In my quest to find a method of shortening Fridays Gazette - when it
gets to long even I don't read it - I inadvertently "chopped off" a
significant portion of Bill Shininger's note. As a matter of fact, I
missed a REAL important part of his note. Breakfast at Granny's. Bill
wrote. "I can't say enough good things about this fine place. The
food is great, and the servers are the best. This is an
establishment we look forward to visiting each year for our breakfast
and supper everyday."
Sorry Bill, I actually did read the Gazette before sending it out. My
only excuse is that I must be suffering from the early onset of "old age
disease".

Loren Lundberg found time, between the Barrette-Jackson Auctions in
Arizona reminiscing about his youth in Grafton.
He wrote; >>>
Ah, yes. It is impossible to forget that first step and first breath
as you step out the back door into -30+ "warmth"; the crackling burst of
pain as your sinus cavity tries to leave your skull and go back inside,
the second breath that actually takes in air and prepares you, hatless
of course, for your run to Grafton Central, with a possible warmup/coke
stop at Campbell's Conoco. On GREAT days, it might actually be in
sunshine! Instead, today I'll celebrate the end of 30 days of long pants
with a pair of shorts and a walk through the cars at one of the
auctions. Stay warm.

long, 5 or 6 months, and we to will be cutting the legs off our long

Hello Gary,
I would like to share some news about the passing of a former Grafton
resident with the "Gazette" readers.
Many people who lived in the Grafton area during the early
1980s and had anything to do with sports or the American Legion will
remember Ted Albasini who was the sports writer for The Grafton Record
for several years. For many years after Ted left Grafton, I only kept in
contact with him through our annual Christmas cards. Then with the
invention of the great internet and Yahoo Messenger, I and my children
had the opportunity to share many chat conversations with Ted. He often
asked about the Stark family and others he had met through coverage of
local sporting events.
We had not heard from Ted in awhile, but I sent the annual
Christmas card in December anyway. Not long after, I received an email
from his daughter informing me of Ted's death in September. Responding
to his Christmas cards was the only means she had to inform many of his
friends of his passing.
Would you kindly share his obituary, which I also submitted to The
Grafton Record, with the Gazette readers. I know you have a large
readership, and I am sure many will remember Ted. Thank you Gary for the
service you provide, not only to Grafton, but the "Great Beyond."
~ Sue Matcha
Theodore "Ted" Albasini, 73, El Cajon, Calif., and formerly of Grafton,
died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, in San Diego, Calif., following a short
battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Sept. 15, 2008, in San
Diego.
Ted Albasini was born Jan. 6, 1937, in Hurley, Wis., the son of
Theodore and Leila Albasini. He was raised there and graduated from
Hurley High School. He served in the United States Navy for 20 years. In
1957, he married Muriel Green in San Diego. He attended Mesa College and
San Diego State University in San Diego, Calif. He was employed for 10
years in the field of journalism in Bottineau and Friendship, Wis., and
as the sports editor for The Grafton Record. He was a member of the
American Legion and served on the city commission in Friendship.
Following his retirement, he moved to El Cajon, Calif.
He is survived by his son, Ted (Kathy) Albasini, Bowdin, Me.;
daughter, Debbie (Syd) Fontenot, San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren
and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
great-grandchild, Jayden Sawyer; and sisters, Mary and Louise. He was
loved and will be missed by everyone.
~~
P.S. ~ Gary, one thing that was not mentioned in Ted's obituary that
I discovered while searching the internet, was that Ted authored a book
a few years ago. The book's title is "The Progeny" and anyone interested
can search Google under Theodore J. Albasini and they will find
information on it. Thanks Again!! <<<<
Thank you Sue. News and information is a funny thing. It's not news,
until someone makes it. However, it's really not information, until
someone cares to share it. Thanks again, for caring and sharing.

I received the following comments and concerns regarding Yesterdays
mention of the AmericInn. >>>>
Hi Gary,
I'm getting a little tired of all the "bad" remarks targeted at the
AmericInn, especially when we're trying to figure out how to "better"
our community, not dig one of the nicest buildings in the ground! It
also frustrates me that some of the comments come from a friend of a
friend of a family friend someone knows. Most of the comments have been
either blown out of proportion in frustration or the facts haven't been
straight (regular room rates versus suite rates.) Also, take into
account the thousands that have stayed there and enjoyed their stay
versus the few people that didn't. We've all had bad experiences with
various situations but somehow the good ones don't get published. A nice
hotel with a swimming pool was on the top of the list of priorities for
the city when the hotel was built. This business was not built as a
community service project, but to provide a return for the investors.
Nobody has offered to pay the bills when there are very few occupants
that don't come close to covering the costs to keep the place open.
However, the few crabapples seem to have a lot to say when they get
charged a little more when Grafton has events going on that benefit the
city as a whole from restaurants to gas stations to retail. Thanks for
your time. <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing. I should add that I am
withholding the name upon request. It certainly is true that most folks
neglect to mention the positive aspects of a business. On the other
hand, however, most businesses ask "how was everything?" when you stand
at the cash register to pay. The assumption, then, must be that they
really do want to know and if something is wrong, they would make every
effort to correct it. Obviously, when that doesn't happen, very often,
something else does. Enuff said.

to a friendly GM Service Center.
With a handshake and a smile, we went our separate ways to return to
the comfort and security of our families, homes and daily routines. We
are rich with stories, experiences and friendships reinstated. I must
admit that breakfast and our evening at Marketplace on 8th, are some of
the highlights of the trip. I really enjoy the time we spend visiting
with you and some of your friends caring and sharing. The Gazette is
great, but not nearly as personal as sitting across the table and
visiting over a meal.
Thank you to everyone in the Grafton community who helped to make our
stay all it can be. Again the Leonard Motel was a great home away from
home. We are already making plans for next years trip and look forward
to the cold temps, snow and hospitality, all of which we had plenty
this year.

