Several more displays were set up in Leistikow park Monday. I noticed
that Santa is back under the shower again this year. It looks great
Mike.

If I remember right, Orpha & Herbert Bertsch came to Grafton in 1963.
Their "mission", for want of a better term, was to hone and sharpen the
minds of the youth in our community. I'm sure anyone that knows the
Bertsch's would agree. Their mission was accomplished. Unfortunately,
Monday morning, as Herb walked by our table at Granny's, as he's done,
almost daily, for the past several years. He stopped, and, with a tear
in his eye said, "It looks like we are going to be moving to Jamestown."
It seems, according to Herb, his nephews want Orpha and Herb closer to
them in Jamestown.
The Bertsch's have been our neighbors for many years. We'll be saddened
to see them go. If that must be, we can only wish them the very best in
their new home and adventure.

It seems Rita has come up with a reason for all the ladies in town last
Saturday.

Saturday was The Squire Shop fashion show and brunch. It was the largest
fashion show we ever had. We packed the Marketplace. I am happy to say
we are doing our job for economic development. Over half of the 200
people attending the fashion show were from other towns including:
Crookston, Grand Forks, Larimore, Thief River, Cavalier, Walhalla,
Minto, Park River, Northwood, Fargo, Drayton, Pembina. Several Grand
Forks ladies learned about The Squire Shop at the Alerus where we had a
booth and participated in The Ultimate Girls Day out fashion show. We
worked very hard to entertain them. We showed them many fashion and gift
ideas and I think they left feeling an urge to shop Grafton. It seems
that ladies love to come to Grafton to shop, to be entertained and they
know they will receive friendly service. Rita Amiot <<< Thanks a million
for caring and sharing Rita. I would most certainly agree, there
definitely were lots of ladies in town Saturday. You Rita, and we, have
much to be proud of in the Squire Shop. We have much to be proud of in
Grafton,...period.
Unfortunately, one day, does not a prosperous year make. Every business
in Grafton, should, and must, follow your lead and hope for the same
results.
Or so it seems to me.

The Federated Church Chili Feed brought the following. >>>
Concerning the Chili Cook Off:
Pastor Lee of the Federated Church announced in church on Sunday that
he too was not aware there were 12 different kinds of chili, but that he
welcomes them,... with a Rolaids concession stand. :) <<< It might not
hurt to have some pepto-bizmol in that stand as well.

Speaking of Pastor Lee. He wanted to share the following. >>> My wife
and I were with friends the other evening for supper and the subject
came up of the rules and regulations for passing stopped school busses
and what to do if you see an ambulance with red lights flashing.
Since I drive a school bus it's amazed me how many do not know what to
do if they see a stopped school bus. If the bus is stopped but no
overhead red lights are flashing then it's alright to proceed. If the
school bus is flashing overhead yellow lights then you can be sure that
bus is preparing to stop. If the bus is stopped and the overhead red
lights are flashing and the side stop sign is extended then it is
required by law that the bus not be passed by any vehicle from either
direction. The bus remains stopped with overhead lights flashing and
side stop sign extended until the passenger is safely sitting in their
seat. If a bus driver observes a car passing a stopped school bus
with red lights flashing and side stop sign extended, that bus driver is
required to take the license plate information and turn that information
over to the highway patrol. Some of the bus drivers make special
notation of the address where the bus was illegally passed, make
and color of vehicle, if the driver is male or female, and which way the
bus was headed to indicate if the car passed from behind the bus or in
front. I believe the minimum fine for passing a stopped school bus is
$50 plus 6 points off your license. If you pass a stopped school bus
with red lights flashing and stop sign extended and you see the driver
looking at your license plate and writing you can be sure you'll have a
visit from a highway patrolman within the month if not that day.
When an ambulance is coming up behind you or approaching you with red
lights flashing then vehicles are to pull over and stop. I've been a
member of several ambulance crews around the state and have observed
people refusing to pull over or to give the ambulance the right of
way. What I would do when I was driving and something like this
happened was to radio in the license plate number to the local
sheriffs department or highway patrol. I would hope that if one of my
loved ones were in the back of that ambulance in need of emergency
medical help that the roadway would be made clear to have that ambulance
safely and quickly arrive at the medical facility.
Hope this helps with some of the questions some may have about stopping
for school busses and ambulance services.

Thanks for sharing Grafton news in this great email format. Your
recent note about early "holiday decorations" brought back memories of
annual treks to purchase the family Christmas tree, which was for years
the responsibility of me and my dad, Harold Bliss. He was very
particular and very patient in these selections, so we twirled a lot of
frozen flat trees while guessing how the branches would look once they
thawed. All the while I was jumping up and down trying to keep my feet
from freezing and rubbing cold fingers against even colder cheeks. There
were no early decorations at our home. In deference to Rosanne's special
day, we waited until after her December 13 birthday before starting. By
then the tree had stood in a bucket of water long enough that we could
appreciate (or not) the result of our careful selection. If we had
misjudged, the bad side went against the wall; if we had seriously
misjudged, more decorations filled the voids. Remembering how cold North
Dakota can be in December, I can appreciate taking advantage of the
current nice weather to get the job done early! Joy V. Bliss,

Several folks took advantage of yesterdays nice weather by putting out
their holiday decorations.
Why, how and when one should decorate seems to create a problem for
some folks. Especially, it seems, folks in small towns. Some believe
"holiday" decorations shouldn't be put out, lit up and or enjoyed until
they have stuffed themselves with turkey and cranberries.
Obviously that isn't true with the business communities of the Grand
Cities to the south. And, I might add, a few businesses in "our" own
mini metropolis as well.
Every year I find myself questioning the logic of our local Chamber of
Commerce "suppressing" decorating and even promoting the holiday season
until after the head gets chopped off a turkey. Large retailers,
including some in Grafton, have been decorated and displaying "holiday"
items for several weeks already.
As a matter of fact, if the trueth be known, some folks have already
finished their holiday shopping, many are almost done. Further more,
most folks have, at the very least, done some holiday shopping. To me,
that begs the question. Why, isn't our chamber promoting "holiday
shopping" in Grafton already? Why, has our business community leaders
decided to let the giants to the south, reap our recompense? Or so it
seems to me.

