Ryan Heuchert's Farmers Union Insurance Agency has moved, settled in,
and ready to serve in their new facilities on main street, between the
Strand Theater and Kutz & O'Brien. It's wonderful seeing another local
sailboat fuel storage building converted to a more aesthetically
pleasing, contributing member of Grafton's business community.
I hope many will stop in Ryan's new offices and thank him for investing
in "our" communities future.
Grafton,... "Our growing is showing."
----------------------
Saturday night I attended the annual Grafton Youth Hockey Banquet &
Raffle at Market Place on 8th. The first place prize, a Harley
Sportster, went to Shella Trontvet. The second prize, an Artic Cat ATV,
went to,... Me. The third place prize, a John Deere 115 Riding mower,
went to H. Dale Aasand of Drayton.
I would like to thank the Grafton Youth Hockey Organization for letting
me help them in their annual fund raising venture. I would especially
like to thank them, and all the wonderful business establishments that
contributed their time, energy, cash and prizes for this years MEGA
RAFFLE. It should also be noted that in years past, the VFW
organization contributed much of the funding needed for the youth hockey
program. Veterans not only fought for our freedom over seas. They gave
much to provide the resources so our youth could enjoy it.
-------------------------
The Monson School District #114 papers have found their rightful home.
>>> Gary,
I will be sending the documents from the "Monson School" to Harold
Blanchard, President of the Historical Village. I am pleased they
would like to have them and I am grateful your publication helped make
it possible. Thanks for all you do!
Best,
Scott Hove <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Scott. Without
thoughtful folks caring about the past. We would have little to look
back on, in the future.
--------------------------
Speaking of thoughtful people. Lee Ann Dolan dropped a check off from
Robert and her for Decca Mattson's benefit. Then Monday, I received a
note from Betty (Daley) Bangart saying. Please include the enclosed
check with the donations to the Becca Mattson fund. Ralph is my first
cousin.
Simply another case of wonderful folks, doing super things, for
fantastic people.

Speaking of nice people. Those that know John Aasand, know he could
talk the fuzz off a peach, without even breathing heavy. Today I found
out that he can actually write, too. John wrote. >>> Hi, I'm hearing a
rumor that vacation is over for LD (Larry Durand) and he's on his way
home. I still have the China Contract if you want to come over and take
a look at it. I should also say that one of our home town boy's is the
principal over there, and it's Jim Clark a brother to Fred Clark so you
know that he's a great guy.
Will you please put in your paper that the Grafton Federated Church is
holding their 25th annual French Toast and Sausage breakfast? And, that
the Sausage is being made by your son-in-law, the famous Dave Moe. His
breakfast sausage is so good, just take a look at me and you'll know I
like all the food.
Back to the breakfast it's Saturday, March 24th 2007 from 7am to 2pm.
Hope you stop by. Adult's $7.00 Family $14.00 thank-you in advance you
do the best advertising of anyone.
Thank-You
John <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing John. Flattery is
cheap, and, it only takes $7 and good intentions to get a great
breakfast.
--------------------------
It's happening right here in Grafton, ND.
One trip down main street and you'll notice the flags flying, Welcome
signs in merchants windows, and, curlers from no less than seven states
participating in the "U.S. Mixed National Curling Championship". Our
little community can be proud to host such an event. Grafton may not be
the largest city in the state. But when it comes to curling, Grafton is
as well know as any town in the world.
I was pleased to see True Value Hardware lead the pack displaying
"welcome curlers" signs in their store front.
The large banner in front of the curling club lists Alaska, California,
Maryland, Minnesota, No. Dak., Ohio, Washington and Wisconsin
participating in this years event. It's really great watching folks from
so many states walking up and down our community streets with their
colorful jackets representing their own specific states.
-------------------------
Caring and sharing is what the Gazette is all about. I am pleased to
share Christine's latest note. >>> Gary, I have been unable to check
emails for a few days. I want to thank Kris Molde for her kind words and
for taking the time to come check out Hastings Landing, we really
appreciate all those who have come to visit and have a bite to eat. I
also want to thank you again for your support!! Every bit of
encouragement we get makes us want to work even harder. Blessings always
and thanks again, Christine Jensen <<< Thank you for caring and sharing
Christine. I continue to hear good things about your new adventure. Keep
up the good work. Gary

This is a special week, for two of our nephews. Nick Conigliaro added
another candle to his cake yesterday, and Tom Watkins will be blowing
out one more candle today. Happy birthday guys, we love you very much.

