's Food Pride), a
participation award from GHS Experience Based Career Education Program.
Both Denny and Sally have given much to our Community over the years.
I found it heart warming to hear Renae Fayette call Zebbie (DeSautel)
Hankey to the podium to accept the Teacher of the year award. The world
would be a better placed if it was full of educators the likes of
Zebbie.
This years "Boss of the Year" award went to a well deserved individual.
One only needs to enter the recipients place of business and the feeling
of pride and attention to detail resonates throughout the entire
establishment. Employees of the business all present themselves with a
dignity and eagerness to serve that leaves one with the knowledge that
excellence isn't just simply a word at Grafton's Squire Shop. It IS the
way they do business.
I would like to extend a most heartfelt congratulations to Rita Amiot,
this years "Boss of the Year".
It's easy for me to get a "little" emotional when I see good people,
doing good things receiving recognition for their efforts. However, when
John Fox called Rita back up to the podium to present the "Citizen of
the Year" award, I started swallowing a lump that just wouldn't stay
down. Rita started her presentation with a list of accomplishments this
years "Citizen of the Year" has achieved. She listed several
organizations this years recipient participates in as well as a long
list of volunteer activities throughout the community and the area.
Of course, from the very beginning, I recognized the individual she was
speaking of. Certainly, over the years I have been well aware of the
numerous significant contributions this years "Citizen of the Year" has
provided.
HOWEVER, when Rita finish reading off a long list of accomplishments
and said. The Grafton Area Chamber of Commerce 2007 "Citizen of the
Year" is
A. K. (Andrew) Moe. I experienced a feeling of pride that I previously
only thought possible in dreams. I found myself thanking God, and,....
the community in which I live.
As I watched my "little" (pardon the pun) brother walk toward to stag,
one of my thoughts was -- "If only his Father and Mother could see him
now".
CONGRATULATIONS A. K. You have served Grafton Floral, your fellow man
and your community well. Making me and your entire gene pool very proud.

We received a trace of snowcat dust yesterday. It started snowing
a little before noon and quit by late afternoon. By Monday morning, most

Speaking of diamonds. I am pleased to report that the worlds
largest diamond (or close to it) will light up a good portion of
Leistikow Park once again this holiday season.Thanks to the efforts of
Golden Harvest Jewelry.

Early Sunday afternoon I did some shopping at the Alco and Pamida
stores on the West side of Grafton. I talked with one couple that
commented how wonderful it was to hear Christmas music again. Then, the
lady said, "but it's way to early to start celebrating Christmas. It
isn't even Thanksgiving, for God's sake." As I watched them walk away, I
couldn't help being a tad confused.... Their shopping cart was "plump
full" of Christmas presents.
Personally, I believe we should be celebrating "Christmas" all
year 'round.

Last week truly was an interesting one, for me. It also
proved to be another of lifes learning experiences. I learned, among
other things, it's much easier to whistle thru your teeth,... if you
have teeth. I must also admit that I am a bit concerned that buy the
time I, eventually do leave the dentist office I may not be able to
afford the proverbial "pot-to-P-in". Speaking of which, wouldn't you
know it. The "Throne" in our home library sprung a leak Sunday. Now that
too, will need to be replaced. Hence, for awhile at least, I won't even
have "a pot-to-think-on", if you know what I mean.
I also learned there are numerous members of the Gazette family
willing to share various forms of solace and consolation. For instance;
---- "Well, Gary, that whole scene would be worth a Norman Rockwell
painting of it!",or, "Take heart in knowing you aren't alone in
taking a header. I made mine in front of a tourist filled carriage."
One of my morning breakfast friends thought this would cheer
me up, -- "I hear they serve good oatmeal at Grannies. You might be able
to gum some." another note mentioned, "This aging process is not for the
faint hearted and sometimes not much fun." Then too, a long time friend
said, "You might have to have an extra helping of lutefisk instead of
turkey for thanksgiving this year. Boil it long enough and you should be
able to suck it through a straw. Then, direct from the Mayors office, I
received --- Well Gary it seems you're taking that old song to heart...
"All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth." Hope all goes well for
you on the 26th.
I even had one well wisher stop by the house to give me a
stout very brightly painted cane. I suspect with the idea that it would
be easier for me to see and not forget. Thanks a million John. I will
not only cherish the thought, I'll cherish the cane forever as well.
Okay, I'll admit I did take many, if not most, of the previous
"comments" out of context. I will never take lightly the compassion and
thoughtfulness of the many members of "our" Shivercity Gazette family.
AND, so that there is no misunderstanding. I am fine, I am doing
well,... and, eventually I hope to be able to gnaw the meat off the bone
of one of those giant, tender and juicy County Smokehouse T-bone steaks.

