March 31, 2008 - Monday

Todays Gazette is being brought to you by the folks at Marketplace on
8th.

The current temperature is 35
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 39/27
Normal H/L temp for this date is 43/24
It was 80 degrees on this date in 1963.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
If someone would have told me a month ago that the former Everson
house, on the north end of Kittson Avenue, would ever get sold. I would
have thought them they are a good candidate for the loony bin.
As usual, I should have known better. The Country Realty sign in the
front lawn now say's SOLD. Once again, a "home town realty, selling our
homes in town".
------------------------
Speaking of selling around town. Harry Iverson has accepted a sales
position with C&M Ford of Hallock. As I understand it, Harry will be
C&M's new and used car salesman for Grafton and the surrounding area.
Good luck in your new venture Harry.

I received the following note from Mayor Burianek. >>>> Todd wrote;

This should have come from me sooner, but I've been busy with law and
life things. I am so proud to be the Mayor of a town that has THREE
State Championship teams. As a politician, it's my duty to try to take
credit for things I had nothing to do with, but which occurred during my
term in office but I simply can't find a way to do that. I'll keep
working on it.
I note that as I reviewed the names of all the great student athletes
on these title winning teams, I looked long and hard to find the "bad"
kids, you know the ones who are jerks but who got to play because they
are gifted athletes. I suspect that doesn't say much about me, but I did
it. It's also true, that I could NOT FIND ONE player who met that
criteria. This isn't hyperbole, it's the truth-these players do not just
excel on the playing field/ice they excel in life and are really a great
group of young people.
------- (Todd continues)
In other news, I see that three Red River students tried
(unsuccessfully) to break into our school/arena ostensibly to remove the
State Championship Trophy from it's rightful owner. I found that strange
because of all people you would think Red River boys would know that in
order to get the job done right it takes at least SIX high school boys
to do it!!!!
Todd Burianek <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Todd. (My Webster describes
"hyperbole" as exaggeration for effect, not meant to be taken
literally.) That's for us Norwegians that didn't already know.
----------------------------
Ron shared the following comments about a recent trip to the state
Capital.
He wrote. >>> Well, they did it again. The students of GHS made us
all proud in Bismarck at the State Music Conference. The Concert
Choir under the direction of Peggy Dahl-Bartunek were selected, the only
one in the State, to sing in front of all of the music instructors and
others. They were great! Another feather in the hat for the youth of
Grafton. It was a pleasure to drive them to Bismarck.
Ron Thompson <<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Ron.
-----------------------------
Speaking of community projects. I attended the Federated Church French
Toast and Sausage breakfast Saturday morning with my daughter Kelly and
her husband David. The food was fantastic, as I would have expected.
Actually, I was told that the sausage was one from Butch Gillespie's
recipe book. I was even more surprised to see that they had a member of
Robin Hood's Sherwood Forest band at the door to welcome us.
------------------------------
Speaking of community participation. Kelly Andrew's Benefit Friday
night at the Marketplace on 8th, was nothing short of fantastic. As
everyone knows, putting such an event together requires the work and
efforts of a great many individuals. It was apparent that all those
involved on Kelly's behalf, did exactly what needed to be done to
accommodate such success.
I would, however, be remiss not to specifically mention how fantastic
Susan Corneillie, her staff and the volunteers at Marketplace on 8th
were. Although hundreds & hundreds of people participated with donations
and giving of their time and energy. Susan not only provided help in
those areas, she graciously relinquished her normal evening dinner
business, for the day as well.
As I see it, we are extremely fortunate to have a facility such as The
Marketplace on 8th. And,.. it's another major reason for everyone in the
area to support it, so that it can continue doing the valuable community
services it provides to so many, so well the whole year long.
---------------------------
This coming Friday April 4 is the opening Ceremonies of the 2008 World
Men's Curling Championship's. Sundays Grand Forks Herald included a
super FAN GUIDE for the event. I read through it and found it very
informative.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find mention in it, anywhere, of the
Master of Ceremonies for the opening ceremonies of the World Class
Event.
For those that may not know. The Master of Ceremonies for the 2008
World Men's Curling Championship, opening ceremonies, is Grafton
resident, and local businessman, John Aasand.
-------------------------
It sounds like there is still lots of interest in Tom Kutz's 1948 flood
photo's.

Subject: RE: SHIVERCITY GAZETTE
Hi Gary and Shivercity Gazette readers. I was reading Thursday's
edition of the Gazette and when I got to the end I read this "Write if
you can, call if you can't, and, tell your loved ones they are,.....
before it's too late." I have read this many times before but today
it meant much more to me than it ever has before. I'm currently going
to school up in Ely, Minnesota at Vermilion Community College. It's a
pretty small school so you get to know quite a few of the people here
and develop some sort of a connection with many of the students. On
Friday we received news that one of our fellow classmates, Nate
Stetter, was involved in a fatal car accident while he was heading
home for Easter. This news hit everyone here at school very hard
because this young man was one of those that you could meet just once
and remember forever. He always had a great smile on his face and he
was one of those who definitely saw the glass half full. I didn't
really have the opportunity to get to know Nate very well but I realize
today that I missed out. He touched many people's lives here and will
never be forgot. Nate was one who enjoyed life and
all that life had to offer. With this being said, I ask that you
all think about the quote that Gary ends the Gazette with every day:
"Write if you can, call if you can't, and, tell your loved ones they
are, ..... before it's too late." Life is a very fragile thing and
can be taken away from us so very quickly and unexpectedly. I just
ask that as all of you go on about your day today that you keep Nate
Stetter and his family in your prayers please. Just as a Kenny
Chesney song says, "...take every breathe God gives you for what it's
worth.", because we never know when God will decide that it's our time
to go onto the better place.
Thanks Gary for everything you do, you truely are a wonderful person.

