Folks have been in the former Heritage Sales and Leasing facility
the last few days cleaning out the sailboat fuel. Rumor has it, it will
become a automobile repair business. At this point, I don't have all of
the specifics of the new business, although I expect our local Chamber
of Commerce and our cities civic leaders will be checking it out to
determine how they can help the new venture get off to a flying start.

Speaking of the Chamber, either the Silverados have decided to
reschedule there Grafton performance, or, the billboard by the Chamber
office is outdated.

I mentioned the importance of our areas Volunteers. Their service
to our community, in my opinion, is far to often overlooked. As a matter
of fact, on a few occasions I have even heard some suggest that it is a
volunteers "responsibility", to give of their free time, for the benefit
of others. I would suggest, "They that speak so stupid, should be devoid
of volunteer services."
Anyway, I am pleased to share the following note from an avid
"Volunteer" member of the St.Thomas fire and rescue squad. Tom wrote.
Gary,
I am pleased to here the nice comments that were said about our Quick
response unit in St. Thomas. The St. Thomas Fire Department handles
these calls, Everyone that is on the STFD is trained as a First
Responder or EMT. Our community is without an Ambulance service and,
have always, for as long I can remember, ran Quick response calls. We
are your one stop shop! We respond to Fire, Medical. Hazmat, and auto
extrication emergencies. Thanks again for the kind words, Tom Kennelly
STFD
ps. We are not paid on call, we are all volunteers, and hearing comments
such as you have said, and knowing people appreciate all that we do is
better than any paycheck that could be had! <<< Thank you Tom, for
CARING and SHARING, and, thanks too, to all of "our" volunteers, here,
across the country and around the world.

The deer running thru town gave Lloyd reason to share the
following.
Dear Gary:
Although Flagstaff, AZ is not a small town it is not a large city
either. About 50,000 live here. Yet we not only have dear in our back
yards on a regular basis but Elk, as well. Not so many years ago all of
our children and grandchildren were visiting us for Christmas. On
Christmas morning three Elk showed up in our back yard. All of the
grandchildren 'knew', of course, that they were Santa's reindeer. And so
they were. Within minutes of their being noticed, a large bag of
grandchildren type presents was found on our doorstep. But we never did
see Santa.
PS. One of the 'reindeer' had part of a cloths line hooked on his
antlers, complete with a red dress and some undies.

I think Filbert and Jack Collette were younger brothers of Ray
Collette. Filbert (can't remember his real name) was my age (81) and
Jack was a little older then me. Jack was killed while in the army
during WWII.. Jack was a friendly good natured boy. Filbert was tough as
nails and never smiled. When the new school was being built we
went to 4th grade in the library. We were playing touch football in the
yard. I tackled Filbert by both ankles. He flew up in the air and was
knocked out of wind because he fell on his chest. I thought he would
whip me after he came to, but he didn't say a word. A tough little guy.
I wonder what ever happened to him.

The Tollack 'saga' continues. Larry wrote.
Hi Gary ..... I haven't checked my email lately and just noticed
all the commotion about Tollacks hardware and furniture store. Bill
Tollack and Ben Sell originally opened the business, Tollack eventually
bought out Sell. My dad (Ray Collette) went to work for Tollack in the
mid forty's. Around 1949 he partnered with George Harris, who was
Tollack's nephew, and purchased the business. Two or three years later
my dad bought out George Harris and ran the business until the late
1960s. I worked at the store during most of my high school years.
I really enjoy reading the Gazette, see you this summer. Larry
Collette <<< Thanks for caring and sharing Larry. Besides Glenn's
questions on your uncles, the one about the giant wolf in Tollacks
window remains unanswered as well.

It's always wonderful hearing from folks in the 'sunny south'.

Gazette. We like where we live down here because it has a small town
feel. Art is busy getting the knee replacement into golfing shape. We
have lots of relatives and friends here, and lots of activities in the

coffee guys at Granny's. Hope you have a wonderful "Jesus is the reason

numbers at about the same rate as the thermometer. You can rest assured,
however, that we never forget about "our" snowbird friends. As a matter
of fact, just last week Art lost the 'shake' for coffee, and, I think he

Evidently the drilling process at Grafton Square wasn't as successful
as some had hoped for. I didn't hear how deep they actually drilled,
although it couldn't have been to deep as they were only on site a short
time. Maybe those Sand Ranchers aren't so crazy after all.

Ever wonder what gives the White House News goons the right to delve
into the First Ladies personal health issues? Ever wonder to what end
(pardon the pun) they would go to "spotlight" the First Ladies problem
area? Have you ever really wondered, what seperates the term news from
nosy?
As a matter of fact, I have, just last night. I was in the Gazette
library researching the demize of a fantastic meatball and mashed potato
dinner. I asked myself, - it wouldn't be right to ask anyone else to
enter the library,.. when I'm researching, - what really does constitute
news? Then, shortly after the passing of a slight to moderate "cramp",
the answer popped (pardon the pun, again) right out at me. So, I
have determined news is,
"That, which is happening, or going to happen, should be called news.
That which has already happened, will be recorded as history." Then, I
asked myself another question. What percent of the average paper is
news, and how much of it would be history? Unfortunately, I finished my
research project before I could answer my question. I did however, have
time to wonder. How many newspapers ask themselves that question before
their "newspapers" go to print.

As often as I can I like to recognize, and mention the often heroic,
always important, efforts of the many volunteers throughout our area.
Our daughter Kelly and her husband David were able to witness first
hand, how very important our areas fantastic volunteers actually are.

Hi Dad. David and I had a situation happen on Saturday evening that
was quite scary. While we were waiting for our meal at Rookies Bar
and Grill in St. Thomas, a man who was just about to enjoy his Prime Rib
dropped his head to the table with what turned out to be a heart
attack. They, the people at Rookies, called 911 and did what they
could to be sure the man wasn't choking, but I can't say enough for how
fast the quick response team made it to the scene. St. Thomas is very
fortunate to have these two guys that got to the scene as fast as they
did on Saturday night. Kelly <<< Thanks a million for caring and
sharing Kelly. Almost every small town has what is called "first
responders". Often they are the closest, and consequently, able to
respond first, offering their life saving techniques until an ambulance
and more sufisticated medical attention arrives.
In this case, the St.Thomas community can be proud of the group they
call "first responders". They are a very dedicated group adding
longevity to their commnity.

The ongoing saga of the former Tollacks Furniture Store continues. This
time Margie wrote. >>> Subject: Tollacks
I was reminded, when I read about my sister-in-law Maryann mentioning
a piece of furniture from the Tollacks store ---- I was at a local
garage sale about four or five years ago and I spotted a miniature
wooden Lane cedar chest ---- when I opened it up I noticed it was from
the Tollack Furniture Store. What someone cherished for many years is
now my "treasure". How good is that? "A Merry Christmas to All"
Margie Kennedy <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing
Margie. Richard, a gentleman I have morning coffee with at Granny's
tells me he has an ash tray from Tollacks Furniture Store. Richard
Thompson has also "borrowed" me a copy of The Grafton News and Times,
3rd annual Potato Edition. Circa March 1940. An Advertisement on page 54
says Grafton's Heaquarters for Fine Furniture and Hardware can be
obtained from Tollack Hardware and Furniture Company.

Well,.. it's finally happened. The Sand Ranchers have pushed the folks
at Grafton Square to the breaking point. At least that's what it looks
like when you drive by. This morning there is a large "well drilling"
truck out front of the Grafton Square, drilling like they know there's
something down there. I can't imagine what they'll charge for gas, if
they actually find it down there. I suspect it will be something less
than the $2.24 they get for it now.
On the other hand,.. maybe they're just looking for a new supply of
sailboat fuel.