When I sent out last Friday's Gazette I fully intended on sending
the next one out on the following Monday. Some may have already noticed,
that didn't happen.
The rest of the story, at least the Readers Digest Version of it.
Sunday night I became aware of the need (request) to make a quick trip
to Arnesen's Rocky Point Resort. My plan was to stop at Granny's in the
morning (as Usual) and then head out to Rocky Point. Monday morning
started out as planned. The weather forecast for the day was great
(above normaI) and, even the dice box at Granny's tipped in my favor.
As I left town I thought how wonderful this fall had been. I
thought of the numerous trips I have made to Rocky Point over the years.
As always, I wondered what I would find changed since my last visit.
The weatherman was right, it truly was a beautiful fall day.
Driving even slower than normal I wondered how Casey was doing as I past
his farm west of Stephen. Next came Myron Larson's field bringing back
even more memories. I noticed some farmsteads were starting to disappear
although I was, somehow, pleased to see that Orvin and Eileens Knutson's
(Elly's mom & dad) farmstead was still intact. I past several Field Bros
fields remembering the wonderful working relationship I enjoyed with
Chuck and John Field and their families.
Continuing east I could see that Pete Sinclairs land was winter
ready as was that of Jeff Nelson as I 'rounded' the curve. I always slow
down going by Alfred and John Jensen's farm and can't help remembering
how graciously they always received me. Next came the Halfmann farm and
ag equipment operation. Both Paul & Craig were invaluable resources for
me. I thought of Wayne Carlson and wondered what he's doing now. Then,
as I continued on my way to Arnesen's, I looked off to the west and
thought of Luther and Carol Johnson. Luther was one of "my" beet growers
and Carol was Ag Secretary at Drayton for many years.
As I turned west on hiway 11 I thought of the Bogestad boys, Roger
& Larry and the many "interesting" times I shared with them. Within a
few miles I was out of the beet growing area and once again I started
thinking of the possible changes I might find at Rocky Point.
As I past thru Warroad I contemplated stopping for dinner. Then
again, maybe I should wait and eat something on my way home instead. (I
thought)
Somewhere about here, (I think) is the beginning of some of the
reason I haven't sent out the Gazette.
Anyway, As I turned off 11 unto hiway 12 I "thought" I felt a bit
dizzy, although it went away within a few miles. Everything seemed to be
okay until I turned into Arnesen's Resort. I seemed to feel a little
week. So,... with absolutely no rational excuse, when I got out of the
car to take care of the "business" that brought me there. Unfortunately
I did so without the benefit of my cane. The next thing I knew, I was
sprawled out on the ground with some of my front teeth hiding under a
pile of tree leaves.
I don't remember anything hurting, much, save maybe a sore neck a
stiff back and of course my badly bruised pride. Needless to say, I
returned to the car, and, while calling it several terms unfit for
print, crabbed my cane, finished my errand and started for home.
As I turned unto hiway 11 heading west, it might go without saying
that I wasn't the happiest camper on the Minnesota Hiways in the first
place. Then,... as I was looking in my rear view mirror I noticed what,
at first glance, I thought was a 1949 Mercury - without a grill - racing
up behind me. Rats,... it wasn't a car at all. It was me in that rear
view mirror,.... without front teeth.
I've been told I may be able to get them fixed on the 26th of this
month in this same year. And, if there anyone out there that thinks I'm
afraid of needles. You ain't seen nothin til you've seen me around a
dentist.
Now then, having said all that. If it weren't for the many notes
and calls wondering where the ---- I am, it is almost a certainty I
would still be hiding out somewhere feeling sore, and, sorry for myself.
As I have said so many times before. "It is not only my need to do
the Gazette, that keeps me going. It is the folks that read it that give
me the will and determination." Or so it seems to me.