Thanks for caring and sharing Alysia. If somehow, in someway, just one
word I've written gives value or meaning. Then my task has received it's

It's doesn't surprise me that many folks remember Miss Cora Lykken with
the utmost respect. Carol shared the following thoughts. >>>> Dear
Gary:
Your tribute to Miss Cora Lykken surely made many of us think about
her. I have thought so many times that I could not have been a medical
transcriptionist for 30 years had it not been for Miss Cora. My
first memory of her was the bottom floor of the band room, I guess, in
the 7th grade. If only there were more teachers like her today. The
gettin, hittin and smokin made me laugh because being here in Tennessee,
you hear that a lot. Ha!!
Thanks for your tribute....
Carol Sterling <<< Thank you for caring and sharing Carol.
+++++
Joanne shared her thoughts about Miss Lykken and also mentions her
appreciation to Tom Kutz for his 48 Flood Show.
Hi, Gary,
Your comments on Cora Lykken brought back so many memories. Hearing her
teach Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" echoes in my mind..."Quoth the
Raven, 'Nevermore' ". Three generations of my family had Cora as a
teacher: my grandfather, Jarl; my dad, Marvin; and my sister, Jeanne and
I. We were blessed by her dedication to enriching the lives of the
students that she taught.
Also special thanks to Tom Kutz for the historical slide show on the
Flood of '48!
Joanne (Pederson) Sheridan <<<<
Thanks for caring and sharing Joanne. It is very apparent that
wonderful people, the likes of Miss Lykken, are never forgotten. Aren't
memories wonderful?

The Picture Show of the 48 Flood gave Twila reason to share the
following.
>>> Please relay onto Tom what an awesome slide show that was! Thanks
much for sharing. <<<<

This one comes from the parents of the MC of the 2008 Men's World
Curling Championship opening ceremonies.
They wrote, >>>
Thanks so much for sending out the Gazette so regularly. It really
keeps us informed as to what is happening in Grafton. Just wanted to
tell you that we really appreciate all the time and effort you put into
doing that and also how much we enjoyed Tom Kutz's 1948 Flood
pictures. They were just great. Thanks again. Ole and Frances
Aasand <<<<
Thanks for caring and sharing your kind words of appreciation. All I do
is turn on the light in the lighthouse. That process really isn't
successful, unless it brings the ships to port.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-----------------------
Wednesday was a slow news day in Shivercity. While doing a little
research in the Gazette library. I got to thinking how lucky I am that I
don't have to jump over Dinosaur dung on the way to the mailbox. I
thought about how lucky I am that the glaciers that dredged out the Red
River Valley and the entire Great Lakes system melted leaving us with
some of the most fertile, best farm land in the world.
Then,.... (I must have eaten to much dinner) I got to thinking about
the person most responsible for me using "ing" on the end of words
appropriate for it's use. At one time, I remember, I did think "in" was
good enough. Gettin, hittin, smokin etc, etc, seemed so much easier to
say than getting, hitting and smoking,.... I thought. That, of course,
was before I "learned" differently from Miss Cora Lykken.
I remember Cora telling me, "Mr. Moe, you quit being so lazy. You are
supposed to pronounce these words as they are written." Now, that would
have been enough for most folks. Not for me however. Oh I did hear what
Miss Lykken had said alright, but for some reason, it wasn't til I felt
the WHACK on my hand from her ruler, that I truly understood just
exactly what she meant.
Miss Lykken was also the one that taught me to sit up straight when I
read. Again, it wasn't her, specific, common sense words that convinced
me that I would be able to remember (retain) more of what I read, that
way. NOPE, it was a very strategically placed English Text Book,....
upside my head that got the point across.
So here I am, almost fifty years later, sittING up straight, usING as
much of Miss Cora Lykken's lessons as I can remember. (and wishing I
could remember more) AND, my head and hand hardly hurts,....... any
longer.
Cora taught in Auburn from 1906 to 1910 then in Hannaford from 1910 to
1919. She taught fifth grade at Grafton Central School in 1919 and in
1920 she started teaching junior high students. (I was one of those)
Miss Lykken retired from teaching on May 31, 1960.
Miss Cora Lykken was born on May 19, 1885 and spent her entire life
giving everything she could, to everyone willING to accept it. She
passed away on Nov. 25, 1980. She was laid to rest in the Lanstad
Cemetery located on the Hans Lykken land near Auburn.
Miss Cora Lykken gave me numerous reasons to be thankful. I have often
wished I had told her so, while she was here. Somehow, I trust she can
hear me now, anyway. I certainly hope so.

