HAPPY BIRTHDAY RYKER VOTAVA !!
Today, Toni & Andy Votava became the proud parents of a wonderful baby
boy.
Ryker Thomas Votava weighed in at 10 pounds 2 ounces. He stands a full
21 inches tall,.... And, as I understand it, immediately after receiving
his very first spanking, Ryker began practicing to be a farmer. Just
like his grandpa Tom.
I'll have to put another seat in the walleye combine for my newest
great-grandson.
Congratulations Toni and Andy on the birth of beautiful "little" baby
boy Ryker.

Sometimes, somethings aren't, always, what they appear to be.
Take for instance the Grafton True Value advertisement in the last
Walsh County Record. Reading it, one "might" assume the reference to a
"liquidation sale", might suggest that the True Value Store is going out
of business. Of course,... that is certainly NOT TRUE.
It is true (pardon the pun) that Grafton's True Value Store is
"liquidating" some items from their inventory. That, I assume, refers to
some items none of us really wanted anyway.
So then,... that's the answer for those folks wondering why the Grafton
True Value Hardware Store is refurbishing the front of their store at
the same time they are holding a liquidation sale.
If you haven't had a chance to visit a real honest to goodness old
fashion, get just about, anything you could ever need, hardware store.
Stop by Grafton's True Value Hardware Store and check it out. And, if
you should get a chance, thank Kerry & Carole Demars for investing their
heart and sole in the future of our little community and the surrounding
area.

Yesterdays mention of the park, the flag and the former Reyleck's
store, gave Kathee Carlson reason to share the following. Kathee wrote:

the first planted flag was installed in the park so that would have been
between 1968 and 1973. Does that sound right to you? It was always fun
when the park workers came in to discuss what to plant, how to plant,

I go home, part of the tour I take is through the park.
I am pleased too that the old Reyleck's building is being preserved to
function well in its current capacity. That is another pass-by, if not a
stop, on the tour of Grafton. I think my grandfather Axel Carlson might
stop by on occasion to haunt the southwest corner of the building where
the shoe department used to be, but my dad, well he could haunt the
office area, but he would rather be at the golf course!

hardly imagine the magnitude of a reunion of all the former employees of

Wagonmaster hamburgers. If, by chance, your coming to town to visit the
park or participate in True Values "Liquidation" sale anyway. Stop by
the Westside Drive Inn and have a Wagonmaster. If your into chicken,
Westsides chicken is a full five star general.

I asked (him or her) to put my name on the list. Enjoyed our short

into a long dissertation about the "motel" business but they are really
"milking" this pipeline situation. Can you believe, a room at Leonard
has been around $45-50 a night and we have always had a standing
reservation with our credit card on file to verify. This trip -
$70.00!!! yes, per night. Friends (also my age group) payed over $125
per night at AmericInn and they travel to Fla. and stay at the better
motels and have NEVER payed anything like that. Oh well, I guess it
was worth it since we really enjoyed our days there.
Do you remember dad, Rilie R. Morgan? He took care of the Masonic
grounds (east of PO on 5th) and his plantings were of the Masonic
emblem. Beautiful. He and mom often took us for rides thru
Leistikow to see the beautiful peonies, their favorite flowers for
outside. Our home at 938 Hill was surrounded with peonies and the
"rock garden" made by us kids, Jack, Ray, Jeanette, Mary and I is still
there! I believe there is a church on that corner now and was an
apothecary prior to that.
Gary, thank you again. I will look forward to your next email
with highlights of GRAFTON and updates on our beautiful city. I
couldn't have grown up in a better town!!

It's been awhile since the last Gazette. For the most part some of that
time was spent as a self appointed weather observer (sometimes adverse)
and part of the time I participated in a self appointed walleye and
small fish feeding program.
Now then, even though "the catching" hasn't been the absolute best I've
ever experienced, the fishing experience out of Arnesen's Rocky Point
Resort continues to be just as fantastic as ever, or better.
Saturday our grandson Tyler, with a bit of help from his uncle Mike,
caught a 26 inch walleye. The next day, Pat dragged one in that measured
26 and three quarter.

One of the first things I noticed when we got back to town was the work
being done on Simonson's new Subway Sandwich Station on the corner of
Hill Avenue and hiway 17. Although there is still a lot of work to do
before the grand opening, it won't be long and we'll be able to eat a
Sub while looking up & down both major hiways in town.
------------------------
Grafton's True Value Hardware Store is getting a brand new front facade
as well. The giant front windows that once gave us insight to the
fabulous fashions featured by the Reylecks clothing store, and later,
the folks that worked at True Value are being replaced by smaller, more
energy efficient ones. And, I was pleased to see that the new windows
are MARVINS WINDOWS, made right here in Grafton North Dakota.

The B & D Flooring and Carpet Cleaning Store is also getting a new face
lift. The front and west side of the building that Bill Meier built for
his Grafton Glass & Paint business will be refurbished giving our son
and daughter-in-law Brad and Denise's store a brand new look.
It's heartwarming to see the business community reinvesting in the
future of the community in which I live.

Speaking of heartwarming. Pat and I drove through Leistikow Park this
morning, and, as always I thought of my dad. I remember how he would
stand out in the park with members of the park board waving his cane at
various trees shrubs and flower beds. I remembered the time he actually
bought a specific tractor just because he believed it was the best way
to prepare and plant the area south of the swimming pool.
As I looked at the pool this morning, I couldn't help but remember Hugo
Kutz and all of the things he done for the pool, and the community, over
the years. Hugo taught me how to "patch" a high pressure water pipe with
strips from a tractor inner tube.
As we continued thru the park, I slowed a bit, to remember and
appreciate Earl and all the things he contributed to make our drive thru
the park an enjoyable one.
Then, I noticed that some of the blacktop has been removed from several
different areas throughout the park. That, I suspect, is in preparation
for the preposed new blacktop mat to be laid down in the next few weeks.
The posts bordering the drive thru the park always remind me of my good
friend and former mentor Milton Johnston. It was Milton that originally
orchestrated the method of rounding off the posts so that they would
shed water and not rot away prematurely.
HOWEVER, the really, truly, heartwarming part of my most recent trip
through Leistikow wasn't the parks beautiful grass and trees. It wasn't
the pool or the new Frisbee course. It wasn't even the fantastic
campgrounds. (with special thanks to our friends from the pipeline) The
real heartwarming part of todays spin thru the park, was when I reached
"Milton's American Flag" in flowers.
Having a floral flag in the park had been a desire of Milton Johnston's
for a number of years. One I am pleased to say, he eventually did see
accomplished. Unfortunately, for some reason, the floral flag was
omitted from the parks flower bed plantings of the past several years.
It certainly was HEARTWARMING to see it return.
Aren't memories wonderful?