Speaking of "things" happening. Wednesday Bruce and Kristy stopped
by and installed a wonderfully thick, warm blanket of insulation in our
attic. It's something we should have done a long time ago. However for
some crazy reason I continued to putt it off. With the price of "energy"
what it is today, and, especially what it will be in the future. "You
must have bats in your belfry, if you don't put more insulation in your
attic."
Give Bruce a call, Kristy wants him to keep working.

week. So,... with absolutely no rational excuse, when I got out of the
car to take care of the "business" that brought me there. Unfortunately
I did so without the benefit of my cane. The next thing I knew, I was
sprawled out on the ground with some of my front teeth hiding under a
pile of tree leaves.
I don't remember anything hurting, much, save maybe a sore neck a
stiff back and of course my badly bruised pride. Needless to say, I
returned to the car, and, while calling it several terms unfit for
print, crabbed my cane, finished my errand and started for home.
As I turned unto hiway 11 heading west, it might go without saying
that I wasn't the happiest camper on the Minnesota Hiways in the first
place. Then,... as I was looking in my rear view mirror I noticed what,
at first glance, I thought was a 1949 Mercury - without a grill - racing
up behind me. Rats,... it wasn't a car at all. It was me in that rear
view mirror,.... without front teeth.
I've been told I may be able to get them fixed on the 26th of this
month in this same year. And, if there anyone out there that thinks I'm
afraid of needles. You ain't seen nothin til you've seen me around a
dentist.
Now then, having said all that. If it weren't for the many notes
and calls wondering where the ---- I am, it is almost a certainty I
would still be hiding out somewhere feeling sore, and, sorry for myself.
As I have said so many times before. "It is not only my need to do
the Gazette, that keeps me going. It is the folks that read it that give
me the will and determination." Or so it seems to me.

Speaking of "things" happening. Wednesday Bruce and Kristy stopped
by and installed a wonderfully thick, warm blanket of insulation in our
attic. It's something we should have done a long time ago. However for
some crazy reason I continued to putt it off. With the price of "energy"
what it is today, and, especially what it will be in the future. "You
must have bats in your belfry, if you don't put more insulation in your
attic."

I write regarding a few recent Gazette items.
We will have all the downtown pavers fixed by next Summerfest. It's
a shame they deteriorated so quickly, but they will be fixed.
In regard to the Utility Rebate, I've heardsome question this,
and it just reminds me that we in ND are stoic folks who are suspicious
about getting something for nothing. The ultimate truth is that this is
the people's money, not the government's and it is the right time to
give it back asthe purpose for which it was collectedhas been
paid.I hope every dime gets spent in Grafton and I hope we have a
great Christmas shopping season.
As for Alchem, they are keeping 4 people on staff all winter. I
would suggest that a permanent closing of the plant would eliminate the
need to keep anyone working so I see that as a positive sign. Of course,
it's a business decision that will be made far from Grafton and as with
most things, I have no control over them regardless of my role as Mayor.

the field to storage piles, and from storage piles to the factories
requires a significant amount of equipment and personal. It's not
unusual, especially during times of limited labor supply, to find
equipment parked due to a shortage of labor.
While attending a Dale Carnegie course several years ago, I learned
that I would be more successful, talking about those topics I understood
best. Believe me Dave, I fully understand the ramifications of not
having enough trucks to keep the factories operating efficiently.
So,... if there is anyone out there interested in driving a Transystems
semi hauling sugarbeets to the five factories in the Red River Valley.

Over the years Grafton has enjoyed several "first's". Grafton was the
first community in the state to own and operate it's very own power and
light plant. Grafton was the first community in the state to establish a
free public library. It was also one of the first in the state to get a
Carnegie Library. So, "new things" aren't exactly new to Grafton.
The latest edition of the Walsh County Record contains another "first"
for our area. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time I have
seen a advertisement in our local paper, written completely in Spanish.
A half page advertisement paid for by Transystems Inc. They're looking
for drivers to operate their beet hauling semis throughout the Red River
Valley. Now I can't read Spanish, heck I have enough trouble reading
English. Anyway, if anyone knows anybody that can read Spanish, and,
their looking for work. Tell them to read Transystems Ad in the latest
Walsh County Record.
ALSO, If the latest rumor is correct, and I think it is. Grafton may
well be the first community in the state to have a parking lot covered
with artificial turf. As I understand it, there is a man named "Gunner"
who will supply the grass (turf grass) and, then a guy named John will
be providing the parking lot,.... among other things. Unfortunately, if
the rumor is correct - and I am pretty sure it is - a fellow named Larry
will lose his favorite parking spot.