===== 1948 FLOOD PICTURES ====
Hi Gary,
I've had lots of interest in the photos of the '48 flood. I have
prepared three options for your subscribers to view them:
1. They can use this link
http://photoshow.comcast.net/tkutz
to see a slide show of the photos
2. They can email me at tkutz@comcast.net and I will send them a
PDF file of the booklet that can be viewed on their computers
3. They can email me at the same address and I can send them a
printed copy of the booklet. However, because of the cost of printing
and postage I will need to charge $12.50 for each booklet.
The first two options are free and will give the viewers photos of
"fair" resolution. Also, at the link site, the slide show
"Paving of Main Street" is still available for viewing.
I hope that your subscribers enjoy the slide shows. Just a
little bonus they receive with their "paid up" subscription to the
Shivercity Gazette !
Tom <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Tom. AND, for all your hard
work putting together this presentation. I've looked at the booklet you
sent several times and each time I notice something new. I am amazed
you're willing and able to send it out for only $12.50. That's a lot
less than Wal-Mart would do it for.

I received good news from my doctor Tuesday. He told me my weight was
"just right",... for a man eight inches taller than I am. So all I have
to do is lose some weight,.... or grow a lot taller. {:-)>
-----------------------------
If you happen to have something - anything - you would like to turn to
cash, AND you would like to help out a very worthy project at the same
time. The next message is especially for you. Although the note was
addressed to me, I am sharing it with everyone. The note. >>>>
Gary:
My name is Rick Sunstrom and I'm the pastor of River of Life
Community Church in Grafton. I was wondering if you'd be willing to
mention the upcoming charity auction for the Grafton Christian Youth
Center and the Free Indeed Program (which is a new residential Christian
drug/alcohol addiction recovery support program that is starting in
Grafton) The auction begins at 10:00am on Saturday, March 29th at the
Centennial Center in Grafton. Donated and Consigned items can be dropped
off at the Centennial Center on Friday March 28th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The auctioneers involved (Arlyn Askim and Jerry Sunstrom) are donating
all of their commission to the charities, so even if a person doesn't
want to donate an item, they can turn something they have sitting around
the house into cash and still help charity. All they have to do is bring
the item to the Centennial Center and we'll auction it off and deduct
20% commission for items under $1000 and 10% for items over $1000. If
someone is concerned that an expensive item might sell for too little
money, they can set a minimum price with the auctioneer that they'd be
willing to sell it for. I'd appreciate any help in publicizing this
event.
Thanks, Rick <<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Rick. I'm
not sure if the folks on both coasts and the Gulf have time to get their
stuff hear. Many of the rest should have.
Then, just as important as getting stuff to auction off, is for lots of
people to show up "to buy". Or so it seems to me.
---------------------------
The mention of Minto's Cafe closing gave Erick reason to share the
following. >>>
Hey Gary,
This is Erick from Combined Wireless, the Alltel Agent in Grafton,
My wife is Sarah from the Minto Cafe. We just wanted to thank you for
your kind words regarding the closing of the Minto Cafe. It was a
difficult decision to make, but we felt it was the proper time to do so
based on the local economic conditions. Times change and unfortunately
sometimes adapting to them is not financially responsible or feasible.
Raising prices further to compensate for higher costs of operations
defeats the purpose and allure of a small town establishment.
Just like myself being in business, as well as most business people in a
small town, we run into the fact that it sometimes gets difficult to
compete not with the businesses in Grand Forks, but the idea that the
selection is greater and the prices are cheaper in Grand Forks. I know
for a fact that myself and Wayne's are cheaper than or at least
competitive with Grand Forks on all cellular products and the best part
is if he doesn't have something, he sends customers to me and vice
versa. That is what small town business should be...if you can't help
yourself, help your neighbor. It will come back to help you in the long
term. I do not live in Grafton, but I do the majority of my shopping
here and in Oslo, my home town. I sometimes pay more, I sometimes pay
less, but I am here and the gas bill is cheaper the less you drive.
My hope is that with the closure of Minto Cafe, and the prospect of 3
Main Street businesses in Oslo for sale, that even more awareness and
support for local businesses comes about.
Once Again, thanks
Erick Soltvedt <<< Thank you Erick, for caring and sharing. I wish Sarah
the very best in her future ventures.