I firmly believe our community would benefit significantly by setting
up the seasons decorations and corresponding light shows earlier. Aside
from the fact that it would give many more people the opportunity to
enjoy them for a longer period of time. The weather conditions favorable
for setting them up is "normally" much better earlier.
Having said all that, I was disheartened to receive the following note
from Wally DeSautel. Wally's wonderful whimsical display of Disney
Characters, among others, is not only the largest display in the park,
it's worth the drive to come and see it. I am sharing Wally's message
with everyone in hopes that it may help deter addition vandalism. >>>

I took your suggestion on putting up the display for Christmas early.
I went to the park today (Friday) to check things out and the sight was
enough to make me give up. About a third or better were out, one cord
was cut and 8 fixtures are shot plus many many bulbs were broken. It is
so sad a few have no respect for others property. Most people really
appreciate the work put in the displays. It is something Grafton has to
offer its citizens and those that visit our town.
I have many more in the painting stage but really wonder if it's
worth the effort. Gary I am not alone in this problem, others have
given up, three told me theirs were destroyed last year and they would
not do it again this year. Is this another failure in Grafton ?????

I'm sure everyone can understand Wally's frustrations. Knowing Wally
as I do, I know he won't quit. As a matter of fact, Wally, I believe,
will look at the recent destruction as reason for even more
construction. Already his display is bigger and better than ever. I
suspect, Wally is working hard at increasing his wonderful Leistikow
Park holiday display as this is being written.

Speaking of displays in the park. I notice that the Extra End and A & B
technologies have teamed up and set up a display in the park. I know all
about the Extra End, I'm not sure who the A & B Technology folks are. It
sounds like it could be a group of scientist formulating a new fangled
drink. Anyway, I'm hoping to see the giant diamond from Golden Harvest
Jewelry this year. The park just wasn't the same last year without it.

In case you missed it. Mid-Continent Cable Co. took down their big
tower west of town last Friday. It seems they don't need big towers any
longer. I guess they figure they can get as good, or better reception
from a dish. It makes me wonder why everyone doesn't just use that same
logic.

Something special must have been going on in Grafton Saturday.
Mainstreet had more women running in and out of stores than you could
shake a stick at. It almost looked like there was a sale on grandkids
and everyone was scurrying to get one more for Christmas.

According to the radio, we can expect to pay a few more cents a gallon
for pickup propellant. Most places in town are at $2.19,... yet this
morning.

The other day I watched a television program covering several years of
interviews with Barbara Walters. One of the last questions she asked of
many was, "How would you want to be remembered?". Every time I hear a
question like that I'm fascinated by the answer. Of course, it goes
without saying, that kind of question is always directed at "people of
means". If you know what I mean? Although there are almost as many
variations to the answers as there are questions. It fascinates me that
with few, if any, exceptions the answers all start out with, "I would
hope I could be remembered ---------."
Of course I will never gain that kind of status, the kind that would
give people reason to ask me that question. However, that night, while
doing research in the our corporate library. I asked myself that very
question. I'll admit, while trying to resolve the question, I did feel
an ever so slight pressure. Then, just as the pressure started to
diminish, the answer began to appear. "It's not important to me, if
people remember me. What is important to me, is that people remember
some of the things I've done." Because, "It's not how many times we go
around in life, that's important. It's how many people we help along the
way."

Everyone that attended the Far Off Broadway play at Central School last
week said it was absolutely FANTASTIC. Of course it was. Because
everyone involved with it,... was FANTASTIC too.

Although the next couple of events are a few days away. It doesn't hurt
to know ahead of time so you can mark your calendars. The first one

North Dakota Pottery Collectors Society is coming to Grafton to give the
public a Pottery Road Show, on Sunday, December 3, @ 2PM at the Heritage
Village, Hwy 17 West. They will have a time set for questions and
also appraisals if anyone would want to bring along some of their
pottery pieces to have appraised. They will show pottery from 8
different sources of our states pottery. This sounds like it
could be a very interesting time so try to come for the show. There
will be refreshments by the Carnegie Regional Library and The Walsh
County Historical Society who are sponsoring this program. See you

If stuffing the lawn mower in the back of the garden shed was any
indication winter "might" be on the way. Watching, local railroad crews
unload a giant railroad snowplow on the crossing east of city hall must
be the "guarantee" winter isn't far away. Or so it seems to me.

The front windows of the old Tollack Furniture Store are still covered
with brown wrapping paper. Although, If you look real close, however,
you can see the recent addition of two letter H's on the front door. I
don't have a clue what the H's might stand for.
Then, while researching a special project, in the Gazette library. It
occurred to me,.. that I might find that answer in Wednesday's Walsh
County Record. Now I don't receive the Wednesday's Record til the mail
comes Thursday, but I was pretty sure, (cause it is news, right?). The
answers, to all the questions, about the store behind the brown wrapping
paper, with the newly applied double H's, could certainly be found in
the Record.
NOPE, I looked and I looked and I couldn't find anything with two H"s
in the Record anywhere. I guess I was totally wrong. The new business,
now being referred to as "The Double H" (by me anyway) must not be news
at all. Cause, if it was, it would have been in the Record, I think. Or
so it seems to me.