Mike Kilmer's Hagen Construction Company has been busy this fall. From
dismantling homes like the Robertson/LaBerge place, to demolishing a
large barn on the Daniel Kouba farm, to loading out corn from the giant
corn pile east of the Curling club, to digging in the water and fluid
handling systems for the railroad companies new office and locomotive
engine facility on the north end of town.

It looks to me like the sheet iron on the new giant grain storage bin
by the Peavey elevator is about half installed.
------------------------
It's hard to believe that it was just 60 years ago (according to the
Record) that left halfback Gene Burns scored the decisive touchdown
giving Grafton a win over Park River 7-0 in the homecoming game.

Still no word on Alchem's status, although the word is they are
shipping all their corn out of town. If that is so, the prognosis can't
be a good one.

We went down and paid our utility bill yesterday and received our
"quota" of GROW GRAFTON bucks. I was hoping it would be enough to fill
the cruiser with gas. Unfortunately, while we were in paying our utility
bill, the price of "Texas Tea" went up another dime. Which in turn
means,.... it's now gonna cost $3.10 to drive the cruiser-with-a-couch
to Minto.
So,... like the wonderful folks at KXPO Radio say. I'm going to do my
very best to do my shopping, "right here at home".

myself, could be accused of being a tad biased. And of course we are.
Then again that doesn't change the facts,.... Right?

Only in a small town in America can you go down to city hall to pay
your utility bill and get half of it back in "community bucks".
Actually,.. I'm not even sure that many, if any, small towns have given
back money in any form, once they have control of it. In any event, I am
pleased that the Grafton city leadership has decided to do so in this
instance. I suspect there are as many reasons for, or against the
program as there are folks getting the refund. As is always the case
with "such things". I'll go on record as agreeing with the decision.
There is little question the additional monetary influx will have a
positive impact on the Grafton business community. That, in turn, will
have significant impact on every citizen living in the community as
well.
Or so it seems to me.

Local news isn't, just, local any more. The Country Smokehouse story in
Monday's edition of the Grand Forks Herald not only went into thousands
of homes in the Red River Valley. It was probably read by as many folks,
or more, across the entire country. I've received several notes in the
last couple days indicating they keep up with the Valley's news by
reading the Herald via the internet. Notes like the following from
Darcie. She wrote. >>>

I too enjoyed reading the article on Dave and Kelly in the online
version of the GF Herald - it was great to see a picture of them as well
as I haven't seen them in years - since my babysitting days out on their
farm!! Reading the article reminded me of going to Gillespie's meat

bacon and we'dtake it home and slice it on our very own meat
cutter!I don't remember much but being very small standing in
front of the giant counter andthatdistinct "smell" that the meat
market always had. I think they also had a little candy machine that
I used to frequent. The article brings backfond memories and it
sure is fun to see Grafton Growing!!

Sugar factory in Drayton. He too, always seemed to do more than was
expected of him. Aren't memories wonderful?

How much sugar do Americans really eat?
Not as much as reported. Using information from a 2001 report as
illustration, a general statement like "Americans consume more than 150
pounds of sugar in a year" is not only thoroughly misleading, it is
completely wrong. Such false assertions perpetuate the myth that
"Americans eat too much sugar." The fact is the average American
consumes no more than 1.6 ounces of sugar per day or less than 40 lbs.

supply numbers as nutrition fact is as fictitious as equating gross
salary [total available supply] and take-home pay [human consumption].
Besides misrepresenting economic supply numbers as human intake, there
is a second factual error in this news release. This error is using the
word sugar to represent all sweeteners.
Sugar is only one component of the total sweetener supply. When
tabulated by ERS, total caloric sweeteners include all the corn syrups +
honey products + miscellaneous edible syrups, like sorghum, as well as
sugar. Total caloric sweeteners is cumbersome to say or write
repeatedly, thus the term sugars was adopted for convenience [note the s
on sugars]. Although the term sugars was coined to represent all caloric
sweeteners, some continue to write and talk about sugar [pure sucrose
from sugar cane and sugar beets] instead of sugars. This is more than
semantics. Continued misrepresentation of total caloric sweeteners
[sugars] as sugar [no s] is not only flawed but damages America's