Trucks and equipment from Strata Corporation are hauling the all the
dirt from three street projects into the area often referred to as the
States School Slough south of the Leistikow Park. Filling in the slough
will not only improve the overall look of the area, it will eliminate
some real serious skeeter breeding grounds as well.

Speaking of Leistikow Park. The staff responsible for it's day to day
care and maintenance are to be commended for the fantastic work they do.
Grafton can be very proud of it's Park & Rec facilities and the programs
they offer the Grafton area.
I invite everyone to take a leisurely drive through Leistikow Park and
experience the tranquil, calming, effect it can have.

Rumor has it that more and more people every day are finding the Daily
Grind, just off main on east 5th street is a fantastic place for a
coffee break and a lunch.

everyone will motor to Minto for their Quasquicetennial Celebration
Cookout.
Burgers, brats, chips, pop and ice cream sundaes will be served on the
Main Street in Minto from 5 to 9. I guarantee you won't find better
burgers and brats anywhere in the world.
Proceeds from the FREE WILL offering will be used to defer celebration
expenses.

Graftons Heritage Village is open Sundays from 1 to 4 to tour the
buildings and grounds. Vintage Merry-go-round rides are also available.
Graftons Heritage village is fortunate to have one of the country's few
remaining "authentic" merry-go-rounds in existence.
Heritage Village will also be participating in Graftons SummerFest and
will be offering the following lunch menu after the parade.
Saturday June 28th from 11am til 1pm
Music will be provided by Brent Hermans—Piano Talk—from 12noon til
1pm
Serving:
Roast Turkey on a Bun, Macaroni Salad, Chips, Ice Cream, Lemonade and
Coffee all for only $7.00.
On the lighter side:
BBQ, Chips, Ice Cream and Lemonade all for only $4.00.
All proceeds will go toward the operation of Graftons Heritage village.

I understand most of the final preparations for this years celebration
have been completed. Members of every age group should find this years
celebration fun and entertaining.
Events like SummerFest require significant effort and input of many
people to make them successful. Everyone in the business community is
not only asked, but to a certain degree required, to contribute and
participate if such undertakings are to come to fruitfull fruition.
To that end I often find myself wondering. Why, I wonder, isn't
businesses like Wal-Mart, Target, Menards, Loews, Old Navy and the
Columbia Mall among others, listed in the credits along with our "local"
merchants? Certainly, in my mind at least, they have gained as much, or
more, from the folks that will enjoy Grafton's SummerFest Celebration
than the local merchants that inevitably end up "footing the bill".
Everytime I drive through our local merchants parking lots, I am truly
amazed at the number of vehicles that have been purchased from a small
town dealership along the Red River. I often wonder, how much that
business contributes to, and participates in, the success of the
community in which I live.
"Small town celebrations are a lot more fun, when there is still people
left in them,.... to celebrate.
Or so it seems to me.

Some may have noticed that the Gazette has been printed with invisible
ink for the past few weeks. During that time I have been experiencing
all of the sights, sounds and weather conditions mother nature has been
able to muster.
Fishing out of Rocky Point, as always, has been absolutely
fantastic..... catching on the other hand, ran the entire gamut. The old
Walleye Combine didn't seem to have any trouble finding fish. However,..
it's operator (me) couldn't seem to coax many of the wily walleye's to
take the bait as often as I would like. Fortunately, for me anyway, the
walleye and steak at Rock Harbor Lodge are all much easier to come by
and are cooked to perfection.

There doesn't seem to be much activity around the new Subway Sandwich
store. Everything looks about like it did before I went walleye hunting.
------------------------
The Extra End Patio project appears to be up and running with a bright
new white fence surrounding a sea of astro turf and patio tables.

I notice Country Realty has sold a few more houses while I was gone. It
still looks like the best way to sell a house in town, is have the folks
from the Country do it.

Speaking of houses. Delhart and Judith Nygard, along with having one of
the nicest looking lawns in town, also has one of the prettiest
"roofers" in town as well.
Evidently, when Alysia Osowski isn't busy working with Troy at
Granny's, she helps him shingle roofs.

It sure is great to see the Leistikow Park Camp Ground full. Without
question It will have a significant economic impact on our little
community and the entire area.

Pat and I stopped at the Country Smokehouse and picked up a couple
books of "RAFFLE TICKETS" good for over $2000 dollars in prizes. You can
purchase individual tickets for $5 each, or a book of five tickets for
only $20.
It's a super way to participate in the activities and festivities of
Graftons annual Summerfest Celebration.

Stan Pascke and his lovely wife Emmy will be in town Wednesday the 25.
Most of the "older" hockey players and fans will remember Stan. Although
Stan has been retired for quite some time know, he still remains current
on regional hockey and sports events.
For us "fisherpersons", Stan and Emmy still produce some of the best
"Wa-Pa" fishing spinners on the market. Stan once told me that every
single spinner he sells is absolutely guaranteed to catch something. If
not a fish,... a fisherman.

been trying to decide on just the right property to settle on. You might

The Schumacher's are celebrating the 75th anniversary of their family
business.
For three quarters of a century Schumacher & Sons has played a
significant role in the business community of Grafton.
Over the years members of the Schumacher family have contributed untold
hours and resources to numerous projects and organizations around the
area.
A park on the south end of town has been named Schumacher Park,
honoring Buster for his life long contributions to the city of Grafton.
Buster and Helen Schumacher will always share a very special place in
the hearts of our family for helping us during a a time when even hope
seemed so difficult for us to reach.
To this day, David and Linda, and their organization, continues to
carry on the "Schumacher tradition" of carring for the needs of the
people the area.
Pat and I would like to extend our most heartfelt congratulations to
Dave and Linda Schumacher, and the entire Schumacher & Sons organization
for 75 years of caring and sharing.
You have made our little town a much better place to live.

Some may have noticed that the Gazette has been printed with invisible
ink for the past few weeks. During that time I have been experiencing
all of the sights, sounds and weather conditions mother nature has been
able to muster.
Fishing out of Rocky Point, as always, has been absolutely
fantastic..... catching on the other hand, ran the entire gamut. The old
Walleye Combine didn't seem to have any trouble finding fish. However,..
it's operator (me) couldn't seem to coax many of the wily walleye's to
take the bait as often as I would like. Fortunately, for me anyway, the
walleye and steak at Rock Harbor Lodge are all much easier to come by
and are cooked to perfection.

