The forecast for Christmas day, as always, calls for "peace on earth
good will toward man". Fortunately, many folks around the world continue
to strive for the Christchild's dream. Unfortunately, we have yet to
achieve His goal.

With only "3 sleeps" til Christmas, it's time to take out your list and
start checking it twice. I know,... some folks will want to remind us of
the "REAL" reason for the season. AND,.. to them I would say. "Please
remember, it was the three kings from the Orient that came bearing gifts
on the very first Christmas day.
Anyway, I received the following note from Kalispell, Mt. >>>>>
Where can I get the Grafton Bucks? Are Grafton Bucks good at Granny's?
My dad is definitely a regular there! Thanks! I always enjoy the
Gazette!
Cheri Nelson <<<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Cheri. I
checked with our local Chamber and this was their response. >>>>
Subject: Re: Grafton Bucks
Good morning Gary,
Grafton Bucks can be purchased at the Chamber. They are in $2.00
increments and are redeemable at any area business. If there are any
questions, they can call the Chamber at (701) 352-0781. Thank you for
the inquiry. Have A Happy Holidays and stay warm.
Barb <<<< Thanks a million Barb. The Happy Holiday part, will be easy.
The staying warm part, will be a bit more of a challenge.
Anyway, the Grafton Bucks idea certainly is a good one. It is a
fantastic method of sharing and caring, for those of you living a long
way away. One size fits all, and,.. they come in everyones favorite
color, "dollar bill green".

THE CHART ROOM
A TRIBUTE
TO SCOUTS OF THE PAST
A CHALLENGE
TO SCOUTS OF TODAY
FEB, 10 1943
17th ANNIVERSARY
-----------------------------
It is a special time of the year, a time to be thankful for all that
are here. It's also a time to reflect and remember, that it was He who
was born giving us a truly special reason for the season.
I've shared the following words several times over the years. They have
a special meaning for me and I hope you might find a bit of solace in
them as well.
~~~~~~~~ Remember those ~~~~~~~~
Remember, those that are not here.
The ones, we have all held so dear.
Remember, even though they're gone,
their wish for us,.... life must go on. Remember those
that taught us well,
and picked us up each time we fell.
Remember Christ, this Christmas day,
sent by the Father, to light the way. Remember we're all
here for a reason,
to love one and all, this Holiday Season.
They're simple words that say so much.
They help us remember those we've loved so much.
So as we pray this Christmas day, for health and wealth and wisdom.
Lets not forget His goal for us, is to meet again in His Holy Kingdom.
~~~ THANK YOU WALLY & IONE ~~~
Pat and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Wally and Ione
DeSautel for allowing us to share such a fabulous day. Wally & Ione
invited Pat and me, along with several dozen family members and friends,
to attend the Lorie Line, Christmas Around the World Concert at the
Chester Fritz in Grand Forks Sunday afternoon.
A warm and comfortable MCI bus picked us up at Wally & Ione's home in
Grafton and dropped us off at the front door of the Chester Fritz
Auditorium. After the "out of this world concert" we boarded the bus and
then taken over to eat dinner.
Before we started eating, Wally stood up and "thanked us" for coming.
Next we sang three patriotic songs and then Pastor Moe said "the words"
before dinner. Then we boarded the bus for our short journey home. I
just couldn't help thinking as I looked at Wally & Ione in the front row
of the bus, that there sits a man and his wife, having both worked very
hard all their life. Yet even tho' now when it would be just as easy
not, they continue their caring and sharing a lot.
Thanks a million Wally & Ione from Pat and me. Thanks for a wonderful
day and a fantastic way to share a really magnificent reason for this
magical season.

With a saddened heart I share Nancy's message of the passing of Nora
(Mrs Walt) Jorgensen.
Nancy Fletcher wrote: >>>>
With great sadness (and relief because her struggle is over), my
brother and I want you to know that Nora died peacefully this morning at
12:20 a.m.
Nora Elizabeth Jorgensen, a fiery wife, mother, and business woman,
died in Grand Junction, CO on Dec. 21 of dementia.
Walter Jorgensen, her son, said she died in the loving care of her
daughter, Nancy Fletcher, and the case managers of Alpine Hospice.
Nora Elizabeth Jacobson was born May 23, 1919 in Duluth, MN to David
and Alina Jacobson and was raised in Wawina, MN. Her early life included
work at Hill Mercantile and the First State Bank, both in Floodwood, MN.
She married Ralph Jarvi and her first child, Joan Ellen Jarvi, was born.
She later met the love of her life, Walter Jorgensen, and they were
married in 1947 and had two children. In 1958 they bought the Basell
Hotel & Bar in Grafton, ND, and the family lived there until Nora and
Walt retired to northern Minnesota in 1972.
Walt and Nora had happy years together after their retirement until
Walt died in 1989 of congestive heart failure. Nora spent the next
fifteen years in Minneapolis, MN., before moving to assisted living in
Grand Junction, CO. in 1995 when her dementia developed.
One of life's biggest pleasures for Nora was time spent at her Red
Lake cabin in northern Minnesota. She loved to fish, play cards, and
cheer on the Twins and Vikings. She always enjoyed entertaining friends
with good food and drink. She always said, "Life is great; you just
can't weaken."
Survivors include her son, Walter Jorgensen, the owner of Palisade
Pharmacy in Palisade, CO; her daughter, Nancy Fletcher, the president of
OAAA in Washington, DC; nine grand children, nine great-grandchildren,
and one great-great grandson Marcus Moe. Her daughter, Joan Moe of
Grafton, ND, died at 46 from complications to lupus.
Arrangements are being handled by Callahan Edfast Funeral Home in
Grand Junction, CO. A celebration of her life is planned in June at
Pelican Lake in northern Minnesota after burial next to her husband in
Buhl, MN.
Donations may be sent to Alpine Hospice, 602 Jackson Street, Clifton,
CO 81520. <<<