I don't suppose a deer running around the country is news,... in a big
town, but It sure is here. Here's the deer story, as I know it today. It
was first spotted in Elaine and Richard Thompsons back yard. Richard
took a picture if it laying under one of their evergreen trees. (So I
guess, in case of future litigation. The doe, - pardon the pun - belongs
to Richard.) Anyway, the next thing I know, I received the following
note from Rose Wendelbo. She wrote. >>> I heard a rumor about a deer
going thru the window at Tollefsons Funeral Home. I guess he (the
deer) wanted a going out parade. <<<
Then a few hours later. I received the following note. Giving the
whole ordeal even more credibility. Wally wrote. >>>
O.K. big boy. And now the rest of the deer story.
The deer ran west down 12th street and THROUGH the east door of
Tollefsons Funeral Home. Not for a visit,..... but a rest. Call Mike
Such for details. Wally <<< Okay, along with the phone call from our
son Jeff, telling us he observed the critter heading west, AND, our
mayor telling me he too seen the same thing. That,... is almost all the
information I need to believe the story actually does have a bit of
credibility to it. Then, the clincher. The final nail in the coffin, so
to speak. (once again, please pardon the pun)
I received the following note from Beverly, who, as it turns out, is
actually gainfully employed in the area compound we refer to as the
county court house and Walsh County Law Enforcement Center. She wrote.
>>> Hi Gary,
The deer that was seen running down main street was probably the same
deer that ran out the door after she had broken through a window at
Tollefson's Funeral Home. Apparently, Bambi or "Jane Doe" was there to
visit a loved one "lost" during the recent hunting season. If I hadn't
seen the pictures at the Law Enforcement Center on Monday, I never would
have believed it. When the deer crashed through the window, she cut her
nose and, yes, she is now a red-nosed reindeer.
Bev <<< And there you have it. Everything thing I know about the
sighting of the ruminant creature later identified as a deer named Jane
Doe.

Speaking of sightings, Denise Sevigny sent this reminder worth
following up on. She wrote. >>> Gary:
If you drive by the house immediately east of Our' Saviour's parking
lot, you might see an interesting person in the "front" window. Also, if
you drive down 5th street, on the corner of 5th and McHugh, you will see
a nativity scene made completely out of snow.

I wonder if you or anyone else remembers the stuffed Timber Wolf that
was on display in the window of Tollacks around 1950. It was gigantic. I
never knew that it was possible to find a wolf of that size. Maybe
it is still owned by someone around Grafton. I hope someone remembers it
and possibly knows how big it was or anything about the history of it.

It's always wonderful sharing wonderful things about small towns. Such
is the case with this note from Denise Moe.
She wrote. >>> Gary, Just thought I would share a story about shopping
in a small town. Today, I went to Pamida to purchase something that was
on sale Friday. (I had purchased two on Friday). I needed a third one
because we have 3 kids and only had purchased 2, which did not go over
well. Anyway, the gal at the counter remembered that I was in and
purchased 2 (scooters) and she knew who I was because we had just
finished some flooring work at the store. She OFFERED me the sale price.
She wished me a Merry Christmas - three times- and supplied service with
a smile. This is one of the reasons that I enjoy shopping in town so
much! Did you know that our local Pamida also "price matches" as do many
other businesses in town (ours included)? Why would someone want to
travel when the same or better service is available right here? Just
thought I would share my experience because this time of year, many
people are looking at the ads in the GF Herald to see what items are on
sale in GF or Fargo. Why not try here first? Or bring the ad in.... if
they don't have it, maybe they can get it. Merry Christmas! Shop
locally! <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Denise. Many folks
make an effort to shop locally. Unfortunately,... many do not. Which, is
the reason I have always subscribed to the following quote.
"The cost of living in a small town is in direct proportion to the
amount of spending it's residents "invest" in it."

Have I mentioned it won't be long before the 2007 Grafton Area
Volunteer Firefighters will be holding their $11,520 (in cash) annual
Calendar draw? If not, I will be really soon. I wonder if I mentioned
that the tickets are only $20 each, AND, if you purchase 5 tickets all
at one time, you can get them for only $100 AND then S&H is absolutely
free. Did I mention I still have a pile of tickets for that event? Gosh
I certainly hope so.

It hardly seems like yesterday, although in reality, more than
536,500,906 have ticked off my Timex. It hardly seems 6,209 days ago
today, that Phil Collins was wailing out his hit tune "Another Day in
Paradise" while our granddaughter, Krystal Brittney Moe, was wailing
from her very first spanking.
Fortunately, after 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild, we have
come to realize that time, in fact is relative. And, we love every
single one of them.

Have I mentioned it won't be long before the 2007 Grafton Area
Volunteer Firefighters will be holding their $11,520 (in cash) annual
Calendar draw? If not, I will be really soon. I wonder if I mentioned
that the tickets are only $20 each, AND, if you purchase 5 tickets all
at one time, you can get them for only $100 AND then S&H is absolutely
free. Did I mention I still have a pile of tickets for that event? Gosh
I certainly hope so.

It hardly seems like yesterday, although in reality, more than
536,500,906 have ticked off my Timex. It hardly seems 6,209 days ago
today, that Phil Collins was wailing out his hit tune "Another Day in
Paradise" while our granddaughter, Krystal Brittney Moe, was wailing
from her very first spanking.
Fortunately, after 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild, we have
come to realize that time, in fact is relative. And, we love every
single one of them.

We're still receiving information on the former Tollacks furniture and
hardware store. I received a call from Norman Russum the other day, he's
down enjoying the warm Arizona sunshine. He reported everything down
south is going well, and, he said, the supply of chocolate chip cookies
is as a good as ever. He also reminded me that Bill Tollack and Ben
Sell, at one time, were partners in the furniture/hardware business.
We also received the following insight from Maryann. She wrote. >>>
Tollacks ran a furniture store and Ray Collette was an employee - He
bought out Tollacks and ran a furniture store there for a number of
years - his wife was my husbands aunt and I know they owned the store in
the early 50's - cause in 1954 they presented our first child with
furniture from the store (she was their godchild) - they have 3 sons
still living = one in Mpls and the other 2 I believe live in CA-Larry,
Bob and Billy Collette-they probably can provide more history-know they
come to Grafton frequently for the annual summerfest-but someone may

It happened just his morning, on the corner of Hill Avenue and Hiway
17. According to reports from two reliable sources, one was our son,
the other the mayor, a deer was seen at the aforementioned intersection
this morning. No,... it wasn't a John Deere, the wheeled kind. It was
the four legged kind. The ones that start life with neat little white
spots on them.
The one this morning was just past the spot stage,.... if I understood
the call correctly. Evidently, about the same time as a North Dakota
State Hiway Patrolman was giving a local resident a reason to "invest"
in our state hiway system on the south side of that intersection. Bambi
(not Lewie) was buzzing thru a red light heading for the Westside Drive
inn. Maybe he was on the way to the sugarbeet storage pile west of
Grafton.

numerous pallets of stainless steel equipment resembling something that

Record,... on Thursday.
Anyway, for those of us that were wondering if the former Ekatta's
building was empty. By the looks of the stuff they're trying to stuff in
that building today. It won't be empty for long.

