March 11, 2008 - Tuesday

Todays Gazette is brought to you by John Aasand,... Frances and Ole's
shy basically quiet son. John Aasand will be the MC for the 2008 World
Mens Curling Championships Opening Ceremonies.

The current temperature is 30 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 31/1
Normal H/L temp for this date is 31/15
The high on this date in 1981 was 56 degrees "above". I'm guessing
that's another date Al missed in his quest to the prize with a bell in
it.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
---------------------
Rumor has it (reported on local area radio and television) the Subway
Sandwich Store fire might not have been a simple act of God,.... or
Mother Nature. It seems our local criminal investigative organization
will be busy working on two dastardly deeds at the same time.
The facts surrounding the three young athletes involved in last weeks
high school "trophy dash" being the first. The unfortunate over-roasting
of the beef and soggy lettuce in the Subway Shop being the second.
--------------------------
Still no word on the possible new home of the BP Gas Station "free
coffee clutch".
I suggested setting up a self serve caffeine ingestion station at the
former North Star Station on the North end of town. Then again, some say
they wouldn't drive that far,.... for a free cup of coffee. So, it's
starting to sound like "Yard" is going to have to offer free donuts and
cookies to entice the BP rumor mill to the north end.

I have always said, "big cities are nothing more than a bunch of small
towns bumping city limits." Darcie shared her version of "a Hero's
welcome". >>>>
Hey Gary -
I just wanted to comment on the homecoming that the hockey players
receive coming home from winning their titles - you are right - small
towns ARE wonderful. While I enjoy living in the Twin Cities - I
can't help but feel a pang of envy for the fantastic display of support
the entire community gives the young athletes "back home". My kids
are only 2 and 1 right now but I can only hope that if/when they become
young stars (be it in my eyes only) they will have the fortune of
feeling as fantastic as the kids back home must feel being escorted into
town with that hero's welcome! I'm not saying that it wouldn't happen
here in the "big city" - but I just can't imagine it would - and if it
did - it couldn't possibly be as great as it is back there!
Have a great day - Darcie Gust <<<< Thanks a million for caring and
sharing Darcie. I think the thing that made the last Bantam B "winners"
welcome home, was the fact that it involved two adjoining communities.
The only thing separating the event, was the mere 17 miles of farmland
between us.

It just doesn't seem to matter how much time I spend "thinking", in the
Gazette library, I always seem to forget something. Ralph was kind
enough to remind me of another interesting curling "factoid". He wrote.

The one thing you forgot to mention about curling is that when the
game is over the WINNERS BUY THE LOSERS a drink. I think that is the
only sport where that is done.
Ralph Kingsbury <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Ralph. From
that prospective, even when you lose, you win. Or so it seems to me.

Speaking of curling. This years MC for the opening ceremonies of the
2008 World Mens Curling Championships held April 4 at the Betty
Engelstad Arena, (John Aasand). Shared the following update while
visiting our neighbors to the north and their big curling event.

Greetings from the Briar in Winnipeg. About 10,000 people were there
for the undefeated game between Manitoba and defending world champ Glen
Howard
from Ontario. Manitoba didn't play well so it leaves the 2 favorites
Alberta and Howard as the only 2 teams left undefeated, at 5 - 0.
My good friend Barry Fry did a great job of promoting the "World at
the Ralph" April 5-13. So hopefully the Canadian Curling Fans and the
value of the Loonie (Canadian Dollar) will bring them down.
The Spoilers are still the main topic as we go for our 3rd state title
in sports 2007/2008, with boys basketball.
Hopefully I won't get stopped to long at the border so I can be back to
cheer them on this Friday.
You do a great job of promoting everything and I feel that is one of
the great reasons to live in our area. People don't know how lucky we
are and someday, everyone will be working on their dash like you.
Thanks for the space and keep the faith.
John Olaf --- the 12th <<<<
Thanks a million John, for the curling update from the land of the
Maple Leaf.

Ron wanted to share the following thought. >>> Some thing to Ponder: If
men evolved from apes and monkeys, how come there are still apes and
monkeys.
Ron Thompson <<< Well Ron, as I see it, based on some of the men I know.
We haven't yet experienced a "full and complete evolution cycle" yet.
Or so it seems to me.

I understand the folks in New York State will soon be looking for a new
governor. The present Governor of New York State can be very thankful he
isn't married to a member of the "Bobbit" family. Or, the folks from New
York State would be looking for a new Governor, AND a part of the old
one too.

GOTTA GO WORK ON MY DASH
