There will be a Fall Craft Sale Tomorrow (Saturday) at the Grafton
Armory. If your coming to town for the sale anyway, stop in the Squire
Shop and Mary's and check out all the wonderful things they have to
offer. I think you will really enjoy a walk through Henry's
Countrypolitan and see what they have to offer. If your looking for
jewelry or ideas for the coming holidays drop by Golden Harvest Jewelry.
It is one of the neatest little jewelry stores in the country.
Jeff Narloch (Golden Harvest Jewelry) is the "goldsmith" responsible
for all those beautiful little golden sugarbeet lapel pins you see in
the valley. Some of them, even have a real diamond mounted in them.

So far I haven't actually heard of all the ramifications involved with
shipping PaPa Lou's Scrumptious BBQ Sauce around the country by mail. I
have heard from a few folks interested in having that happen.
For instance, Rick and Stephanie Kettells from Lakeside Resort &
General Store in the Branson Missouri area sent the following note. >>>>

We would like to try some of the BBQ sauce. Might work out that we may
want to introduce some of this fine sauce to the many travelers and

Thanks a million for caring and sharing Rick. We are working on getting
some of PaPa's savory sauce to Branson. It just may be shipped direct
from the Country Smokehouse to Branson. (Maybe Kelly and David would let
Pat and me deliver it personally) While I'm at it, I might mention, for
those planning a trip to Branson, they might do well by contacting "The
Gang" at Lakeside Resort to see how their facility works in their travel
plans during a visit to Branson's World Class Entertainment center.

What a wonderful Christmas gift for those of us who live in all year

then from some unknown people in some unknown area!

the US don't know that some sugar comes from beets! Everyone in CA.

Small grain harvest in the area is virtually complete, with potato and
beans tickling the halfway mark. The sugarbeet harvest with probably 7
to 8 percent of the allowable harvestable acres out, is really just
beginning.
Full, stockpile, harvest is tentatively scheduled to begin on or about
October 1. When I was personally involved in the beet harvest. This is
the time of the year when I it would feel like there was a torrential
flow of adrenalin running rampant through my veins.
Long days combined with hard work and hundreds, if not thousands, of
miles of driving puts a body and soul through a supreme test of will and
tenacity. This is the time of year when "everyone", whether physically
working in the harvest or simply living in the area where harvest is
taking place, must be mindful of the increased activity and be
especially careful.
Knowing that there is literally thousands of people, working with as
much equipment, travelling tens of thousands of miles, moving multiple
millions of tons of sugarbeets to processing facilities throughout the
valley, give ample reason for care. Or so it seems to me.

I must admit, I am more than a bit confused (disappointed) in John
McCain's rational with regard to the United States sugar program.
If I understand him (McCain) correctly. He actually believes that we
(the American people) would all be better off, AND, that the wonderful
folks in foreign countries would be willing and happy, to sell us sugar
for less than we can grow it here in the US.
Ya sure (pardon my Norwegian) Mr. McCain. That's just exactly what they
(the Sand Ranchers) are doing to us with oil too.......... Right????

Sauce. I'm not sure if you can ship BBQ sauce in the mail, or, for that
matter if it's even legal to mail such a savory sauce through the US
Postal System. I'm guessing we're going to find that out in the next few
days however.

Rumor has it that Marvins Windows & Doors major facility expansion
project is on, or, maybe even ahead of schedule. It's my understanding
the Marvins expansion project will, in effect, double the floor space of
the Grafton facility. Which I might add, gives even more reason for me
to suggest to all of those planning to build buildings needing windows
and doors. Please, use Marvins Windows and Doors.

I've received several emails the past few days that include whats
referred to as
"The Birk Economic Recovery Plan" from several Gazette Family members.
It appears, on the surface at least, to have significant value, and, I
think just might be the answer. It is a bit long to include in the
Gazette, however if anyone is interested in seeing it (if there is
anybody left that hasn't seen it) I would be happy to forward a copy of
the plan to you. All you need do is ask for it.

It's the time of the year when folks start packing their bags and
"migrate" toward warmer weather. Such is the case with Gene & Alice.

Just a quick note to our friends and family. We are getting ready
to hit the road once again, bound for California. It seems too early
in the year, although the leaves are turning, and there are very few
birds on the lake any more, and those we see are flocking to head to
warmer climates (just like us). This has seemed like a quick six
months, for sure, but we have had a wonderful time here in MN with many
visits from friends. We will, as usual, spend the weekend in Sioux
Falls, and then head west on Monday a.m. Will be nice to see the CA
family & friends again also. We will stay still for long enough to
get the laundry done and then take off on another adventure to the
Carolinas for two weeks. It is a part of the country we've never
explored, so I'm sure we'll find new stuff to see and do. We are
leaving a few unfinished projects behind just so we'll have something to
do next summer (besides fish and loaf), and there are some projects in
CA that we may get to this year...or maybe not, depending on how many
card games we have to play, and how many visits we can schedule. If
you didn't get around to visiting the lake this year, we'll be back
around May and will look forward to having you come and see us here.
We'll try to keep it between the ditches, and you will hear from us next

We received another "shot" of rain last night. Most folks, especially
those that use agriculture to support their families, might say, "we've
had enough already".
It's probably just a rumor, however, someone said they "thought" they
saw Noah at Simonsons Lumber Yard getting bids on timbers large enough
to build an ark.
I really doubt that the rumor is true though, as I haven't seen anyone
running around town looking for a cute pair of puppies.