Besides misrepresenting economic supply numbers as human intake, there
is a second factual error in this news release. This error is using the
word sugar to represent all sweeteners.
Sugar is only one component of the total sweetener supply. When
tabulated by ERS, total caloric sweeteners include all the corn syrups +
honey products + miscellaneous edible syrups, like sorghum, as well as
sugar. Total caloric sweeteners is cumbersome to say or write
repeatedly, thus the term sugars was adopted for convenience [note the s
on sugars]. Although the term sugars was coined to represent all caloric
sweeteners, some continue to write and talk about sugar [pure sucrose
from sugar cane and sugar beets] instead of sugars. This is more than
semantics. Continued misrepresentation of total caloric sweeteners
[sugars] as sugar [no s] is not only flawed but damages America's
hardworking farmers and the stability they bring to their local
economies.

I must admit I was more than pleasantly surprised to open up the Grand
Forks Heralds Business section Monday and see the words, Smoke & Weiners
in bold print. Page one of that edition also featured a picture of our
daughter Kelly and her husband David as well as a even larger picture of
Mike Misialek hanging up a string of Country Smokehouse Sausage.
I was also pleased with the manner in which the article was written by
Grand Forks Herald staff writer Ryan Schuster. Of course I'm a bit
biased, that's for certain. However, I was able to feel the "interest in
the topic" in Ryan's story.
I am also pleased that the Grand Forks Herald has recently increased
it's interested in the Grafton Business community.
As I read Ryan's article I struggled to keep my eyes from wandering
toward the picture of my oldest daughter and her husband. I found myself
having to start reading the article over again, because of it.
Several things in the article caught my attention. For example; the
small shop carries a wide variety of "specialty" meats and seafoods that
has made the store a popular place for locals. That they strive to greet
their customers by name. I also appreciated the comments from loyal
customers like Liz and Les Aasand saying, "They have such a great
selection of everything, it's always fresh, the price is right. It's a
small place you walk in and everything is there."
The comments from life long family friend Patti (Watkins) French hit me
especially close to home. She mentioned that shopping at Graftons
Country Smokehouse reminds her of her father, who was a meat cutter and
he also smoked his own meat. Patti also mentioned the shop reminds her
of Gillespies Meat Market. (A well known butcher shop in Grafton for
many many years.)
I too, have caught myself walking into Country Smokehouse reminiscing
about the Gillespie's, and, somehow knowing that they, both Butch Sr.
and Jr., would most certainly approve of The Country Smokehouse,
Grafton's newest meat shop. The article concludes on page 2 of the
business section along with a picture of Gary Hajicek trimming pork in
the back room.
I am amazed how many people have commented on the Smokehouse article
featured in the Herald. For example.

At one time the skin from sturgeons was made into the laces used in
joining leather belting together in machinery.

The current temperature is 34°.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 39/28

It started raining around noon Sunday and by the time it quit we
received .22".
The weather wizards are telling us we could have wind gusts as high as
50 MPH today. However, there is a 70% chance it won't snow,..... today.

One of the two large grain storage bins being erected in town, (the
south one) is starting to "look" like it's done. Of course there's a lot
left to do including much of the electrical work.

When properly prepared, brick pavers (cobblestones) truly are
attractive and functional. Unfortunately the "cobblestone" strips along
the curb in the downtown area were not.
Cobblestones and trees were added to Grafton's main street facade when
the new main street was constructed a few years ago. Almost from the
beginning, the poorly laid pavers have been a problem. Several feet had
to be redone within a few weeks, even more within a few months and there
are still many areas that need to be removed and reset properly.
Wayne Coulthart spent a good share of this past weekend on his knees in
front of his main street establishment, Wayne's Heating and Cooling,
"fixing" the cobblestones he has been assessed for, and paying taxes on.
Uneven cobblestones are not only unsightly, they are extremely
difficult to remove snow and ice from, which in turn, increases the
chances of accidents.

Although it could be a bit early Kristy, so far I haven't heard from a
single Swede. At least one that can read,..... Swedish. We may have to
ask a Norwegian to help translate those documents. I know one who
professes to know "almost" everything.