===== THEY'RE AT IT AGAIN =====
The intersection of Main & 7th street has certainly enjoyed it's share
of evolution. As I remember it anyway.
The Armory - the very first place I remember seeing Pat - on the
Northeast corner has evolved into Darcie Einarson's Law Offices. The
old Woodmen Hall on the south east corner has given way to Generations
Bar & grill. The south west corner, however, hasn't enjoyed quite such
a flamboyant evolution. Starting out as residential housing then
converted to Service stations with proprietors the likes of Harold
Campbell and Keith Mohagen has evolved into a parking lot for the
Norwest Banking organization.
The northwest corner of that intersection continues it's never ending
process of evolution. As I remember, it started out as the Tea Pot Dome
gasoline station. Like many Gas Stations, the "Dome" probably enjoyed
more proprietors and employees than Carters had liver pills. Eventually
however, the "Dome" disappeared evolving into a financial institution.
The latest being that of Choice Financial.
Almost since the first day "Choice" came to town, they have continued
an aggressive evolution program. First by "nudging" the former Gambles
building into the history books to provide additional parking space for
Choice, and, the way it looks, the rest of that entire block. Then they
added additional office facilities unto the original nucleus. For the
past several weeks the "original" portion of the bank has not only had
it's roof raised and redone, it appears as though they are updating the
entire insides again, as well.
Who said Grafton isn't a progressive little community? I didn't, and by
the looks of the corner of 7th street and Main Avenue. Those folks
didn't either.

== TIS the SEASON to be JOLLY ==
Thursday afternoon Pat and I attended the Century Elementary Holiday
Program.
Our Grandson Jacob was one of the stars of the show. As was the rest of
the students in grades 1 thru 4. It's always a little dangerous to
mention individuals amongst such a large group. Then again, nothing
ventured, nothing gained. Right? Anyway, I was able to bring home the
memory of Gabbi Gaustad doing a super performance of a "rapper" in
Santa's Comin' Down The Chimney. And, of course a "Holiday Program"
wouldn't be, without Santa Claus. This year Gonzalo Jimenez's portrayal
of Santa Claus couldn't have been more entertaining.
The entire school system should be commended for the fantastic job
they do nurturing our children into adulthood. And, we can be especially
pleased and proud of the work and effort Beverly Boura contributes to
that cause.
As we returned home I felt a subtle tranquillity that I could only
attribute to the super performance of our youngsters on that day. I even
thought how great it was, and, how woderful it made my day.
Then, later on that evening, as I was sitting in my chair. Several
vehicles stop out front and a whole bunch of youngsters piled out. (25
to be exact) For a second I wondered, what in the world are they doing
here. They walked toward our front door frolicking on the snow.
When we opened the door to greet them they politely said hello.
Then,... as Emily said "we're ready", it seemed like heaven opened up
it's doors, and the angels started singing,... standing right there, at
our door. As I stood there next to the most important person in my life,
I could almost see our loved ones, those that had passed on before me.
I tried hard to keep from blubbering as those youngsters sang to me.
The task seemed even harder in the shadow of our Christmas tree.
Twenty five wonderfully jubilant young members of the Mennonite
community visited our house last night. Giving absolute truth to the
phrase "Tis season to be Jolly", and,... for presents under the tree.
Somehow, it seems, those angels voices meant much more to Pat and me.
As they sang we knew the most important reason, for this season, is the
things God gives to you and me.
I believe we have all been put here on earth for a reason, and,... I
believe the reason is this season.
Or, so it seems to me.

The neat little community tucked in around hiway 81, a mere ten minute
drive north of Grand Forks, started it's life named Kimball. However, to
eliminate duplication, it's name was changed to Clair, and, ultimately,
in 1882, it became Ardoch by way of the suggestion of John Stevenson.
That same year, the Ardoch Monitor, a weekly paper was started, and
later it's name too was changed, to the Standard. It would seem as
though names were a hard thing to hold on to in the early days of
Ardoch.
Mrs. Alice Heffern Cayley was reared, (born and raised) in Ardoch.

street Tollacks Furniture Store building. I did receive this one. >>>
Roger Davis had his TV repair shop in the Tollack building. There was
also another family who had a furniture store there (back in the 60s I
think.) They moved here and then moved on.

Some may find it hard to believe, certainly I do. However, out there
somewhere is one of the worlds lowest forms of life. --- Several days
ago, when someone, or more, stole Goofy (3 of them) from the magnificent
display in Leistikow Park. I thought that might be the lowest feat, so
far this festive season anyway. Eventually though, Goofy (one of them)
was found and returned to his rightful place in the park display. And,
for a few days, I thought life and living in our small town in the
valley was good.
Then, I understand some scoundrel had the audacity to chop the top off
of one of Tim DeSautels brand spankin, newly planted, evergreen trees.
Yup, right in his very own back yard, they did.
Somehow I struggle with the thought of a person sitting around a stolen
Christmas tree, singing Christmas Carols and wishing loved ones "Merry
Christmas." I understand there is a bounty on the scoundrels head, if
he is taken in alive. If he's not,... oh well. Merry Christmas to
everyone,... except that bum.

The other day I made mention of Diabetes. I happen to be a diabetic, in
good standing, I might add. If I behave myself, I can do pretty well. If
not, a meter reading above 200 plus makes me very humble, very fast.
Anyway, my comment containing sugar stems from the fact that for more
than 36 years I worked (tho some might argue differently) in the sugar
business. At any rate, I received the following comments to that

Drugs such as steroids, Dilantin, and others may elevate the blood sugar

pancreas and can cause diabetes. Certain syndromes (for example,
Prader-Willi, Down's, Progeria, and Turner's) may result in a

When I lived in South Dakota, I worked with many special needs children
who suffered with Diabetes simply because of their syndrome.
I just thought these additional facts on diabetes should be notated.

tomorrow I sure wouldn't be here doing what I'm doing today, but I can't
realistically stay home and do the things I'd do if I knew I was going
to die tomorrow either. What if I didn't? And I'm not making light of
the situation either so don't think that, but it is a dilemma. How do
you balance it all? Family, friends, work, responsibilities, and the
list goes on and on. About the only thing we can do is realize how lucky
we are to be alive today and make the most of it. Work on our dash, like
you say.
And I'll say again today like I did when I first sent you that note, I'm
DAMN PROUD (I don't think I said "darn" the first note either HA!) of
you for realizing it before it was too late. And also DAMN PROUD to
count you as a friend. <<< There just isn't any better folks than sugar
tramps. I am blessed to have worked with the best of the best. If they
were a chorus, Lee would certainly qualify as their maestro. And, I am
proud to be able to call him my friend as well.

ago, when someone, or more, stole Goofy (3 of them) from the magnificent
display in Leistikow Park. I thought that might be the lowest feat, so
far this festive season anyway. Eventually though, Goofy (one of them)
was found and returned to his rightful place in the park display. And,
for a few days, I thought life and living in our small town in the
valley was good.
Then, I understand some scoundrel had the audacity to chop the top off
of one of Tim DeSautels brand spankin, newly planted, evergreen trees.
Yup, right in his very own back yard, they did.
Somehow I struggle with the thought of a person sitting around a stolen
Christmas tree, singing Christmas Carols and wishing loved ones "Merry
Christmas." I understand there is a bounty on the scoundrels head, if
he is taken in alive. If he's not,... oh well. Merry Christmas to
everyone,... except that bum.