The other day I mentioned Unity Medical Center and how important it is
for any community to have a good medical facility.
Of course it is extremely important to have good health care facilities
and health care providers "right here at home". However,... there is one
thing that is even more important than having great facilities and
fantastic health care providers "right here at home" and that is that
"the people right here at home use them.
Of course "we" (Grafton, Park River, Cavalier and Drayton) are, in
fact, small towns. However, it is also a fact that there are numerous
procedures and processes that our local health care providers can handle
with every bit of professionalism of larger towns.
As a matter of fact, the exact same Doctor that gave me my sight back,
not only operates on patients in Grand Forks. He also performs his
"miracles" right here in Grafton at Unity Medical Center, and, as I
understand it, he will do the same at Park Rivers First Care Health
Center as well. The fantastic people in the Therapy department of Unity
Medical Center returned the full and complete use of my left arm, every
bit as well as any medical facility in the country could have.
Please don't misunderstand me. "Our" medical facilities cannot, nor, do
I believe that they profess to handle everything situation that arises.
I have every confidence that my "local medical provider" will advise me
of those circumstances that can, and should, be handled here. And, that
they will refer me to a larger facility complete with specialists, when
that can't happen.
The bottom line of course is ,....... Small town facilities,... "we can
either use them,...... or we can, and will, lose them.
I am pleased to share the following note from Rosemary, who I might
add, spends much of her time on the hospital board trying to provide
"us" with the best health care and facilities possible.

I would also like to extend our most sincere condolences to Unity
Medical Centers foundation director, Christl Durand and her family.
Christl lost her mother, Earlis Hill this past Friday. Her funeral was
Tuesday in Valley City.
I am confident that Earlis truly will be able to Rest in Peace knowing
that she has left this world a prodigy the likes of Christl Durand.

Some of you have probably noticed that I mention Marvins Windows and
Doors in the Gazette once in awhile. You might have even surmised that I
would hope everyone requiring new windows would use Marvins windows.
Because, you have also read, more than once,........... when I've

To that end I must once again commend Kerry at Graftons True Value for
using Marvins Windows in his latest renovation project.
HOWEVER, it has been awhile since that project was completed and the
bright yellow Marvins Windows stickers are starting to fade. I have
talked to Hans and I understand would be willing to provide a new set of
stickers.

Monday night and sure enough, it did. 1.38 inches fell right here on our
front lawn. It sounds like we can expect another shot again today. About
the only benifit I can see from this much moisture during harvest is it
does wash off the hydrant Sami "pee's" on.

I've said it before, and, maybe It's time to say it again.
"Small town USA,.. use em, or lose em".
I received a most disheartening note Monday afternoon from our good
friend Christine Jensen. Before I share Christines note, I should add
that Pat and I have eaten at Draytons Hasting Landing Restaurant several
times this past summer. We found the service to be good, the food
excellent and the portions sufficient to feed a threshing crew.
Christines note; >>>> Hi Gary, hope you are well!! Thanks
for your constant work on the Gazette. I just wanted to let you know
sadly my husband and I had to close our restaurant Hastings Landing in
Drayton a few weeks ago. We just couldn't seem to get ahead. It was an
extremely sad day for us. I would like to thank all your subscribers who
came over to support us, we really appreciated their business.
I am currently selling Papa Lou's BBQ Sauce. My husband
makes it, we named it after my father Larry "Lou" Jensen. I have had
outstanding responses in Grafton, as of today I have it in Wally's, The
Daily Grind, Rosies and Simonson's Station Store. It is delicious and
goes with everything. Just wanted to let you know so you could maybe
pick up a bottle. Thanks for all your help getting the word out about
our restaurant and about my brother's benefit. It was a great success,
more than 700 people were in attendance. That's the awesome thing about
living in a small town, when someone is in need, everyone comes out to
help.

As you drive through Leistikow Park I encourage you to take note
of the wonderful wooden bridges over the perennial beds and the one that
spans the ditch on the southwest corner of the park. The bridges were
constructed by members of the park staff. Money for the materials for
the bridges was donated by the folks from MDU (Montana Dakota
Utilities).
The bridges really do give the park a significant new look. They
add a special kind of depth and variety to a already fantastic appearing
small city park.
Over the past few years I have been, more than a bit tough on our
nations, (the whole world for that matter) largest retailer. In the
interest of fare play, I must report that Wal-Mart actually has
contributed to our community. As a matter of fact. In the past two years
Wal-Mart has donated $2,000 toward playground equipment for Grafton's
parks.
I am always impressed by the work our park system does. The Park
Board members sipmply must wear several hats over the course of the
year. Making certain that they represent the entire community "fairly",
investing the parks resources in a manner that every citizen can
appreciate, must be a very difficult task at best.
Or so it seems to me.

Last nights rain will continue to keep the lawns green lush and green

This is the time of the year when a variety of evergreens can really
display their beauty in a well planned landscape.

I am always surprise with the response I get whenever I send out the
"Goose Story". Most often I receive a simple "Thanks" or "interesting"
and sometimes I'm asked if I know, "why one side is longer than the
other". This time I received that question along with another
"interesting" theory in the same note from Norma. She wrote; >>>>

story. Jim asked if you know why one line of the geese formation is
longer then the other. Yup, your right, because one line has more
geese in it then the other!!!
We have been told that the hummingbirds "hitch" a ride under the
back feathers of the geese so we will be looking forward to seeing our
hummingbirds back here in Az soon. Love the spring and fall weather

someone in the Gazette family that qualifies as a bird authority. Maybe

Personally, I've never talked to a goose hunter that has mentioned
getting "two birds with one stone" (pardon the pun).

If you happen to run across any really crafty people, between now and
the 27th. Tell them to bring their "stuff" to the Grafton Armory and
include it in the craft sale there next Saturday. It seems like someone
is always looking for another widget to put all their doohickies in.