We haven't had much luck hearing from anyone with film or video's of
our early era youth hockey program either. It's only a guess of course,
but maybe many of those parents were so preoccupied telling the coaches
how, and, how often they should be playing their sons, they just didn't
have time to run the camera. It could happen,..... it's happened before.

The former W.W. Robertson house on the corner of 7th and Western is
still generating information. Aunt Alice shared the following: >>>

house) Dan and I moved upstairs in

was the year we were married, We
moved out sometime in the spring of

lived in the house. It was a little strange to see how quickly that
house was
torn down, as I was able to watch it
from our home on the corner of 7th
and McHugh. Alice Lessard. Keep

American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis could be a good resource.

come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of
this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and
requires no installation. TEST IT..... It will go off from most
everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery
runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain.
It works if you park in your driveway or garage If your car alarm
goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the
burglar or rapist won't stick around... after a few seconds all the
neighbors will be looking out their windows to
see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that.
And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a
parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there.....
This is something that should really be shared with everyone.
Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime. <<<

For all intent and purposes, the parking lot at St. John's Catholic
Church is finished,.... for this year anyway.

If one takes the time to look, one will find there is always something
new happening in Grafton.
This morning for instance. As I drove past the former West View School
I was more than a little surprised to see there was a "realestate for
sale" sign planted in the grounds on the West side of the building. That
set me back a bit and then I noticed not far from that sign, was one
that read, "apartment for rent".
Either there is something going on there that no-one has heard about.
Or, the "little tykes" out trick or treat'n last night had some older
siblings doing some trick'n on their own.

The other day I mentioned that the Hagen Construction crew was taking
down the house built by W.W. Robertson. I referred to that home as
being one I associated as the Jack Bannerman home. For the purposes of
clarification. I was never actually aware who officially "owned" the
home. However, because I knew Jack lived there I called it "his home".
Much like we always called our kids bedrooms "theirs" even though in
reality they really didn't own "their" bed room at all.
Anyway, That being said. The mention of the wonderful old structure
gave two individuals reason to write.

was sold to Roger Stark and subsequently to Ray Charlton, Jr.
Although I have heard of Ray's plans for the property I wouldn't pass it
along as it is only a rumour. My parents lived in that house before
they bought the house on Kittson in 1936 and my oldest sister and
brother lived there along withmy parents, of course. I do
remember Alice and Danny living there in the upstairs apartment I think,
and also Fred and Alvina Lessard (Maurice and Frederick's parents).
That's going back a ways but I am sure you will have some readers who
will remember and are related to them. There was a gentleman who
lived in the downstairs apartment for many years called Mr. Major. I
never knew his first name.

Rumor has it the folks piling corn in Ted Hoffman's Trailer City found
some additional storage room that they hadn't planned on. Those of you
that remember Trailer City, might remember there was a well, somewhere
between the river and the old wash house. It sounds like the boys that
have been piling corn there lately can tell us exactly where that well
is. And, maybe, they can even tell us how much corn that old well can
hold.
If memory serves me correctly. The east edge of the present pile is
just about where Cy & Madaline Croaker's trailer house was parked.

receive many without any such designation at all.

certain that it does remain confidential. However, with the Gazettes
primary intent of caring and sharing in mind. I receive numerous notes
thanking me for sharing the thoughts and feelings of others.
I've found that by sharing others feelings with the group, the message
often gives others reason to share.
To that end I would like to share Berts note with the group. He wrote.

If in that endeavor, others find a thread of solace I am thrilled. The
actual fact is, the Gazette is not mine. Without the input and
participation of "our" members it would most certainly fail. I hope
everyone can find that very special meaning in Berts message. "It is
addressed to me, that's true. However, it applies to all of you."
That my friends, is why I continually say. "Thanks a million for caring

The turnout of tiny ghost and goblins was a bit less than normal at our
house this year (a bit short of a hundred). Although they are all fun
and interesting to watch walking up the driveway. I get a wonderfully
warm feeling each time the really little tykes knock on the door. It's
even more gratifying when they look up with their youthful smile and say
"thank you" then scurry off to the folks next door. It is also wonderful
knowing that now, for the most part at least, one or both parents
accompany their tiny tricksters around the neighborhood.
Halloween is a wonderful reason for "Trick & Treat". The "trick" is to
get families together to enjoy it.
The "treat"...... is when they actually do.
Or so it seems to me.