Even though last weekends storm wasn't as severe as forecasted, it did
leave a significant amount of snowman parts all over town. Most
intersections had snowcat dust drifts deep enough to raise local wrecker
revenues by double digits.
Our street maintenance crews started plowing streets at 2:00 am Monday
morning and all of the major streets and avenues were bladed, loaded up
and the snow hauled to the snow field. With very few exceptions, almost
all sidewalks adjoining local business establishments were also cleaned
up early Monday morning as well. Almost that is,... with the exception
of the sailboat fuel storage facilities presently owned and operated by
the city of Grafton.
Ironically, our community spends 10's of thousands of dollars a year
plowing, cleaning and hauling snow away from city streets with a
professionalism unequalled by any community in the nation.
Unfortunately, such perfection merely affords most folks the ability to
utilize those clean swept streets to get out of town without getting
stuck.
Especially in this day an age, very few folks, if any will park along
side a snowdrift that they must climb over to go shopping. It just
doesn't happen. If a community has committed itself to keeping it's
roads and thoroughfares clean and serviceable, as I truly believe
Grafton has. Then every sidewalk in the business district should be
maintained accordingly. No doing so simply defeats the purpose.
Or so it seems to me.

I stopped at Grafton Drug Thursday afternoon to pickup a new heating
pad. With the advent of cooler weather I have acquired some "stiff
joints" that I can't seem to find a good use for. Hence,.. I'm hoping
the heating pad will resolve that issue.
Anyway, while picking up the heating pad, I grabbed a copy of the Park
River Walsh County PRESS, it's their 127th year in print, and brought it
home. I must say, "I was very impressed".
I found much of the content in the PRESS interesting and easy to read.
Since I am half Norwegian I was also pleased the PRESS features a
significant number of pictures along with the articles.
For instance, when I turned to the back page of the PRESS, I saw a
picture, that for a moment, I thought looked just like Lorraine LaBonte.
If it was, I thought, maybe it had been take several years ago when she
was one of my nurses while I was recovering from a surgery performed by
Dr. Eaton.
I have stated several times, in previous Gazettes, two of my favorite
nurses ever was Lorraine LaBonte and Dorothy Wilson. Why I wondered,
before reading the article, would there be a picture of Lorraine Labonte
(especially as a young girl) in the Walsh County PRESS?
Then,... I read the article. Heck it wasn't Lorraine at all it was
Lorraines granddaughter, Air National Guard Airman 1st class Rachael A.
LaBonte. The article went on to explain that Rachael had graduated from
basic military training. Rachael is the daughter of Mike LaBonte of
Harmony Heights Lane, Rapid City SD.
Thank God I can still read a little bit, or I might have been running
around asking everyone why the PRESS but Lorraines High School
graduation picture in the paper. CONGRATULATIONS, Rachael
ANYWAY, not that it's really,.. really important. I did notice that
the PRESS used 33 pictures in this weeks edition, while The Record used
18. Then again who's counting?

Speaking of pretty girls, today is the day our granddaughter Krystal

Except for the hustle and bustle of local holiday shopping, it's
difficult to find much going on in Shivercity.
I understand the last of the remaining camper trailers will be pulling
out of the Leistikow Park Campground today or tomorrow. Rumor has it,
the remaining pipeline workers will be going home for the holidays and
will return to the area in a couple weeks to continue working on the
line.
It certainly has been wonderful having our campground at full occupancy
all summer. Even better than that is all of the improvements the
campground received this past summer.

I'm guessing folks are still trying to "digest" the Grafton neon sign
issue and what might be the best direction for it's resolve.
Paul DeSautel shared his memories of The Sign while it was stored in
the City Hall. He wrote: >>> Re: The "sign"
I kinda remember it in the City Hall basement leaning against the

many years ago that could have been or when, if ever, it was up! There
were a lot of mystical things in that basement.

you, or someone remembers seeing any of the "parking meters" once used

Gary, your comments on the trains brought back some precious memories.
All the neighborhood kids used to watch the very long trains hauling
airplanes (with the wings off), tanks, trucks, artillery on open
cars. There were armed guards on them and passenger cars with troops.
This was on the Northern Pacific going through the east set of tracks
shipping to Canada.
On the Great Northern I never saw military equipment but us
Overland boys and the LeQuires used to take our burlap bags (gunny
sacks) and pick up coal spilled from the train along the tracks. We
would go just as the trains were filling on water at the big tank
because that was when the fireman would also shovel in more coal.
Sometimes he would see us waiting with our sacks and he'd throw throw a
couple shove fulls between the cars.
Those were tough days, and, in those days "oil" was not the only
"Black Gold".
Another interesting thing, One day In Seattle I went for lunch at a
restaurant featuring railroad memorabilia and lo and behold there was a
painting of the old Great Northern depot in Grafton North Dakota
looking from the south to north along the tracks and it had Grafton
right on it. <<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Bert.

While I was doing a some "research" in the Gazette library the other
day I got to thinking about how our economy has gone down the crapper
lately (pardon the pun). I thought about how folks used to make a
concerted effort, to do business with folks that done business with
them.
--- That's NOT the case with the Fargo Perkins Restaurant by the way.
Just yesterday I noticed they are still using
sugarcane sugar just a few miles away from the corporate headquarters of
the largest beet sugar company in the country. ---
Anyway, I started thinking about the early days of the Walmart
dynasty...... Does anyone remember the ads of the mid to late sixties
showing Sam Walton driving to work in his old Chevrolet pickup with his
brown bag lunch on the seat? Does anyone remember Sam and later on his
executive staff say, "we only buy American products to sell to the
American public"? I DO! Can anyone possibly believe, in your wildest
imagination, the miniscule amount of American products Walmart actually
handles today. I CAN'T.