If your going to eat out on the 30th anyway. Why not plan on going over
to Elmwood for a warm bowl of chili. You will be not only enjoy a
fabulous bowl of chili, it comes with some scrumptious cornbread. AND,
you will be able to enjoy your meal in some of the nicest surroundings
you could possibly find in the entire area.
Proceeds from the Chili Fest will go towards the maintenance of Elmwood
and the surrounding grounds.

I notice the Walsh County Record still has a fare amount of "wall
space" open for any aspiring young, or old, artists to display their
talents. Wouldn't it be great if someone would, or could, paint a
beautiful mural of a piece of Grafton's past there?

The leaves have started turning to beautiful shades of red and gold.
As they should, it is fall you know. Many leaves have already started
falling from the trees. After all, it is fall you know. Our hi-ways and
by-ways are full of farmers with their equipment scurrying to complete
harvest before the snow comes. That, too, is a certain sign fall is
here. Another sure sign of fall is the migration of the goose.
Which brings me to the story of The Goose. I have shared the Goose
Story with friends and family for many years. First by way of the DTN at
work, and for the past several years through the Gazette.
I hope you might find it interesting, and that you may even find some
solace in it's message. >>>>>
======= THE GOOSE STORY =======
This fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter ---
flying along in a V formation --- consider what science has discovered
as to why they fly that way.
As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for
the bird immediately following. By flying in a V formation, the whole
flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird
flew on its own.
People who share a common direction and sense of community
can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are
traveling on the thrust of one another.
When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the
drag and resistance of trying to go it alone,... and quickly gets back
into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in
front.
If we have as much sense as a goose we will stay in
formation with those who are headed the same way we are.
When the Head Goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wind
and another goose flies to the point.
It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs for people
or for geese flying south.
Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep
up their speed.
What do we say when we honk from behind? Finally,
and this is important, when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshots
and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and
follow it down to lend and protection. To stay with the
fallen goose until it is able to fly, or until it dies; and only then do
they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with
their group.
If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like
that.

In yesterdays Gazette I mentioned that the new addition to Graftons
Unity Hospital would have Marvins Windows. Since then, several folks
have written to remind me that the entire hospital will be getting
refitted with new Marvin Windows.
It is wonderful to see two of Graftons largest business operations
doing business with each other.

Thank you for caring and sharing Kathy. It's ironic that I read your
note the very same day as I read a article about Unity Hospital in the
Walsh County Record. The article, titled Unity Launches it's Capital
Campaign speaks about the most recent renovations and of the remaining
two phases of construction that will bring about several significant
improvements to Unity Hospital.
I have always believed that our Unity Medical Center facilities are as
good as, or better than, any small town in the country. The current
capital improvement projects will do much to guarantee that belief far
into the future.
Wouldn't it be wonderful, if someone the likes of Ralph and Betty
Engelstad would find it in their heart to endow Grafton's Unity Medical
Center with a significant gift that would assure the medical needs of
our community would be met well into the future.

Radio station KGPC.... oops,... KXPO radio is celebrating 50 years of
providing this area with news, sports, weather and the events that are
important to those of us living in this area. The station started out as
KGPC and, from the very first day of operation, changed the way people
and business could communicate.
Somewhere, after the Please Pass the Potatoes Show with Francis Phelan
and Bill Janousek's Police Blotter program (that's the one where Bill
reported a two car accident, and one of those cars was a truck) and the
end of Uncle Sig's Old Time Music Show, KGPC evolved becoming KXPO.
Those call letters have remained the same to this day.
Over the years, "our" radio station (KXPO 1340) has contributed much to

this is another beautiful day -- the Lord has made.") Ed Balkee (Caught
in the Web), Gunder Berg (from the Walsh County snuss room), Wally
DeSautel (remember, today is the first day of the rest of our lives.)
Bill Moe (If you can hold a hoe, you can have a garden). Even yours
truly did several Saturday morning "Home and Garden radio shows, not to
mention of course, literally hundreds of sugarbeet harvest reports
during my tenure with American Crystal Sugar Company.
Pat and I have every radio in the house on today (Friday) listening to
various individuals "reminisce". The names they mentioned are many. The
programs and stories nostalgic giving us even more reason to appreciate
the folks, the values, and the presence that Radio station KXPO affords
our humble little community.
CONGRATULATIONS KXPO, and thanks to everyone involved, for providing
me and us, with a venue of entertainment and communication I can only
hope every small towns could enjoy.

It is my understanding that the new addition to Grafton's Unity

November 1. I'm guessing that to mean this coming November.

Diane and Rick Odegard have recently become brand new Grandparents. I
received the following note from "Gramma" Diane.

far it's been fun!!! Kendell Othelia Odegard arrived on September 15th

on the wall!!! I'm sure we will mount a picture or 2 of her on the
wall!!! Grandpa Rick is warming up to the idea that he is old enough to
actually be Grandpa and he and Kendall can be caught cuddling!!! It's
fun to see Matt (Kendall's daddy) take on the parenting role, He had his
first diaper duty and survived (BARELY). Here's hoping that we'll see

For some, unknown, reason our drive has started "attracting" cars that
don't belong on it. I'm not sure why, or even how it happened. My
biggest concern is that I "might" back into them while backing out of
the garage.
I do find it somewhat ironic, however, that the cars using our
driveway for parking could be parked in a parking lot designed
especially for them. As a matter of fact, that parking lot appears to
rarely even used.