The booklet Tom Kutz put together containing 66 pictures of the 1948
flood is starting to generate some interest.
The first paragraph of the preface says.
"In the spring of 1948, Grafton, North Dakota experienced severe
flooding as never before. Long time residents could not remember flood
waters ever reaching Main Street. Living in an area where spring
flooding was routine the residents had become complacent." A bit later
in the preface it says, the flood of 1948 was called "The Flood Of The
Century."

as strong as an ox, I eat like a pig, I sleep like a cat laying in the
sun and I'm as stubborn as a mule. Dog gone bugger heck shucks, maybe I
should be going to see a Veterinarian.
I wonder if the Kindness Animal Hospital in Grand Forks, has an
opening for a short fat Norwegian, with a limp???
--------------------------
Rumor on the street is that Rick & Nann Pedersen have found a nice
retirement residence in the windy peninsula east of the Gulf. If that's
a fact, then it follows that the house on the other end of my block will
be looking for new names on the mailbox in the next month or two.
It's a great location, right across from the Centennial Center and the
high school. It would be a super place for a farmer as the property line
touches three implement dealers and automobile dealer and is just across
the street from an aerial spray applicator.
-------------------------
I didn't even have the entire Gazette list sent out yet and Chuck sent
the following regarding the 48 flood. He wrote. >>>>
Would like to get a copy of Toms flood pictures. How? I still have a
big envelop of pictures from the flood that my dad had collected.
Seems like yesterday. The flood of 1950 was bigger but was handled
better because of the experience of 1948.
Chuck Stenso <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Chuck. The
booklet Tom put together also has a great picture of Stenso Motors.
--------------------------
When I took todays "Weekly Source" out of the mailbox. The first thing
I noticed was large print saying the Minto Cafe will be going out of
business. Their last day will be March 28. Small towns cannot afford to
lose any business, especially one that feeds it's residents workforce.
=== The message read. ===
With much debate and a heavy heart we have made the decision to close
the Minto Cafe.
We appreciate all the support our customers have given us over the
years. Out last day open will be March 28th.
We ask that you please support all of the Minto area businesses. Once
again "Thank You" and God bless.
Sincerely, Sarah and Nancy <<<
I wish Sarah and Nancy the very best in their future endeavors, and, I
hope the Minto community will be able to find a new restauranteur very
soon.

March 24, 2008 - Monday

Todays Gazette is being brought to you just 60 years after the flood
of 1948.
------------------------
The current temperature is 24.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 26/11
Normal H/L temp for this date is 37/20
It was 78 degrees on this date in 1978. Evidently, Al Gore must have
missed that year for the movie.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
Pat and I enjoyed Easter Sunday dinner at Marketplace, as we have for
a number of years. The food was fantastic, as always, and we had the
opportunity to visit with many friends from throughout the entire area.
The temperature didn't set any records (still no sign of global warming
in Shivercity) but the sun was shining in a clear sky with just enough
breeze to carry the smell of fresh cooked turkey all over town.
Then,... Sunday evening, we had the opportunity to experience what I
consider to be a most unique presentation of the Story of Easter, in
song and verse, with our good friends from the Mennonite Community at
Mandt.
In the past, I have described their singing as if the sky had opened
up, allowing us to hear the angels sing. P. T. Barnum might have
described it as, A World full of Magical Musicale Musicians. Their music
carries a message so much greater than the mere compilation of the
words.
As we returned home and talked about our evenings experience, we both
agreed how lucky we are, to live in such a wonderful country, and that
we have such fantastic people to share it with.
-----------------------
I was also pleased to find this note from George and Diane Cox on my
computer Sunday evening. >>>
Gary, I never open my emails on Sundays. Guess the prayer requests
somehow pulled me to the computer. Michael Jensen and Kelly Andrews will
be in my prayers today. God Bless
George and Diane Cox <<< Thanks a million George
and Diane for your kind thoughts. Along with Mike and Kelly we spent
time yesterday thinking of Susan, Ione, Eleanor, Danny the Eikenberry's,
Farmer and so many more.
+++++
George sent another message yesterday too. He wrote >>>>
Speaking of the World Curling Championship did you know that Bob
LaBonte will be a sweeper of the first rock thrown at the opening
ceremony on Friday the 4th. I'm looking forward to the opening ceremony
with Bag Pipes, introductions of flags and teams, throwing of the first
rock all open to the public at The Ralph. After that, John Aasand will
be the MC at the opening banquet, what a day to fly Grafton pride!
George Cox <<< Thanks again George. It's begining to look like the 5th
thru the 13th is going to be a truly fabulous event.
-------------------------
Then,... to add even more to the glorious events of Sunday and Sunday
night. I received the following wonderful news from Christine. She
wrote. >>>
Gary, you have no idea how much I appreciate the fact you included
my request in your Gazette. I truly believe we received the news we did
yesterday because of all the prayers lifted up for my brother Michael.
We were told the surgery would leave Michael in a body brace and it
would take more than one year to recover. If the tumor wasn't benign,
they would have to close him up and work out a different plan. Doctors
were expecting to graph a portion of his hip bone to use on his spine.
Instead the outcome was better than we could have ever imagined.
Doctors removed a portion of the tumor for testing. IT WAS BENIGN!!
Thank God. They continued the procedure and were able to remove the
entire tumor and leave at least 50 percent of the bone which meant
they didn't have to graph. Instead of wearing a body brace, he was
fitted with a neck brace mostly for comfort. Recovery time is expected
to be one month. Oh, how God has blessed our family!! I want to thank
you so much and thank your readers for their prayers. It was truly a
miracle!! We started a caring bridge site. The address is
www.caringbridge.org/visit/michaeljensen Blessings to you always my
friend, sincerely, Christine Jensen <<< Thanks a million for caring and
sharing such great news Christine. Please tell Mike "Hi" from his "old"
agriculturist, and, tell him to hurry up and get out of that "dad burn
hospital".
-------------------------
Todays Gazette is "sponsored" by the Flood of 1948. Tom Kutz put
together a compendium of photographs from around Grafton that were
originally taken by Gerald Freedland of the Walsh County Record, Don
Rydholm, perhaps Harold Lunde and maybe some others. The 66 photographs
document the depth of damage to homes and businesses. They also allow
the viewer a glimpse of what life was like in Grafton in the spring of
1948.
Little did residents know but only two short years to the future, to
the day, Grafton would be again covered by flood waters. Deeper than
this flood, the 1950 flood would become known as "The Flood Of The
Century".
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Tom. I have already spent a
lot of time looking thru your "booklet". And, I'm sure, I will spend
even more in the coming days. The pictures from the top of the water
tower are especially interesting.
I am forever grateful Tom, that you were willing to spend so much time,
energy, and money to put such a "booklet" together. And, especially that
you were willing to share one with me.