I am saddened to report the passing of a friend and one of Grafton's
finest citizens, Paul C. Benjaminson. I have known Paul for more than
fifty years. I doubt that our world has ever harbored anyone more honest
and sincere than Paul. He always seemed to have time, or, he would make
time, to help anyone out whenever he could. I've seem Paul whisper when
others would shout, yet he would come up with the answers, when others
had doubt.
I will miss seeing Paul, but I will never forget him. Nor do I believe
will anyone else that ever knew him. ~~~~~~~~~~
Paul Benjaminson, age 82 of Grafton, ND passed away on Thursday,
January 15, 2009 at the Unity Medical Center of Grafton. Paul C.
Benjaminson was born September 8, 1926 in Gardar, ND the son of the late
Gudmundur and Gudrun (Halldorson) Bemjaminson. He graduated from
Edinburg H S in 1944. In December of 1944 he enlisted in the United
States Army, serving until August of 1947. Following his discharge he
returned to Edinburg where he was united in marriage to Aldys Nygard on
September 21, 1947. The couple lived in Edinburg for two years when they
moved to Grafton. He worked for Glenn Mohagen for a short time then went
to work at Nygard's Auto as an automobile mechanic. In 1967 Paul and
Harris Nygard purchased the business and they owned and operated the
business until 1983 when they closed the business. He then worked as a
power plant operator at the Grafton Developmental Center until retiring.
Aldys passed away on Feb. 13, 1991.
Paul was a member of the Grafton Lutheran Church, the American Legion
Post #41, V.F.W. Post #9367, the Eagle's Club, the Icelandic Community
Association, the Northeast ND Pioneer Machinery Association, the Rollag
Steam Threshers Association and the Walsh County Historical Society.
Paul is survived by his daughters: Dawn (Wally) Johnson, Grafton; Jane
(Clayton) Mohagen, Grafton; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren
and brother George (Hedda) Benjaminson, Bothell, WA. He was preceded in
death by his parents, wife and sisters: Marjorie Mohagen and Bernice
Ivers.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 19, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the
Grafton Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 P.M. with a
prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton.
Friends may also call at the church on Monday for one hour prior to the
service. Interment will be at the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery. Military
rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion Post #41.
The Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton is in charge of the arrangements.

Gary -
A friend of mine chose to stay at the AmericInn here in Grafton. When
she checked in, nothing was stated to her about the pool's heater being
broken. She had her child with her and had hoped to use the facilities
for a nice relaxing weekend getaway.
Once she found out of the broken heater in the pool (and the fact that
the pool was ice cold), she felt misled. She phoned the AmericInn today
to speak to a manager. She got the assistant manager. When expressing
her concern about the hotel, the amount she paid with the pool not being
accessible, the assistant manager told her that it was "not their
responsibility to tell them of the pool's status" and "that if she
didn't like the fact that the pool heater was not working, she should
have checked out and gone somewhere else".
This was the ASSISTANT MANAGER speaking.
What happened to customer service? I am embarrassed of the way the
hotel treated my friend and her family. I will never recommend the
AmericInn to anyone ever again. I forwarded my friend the number
to the cooperate headquarters of AmericInn.
Hopefully there she will get some customer service worth something.
AmericInn of Grafton and their management should be ashamed of the
way they treated someone who paid nearly 95.00 dollars for a
smoke infested
bed and no extras.
Sincerely -
A disappointed recommender of AmericInn. (NEVER
again.) Thanks a million for caring and sharing. Solving issues such as
this would be one super way of addressing the "what does this community
have to offer" question. Or so it seems to me.

Lyle Anderson wrote; >>>
Gary, it's interesting to see your minus degree weather. My
brother works for Marvin Windows in Roseau, and I think they are
getting your same weather. We don't get it too often here where we
live in Idaho, but I have seen a minus 30 here, working outside
framing a house in the mid 80's, but not since.
I remember as a kid laying at night in our house in Warren, Mn., we
could almost tell the outside temperature by the noise of the popping
in the exterior walls of our house. It sounded like someone was
shooting a 22 rifle in our walls. My theory is that it was the
moisture collecting on the nails through the siding and actually
causing them to move in the framing. I'm not sure if that was the
reason or not. If any of your readers know the reason, I'd like
to know. I've told the story for 60 years like I described above
,and I probably wouldn't change it now, but maybe for my own
satisfaction. I remember seeing a minus 50 on the thermometer several
times. It's probably a good thing we didn't know anything about
wind-chill then, I probably wouldn't have been out rabbit hunting at 20
below. Where is Mr. Gore when you need him??? Keep warm, lyle <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Lyle. I can't answer the noisy
house question. However, rumor has it Al Gore is out in Yellowstone
checking out the tremors around Old Faithful. It sounds like he's
suggesting we should shut down all of our National Parks,... before they
all blowup.

the land of the snowbirds. >>>> Gary,
A hi from Mesa, Arizona where it is close to 100 degrees warmer than
Grafton --- it's 75 now.. We are having a record breaking January also.
Yesterday's high broke the record for that date in history by 1 degree.

causing them to move in the framing.
It sounds like he's
suggesting we should shut down all of our National Parks,... before they
all blowup.

A hi from Mesa, Arizona where it is close to 100 degrees warmer than
Grafton --- it's 75 now.. We are having a record breaking January also.
Yesterday's high broke the record for that date in history by 1 degree.

Hi Gary,
My Mom just sent me the pamphlet from Fr. Lommel's funeral and I am
reading the front of it. He said he was always surrounded by good
people, but the truth of it is that he always FOUND the good in people.
I hope we will always remember his kindness and non-judgmental ways.
And, by the way, people here in Charlotte think we are in a cold spell -

When you asked the question "what does our community have to
offer?," I was reminded of a binder we have in our home library (not the
library you often refer to). It was a community assessment compiled
while my husband was the chamber exec. and included information about
the community, schools, hospital, activities, etc. It was in a blue
three-ring binder with the Grafton Centennial logo on the front. We
still have several copies if anyone in city government or the chamber
would like to have one. It might be a starting point for a new city
assessment. Have a great day.

Hi Gary. Wishing I was a millionaire and could afford to tear down both
the Getz Drug and old bank building to open the area for a GREAT gazebo
and memorial park "The Joe Birkeland City Square". So apropos,
considering a lot of people spent a lot of evenings enjoying Joe's
wonderful [and very special] talent near that very location. If anyone
has ever been to Woodstock, Ill. Just outside of Chicago, they'll see a
wonderful "City Square", with the farmers displaying fresh fruits,
veggies, flowers and fresh pies and pastries every Sat. a.m. Wouldn't it
be great to have our own "Farmer's Market"?? I'm still a dreamer. Thanks
for all you do. No Name Hugs to you and Pat.

Thanks a million for caring and sharing. I think The Joe Birkeland
City Square Idea is a fantastic one. It would be a wonderful addition,

and one that I would have hoped "no-one" living in our area would have
to ask.
In light of "the question", I believe It would behoove our community
leadership, the City Council, our Chamber of Commerce and every business
manager as well as each and every citizen of our community to strive to
find the answer/s to it. --- "What does this community have to offer?"