The walleye harvest season, for me, is over. "The Walleye Combine" is
on it's trailer and out of the water marking the end of another
fantastic summer season at Arnesen's Rocky Point Resort.
As always, this summer at Rocky Point was filled with wonderful
memories of family and friends gathering together to share the beauty
and companionship that the Lord, most certainly, had in mind when he
fashioned the fabulous, fantastically picturesque, area we have come to
appreciated as Rocky Point on the south shores of northern Minnesota's
renowned Lake of the Woods.
Again this year, Pat and I enjoyed the, often referred to, permanent
residents of the Rocky Point community, and, as always we were pleased
to make the acquaintance of several new visitors as well.
It was especially gratifying for me on the last week of the summer to
be able to spend some time with Rick and Stephanie Ketttells and their
family. The Kettells own the Lakeside Resort & General Store on Table
Rock Lake near Branson Missouri. Although Rick has actually been to
Rocky Point Resort ice fishing. This year, the Kettells family decided
to spend their "vacation" at Rocky Point.
Unfortunately, high winds from hurricane Ike created some significant
damage to their Lakeside Resort and they had to return home a little
earlier than planned. I was assured, however, that they will be
returning next year, and, we will be planning a very special fishing
trip at that time.
P.S.
For those wondering how far it is from our motorhome to Rocky Points
South Park Beach. We put 1078 miles on the Ranger this summer. However,
unfortunately, I forgot to count the numbers of trips we made.

On our last trip around town I noticed Mac McFarlands brand new house
is already on it's foundation in the Lessard edition West of town.
I noticed too, that the "new" windows going into Simonson's new Subway
Sandwich Shop didn't have a Marvins Window sticker on them.
I noticed the house for sale sign was gone from in front of the former
Depuy / O'brien house on Western Ave. Someone told me this morning that
they "thought" it had been sold. (????)
And, I also noticed the house in the 1500 of Kittson has been reduced
in price. If anyone is looking for a nice house, on the south end of
Grafton, check that one out. Rumor has it it has everything "including
the kitchen sink". Right Hank?
Also, there seems to be more and more openings in the Leistikow Park
Campground, for those of you that would like to come and camp in one of
northestern North Dakota's nicest little campgrounds.

Speaking of campgrounds. I would be remiss not to mention the wonderful
new campground facilities at Drayton. The folks in Drayton should be
commended for providing those of us with "homes with holding tanks" a
nice place to spend the night, and, a place to dump. If you know what I
mean.

It was a bit easier to see some changes in our little community this
trip home.
A few streets had new blacktop overlays, even the one by our house was
redone while I was gone. The block of 4th street east of Hill Ave is
finished and in use as is the block of 6th street west of Hill.
The road through Leistikow park looks super, as does the entire park.
And, the second lift has been applied, which completes the St. Johns
church parking lot as well.
Simonson's new Subway Sandwich Shop grand opening still looks, to me
anyway, like it will be a several months away yet.

Rumor has it one of our local photography studio's will have a new guy
pushing the shudder buttons.
And, so far, that beautiful newer home on the southend of town is still
looking for a new remote control operator.

I understand Shawn Kasprick's family will be calling the former Ole
Berg house home very soon and the Craig's have been working diligently
on their new south end Hill Ave home.

Greater Grand Forks on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 and we need your help
as we seek to put our best foot forward with a world-class
"Community Rally" at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
In order for Grand Forks to have a legitimate shot at securing
this event, the Community Rally must be an "absolute success" in order
to demonstrate our communities' desire to once again host this
prestigious event. If we don't energize the community and get people out
for the Community Rally, we won't get this event. We need a successful
Community Rally to differentiate ourselves from the other finalists

Strange call this weekend from a Bob Becker in the Fgo/Mhd area. A
million years ago, he WAS "Terry Lee".
He was calling me because my signature was on the "Receipt" for the
payout for our share of $35 on the night of the dance at the Armory in
September 1959.
I drew an absolute BLANK then and still. If he had not FAX'ed a
copy of the receipt with my Parker Penmanship scrawl, I probably would
still not remember this.
Was this another dance by The Drifters? Or did they just need
someone local to rent the Armory?
Becker is apparently still in the entertainment business and does a
pre-recorded show every week on the Grafton radio station. He plans
on mentioning this dance on his show on the 14th and then sometime in
the next week calling me to ask questions about it - I told him I'd have
to remember it first, so can any of you help or, EVEN BETTER, if you
remember it, YOU do the interview!

Monday Ole Aasand celebrated the anniversary of his birth. It appears
Ole celebrated the big event sitting on a chair in his front yard
watching cars pass by.
Ole didn't look a day over 79 when we passed by although the signs all
over town indicate he was just exactly that...... One day over 79,
that is.

Rain, wind and cool temperatures, combined with a few morning, and
several afternoon naps, all contributed to the noticeable reduction in
Walleye combining since our last visit.
Webster describes a walleye as a fish with large, glossy eyes. a North
American fresh-water perch. It doesn't mention the critters also tend to
be very close lipped at times as well..... and, it certainly should.

This trip home it's much easier to see that the street construction
crews have actually been working on them. And, the new blacktop surface
on the road thru Leistikow park is another major improvement.
The newly constructed "wooden" bridge across the peony beds in the park
also add much to the enjoyment of a trip thru Leistikow Park.

The new exterior facade of the B & D Flooring and Carpet Cleaning
building is almost completed as well. With just a few touchup items here
and there and the installation of a brand new sign out front our son and
daughter-in-laws store will be added to the long list of refurbished
down-town Grafton business establishments.

It doesn't appear, to me anyway, that Simonson's new Subway Sandwich
Shop will be completed in time to open for this years harvest season.
However, It should make it for spring planting. Especially if next
spring is as late as this one was.

Today, Sami and I share the very same hair style. He lost his hair in
one day, at the pet groomer and I lost most of mine, one hair at a time,
over a life time.
To me he still looks like a dog, while some say I look more like an old
goat.

Rumor has it there's a beautiful two story home on a corner lot in the
south end of Grafton for sale. I'm not sure I overheard right or not.
However, the guy said if anyone is interested you should talk to
him,...... or Tim,.... or something like that.