The Grafton Drug store has been closed since the night of the big
storm. I'm not really sure why. I expect we'll read all about it in the
Walsh County Record.
Rumor has it, someone broke in through the north door and, adding
insult to injury, bitter cold temperatures driven by high winds entered
the building about the same time the bandits did. I haven't heard what,
if anything left the store with the bandits. I understand when the
bitter cold finally left the building it left some frozen water pipes,
among other things, behind.
The drug store was closed for a period of time, however, the Grafton
Drug Store IS once AGAIN,... "OPEN for BUSINESS"

The mention of Mattson Refrigeration Service gave Kathee reason to
write the following. >>>>
Your reference to Kelvinator brought to mind a story about my
grandfather, Axel "Dad" Carlson (1877-1959), shoeman at Reyleck's.
Grandma and Grandpa Carlson never had an ice box. They used the cellar
to keep things cool and relied on getting to the grocery store often
enough to get fresh items. When they decided to get a refrigerator after
they came out, they were uncertain of which brand to get. Family lore
has it that Grandpa Carlson went to the president of some electric
company in which he had stock and asked what the president recommended.
"Kelvinator, " said the president. So that is the brand that they got.

We are getting closer to solving the large Grafton neon sign question
posed by Charles Stewart the other day. Ann McCann shared the following.
>>>>
Hi Gary, Reading your news for today, you asked if anyone has seen the
neon sign that hung across the street. Yes, it is in the basement of
city hall or last I saw it a few years ago.
Lee Kieley and Donny LaBerge wanted to resurrect it for something
to keep them busy. All three of us went and looked at it. It was black
with red letters. Some neon was broken. ( New neon is brighter than
old and the reds would not match TODAYS. ) One would need to replace
ALL of the letters.
City Hall was not interested in investing the money to have this done.
Yes, I agree it would be nice sign memorabilia and part of
Grafton's history. I just love signs, you know!

wrote: >>>>> Dad, When I joined the fire dept. I remember seeing the
neon sign you wrote about hanging in the basement of city hall. However,
I believe It was moved from there to the old A&H building on the north
end of town. <<<< Thanks Jeff, I think you have it right. Tuesday
afternoon, former mayor Fred Stark not only bought us coffee at

feet long and a couple of feet high, was in fact moved to the former A&H

The terms "Green Movement" and "global warming" always seem to generate
a heated discussion. A former Grafton Mayor and the husband of my
brother-in-law Chuck Demesters daughter chiseled enough time out of his
busy schedule to share the following thoughts.
Jeff wrote; >>>>
Hi Gary! Thought I'd join the discussion on "Global Warming" and
"going green". Yesterday you mentioned our inability to control the
mother nature to which I agree. But do we need to add to our own demise?
The problem as I see it (my opinion) is we, as a society, get awful
short sighted. "We", ME included, tend to focus on today and are driven
by consumption of whatever it may be...gas, water, consumer goods and
services and, instant gratification. Use more, buy more, waste more, and
who cares. I think we all need to think green, not only for ourselves
but for our kids, grand kids and great grand kids. Starting now, however
small, is a step in the right direction. I have the privileged of
serving a community of Seniors in Fargo. There are 180 men and women
who's average age is 87 years old. They are continuing to worry about
shutting off lights, recycling, turning down their heat in the winter,
some even shut their air conditioners off in the summers when the are
out for the afternoon. I would guess a great number came through the
depression era. The American Indian held great respect for "Mother
Earth". Maybe, just maybe "Big Al" is on to something! Or so it seem to
me... To know what is right and to do nothing is ...... Thanks for

your not overly surprised to find that I agree with absolutely
everything you said........ Except, I take some issue with the "maybe"
big Al is on to something. I find it extremely difficult to believe big
Al was entitled to the Heisman trophy because he found the station a
football game was played on. Nor, do I believe he should have gotten a
Silver Broom because he "discovered" a curling rink in his neighborhood.
And, it goes without saying that he is not entitled to the Silver Cup
simply because he read about the outcome of a hockey game.
The globe IS warming, that's not the issue. And, we definitely should
do everything "within reason" and within the realm of our individual
control to minimize our impact on global warming.
However, in my opinion, no-one needs even two "normal" size homes, yet
Mr. Gore has several mansions. No-one needs to fly by private Jet
although Al Gore does. Folks like Al Gore and his multi-millionaire
cronies, as well as major corporations like General Electric, justify
"covering" their carbon footprints by buying, carbon credits, with their
untold wealth. Then, they look at regular folks (like me) and say. "Give
a hoot, don't pollute".
That, in my opinion, is the height of arrogance and hypocrisy.
Putting it another way. I think what the Al Gores of the world are
doing with their global warming "panic attack" is very little different
than George Bush leading us into a war "without" weapons of mass
destruction.
Oops, did I mention that I "almost" totally agree with Jeff's
assesment of the worlds dilemma? The only thing I disagree with, is the
wealthy will continue to be so, and they will not shed one lonely bead
of sweat in the process. Everyone lesser than rich,...... most certainly
will.

Charles Stewart called yesterday and informed me of the possible
existence of a large sign that spanned hiway 17 in the general area of
Mac's Bottle shop and Simonsons brand new (when completed) Subway
Sandwich shop. Charles remembers the "Grafton" sign was constructed with
red neon letters, large enough so that they could be seen from as far
away as hiway 44 approximately 10 miles east of Grafton.
It is Charles understanding that the sign may, in fact, still be stored
in one of Graftons Electrical department buildings. If so, it seems to
me, a more logical home for such a valuable relic might be in Grafton's
Heritage Village collection of interesting area memorabilia.
In fact, it might even lend itself to becoming a very interesting
exhibit in and of itself. Question; Does anyone remember ever seeing
such a sign. Either at the time it welcomed visitors to Grafton, or,
maybe while it was being stored in the City Hall building or later when
it found it's way into some other city building?
Any information anyone can share would be very much appreciated.

With low temperatures in the double digits,... below zero. The hottest
topic at coffee is all about Al Gores "panic pitch" on global warming.
Of course the globe is warming. The Great Lakes is massive proof of
that. The real irony, as I see it anyway, is that "we" (citizens of the
United States) actually believe we (Americans) can control the fantastic
forces of nature.
"We" have spend 100 of billions of dollars trying to convince a few
nations that they should live and believe as we do. History has proven
numerous other civilizations have tried doing the very same thing and
they failed,.... too.