There doesn't seem to be much activity around the new Subway Sandwich
store. Everything looks about like it did before I went walleye hunting.

The Extra End Patio project appears to be up and running with a bright
new white fence surrounding a sea of astro turf and patio tables.

I notice Country Realty has sold a few more houses while I was gone. It
still looks like the best way to sell a house in town, is have the folks
from the Country do it.

Speaking of houses. Delhart and Judith Nygard, along with having one of
the nicest looking lawns in town, also has one of the prettiest
"roofers" in town as well.
Evidently, when Alysia Osowski isn't busy working with Troy at
Granny's, she helps him shingle roofs.

It sure is great to see the Leistikow Park Camp Ground full. Without
question It will have a significant economic impact on our little
community and the entire area.

Pat and I stopped at the Country Smokehouse and picked up a couple
books of "RAFFLE TICKETS" good for over $2000 dollars in prizes. You can
purchase individual tickets for $5 each, or a book of five tickets for
only $20.
It's a super way to participate in the activities and festivities of
Graftons annual Summerfest Celebration.

Stan Pascke and his lovely wife Emmy will be in town Wednesday the 25.
Most of the "older" hockey players and fans will remember Stan. Although
Stan has been retired for quite some time know, he still remains current
on regional hockey and sports events.
For us "fisherpersons", Stan and Emmy still produce some of the best
"Wa-Pa" fishing spinners on the market. Stan once told me that every
single spinner he sells is absolutely guaranteed to catch something. If
not a fish,... a fisherman.

The Schumacher's are celebrating the 75th anniversary of their family
business.
For three quarters of a century Schumacher & Sons has played a
significant role in the business community of Grafton.
Over the years members of the Schumacher family have contributed untold
hours and resources to numerous projects and organizations around the
area.
A park on the south end of town has been named Schumacher Park,
honoring Buster for his life long contributions to the city of Grafton.
Buster and Helen Schumacher will always share a very special place in
the hearts of our family for helping us during a a time when even hope
seemed so difficult for us to reach.
To this day, David and Linda, and their organization, continues to
carry on the "Schumacher tradition" of carring for the needs of the
people the area.
Pat and I would like to extend our most heartfelt congratulations to
Dave and Linda Schumacher, and the entire Schumacher & Sons organization
for 75 years of caring and sharing.

Crews are presently working on three street projects in town. 4th
street from Hill Avenue to Griggs and 6th street from Hill to Manvel
Avenue will look brand new when completed. Kittson Avenue from 5th
street to 12th street will also be completely rebuilt.
So far,.. I cannot see any sign of the repair project to level the
"brick pavers" along both sides of Hill Avenue downtown. Several areas
are dangerously uneven and a twisted ankle or worse is inevitable. Or so
it seems to me.

south of Phoenix. The only other school that I know of that was named
after former Grafton residents was the "Miller" school named for three
Miller sisters who taught in the Tucson, Arizona area for many years.
On another note, we really enjoy your Skeeterville Gazette that
we are privileged. We, although not having lived in Grafton for more
than 60 years, like to keep up with the progress and happenings in
our hometown. Keep Up the good work.

The view of Lake of the Woods off the shores of Arnesen's Rocky Point
Resort seems to get more beautiful every year. Although I didn't get a
chance to get out fishing myself, I talked to several that did and they
reported the fishing, and catching, out of Rocky Point was fantastic.
Wednesday, Captain Tim Hill took a group of guys from Missouri out and
they came in with a their limit of walleye's in the 18½ to 19 and
15/32nd range. One of them commented as he got off the launch that they
wanted to hurry up and book another reservation for later on this year.
One of Rocky Points owners shared the following early season "fishing
tip". Drop your presentation right to the bottom and then pull it up
about an inch or two and "don't jig it around". Walleyes are just
finishing spawning and are lethargic - for us Norwegians, that means
they're so pooped they don't move fast - this time of the year. So,
according to Kay, you have to stick your hook right in front of their
mouth.
Evidently, the guys from Missouri did just that.

Before I left last week I mentioned Clover and Tiny, a couple local St.
Bernards, went missing. I am pleased to share the latest note from
Robin. She wrote. >>> Gary, thank you for posting our request.
This morning after 6 days missing and not one lead our St. Bernard's are
home. What a great way to start the week. Everyone from the police,
radio station, vets, farmers, neighbors and friends were so wonderful to
help us. Again thanks. Brad and Robin Suda <<<

should save a St. Bernard once in awhile....... too.

The Leistikow Park Campground is getting getting busier and busier
every day. By the end of the month it should be full. The folks
responsible for the campground expansion and it's maintenance are to be
commended.
After being gone for a few days it's relatively easy to see how much
busier our little community is now with the influx of our new found,
and, I hasten to add, most welcome and appreciated summer residents.
Of course, it wouldn't be reasonable to expect such an influx of
activity to happen without at least some negativity. To that end I share
the following comment. Although I have taken the liberty of omitting the
specific establishment and replaced individual names with "the manager".
However, the message remains just as valid. >>>
Hi Gary,
I have had a room reserved at a (Motel) for the Summerfest
2008. I have done this for many years.
This week I got a call from (the manager) that they are cancelling my
room because they are renting it to the pipeline workers. I have never
had a reserved room cancelled on me before. I understand that this is
happening at all the motels in Grafton. I hope that it is just a roomer.
We like the (Motel) and (the manager) has always treated us well. (The
manger) said he is going to see if the pipeline workers will give up
these rooms during our Summerfest. If they would have told them at the
beginning that the rooms are taken during that weekend it might have
worked but I drought that they will go for that now. I had planned on
driving to Grafton so I will be able to change my plans but it is going
to be real hard for the ones that have planned on coming by air. I would
think this decision on cancelling the motel rooms would really hurt the
Summerfest celebration. We all look forward to returning to Grafton
during the Summerfest.

Thanks a million for caring and sharing Norm. I see your message as a
very serious issue. One I hope the SummerFest committee takes into
account while planning this years SummerFest activities. One individual
mentioned that he thought our motels cancelling SummerFest reservations
is much like what happened a few years ago when a local motel raised
their prices ridiculously high for the World Hockey Event in Grand
Forks.
Of course, this certainly is NOTHING like that at all. As I see it. My
guess is, that the motels in our town are rarely, if ever, "booked
full". Certainly not for more than a couple of days at best. This
summer, for the entire summer, they will all have the opportunity to
operate at full capacity. Few businesses could only dream of such an
opportunity.
Hence, the question, as I see it. Do you make the decision to fill all
your rooms for just two or three days this summer and run the rest of
the summer as usual? OR, do you fill every room in your facility for the
entire summer?
I'll let everyone answer that question on their own. In my case, I just
hope that everyone in the community can get together and do everything
possible to help accommodate the folks coming to participate in
Grafton's 2008 Annual SummerFest Festivities.