Talking about beautiful, beautification, or simply making things look
better after effort. I understand the folks at the Walsh County Record
are looking for a few energetic individuals to paint the outside of
their building. Actually, I think I read it in the Walsh County Record
in the first place.
Anyway, I'm willing to bet there are at least a few energetic,
artistic, willing to paint a mural for free, individuals just looking
for such a wonderful opportunity. If you know of anyone with a paint
pallet and some free time, tell them to call the folks at the Walsh
County Record in Grafton.
Maybe some of the folks from the Grand Forks Herald would even be
willing to do it,...... for the publicity you know.

It's hard to believe it's almost sugarbeet harvest time again. A time
when former ACSC Vice President of agriculture Stew Bass would stand up
in front of company sugarbeet growers and say, "Well men, it's that time
of the year again. The time when each and every one of you would run
over your own mother,... for one more load of sugarbeets."
Evidently, that enthusiasm, at least to some degree, has carried over
into the grain harvest. Today, a young man driving a fully loaded grain
truck must have forgotten to slow down coming off of hiway 18 when
turning onto hiway 17. The truck rolled over on it's side spilling the
entire load across the hiway.
As I drove around the pile of grain scattered across the hiway I could
see the truck laying on it's side with a "almost" empty grain box.
However I could only imagine that the young man's
fruit-of-the-looms...... were very full,... of something.
Anyway, it is fall in the Red River Valley and harvest is in full
swing. Please drive careful and remember. Often, the folks you cast your
frustrations at for driving slow on the road are really only trying to
make a living,.......... for them and their families. While working hard
feeding us and our families.

Yesterdays reported rain amounts around the area varied from "just over
an inch" to "I'll bet we got close to four inches". The battery
operated, official Gazette, rain gauge recorded 1.89 inches in the past
twenty four hours. John Gudajtes reported he had 1.8 inches at his ranch
west of Warsaw by 10:30 yesterday, and, he said it was still raining.
I'd be surprised if he (John) isn't already building a ark to haul in
his beets this fall.
Several intersections around town were flooded. The one near our house
was, almost, deep enough to float The Walleye combine.
The news on two different TV stations reported yesterdays rain as the
proverbial "million dollar rain". It's obvious that those folks haven't
checked the price of corn and potatoes lately. And, even more obvious,
they haven't taken the last fifty years worth of inflation into account
either.

Mother nature dumped a bit over 1½ inches of rain on our front lawn
in about two hours. It sounds like we can expect even more the rest of

It's been said, and, I think, I've said it once or twice myself.
"Things often come in groups of threes".
The first three things I pondered as I returned home yesterday, in no
specific geographical or chronological order, was.
It certainly is a good thing the folks at Subway (on the corner of
hiways 17 & 81) build sandwiches faster than they build the facilities
to build the sandwiches in.

Then... I wondered how long it would take the contractor responsible
for rebuilding a few of our communities streets, if we had had a normal
amount of rainfall and adverse weather, rather than the desert like
(dry) conditions we have experienced for most of the summer.

Then..... as I made my mandatory every day, or as often as I can, trip
thru Leistikow Park. I noticed that the road "I thought" was supposed to
be completed by late July is still, relatively, untouched.
However, that hasn't effected the frisbee golf folks much. I counted 9
"frisbeeers" (spl) on our last trip thru the park.

GASTRONOMY: according to my Webster,.... is the art of good eating.
That being said, it would be fair to say the state of my being is the
end result of participating in at least one of the "art's".

It is unfortunate that the world is full of folks that need our help
and our prayers. Fortunately, the world is also full of folks willing to
extend a helping hand, whenever and where ever possible.
If I were going to make a poster that exemplifies the worlds finest
individuals. I would be hard pressed to find a better example than
Michael Jensen.
Until I received the following note from Michael's sister, Christine I
was in hopes that Michael already was on the road to a healthy recovery.

A benefit for Michael Jensen, 41, will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at
the Kennedy VFW. Michael had a cancerous tumor removed from his
vertebrae and has been going through intensive chemotherapy treatments
which he will continue through February. A youth baseball game between
the Drayton and Kennedy/Hallock teams will be held at 4 p.m., in
Kennedy. A burger supper in conjunction with a silent auction will
take place from 5-9 p.m. The raffle drawing for a John Deere Lawn Mower,
a big screen television and a rifle will be held at 8 p.m. Everyone is
welcome and encouraged to attend and show their support. A huge thank
you goes out to all those coordinating this event. <<<<

STUPID: according to my Webster Dictionary means lacking normal
intelligence.
The "Readers Digest Version" of the Michael Jensen portion of todays
Gazette should have been sent out LAST WEEK. If it had been sent out
last week. The information would have been both meaningful and
beneficial.
Although Christine did send the right information, in ample time, for
me to send it out, the error in not doing so was all mine.
Unfortunately, the raffle portion of Christines message no longer
applies. However, Michaels battle to regain his health and well being is
just as valid as ever. His need for our help and our prayers is just