==================================
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-----------------------
It doesn't appear as though the threat of 4 to 6 inches of snow
Thursday stopped folks from attending Denny's Food Pride Auction sale.
The weather did make it necessary for the "flying Auctioneers" to land
in Grand Forks instead of Grafton, setting back the planned start time
by an hour or so. By the time the auction got started, the parking lot
was full of cars, pickups, and, a generous array of trailers of every
size and configuration.
-----------------------
Grafton's local taxidermist, mounted an 11-foot crocodile for the
Schell Brothers Circus. The animal died while the circus was traveling
between Edmore and Park River. Taxidermist W.H. Williams is recognized
as one of the best in the country. (borrowed from the 25 years ago
column of the June, 1955 Walsh County Record)
------------------------
Marian shared the following suggestion for the Monson School #114
papers Scott Hove wrote about the other day.
She wrote. >>> Subject: Home for the papers from Monson's School
Dist.114
Dear Gary, Read the little story about papers from Monson's
School. I believe the logical place for these papers would be at
Heritage Village. They can add it to all the history papers and
miscellaneous items that they have. Now, more than ever, since they
have Jugville brought in there, it will attract a lot of tourist etc.
So this is my sentiments about this. I am an officer of the
WalshCounty Historical Society and trulythink this would be the
best place for all such documents. Thank you. Sincerely, Marian
Hajicek. <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Marian. I couldn't
agree more.
-----------------------
The other day I mention the "possibility" that someone 'may' have
purchased Jan and Hank Korczak's home, or, that they might have returned
home early.
NOT!!! But I'm guessing we can take the following note to the bank.
They wrote. >>> Gary, Jan & Hank Korczak would like to thank you for
sending us the Gazette. No, we are not home yet, my tenant had the
driveway cleaned, so that he could check our house. We will be back at
about 15th of April. We are still looking for someone to buy our house,
hope we will have some luck this summer. The temperature here is 85 to
90 degrees. Our friend from Park River, ND Sanford & Mayvis Jallo, would
like to be a member of the Gazette, Thank You <<< Thank you, for
putting that rumor to rest. I am pleased to welcome Sanford and Mayvis
to the Gazette family. I hope you warned them not to expect to much,...
to often.

A good 39 cent breakfast hasn't been around since the depression.
Subject: farmer share breakfast.
Gary: Would you please announce the farmer share breakfast sponsored
by the ND Northeast chapter of Ag Women and the Grafton Chamber of
Commerce, to be held Monday, March 19 from 7 am to 9:30 am at St. John's
Parish Center. Menu: Scrambled eggs, sausage, rolls, potatoes,
milk, juice and coffee. Cost is the actual share that farmers receive
39 cents. Lots of good food and great door prizes. Everyone
welcome. Judy Keeley <<< I don't mean to nitpick, but I read and
read, and read the menu and couldn't find the mention of sugar anywhere.
Let it be said, in no uncertain terms, that there will be American
Crystal Sugar there too.
-------------------------
I'm sure glad the mailman made it through the snow drifts yesterday. I
received my recertification of my life insurance policy. That was a good
thing. Another wonderful thing was receiving a note from Pat & Bill.
They wrote: >>> Hi Gary, Please add this check to the Becca Mattson
Fund. We are keeping them in our prayers. Pat & Bill Holt, Rochester
Washington <<< Now isn't that a fantastic message to get on a North
Dakota snowstormy day? Thank you so much Pat & Bill. Your monetary
contribution is very much appreciated. Your prayers are priceless.

Some have already responded, and, I'm sure many more will. However,
just in case some folks missed it earlier. I'll send out another

Birthdays take on different meanings, as each one passes. Hence, some

you are as young as you feel. So,.. if you really want to feel young,...
feel a baby.