Gary -
Your recent reference to Al Gore and the global warming
created by Washingtons Bovine Defecation reminded me of an old Charlie
Brown cartoon by Charles Schultz - "Doing a good job around here is
like wetting your pants in a dark colored suit; It gives you a nice warm
feeling but nobody notices"! Keep up the good work - Keith
Mohagen <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Keith. If you get a chance to
talk to one of the folks from the "Green" Movement. Please remind them
that almost anyplace they drive, they are driving on roads built with
"fossil fuels". The last time I checked. We / they haven't been able to
come up with a way to build hiways and byways with windmills or solar
panels.

Gary,
It's nice to get your newsletter every day, like a lot of people I
look forward to reading what's happening up in your neck of the
woods. My home town of Warren is close enough to Grafton that it's
almost like hearing from home.
Not much snow here in Sun Valley, Id. but with the 2-3 inches of
real snow and snowmaking equipment on the mountain, it finally got
open to the skiers. We not only need the snow for recreation, but the
farmers down below need the water they get from us. We are in need of
5-6 good snow years to get things back to normal. I don't know if Gore
has control of the weather, but he sure has the public running
scared. I wonder how much he has made to line his pocket book
with his nonsense. I like your description of him, fits him
perfectly.
I looked at some old Gazette articles from last summer, you were
getting the combine ready in may. We are coming to Warren next summer
for my 50 yr. class reunion, maybe I'll have to come and snag a few with
you at the lake.
Have a Merry Christmas, and may the Lord Bless you and your family.
lyle <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Lyle. I must share with "our"
group that I met Lyle and his lovely wife Janet a couple of years ago
while they were enjoying a stay at Arnesen's Rocky Point Resort.
Although we only spent a relatively short time together, Lyle's note is
absolute proof that it only takes a few minutes at Rocky Point to build
a lasting relationship.
Please tell Ray Burwell Hi from Pat and Gary when you get back to
Warren. I will be looking forward to seeing you at Arnesen's Rocky Point
this summer. AND, Lyle, I can absolutely guarantee the fishing WILL be
fantastic. I am just as positive that you will enjoy yourself.
Unfortunately,..... I can't be quite as categorical about the catching.
Speaking of fishing, it's not to late to book your ice fishing trip at
Arnesen's Rocky Point Resort and Rock Harbor Lodge. Check out their new
web site at arnesens.com someone said they even have a picture or two of
me in there too.

History has proven
numerous other civilizations have tried doing the very same thing and
they failed,.... too.

Evidently Keith has formulated his own colorful opinion of all things
melting. >>>
Gary -
Your recent reference to Al Gore and the global warming
created by Washingtons Bovine Defecation reminded me of an old Charlie
Brown cartoon by Charles Schultz - "Doing a good job around here is
like wetting your pants in a dark colored suit; It gives you a nice warm
feeling but nobody notices"! Keep up the good work - Keith
Mohagen <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Keith. If you get a chance to
talk to one of the folks from the "Green" Movement. Please remind them
that almost anyplace they drive, they are driving on roads built with
"fossil fuels". The last time I checked. We / they haven't been able to
come up with a way to build hiways and byways with windmills or solar
panels.

Lyle Anderson, writing from the great state of Idaho, shared the
following. I understand rumor has it that the potatoes grown in Idaho
are second, only, to those grown in the Red River Valley of the North.

Gary,
It's nice to get your newsletter every day, like a lot of people I
look forward to reading what's happening up in your neck of the

December 15, 2008 - Monday
Todays Gazette comes with sincere thanks and appreciation of all the
great folks in Grafton's Municipal Utilities.

Looking out my window this morning I see bright sunshine in a perfectly
clear sky. Except for the fact that Sami's "P-tree" is 88 degrees colder
than his favorite spot on the hassock in front of the television, it is
pretty nice outside.
Even though some folks say this weekend's blizzard was one of the worst
in a decade. I doubt anyone from our City Hall will be calling
Washington for help from the folks at Fema.
As a matter of fact. Shortly after most of us went to bed last night.
The folks from Grafton's Municipal Utilities Department were just going
to work. By the time most of us woke up this morning, the GMU's crew had
already plowed and hauled away the snowcat dust from downtowns main
street's as well as both Hiway's. Hiway 17 east & west and hiway 81 the
runs thru town north and south.
I wonder if Chris Mathews from MSNBC will broadcast that fact all over
the country. Anyway,... it won't be long and our GMU crew will have the
entire town cleaned up and ready for the next snowfall event. That
is,.... everything except those areas where cars are parked on the
street hampering the snow removal process.
I continue to find it ironic that the folks living in the large
apartment house across the street are allowed to park their vehicles on
the street making it next to impossible for the street department to do
their job. Especially in light of the fact that there are numerous
garage stalls and an even a larger number of empty spaces in the paved
parking lot.

December 13, 2008 - Saturday
Todays Gazette is brought to just hours prior to the first serious
blizzard warning forecasted so far this winter season.
-------------------------
The current temperature is 8 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 16/-6
Normal H/L temp for this date is 21/3
It was 52 degrees on this date in 1913.
We could get 4 to 6 inches of snowcat dust by Monday morning. If the 40

Frosty's ears.

Richard and Elaine Thompson returned home Wednesday, for the Christmas
holidays, from their Floridian winter residence. Judging by the shadow
Richard casts over Granny's coffee table, his recliner in the sunshine
state must be relatively close to the refrigerator. Speaking of sunshine
and shadows, if the tan line around Richards short sleeved shirt is any
indication. Richard is either spending a lot of time in the sun, or, he
has installed a sun lamp in his refrigerator.
-----------------------------
Speaking of sunshine heat and cold. I noticed yesterday that the
furnace is still running in the former Getz Drug Store building. I guess
we don't want the sailboat fuel in there to get to cold.