Although, technically speaking, I can't actually say I was "born" and
raised in the flower business. In some way shape or form, however, I
have been exposed to the industry since I shed my three cornered pants
and started terrorizing the neighborhood on my tricycle.
I do remember, very well, the very first funeral arrangement I ever
made. I was in the first grade and mom let me make it in what was then
called a number 18 paper vase. I remember how patient she was, watching
me stuff a bunch of gladiolus and pompoms into that vase. She even let
me make the bow, although I had to let her make out the card because I
couldn't write very well then, the fact is I still can't.
Anyway, after I thought it was done, mom "helped me" redo it,
(including the bow) and then even dad told me how nice it was. As I
remember it, my bouquet (with moms help) matched the casket spray dad
had just finished making and then dad said I could go with Jerome to
deliver them to the funeral home. I remember feeling very sad that day,
even though I didn't know the person the flowers were for.
Over the years I suspect I made, and, or delivered hundreds if not
thousands of funeral arrangements to every funeral home in northern
North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.
I'll admit, for me, it was always a little bit easier to makeup and or
deliver the funeral arrangements for very old folks than it was for the
younger ones. Just as I have always found it "a bit easier" to attend
the funerals of older folks.
Funerals, from my prospective, have always been to celebrate the life
of our dearly departed. A time for us to exchange the values of the
loved ones we've lost. Funerals are a time to express our sorrows and
grief, to be sure, and, a time to remember the happy and pleasant things
we all hold so dear.
As I attended uncle Danny's funeral yesterday, I found myself
experiencing, once again, the same sadness and sorrows of the end of a
life and the happy, more pleasant, exchanges that go hand in hand in the
celebration of ones life.
I prepared myself, as I was sitting in the church waiting for the
services to begin. I knew it would be difficult seeing aunt Alice walk
in behind the casket. I was expecting the lump in my throat as the
family followed in behind.
However, there was something I hadn't planned that pulled hard on my
emotions. Even before Danny or Alice and the family entered the church.
A group, ten to be exact, of uncle Danny's fellow veterans were ushered
into the church and over to their pews.
I couldn't help thinking, where would this country be had those
veterans not been in the service. I couldn't help thinking about the
10's of thousands of veterans that gave up so much so we could be free.
As I sat there behind them, I couldn't help wondering, how, or what
could we do to thank them for all they have done.
Then,..... I remembered, just as they brought uncle Danny into the
church. The beautiful American flag that was placed on his casket. Those
Veterans, and all those before them, gave everything they could possible
give for that flag and the country it represents. Veterans not only
bought the land the flag and the freedom it represents. They paid for it
with the most valuable commodity God ever created. Their heart, their
lives and even their soul.
And so,... it's time, for all that call this land their home. "Thank
God for our Veterans and thank the Veterans for saving our home."
Gods speed Uncle Danny and Gods speed too, to all the men and women in
uniform.

Pat and I returned home to attend the funeral services of my Uncle
Daniel Lessard on Monday. Danny married my mothers sister Alice
(Sevigny) on June 8, 1948. He served in the Navy during the Pacific
theatre during WW ll and 40 years in the banking business, the last 19
years as bank president. Uncle Danny leaves Alice, his wife of 60 years,
Seven wonderful children, sixteen grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren to carry on his life, his love and his dreams.

The fishing report from Arnesen's Rocky Point Resort continues to be
fantastic. Catching, this past week, has been good, to very good as
well. Several folks had pictures taken holding fish from 26 to 30 inches
long this week. As a matter of fact, one individual will be mounting a
Arnesen Reef walleye that was just 4 inches short of a full yard stick.
WOW!!!!!
AND, Pat was finally able to fill the voids in her flower garden with
several beautiful "rhubarb leaves" we found at a Rocky Point garage
sale.

The Gazette subscription department was busy while I was away on my
last fish feeding expedition. Several "members" sent us their new
addresses. I hope I/we got them all entered correctly.
And, Ken Erlandson & Gloria Charlton will be getting their very first
"direct sample" of Gazette babble today.
As a matter of fact, Gloria sent us a super response to a previous
Gazette note that "might" have suggested our motels are practicing the
American art of "Charging all you can get".

price gouging, particularly in light of the fact our little community is
full of pipeliners, have been running rampant. I am pleased to see you
folks (at the Leonard Motel) are willing to "tell the whole world where
you stand" with regards to pricing. You should be commended for doing
so, and, our community will continue to be a better place for it.
Much the same I might add, as was the case when your organization held
your prices a few years ago and gained the business of "our" Ohio Fox
Hunting Friends.

The note About Grafton's True Value Hardware "liquidation" sale, among
other things, gave Kathee Carlson reason to share the following
thoughts.
She wrote: >>> I had to laugh when I read that True Value's
"liquidation sale" was viewed by some as a "going out of business sale."
Reyleck's used to have a "Storewide Stock Liquidation Sale" twice a year
when the banners, first made by a professional then by my mom, would go
up in the windows for Monday and Tuesday while the stock was priced
down. Then the store would open on Wednesday for the first day of the
sale. It was make or break time for the business. We kids had to stay
home until Dad returned from work to announce the numbers from the first
day of the sale. When we were old enough, we would go back with Dad in
the evening to help straighten out merchandise for day #2 of the sale.
And I too remember Rilie Morgan coming in to the Grafton Floral with one
of his grandsons, to pick up his bedding plants. I can see in my mind's
eye that grandsons' biceps becoming taut as he picked up the flats for
his grandpa. We Grafton Floral employees all seemed to snap to when
Rilie arrived, not because he demanded the attention but because he had
earned it as a someone who enjoyed spreading God's beauty throughout
town.
Thanks again for the memories. Congratulations on the new
great-grandson.

We got a chance to hold our newest Great-grandson last night, and, I

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RYKER VOTAVA !!
Today, Toni & Andy Votava became the proud parents of a wonderful baby
boy.
Ryker Thomas Votava weighed in at 10 pounds 2 ounces. He stands a full
21 inches tall,.... And, as I understand it, immediately after receiving
his very first spanking, Ryker began practicing to be a farmer. Just
like his grandpa Tom.
I'll have to put another seat in the walleye combine for my newest
great-grandson.
Congratulations Toni and Andy on the birth of beautiful "little" baby
boy Ryker.