Speaking of main street businesses. I inadvertently proved one old
adage wrong. A picture "might" be worth a thousand words, IF, the
picture is mentioned in the first place. I should have mentioned the
fabulous pictorial display's in the windows of the Steve Larson Studio,
and, those exhibited in the windows of Tweten's Photography as well.
Both operations contribute significantly to the facade of downtown
Grafton. For the most part, the management and staff of Grafton's main
street establishment's can be proud of their projected demeanor.

A TRIBUTE TO COURAGE....
State Senator Elton W. Ringsak received the President's Trophy from
President Gerald Ford. It is one of the nation's highest honor, being
named "Handicapped American of the year." An Eagle Scout, high school
letterman and holding a BS degree in commercial law, are but a few of
Elton's lifetime accomplishments. He was wounded, by shrapnel, four
times in the North African campaign and returned to duty each time.
A artillery shell exploded over his head at Monte Cassino, tearing into
the left side of his brain causing total paralysis of his right side.
As a soldier, Elton has the distinction of being one of the most
decorated veterans to serve in World War ll. He received five purple
hearts, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, two Distinguished Service
Crosses, the French Croix de Guerre, the Italian Military Valor Cross,
the Presidential Citation, the White Legion of Honor, and four European
Theater Operations medals.
Lieutenant colonel Elton W. Ringsak a distinguished soldier, super
attorney and a darn fine statesman. He was, a "Hell-of-a-man", and,...
he'd been there,... and back. Our community, our state, and our country
are a much better place because of Elton W. Ringsak. I am pleased to
say, not only have I worked for Elton, he too, has worked for me. I am
pleased to have had the opportunity to share space in this world with
such a man, and, I'm proud having been able to call him my friend.
Elton was laid to rest at Washington's Arlington Cemetery. I was also
privileged to visit Eltons final resting place as well.

If stuffing the lawn mower in the back of the garden shed was any
indication winter "might" be on the way. Watching, local railroad crews
unload a giant railroad snowplow on the crossing east of city hall must
be the "guarantee" winter isn't far away. Or so it seems to me.

The front windows of the old Tollack Furniture Store are still covered
with brown wrapping paper. Although, If you look real close, however,
you can see the recent addition of two letter H's on the front door. I
don't have a clue what the H's might stand for.
Then, while researching a special project, in the Gazette library. It
occurred to me,.. that I might find that answer in Wednesday's Walsh
County Record. Now I don't receive the Wednesday's Record til the mail
comes Thursday, but I was pretty sure, (cause it is news, right?). The
answers, to all the questions, about the store behind the brown wrapping
paper, with the newly applied double H's, could certainly be found in
the Record.
NOPE, I looked and I looked and I couldn't find anything with two H"s
in the Record anywhere. I guess I was totally wrong. The new business,
now being referred to as "The Double H" (by me anyway) must not be news
at all. Cause, if it was, it would have been in the Record, I think. Or
so it seems to me.

Speaking of main street businesses. I inadvertently proved one old
adage wrong. A picture "might" be worth a thousand words, IF, the
picture is mentioned in the first place. I should have mentioned the
fabulous pictorial display's in the windows of the Steve Larson Studio,
and, those exhibited in the windows of Tweten's Photography as well.
Both operations contribute significantly to the facade of downtown
Grafton. For the most part, the management and staff of Grafton's main
street establishment's can be proud of their projected demeanor.

A TRIBUTE TO COURAGE....
State Senator Elton W. Ringsak received the President's Trophy from
President Gerald Ford. It is one of the nation's highest honor, being
named "Handicapped American of the year." An Eagle Scout, high school
letterman and holding a BS degree in commercial law, are but a few of
Elton's lifetime accomplishments. He was wounded, by shrapnel, four
times in the North African campaign and returned to duty each time.
A artillery shell exploded over his head at Monte Cassino, tearing into
the left side of his brain causing total paralysis of his right side.
As a soldier, Elton has the distinction of being one of the most
decorated veterans to serve in World War ll. He received five purple
hearts, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, two Distinguished Service
Crosses, the French Croix de Guerre, the Italian Military Valor Cross,
the Presidential Citation, the White Legion of Honor, and four European
Theater Operations medals.
Lieutenant colonel Elton W. Ringsak a distinguished soldier, super
attorney and a darn fine statesman. He was, a "Hell-of-a-man", and,...
he'd been there,... and back. Our community, our state, and our country
are a much better place because of Elton W. Ringsak. I am pleased to
say, not only have I worked for Elton, he too, has worked for me. I am
pleased to have had the opportunity to share space in this world with
such a man, and, I'm proud having been able to call him my friend.
Elton was laid to rest at Washington's Arlington Cemetery. I was also
privileged to visit Eltons final resting place as well.

The Real Estate folks must have been really (pardon the pun)
busy the last few days. I've noticed several new SOLD signs all over
town.

I've heard tell of a restaurant that uses place mats with
this inscription:
"4,076 people died of gas last year.
"29 inhaled it. "47 put a match to it.
AND, the other 4,000, stepped on it.

Several window display's up and down Graftons main street are not
only pleasing to look at. They are starting to take on the appearance of
the rapidly approaching holiday season.
As one drives down "Main" from the south, Stitches Embroidered
Apparel, Golden Harvest Jewelry, Mary's Ladies Fashion and Town &
Country Flowers truely enhance the look of the 600 block.
Embroidery Plus, Dollar Sense, The Squire Shop and the Grafton Drug have
all worked vigorously to make their store front windows aesthetically
pleasing.
I think the buying public really appreciates the window displays
in those businesses with large, clear glass, store front showcases.