This morning, as "our" Ohio Fox Hunting friends walked into Granny's
for the very last time, this year. I couldn't help thinking how lucky
"our" little community is to have such a fantastic group of true
sportsman choose Grafton as their winter hunting destination. How
fortunate that the Leonard Motel serves as their favorite Hunting Lodge
and that they have designated Grafton's Granny's Restaurant as their
"Breakfast Nook" of choice. We (our little community) should also be
pleased that "our" Ohio Fox Hunting Friends truly enjoy and appreciate
the Fantastic Food, Facilities and Service that the MarketPlace on 8th
here in Grafton provides them and everyone throughout the area.
I must admit that I am also very much impressed and appreciative of
their hunting attitude in general. They always leave me with the feeling
that they definitely are just as interested in the camaraderie and
process of the hunt, as they are the hunted.
To coin a phrase I have often used, with just a slight variation. They
might say, "hunting is always fantastic, sometimes we even find what
we're hunting."
Our friends left us today but they're not taking everything back to
Ohio with them. They left behind numerous memories of the conversations
our breakfast group enjoyed during the past 11 mornings at Granny's.
They left behind many wonderful memories of a evening full of caring and
sharing at the MarketPlace on 8th. They also left our little community,
and, all those that know then,.... very anxiously awaiting their return
next winter.
And,.... as if all of that wasn't enough. "Our" Ohio Fox Hunting
Friends left us with a significant monetary contribution. Because, they
say, "we want to give a little something back to the community".

Empty buildings isn't only a small town malady. In fact the larger the
city, the more sailboat storage facilities they harbor (pardon the pun).
It is true that the former Penny's building will need a pile of
dollars and a new owner to get back into business. The Getz Drug
building is presently being heated, I suspect hoping for a hot prospect
and then there's the former Walsh County Bank building. I'm guessing
there never was enough money in the vault of the former bank to
resurrect the building sufficient to sustain a viable business.
On the other hand, there is one former, single tenant, building
downtown that is adding to the list of active business establishments.
Some still refer to the building as the former Northwestern Bell
Telephone building. I have taken the liberty of "naming" it, The Tower
Building.
Anyway, the building has evolved from a telephone building to the
offices of KXPO Radio. Presently the Tower Building houses all, or, part
of no less than five individual businesses establishments plus an
apartment.
The latest business venture to join the downtown Tower Building group
is Jon Jelinek's Chiropractic Clinic.
Welcome to Grafton Jon, we wish you and your new business venture the