The other day I made mention of Diabetes. I happen to be a diabetic, in
good standing, I might add. If I behave myself, I can do pretty well. If
not, a meter reading above 200 plus makes me very humble, very fast.
Anyway, my comment containing sugar stems from the fact that for more
than 36 years I worked (tho some might argue differently) in the sugar
business. At any rate, I received the following comments to that

diabetes comment. Although some of what you said could be true in some
cases, there are various medical reasons for it as well.
Certain medicines;
pregnancy (gestational diabetes); and

to produce insulin e.g. pancreatitis.
Drugs such as steroids, Dilantin, and others may elevate the blood sugar
through a variety of mechanisms. Certain other drugs, such as alloxan,
streptozocin, and thiazide diuretics, are toxic to the beta cells of the
pancreas and can cause diabetes. Certain syndromes (for example,
Prader-Willi, Down's, Progeria, and Turner's) may result in a
hyperglycemic state; if this state is prolonged, the result can be

When I lived in South Dakota, I worked with many special needs children
who suffered with Diabetes simply because of their syndrome.
I just thought these additional facts on diabetes should be notated.

thought I was dealing with a malady I caused because I sat to much,
while eating too much. Now I wonder if I haven't been suffering from
one, or more, of the "other" conditions you mention. I do remember
handling "Beta" beet seed, I sure hope that wasn't the culprit. As for
the "gestational diabetes" thing. Although I might look like it, I have
ever actually conceived anything. ANYWAY, I did spend some time thinking
about the following Quote which you included with your note.

It seems I was able to "jog" Lee's memory again. That's always a

today. There is so much we take for granted in life. Have you ever
thought what we'd do differently today if we knew we would die tomorrow?
The saying "live today like there is no tomorrow" is a catchy, cute
saying, but how many can actually do that? If I knew I was going to die
tomorrow I sure wouldn't be here doing what I'm doing today, but I can't
realistically stay home and do the things I'd do if I knew I was going
to die tomorrow either. What if I didn't? And I'm not making light of
the situation either so don't think that, but it is a dilemma. How do
you balance it all? Family, friends, work, responsibilities, and the
list goes on and on. About the only thing we can do is realize how lucky
we are to be alive today and make the most of it. Work on our dash, like
you say.
And I'll say again today like I did when I first sent you that note, I'm
DAMN PROUD (I don't think I said "darn" the first note either HA!) of
you for realizing it before it was too late. And also DAMN PROUD to
count you as a friend. <<< There just isn't any better folks than sugar
tramps. I am blessed to have worked with the best of the best. If they
were a chorus, Lee would certainly qualify as their maestro. And, I am
proud to be able to call him my friend as well.

Tis the season to be jolly, faa la la la la, la la and frustrated too.
If,.. by chance, the folks at "our" local Chamber office is looking for
something to do. A good spirited, well meaning, walk around "our" local
business establishments could reap significant benefit. Not only for
those business establishments, but for the people those entities require
to stay in business. (their customers)
For instance. Yesterday Pat and I were in a local business, I won't
mention the name, for the purposes of this discussion, it isn't
important. Besides, I doubt the folks at Alco would want me to.
Anyway. We were standing in line, waiting to check out,.. and waiting
to check out,... and waiting to check out. I noticed that there were
only two ladies manning (pardon the pun) the cash registers. Both lines
seemed to continue to grow with each passing minute. I couldn't see any
indication of anyone making an effort to "bring more cashiers" to the
front, and the lines kept growing.
Behind us was a nice young lady holding a very large electric crock pot
in her arms, and,.. she was waiting too. First she stood on one foot,..
then the other. Then she would leaned forward, then back. -That
procedure, I assumed, was more to relieve tension and frustration than
tired muscles. I couldn't tell for sure but it appeared that the color
of her cheeks were getting redder by the minute too. Even though it
wasn't all that cold in the store.
Finally, that pretty young lady gave up, succumbing to her
frustrations. She returned her, would be, purchase to the shelf and left
the store empty handed.
When we eventually reached the cash register, and I asked if there
wasn't anyone else in the store that could collect money from, (at least
til then) us Christmas spirited folks. I was told, with a smile, that
someone had called in sick. I didn't say it, but I thought, "well dog
bite my unite", "some 'one' called in sick" and three cash registers
stand empty.
Variations of such maladies take place often. Not just at that store
but many stores. Not just in Grafton, but in Grand Forks and Fargo too.
If, in my opinion, "we" are to expect local folks to shop locally. And,
if we are to expect they not travel to the big stores to the south to
enjoy larger selection and benefit from the economy of mega store
purchasing power. We MUST provide "our" shoppers with rapid courteous
service, at a fair and reasonable price.
The list of idiosyncrasies in the business community is long. Not only
here at home but across the country. However, those with the shortest
list will win, everytime.
That, in my opinion should be a major function of the community entity
known as "our" Local Chamber of Commerce.
All of the parties, dancing and light shows in the world, will have
little or no effect, if folks won't stop and shop here anyway.
Or so it seems to me.

from Hoople. I find it appropriate to share it again today.

Going through my mail, got this from my daughter. I thought of you when
I read it, partly because I had just read the Gazette, partly because
I'm pretty darn proud of you. It took you awhile, but it's apparent from
reading the Gazette that you realize there are more important things in
life than wearing "just the right tie" to a meeting at corporate,
working 18 hour days to get the beets out of the ground and into piles,
and being up all night making sure the factory gets the right blend of
beets. Don't feel bad that it took so long to see what the really
important things in life are, some people never do figure it out.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried
much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day
because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.
I would have sat on the lawn with my grass stains.
I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more
while watching life.
I would never have bought anything just because it was practical,
wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.
Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished
every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the
only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.
When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now
go get washed up for dinner." There would have been more "I love you's."
More "I'm sorry's."
But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every
minute...look at it and really see it ... live it ... and never give it
back. Stop sweating the small stuff. Don't worry about who doesn't like
you, who has more, or who's doing what.
Instead, let's cherish the relationships we have with those who do love
us. Let's think about what God HAS blessed us with. And what we are
doing each day to promote ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally. I
hope you all have a blessed day.

Monday morning proved to be another beautiful winter morning in the
Northland. The fog ladened morning air from warmer than normal
temperatures. Trees and hiline wires were all coated with a layer of
frost giving our landscape the appearance Terry Redlin and his palette
had visited overnight.
Tho' it may just be wishful thinking, parking spaces and lots
throughout our little community seems to be busier than usual.
The Carols and Candles Community Service at Grafton Lutheran Church is
less than a week away. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. and everyone is
welcome to attend.

I am pleased to be able to share a note I received from Stacie Sevigny,
staff writer for the Walsh County Record. Along with explaining the
Records position on the subject, and, answering some of the questions
being asked.

Record staff for a story. Just because we think it's news, we can't
always assume the person or persons want to do a story for the
newspaper. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. So for many stories
The Record is at the mercy of another person's wishes. But because you
don't see it in The Record, don't assume the contact hasn't been made.
Then other times, as is the case with Henry's Countrypolitan, the
subject(s) want to "have their ducks in a row" shall we say before they
get their story in The Record. So the timing for a story in The Record,
is again, at the mercy of someone else. And that's fine with us. Because
really, isn't a story better when all of the information is complete?
Record readers will see the story soon. I know you'll be watching for
it, Gary! Thanks for allowing me to share "the other perspective." Feel
free to share it with your readers.