I just want to thank you for the wonderful saying you had about
your mother is always with you. It has been a month and half since my
mom passed away and it has been a tough road, especially now with her
house sold, it is a good thing and bad thing. The couple that are
purchasing it is a nice young couple. It just isn't home without Mom and
Dad there, but the memories in that house are priceless and will always

I received the following note from Senator Harvey Tallackson regarding
the Sheradon Condo idea. He wrote; >>> Gary, I was interested in your
comments on the housing complex Howard Johnson and I worked on for
Grafton. At that time we felt there was a real need for the condo type
apartment building with garages and meeting areas for the residents.
Howard and I drove to Rugby where a like project had been built and was
operating with all the condo's filled. (sold)
The proposed building would have been 3 stories, built in an octagon
shape with double garages. The proposal was for 12 condo's. We had
blueprints drawn up and got estimates to build the project.
Our financial agent suggested we needed to get buyers for 10 of the 12
condo's before starting to build the project. After exhausting all
avenues we ended up with 8 committed buyers but could not get anymore.
So after a lot of planning and efforts to sell 10 units, we finally
abandoned the project.
I still have the blueprints in my office gathering dust. It would have
been a real asset to Grafton. Later I worked hard to get the housing
units in the empty Developmental Center, North "A" and North "B".
Regards Harvey T. <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Harvey. I
doubt you would have a problem filling those 12 units today,.... at
$55,000 each,... including a double garage.

(Wednesday Nov. 15) at 7:00 pm at the Heritage Village in Grafton.
We hope the community and Grafton will come and stand behind us on
this project because I believe our town needs something like this for
our youth. Come to the meeting and voice your opinion on this
project. Let's all work together on this and it will work. Give our
youth a place of their own to "hang out" so to speak., with it being

A place for our youth to "hang out". Is a super idea! In my day we had
"The Hole". A four lane bowling alley with 4 pool tables and a couple
pin ball machines. All in the basement of the Basell Hotel and bar.
Later there was a larger bowling alley with even more pool tables and a
bar. In the 60's one was started and housed in the old Bridgemen
building on the north end of Hill Ave. I am not sure what lead up to its
closing. Perhaps others who were closer to its inner workings could
better report on what went well and not so well in that attempt. It
"might" be, that teens are far different than they were back in the
60's, but I think a commonality still exits for teens wanting to
socialize with other teens in an atmosphere where they feel accepted,
welcome and safe. A teen center was a good idea back then and it's a
good idea now, but the same challenges that existed back in the 60's as
far as keeping one running probably exist today also.
The Nickelodeon was another attempt to satisfy the thirst for youth to
congregate. Parking lots and local gas station / convenience stores are
also a favorite "gathering" place for our youth. Unfortunately, that
practice creates the perceived malady that youth, congregating in
numbers, creates a unmanageable circumstance. Which, in turn, requires
the powers that be to feel the need for the groups dissipation. Or so it
seems to me.

If, the Gazette were to have a mission statement. It would contain

Hello!
I wanted to express my thanks for your words of remembrance of my
mother, Ilze (Vitums) Sando in the "Shivercity Gazette." A friend
found it and printed it out for my wife and I. I wanted to pass
along some of Mom's own words as read to the congregation during her
funeral. "It was in Grafton, ND that we finally found the place that
would become 'home' to us. The first true home since leaving Latvia."
This was from a letter that Mom had written while at UND titled "My
first fourteen years in America." Mom had very fond memories of Grafton
and remained friends with many who still live there and Grafton-ites who
moved elsewhere. Her last trip to Grafton was in late August of 2006 to
visit relatives (on the Sando side). Incidentally, Mom (and Dad
eventually) will be interred at the Crescent Masonic Cemetary in
Grafton, close to my paternal grandparents, Norris and Roseann Sando.
Mom's parents; Dr. Arvids and Erika Vitums, are in the Grafton Lutheran
Cemetery. If you'd like, I can give you the date of the internment
service when we get it finalized. Again, My family and I appreciate your
noting Mom's passing so kindly. She will surely be missed.

share, if I may. I think it's most appropriate for you this day.

Your Mother lives inside your laughter. And she's crystallized in every

I was little more than a teenager when I lost my mother Paul. At first
I struggled and wondered why, even where, she had gone. I wondered if I
could handle her not being there, and for awhile, if anyone even cared.
Then on the day of her funeral. When I was feeling most alone, my dad
told me to "cheer up son, your mother still loves you, she just went on
home." He said she'd always be as close as I'd like, and never leave me
alone, in the darkness night. He promised her memory would always be
there and that she'd help God, when he answers my prayer.
I still miss my Mother, but my dad sure was right. Cause her memories
seem brightest, in the darkness of night.

share, if I may. I think it's most appropriate for you this day.

I was little more than a teenager when I lost my mother Paul. At first
I struggled and wondered why, even where, she had gone. I wondered if I
could handle her not being there, and for awhile, if anyone even cared.
Then on the day of her funeral. When I was feeling most alone, my dad
told me to "cheer up son, your mother still loves you, she just went on
home." He said she'd always be as close as I'd like, and never leave me
alone, in the darkness night. He promised her memory would always be
there and that she'd help God, when he answers my prayer.
I still miss my Mother, but my dad sure was right. Cause her memories
seem brightest, in the darkness of night.

indication it looks like we can expect to enjoy a pleasant drive thru
Grafton's Leistikow Park again this year.