For those of us wondering about the possibility of reopening the
drive-in theater. >>>>
Hi, Gary! After about 6 days of deliberation, I have a best-guess
estimate from Tom about the Drive-In. He figures about $100K to get
it started up. I got quite a history lesson from him (FASCINATING!)
about the whole deal this morning. He said they had a dusk-to-dawn in
September of 1991 (Labor Day), and then the screen blew down in an awful
storm in October. In the spring of 1992, T. Arlo, Tom and Bob Jiskra
took a road trip to try and get estimates to replace that screen. The
closest they got was $20,000 to disassemble one, move it to Grafton and
put it up here PLUS the cost of actually buying it from its current
owner. At that price, they were unable to strike a deal; negotiations
ended and with them went the legacy of the Stardust 17. So there is
your answer: $100,000.00 for a drive-in in Grafton on the 10 acres we
own out there.
On a brighter note, Indiana Jones opens on Thursday! Iron Man
and Narnia are both doing well. Can't WAIT for Batman in July.

Drive-in movie theater west of town. All that needs to happen is,

Gary, the drive in reminds me of some crazy times. My buddy had a 49
Ford convertible and we would hit the drive in on two for a buck
night. Problem is they never thought to check the trunk. It's funny
how the car can get filled with people, two for a buck. That same
car was our crabapple raiding vehicle. I remember jumping off a fence
rail one night to get to a crab apple tree over in Argyle, just happened
to be a cow pasture, I just happened to have white bucks on and white
pants, just happened to be a very wide and very deep you know what in
that cow pasture, and you probably know where I landed by now. I
don't remember how I got home.
I'll probably see Ray this summer, we are having a family reunion
this June.

their prices ridiculously high for the World Hockey Event in Grand
Forks.
Of course, this certainly is NOTHING like that at all. As I see it. My
guess is, that the motels in our town are rarely, if ever, "booked
full". Certainly not for more than a couple of days at best. This
summer, for the entire summer, they will all have the opportunity to
operate at full capacity. Few businesses could only dream of such an
opportunity.
Hence, the question, as I see it. Do you make the decision to fill all
your rooms for just two or three days this summer and run the rest of
the summer as usual? OR, do you fill every room in your facility for the
entire summer?
I'll let everyone answer that question on their own. In my case, I just
hope that everyone in the community can get together and do everything
possible to help accommodate the folks coming to participate in
Grafton's 2008 Annual SummerFest Festivities.

For those of us wondering about the possibility of reopening the
drive-in theater. >>>>
Hi, Gary! After about 6 days of deliberation, I have a best-guess
estimate from Tom about the Drive-In. He figures about $100K to get
it started up. I got quite a history lesson from him (FASCINATING!)
about the whole deal this morning. He said they had a dusk-to-dawn in
September of 1991 (Labor Day), and then the screen blew down in an awful
storm in October. In the spring of 1992, T. Arlo, Tom and Bob Jiskra
took a road trip to try and get estimates to replace that screen. The
closest they got was $20,000 to disassemble one, move it to Grafton and
put it up here PLUS the cost of actually buying it from its current
owner. At that price, they were unable to strike a deal; negotiations
ended and with them went the legacy of the Stardust 17. So there is
your answer: $100,000.00 for a drive-in in Grafton on the 10 acres we
own out there.
On a brighter note, Indiana Jones opens on Thursday! Iron Man
and Narnia are both doing well. Can't WAIT for Batman in July.

significant challenge. The fact is, Grafton CAN have another Stardust 17
Drive-in movie theater west of town. All that needs to happen is,

Gary, the drive in reminds me of some crazy times. My buddy had a 49
Ford convertible and we would hit the drive in on two for a buck
night. Problem is they never thought to check the trunk. It's funny
how the car can get filled with people, two for a buck. That same
car was our crabapple raiding vehicle. I remember jumping off a fence
rail one night to get to a crab apple tree over in Argyle, just happened
to be a cow pasture, I just happened to have white bucks on and white
pants, just happened to be a very wide and very deep you know what in
that cow pasture, and you probably know where I landed by now. I
don't remember how I got home.
I'll probably see Ray this summer, we are having a family reunion
this June.

Workers were cleaning out the former Subway Sandwich facility in
Western Plaza yesterday. I can only guess - as it's been several weeks
since the fire - the aroma from rotten food, smoke, burned plastic and
upholstery must have been a real bugger.
By the looks of the giant dumpster outside. About the only thing
that will be left in the building when the Innis cleanup crew gets done,
will be sailboat fuel.

the Big Sioux truck stop on the south west corner of Grand Forks. I

The motorhome has been cleaned, filled with water, loaded with
fuel, food and the anticipation of another great year of fishing. All
that remains is a quick stop at Schumacher's to check the tires and we
will be heading northeast to Arnesen's Rocky Point Resort on the south
shore of the beautiful Lake of the Woods.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that fishing will be
fantastic again this year. Fishing at Rocky Point is ALWAYS fantastic.
Sometimes, for me at least, it can be just a wee bit slow.
So, for the next few days I'll either be fishing, or wising I was
fishing. If you don't hear from me for a few days, that's probably where
I'll be.

Granddaughter Krystal, (Jeff and Yvette's oldest) will be walking across

Our Grand Niece, Jillian Demester will be celebrating the same
event at the same place, the very same day. So too, will family friend
MacKenzie Dawn Lunski.
Our Grand Niece, Kate Jordan Pederson will be among the members of
the Grand Forks Central graduating class next week as well. As I look at
Kate's picture on her graduation announcement. I simply can't help
thinking how pleased and proud her grandfathers, Chuck and Jarl, would
be if they could only have been here to see their beautiful little Kate
walk across that stag.
Somehow,.... I just know they will.

I'm not sure how many pools have been started, -- on how long before

The Henkels & McCoy pipeline company and the folks they employee
continues to be the main topic of conversation. Already it is easy to
see the impact their operation will have on our little community.
Watching there progression to this point has been fascinating to say
the least. The attention to detail is apparent in every aspect of their
operation.
The community of Grafton should consider itself extremely fortunate
that the Henkels & McCoy Corporation chose our town for a staging area.
At the present time, we must have several dozen of their
representatives living, working and "supporting" our community. Let us
hope "everyone" in the Grafton area extends the support, appreciation
and respect the members of the pipeline organization deserve.