This is the Saturday that the Salvation Army folks stop by Granny's so
we can help them help so many others. For many years, on this day, I
looked forward to Gordy Stark walking into Granny's ringing his bell and
saying, "alright fellows, open up your billfolds, it's that time of the
year again."
Rod Alme took over when Gordy was called to work the giant kettle in
heaven. This morning, as has been the case for so many years. Granny's
door opened up and that familiar "ring" preceded Joe Dusek. As Joe
approached our table with a warm "okay guys, it's that time of the year
again and please don't be tight." (or something like that.) And,... we
weren't, and,... I think Gordy would be proud too.
------------------------------
To me at least, it certainly looks like our local retail stores are
much busier than normal. I'm not sure if it's the higher price of gas, a
much better selection of items to choose from, or, finally plain old
common sense kicking in. Whatever it is, it sure is wonderful to see the
increase in traffic around town.
Speaking of increase. The Gazette subscription department has also been
busy lately. Our "Gazette Family" has grown another dozen members in the
past week. Our group is evolving from a the standard old family tree, to
a whole Forest of Family and Friends.

Today, they are saying,...... go ahead and eat fish. The benefits far
outweigh the detriments one might expect.
Well I'll be darned. Remember a few years ago what the "experts"
predicted would happen to the spotted owls? You might also remember
"most experts" predicted the demise of the eagle as well. One such
expert I remember, was willing to bet his wife and first born child that
the eagle population absolutely couldn't rebound........ Oops, I guess
that trainload of experts generated a "slight" miscalculation.

======= LEONA SEVIGNY ========
Today is the day Leona and all that know her, celebrate the

If there was a club for wonderful women, Leona could be president. If
there were trophy's for making the very best of the hand we're dealt in

By 2:30 am Thursday morning, our street department crew was plowing and
hauling away the snow from Main street and it's adjoining streets in the
downtown area. For the most part, the streets in entire business
district were cleaned up and ready for holiday shoppers.
Unfortunately,.. someone must have forgotten to tell our city
maintenance department about the communities newly acquired property on
main street. Although the streets in front of the former Getz Drug Store
and the former Walsh County Bank building was cleaned up in short order.
The sidewalks in front of those two buildings were not. If our community
is going to be in the sailboat fuel storage business, we should also be
willing to keep the sidewalks "snowfree" so that shoppers can use them
to get to other stores on main street that sell more desirable
merchandise. And, it should be noted that in order for the the sidewalks
to be of any value. They should be cleaned from the curb to the store
front.
Or so it seems to me.

I did consider it Tom, and here it is. Thank you very much for caring
and sharing. There is nothing like a giant tub of popcorn, smothered
with hot butter and a ice cold pop (soda, for you folks south of St.
Paul). And, if your not on insulin, grab a snicker bar for the previews.
----------------------------
Speaking of insulin and Snicker bars, and of course everyone already
knows that you DO NOT get sugar diabetes from eating sugar. Here are
some interesting,
~~~~~~~~ SUGAR FACTS ~~~~~~~
How much sugar do Americans really eat? Not as much as reported. Using
information from a 2001 report as illustration, a general statement like
"Americans consume more than 150 pounds of sugar in a year" is not only
thoroughly misleading, it is completely wrong. Such false assertions
perpetuate the myth that "Americans eat too much sugar." The fact is the
average American consumes no more than 1.6 ounces of sugar per day or
less than 40 lbs. annually.
The source of this 1999 report information is the Economic Research
Service [ERS] of the United States Department of Agriculture. ERS
statistics are purely economic numbers. By convention, economists use
the term consumption to describe the total supply of any product
available for all commercial uses during a specific period of time.
Economic consumption simply indicates the total weight of a product that
is used throughout a year. No matter the goods, economic consumption is
calculated by subtracting year-end inventory from the sum of the amount
of merchandise produced during the year + the stock-on-hand at the
beginning of the same year. <<<<<<
great movie for everyone to see. Maybe consider putting it in your
newsletter. It would be nice to fill the theater every night. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Tom Campbell <<<<
I did consider it Tom, and here it is. Thank you very much for caring
and sharing. There is nothing like a giant tub of popcorn, smothered
with hot butter and a ice cold pop (soda, for you folks south of St.
Paul). And, if your not on insulin, grab a snicker bar for the previews.
----------------------------
Speaking of insulin and Snicker bars, and of course everyone already
knows that you DO NOT get sugar diabetes from eating sugar. Here are
some interesting,
~~~~~~~~ SUGAR FACTS ~~~~~~~
How much sugar do Americans really eat? Not as much as reported. Using
information from a 2001 report as illustration, a general statement like
"Americans consume more than 150 pounds of sugar in a year" is not only
thoroughly misleading, it is completely wrong. Such false assertions
perpetuate the myth that "Americans eat too much sugar." The fact is the
average American consumes no more than 1.6 ounces of sugar per day or
less than 40 lbs. annually.
The source of this 1999 report information is the Economic Research
Service [ERS] of the United States Department of Agriculture. ERS
statistics are purely economic numbers. By convention, economists use
the term consumption to describe the total supply of any product
available for all commercial uses during a specific period of time.
Economic consumption simply indicates the total weight of a product that
is used throughout a year. No matter the goods, economic consumption is
calculated by subtracting year-end inventory from the sum of the amount
of merchandise produced during the year + the stock-on-hand at the
beginning of the same year. <<<<<<

Tuesday our community said goodbye to one of it's very best. Beginning
with a large contingent of students and friends. With eyes closed and
heads bowed praying and saying farewell in front of the high school
Sunday afternoon.
To the hundreds of people attending his prayer service Monday evening
all hoping and praying they might say the right thing.
How does one fully extend or express ones sympathies and compassion for
the great loss our entire town was feeling? Somehow mere words put
together in a sentence leaves so many important things left unsaid.
So how, I wondered, could we tell the parents of our 17 year old
friend how important young Ronnie had become. Then, on the day of young
Ronnie's funeral, in Grafton's High School gymnasium. The right words
started becoming evident. Though many of those words couldn't be heard.
The message was becoming more meaningful, tho somehow hard to explain.
Hundreds of friends surrounded the place where Ronnie was lain. Peggy
Dahl-Bartunek's High School choir singing special selections, spoke
volumes of how folks felt about Ronnie. Justin Fremont traveling all the
way from Missouri to play "Freebird," one of Ronnie's favorites, added
even more significance to his tribute.
As Ronnie J. Fellman was laid to his rest on the day we all will
remember. Everyones eyes were filled with tears and left with one simple
question. Why?
Then,.... Wednesday, the Walsh County Record came out and the front
page answered my question. On the top half of the front page of the
Record is a picture with inserts of Ronnie's last day with us.
The script on the top of the picture read: "Ronnie. You'll be
remembered" then across the bottom of the picture in bold, appropriate
print. It said:
Ronnie J. Fellman 2/3/91 --- 12/4/08
I think you'll agree, that it's easy to see how important young Ronnie
had grown to be. How in 17 years he accomplished so much. Leaving his
loving family and friends with so many nice words, and a truly fantastic
picture to see.
God speed little buddy. You have left this world and me, a much better