------------------------
After sending out Fridays Gazette, I "thought" I wouldn't send out
another til Monday. Then I received the following note from Christine.
After reading it I decided I must share her message, and her request, as
soon as possible.
Christine wrote; >>> Hi Gary,
I tried to email you yesterday but I received an error. I will attempt
again. I am sitting at a computer at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. My
big brother Michael Jensen will undergo surgery today to remove a tumor
which is wrapped around his spine. The surgery is expected to take all
day long. I feel powerless and the only thing I know how to do is ask
God for help. I'm wondering if you could ask your readers to say a
prayer for my brother and his doctors. I believe in the power of prayer;
in many energies lifting their voices. I would really appreciate any
help you can give me. Blessings always, Christine Jensen <<< Thanks a
million for caring and sharing Christine. I know Michael personally,
and, I have enjoyed working with him in the beet business. I saddens me
to hear of his very serious medical problem.
Sunday, those of Christian faith will celebrate Easter, the
resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. I would be most grateful to those
that would include Michael in their prayers.
---------------------------
Speaking of keeping folks in their prayers, remember to keep Kelly
Andrews in your prayers as well. Matt shared the following message
related to Kelly's challenges. Matt wrote; >>> Gary,
I had no idea that Kelly was sick, thank you for your Gazette. I've
known Kelly as a good friend for almost twenty years now, and I'm
shocked to hear about her adversity - she is a wonderful, beautiful
girl. As you know Gary, I have been living in North Carolina, and I
don't get too many reports from back home. This one sets me back in my
seat. Kelly, I love you so much. You have our prayers and hearts. Thanks
Gary.
-Matt Mattson <<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Matt. A whole lot of people
are going to work very hard on Friday the 28th, (that's the date of
Kelly's Benefit at Marketplace on 8th) to prove to her, and the rest of
the world, how many people really care and how many people are willing
to share.
-------------------------
While I was writing about the bottles, cans and paper scattered around
town, I was thinking of dad in the old Rambler station wagon, dragging
litter to the car with his cane.
To borrow a line from a famous country singer. My dad was recycling,
before recycling was really cool. Anyway, Kathee shared the following
thoughts. >>>
As soon as you mentioned the trash revealed by the melting snow, I
thought of your dad. He would be driving the old brown Grafton Floral
station wagon and start to veer off into the other lane or too close to
the curb. Then he would open his door, lean over and pick up some trash
and throw it in the back of the station wagon.
Now we have signs that tell us who has adopted a certain section of a
road to keep clean. Bill Moe adopted all of the streets of Grafton.
Just yesterday I was thinking that I should get outside and pick up the
trash in our farmyard, deposited there by the wind blowing junk out of
the back of the farm vehicles or by our dog who finds all things
valuable and carries them onto the driveway. But that trash is now under
a good 5 to 6 inches of snow. The trash will have to wait for the next
thaw.
Happy Easter.
Kathee <<< Thanks a million Kathy, for caring and sharing your memories.
----------------------
Gene and Alice cared enough to share the following. >>>
Hi Friends...Just a note to say we hope you have a wonderful
Easter. Here in the Western foothills of the Sierras it is finally
spring. There is still lots of snow on the peaks but that is good for
the farmers on the CA side. However, our trees are nice and green and
daytime temps are in the 70s again. Last week we finally got to see
some of our local attractions...the Capitol Building in Sacramento, and
the Stanford Mansion. We love to tour historical places, and have put
this off for a long time. Our granddaughter was here the week before,
and we finally got to Sutter's Fort and Coloma (where gold was first
discovered in CA) about 13 miles away from Auburn. For the first time in
about 30 years we will miss Good Friday services. Yep, both of us
have the flu. Ugh! It has hung on all week. We are hoping to be
able to go to Easter services, but that's probably all we will be able
to manage. Don't want to spread the junk around. It is the 'drain
every ounce of energy from the body so you feel like a slug' type of
flu. Also the 'cough until you turn purple' kind. I managed to
walk down to the mailbox today, and then had to crash in a chair for an
hour. Other than this, we are enjoying our time in CA, while still
looking forward to heading east in a month or so. Gene has to try out
the salmon fishing season before we go (unless they cancel it, which
they are threatening to do.) He got to go clamming on Tomales Bay
with the grandkids last Monday, and at least had one good day this
week. We now have lots of clams and plans for some chowder next
week! We are also planning some painting, fencing, planting projects
for before we leave so we will be "enjoying" the great outdoors quite a
lot. Hope you all have a wonderful and blessed Easter, and thanks for
keeping in touch. Isn't e-mail great! Gene & Alice <<< Thanks a
million for caring and sharing. I was really hoping this would be the
Easter that "someone" would be able to explain how in the world a rabbit
lays an egg without breaking it.