I had breakfast with grandpa Frank this morning, as a matter of fact, I
actually bought him breakfast this morning. And, I notice his sweater
had no buttons. I couldn't help but ask if that was because he had
"popped" them at the graduation ceremony. With a warm giant smile, Frank
replied. "No, but I sure could have."
I can only imagine how great grandpa Jack Loos would have described the
graduation ceremony while cutting new lights for our greenhouse.

First a little hometown house cleaning.
The rumor about new hands running the Daily Grind has come to
fruition. Everyone I've talked to, including everyone in my gene pool,
thinks Janelle Davis will be fantastic in her new venture.
Stop in The Daily Grind on east 5th st. and visit with Janelle
over a fresh brewed cup of coffee.

May 17th is a very important day. Please mark it down on your
calendar today. Special people will be celebrating numorous special
events.

In response to those wondering if I left the country, went
fishing, or was just simply playing hooky the past several days.
I haven't been, intentionally, ignoring you and, its starting to
look like the "goofy" conditions I might expect are appearing a bit more
frequent than I had hoped for.
Normally I would say something like, "I've been a
'little' under the weather lately. That would be close alright. However,
the feeling one might expect from a barnyard full of manure hitting with
hurricane force would be much closer.
Anyway, the Readers Digest Version is I didn't accomplish very
much this past week at all. It all started last Tuesday, as best I can
remember, with a horrible tooth ache, in a place I don't even have a
tooth. That was accompanied by a doozy of a head ache that wasn't
satisfied staying only in my head. Then the swelling came. First it was
my left cheek, then my hands started swelling and soon they looked like
a pair of mittens.
By Thursday I evolved into a super stuffed Nocturnal Norwegian
unable to find significant relief in the myriad of boxes and bottles of
pharmaceuticals stashed around the house. Midol didn't even fizz the
cramps and stiffness.
By Friday I was starting to wonder IF maybe Pat and the rest of
the kids were right. Then the swelling in my hands went down and I could
see my rings again. So,.... I just knew I was getting better. "No need
for this kid to see a doctor." As a matter of fact, Friday night I
konked out early and slept all night. "No need for this kid to see a
doctor."
Saturday morning I was certain things would be better. That
afternoon, while taking a nap my entire family stormed in the house
DEMANDING that I go to the emergency IMMEDIATELY. I told them I was
getting better and,........ and after a couple hour argument, using
every trick I every learned skipping school, etc. etc. I won,........ so
to speak. That is to say I DID NOT GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM Saturday
night. (I thought) When I woke up Sunday morning I felt better
than I have in a good many years and "thought to myself",.... because, I
didn't dare tell Pat, I was right,,,,,, everyone else -- wasn't.
And,... so I walked to the kitchen for a cup of coffee and a piece
of toast. As I was putting the toast in the toaster, I noticed my right
cheek was swelling up a little. When the toast was done, my right cheek
looked like a chipmunk on steroids. Within another hour I noticed I was
having a "little" trouble breathing. AND, by 10:30 Sunday morning "we" -
I bet you can figure who the "we" is - was calling my entire gene pool
telling them that THEY WERE RIGHT. Then of course I had to add, that it
is my Norwegian heritage that requires me to be absolutely certain
something is wrong before I bother the folks that drive expensive cars
because dummies like me wait to long to see them. ANYWAY, with me in
tow, the entire Moe caravan headed for Unity Medical Center.
THANK GOD FOR UNITY HOSPITAL
As we entered the hospital Dr. Joshua Omotunde, and Unity Hospital
nurses were standing there waiting for me. I was not only pleased and
relieved to see them. I was absolutely impressed to see Unity Medical
Centers CEO Everett Butler standing there as well. I took advantage of
the opportunity to tell Everett how fortunate our community is to have
such high caliber health professionals staffing our wonderful medical
facilities.
The next thing I knew, Dr. Josh was poking and probing asking if I
could feel this or that. Then he ordered "some pictures" while peeking
in my mouth, and all the while he was practicing his profession on me,
he was chewing me out for not coming in sooner. I went through the
"tunnel machine", and, I guess I passed that test.
Then it was the time that I dreaded the most, Dr. Josh told us
what happened and that THREE (3) shots would help me. One in each arm
and one in my rumpy. He said they "might" hurt but would certainly help
me. So I started honing up my negotiative skills, and got the rump shot
converted to a pill instead. I must admit, for a minute, I sure was
pleased I didn't have to get the third shot. THEN,... Dr. Josh said,
"but now you come into the clinic tomorrow, and the next day for
injections." RATS, I ended up getting it in the rear after all.
ANYWAY,.. It's been an interesting week that has given me ample
opportunity to think about and appreciate my family and friends. And the
wonderful medical facilities Grafton has to offer.
For all that I am, and all I can be, I am thankful my wonderful
wife can still tolerate me, and so fortunate that my family cares enough
to "force" me to make the right decisions, even though I am sometimes
pointing in the wrong direction.
I'm home now and feeling better with just one thing on my
mind. In a few days, or more, It'll be "Walleye Combine time" and I'll
be at Rocky Point fishing.
Until then, "I'll be wishin, I was fishin".

The pipeline staging area is beginning to fill up. Four large
"greyhound type" buses are there ready to haul workers out to the work
site. Several dozen pickups are lined up out there ready for the project
to start and someone snuck another administrative trailer on that site
as well.
One of the major issues facing the pipeline project, aside from getting
enough workers, will be finding enough rooms in the area for the workers
to stay.
If anyone has a sleeping room, or knows of someone within a twenty (20)
mile radius of Grafton, that has sleeping rooms available please can
contact Donna or Sharon at the H & M office in Grafton at 352-4933.

it's new location in the Western Plaza Shopping Center Tuesday morning.

farmers here have only about 10% of they're planting done and usually

Speaking of caring and sharing. The summer 2008 edition of the Grafton
Alumni Association paper arrived in our house last week. It's a super
way of keeping track of those that have been separated by geography and
profession. The folks that put that publication together do a fantastic
job.
I read, with interest the, What's up with our Alumni, column and was
especially proud when I read the part about my "little" brother A.K.
receiving the Citizen of the Year award. Actually I read it a couple
times and thought to myself how wonderful it was that my little brother
was given such an honor.
Then I received the following note from A. K., he wrote. >>>
Gary, I received the alumni letter and read that I volunteered at
Friendship and the Lutheran Sunset Home, and, I would like to clarify
that a bit if that's okay. Although I don't volunteer at the
Sunset Home, I do have a friend there that I like to take with me for
rides and different things.
The people that do volunteer at the Sunset Home are very important,
and, they do a lot more than take just a man for a ride once and a
while. My hat is off to all of the true volunteers at the Sunset Home.
They are greatly appreciated and they certainly do make the residents
days much better. It's a great place with wonderful management, staff

The pipeline staging area is beginning to fill up. Four large
"greyhound type" buses are there ready to haul workers out to the work
site. Several dozen pickups are lined up out there ready for the project
to start and someone snuck another administrative trailer on that site
as well.
One of the major issues facing the pipeline project, aside from getting
enough workers, will be finding enough rooms in the area for the workers
to stay.
If anyone has a sleeping room, or knows of someone within a twenty (20)
mile radius of Grafton, that has sleeping rooms available please can
contact Donna or Sharon at the H & M office in Grafton at 352-4933.