To let people know of a fun night we have planned at B & D Flooring
and Carpet Cleaning. Next Thursday, 16th at 6:30pm at the store on the
corner of 5th and Griggs. We are offering a "FREE" faux painting class.
Our focus that night will be on "Kid's Rooms". We will be showing
chalkboard paint, glow in the dark paint, glitter paint, as well as
painting techniques. The last class focused on 3 general faux painting
techniques. The turn out was great! We had a lot of fun and the ladies
got to try it out before doing it at home. (Men are also welcome, it
just happened to be all ladies then). So, if your interested, stop in
and check it out. If you have any questions, you can call the store

discontinue selling groceries and will close all accounts at that time.
(Oops, did I forget to mention that was printed in the Walsh County

To often, we hear of those less fortunate than us, during the time
of their most serious and greatest challenges. I find It is very
gratifying to hear of the progress those individuals make along their
way to recovery. I am extremely pleased to share the following note from
Sandy Schrank with regards to her beautiful young Nessa Schrank. She
wrote:
Gary, just had to send a note on info of Nessa. She was home this
weekend for deer hunting. Saturday morning she got a 5x4 buck!!! One
excited girl!!!! The hunt from the vehicle tag is a great tool for
anyone with disabilities. And one shot had to count as reloading with
one hand isn't to fast. We are very proud of her drive to keep trying
all the things she loves to do. Some things go great others don't but
her grandpa has always said THERE'S NO SUCH WORD AS CAN'T, YOU HAVE TO
TRY!!! Just keeping you in the loop of the many people you help.
SANDY SCHRANK <<< Thank you so much for caring and sharing
Sandy. It would take a train a mile long to haul the all the prayers,
hope and well wishes folks directed to Nessa. Please give Nessa our best
regards, and, tell her there's another trainload on the way.

Almost every day, one or more, Gazettes are returned marked, "over
quota", "address unknown" or some such thing.
Sometimes I'm not really sure what to do. Normally I
continue sending the Gazette to that address for a week or so. If it
continues to come back, eventually I must assume it is no-longer a valid
address, or, in the case of those returned "over quota" I can only
assume the individual isn't opening the mail any longer.
Then of course there's another problem. Mine to be exact. For
instance, when I receive notes like the following. >>>
Hi Gary: I wrote to you a few weeks ago to tell you the
change in our email address. It doesn't look like it went through, as we
have not received any "Skeeterville Gazettes". We really enjoy getting
them and want to tell you again of the good job you are doing. We hope
that you get this email, so we can once again enjoy your gazette. All
is well in California and hope the same for North Dakota. Bye for
now. Judy (Gourde) Smith. <<< Now then,... First I
must apologize for my ignorance. I did receive Judy's note requesting
the change. I even made the change in my small, office quality, rolodex
index file. I can only attribute the fact that I didn't make the proper
address change in my computer to a brain flatulent of significant
proportions. However, I have made the correct address change now. I hope
the Gazette will once again reach the land of Disney.

Speaking of Disney, movies or plays. Chris Larson wants to remind
everyone about this weeks Far Off Broadway event.
Grafton High School Far Off Broadway presents "Hello, Dolly!" On
November 16th, 17th, and 18th. Performances will be at 7:30pm all
three nights. Tickets are available NOW by calling 352-0018! You can
also get your tickets at the door. Ticket prices are: $6 for adults and
$5 for students and senior citizens. The performances will be held at
Central Middle School, 725 Griggs Avenue. <<< Thanks a million for
caring and sharing Chris. Lets hope for a "packed house" all three
nights.

believe our town needs something like this for our youth. Come to the
meeting and voice your opinion on this project. Let's all work
together on this and it will work. Give our youth a place of their
own to "hang out", so to speak, with it being properly run. Hope to
see you there. Thanks again Gary for a great job. Marian <<<

has been a long standing, small town, problem. Providing the proper
place, with the proper guidance is much easier to draft than carry out.