I couldn't agree more with your thoughts on Al Gore. What a
hypocritical bunghole. Same old same old, somebody comes up with a great
idea for someone else to do, but they don't want to do it themselves. As
far as the global warming goes there is strong scientific evidence the
earth is warming up and has accelerated that warming trend since humans
started burning fossil fuels. Other warming and cooling events through

other minor events such as the meteor that struck the earth with enough

The current temperature is 7 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 8/-1

It was 47 degrees on this date in 1974
It's cold enough to freeze road apples before they get to the wagon

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
---------------------------
The price of gas around town, (the kind of gas that automobiles run on)
is $1.75 a gallon, give or take a penny.
It hasn't been determined, at least not yet, how much the price of gas,
(the kind from beans, boiled cabbage and buttered popcorn) will be in
the end. Pardon the pun.
I noticed that Al (green movement) Gore met with our president and Vice
President elect on Tuesday and they all seem to agree. We must do
something about the global warming issues,.... before Mother Nature gets
all the credit.
I understand they're suggesting that "we" MUST put a flatulent tax on
farm animals. If, in fact, flatulence really is creating a major global
warming issue. I think before taxing the farm animals that have proven
themselves a value to all mankind. They should start with our Washington
D.C. politicians. Everyone knows there is more bull excrement excreted
from the folks meddling with the nations laws in Washington D.C. than
all of the descendants from Noah's Ark put together
Now I'm not sure what arm of the federal government will be responsible
for measuring the volume of flatulence emitted by farm animals. I do
hope the officials doing the testing won't be required to stand directly
behind the animals when they take their samples. I certainly hope they
will treat our nations farm animals with the same care and respect that
a reputable proctologist would use while probing around the same area of
a politician in Washington D.C..
Ironic, isn't it? That a man who flies around the country, and the
world, in his very own private jet and calls several mansions home has
the audacity to tell 4-H students around the United States that they
must not only capture and record the amount of liquid and solid material
emitted from their 4-H project. They MUST also figure out a way to bag
their pet projects flatulence as well.
Now,... if that isn't a giant pile of bull excrement, I'll clean the
hog barns west of Larimore and use it to fertilize Al Gore's organically
grown vegetables myself.
There is, in my opinion, a reason the "Green Movement" was name such.
It definitely will create mountains of additional "greenbacks" for the
very wealthy. And,... of course the "movement" part almost certainly
must be a synonym for bowel movement.
Or so it seems to me.

I'll bet there is still some folks out there that remember the spotted

corner of Hill Avenue and Hiway 17 is still ongoing. Based on the
progress I see from the street. It could be early spring before anyone

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
--------------------------
It is true. Grafton is located north of the daily paper. It is also
true that Grafton is the largest United States city between Grand Forks
and Winnipeg. Even though we are one of the smallest large towns in
North Dakota, we do have a whole lot to be proud of.
If you have watched the national news lately, you must have noticed a
company called Republic Windows and Doors closed their doors. Of course,
everyone agrees it's unfortunate when any business fails. Fortunately
for us in the Grafton area, and the folks in the Warroad Mn. area,
Marvins Windows and Doors are not only a very vibrant family run
business. The Marvins Windows and Doors - the nations largest of it's
kind - operation is currently doubling the floor plan of their Grafton
facility. AND,... not only, are they not asking for money, they
"voluntarily" share their profits with all the folks that are employed
there as well.
Certainly when business is brisk, there is much more to share.
Conversely, when not so brisk, there simply is less to share. However,
it is my understanding, that everyone "always" knows where they stand at
Marvins,...... always.
So, I hope, if you are thinking of adding an addition to your
facilities or maybe even building a new one. Please consider using
Marvins Windows and Doors to fill the holes you look and walk through.
AND, if by chance you have any questions or concerns with any of Marvins
products. I can assure you, they have a stable of experts that can
address and resolve any concern you may have.
THEN, when you get your new home built, B&D Flooring can install just
exactly the kind of floor covering your lifestyle demands. WHEN the
building is done and the floors are all finished, contact Landowski's
Furniture in Grafton. Julie and her staff will assist you with all your
furnishing needs.
Now then,... Marvins Windows and Doors can and will deliver almost
anywhere around the world. However, B&D Flooring and Landowski's
Furniture's delivery area is somewhat less.

Please mark your calendar and plan to attend the festivities at

I'll pass it on hoping everyone else knows what it's all about. Chris

Hi Gary, Just a reminder, Grafton Lutheran Church will be hosting their
annual Carols and Candles this Sunday evening, Dec.14, at 7 p.m. at the
church. Everyone is invited to join together at the Grafton Lutheran
Church to worship this holiday season! Have a great day, Gary.

Thank you for caring and sharing Chris. That's the funny part of
information. If somebody doesn't tell somebody something. Nobody knows
anything, about anything. Or so it seems to me.

I understand the Vessel of Praise presentation Friday evening was
another huge success. Several folks told me the music was absolutely
fantastic and the event was enjoyed by a really large turnout as well.
If you haven't had the opportunity to attend a Vessel of Praise
concert, I can assure you, you will truly enjoy it when you do.