From the street, it appears as though the former Getz Drug Store
building on Hill Avenue is being returned to a temporary sailboat fuel
storage facility once again.
Workers could be seen removing and loading the robots, designed to fill
prescription drugs, into a truck earlier this week. The automated drug
packing equipment was installed in the former Getz Drug building more
than a year ago. Unfortunately the equipment has never been used.
I can only hope that a real serious evaluation of the former Getz Drug
building, in it's present configuration, and the adjoining former Walsh
County Bank building, in it's repulsive state of repair, is completed
before sending addition good dollars after bad.

~~~~~ SATURDAY MORNING ~~~~~
The Grafton Wrestling program is having a Sausage, Egg and Pancake
Breakfast fundraiser this Saturday, January 10, 2009, in the Century
Elementary Lunchroom. The event takes place from 7am-10am and the
cost is $5 for adults and $3 for school age children. Preschool and
under are free. This is the Wrestling programs 4th year and the
athletes and coaches have put in a lot of hard work over the past 4
years to develop the program. There are a lot of outstanding young
wrestlers on our team and work hard to represent our community
positively. It is hoped the community will support the wrestling
program by coming out for a great pancake breakfast Saturday morning.
Additionally, community members can cheer on some of our local JV
wrestlers at the JV tournament that will be held in the High School Gym
following the pancake breakfast.
Speaking of the wrestling program. I received the following note from
It hardly seems possible that it has already been 4 years since Gene
Fayette sat at our dinning room table discussing a fund raising program
to purchase a mat and other incidental items to get Graftons first
wrestling program established.
Thru the significant efforts of Gene, and others, the wrestling
program has come to fruition. Like all fledgling programs, sufficient
funding for, and duly deserved recognition of, such projects are
difficult to achieve at best. The wrestling group is hoping that this
Saturday mornings breakfast fundraising event will help them in both
areas. I hope you will set aside time this Saturday to enjoy a breakfast
and help the wrestlers at the same time.
It sounds like a super breakfast to help fund Graftons newest youth
athletic endeavors.
It's the cold and flu season in Shivercity. Pat found that out first
hand. Hence, we had another opportunity to utilize and appreciate the
fantastic services and facilities of Unity Medical Center in Grafton.
After Dr. Kotnik's examination, several tests and a shot from Kriss
Dusek, Dr Kotnik's nurse. Pat was admitted to Unity hospital for some
rest and "rehydration". We're hoping everything will be much better by
today.
During our visit to the clinic, I noticed that not only is Unity
Hospital getting a whole new look, Kriss was sporting a brand new hair
style (since our last visit) as well.
tonight. The e-mail address you gave probably doesn't work
All that being said, thank you for your ongoing efforts with the
Shivercity Gazette. I was saddened to learn of Father Lommel's
death. I remember him trying to tell me I should become a priest one
of the times when I was participating in a wedding at St. John's. The
significance of that was that I was Lutheran. More likely, it was
because I beat him once or twice on the golf course in Grafton.
Todays Gazette is brought to you from the home of "Frosty" the Snowman.
--------------------------
The current temperature is -24 degrees
The "feels like" temperature is -24
Yesterdays H/L temperature was -2/-25
Normal H/L temp for this date is 15/-4
It was 42 degrees on this date in 1984
It is presently 36 degrees colder outside than temperature in our
freezer.
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
---------------------------
The latest snowfall event in the area raised the snowcat dust level
within an inch or two of the rear flap of a large pair of long johns.
Even though the last snowfall was the most significant. Grafton's GMU
crews had our community streets open and useable before the early Sunday
afternoon coffee clutch.
Personally, I find it difficult to enjoy the additional snow and cold
weather. On the other hand, our visiting Ohio Fur Farmers seem to thrive
on it. It sounds as though. One of the perceived "deadeye" members of
the Buckeye State Fur Farmers group reportedly nailed his target at 800
yards. That just may be why the Ohio State Motto is, "With God (and a
rifle) all things are possible."
----------------------------
Many area residents are anxiously waiting for this Wednesday to
celebrate the life of Father George Lommel at his funeral service. I'm
not sure why, but for some reason it appears as though the Norman
Funeral Home in Grand Forks has also become involved with Fr. Lommels
funeral service.
Of the many notes and comments regarding Father Lommel so far, for me
at least, the following note from Gloria Charlton gives the broadest
insight to the man so many admire for so long. Gloria wrote: >>>>
Gary,
If I could add another note on Fr. Lommel I would like to..... When
Ray and I decided to get married back in 1992, Fr. Lommel was in Drayton
and because he married Ray's parents Ray and Lucille Charlton and he
married my parents Mat and Jennie Jansen we were hoping he would marry
us to... he was happy to talk to us and then we told him we would like
him to marry us in Las Vegas... well he cleared his calendar and we flew
him to LV to marry us.. He so nicely booked the cathedral with his
friend Fr. White, got an organist to play wedding music for us and a
soloist to sing for us... He made our wedding so special and
beautiful.... Oh yes on the plane we were to refer to him as George the
garbage man... He was so full of humor... He has always been a
special person in our lives....
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Gloria. Apparently Fr. Lommel
was a man of many professions. I remember Father telling me once, that
on one particular visit to an Early American Monetary Distribution
Center he told a lady sitting next to him that he was a retired rest
room attendant.
student of the world of sports. I have trouble remembering how many
periods in a baseball game or why they call one shot a "free throw" when
they don't charge for any of the rest of them anyway.
Anyhow. Judging by some of the comments I'm hearing when consuming my
daily ration of caffeine. I am lead to believe that there is a faction
of folks out there that do not believe a college in a state with less
people than most suburbs have, should be participating in what is
referred to as, division 1 sports.
I'll be darned if I know the best answer to that. Except to say, from
my prospective, the UND (University of North Dakota) probably has to go
to division 1 simply to keep abreast with "our" Spoilers hockey program.
After all, if "our" grade school hockey players can travel several
thousand miles a year just to play grade school hockey. Obviously, then
it must make sense for a whole bunch of collegiate hockey players who
are getting their college education paid for by scholarships to travel
all over the United States just to skate in states most of us have never
even been to.
Or so it seems to me.
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
----------------------------
Seeing helicopters flying over Grafton, is not all that unusual.
However,... seeing a helicopter installing air conditioners on the top
of a building, is. Late friday afternoon, many local residence watched
as a helicopter installed several air conditioners on the roof of the
Marvins Windows and Doors facilities on the west edge of Grafton. It's
my understand that the work the helicopter was called in to participate
in is part of the expansion project Marvins is doing to their Grafton
Facility.
Have I mentioned? If your planning on refurbishing your home, or
building a new one, request Marvins Windows and Doors. You will be
pleased you did,.... and so will several thousand families in northern
North Dakota and Minnesota.
----------------------------
Taken from page 4 of the Norwegian safe driving manual..... It is the
responsibility of the person driving, to take advantage of all possible
information from all of his passengers, and then do what he believes is
in the best interest of his vehicle..... If,... on the other hand, the
driver should get stuck. It is the responsibility of his passengers to
"dig him out".
------------------------------