We are saddened to report the passing of a long time friend. We
sometimes take our place on earth for granted. Often forgetting that
some have followed a more difficult path to freedom and security than
others. I found Ilze's obituary both humbling and meaningful. Especially
in light of such serious issues, facing so many, around the world today.
Our country became a better place the day the Vitums family arrived.
They brought with them hope, and, an understanding that the world can be
a better place. They will leave us with a legacy that we can only hope
to emulate. I encourage everyone, please, take a moment to read, and
appreciate a "peek" into the life and times of Ilze (Vitums) Sando and

~~~ Ilze Renee (Vitums) Sando, 63, Minot, and formerly of Grafton,
died Friday, November 3, 2006, in her home.
Ilze was born on January 6, 1943, to Dr. Arvid and Erika (Ketners)
Vitums in Sauka, Latvia. Because of the war and the spread of
communism, her family fled their homeland and traveled through various
countries eventually arriving at a Displaced Persons camp in Augsburg,
Germany. In 1949, Ilze and her family came to the United States and
started a new life in Wisconsin with the help of Lutheran World
Relief. Within three years the family moved to Grafton, North Dakota
where Ilze attended elementary and high school. In high school she
was very active, participating in cheerleading, band and nearly every
organization. She was selected high school homecoming queen her
senior year of 1961. Ilze attended the University of North Dakota
where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, a Sioux
cheerleader and met her future husband Robert.
She was united in marriage to Robert Norris Sando on June 5, 1965, at
Grafton Lutheran Church. Upon Robert's completion of his MS Degree
and her BS Degree at the UND, they moved to Minot where both were
employed at Minot State University. Ilze was employed at the MSU
Bookstore until 2005 when her illness made it impossible for her to
continue.
The Sandos were head residents of Pioneer Hall and Crane Hall on the
campus of MSU for five years before moving to their current home. Ilze
loved reading, listening to music, playing bridge and doing
needlecraft. Many of her needlecraft skills were learned from her
mother.
Ilze was able to return to here homeland along with her son and
daughter-in-law in 1995 to visit her family home and relatives. She
impressed everyone with her fluency in the Latvian language.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; son Paul (Jean) Sando of
Moorhead, MN; daughter, Susan (Boyd) Hemphill of Pflugerville, TX;
grandchildren Kristofer and Katie Sando, Isaac and Caleb Hemphill;
brother Martin (Mavis) Vitums of St. Louis Park, MN; sister Mara (Joe)
Listopad of Taylor, Wisconsin. Ilze was preceded in death by her parents
Dr. Arvid and Erika Vitums.
Memorial Service: Thursday, November 9, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. in First
Lutheran Church, Minot.
Visitation: No reviewal, but friends may sign a memorial register on
Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home
– Minot;

It's fun being able to share some of the things going on around the
area. This one comes from B & D Flooring. I happen to know them very
well.

Hi! Just wanted to let people know of a fun night we have planned at B
& D. Next Thursday, at 6:30pm, we are offering a "FREE" faux painting
class. Our focus that night will be on "Kid's Rooms". We will be showing
chalkboard paint, glow in the dark paint, glitter paint, as well as
painting techniques. We had a class tonight, (Thursday) although the
focus was on 3 general faux painting techniques. The turn out was great!
We had a lot of fun and the ladies got to try it out before doing it at
home. (Men are also welcome, it just happened to be all ladies tonight).
So, if anyone is interested, stop in and check it out. If you have any

Todays Gazette is being brought to you, in part, by the hard working

It looks like we can expect more normal weather for the rest of the
week. Normally that means no-one knows for sure what the weather will
be, the rest of the week.

The folks from GMU (Grafton Municipal Utilities) have been working on
cleaning the leaves, plastic bottles and discarded beer & pop cans out
of our communities catch basins and storm drains.
The giant truck mounted "vacuum cleaner" they use today, is a far cry
from a curved spade attached to a 12 foot handle. Using the spade was a
difficult process at best, so when we started we always made certain the
entire gutter was cleaned first. Then, with luck, and a early snowfall,
we wouldn't have to go back and clean them out all over again.
Nels Hanson was the one that taught me how to clean storm sewer drains.
As I remember it, Nels pulled up along side a drain with the old Ford
dump truck, leaned over toward me and said. "Now, you grab that long
handled spade from the back of the truck, take it over to the drain and
set it down. Then, take the pick that's laying by the long handle spade,
hook the storm grate with it, and pull it off. Then stick that long
handled spade down the hole and scrap out all that 'stuff' down there."
(I cleaned that up a bit for the kids and clergy)
From the seat of the old Ford truck, that sounded fairly simple.
However, it wasn't long after I dropped the spade in that catch basin
that I realized digging 'stuff' (cleaned up for the same reason) out of
storm drains with a bent spade is a lot like trying to tie your shoes
with mittens on. Before we finished the last drain that fall, I got
pretty handy with those long handled spades. I could, almost, take the
labels off the soup cans and separate the glass from the plastic all on
the way out of the hole. Or, so it seemed to me anyway.

Have you noticed now that the election is over, most of the "coulda,
woulda, shoulda" folks are back at full strength.

FOR SALE: A 1946 Jeep CJ. Call Les After 6 p.m. (I guess he's a late
sleeper) Should call soon,... the ad's been listed in the Walsh County
Record since 1986.

Proof positive that advertising does work. Less than one day after
writing about The Sheraton Condos I received the following note. >>>>
Gee, Gary....I got all excited reading the blurb on the condos.....while
reading........"maybe we should move to Grafton!!!"....then the
clincher!!! Did they sell any?
Kermit, the condo hunter <<< I can't be absolutely sure Kermit. I'm not
even sure if they're still taking applications or not. Harvey does drop
into Granny's once in awhile, maybe I can find out more about the
project from him then.

Does anyone remember saying? " I, being of sound mind and body
(usually), do hereby will to my sister, Holly, my bedroom window (for
unmentionable reasons) and the Honda to anyone that can handle it's
power."

I believe that is Todd Morgans famous last words in this weeks Who's to
Say column. He suggests that "for the sake of fair play" "the powers
that be" should do the "gracious and polite thing" and request a recount
REGARDLESS of whether it's required by law or not. Todd finished his
"eloquent political dance" with, "It's the right thing to do.
What's that all about? Stopping at a stop sign in the middle of the
desert, is "the right thing to do? Why? Because "it's the law". If the
law says, there should be a recount, then without question, there should
be a recount. Why? Because it's the law. If, on the other hand, the law
"says" or, more precisely in this case, doesn't say it should be. Why
would one twist words to be anything other than what it is.
If in fact, if there are merchants on main street that are ADAMANTLY