Much of the snow in town is giving way to bare pavement, brown grass,
pop, beer cans and enough water bottles to fill the Riverside Swimming
Pool in Grand Forks.
I'm not sure if we were gone last winter, or, if I just didn't pay
close enough attention. However, I certainly do not remember the snow
storm that dropped all the trash I see,.. as the snow melts.
I did take a quick drive over the Park River north of town Thursday
afternoon. So far, the river appears to be almost the same level as it
has been all winter.

The "old" American Legion Club facilities south of the Post Office on
Griggs Avenue was a destination facilities for a number of reasons. I'm

memories created there would more than fill it from floor to ceiling.
Like the memories it brings back for Al Berry
He wrote. >>>
Hi Gary,
The mention of the old Legion club brings back memories of my
Grandma, Cecilia Sass who also worked there for a number of years, most
of them before I was ever around. When I was growing up, Grandma was
very close friends with Gladys, Sarah, and Dorothy and I remember when
those girls would get together and laugh and visit and reminisce about
old times and talk about the good times they had at the Legion. I
remember overhearing a few of their visits and thinking that it must
have been an awfully fun place to work. I still run into Sarah every now
and then, and she looks as young as ever and always reminds me of how
she worked with my Grandma at the Legion. Anyway, thanks for the great
work Gary, keep it up.
Sincerely,
Al Berry <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Al. I have always found the
"old" Legion building somewhat unique in that it actually didn't have a
"ground level" floor. You either had to go down stairs to the restaurant
and bar, or, you had to go upstairs to Dance and partake in the juice
that can make folks do silly things.

Speaking of Easter, wonderful people and mountain tops. Dianne sent the
following note. >>>
Hi Gary and Pat.
First of all I want to wish you a very HAPPY EASTER and keep the
Gazette coming. We enjoy it as much as if it started today. Thanks.
I also want to have you say a prayer for my mother as March 20th is
my MOMS birthday. She would have been 87. She was a wonderful MOM, and

of Mildreds Birth. She truly was a very special lady, married to a
special man. And, together, they raised a fantastic family.

Dianne also wants to share the following update on Mt. St. Helens from
her Uncle Johnny Burns.
Subject: Mount St. Helens
On February 21st 2008, scientists monitoring Mt. St. Helens strained
to get a pulse from the mountain. Many tries since have resulted in no
pulse. During this time we had a couple of clear days and geologists
were around the mountain. They had stopped going into the crater
because of hazardous conditions, risks, and much snow. From GPS
instruments it was determined that no new growth existed on the dome
although its top was still hot. New warning levels dropped the alert
level from watch to advisory.
{on a scale of 1 to 4 this would be 3. 1 being the highest alert}. The
Aviation alert
went from orange {one step below imminent eruption} to yellow. The
off-limits of Mount St Helens remains. Much snow in the cascades. Mt
Hood Meadows reporting over 500 inches. At Mt St Helens, a report in
December was 8 feet of snow at the 2700 foot level. No report
since. No predictions but this advisory: Stay tuned.
Uncle Johnny. <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Johnny. By
way of reciprocation, I should tell you I had coffee this morning at
Wally's with Gene and Suzanne. I showed Suzanne a copy of a Souvenir
Grafton Parade Band brochure (I believe) from 1956. It includes a
picture of the five La Berge's. The five Anderson brothers, that
together accounted for over 122 years of band experience and a map of
the US showing most of the trips the band had made up to that time. The
pamphlet also features a picture of the Majorettes on that date. Barbara
Lykken was the youngest of the group and the oldest one.... was just a
little older. Of course the folder also included a complete list of the
band members, during that time frame.
Joe, in his infinite wisdom, called the brochure a "souvenir of the
Grafton Parade Band". There is little doubt in my mind it was, and is.
One, I'm certain, many children or grandchildren of those band members
would be very pleased to have as a remembrance. And, to a certain
extent, that just might become possible.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY - TOM WATKINS
Today is the day that Tom Watkins celebrates the anniversary of his
birth. Over the years I have watched Tom grow from a young lad with red
hair and freckled skin, to a successful businessman who's hair has been
replaced by a suntanned surface the color of caucasian. His skin, for
the most part, has lost possession of it's freckles in favor of "mature"
wrinkles and crows feet.
Besides being a significant member of the nations leading Subaru
Dealership in Monument. Tom heads up a very successful annual golf
tournament for the benefit of worthy causes in his are.
To that end, Tom would like to share the following information.