Rumor has it there is something going on north of town today
(Saturday). I know it has something to do with snowcats because a couple
of snowcaters stopped in Granny's for breakfast an said that they were
"in the races today". When I mentioned that to a couple other folks in
town they indicated to me that they didn't know that anything was going
on in town this Saturday either.
So, my question is. How can that be? Another question might be. Why
doesn't every single business place in Grafton include those facts in
every single one of their advertisements preceding such events? There
isn't even any mention of the snow mobile races on the Chamber of
Commerce Sign on the corner by the Chamber Office. I find it somewhat
ironic that "our" local TV channel three can advertise such things as
bingo and bowling events that take place every single week all year
long, yet not one mention of an event that could draw several hundred
people to "our" community.
On the other hand, maybe the folks that are involved with the
snowmobile races don't want anyone else to know about it. It just might
be that it's to dangerous for local spectators or something.
If so, then please disregard this message.
Speaking of local business. Eric would like to share the following
message. >>>
Hello,
This is Erick from the Alltel Agent here in Grafton. I just
wanted to let you know that starting January 5th 2009, we will be
located at a new location less than a block south on Griggs of the Post
Office here in Grafton and just a block west of Hill Ave on 6th or in
short terms, corner of 6th and Griggs.
Coming from a small town of 300, we are big proponents of the
development of downtown. With the recent additions of Country
Smokehouse, Curves, and Rick's Repair, among others. As well as the
refacing and remodelling of B & D flooring and Grafton True Value, we
have alot of respect for downtown Grafton. We have been waiting for
the perfect place to become open and present itself to us and we
believe we have found it. In addition to selling Alltel service
and phones, as well as Accessories for almost all Alltel and Verizon
phones, in the last few months we have become a large seller of used and
refurbished phones both locally and online, we are also offering Cell
Phone Repair for select makes and models. We believe this location
will satisfy everything we need to carry out our different divisions as
well as to better serve the customer. We appreciate all the support
the community has given us the last few years and we look forward to
serving the community for years to come. Also, if you have any
questions regarding the Verizon/Alltel merger, please feel free to
contact me. In North Dakota/South Dakota/NW Minnesota as well as
approx another 100 plus markets in the US, Alltel will not be merging
with Verizon.
Thank You,
Erick Soltvedt <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Rick.
And thank you for your vote of confidence in the Grafton community.
Another way folks might find your business easily is simply to look for
the giant microwave tower directly above your downtown location.
I could be mistaken, however I believe the "Tower Building" will soon
become the new home of yet another new Grafton business.
Raymond Capouch, 86 died Dec. 23, 2008 at Innovis Health in Fargo. Ray
spent most of his adult life in Grafton as a butcher. I'll always
remember Ray and June (McDermaid) Capouch as always appearing to enjoy
life. June, as I remember best, loved to bowl and she sold Sarah
Coventry Jewelry. The fact that they raised a fantastic family of 6 boys
and 6 girls indicates to me that they not only enjoyed their work, they
most certainly enjoyed their family, and each other as well.
Those fortunate enough to know Ray and June will remember Rays smile
was as wide as he was tall, and Junes laughter could brighten even the
darkest of days.
Ray has gone on to be with June again and together they have left this
world a much better place.
Pat and I and our family, would like to extend our most sincere
condolences to the Capouch family.
the parish home to perform our duties to count the money. At about
that time Fr. Lommel came into the office and asked how we were
doing. That's when I asked him if it was alright if I would throw the
money up in the air and whatever the Lord takes is his and whatever
drops down I would keep. Father looked at me with that half crooked
smile of his and said, "I don't think so Tom".
I also would like to say something special to my family. When our
daughter Jackie (who helped count the money with me so many times)
passed away in 2001 and Father came to her wake with his walker and
ailing even then. That is so special to us and now they are probably
counting money in heaven.
pop and let my friends know that his basement was open to us. When I
was in college he used to call and take Maureen O'Keefe and I out for a
nice dinner just to talk. Father Lommel was a positive influence in my
life and I kept in touch through the years with him. He married me
and is one reason I am strong in my faith today. I'm sure he is
Caring and sharing is what makes the world worth living in. Retired
Roseau Dentist & pilot Dr. Bob Harris shared the following thoughts.
>>>> Gary, I feel very fortunate to be on the list for your Gazette,
even tho I am not a "Graftonite". I love those "pearls" that either
come from your fertile brain or from some research into the
literature. I remember being in Grafton in the mid 30's as a little
boy. My father's best man and my mother's matron of honor were Carl
and Agnes Dahlquist from Roseau. Soon after my folk's wedding they
moved to Grafton to manage a grocery store and we went over for a visit
(as I remember) to see how it was going for them. They subsequently
moved back to Roseau and remained best of friends until they went on to
a better place. We used to have a contingent of golfers from Roseau
that came over for a few of your "shortstop" golf tournaments in the
summers when I was mobile. Later on I spent some hours in your
community with varying levels of satisfaction as I was refereeing some
of your high school hockey games. I do have mostly fond memories of
those challenges.
We wish you a most healthy and HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Keep me on you
list (and don't spend all your time in the library)
Bob and Phyllis <<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Bob. I will
be looking forward to our coffee "chats" next summer at Arnesen's Rocky
Point, Rock Harbor Lodge.
---------------------------
Speaking of libraries, one doesn't really appreciate the value of one
til you eaten a pound of lobster and a half a pound of melted butter. I
have found the secret to successfully managing the emergency trips to
the library, is making sure there isn't anything laying around on the
floor, not locking any doors and having a copious supply of Mr.
Whipple's little white squares available. I'm guessing the folks a
Curves could incorporate a lobster and melted butter dinner in their
exercise program. I don't think the cost would matter much,... as it
would all come out in the end anyway.
Or so it seems to me.
Debbie wanted to share her memory of Fr. Lommel. She wrote: >>>> Hi
Gary,
Thank you for sharing Father Lommel's obituary with us. I can't think
of anyone that did more for us in Grafton. He was so good to us as
teenagers; he used to call me up and tell me to go and buy snacks and
pop and let my friends know that his basement was open to us. When I
was in college he used to call and take Maureen O'Keefe and I out for a
nice dinner just to talk. Father Lommel was a positive influence in my
life and I kept in touch through the years with him. He married me
and is one reason I am strong in my faith today. I'm sure he is
enjoying heaven as much as he enjoyed his life on earth. Thank you,
Father Lommel, for all you've done for others.
Caring and sharing is what makes the world worth living in. Retired
Roseau Dentist & pilot Dr. Bob Harris shared the following thoughts.
>>>> Gary, I feel very fortunate to be on the list for your Gazette,
even tho I am not a "Graftonite". I love those "pearls" that either
come from your fertile brain or from some research into the
literature. I remember being in Grafton in the mid 30's as a little
boy. My father's best man and my mother's matron of honor were Carl
and Agnes Dahlquist from Roseau. Soon after my folk's wedding they
moved to Grafton to manage a grocery store and we went over for a visit
(as I remember) to see how it was going for them. They subsequently