The Gazette is for caring and sharing. Sharing the good things people
say and do, is particularly easy for me. Caring about the wonderful
people that makeup the portion of the world we occupy, is also
especially easy and gratifying. Sometimes, however, caring and sharing
some things, is more difficult than caring and sharing others. Such is
the case today. I must admit, we were saddened when we opened the
following note. However, we are extremely pleased that Don cared enough
to share it with us.
Don wrote. >>>

Signs of spring are already showing up around town. Blackbirds can
be seen bathing in area puddles upon their return from the sunny south.
A few snowbirds have started returning as well. Art and Dody Tallackson
returned to their nest late last week, and, the way it looks, Art hasn't
forgotten how to shake dice over the winter.
Potholes are also starting to 'spring up' (pardon the pun) on area
streets. The person that said there are only 44 sounds in the English
Language obviously never had to drive North Dakota streets in the
spring. Every pothole seems to generate yet another sound. Some,.. in
the english language and some,.. from the vehicles trying to traverse
them.

The building that once housed Gillespie's Meat Market and later
the Grandy Travel Agency is presently being refurbished, redecorated and
will become the new home for Ryan Heuchert's Farmers Union Insurance
Agency. Crews could be seen working late into the night last night,
cleaning windows and applying a fresh coat of paint to Butch Gillespie's
former Butcher Shop.
It won't be long and Ryan's newest location will add yet another
view to Grafton's downtown facade. Giving us one more reason to say,
"our growing is showing."

Becca's mother Elaine, & Ralph & Violet (grandparents) were

Thanks for the Gazette, we enjoy it. Glenna and Harvey Tallackson. <<<
Thanks a million Glenna, for your kind words, and for your wonderful

your best wishes get to Becca.
I would also like to encourage anyone that can, please keep Becca

So far, Scott Hove's note regarding papers from Monson's School

Gary,
Please tell Scott Hove that if he can't find anyone interested in
Grafton that I am a member of the Red River Valley Geneological Society,
the Bismarck-Mandan Historical and Genealogical Society and the North
Dakota State Geneological Society and I "WILL" find a home for these
records. The State Historical Society in Bismarck would love to have any
records that we can not find a proper home for. Let me know.

County Auditor would like the records Scott is referring to. The Auditor
is also acting as County Superintendent of Schools. Sharon Kinsala's

Bev <<< Thanks Bev, I was hoping that maybe there would be a place at
Heritage Village, or someplace in the county that would want them. Then
again, maybe not. ------------------------
======== HAPPYBIRTHDAY======== ~~~~~~ JENNIFER HARTJE ~~~~~~
Today Jenny celebrates the anniversary of her birth. I could tell from
Jenny's very first spanking in the delivery room that she was 'training'
her voice for something. She grew up to be one of Grafton's prettiest
hockey cheerleaders. Jenny shares the same birthday as Neil Sadaka
(1939). The hit song Blame it on the Rain by Milli Vanilli could be
heard up and down the hospital halls, after she fell asleep. Jennifer
joined 226,545,805 legal United States Citizens the day she was born and
even so,.. she was a very special little girl.

I just heard on the news that Grand Forks' Mayor Brown will be giving

Grafton ever have "state of the town" reports?
--------------------------
It's no longer a rumor, or a secret, that the Country Smokehouse is in
the process of remodelling the building Russell Lykken once sold cars
for Glenn Mohagen in. The building, originally known as Mohagen Motor
Company, was later purchased by Russell and he continued to operate
their until 1951 when his 'new' Lykken Pontiac Dealership was
constructed across the street.
Since then, Wilson Bros. Auto parts occupied the facility, as did
Filter Care and eventually it became part of the Heritage Ford Chrysler
Dealership.
Country Smokehouse will carry a full line of freshly cut, quality
meats. They will also be making all of the Country Smokehouse Sausages
as well as several other smoked products on a daily basis.