Pat and I, along with a few hundred other area residents, were invited
to attend a Christmas Supper at the brand new Grafton Mennonite Church
West of town. The event was given by the Grafton Mennonite Youth.
As I've said in the past, I am much more of a consumer than a
connoisseur. However, the meal the Mennonite Youth group prepared and
served Friday evening involved several courses of culinary cuisine that
was absolutely delicious. Three varieties of homemade pie, with real ice
cream, completed the meal portion of the evening.
Cy & Delores Novak, Glora Holiday and my Aunt Alice Lessard were among
our tables supper conversationalists. I can't remember how many years
it's been since I shared the same Christmas supper table with aunt
Alice. I'm guessing it must have been at least 6 or 7 smaller belt sizes
ago at gramma Sevigny's house at 818 Cooper Avenue.
A beautiful Christmas Carol Concert presented by the Youth of the
Mennonite Community provided us with a absolutely beautiful ending to a
most wonderful evening.

By now almost everyone has figured out that I end each Gazette "going
to work on my dash". The dash, you'll remember, is that space between
the date you were born,... and the date you pass on.
It is, after all that is said and done, the one thing we will all have
in common, the dash that is.
The dash that will be assigned to everyone is significant to be sure.
To some folks, the dash will come easier than others. I can only hope
the dash I leave gives some meaning and value to the time I am able to
spend hear on earth.
Our world lost a courageous young man this past Thursday. Who's life
time was short hear on earth. His knowledge and wisdom and warm smile
all started at the same moment he was born.
He brought joy to all those who knew him and showed the world how to
handle misfortune and adversity. He fought with the fervor of a man much
his senior and never gave in til the end.
Ronnie Fellman was a young boy, measured in years, but a grown man, by
the way he handled his fears. Ronnie not only leaves our world a better
place. He has left us a fantastic example to follow.
Pat and I along with our entire family extend our most sincere and
heartfelt condolences to the Fellman family and to all of Ronnies
friends as well.
And if I may, I would like to share a little something I have learned
along the way.

They simply take up residence
in our hearts, our minds

It saddens me to share the obituary of a young man that has given so
much. While having so much yet to give.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.

A very generous individual donated more than $110,000,000.00 and he
built a facility in which to play hockey. It is in Grand Forks and they
call it The Engelstad Arena. Then, that same very generous individual
donated more than $10,000,000 to build a facility in Thief River Falls
to play hockey in and I believe they also called that facility The
Engelstad. THEN,.. soon after, the same benefactor donated another huge
chunk of money to attach a large addition on to the Ralph so that UND
could play basketball inside during the winter and they called that
facility The Betty.
Not long ago, another generous individual donated a significant amount
of money so that the folks in Minto could enjoy a first class facility
to hold various civic functions in Minto. AND, I believe, they call that
The Koehmstedt Community Center.
A very kind and generous man spent a lifetime acquiring, and building a
entire community of items from the past, and he called his community,
just northeast of Auburn, Jugville. Sig Jagielski, upon his death,
donated his beloved Jugville and all of the items representing his
entire lifes passion to Graftons Heritage Village.
Ironically, a mere handful of individuals, most being volunteers, are
responsible for the care and maintenance of the entire Heritage Village
complex. And,.. they are trying to accomplish that task on a budget
amounting to little more than a pittance.
Members of the Heritage Village organization work diligently holding
regular bingo sessions and pancake and sausage breakfasts among other
functions trying to raise enough money to simply keep the Village
operating.
Now then,... during a recent research session in the Gazette Library a
thought came to mind. (no pun intended) What if,... I thought. What if
some wonderful individual or family of individuals, in the likeness of
the Engelstad's and Koehmstedt's would step forward and donate
sufficient money to replace the antiquated furnace at Heritage Village?
I'm guessing, maybe, if such a donation would happen, and it certainly
could happen, the generous benefactor's name might well go down in the
annals of the Village for future generations to see and appreciate. Or
so it seems to me.

Speaking of all things old. Just yesterday I became aware of a business
transaction that took place many years ago. It seems a local young (at
the time) boy had his heart and soul set on a particular used bike in
town.
Bert, so the story goes, owned just exactly the kind of bike Don
wanted. Although I actually heard the asking price of the bike
yesterday, for some reason that number escapes me at the present time.
Anyway, as I understand it, after minimal negotiations a fair price was
established. A method of obtaining the funds was secured, and by golly,
Donald LaBerge became the proud new owner of Bert Overlands bike.
Aren't memories wonderful?

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-------------------------
According to an article in the latest edition of the Walsh County
Record. Three (3) properties were "offered" to the citizens of Grafton
for the sum of one, ($1.00) dollar each. In general terms that's about
the same price as a dozen rolls of toilet paper at the dollar store. Of
course, some might argue that the toilet paper, in the end (pardon the
pun) would be a better deal.
It seems now that the former owner of the former Walsh County Bank
building, has indeed "given" our community the property they haven't
been paying the taxes on anyway.
I/we can only hope that "we" work posthaste at transforming that
property into a positive addition to the downtown business community.
And,... it goes without saying, now that the building has a responsible
owner, again, that the new owners (the citizens of Grafton) will most
certainly keep the building facade and sidewalks cleaned to the same
standards the rest of the downtown business establishments must adhere
to.
++++
The former Fish's 5 & 10 cent store - obviously the store was named
before inflation - has also become the property of the citizens of
Grafton. Gordy Stark "gave" me the first cap gun I ever owned way back
when he and Fritz Finger were the proprietors of Fish's Five & Dime.
A drive down the alley gives evidence that the back end of the building
is working diligently against the pressures of gravity and mature
nature. To put it another way. A substantial section of that building,
several feet long, doesn't seem to want to belong to the rest of the
building anymore and has starting breaking away from it. The yellow
caution tape and barricade in the alley behind it gives one a fare
indication of the issues "we" have acquired with that facility.
++++
Fortunately, for us, the property we "acquired" at 334 Stephen Avenue
only has a 'salvageable' garage with 7 foot sidewalls. And, fortunately
for us, the two 1940's model International Cub tractor mowers in
Grafton's grass cutting fleet probably didn't have enough grass to cut
during the summer anyway.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff
-------------------------
Mitchell South Dakota doesn't have anything over on us. Although they
do have a Cabella store and the world's only corn palace. Actually the
first "worlds only Corn Palace" was built in Sioux City Iowa. After 4
years and a crop failure, the folks in Mitchell SD took over the venture
and it has remained there every since.
Every year, they start from scratch and put a new mural, made entirely
of different grains, on the outside of the Corn Palace. As you can
imagine, the risk of fire is great, so the local fire department made a
rule that no flammable material is allowed on the bottom 10 feet of the
palace. It's just plain old brick...
Now then,..... it is true that Grafton doesn't have a Cabella's,...
yet. However, we do have two very large piles of corn. One just east of
the Curling Club. That one also serves as a giant turkey and pigeon
feeder, and a really, really big pile just west of town.
As a matter of fact, just the other day I overheard someone (at
Granny's) call Tom Grabanski's giant corrugated complex west of town
"The Corn Palace".
If we could get Ann McCann to put some corn "murals" on Tom's Corn bins
we would have a tourist attraction like Mitchell does. Then again,..
maybe not.