opposed to the increase. Maybe "the powers that be" need to spend a bit
more time discussing the future of "our" community with those
individuals.
Whether a horse wins by a nose, a neck or his whole dad burn body, he
still wins the race. Or so it seems to me.

Today, on the eve of political silence, we should all revisit our
priorities and be prepared to cast a vote for the future of our
community. VOTE YES for #230
AND, if someone would be willing to pay travel expenses, plus food &

off this years ballets, for their election.

Service Commissioner. I have served on a local telephone board and have
worked with Tony Clark on matters that were important to our area and
state. Tony was very helpful in getting the facts, speaking up for the
people of North Dakota and getting the matter resolved. Tony is a loyal
spokesperson for North Dakota and North Dakota would be missing a
great Public Service Commissioner. North Dakota is a leader in
broadband network and this would not happen without his and our US
Senate and Representaive in Congress help.

I received the following THANK YOU note from Jacqui and A.K. last
Friday, unfortunately, it was after Fridays Gazette went "in the mail".
Although orchestrating a benefit requires the efforts of many and the
support of even more. Finding the words, in the right order, without
forgetting someone is extremely difficult at best.
Or so it seems to me anyway.

It has been a few days since Jillian's benefit and cards and
contributions are still coming in. Even so, we thought we should take
a minute, and say THANK YOU, to every one that helped with the benefit

would be so long and even then we feared we would forget some.
So for now, we would like to say THANK YOU EVERYONE. You know who you

Speaking of wonderful things, from wonderful people. I must share a
very heartwarming event in my life this past Sunday.
I just sat down in the living room when the phone rang. As I answered
it, a soft, somewhat nervous, sounding voice on the other end asked, "Is
this Mr. Moe?" I responded yes and the soft voice, now more softly, and,
even more nervous, said. "Mr. Moe, I am so happy,... you make me so
proud," and then the phone line went silent for a moment, it was evident
to me that the lady was struggling to gain her composure. When I asked,
who was calling, she said that she was Ricardo's wife, then she told me
how happy she was that Mr. Wally DeSautel had sent her the Gazette that
contained Ricardo's obituary and the words I had written about him.
She mentioned that she hoped "the Kids" had sent a thank you note for
writing such kind words. I told her they certainly did, and, I said,
that I have it posted on the bulletin board above my desk.
She related that until reading that Gazette, she wasn't aware of how
well liked Ricardo really was. (I might add that is also true of his
entire family) She told me that it is getting, a little, easier for her
now, although, she misses him greatly and, she said, that she still
reads that Gazette often, she also said that she will treasure it
forever.
If anyone ever wondered, why,.... why I "piddle" with the "babble" I
call the Gazette. Delia, and the entire Ricardo "Dick" Escobar family is
certainly reason enough for me,... for a lifetime.
Gosh I'm proud of the community I live in and, I am proud of all the
folks I can call my friend. Gary

Although orchestrating a benefit requires the efforts of many and the
support of even more. Finding the words, in the right order, without

With Warm temperature and yesterdays rain has all but eliminated any
signs of snow in the area. As a matter of fact, there's more white in my

Well,.. It's all over,.. the election that is,.. all over but the
recounting that is, and, I'll bet I'm not the only one really happy
about that. As usual, some are pleased with the election results, then
again, some can't understand why their "preference" didn't make it. And,
if things go as normal, those that didn't even vote at all, will be
running around telling everyone they told them so. Or, so it seems to
me.
For now let it suffice to say. "I truely hope the winners actually
accomplish everything they promised,.... and, that the losers learn from
the winners of that process.

I was pleased the city sales tax increase was approved, at least I
think it was. I will be looking for signs benefit from that increase
over the course of the coming year. It should be fair, and reasonable,
to expect the folks in charge of those dollars will keep "us" informed
on the benefits we gain from the increase. As a matter of fact, maybe a
regular, state of the city, report wouldn't be a bad idea anyway.

The biggest news of this week is the 2006 Unity Medical Center
Foundation Harvest Auction. November 4, 2006 at MarketPlace on 8th in
Grafton.

The biggest news next week is that it's election Tuesday. That's the
day everyone that can, should vote. That is also the day we might
literally hold the future of Unity Medical Center and "our" community"
in the same hand we blacken out the little ovals with. I am going to
vote YES. That means I am in favor of ordinance #230.
The additional cost of #230 to me, and I expect most folks, could well
be a fraction of the cost of an ambulance ride to a big city to the
south. If, the additional income helps increase our population, and I
believe it very well could, that too would generate significant savings
to me.
To vote no on such an important issue is almost like wishing for our
communities demise. Or so it seems to me.

Speaking of voting, elections and demise. I must make a serious
correction to Thursdays Gazette. A note I included in yesterdays Gazette
gave me, and, I suspect others, that read it the false impression that
Carol Brekke Lessard would be willing to accept a write-in vote for the
position of Walsh County States Attorney.
For the benefit of those that may not have received or seen that
Gazette. The following note allowed me to believe there was value to the
"rumor". >>>
Subject: states attorney position
Dear Gary,
I thought you might like to know, that Carol Brekke Lessard is,
according to what I've heard, agreeable to a write-in candidacy for
the states attorney position. I have not spoken directly with Carol, but
have it on good authority she is willing.
Luther Meberg <<< Unfortunately I now have it on even better
authority, nothing could be further from the trueth. Carol called me
yesterday afternoon and assured me that in absolutely no way shape or
form did she agree or even entertain the idea of running against Barbara
Whelan. As a matter of fact, Carol indicated to me that she honestly
believes Barbara Whelan is, in fact, a perfect choice for "our" new
Walsh County States Attorney.
I assured Carol I would correct yesterdays error and I also told her in
no-uncertain terms that Barbara Whelan was my choice for Walsh County
States Attorney as well. I am thankful Carol brought the blunder to my
attention.
I have always maintained that the Gazette is nothing more than an
exchange of ideas, musings and opinions, designed to generate thought
between consenting Gazette participants.
Although, for the most part, I strive to add jest to sometimes serious
topics. Never would I intentionally do harm to anyone. Unfortunately, I
read more into the note than I should have. Probably, to a certain
extent, because I wanted to believe it myself. Obviously, I wasn't the
only one.

Lyle and Janyce were my very fine neighbors for several months on
Prospect Ave. I moved to Minot, ND in 1966. In 1988 I moved to
Mesa, AZ. Janyce started to come to Mesa in the winter and we usually