I struggle with the rational (advantage) a business might enjoy by
keeping it's venture a mystery to the general public. Those that will
ultimately become that businesses customers.
Some will remember the very same rational was used during the
construction of the last main street business venture. Ekatta's had been
open, doing business, for several days already and still many local
residents were asking what "was" going to go into the drug store
building.
The management and staff of Graftons newest business, Countrypolitan,
may well have true and valid reasons for note wanting to "share all of
their ducks", until they were all in a row. I have absolutely no problem
with that. However, as the news leader, and, the largest publication in
Walsh County, I believe it would have been good business for the Record,
and, beneficial to Countrypolitan, had the Record simply shared with
it's readership, the fact that a new business was planning on opening in
the community of Grafton.
I might also add that that business was preparing to open, not only
during the largest retail sales day of the year - the day after
Thanksgiving - it is pushing deeply into one of the largest retail sales
periods of the year, namely the Christmas Holiday season. I might be old
fashioned, but I think most mainstreet businesses would agree. "It's the
money generated before Christmas, that carries them through the long
cold winters of the Northland. Or so it seems to me.
Anyway, I am thankful for Stacies note, and I / we will be looking
forward to a more complete story on Graftons new Countrypolitan
operation.

On a different note, Today, Tuesday December 12 is the anniversary of
the birth of Leona (Lansing) Sevigny. I remember once many years ago,
Local Attorney Jake Hodny asked me if it was true that Leona was my
aunt. When I said yes she was, he asked. Leona Lansing from Lankin you
mean? Again I told him yes, to which he replied. "Well I'll be ------
darned". I knew her before she moved to town. I'm not sure what all that
really means Leona. I do know that Pat and I want to wish you HAPPY
BIRTHDAY and tell you we love you very much,... and, we would love to be
able to do the things you do, when, and if, we get to be your age. Heck,
I'd like to did that now!!
A well known song once had a phrase in it, some days diamonds, some
days stones. Leona is, a center cut diamond.

On a different note, Today, Tuesday December 12 is the anniversary of
the birth of Leona (Lansing) Sevigny. I remember once many years ago,
Local Attorney Jake Hodny asked me if it was true that Leona was my
aunt. When I said yes she was, he asked. Leona Lansing from Lankin you
mean? Again I told him yes, to which he replied. "Well I'll be ------
darned". I knew her before she moved to town. I'm not sure what all that
really means Leona. I do know that Pat and I want to wish you HAPPY
BIRTHDAY and tell you we love you very much,... and, we would love to be
able to do the things you do, when, and if, we get to be your age. Heck,
I'd like to did that now!!
A well known song once had a phrase in it, some days diamonds, some
days stones. Leona is, a center cut diamond.

Over the years I have purchased many cars from Dave French. He always
seemed to provide me with the vehicle and the feeling I needed buying a
new vehicle. Dave moved to Jamestown earlier this fall although it's

Walsh County Record. The Official "Newspaper" of Walsh County and the
Cities of Grafton, Minto, Forest River, and the Adams and Grafton School
Districts and I'll be darned if I could find anything about it in there.
Then I got to thinking, "maybe the opening of a new business in Grafton
isn't news. So,.. I checked the meaning of "news" in my oft' used Funk
and Wagnels.
News,... it say's... 1. new information; information previously
unknown
2. a) recent happenings b) reports of these 3. a newscast - MAKE NEWS to
do something apt to be reported as news. YUP, that's about the way I've
always thought about news.
Evidently, "our" official County newspaper doesn't see it that
way. So,.. one of us must be wrong,... I guess it must be me. If so,
please forgive me.

Speaking of the former Bill Tollack Furniture Store building.
Please help me welcome Marion Lapp, the present owner (landlord) of that
structure. It would be very interesting to know how many businesses and
individuals have spent time in that location. Including the newest one
too, of course.

The list of decoration continues to grow in Leistikow Park. George
LaHaise and Sons Plumbing and Heating has added their name to the list.
The drive thru Leistikow is a pleasant one, not only due to the
wonderful light show, but also for the fabulous memories one might
conjure up, on the way around the park.
Tom Ganyo & the wadin pool, Earl, the giant toboggan slide, Milton
Johnston, Buster Schumacher, Hugo Kutz, the big pool Elvin & Allan
Mattson and, of course, I often think of all the time my father (Bill)
and, the rest of his gene pool has spent in "our" Leistikow Park. All
Wonderful Memories.

much, and where to send the checks. The tickets are "only" twenty
dollars each. OR, you can get five tickets (family plan) for $100. OR,
you can purchase the couple plan (other & significant other). If you
order early, and this is early, the Department will be able to take
advantage of "your" money quicker and longer.
The total, in prizes, all cash of course, is $11,520. This year
there will be two Draws per day instead of one. Of course the drawings
will be for only 6 months instead of 12. Normal day drawings will be 2
draws at $20 each. On May 28 & Sept. 3rd there will be two & 500 draws
each day. July 4th will be 2 $250 draws. May 13th & June 17th there will
be 2 draws of $200 each day. May 1st, Aug. 15th Sept. 11, Oct. 31 there
will be 2 draws each day for $100 each draw.
As soon as your name has been drawn, your name will be recorded
and your ticket is put back into the barrel for the very next draw. WOW,
what a deal.
Send checks payable to the Grafton Fire Department, in the amount

GOOFY'S BACK ==== GOOFY'S BACK
Thank God,... and the Grafton Police Department, Goofy (one of them
anyway) has been returned to his rightful place in Leistikow Park.
If you think finding a needle in a hay stack is difficult. Try finding
a Disney Character in a pile of snowcat dust and snowman appendages. I'm
not sure exactly how Goofy was discovered, altho' I'll bet it would make
an interesting television show. (Tho God knows it doesn't take much
nowdays.)
Anyway, I was driving thru Leistikow Park this morning and there he
was, right back where he started out the holiday season. I did check the
trees and light poles around the park and didn't see anyone hanging in
them, so I'm guessing "we" haven't found the scoundrel responsible for
the theft.
Oh well, the most important thing for now is that GOOFY IS BACK.

Yesterday was the day American Crystal Sugar held it's annual meeting
in Fargo. If one were to use the rumors, newspaper articles, and, some
of the coffee shop conversation as an indication. You could conclude the
meeting "might" end up to be a replication of the Battle of the little
big horn. With company management personnel, and, the agricultural
Department in particular, playing the part of General Custer. While the
grower owners, ("stockholders") were portraying the role of the Early
Americans.
I haven't heard anything specific, but I'm guessing everyone made it
through the meeting unscathed. Although,... I did see a couple
agriculturist in Cabela's late Thursday afternoon. I couldn't tell if
they were in there looking for "more ammunition" or fishing equipment.

This ones about hockey. >>> Gary,
Curt and I went to the hockey game Tuesday in town and watched our
boys win the game. They are very spunky and we look forward to a good
year. However they have decided that it is necessary to blare music
during all the intermissions full time. I can see that it could be
good to get the kids revved up but too much is too much. <<< I'm pretty
sure if I look at this note real hard, I could find a bit of me in there
as well. And, I'll bet if you took a poll - it seems like that's the
way things are done nowdays - most "older folks" would tend to agree. To
much, is too much. Or so it seems to me.