moved back to Roseau and remained best of friends until they went on to
a better place. We used to have a contingent of golfers from Roseau
that came over for a few of your "shortstop" golf tournaments in the
summers when I was mobile. Later on I spent some hours in your
community with varying levels of satisfaction as I was refereeing some
of your high school hockey games. I do have mostly fond memories of
those challenges.
We wish you a most healthy and HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Keep me on you
list (and don't spend all your time in the library)
Bob and Phyllis <<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Bob. I will
be looking forward to our coffee "chats" next summer at Arnesen's Rocky
Point, Rock Harbor Lodge.
---------------------------
Speaking of libraries, one doesn't really appreciate the value of one
til you eaten a pound of lobster and a half a pound of melted butter. I
have found the secret to successfully managing the emergency trips to
the library, is making sure there isn't anything laying around on the
floor, not locking any doors and having a copious supply of Mr.
Whipple's little white squares available. I'm guessing the folks a
Curves could incorporate a lobster and melted butter dinner in their
exercise program. I don't think the cost would matter much,... as it
would all come out in the end anyway.
Or so it seems to me.
My good friend Kermit from Gettysburg Pa. Shared the following. >>>
Minus 20 - feels like - 31?!!!! Are you staying in bed? and having
"kaffe paa sengs"? The norkie tradition of "(morning) coffee in bed
tradition.
HAPPY NEW YEAR....ENJOY THE DAY!! WINDY here, but sunshiney and "cold".
I have my coffee at Granny's, my cookies at home and, unfortunately,
there isn't a single piece of lefse in sight.
I think I mentioned that I "probably" wouldn't be sending out another
for two reasons actually. First, to share Fr. Lommel's obituary along
with a few of the comments I have received upon his death.
The second reason is to share a message sent by Cindy Shininger about
a 23 year old girl that died in a automobile accident.
Kathee wrote: I am saddened to receive the news of the death of Fr.
keep his tobacco can in my purse. It seemed an odd request, but how
could I refuse?
Can you image all his former parishioners fussing over him upon his
arrival in heaven?
Then Cindy shared the following message which I believe has a very
special meaning for all of us.
Hi Gary,
Happy New Year to you and your family. The boys were on the road, I
believe, by 6 this a.m. cookies and computer in tow. Hopefully we didn't
forget anything important since we were to worried about cookies! Off
that note, I attended a funeral of a young 23 year old girl yesterday.
(She died from an auto accident.) At the cemetery the pastor read "The
Dash". It was right to the point for the hundreds of people there who
witnessed her parents bury their child. She lived a great and full
filling life in the short time she was here. I can only hope all the
young kids take that poem to heart. Life may be short, so live it to the
fullest and with dignity and honesty. Have a good visit and the guys
expect to be there around 11a.m. New Years Day.
Fr. George Lommel
(September 17, 1920 - December 30, 2008)
Fr. George Lommel, 88, of Grafton, North Dakota died Tuesday, December
30, 2008 at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 7, 2008 at
St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Grafton. Interment will be in
the Calvary Cemetery in Lidgerwood, North Dakota.
Visitation will be held at St. John's Church on Tuesday from 4:00 pm
until 5:00 pm with a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm. There will also be
visitation for two hours prior to the funeral at the church.
George Daniel Lommel was born September 17, 1920 in Lidgerwood, North
Dakota the first child of five born to Francis "Frank" and Margaret
(Lynch) Lommel. He was raised there graduating from Lidgerwood High
School in 1937. He then attended St. John's University in Collegeville,
MN and then went on to St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, CO. On June 1,
1946 he was ordained a Catholic Priest in Lidgerwood by then Bishop
Aloisius Muench. Over the years Father Lommel has had many assignments
in the Diocese of Fargo. In 1946 he served as a Temporary Substitute at
Sts. Peter and Paul's Parish in Mantador, ND and later that year he
served as the a Secretary in the Chancery Office in Fargo, ND until
August of 1947. He then began serving as the Assistant Pastor at St.
John's Parish in Wahpeton, ND. In July of 1951 he became Pastor of St.
Paul's Parish serving Tappen and Steele, ND and Our Lady of the Lake
Parish in Lake Williams, ND. With parishioners he built a new church in
Steele. He served there until 1959 when he was appointed to St.
Augustine's Parish in Fessenden, ND, where he was Pastor for ten years.
In 1969 he was appointed Pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish in
Grafton, ND where he served for fifteen years. In 1979 Fr. George was
selected "Outstanding Citizen" and presented with the Citizen
Achievement Award by the Grafton Chamber of Commerce. His next
assignment brought him to St. Edward's Parish in Drayton, ND and
Assumption Parish in Pembina in 1984. He served there until 1991 when he
became sole Pastor at Assumption Parish. Fr. Lommel was instrumental in
building the new St. Edward's Church while serving in Drayton. He
retired in 1995, just short of 50 years in active priesthood with the
Fargo Diocese. Over the years Father Lommel also served on the Board of
Consultors, Pastoral Council, Apostolic Council, Knights of Columbus
Chaplain, and Dean of Deanery 4. While serving his parishes as their
priest, Fr. Lommel also served in the National Guard as a Military
Chaplain for 27 years. In 1980 he retired from the National Guard with
the rank of Major. After his retirement he moved to Grafton and later
became a resident of the Lutheran Sunset Home.
Fr. George made many friends at every parish he served and spoke often
of the good people in his parish, especially the youth. He thoroughly
enjoyed his work as a Priest and also working as Chaplain to the "boys"
in the guard. He often gratefully thanked God for his good health which
enabled him to have so many good years. He had a great sense of humor,
was gifted with a good memory and loved to entertain his friends and
family. He enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing, good music, good
restaurants, and athletic events of all kinds; and was known to be
exceptionally lucky at horse races and casinos.
Fr. Lommel is survived by his sister, Mary Collins of Indianapolis, IN
and sister-in-law: Marjorie Lommel of Herman, MN. Many nieces, nephews
and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents;
brothers, Robert and John and sister, Rose Ellen Lavasseur.
Father Lommel's family would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to
all of his friends who have so graciously helped him throughout the
years; and to the staff at Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton for their
loving care. He will be missed by many, but welcomed by our Lord, and a
host of family and friends in heaven.
The Bilden Funeral Home of Northwood is assisting the family with
arrangements.
Gary, I'm reading about the Fox hunters. What is this, an actual
hunting party or what. Sounds like a fun time what ever.
I'm not sure if the ice is thick enough yet, but I'm getting antsy to
do some ice fishing here pretty quick. We get some nice Rainbows and
Brown trout out of a reservoir near here. Actually it's the only
place I know of where we can stretch the truth and get by with it. My
buddy says, man I sure missed a nice one, and my reply is, really, I
didn't see the rod bending, must have been the wind. I remember fishing
on the lakes back in Minnesota, didn't have a power auger, and it was an
hour job to get through 4 feet of ice, or even longer if you wanted to
fish out of your boat.
Getting plenty of snow, about 3 ft. in the last week. I say let it
snow at 7000 ft., let us alone here at 6000.
lyle <<<>>>>> HI GARY,
Man what an eye opener on the flood insurance cost to Grafton
residence and businesses... I don't know what the total paid out is in
Grafton although I'm sure it can be had very easily.
In Roseau Mn. it was $330,000.00 per year. Now.... the people that were
paying that, have that much to spend and pay their home taxes, etc. etc.
etc.
What is so sad about the whole thing is that we could have had it
(flood protection) for about one half of what the cost is today.