Speaking of history and the way it was. Scott Hove sent the following
note, with a hope. >>> Greetings from Las Vegas!
Gary, I was looking through some files yesterday and came across a
number of Treasurer*s Reports related to School District 114. I
believe this was the one-room school house formerly located about one
mile north of South Trinity Lutheran Church and just north of the former
farmstead belonging to the Monson family.
Anyway, my grandfather, Albert Hove (he spelled it Hovey at the time)
was the District Clerk and thus kept the records which eventually wound
up in my father*s files (Millard Hove). Other names on the documents
include Mons Monson, President; Albert Viger, Henry Lee, County
Treasurer Tollack, etc.
Is there someone at the Historical Society who might like these? I
don*t know who to contact so if your readers have any ideas I would love
to get these things back to where they belong! I can be reached at:
scott@scotthove.com
Thanks! Scott Hove <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Scott.
I gotta think someone, would really want to have those records saved for
posterity. I'm not sure who, or where they would be best kept Scott.

at the same time let us know how the last Heritage Village Fish Fry
project went. Right Harold?

It's always great hearing from folks that would like to receive the

It's always wonderful hearing from a Walsh County Record subscriber.
>>> Subject: Shivercity Gazette
Hello Gary, Ann Marie Settingsgard sent Susan and I an e-mail in
which she told us about your Shivercity Gazette. She included your
e-mail address so that we could be added to your listto receive
e-mail news. We are still subscribers to the Walsh County Record and
find it interesting to read what is happening in and around Grafton.
We would like to be added to your list and are looking forward to
receiving the Shivercity Gazette.
Robert and Susan (Countryman) Torkelson <<< Thanks a million for being
so brave Robert. As a matter of fact, several times over the course of
the past few years I have mentioned both the Torkelson and Countryman
families. The readers digest version of that of course would be. Our
community is a much better place to live because of the contributions
your families have made to it. P.S. Please keep reading the Record

This one, from Don in sun country, was especially surprising.
Subject: Re: Hank and Jan want in--- your pool-
Gary,
Today the local KC'S had another of their spaghetti dinners at Holy
Cross Church.
Other guests at our table, by surprise, were Hank and Jan Korczak,
Grafton, ND. (Their address in the summer time.) Would you please add
them to your list?
I had asked them if they were getting the "GAZETTE"? They were unaware
and immediately asked if I would send you their local e-mail address. It
was great seeing them again! Don Kitzman <<< Thanks a million Don,
Of course I will be pleased to include Hank and Jan to the Gazette
family list. I mentioned earlier that your note was especially so maybe
I should explain.
Pat and I had just returned from our, regular, sometime very often,
drive around town. As we passed by Hank & Jans home, I noticed their
driveway and entrance was shovelled squeaky clean. I tuned to Pat and
said, "either the Korczak's are home from the south early,... or,
someone else is planning on moving in. Of course, there might be a third
option as well, but then again I'm sure Hank or Jan will let us know
that one. Right Hank?
++++
And last but not least. I am pleased to welcome Marlene and Dale Aasand
back into the Gazette family.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-----------------------
In case you haven't had a chance to read this weeks edition of The
Walsh County Record yet, please do. If you don't have a copy, pick one
up.
The latest Record edition has several pictures throughout, many of them
are in color, and several interesting articles. The Records Sports &
More section rivals those of cities much larger than ours.
I was especially pleased to read Todd Morgans editorial titled, "Keep
Your Fingers and Toes Crossed". Yes, inspite of what some may say,
Grafton WILL have another flood. It may well be the biggest one ever.
And, unfortunately, it may well go down in the history books as the one
nobody thought we needed to prepare for.
It's time "our" city leaders decide whether in fact they want to lead
us safely thru the 21st century. OR, down the flood ridden path to
"River City".
++++
Kelly Smith's article (rebuttal) on law enforcement issues should also
give us reason to take heed. That too, was a super article, one I
certainly agree with.
++++
The 'rumor' about a new liquor livery in the former Trax building has
come to fruition. It'll be called the Last Chance Saloon & Grill.
And, according to word in the Record, KJ Welding will begin operations
in the south half of the former Hvidsten building.
++++
Unfortunately, I looked and looked and I couldn't find Sue Matcha's
column anywhere in the Record. I hope that's because she merely on
vacation and nothing serious.
++++
Something else I couldn't find in the Record, or anywhere else in town
for that matter. Except for one small paid advertisement, in the Record,
that is.
It seems there will be a Men's Curling Bonspiel in Grafton this
weekend. Yes, it is, just, a curling bonspiel, I guess. No big deal, I
guess. The fact that there is almost no, (not any) visible community
recognition of the event must indicate the three day bonspiel really is
insignificance.
HOWEVER, the Grafton Curling Club will also be hosting the MIXED
NATIONAL CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS from Monday, March 19 thru Sunday, March
25. The mixed Nationals...... Some might consider that uneventful, on
the other hand it is exactly the kind of things that puts communities
like ours 'on the map', so to speak.
The kind of things we should be promoting instead of ignoring. The kind
of things no-one can know, unless 'we' tell them. We should have welcome
flags and banners welcoming all over town, extending our gracious
appreciation to those that attend.
++++
Speaking of attending, and appreciating those that do. I may have
simply missed it, however, I understand Grafton plays host to several
area schools from Mayville/Portland to the Canadian border. Some 500
musical participants will fill our schools with young artist's of the
musical persuasion. AGAIN, I could find absolutely no indication,
anywhere, on any street, or in any local business, that would give 'our'
gracious visitors the least possible indication that we are pleased they
are here.
It leaves me with the inclination and indication of feeling that the
lack of inspiration, leadership and desire of the Grafton business
community may need re-evaluation.
------------------------
Speaking of re-evaluation, of sorts. If it's been awhile since you
shopped at Wally's Super Market in Grafton. You just might be surprised
when you walk in there door now. Wally's has spent a considerable amount
of time, energy, and money, cleaning up and rearranging the Grafton
store. In short, it's cleaner, brighter and whiter. They have redesigned
the front of the store providing for a much more inviting appearance.
CONGRATULATIONS WALLY'S.....
As Pat and I left Wally's this morning, we had the opportunity to
visit, for a moment, with Gail Sevigny (formerly from Denny's). It was
great seeing her warm smile, thanking us for shopping at Wallys, and, as
we left the store she wished us a wonderful day. AND, she meant it.
-------------------------
I have had several notes asking for Becca Mattson's caring bridge
address. It is,
www.caringbridge.org/visit/beccamattson
Please keep Becca, and her entire family in your prayers.