Grafton's Home of Economy store is scheduled to be open for business in
it's new location in the Western Plaza Shopping Center Tuesday morning.

Speaking of caring and sharing. The summer 2008 edition of the Grafton
Alumni Association paper arrived in our house last week. It's a super
way of keeping track of those that have been separated by geography and
profession. The folks that put that publication together do a fantastic
job.
I read, with interest the, What's up with our Alumni, column and was
especially proud when I read the part about my "little" brother A.K.
receiving the Citizen of the Year award. Actually I read it a couple
times and thought to myself how wonderful it was that my little brother
was given such an honor.
Then I received the following note from A. K., he wrote. >>>
Gary, I received the alumni letter and read that I volunteered at
Friendship and the Lutheran Sunset Home, and, I would like to clarify
that a bit if that's okay. Although I don't volunteer at the
Sunset Home, I do have a friend there that I like to take with me for
rides and different things.
The people that do volunteer at the Sunset Home are very important,
and, they do a lot more than take just a man for a ride once and a
while. My hat is off to all of the true volunteers at the Sunset Home.
They are greatly appreciated and they certainly do make the residents
days much better. It's a great place with wonderful management, staff
and volunteers. Thanks, A.K.

I think someone, somewhere once said, "what goes around..... comes
around." An incident on the south end of town gives that quote credence.
If your old enough to remember the cars of the fifties and sixties.
And, If you also attended all of the Spoilers football games during
those "good old days". Then you're old enough, and, you most likely do
remember the Streaker, wearing nothing but a smile and his high top
boots, streaking across Chandler Field.
Those old memories were revived once again the other night. It seems a
fellow wearing nothing but a puzzled look and a few rows of goose bumps,
knocked on the door of a couple homes in the same the southend
neighborhood that Paul Stave, our Chief of Police lives.
Rumor has it, when the ladies were asked if they could identify the
individual that knocked on their door they responded, "only from the
shoulders up.
The "streaker" has been apprehended and is now a temporary resident of
our local Law Enforcement facility.

The Minto Cafe re-opened for business on Monday, April 28th. Every
community needs a cafe, a place to take nourishment and copious amounts
of caffeine. Local cafes also provide a venue for the exchange of
information. Often, it seems, in equal amounts of both fact and fiction.
I encourage all the folks in the Minto community to support their
re-opened restaurant. I applaud those involved with the new venture and
wish them the very best in the future.

You may have noticed that every once in awhile a member of the Molde
family is mentioned in the Gazette.
Bennie not only delivered the milk and dairy product to our house. He
also delivered flowers for Grafton Floral every major holidays for many
tears.
Mildred was not only a fantastic mother to a wonderful family. She also
took care of our kids so Pat could go to work and help pay our bills.
Although Mildred and Bennie's family was a large one, they always had
time for others as well. Yes, I do have a great admiration for the Molde
family. When people work as hard as the Moldes do. They have earned, and
deserve, all the admiration one can give.
I have mentioned several Molde family members throughout the years. May
4th Marcia, their youngest, will celebrate the anniversary of her birth
by adding another candle to her cake.
Happy Birthday Marcia (Molde) Seeba, from all of us in the Moe gene
pool. And, HAPPY BIRTHDAY from your entire family Marcia, they truly
love you dearly.

It sounds like Alice is preparing for their annual migration.

Well, it's time for the Hartman's to pack up again and head East. We
are in the process of deciding what we need to take and what to leave
here...always a big question, and we still haven't figured out how to
remember not to duplicate stuff. We will stay in Reno until Sunday
and then go north for a change. (Granddaughter Mercedes will stay
with us at the motel in Reno so we have to find one with a pool!)
Haven't gone the northern way yet. We like to see different
parts of the country instead of just racing across the same route. We
also like to take the two lane roads instead of interstate...much more
interesting. Just hope the snow is gone up north. We'll be in
Sioux Falls the next weekend celebrating Mother's Day with Gene's mom
and the family, and take off Monday for the lake. We have the dock in
but I understand there is still ice in the middle of the lake yet so we
won't be taking the boat out anytime soon. Gene is anxious to get
started with a garden. He built three huge planting boxes for Audrey
to plant her garden in this year and they look really nice. He
finished our retaining wall except for putting the dirt all back, but it
has to settle for awhile anyhow, and I can plant it next year. We had
to replace a hunk of fence also and tear down an old lean-to that was a
real eyesore. More wood for our winter fires! We will miss our
card games with Chuck & Linda (Gene's sister and brother in law), but
I'm apparently on a losing streak anyhow. Better not hit the casinos
in Reno for sure! We will miss our friends and family here in
Sacramento, but are looking forward to seeing the crowd back east
too. We have truly the best of both worlds. Better get
packing...Gene is starting to pace! Please pray for good weather and
road conditions for a safe trip, and we'll get in touch when we get
settled back in "God's country".

Folks were working around the new railroad locomotive "longhouse" and
office Wednesday. That facility sure is a wonderful addition to the
north end of main street.

Another administrative support trailer was spotted in the pipeline
stagging area west of the Developmental Center. Every day now more and
more pipeline equipment is showing up around town.

Work on Leistikow Parks new camper spots continues. The twelve new 50
amp spots will be a super improvement to the campground.

The sign on the door of the "old" Home of Economy store, indicates that
the "new" Home of Economy store will be open on May 6. in their new
location in the former Denny's Food Pride building in the Western Plaza
"strip mall" on the west edge of Grafton.

should be checked for expiration dates, as someone went shopping at the
grocery store and was going to use their Grafton bucks, but they were
expired......... So the prize they won didn't help any. Someone goofed.
They do make fantastic gifts otherwise. Thanks. <<<<
According to the folks at the chamber office, Grafton Bucks do not have
a expiration date on them. I take that to mean,... they are going to be
as good as our Uncle Sam's "in God we Trust" greenback dollars and that
they should, o could, last just as long.
I'm guessing the Grafton bucks the previous note refers to were
actually NOT Grafton Bucks at all. Rather, they were the "Utility
Refund" certificates distributed by Grafton Municipal Utility last fall.
They did have an expiration date. And, if I remember correctly, the
Utility Bucks also came with a significant amount of warning, on KXPO
radio, The Walsh County Record and even the Gazette, saying that they
MUST be used by a specific date.