Wendy shared the following comments about the past weekends skating
event at the Centennial Center. She wrote. >>>>
Hi dad, just a quick note on this year's skating show. I have attended
many in the past but this was my first as a "nana" of a young skater.
Great job by everyone involved and Kylie's Great Great Uncle A.K. set up
a stand for supporters to purchase flowers and/or stuffed animals to
present the skaters...WHICH OF COURSE we did. All in all Kylie ended up
with close to a dozen flowers and a cute little bear. She was thrilled.
Jeff and I laughed as she spotted us and threw us a little smirk
followed by a wave. It is truly fun to be from a small town with huge

The mention of the "old" Legion club Monday gave Kelly reason to share
the following. Kelly wrote, >>>> Hi Dad.
I must be getting up there as the old Legion really brings back
memories to me also. It was my first job there, as a bus "girl" and
dish washer. I didn't have anywhere near the longevity of Gladys,
Sarah or Dorothy but I do remember working with them very well. They
were wonderful ladies to work with and I learned a lot from them. I
think of that era of my life every time Dorothy comes into the Country
Smokehouse.
Aren't memories wonderful?
Love you, Kelly <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Kelly.
It sure would be interesting to see a list of all the wonderful people
that worked at the "old" Legion Club.
-------------------------
Bert sent this about the "old" Legion plus some clarification. He
wrote. >>> Gary, I hope you realize I was not forgetting the cost of
lives, blood and sorrow when I described the financial cot of war. I
was just thinking when I read the part about the Legion club when it was
just south of the post office about old times.
Do they still have the dances at Minto, Park River, Lankin and
Mountain etc. like they used to have? I remember how after the
dances we all gathered at the "East Curb" afterward eating the most
delicious cheeseburgers ever made, summer and winter.
Is there anything like that now in the area? Bert <<<
I suspect the answer regarding the dances, is yes, most small towns
still hold dances "sometimes". Although I'm almost certain they're not
like they used to be. As for a place to go for a fantastic burger
(especially a Monster Burger) the best drive inn (curb service) around,
is The Westside Drive Inn. You have to get there early though, because
they close before most dances are over.
---------------------------
There probably are more pro's and con's to the discussion of war and
peace and military service than there are people. Here is just one more
thought to be added to those discussions. >>>
Morning Gary
Just read the morning Gazette.
Interesting article about the war.
You have to remember also, the troops over there are all volunteer. They
don't have to be there. They chose their profession the same as a
policeman, fireman, doctor or whatever.
Cousin Lynus <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Lynus.
Somehow your comments reminded me of the time I worked for the city of
Grafton. As I was crawling down into a sewer manhole to clean it out. I
remember, vividly, looking up and hearing Elmer Sondeland say. And you
actually asked for this job?
Less than a week later, I was dumping a trash barrel into the city
garbage truck when Willy Johnson asked me. What in the heck did you ever
want this job for?
Now that I really think about it. There probably is a difference
between volunteering for the armed services and working for the city
sewer department. You don't have to take quite so much "poop" (I cleaned
that up for the kids and clergy in the group) from the folks in the
army.
Funny isn't it, how one thing reminds us of another.