Activity can be seen around the former Trax on 5th building. I can't be
certain what's going on inside, although someone has shovelled the snow
away from the entrances. The large for sale sign is gone and the foul
language has been removed from the front facade as well.
Rumor has it, folks there, could be partaking of distilled spirits
before this years 125 celebration. I haven't heard mention whether the
name will remain the same, or, if the former Berts Lounge will acquire
yet another new name.
--------------------------
The former Mid-Town Motel complex, Walsh County Bank Building, Hvidsten
Implement building, Twetes Dry Cleaners, Johnson Used Car Sales, Harts
Machine & Manufacturing facilities, the VFW Clubrooms and the former
Gillespie Meat Market building all continue to be used as sailboat fuel
storage. Although the Hvidsten, Johnson and Gillespie buildings are
scheduled to be occupied within the next month or so.

Within minutes after sending out yesterdays Gazette. Ralph Kingsbury
returned this note. >>> So, where can we send a check for the Mattson

I responded to Ralph's note with the following.
Thanks a million Ralph. If you want you can make a check out to the
Becca Mattson Fund, and send it to me at 764 Birch Crt Grafton, ND

deliver any donations we receive at that time.

for Becca's cause.

The Mattson name along with many Mattson family members have
been an integral part of our community for longer than most folks can
remember. As early as 1918 when Eddie and Bennie Mattson started Mattson
Bros. Garage selling and repairing Ford cars and Hart Parr tractors.
Later the Mattson name was connected with the Hupmobile automobile.
Mattson Implement Co., originally owned by Bennie and later taken over
by Truman and Elvin. They handled the Minneapolis Moline and Allis
Chalmers line. Later Elvin and his sons, Allen and Maurel also became
significant players on the Grafton business scene.
Eddie Mattson's 15 year contribution as a city councilman combined
with his 56 years of service to the Grafton Volunteer firedepartment
pales when compared to what might be considered "the most important
contribution our city has ever enjoyed," that being credited with saving
the municipal light plant for the city of Grafton.
I have known a great many members of the Mattson family over the
years. I have never known one of them to ask for anything for
themselves. In fact, It has been my observation that they tend to work
very hard at doing more than their fair share for others.
I am saying all this because,... I truly believe it's something
someone needs to say. Because I truly believe there is, or certainly
should be, merit in the old saying, "what goes around, comes around."
I'm saying it, because Becca, the beautiful young daughter
of Steve and Elaine Mattson was in a very serious automobile accident
and is in need of our prayers and our help. I received the following
information, and was asked if I might share it with members of the
Gazette Family. Would I? There should be no doubt!