I can remember every flood for almost 80 years and anyone who
says we will not have a flood again is just a plan fool and a dreamer.
GARY, I remember so well in 1997 when we were filling sand bags
ourselves on the parking lot, the Mayor at that tie gave me a real piece
of her mind about getting our citizens exited about a flood. Well
my friend, it turned out to be the biggest flood we have ever had.
Except, wiser people told the city fathers we needed a dike and Grafton
was saved.
We almost got flooded from the east as the water was going over the
road that goes out to the Aasands home. However, Mike Houska was on the
job and saved us from a disaster.... Thanks Mike.
Thanks for making us aware of a disaster that we could see much
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
----------------------------
I hope the folks from Minnesota don't mistake our area for the
beautiful Big Sky Ski Resorts of the Montana Rockies as they pass
through Grafton on their way to the ski slopes.
---------------------
I understand Grand Forks has already surpassed it's previous historical
December snowfall amounts, and, we still have two snowy days left of
December.
----------------------
Please welcome Bill LaMont to our Gazette family.
The last time I can remember seeing Bill, was at the popcorn machine in
Ted Hoffman's Zelda Theater. Actually, we still have two theaters in
Grafton. Both of them are housed in the Strand theater building.
------------------------
By now I suppose everybody has heard that the level of the Park River
was the highest local folks can ever remember. That combined with
seemingly record snowfall, isn't in itself the end of the world.
Everyone knows it once rained for 40 days and 40 nights and that wasn't
the end of the world. Heck, that just gave some folks reason to buy
larger boats.
Anyway, I read Editor Todd Morgan's latest editorial in the Walsh
County Record and if that doesn't give our "city fathers" food for
thought, and plenty to wash it down with, absolutely nothing will.
According to Todd's editorial, Grafton is No.1 in flood insurance
premiums in the state when it comes to total dollars paid in flood
insurance. Todd goes on to say. "It's just not No.1 in flood insurance
premiums by a few thousand dollars either. In fact Grafton pays more in
flood insurance than all the rest of the cities in the state combined."
Todd then added. "Think about that --- it's awesome. total all the flood
insurance premiums paid in Fargo, Minot, Bismark, Mayville or any other
city you want to include and Grafton comes in at the big No.1 in total
dollars paid."
WOW,.... just think about it. Apparently all of the folks that were
elected to manage and protect the city of Grafton for the past half
century, or more. Obviously must have decided that God will send word to
Noah to take his wife, their three sons and their wives to Grafton in
plenty of time for them to build an Ark. AND,.. into which, a single
pair of every living thing in Grafton will go. And,... so it might be
written, the rest of us can go to Hell. Or so it seems to
me.
-------------------------------
Speaking of things going to ---- the devil. It seems like all, most, or
at the very least, many of our Gazette family members with a Polarcomm
e-mail address are not receiving it. I'm not sure what the problem is at
Polarcomm. They may be planning a merger with with Equatorcomm to comply
with Al Gores Global warming footprint.
At any rate, if you know of someone in the Polarcomm system and they
are wondering why the Gazette has been missing for the past several
days. Tell them it might be a Global warming problem, however, most
likely it's a Polar problem. I hope they can find and correct the
problem as soon as possible.
I can say this. I have dealt with the folks at Polar on several
different levels and have always found their organization to operate
with exceptional professionalism.
----------------------------
For those that may have wondered. Grafton truly is a Destination City.
If you don't believe me, you can believe Cindy.
Subject: Fox Hunters,
Good Morning Gary,
The boys will be on their way Wednesday am. Planning to arrive
Thursday around 11 am. As usual they will be staying at the Leonard
Motel, the Official Ohio Fox Hunters Motel. They are hoping to have 3
rooms, two adjoining and the third next door.
This year there will be 7, so I guess they will need a roll away also.
I have a big note to remind Bill of the cookies. So lets hope this
year we remember everything. Hope all is well there and a nice Holiday
was had by all.
Thanks a million for the update Cindy. We will be looking forward to
seeing the guys sometime Thursday. Rumor has it that there sure is a lot
of tracks in the snow. We also have a lot of snow but that's not a
rumor, it's a fact.
rapidly growing majestic mountains of snow.
The current temperature is 3 degrees.
The "feels like" temperature is -9
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 18/-6
Normal H/L temp for this date is 16/-3
It was 44 degrees on this date in 1904
It is hard to convince a man of global warming when he's shovelling
snow in minus 40 windchill temperatures with his nose running quicker
than he can lick it.
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
----------------------------
I hope the folks from Minnesota don't mistake our area for the
beautiful Big Sky Ski Resorts of the Montana Rockies as they pass
through Grafton on their way to the ski slopes.
---------------------
I understand Grand Forks has already surpassed it's previous historical
December snowfall amounts, and, we still have two snowy days left of
December.
----------------------
Please welcome Bill LaMont to our Gazette family.
The last time I can remember seeing Bill, was at the popcorn machine in
Ted Hoffman's Zelda Theater. Actually, we still have two theaters in
Grafton. Both of them are housed in the Strand theater building.
------------------------
By now I suppose everybody has heard that the level of the Park River
was the highest local folks can ever remember. That combined with
seemingly record snowfall, isn't in itself the end of the world.
Everyone knows it once rained for 40 days and 40 nights and that wasn't
the end of the world. Heck, that just gave some folks reason to buy
larger boats.
Anyway, I read Editor Todd Morgan's latest editorial in the Walsh
County Record and if that doesn't give our "city fathers" food for
thought, and plenty to wash it down with, absolutely nothing will.
According to Todd's editorial, Grafton is No.1 in flood insurance
premiums in the state when it comes to total dollars paid in flood
insurance. Todd goes on to say. "It's just not No.1 in flood insurance
premiums by a few thousand dollars either. In fact Grafton pays more in
flood insurance than all the rest of the cities in the state combined."
Todd then added. "Think about that --- it's awesome. total all the flood
insurance premiums paid in Fargo, Minot, Bismark, Mayville or any other
city you want to include and Grafton comes in at the big No.1 in total
dollars paid."
WOW,.... just think about it. Apparently all of the folks that were
elected to manage and protect the city of Grafton for the past half
century, or more. Obviously must have decided that God will send word to
Noah to take his wife, their three sons and their wives to Grafton in
plenty of time for them to build an Ark. AND,.. into which, a single
pair of every living thing in Grafton will go. And,... so it might be
written, the rest of us can go to Hell. Or so it seems to
me.
-------------------------------
Speaking of things going to ---- the devil. It seems like all, most, or
at the very least, many of our Gazette family members with a Polarcomm
e-mail address are not receiving it. I'm not sure what the problem is at
Polarcomm. They may be planning a merger with with Equatorcomm to comply
with Al Gores Global warming footprint.
At any rate, if you know of someone in the Polarcomm system and they
are wondering why the Gazette has been missing for the past several
days. Tell them it might be a Global warming problem, however, most
likely it's a Polar problem. I hope they can find and correct the
problem as soon as possible.
I can say this. I have dealt with the folks at Polar on several
different levels and have always found their organization to operate
with exceptional professionalism.
----------------------------
For those that may have wondered. Grafton truly is a Destination City.
If you don't believe me, you can believe Cindy.
Subject: Fox Hunters,
Good Morning Gary,