The Grafton Volunteer Firefighters were called out last night to a fire
southeast of town. The alarm went off somewhere around 1:00 am. Which of
course means most of the firefighters had little more than just gone to
bed. This morning, shortly after 8:30, they were putting their equipment
back in the fire halls. That is, of course, the equipment and personnel
that wouldn't be needed to stand guard over the buildings smoldering
remains.
Then too, I suspect, today being a "normal" work day, most of those
"volunteers" will have to go to work with out sleep, probably without
breakfast, after fighting that fire all night.
Not to be forgotten too, are the Volunteer members of the Grafton
area Valley Ambulance and rescue squad. They too were called out to the
fire, with some of those folks spending the night making sure anyone
that might need medical attention would get it ASAP as well.

research the other night and stumbled upon an interesting fact in a
early edition of the SPOILER BEAT.
While reading the Class prophecies for the future,.. dated May 20, 1987
I noticed that Darren Blanchards "prophecy" was to open up his own
drive-in called the Eastside Drive-in.
Now I don't expect anyone really believes class prophecies will ever
come to past. Certainly Darrens didn't. He ultimately opened up the
"Westside Drive-in".
And, the last time I checked, Chad Bjorneby isn't whizzing around Wall
Street either. However, Chad and B & D Flooring & Carpet cleaners, are
whizzing around cleaning living room carpets with the best of them.
Aren't memories wonderful?

Several area residents are planning ice fishing trips in the next few
weeks. I checked our freezer and we still have a few bags of ice left so
I'll be holding off til after the holiday season.
Speaking of fishing, I "caught" (pardon the pun) the Midwest Sports
channel show, on cable tv, about ice fishing at Arnesen's Rocky Point
Resort the other day. It might sound funny, but the Resort looks, on
television, just as I remember it. As a matter of fact, I can hardly
wait to get back up there again. If your looking for a super place to
spend a few days, a place in the middle of a beautiful winter

and tell them you want to fish in my very own "special" secret fishing

I really wasn't very surprised that so many folks were able to answer
yesterdays "question of the day". Actually, for a second, I even thought

The two wildest suggestions were Monica and Hilary.

surprised that a lady with such a busy schedule as Marilyn, even has
time to read the Gazette. If the trueth be known, it may well have been
by reading Jack Hagerty's columns that I "captured" the value of
"memories". Likewise too, by reading Marilyn Hagerty's column's. I have
learned the value of recognizing and sharing lifes "wonderful little
treasures".

I really wasn't very surprised that so many folks were able to answer
yesterdays "question of the day". Actually, for a second, I even thought
of offering a prize to anyone that could answer the question correctly.
The two wildest suggestions were Monica and Hilary.
The majority simply said "the Hagerty's", and, had I really decided to
offer a prize. The obvious winner would have been the following. >>> I

No. 8 named after her in Grand Forks. I think it's the same one who

surprised that a lady with such a busy schedule as Marilyn, even has
time to read the Gazette. If the trueth be known, it may well have been
by reading Jack Hagerty's columns that I "captured" the value of
"memories". Likewise too, by reading Marilyn Hagerty's column's. I have
learned the value of recognizing and sharing lifes "wonderful little
treasures".

It's been pretty quiet around town lately. Folks are busy digging
out their long Johns and extension cords.

I wasn't surprised to get several notes, and even a couple calls
about the problems in Leistikow Park. Although they all used a slightly
different approach, in general, the following note covers the issue
quite well. >>> Just read the Gazette and can say I'm not too surprised
to read about vandalism to Christmas displays in the park again this
year. Actually I can say that in looking into my "crystal ball" (no pun
intended) I can see that there will be vandalism to next years displays,
and the year after that also. It would seem to me that the only way to
stop this activity would be to catch the "dastards" (that's what I call
someone who does a dastardly deed) who are responsible for this activity
and use their punishment as an example to other "dastards" that Grafton
won't tolerate their behavior. Maybe a fitting punishment would be to
hang them from a light pole by their (insert a body part here) and shove
a candy cane up their (insert body part here) and use them for Christmas
decorations on main street for a couple days. (and nights) I can't
imagine it would be that hard to catch those responsible once someone
says "enough is enough" and makes it a priority to apprehend the
individuals responsible. I seriously doubt that Grafton's business
community has anyone still in business who has the limited mental
capacity of those doing these deeds. Once someone or everyone says lets
use our superior brainpower to catch these "dastards" and stop this
ludicrous behavior once and for all it shouldn't take long to catch
them. I don't think it's brain surgeons or rocket scientists doing this
after all.
It might take a few nights of all night surveillance, or
maybe some strategically placed motion detecting cameras like hunters
use, or better yet a sharpshooter armed with a night vision scope on a
high powered rifle hiding in an outbuilding. (That one might be a little
too strong the first time) It's either that or continue to allow those
"dastards" to rule the late nights in Grafton and spoil the efforts of
those blessed with the true Christmas spirit. It can be stopped, someone
just has to decide to stop it. Or so it seems to me. <<<< Now then,
unless I don't understand the note correctly, somewhere in there is a
solution to "our" problem. For that we should be most grateful... I
think.

Rats,...their at it again! The less than likable, lightfingered low
life's that lifted Goofy from Wally DeSautel's fantastic winter
wonderland display in Leistikow Park. Dog gone, bugger hech, shucks
anyway. Wally told me that's the fourth time "Goofy" has disappeared
from the display. Until now, Wally has made new ones and set them out
amongst the more than 100 other characters in the display.
This time, however, I'm afraid Goofy's spot will remain empty,...
unless he is returned. I doubt the dastardly deed was done
singlehandedly. I believe there's at least some others aware of Goofy's
demise. Wouldn't it be great if "one" of them would make Goofy's
whereabouts known?

Although the disappearance of Goofy is tragic, Wallys display continues
to get bigger and better every day. So too, does the rest of Leistikow
Parks displays. This year, as you enter the park you will notice a large
display of candles accompanied by a lovely sign indicting the display is
in recognition of Johanna (Mrs. George) Green "Gamma Green" and the 101
years she has spent here on earth.

Everyone knows, in this area, if we're not talking farming at
Granny's, we're talking hockey,... or,.. why the Vikings lost last
night. The mention of the Spoilers last State hockey championship must
have been the reason for the following note. >>>> I feel I must say,
although I'm sure you know, 1985 was not the first championship hockey
team ! I believe it was 1978. <<<< I'd be surprised if there isn't
"several" in our group that can expound on that message. And, it would
be really great, if they would.

I would just like to share something with you and the rest of your

This past weekend we had a Hockey tournament here in town for the Squirt
B players. Since we hosted it we had to do all the planning for it. We
called upon local area businesses to see if they would help with
donating door prizes and other items, it was so great to call these
places and they were more then willing to help. It is sooo good to have
the support from our great town. The tournament was a great success and
I would like to thank all of them for their support.

I also received a call from John Aasand and he too was very pleased
with the event. He said he was pleased with the help they received from
so many people, and he added, from so many other denominations.
Then, on another subject, John did tell me that the rumor about him
being offered a teaching position in China is, in his own words,
"absolutely true". And, he told me, for some reason Debbie is really
encouraging him to go. (Well I'll be darned!) Anyway, the rumor that he
is selling the Extra End, is NOT true.
I can only imagine, that John, being the proprietor of a lively local
liquor livery, has had several folks "tell him where to go". I suspect,
however, going to China would be one of the more interesting.
If you should decide to go to China John, don't forget to bring your
own toilet paper.

The folks in the Drayton area will have the opportunity to attend one
of our areas finest holiday season concerts.

Edward's Parish in Drayton.
It is a fantastic musical presentation. A veritable major league

I haven't heard the "official" word, but rumor has it the Federated
Church Chili-Rama-Chili feed went well yesterday.