The former home of Sam's Soda Fountain in the Nelson Drug Store appears
to be back to storing sailboat fuel again. I don't know where the most
recent renters went. However, I certainly hope we are in the process of
booting their assets out of town.
While we're gearing up to kick assets around. Maybe we can rattle the
cages of the fine folks that claim the former Walsh County Bank Building
as an asset.
The vacant building is full of mold, mildew, mice and broken windows.

Speaking of mold, mildew and mice. I understand the building that
housed the Subway Sandwich Station, prior to the fire, is still full of
food. Even though there hasn't been power or refrigeration in that
facility since the fire. One would have to wonder what all those "work
in progress" subway sandwiches must look and smell like after all this
time.
Somehow, simply leaving that facility plump full of rotting food
doesn't sound like a very environmentally friendly thing to do.

You may remember the other day I mentioned the folks at Grafton
Lutheran were collecting scrap iron for a couple worthy causes. One of
those causes was for a church in Northwood.
Today, Sue mentions another worthy cause in Northwood. She wrote. >>>

As I'm sure you know, Northwood is in need of a LOT of
things. A big one is books for their new library, a combination of the
city and the school libraries. They are in need of all kinds of books
for all ages.
Author Lauraine Snelling got the ball rolling by asking for a
TON of books. We have made a good start at Carnegie Regional Library. If
anyone would like to donate (spring cleaning, and all), items can be
brought to the library. Please indicate for Northwood.

What can one say, when a friend looses a loved one? What words should
be used to express how we feel. Sometimes, if close enough, a hug might
suffice. Often just being there with a warm friendly smile, can convey
words that whole volumes cannot.
Today, unfortunately, is one of those times, that appropriate words,
are really hard to find. But somehow, I feel it's essential to say, that
Kathryn's family has been so important to me. With a sadness I'm finding
so difficult to express. With deepest sympathies and sorrow I must share
the following message.

You may remember the other day I mentioned the folks at Grafton
Lutheran were collecting scrap iron for a couple worthy causes. One of
those causes was for a church in Northwood.
Today, Sue mentions another worthy cause in Northwood. She wrote. >>>

things. A big one is books for their new library, a combination of the
city and the school libraries. They are in need of all kinds of books
for all ages.
Author Lauraine Snelling got the ball rolling by asking for a

anyone would like to donate (spring cleaning, and all), items can be
brought to the library. Please indicate for Northwood.

What can one say, when a friend looses a loved one? What words should
be used to express how we feel. Sometimes, if close enough, a hug might
suffice. Often just being there with a warm friendly smile, can convey
words that whole volumes cannot.
Today, unfortunately, is one of those times, that appropriate words,
are really hard to find. But somehow, I feel it's essential to say, that
Kathryn's family has been so important to me. With a sadness I'm finding
so difficult to express. With deepest sympathies and sorrow I must share
the following message.

Several folks have written in wondering how our Country Smokehouse
Apple Cinnamon Stuffed Pork Chops turn out the other day. Please keep in
mind that I am much more of a consumer than I am a connoisseur. However,
the pork chops were tender and tasty. The stuffing was moist with a just
enough apple cinnamon seasoning to tickle the taste buds. In a word,....
fantastic.
Just as soon as Pat and my sucrose meter says it's okay, I'm going to
throw a special cut Country Smokehouse Rib-Eye Steak on the bar-be-cue
grill, with just enough 57 sauce to draw my attention to a few onions
rings leaning up against a half dozen fried mushrooms. Topped off with a
small pile of lightly buttered American fry's. All, I might add,
complimented by a reasonably sized glass of pre-global warming ice cubes
covered by diet 7-up mixed with the fluid the flows from a purple bag.

I understand Leistikow Park will be adding another "attraction" this
summer.
The newest addition to Leistikow Park this summer will be DISC/FRISBEE
Golf!!! I understand the Welding Students at the vocational school built
all the baskets and park employee's will be installing them in May.
Look for the new 9-hole disc/frisbee golf course in the coming weeks.
It'll be free and open to the public... So,.... that's another activity
to keep us busy in Grafton!

If you haven't noticed the giant billboard sign as you enter Grafton
from the east. Take a drive out to the east edge of town and take a
look. You really must see it to appreciate it, but I can give you a
"sneak preview".
The sign reads, in giant letters across the top,.... STATE CHAMPS,
then it recognizes our 2008 State Championship wins in Hockey,
Basketball and Cross Country. The sign was put up courtesy of Grafton's
Alchem plant.
It sure is a wonderful way to recognize the efforts of so many of our
youth.

Speaking of working together. The folks over at the Grafton Lutheran
Church have taken on a interesting project. Denise Sevigny (Embroidery
Plus) sent the following information.
Subject: Salvage Drive
Gary:
Just a note to give Grafton citizens an opportunity to contribute to
a couple of worthwhile programs. Grafton Lutheran Church has recently
sponsored a salvage drive during "Go Green" week. We have extended it
through this week to give people in the community an opportunity to
participate. The proceeds will be equally divided between the Northwood
Tornado Recovery and our local Vacation Bible School program (which is
open to all children who are currently of school age regardless of
denomination or if they don't belong to a church family).
If you read the city clean-up instructions, items like batteries
and appliances are not included. We are accepting batteries and
appliances (except refrigerators and freezers), as well as other metals.
Some items that have been donated so far are garage door tracks,
silverware, plow shears, and too many other items to mention. We have a
wonderfully dedicated member of our church who has sorted items for us
once they are delivered. People can drop items next to the shed behind
Grafton Lutheran this week. Or if people have items they would like to
donate but can't transport them, they may call Grafton Lutheran Church
(352-2638) and provide a name, address and phone number so we can
collect the final items Saturday morning between 9 am and 12 noon.
Thanks for your help in spreading the word about this project.

If you haven't toured the "The Garnett House" in St.Thomas you've
missed seeing one of the areas Grandest Homes. For many years - while
Josephine "Garnett" Miller occupied the home - as a member of the
Grafton Floral family, I had the opportunity to deliver and often help
Josephine decorate her marvelous home for various special occasions
throughout the year.
This Sunday, May 4 the Historic Garnett House in St. Thomas will be
host the annual Tea and open house from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. You will
also see a grand selection of German Dresden Porcelain Lace Figurines.
Tickets for this memorable event will be $7. The Garnett Home, located
on the North end of the main street in St. Thomas, is run by the St.
Thomas Preservation Society.