get together every winter and of course I am looking forward to her
return again soon. Thanks again Gary for your fine interesting
reports.

Verna. I often have coffee at Granny's with Ray Charlton, another former
Grafton National/Norwest Bank staff member. Once in a while he even

environment. Barb Whelan when she represented St.Thomas township during
a land purchase I was involved with. And, I had the opportunity to
observe Carols farming and sugar beet growing abilities when I was
Agricultural Manager at the Drayton Factory.
From those limited observations, I can tell you that I would consider
both individuals performance as exceptionally good.

run down 5th street in Grafton. Jack DeSautel and Gordy Groven used to
use the stretch between Lykkens and the State Developmental Center (then
known as the States School) as a race track. Someone mentioned that must

could possibly argue with that logic?

It has been three weeks since my mom Mildred Molde has passed away,
and I just wanted to tell you that she very much enjoyed
your newsletters. I would always print them off for her to
read. She was in the hospital for the whole month of September and I
still printed off your newsletters and kept them for her to hopefully
read, she didn't get to do that. She always wanted to write you a
note for all the nice things you have mentioned about her and my dad.
But she was somewhat of a perfectionist and could never get the right
words on paper. I remember her telling me that she babysat some of
your children and one would just cry when you or Pat dropped them
off. I think that same child (grown adult now well physically anyways
Ha Ha ) is the same one, along with his wife, that really helped me out
by watching my youngest son so I could go down and be with my mom while
she was in the hospital as my husband was busy with beet harvest.
Keep up the great work and I enjoy reading them also.

Funny how things go. For the past few days I've noticed a nice shinny
car around town with a license plate that reads Rev Lee. I'm not sure
why, but it reminded me of an old neighbor down the street who's name
was Rodney Hell. Then I thought it's a good thing Rod wasn't a reverend.
Anyway, today, I am very pleased to welcome Rev Lee to the Gazette
family, and, I have no idea where the Hell's are now.

Marie Byzewski, 98, of Grafton, ND. died, Monday, October 30, 2006 at
Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, November 4, 2006 at
St. John's Catholic Church in Grafton with burial in St. John's
Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Barnes Family Funeral Service,
Henriksen-Kamrowski Chapel on Friday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a
6:00 pm Prayer Service and one hour prior to services in the church.
Marie J. Gourde was born July 23, 1908 at Cashel, ND. the daughter of
Joseph T. and Alphonsina (Campbell) Gourde. She was reared and educated
there and graduated from St. Aloysius Academy in Oakwood in 1927. She
graduated from the State Teachers College in Valley City, ND. and later
took summer courses at the University of ND., Bismarck and Mayville
Colleges. On January 12, 1938 she was united in marriage to Frank
Byzewski in Oakwood, ND.. They made their home in Oakwood and on a farm
near Warsaw before settling in Grafton in 1945. She worked at the Basell
Hotel, Kimbal's Turkey Plant. Marie then taught for 18 years in Various
Walsh County County and the last 6 years at Chase School in Grafton. Mr.
Byzewski died in 1992. She volunteered at the Lutheran Sunset Home for
many years for chapel services. She was a member of St. John's Catholic
Church, St. John's Altar Society, taught Religious Education, Night
Adorer of Sacred Heart, Lay Associates of the Priesthood, Catholic
Daughters of America, Our Ladies Rosary Makers, and the Retired Teachers
Association.
Survivors include her son: Jeffrey Byzewski of Grand Forks, ND;
grandchilren: Mike Byzewski of Chicago, Ill., Tad Byzewski of Grafton,
North Dakota, Jay Byzewski of Grand Forks, ND. and Angela Byzewski of
Grand Forks, ND.; great granddaughter: Molly Byzewski of Grand Forks,
ND.; and sister: Agnes Bolek of Grafton, ND.. She was preceded in death
by her parents, husband, Frank, son, James; eight brothers and one
sister.

So far I haven't heard from anyone, truly concerned about the future
of Grafton, that's against the proposed city sales tax ordinance # 230.
Next Tuesday's election will be a very important one for "our" hospital
and the community in general.

Last night was the night for ghosts and goblins,.... little kids, big
kids and limousines....... Limousines??? Until last night there was
always, at least, some question in my mind whether or not some of the
little "monsters" that knocked on our door could even afford the bag
full of candy they would end the night with.
For the most part, I guess, that's still true. Except, of course, for
those that stopped by last night in a long white limousine. It's a far
cry from the days when we would walk across town to the city hall and
"bob" for apples on halloween night. One can only imagine that anyone
that can afford to haul his kids around "trick or treating" in a
limousine. Should be able to afford to by his kids all the candy they
want. Then again, I guess after they pay for the limo, they might need a
hand out. Or so it seems to me.

Tuesday I will be voting YES. I am IN FAVOR of ordinance # 230. The way
I see it, those that don't believe they should vote yes, really don't
care about the future of "our" community. They may even have "drafted" a
smoke screen to cover their ultimate greed. However, the real fact is,
without a hospital, everyones risk of demise increases significantly.
Without population growth, everyones likelihood in our little community
is jeopardized. The lack of a positive attitude can only translate into
a negative one. That is why I feel I must vote yes on ordinance # 230.
And, I hope everyone does.

"Different Type of Prayer" in yesterdays Gazette. I do plan on using it

mother of Henry Valentine (Valley) Mott Jr (long the city engineer of
Grafton, along with his dog Norsk) and also the woman who partially
built what we called the "haunted house", prior to her husband's death,
at the present site of Sunset Home. Mott hall at UND is also part of her
legacy. My Mom used to say she taught Cora Lykken everything she knew
about teaching school ! <<< Thanks a million Paul. Then it might be a
fair assumption on my part, to believe it was Mrs. Mott, that taught
Cora Lykken how to wash ones mouth out with soap,... assuming one tended
to use a bit of foul language in the school playground. (Not that that
would ever happen to me, mind you)

The Unity Medical Center Foundation is knee deep in preparation of
the Harvest Auction fundraiser. The auction has been scheduled for
Saturday November 4, to be held at Marketplace on 8th. Last years event
produced over 130 items for auction, raised over $15,000 and was a grand
time as anyone who was there would tell you. We hope we can again supply
the place and time for many to come and enjoy themselves this year. We
are currently in the process of collecting items to offer up for
auction. If there is anyone interested in donating, we would gladly
accept new or slightly used items, specialty services, worthy antiques,
theme baskets, etc., or for a $50 cash donation you could sponsor one of
our many delicious hors d' oeuvres. We'll even rename them with a catchy
title to represent you. Tickets to attend the event are available now.
$100 CA$H Giveaway tickets include two entries to the event with a
chance to win cash throughout the evening or a single entry ticket for