Next Saturday, for me, is a special day I have looked forward to for
the past several years. Actually, it's a special day for a great man
folks in our area, and I suspect across the entire country.
For me, next Saturday is the day Gordy Stark would come into Granny's
with his outstretched "chapeau" in hand, ringing a bell saying, "okay
guys, it's that time of year again."
He would always relate, in some fashion, that The Salvation Army needs
our help, and that he was hear to make sure they got it. I still
remember the look on one fellows face when he tried dropping some change
in Gordy's chapeau. Gordy looked at him, and, in slightly different
words said, "is that the kind of help you'd like to get when you really
need it?". Then he took the change out of his chapeau handing it back to
the "gentleman" saying, "now lets see some real effort here".
The man put a five dollar bill in Gordy's chapeau and asked f that was
all right. Gordy looked at him and said, "it's the minimum, but it'll do
for now."
Gosh I miss Gordy, and the great work he has done over the years for
the Salvation Army. Gordy won't be walking into Granny's next Saturday,
but his spirit certainly will. I suspect, as in the past few years, Rod
Alme will fill Gordy's spot. Rod will, as does so many members of
voiture 239 of the local 40 & 8, carry on the tradition of helping the
Salvation Army just as the Salvation Army has helped so many of them.
We,... Gordy & me, and the entire 40 & 8 organization hope everyone
will do the very best they can, to support the efforts of the Salvation
Army. I would also hope that you remember Gordy's comment to his friend
about donating his "change".

Speaking of good things happening to good people. am so pleased to be
able to share the following "update" on Jillian.
Subject: Happy Holidays!
Greetings Gary and Patty,
I wanted to share some recent happenings with Jillian. They are
all "great" news so everyone can relax. We recently got a call from
Altru Hospital in Grand Forks and the Make A Wish Foundation that
Jillian was chosen as their "Hero of the Month" for the month of
November. The nursing staff and doctors of the pediatric
unit nominate a candidate each month. They chose Jillian not
because of the accident but because of her determination and positive
attitude to keep going no matter what gets in the way. She will
receive a t-shirt, plaque, and a shopping spree (gift card) at
Wal-Mart. She is very excited to say the least! We also recently
received a letter form the University of Minnesota. They would like
to use Jillian's case and recovery in an upcoming study of Traumatic
Brain Injury. Her case is very unique as her brain injury was the

I haven't heard the "official" word, but rumor has it the Federated
Church Chili-Rama-Chili feed went well yesterday.

Next Saturday, for me, is a special day I have looked forward to for
the past several years. Actually, it's a special day for a great man
folks in our area, and I suspect across the entire country.
For me, next Saturday is the day Gordy Stark would come into Granny's
with his outstretched "chapeau" in hand, ringing a bell saying, "okay
guys, it's that time of year again."
He would always relate, in some fashion, that The Salvation Army needs
our help, and that he was hear to make sure they got it. I still
remember the look on one fellows face when he tried dropping some change
in Gordy's chapeau. Gordy looked at him, and, in slightly different
words said, "is that the kind of help you'd like to get when you really
need it?". Then he took the change out of his chapeau handing it back to
the "gentleman" saying, "now lets see some real effort here".
The man put a five dollar bill in Gordy's chapeau and asked f that was
all right. Gordy looked at him and said, "it's the minimum, but it'll do
for now."
Gosh I miss Gordy, and the great work he has done over the years for
the Salvation Army. Gordy won't be walking into Granny's next Saturday,
but his spirit certainly will. I suspect, as in the past few years, Rod
Alme will fill Gordy's spot. Rod will, as does so many members of
voiture 239 of the local 40 & 8, carry on the tradition of helping the
Salvation Army just as the Salvation Army has helped so many of them.
We,... Gordy & me, and the entire 40 & 8 organization hope everyone
will do the very best they can, to support the efforts of the Salvation
Army. I would also hope that you remember Gordy's comment to his friend
about donating his "change".

Speaking of good things happening to good people. am so pleased to be
able to share the following "update" on Jillian.
Subject: Happy Holidays!
Greetings Gary and Patty,
I wanted to share some recent happenings with Jillian. They are
all "great" news so everyone can relax. We recently got a call from
Altru Hospital in Grand Forks and the Make A Wish Foundation that
Jillian was chosen as their "Hero of the Month" for the month of
November. The nursing staff and doctors of the pediatric
unit nominate a candidate each month. They chose Jillian not
because of the accident but because of her determination and positive
attitude to keep going no matter what gets in the way. She will
receive a t-shirt, plaque, and a shopping spree (gift card) at
Wal-Mart. She is very excited to say the least! We also recently
received a letter form the University of Minnesota. They would like
to use Jillian's case and recovery in an upcoming study of Traumatic
Brain Injury. Her case is very unique as her brain injury was the
normal bleeding and swelling. Anyway, we agreed and I cannot think of a
better way to help someone else or anyone else that will ever go thru
that.

Funny how things go in a small town. For several years, the business
community of Grafton seem stagnant, if not in decline. Then a man named
Allen Taylor appeared and suddenly several of our sailboat fuel storage
facilities took on a new life and the relatively negative attitude
turned positive. The old building the Getz family "gave" to the city
instead of taxes came alive again. The former Penney's building has been
converted into a computer mecca, of sorts. Louie Reglstads former City
Service station is now a working office. The former Robertson / Holiday
Gas station is home to a new local railroad operation and several new
units for the Storage Pro's dynasty.
THEN, almost like someone somewhere thought "we" might be growing to
fast. Our bustling little community was hit with several new business
closing. The entire community was stunned to learn of the closing of the
Heritage Ford, Chrysler dealership, followed by the end of the Hart
Machine business, Johnsons Used Car Sales as well as another used car
dealership on the south end of town.
Without question, it seemed for awhile like Grafton was on another
downhill spiral to Tiny Town USA.
THEN, just recently, it's looking like more folks want to move to town
than we have housing for. Just like when Allen Taylor was pumping the
sailboat fuel out of the buildings he was dealing with.
Yes, it may be still a bit of a rumor. Like the one that said Blake
Swanson was moving to town and no-one believed it,.... til he did.
Anyway, rumor has it the south building of the Heritage Ford operation
(formerly Wilson Bros, the building Russel Lykken started his dealership
in) has been given a new lease on life. The former Stenso Motors / B & W
Motors and later LaBerge & Stenso Motors building on main street also
has brand new owners (oops, that's a rumor yet) and, the latest rumor
has a brand new (maybe from Grand Forks) used car dealer moving into the
Johnson Used Car dealership on the west side of Grafton.
Added to that is the fact that several homes have also been, sold just
recently, AND, Jeanie and Alberts house has lights in it again too. It's
getting so we won't have anyplace to store sailboat fuel in town. Now
isn't that just a wonderful turn of events?
The only downside to Graftons economy this week, other than the
increase in snowblower propellent to $2.25, is that the Simonson family
has decided that "their" BP gas station shouldn't handle E-85 gas any
longer. Rats!!!

On one of the coldest days we've had so far this winter. A member of
the United States Postal Service knocked on our door and handed us a
whole box full of Florida Sunshine. What a fabulous surprise!! Thanks a
million Marjorie, for a whole holidays supply of vitamin C.
We received your wonderful Christmas card today, including your check
for this years firefighters calendar draw. That too, is a most gracious
gesture. As per your instructions, the ticket will be purchased in the
name of Valley Ambulance & Rescue, courtesy of Marjorie. Thank you so
much for caring and sharing.