Today Norman (Nip) Lykken celebrates the anniversary of his birth.

This Sunday is the day set aside for all the folks that like pancakes

All proceeds will be used for the operation of Grafton's Heritage

~~ REMEMBER FRIDAY NIGHT ~~
Please plan to attend Friday nights Vessel of Praise performance.
This is the 6th Annual Vessel of Praise Advent Service an it has been
set for this Friday, December 5th, 7:30 p.m. at Grafton Lutheran
Church.
The 13 individuals that comprise the Vessel of Praise group are nothing
short of Fantastic Musical Artist's. They come from all walks of life,
earning their living in a variety of vocations.
The Grafton Lutheran Church sanctuary will be decorated for
the Christmas season and they have graciously offered to serve sweets
and coffee in the basement after the service.
Members of Vessel of Praise consider the Advent Service the
highlight of their year, and they have new line-up of songs, including
contemporary and traditional numbers. They work hard all year so that
they may share their music, and the message of hope brought by the birth
of the Christ child with everybody in the local and surrounding
communities.
Everyone in the area is invited to attend and enjoy what has become one
of the areas premiere musical entertainment performances of the year.
Bring your friends and plan to stay after the performance for
fellowship and refreshments.

Normal H/L temp for this date is 25/9
It was 53 degrees on this date in 1982
5,000 years ago the Sahara Desert was a tropical forest. I guess Henry

Before I get carried away,... again, I must do a bit of house cleaning.
Better known as correcting an error in yesterdays Gazette. I knew
better, unfortunately I just didn't do better. I'm sure it is a fact
that Kathy Larson actually does bake a truly scrumptious apple pie.
However, the piece of apple pie I ate at Jeff and Yvette's on
Thanksgiving day came out of the oven of Cathy Stark. I hope you ladies
can forgive my ineptness. I'd be more than willing to eat another whole
pie and beg forgiveness.
-------------------------------
It no secret that I drink coffee,.... lots of coffee. Somebody has to
keep Juan and his donkey "coffee bean" busy. However,.. Getting an
invitation to consume even more coffee is just short of being outside
the norm even for me. I would like to share Tabatha's not with everyone
just in case you see me with a pretty young lady, talking and waving my
arms like a Frenchman, over a cup of coffee.
Besides that. I'm guessing this could be the first time Tabatha has
been able to share with several thousand folks in more than 30 states
and two foreign countries how wonderful she really thinks the Neil
Widner family is.

Greetings Mr. Moe,
This is Tabatha Widner writing. I've been an avid reader of your
gazette for a little over a month now since I've started at the Grafton
Area Chamber of Commerce. A big "Thank you" to you for the warm
welcome to Grafton. It seems you also know my father-in-law, Neil
Widner. I have to admit, I am truly blessed to have married in to
such a wonderful family. The longer I've been in Grafton, the more
connections I've made through my father-in-law, he is truly a great
man. I actually just saw you this morning driving thru the Park while
we were setting up the Coke trailer!
I would really like to meet you in person, maybe over a cup of coffee
some time. I've heard you have great ideas and thoughts and would
love to hear them. Again, thank you for the welcome and I look
forward to reading more issues of the "SHIVERCITY GAZETTE!"
Warmest Regards,
Tabatha Widner
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Tabatha, I will look forward to
our "coffee chat". I will also be looking forward to introducing you to
"our" Ohio Fox Hunting Friends when they arrive in Grafton.

For the most part, the next note is self explanatory. EXCEPT to say. If
you haven't attended a presentation of the Vessel of Praise. You have,
without question, One Magical Musical Memory remaining to acquire in
your lifetime.
AND, this Friday evening at 7:30 you will have the opportunity to do
just that.

Hi Gary:
Still getting the SHIVERCITY and trying to keep up with the news as
best I can!
I was wondering: Would you mind putting a little plug in one of
your upcoming issues about the 6th Annual Vessel of Praise Advent
Service which is set for this Friday, December 5th, 7:30 p.m. at
Grafton Lutheran? This is a little different for us, as in past years
we have had our service on a Sunday night . . . but schedules are
getting so tight it is hard to find a time when our group of 13 are
all available! So, we have scheduled it for a Friday night this year,
and we'll see how the turnout is. As usual, Grafton Lutheran will
have their sanctuary decorated for the Christmas season (Note: I
didn't use or call it the politically correct "Holiday season"), and
they have graciously offered to serve sweets and coffee in the basement
after the service. Those of us in Vessel of Praise consider the
Advent Service the highlight of our year, and we've got a line-up of new
songs, including contemporary and traditional numbers. We would
love to share our music, and the message of hope brought by the birth of
the Christ child with everybody in our local and surrounding
communities, and hope to see everybody on Friday night.
If you have inclination, we'd really appreciate a plug from you to
your readers!
Thanks.

Thanks a million for caring and sharing Barb. Of course I have the
inclination, as a matter of fact, I really really want to.
For years I have heard, "There's never anything to do in this town".
Heck, a hundred years ago, or so, I probably said the same thing myself.
Vessels of Praise truly is BIG CITY entertainment, put on by people
that are every bit as professional as the folks on Broadway. Their music
and Their message will creep into your heart and warm your soul. You
will leave the Vessels of Praise performance Friday night, trying to
find words appropriate to describe the magnificent performance.
~~ Everyone is welcome to attend ~~