Sometimes, somethings aren't, always, what they appear to be.
Take for instance the Grafton True Value advertisement in the last
Walsh County Record. Reading it, one "might" assume the reference to a
"liquidation sale", might suggest that the True Value Store is going out
of business. Of course,... that is certainly NOT TRUE.
It is true (pardon the pun) that Grafton's True Value Store is
"liquidating" some items from their inventory. That, I assume, refers to
some items none of us really wanted anyway.
So then,... that's the answer for those folks wondering why the Grafton
True Value Hardware Store is refurbishing the front of their store at
the same time they are holding a liquidation sale.
If you haven't had a chance to visit a real honest to goodness old
fashion, get just about, anything you could ever need, hardware store.
Stop by Grafton's True Value Hardware Store and check it out. And, if
you should get a chance, thank Kerry & Carole Demars for investing their
heart and sole in the future of our little community and the surrounding
area.

Yesterdays mention of the park, the flag and the former Reyleck's
store, gave Kathee Carlson reason to share the following. Kathee wrote:

the shoe department used to be, but my dad, well he could haunt the
office area, but he would rather be at the golf course!

Wagonmaster hamburgers. If, by chance, your coming to town to visit the
park or participate in True Values "Liquidation" sale anyway. Stop by
the Westside Drive Inn and have a Wagonmaster. If your into chicken,
Westsides chicken is a full five star general.

"milking" this pipeline situation. Can you believe, a room at Leonard
has been around $45-50 a night and we have always had a standing
reservation with our credit card on file to verify. This trip -
$70.00!!! yes, per night. Friends (also my age group) payed over $125
per night at AmericInn and they travel to Fla. and stay at the better
motels and have NEVER payed anything like that. Oh well, I guess it
was worth it since we really enjoyed our days there.
Do you remember dad, Rilie R. Morgan? He took care of the Masonic
grounds (east of PO on 5th) and his plantings were of the Masonic
emblem. Beautiful. He and mom often took us for rides thru
Leistikow to see the beautiful peonies, their favorite flowers for
outside. Our home at 938 Hill was surrounded with peonies and the
"rock garden" made by us kids, Jack, Ray, Jeanette, Mary and I is still
there! I believe there is a church on that corner now and was an
apothecary prior to that.
Gary, thank you again. I will look forward to your next email
with highlights of GRAFTON and updates on our beautiful city. I
couldn't have grown up in a better town!!

It's been awhile since the last Gazette. For the most part some of that
time was spent as a self appointed weather observer (sometimes adverse)
and part of the time I participated in a self appointed walleye and
small fish feeding program.
Now then, even though "the catching" hasn't been the absolute best I've
ever experienced, the fishing experience out of Arnesen's Rocky Point
Resort continues to be just as fantastic as ever, or better.
Saturday our grandson Tyler, with a bit of help from his uncle Mike,
caught a 26 inch walleye. The next day, Pat dragged one in that measured
26 and three quarter.

One of the first things I noticed when we got back to town was the work
being done on Simonson's new Subway Sandwich Station on the corner of
Hill Avenue and hiway 17. Although there is still a lot of work to do
before the grand opening, it won't be long and we'll be able to eat a
Sub while looking up & down both major hiways in town.
------------------------
Grafton's True Value Hardware Store is getting a brand new front facade
as well. The giant front windows that once gave us insight to the
fabulous fashions featured by the Reylecks clothing store, and later,
the folks that worked at True Value are being replaced by smaller, more
energy efficient ones. And, I was pleased to see that the new windows
are MARVINS WINDOWS, made right here in Grafton North Dakota.

The B & D Flooring and Carpet Cleaning Store is also getting a new face
lift. The front and west side of the building that Bill Meier built for
his Grafton Glass & Paint business will be refurbished giving our son
and daughter-in-law Brad and Denise's store a brand new look.
It's heartwarming to see the business community reinvesting in the
future of the community in which I live.

Speaking of heartwarming. Pat and I drove through Leistikow Park this
morning, and, as always I thought of my dad. I remember how he would
stand out in the park with members of the park board waving his cane at
various trees shrubs and flower beds. I remembered the time he actually
bought a specific tractor just because he believed it was the best way
to prepare and plant the area south of the swimming pool.
As I looked at the pool this morning, I couldn't help but remember Hugo
Kutz and all of the things he done for the pool, and the community, over
the years. Hugo taught me how to "patch" a high pressure water pipe with
strips from a tractor inner tube.
As we continued thru the park, I slowed a bit, to remember and
appreciate Earl and all the things he contributed to make our drive thru
the park an enjoyable one.
Then, I noticed that some of the blacktop has been removed from several
different areas throughout the park. That, I suspect, is in preparation
for the preposed new blacktop mat to be laid down in the next few weeks.
The posts bordering the drive thru the park always remind me of my good
friend and former mentor Milton Johnston. It was Milton that originally
orchestrated the method of rounding off the posts so that they would
shed water and not rot away prematurely.
HOWEVER, the really, truly, heartwarming part of my most recent trip
through Leistikow wasn't the parks beautiful grass and trees. It wasn't
the pool or the new Frisbee course. It wasn't even the fantastic
campgrounds. (with special thanks to our friends from the pipeline) The
real heartwarming part of todays spin thru the park, was when I reached
"Milton's American Flag" in flowers.
Having a floral flag in the park had been a desire of Milton Johnston's
for a number of years. One I am pleased to say, he eventually did see
accomplished. Unfortunately, for some reason, the floral flag was
omitted from the parks flower bed plantings of the past several years.
It certainly was HEARTWARMING to see it return.
Aren't memories wonderful?

Trucks and equipment from Strata Corporation are hauling the all the
dirt from three street projects into the area often referred to as the
States School Slough south of the Leistikow Park. Filling in the slough
will not only improve the overall look of the area, it will eliminate
some real serious skeeter breeding grounds as well.