Most schools in the area started closing by noon Thursday. Some even
announced, at the same time, they would not open Friday either.
By late afternoon yesterday, I think we had more tractors plowing snow
around town than there is working in fields during the summer.
A foot or more of snow covered most driveways and sidewalks in the area
yesterday. When I returned home from "solving the problems of the world"
at Granny's (coffee) I was surprised to see that Denny Schneider had
already been by our house and he had blown our drive and sidewalks
clean. Thanks a million Denny, we really appreciate it. I must also
thank the folks working with our city street department, for their
fantastic efforts in keeping our community streets open.
-----------------------
I don't believe I've ever seen a more beautiful display of icicles
hanging from a greater array of buildings as I have the past few days.
Some icicles stretch from the eves to the ground. I noticed one building
where the icicles are not only extremely long, but they have actually
been bent by the wind into the shape of the letter C. Maybe our local
photographers can get a few shots around town for the paper, and
posterity.
-------------------------
Rumor has it, another new business will be coming to town soon. Lord
knows, we can always use another new business in town.
-------------------------
Businesses come and go for a multitude of reasons. Often we try to
attribute their demise to one or two specific factors. When in
actuality, often, it is the culmination of numerous factors all working
together. That being said, there is without question, one major factor
that can hinder the success of a business more than any other. That
factor of course is simply, "the lack of business".
The loss to a community, of any business, is normally never beneficial.
Unfortunately, most folks do not believe they have anything at all to do
with a businesses demise. In reality, nothing could be further from the
trueth.
Every community, needs EVERY business it has if it has any hope to
remain in existence. If business is to continue to function, it will be
the people in the community that will control their destiny. "USE 'em OR
LOSE 'em."

I received the following note in regard to the closing of the Dollar
Sense Store.
>>> Subject: GREED
Dear Gary,
Seeing my nephew, Mark Russell's name in today's Shivercity
Gazette, as being forced out of business by the BIG merchants in
Grafton, did NOT make my day. One word comes to mind in regards to the
Big Merchants is 'GREED' and I consider that a big sin. Do they
want Grafton to regress? If so, they are on the right track.
Grafton was always a great small town and I loved growing up
there. This latest business closing hurt me deeply. I visited them
at their Dollar Sense store two years ago, shortly after their opening,
and they were doing extremely well. Now the green-eyed, jealous
monsters have moved in to take over.
We really appreciate getting your newsletter, Gary. Keep up the
good work. You are one of the finest assets Grafton has.
Thanks for your time.
Sincerely Virginia G. Upham
Hot Springs Village, Arkansas
You may use my entire letter and sign my name, if you wish. <<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Virginia. I copied your note
and I hand delivered it to Mark yesterday afternoon. Then, we (Pat and
I) spent a half an hour going thru the Dollar Sense store on main
street. I marvelled at the assortment of items the store has to offer.
Several times as I walked the isles, I asked myself, what would it take,
or, what could someone do to keep Graftons very first Dollar store
functioning in our community. I wondered what, or if, the Grafton
business community has done to encourage the Dollar Sense operation.
My guess is, it just might not be to late to stop the exodus of yet,
another reason to stop and shop in Grafton.
Or so it seems to me.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TREVOR LYNN MOE
I should have sent this out yesterday, the day Trevor actually turned
two. For reasons, too many to fully explain, I didn't.
Trevor is our "Bakers Dozen" grandson. (for the non-bakers, that's
13th) Trevor was born at twenty minutes to midnight. And, I can assure
you, that wasn't the only night Trevor has kept us up late. He is a
energetic, happy, healthy, already smarter than his grandpa (Moe) young
boy that has brought the Moe gene pool much pleasure,... among other
things.

Today is a very special day, for a very special person. It is the day
my wife Pat will celebrate the anniversary of her birth. And, it will be

her. Pat is the Architect of our gene pool, the root of our family
tree. She is our family's anchor, and of course she's always here for
me.

will be a great big deal.