Norman (Nip) Lykken is burning another candle today (Sunday Dec. 3).
According to Billy D. Nip could heat a fairly good sized home with the
candles on his birthday cake. Happy Birthday Nip, from the gang at

We mentioned Irene's Beauty Shop the other day and it generated several
memories. The closest one to home came from Dale as he wrote. >>>
My cousin, Larry Collette, forwarded your latest articles about my
mother and her boys. The home, which also housed Irene's Beauty Shop,
was at 819 Hill Ave and is now occupied by the Social Security
office. My dad, Andy Trudeau also for a time owned Andy's Food Market
on the corner which later became Kings Grocery.
Lynn Thompson's mother worked for a time at Irene's as well as Carol
Moe. After retirement, from 43 yrs in the insurance business we moved
to Redding to be close to the grandkids.
Please include me on future articles.

building you mentioned that housed the SS office has since been
purchased by the West family and now is home to a couple insurance
offices, among other things. The SS office is in a new facility on the

I am saddened to report the passing of Howard Wendelbo. The Wendelbo's
have been friends of our family for a good number of years. Howard will
be missed by many in my family, especially Denise and Brad's twins Jade
& Ty and their younger brother Trevor.

of Grafton, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2006 at his home in
Grafton. Howard L. Wendelbo was born February 18, 1937 in Grafton, ND
the son of the late Carl and Lillian (Sondeland) Wendelbo. He worked
for Joe Anderson farms and the Boone Farms. In 1958 he was as a salesman
for Grafton Equipment. He later worked at Dryden Implement in Drayton
and Hart Machine in Grafton. He then went to work for Hanson's Auto and
Implement until retiring in 1999. Howard married Rosalee Coulthart on
October 5, 1958 at St. Thomas, ND. The couple made their home in
Grafton.
Howard enjoyed woodworking. He was an accomplished cabinet and furniture
maker. He loved fishing with his twin grandsons.
He is survived by his wife Rosalee; daughter Julie (Chad) Sundby, Park
River; grandsons: Dylan and Derek Sundby, Park River; brother Carl
(Polly) Wendelbo, Fargo. He was preceded in death by his parents, three
grandchildren, brother Leroy and sister Carol.
Funeral services will be Monday, December 4th at 11:00 A.M. at the Zion
English Lutheran Church, Grafton. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 PM
at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton with a prayer service at 7:00
PM. Interment will be at the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery.
The Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton is in charge of the
arrangements.

Here we are, just one day before the giant 12 kinds of
Chili-Rama-Chili-Feed at the Grafton Federated church. Not only was my
e-mail in-box busy Thursday. So to, I expect, were a lot of e-mail spell
checks. Ole Aasand called from the sunny south and said if there were
such a thing, as a Frederadian, he probably would be one. He also told
me that the Grafton Federated Church is made up of Methodist's and
Presbyterians. Evidently, when the old Methodist Episcopal Church, --
the one "kiddy-corner" across the street from the present Federated
church -- burned down. The two groups decided to "merge" (for want of a
better term). That all took place on October 7, 1931. I read that,
because I was still checking out the inseam of my dad's pants at the
time.
Anyway,.. it would seem there isn't any such thing as Frederadians.
However, I guess, there Presbyterians, and, the way it looks
Methodistian's.
Or so it seems to me.
Rev. Lee shared the following bit to further help clarify the topic.

federated it simply means that two or more major denominations have
combined to create one church congregation. Ours for example is
Presbyterian USA and United Methodist. The church members are either

The 1985 Grafton Spoilers North Dakota State High School Hockey
Champions are certainly entitled to be mentioned more than one day in
the Gazette. So, here's some more on day two.

will name some, and depend on the rest of the Gazette family to fill in
the names I miss.
Paul Thompson was named most valuable player, and Chris Campbell, Dean
French and Scott Kalbrener were named to the all-tourney team. While
Todd Janikowski, Danny Gaustad, Mylo Einarson, Todd Durand, Robby Wentz
and Eric Evans all got their names in the Grand Forks Herald that day.

Speaking of hockey. The Spoilers and Fargo North faced off in Fargo
Thursday evening. The Spoilers allowed Fargo to hit the showers with one
to many goals. The final score,... Fargo 6 Spoilers 5. I don't know much
about hockey, but it seemed to me that the Spoilers committed way to
many fouls,... in every inning. The game may have looked different in
person, but over the radio, It sounded like "our" boys could stand a
short course in anger management.

Here we are, just one day before the giant 12 kinds of
Chili-Rama-Chili-Feed at the Grafton Federated church. Not only was my
e-mail in-box busy Thursday. So to, I expect, were a lot of e-mail spell
checks. Ole Aasand called from the sunny south and said if there were
such a thing, as a Frederadian, he probably would be one. He also told
me that the Grafton Federated Church is made up of Methodist's and
Presbyterians. Evidently, when the old Methodist Episcopal Church, --
the one "kiddy-corner" across the street from the present Federated
church -- burned down. The two groups decided to "merge" (for want of a
better term). That all took place on October 7, 1931. I read that,
because I was still checking out the inseam of my dad's pants at the
time.
Anyway,.. it would seem there isn't any such thing as Frederadians.
However, I guess, there Presbyterians, and, the way it looks
Methodistian's.
Or so it seems to me.
Rev. Lee shared the following bit to further help clarify the topic.

federated it simply means that two or more major denominations have
combined to create one church congregation. Ours for example is
Presbyterian USA and United Methodist. The church members are either
Presbyterian or United Methodist in this particular church. I'm a
United Methodist minister appointed by the Bishop to serve this
federated congregation. When the Bishop makes the decision to move me
then a call committee is formed to call a Presbyterian minister.
Presbyterians candidate just like Lutheran pastors do. Hope this
clears some of your questions.

beginning to understand why The Grafton Federated Church will be
offering so many different kinds of Chili this Saturday. One for every
denomination. Right?

around Grafton. Leistikow Park is a great place to start. Then head down
Western Avenue and look at Margaret & Shane Kaste's home. Beautiful is
an understatement for their home. Then, If you want to see a cool light
show, drive by Jim and Nicole DeSautel's home. Roll your windows down OR
tune your FM dial to 88.9, and listen to the music that their lights are

The 1985 Grafton Spoilers North Dakota State High School Hockey
Champions are certainly entitled to be mentioned more than one day in
the Gazette. So, here's some more on day two.

Grafton would be the team that knocked Central from the "always win the

just a game". World peace was not going to happen any sooner if Central

Who was on that first championship team? Ralph Kingsbury <<< Thanks a
million Ralph. That question might better be asked of Graftons coach,
Keith Lindenberg, that years coach of the year recipient. However, I
will name some, and depend on the rest of the Gazette family to fill in
the names I miss.
Paul Thompson was named most valuable player, and Chris Campbell, Dean
French and Scott Kalbrener were named to the all-tourney team. While
Todd Janikowski, Danny Gaustad, Mylo Einarson, Todd Durand, Robby Wentz
and Eric Evans all got their names in the Grand Forks Herald that day.

Speaking of hockey. The Spoilers and Fargo North faced off in Fargo
Thursday evening. The Spoilers allowed Fargo to hit the showers with one
to many goals. The final score,... Fargo 6 Spoilers 5. I don't know much
about hockey, but it seemed to me that the Spoilers committed way to
many fouls,... in every inning. The game may have looked different in
person, but over the radio, It sounded like "our" boys could stand a
short course in anger management.

Bring your pottery out to Heritage Village in Grafton this Sunday.
There's going to be folks out there that will be able to tell you what
there worth. Then hang around for the show. The lucky ones are those
that have a pot, and,... a window to throw it our of. And,... that's no