Speaking of Leistikow Park. The staff responsible for it's day to day
care and maintenance are to be commended for the fantastic work they do.
Grafton can be very proud of it's Park & Rec facilities and the programs
they offer the Grafton area.
I invite everyone to take a leisurely drive through Leistikow Park and
experience the tranquil, calming, effect it can have.

Rumor has it that more and more people every day are finding the Daily
Grind, just off main on east 5th street is a fantastic place for a
coffee break and a lunch.

everyone will motor to Minto for their Quasquicetennial Celebration
Cookout.

Proceeds from the FREE WILL offering will be used to defer celebration
expenses.

buildings and grounds. Vintage Merry-go-round rides are also available.

~~ Grafton's 2008 SUMMERFEST ~~
I understand most of the final preparations for this years celebration
have been completed. Members of every age group should find this years
celebration fun and entertaining.
Events like SummerFest require significant effort and input of many
people to make them successful. Everyone in the business community is
not only asked, but to a certain degree required, to contribute and
participate if such undertakings are to come to fruitfull fruition.
To that end I often find myself wondering. Why, I wonder, isn't
businesses like Wal-Mart, Target, Menards, Loews, Old Navy and the
Columbia Mall among others, listed in the credits along with our "local"
merchants? Certainly, in my mind at least, they have gained as much, or
more, from the folks that will enjoy Grafton's SummerFest Celebration
than the local merchants that inevitably end up "footing the bill".
Everytime I drive through our local merchants parking lots, I am truly
amazed at the number of vehicles that have been purchased from a small
town dealership along the Red River. I often wonder, how much that
business contributes to, and participates in, the success of the
community in which I live.
"Small town celebrations are a lot more fun, when there is still people
left in them,.... to celebrate.
Or so it seems to me.

Some may have noticed that the Gazette has been printed with invisible
ink for the past few weeks. During that time I have been experiencing
all of the sights, sounds and weather conditions mother nature has been
able to muster.
Fishing out of Rocky Point, as always, has been absolutely
fantastic..... catching on the other hand, ran the entire gamut. The old
Walleye Combine didn't seem to have any trouble finding fish. However,..
it's operator (me) couldn't seem to coax many of the wily walleye's to
take the bait as often as I would like. Fortunately, for me anyway, the
walleye and steak at Rock Harbor Lodge are all much easier to come by
and are cooked to perfection.

There doesn't seem to be much activity around the new Subway Sandwich
store. Everything looks about like it did before I went walleye hunting.

The Extra End Patio project appears to be up and running with a bright
new white fence surrounding a sea of astro turf and patio tables.

I notice Country Realty has sold a few more houses while I was gone. It
still looks like the best way to sell a house in town, is have the folks
from the Country do it.

Speaking of houses. Delhart and Judith Nygard, along with having one of
the nicest looking lawns in town, also has one of the prettiest
"roofers" in town as well.
Evidently, when Alysia Osowski isn't busy working with Troy at
Granny's, she helps him shingle roofs.

It sure is great to see the Leistikow Park Camp Ground full. Without
question It will have a significant economic impact on our little
community and the entire area.

Pat and I stopped at the Country Smokehouse and picked up a couple
books of "RAFFLE TICKETS" good for over $2000 dollars in prizes. You can
purchase individual tickets for $5 each, or a book of five tickets for
only $20.
It's a super way to participate in the activities and festivities of
Graftons annual Summerfest Celebration.

Stan Pascke and his lovely wife Emmy will be in town Wednesday the 25.
Most of the "older" hockey players and fans will remember Stan. Although
Stan has been retired for quite some time know, he still remains current
on regional hockey and sports events.
For us "fisherpersons", Stan and Emmy still produce some of the best
"Wa-Pa" fishing spinners on the market. Stan once told me that every
single spinner he sells is absolutely guaranteed to catch something. If
not a fish,... a fisherman.

been trying to decide on just the right property to settle on. You might
consider bidding on one or more of the 14 former MinuteMan III Missile
Sites. You could fill'em full of bottle rockets and have a real bang up
fourth of July at the same time.

Speaking of nice people. We've been thinking alot about Lloyd Hanson
lately and hoping everything is going well. Somehow coffee at the lodge
just isn't the same without him. Hurry up and get back to the Rock

The Schumacher's are celebrating the 75th anniversary of their family
business.
For three quarters of a century Schumacher & Sons has played a
significant role in the business community of Grafton.
Over the years members of the Schumacher family have contributed untold
hours and resources to numerous projects and organizations around the
area.
A park on the south end of town has been named Schumacher Park,
honoring Buster for his life long contributions to the city of Grafton.
Buster and Helen Schumacher will always share a very special place in
the hearts of our family for helping us during a a time when even hope
seemed so difficult for us to reach.
To this day, David and Linda, and their organization, continues to
carry on the "Schumacher tradition" of carring for the needs of the
people the area.
Pat and I would like to extend our most heartfelt congratulations to
Dave and Linda Schumacher, and the entire Schumacher & Sons organization
for 75 years of caring and sharing.
You have made our little town a much better place to live.

The forecast for the next several days calls for fantastic fishing,
and, I just happen to have a box full of the best looking worms I've
ever seen. (Thanks to Gunner)
So,... I'm going to take those worms, and a couple pink Wa-Pa spinners
just south of Rocky Point and hook a limit of 19½ inch Walleyes for
the frypan.
And, even if I don't get my limit, I'll have a darn good time trying.

Just in case you're wondering. I use pink Wa-Pa spinners because female
walleyes are bigger than the males and females prefer pink. And,
everyone knows walleyes prefer pretty worms rather than ugly ones. Or
so it seems to me.