--------------------------
Yup, it's true. I read all about it on the front page of Wednesday's
Walsh County Record. According Editor Todd Morgans article in the
Record, the Dollar Sense store will close sometime in April. Grafton
Mayor Todd Burianek attributes the closing to competition. "It's a very
competitive market. Certainly the new dollar store(Family Dollar) next
to the Ice Box had an impact as well as shortly after Dollar Sense
opened Pamida, Alco and Wally's began having their own dollar section,'
he said. "I don't think this closing is such a reflection on the Grafton
economic cycle as much as fierce competition within the community."
(FIERCE COMPETITION WITHIN THE COMMUNITY?) >I wrote that part<
Store manager Mark Russell was quoted as saying, "We just didn't have
enough business to justify keeping open."
All in all it gives me reason to remind us.
-- Small towns,... Use 'em or lose 'em --
------------------------
I particularly enjoyed Sue Matcha's "Life goes on" column in this weeks
Record. Sue wrote about memories, or a walk down memory lane. I too
think memories are wonderful. (As a matter of fact, I just remembered
something I overheard in a conversation between a bunch of ladies back
when I was to young to understand what it meant. As I remember it, one
lady said, "isn't it amazing how fast little boys go from needing
mammaries to making memories?", or something like that.
Anyway, yes Sue, I believe the Gibson store did start out on the corner
of 8th and Hill (across the street from Kings Grocery). The building
originally housed the Wilson & Dougherty Studebaker Automobile
Dealership. And also Sue, with some promotion, and a lot of pleading, we
just may be able to talk Tom Henriksen into holding another 9 cent take
a chance night at the Strand during our 125 year celebration this
summer.
------------------------
I seems my rendition of our second game in the State High School Hockey
tournament gave Ron reason to share the following. >>> He wrote
I was going to write the other day when I read the Gazette and heard
that the Spoilers Hockey team had lost their game at state due to an
official's call. I have coached, been an official, and a parent watching
his boys play sports. I have never really believed that they lost their
games because of an official. These Men and Women are doing their best
to call a game by the rules and fairly to their best ability. Sure they
make mistakes, but don't we all. Why is it that those of us who are
still living sports lives through young people, blame officials for the
lose. Why can't it be that the other team just played a little better.
It is hard to get officials to work games and one of the reasons is that
they never hear, "good job". Instead they are yelled at, cussed at by
adult fans that are supposed to be setting an example for our young
adults. Just my opinion, but I need to say something. Ron
<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Ron. Your comments gave me
cause to revisit my earlier statement in the Gazette. I wondered if, in
fact, I was reliving sports through someone else. I don't think I was.
What I said earlier was, "Especially in light of the fact that there
were very few penalties in the entire contest. It would be hard for me
to believe that the instant the official called the play, he must have
known that he had also decided the outcome of that game.
Yes, a penalty was committed to be sure, however, unlike numerous
other times throughout the game when a penalty 'might' have been called
and wasn't. To change the dynamics with less than 1½ minutes to go,
seems irrational."
I certainly can agree Ron, that hollering and shouting at officials
during a sporting event is in bad taste. I seriously doubt that there's
an athletic official anywhere that doesn't know, or doesn't expect to be
reminded of a call,... when it is made outside the norm.
We all know that some officials "let them play" while others will
require penalties for heavy breathing. I can, and do, go along with both
approaches. I struggle however, when an official allows several
offences, on both sides, to go unanswered throughout the entire game.
Then, as I've said before, especially when the game is tied and so close
to the final bell. The official makes a call that he had overlooked so
many times before.
If questioning that process, causes a shortage of athletic officials.
Then maybe some of those officials need a short course in anger
management.
I am a firm believer in a pat on the back, an atta-boy, "good job" and
a gosh darn golly gee whiz you really did a great job. On the other
hand, not pointing out areas of concern or differences of opinion
doesn't solve any problems. It simply creates more of them. Most folks,
in most professions, work hard, to the best of their ability. I know of
no profession that allows individuals to function, "under glass"
untouchable, or unquestionable. In fact, almost everyones abilities are
tested on a daily bases. Sometimes, I'd guess, those tests even
determine a persons inabilities.
Or so it seems to me.