The boys will be on their way Wednesday am. Planning to arrive
Thursday around 11 am. As usual they will be staying at the Leonard
Motel, the Official Ohio Fox Hunters Motel. They are hoping to have 3
rooms, two adjoining and the third next door.
This year there will be 7, so I guess they will need a roll away also.
I have a big note to remind Bill of the cookies. So lets hope this
year we remember everything. Hope all is well there and a nice Holiday
was had by all.
December 29, 2008 - Monday
Todays Gazette is being brought to you by the National Weather Service.
They have issued a "winter weather advisory" until 10:00 am for our
area. They didn't say what season our weather would resemble after 10:00
am today, however, I am guessing it will not be summer.
---------------------------
The current temperature is 9 degrees.
The "feels like" temperature is -9
Yesterday H/L temperature was 17/-14
Normal H/L temp for this date is 16/-2
It was 49 degrees on this date in 1999
During the past few days we've received more snow than all the kids who
ever attended Chase School could roll up into a family of Snowfolks.
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-----------------------------
Much has happened since I sent out last Wednesdays Gazette.
The 24th was a good news bad news day for many of us in Grafton. We
(Pat & me) spent Christmas eve at Brad and Denise's home along with our
entire family. Two rows of shoes in the entrance to their hallway was a
good indication it would be a fun evening. There was 62 shoes, all lined
up, in the hallway and a pile of coats on the bed that almost reached
the ceiling. The kitchen counters and tables were packed full of all
kinds of delicious nutriments and as I sat down in a over stuffed chair,
it dawned on me that I too would be in the same condition soon.
To have my entire family,... my wife and my children, grandchildren and
great grand children all together on such a blessed night would make it
a glorious evening, and, a very special night.
I watched while the presents were opened that evening, and marvelled at
how everyone really did care. It was great seeing the wee ones tear open
their gifts and of course the hugs and squeezes were a highlight of the
night.
Oh yes, I know, the birth of The Christ Child truly is the "main"
reason for the season. However, caring and sharing it with those that
you love, is as close to the manger as I'll ever get.
For me being with my entire family,... and being able to celebrate
Christmas together, is a most wonderful experience.
----------------------------
Regrettably, members of the Aurel DeSautel family will remember this
Christmas as the one that the Lord called Aurel to his Heavenly Home.
Very early on the morning of this past Christmas Eve day, Aurel
DeSautel passed away at Grafton Unity Medical Center.
I've known Aurel most of my life. I have always considered him, "my
friend". I've worked with him and I have worked for him. We have shared
numerous good times together, and I guess some not so good times too.
Aurel and I have shared the same coffee table at Granny's for many
years. Often we would exchange our views "memories", of encounters and
events, relating to Leonard, a mutual "friend" and relative of ours.
Aurel was a very kind and gentle man. He was the kind of man who always
asked what he could for someone else, rather than what someone else
might do for him. Aurel played in the Grafton Parade Band as well as the
American Legion Clown Band, though I can assure you of one thing, Aurel
played in the Clown Band but he always took his music very seriously.
I will miss Aurel DeSautel, however, I will never forget him. Pat and I
with our family extend our most sincere condolences to Delores and the
entire DeSautel family
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
---------------------------
The date is December, 24th.
It is Christmas Eve Day and every year for more than fifty years on
this day I am reminded of one of the most important lessons my father
ever taught me. Over the years I have come to refer to that lesson as
"Dads Christmas lesson".
I first shared "Dad's Lessen" in the Gazette on Monday December 24,
2001 and since then it has become somewhat of a tradition,.... for me
>>>>
This is the morning when dad (Bill Moe) would start walking around
the
flower shop looking for three (3) of the best plants, vases, or what
ever else would make a nice Christmas gift. He would then put a "SOLD"
sign on them and put them in the back room. The flower shop was always
very busy the day before Christmas. 7 or 8 people working in the shop
and 2 or 3 in the greenhouse with the trees and roping and 3 or 4 cars
delivering both in town as well as all of the surrounding towns within
70+ miles of Grafton.
No matter how busy dad was, he never ever forgot to put away those
three (3) "gifts".
After the gifts were secure. He would sit down (dad was paralyzed)
and make two phone calls. One to the Catholic Priest (Father Garland)
and the other to the minister of the Grafton Lutheran Church. I
overheard one of his conversations. It went kind of like this. Yes
Reverend Megorden, this is Bill. What have you got for me? Then dad
would start writing and every couple seconds or so he would grunt-auh
ha. The total call was about three minutes long. Then, as I left to go
delivering he was dialing the Catholic Church number.
After dads calls whoever was delivering in town would have to
deliver an envelope to each of the two Churches. I had watched
this process go on for several years and finally one day I had to ask
dad. Why the heck (I may have used a stronger word) do you do this every
year.
I think that day was when I not only learned the real
meaning of Christmas. It was the day I "felt", in my heart, the real
meaning of Christmas.
Dad answered, "well you see son. There are a lot of folks in
town with much less than us. They try with everything they have to
celebrate Christmas. They worship the Lord, they are kind to their
neighbors, but they just can't quite come up with the money to buy their
children gifts and provide a good Christmas dinner." Soo, he continued,
"thats, what those envelopes are all about." The three (3) gifts
in the back room? Well dad said. "You see Gary, on the night before
Christmas, after all of the stores uptown have sold most of their good
presents and closed. We always have three (3) guys come in." Worrying
like the dickens and each one saying. What have you got for my wife
Bill? Dad always said those fellows had a little to much egg-nog. I can
tell you the honest fact was, they were drunk. ANYWAY, dad would go in
the back room and bring them out some of the nicest "presents" we had in
the shop.
When I asked dad why he would go through all that trouble for
three "drunks".
Dad simply shrugged his shoulders and said, "but their wives
aren't"......
THANKS DAD, for teaching me the REAL MEANING OF CHRISTMAS.
FROM PAT AND I, AND ALL OF OURS.
M E R R Y C H R I S T M A S
and a Happy New Year.
---------------------------------
Speaking of caring and sharing, especially during this very special
season. I was asked if I might include the following message in the
Gazette. My answer of course was a resounding YES!
The message; >>>>
The Grafton High School Key Club and Student council are establishing a
Ronnie Fellman Memorial Scholarship. The goal is to raise a $5,000
perpetual scholarship and pay out the interest as a yearly scholarship.
If individuals or businesses are interested in donating to the fund
please contact Mr. Jack Maus, Mrs. Marilou Green or Mr. Darren Albrecht
at 701-352-1930.
Thank you. <<<<
Now then, that is the message from them. I would like to remind
everyone that 17 year old Ronnie Fellman left our school system, our
community and our world a significantly better place to live. Ronnie
showed everyone that ever met him, even those who had only heard of him,
the true meaning courage. Ronnie never asked for anything special in
life, except for the chance to participate in it.
Ronnie Fellman was a average 17 year old boy from a average small town
family yet his legacy leaves us with a wealth of courage and positive
attitude that no amount of money could buy.
If you can, please consider helping the Grafton High School Key Club
and Student council establish a Ronnie Fellman Memorial Scholarship.
Folks can bring, or, send donations to the High school. Please make
checks payable to the Ronnie Fellman Scholarship fund.
Wouldn't it be wonderful, and it certainly is a possible, if someone
would send in a check for the whole darn works?