Workers have been seen hauling merchandise into the new "Home" of Home
of Economy located on the west side of Grafton.

While I was driving through Leistikow Park Monday afternoon I was
thinking. How wonderful it's going to be, to see the park full of people
all summer. I thought of the 30 or more mobile units that will be
taking up residents in town, for the whole summer. All, or certainly
most, of them will be here seven days a week. Something many local
residents (including me) can't say.
Our community could well have 350 to 400 new, temporary, people living
here for the entire summer. Some, in fact, just might find that our
little community offers then exactly the kind of tranquility they have
been looking for, and stay for good.
Some of our new visitors have already mentioned, how nice they think
our little community is and how much it has to offer.

Yesterday I received a call from a nice lady that works at Sunset. She
called to request a Legion Baseball Ticket, and, while she was at it,
she asked if she could be also be included in the Gazette Family. She
mentioned that she as been getting the Gazette from the "news from
Grafton" website. However, she said, it isn't always up to date".
So,.... now we have another new member of the Gazette family, ticket
#322 will go in the barrel with Pat's name on it, AND, the baseball
folks have another sponsor.

Yesterday I received a note from a former Grafton resident saying they
will be sending a $100 check for our Baseball players. The note said
that I "needn't" mention anything about it,... "it's just fun to donate
to something that keeps the younger generation busy and having fun."
So let it suffice to say. Thanks a million to the owners of a trucking
firm with the moniker DB Trucking, and a special thanks to you Marie.

I understand somebody was questioning the logic of increasing the
Leistikow Campgrounds. I have also heard, someone, suggested that the
additional spaces (12) that are being added to the campground will not
leave enough open space for local residents to play on.
Obviously, those individuals simply haven't spent enough time driving
around researching their concerns.
I may miss a place or two, however I see acres of unused open play
areas all over town. Not the least of which, is the area just east of
the Centennial Center. The West 8th street softball field is another
prime spot to throw a frisbee. Of course Pumpkin Park offers additional
playground space as does Chandler Field and of course we shouldn't
forget the Southends Buster Schumacher Park. Then there is the State
Developmental slew, that would be a fantastic area to "run til you
drop".
Another fabulous place to romp and stomp is what some have called the
Eagles Park just East of the Golf Course Club House. That's a great
place to picnic and play touch football. As is the many acres in the
Green Belt area, north of the river. We shouldn't forget our meandering
little river, offering our residents a super place for canoeing.
AND,... I haven't even mentioned the many areas of Leistikow Park that
provides ample room for about any activity one could think of. Not to
mention the three Baseball Diamonds and as many Tennis Courts around
town. Plus Fantastic facilities for Curling, Archery, Bowling, and Golf
shouldn't be overlooked on that research tour as well.
Our community offers the fabulous Heritage Village with thousands of
interesting items from the past on display and of course beautifully
restored Elmwood must be included in that tour around town too.
Yes, I guess those 12 additional camping spots will take up a little
space in the park. They also create the possibilities of a significant
economic impact to a community that needs every dollar it has, just to
survive.
The Leistikow Park Campground is the only entity, I'm aware of, that
specifically addresses the needs of a group of people from outside the
area that actually do want to come to town to relax, and, as often as
not, to spend a little money too.
Or so it seems to me.

You will have 22 daily chances to win $50 and 5 chances to win the $100
Saturday draws.
Simply drop me a note telling me you have put your check in the mail,
and please include your address. I will fill out your lucky ticket and
make certain it gets in the barrel for the drawings.
I can't guarantee you'll win. I can, however, guarantee that you will
feel better for doing it.

Todays Gazette is brought to you, in part, by the tax refund paid to us
with money, borrowed from the chinese, so we can buy more stuff from
Wal-Mart........ that was made in China.

The current temperature is 42.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 48/21
Normal H/L temp for this date is 62/36
It was 91 degrees on this date in 1952.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.

The BP gas station is officially closed this morning. Rumor has it that
it will remain so til the new "Real" Subway Sandwich Store reopens in
that location in a couple months or so. I also understand that location
will also continue to be a gas station as well.
It appears that the BP "free" coffee clutch crew will be taking up
residence in Mylo's former body shop across the street, just east of
Mac's Bottle Shop.

Work began this morning on the Leistikow Park Campground expansion.
Already one can get a good idea of what that project will look like when
completed.

Every day more and more pieces of pipeline equipment can be see around
town. The Stagging area is starting to take shape and the south piece is
already being used for newly arriving equipment.
I'm not sure what has happened to the "crows net" issue. It almost
seems like the area that was once fenced off, now has a mountain of
beautiful black Red River Valley topsoil piled there.
Maybe the crows aren't planning to migrate here this year. Or, maybe
crows quit migrating altogether, so it's okay to work close to their
nests.

I talked to Rocky Point resident Bill Hill yesterday and he told me
there was still more than enough snow up there to build a snowman. I
asked him if the fishing was going to be good at Arnesen's again this
year and he said, "absolutely". Of course,.... he didn't mention how the
catching would be.

Some folks say it's best to let a sleeping dog lie. Assuming of course,
that the dog isn't rabid,..... or,..... in the nursery.

That's all the time we have left to get in on this years American
Legion / High School Baseball calendar drawing.
Help the Legionaires help our youth.
I still have several (many) American Legion Baseball
Calendar Draw tickets looking for a lucky winner. Ticket holders will
have a chance to win $50 on the 22 weekday drawings and $50 for each of
the 5 Saturday drawings.
(only 400 total tickets will be sold,.... if we can even
sell them all.) Another way to look at it,.... is, all of the kids
involved with baseball end up winners with each ticket sold. Only 3 days
left to be included in the May Calendar drawing. Please consider helping
the Legionaires support and maintain the American Legion / high school
summer baseball program.
Simply drop me a note and let me know your check is in the
mail. I'll put your name on a "lucky" ticket and then I will make
certain your ticket gets into the drum in time for the drawing.

Some folks have already figured out if all the tickets aren't sold,...
they'll have a lot better chance at winning.

haven't even mentioned meals on wheels, Senior Citizens Bingo or the
school lunch menu yet.

As I am writing this, Pat is cooking some apple cinnamon pork chops we
got from the Country Smokehouse yesterday. If they taste just a little
bit as good as they smell,..... I probably won't need to eat any supper.