As submitted by John Aasand.
Gary,
With all the news of the Spoilers basketball victory and the
anticipation of you winning the Harley I decided to wait to report to
you and your readers about the Brier. Winnipeg had over 160000 fans for
10 Days so it was a huge success. Alberta went undefeated to
become Canada's representative at the worlds in Grand Forks. If I'm not
mistaken Kevin Martin of Alberta is the skip who played against our
Grafton boys at the Junior
World in Victoria BC. That team consisted of Darin Holt, Darin Kress,
Brett Davis, and Duane McGregor.
I guess time fly's even in the curling world. I talked to a lot of
people who are coming to the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks for
the World Mens Championships.
The people in Grand Forks were doing a great job of PR. I would be
wonderful if The Ralph could help out some more as obviously they have a
larger web to help with the promotion.
It's not every day you get to see the Chinese and Australians curl, so
it should make for a great 10 days.
It's just a rumor but Vessel Ville seems to be getting a group
together to cheer on the Cheek (SP) Republic.
The opening ceremonies are at 6pm Friday. If you enjoy the sound of
"Bagpipes" you will really be impressed with the Canadian Bagpipers
presentation at this event.
~~~ Speaking of special things coming up. The weekend of March 28-29 is
the benefit for Kelly Andrews at Market Place. That's on Friday from 4
to 8:30. All you have to bring is money, that makes everything real
easy.
~~~ On Sat. from 7am to 2pm is the Annual French Toast Breakfast at
the Federated Church. So besides helping
out you can get feed too.
(I still can't believe Gunner shot those geese.)
Remember the benefits and the world championships April 5th thru the
13th. John Olaf the 12 <<<< Thanks a million John, for the
super update and for reminding us of some very important upcoming
events.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please welcome Marilyn Johnson, Pat & Wes Sabourin and Carol
(Hopperstad) Sterling to the Gazette family.
------------------------
If, in fact, the white pickup with large green strips on the side is
any indication. It certainly appears possible that we now have a member
of the US Border Patrol living in town.
There doesn't seem to be any connection between the profession of our
newest community resident and ramifications of the message from the
pulpit of Sen Barrack Obama's mentor, Reverend Wright.
-------------------------
I mentioned Bill Meier the other day and that gave Diann Bratlie reason
to share the following thoughts. She wrote: >>>>
Hi, Gary.
You mentioned Bill Meier in a recent Gazette. I never knew Bill, but
when I first came to Grafton to work, the Social Service gang often ate
at the old Legion and they served a Meier's Special. My understanding
was that it was a healthy lunch for him as he had some medical condition
and he needed to eat properly. It consisted of a small steak, a scoop of
cottage cheese and a vegetable all for the outrageous price of ninety
cents. That was in 1965. I also remember how we all were upset when it
went to $1.25. <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Diann. Whenever someone
mentions the "old" Legion. When it was south of the Post office on
Griggs Avenue. I am reminded of the Saint and Sinner special. That
consisted of a full (although small) lobster and a steak, choice of
potato, vegetable and salad all for $4.95. AND, almost always, I hasten
to add, served by Gladys Watkins, Sarah Wosick or Dorothy Shereck. All
three ladies, everyone would agree, were exceptionally proficient in
there profession.
--------------------------
Kathee shared a website so everyone could listen to the state tourney.
Although I understand a few did have some problem hooking up with it,
Joanne evidently didn't have any trouble.
She wrote; >>>>>
Hi, Gary,
Special thanks to Kathee Carlson for her "heads-up" on the broadcast
of the Class B Basketball Championship on the Internet. I was able to
listen to the play-by-play here in Wisconsin. Having attended the
championship game in 1964, I was thrilled with the Spoiler victory. It
brought back so many memories! Congratulations to the Spoilers!!
Joanne <<<< Thanks a million Joanne, It's always great to hear some of
the "stuff" we share has value.
--------------------------
Speaking of value. I'm sure almost everyone as heard somewhere about
the fantastic costs involved with "the war". It seems especially easy
for some politicians to say that the War is costing us billions, even
trillions of dollars.
Bert takes a somewhat different view of those costs. He wrote. >>>>
Subject: The cost of the war---deceiving the people.
Obama, Clinton and others use the cost of the Iraq war falsely when
they say how much it is costing the taxpayer. They want us to believe
that when we lose a $22,000,000.00 armed Apache helicopter $22M was
lost and that could not be further from the truth. All we really gave
up was what you could get for the junk left over from a scrap metal
dealer and that, if estimated high, would be maybe $1000.00.
So where is the other $21,999,999.00? It was all spent right here
in the US for everyone and everything it took to build the chopper.
The people that designed and built the electronics, designed the
chopper, mined and processed the metals and trucked all the parts to
be assembled. and those who put it all together.
These people then spent the money for homes, food, cars, health,
schools and those that benefited from their spending passed it on again
to the farmers, teachers, car manufacturers and their laborers etc. and
on again from there. Blow off a $15,000,000.00 cruise missal and the
actual loss to the taxpayer would be maybe $100.00 for the junk. The
Chopper and the missile had a combined actual loss of $1100.00--NOT
$37M as they would have you to believe.
As for the troops, they are paid if they are home or in Iraq. I
talked yesterday to a Marine who finished his 3rd tour in Iraq and he
said the only money he spent there was on base, enough to get in some
personal items and enough for an occasional card game. All the rest was
deposited in the US for his house, car payment and family expenses.
He never spent 2 cents into the Iraq economy.
I will be the first to say War is pure hell if you are personally
caught up in it in any way. But like it or not it is a boom for the
economy with it's one ended spending. Before WWII, Korea, Vietnam our
economy was in trouble--- But not afterwards. We have economy problems
now caused by the stupid decision not to use our own oil. But like it or
not the mideast problems have kept the economy going as well as it
has with all the finance it keeps turning over and lets it work it's
way through the various levels.
What a blessing it would be to have honest straight talking
politicians. Or maybe they are to ignorant to truly understand how the
economy works. This was brought to my attention during the Vietnam war
when I was attending the General Motors Institute of technology
classes in Flint Michigan doing studies on the economy for GM
executives in 1969.
Bert A. Overland <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Bert. I do agree that much of
the money for the material costs of the war actually do end up here.
Unfortunately our dead and maimed soldiers return home too. In fact they
have given much more than mere money. Or so it seems to me.
Well, they did it. The boys brought another championship trophy home
for the trophy case.
Although the championship game was won on Saturday night - we have the
trophy to prove it. The team that won the tournament goes back many
months, or several years before Saturday nights event. It's also a fact
that several of the boys on the team were credited with accumulating the
53 points represented in the final score.
However, another fact, just as important, is the members of the team
that didn't get quite so much, or any, "on floor" recognition. They're
the members of the team often referred to as "Grafton's depth".
Sometimes it's easy to get tied up in the moment. When pictures and
interviews are taken after the final buzzer.
I have the front page complimentary picture of the Spoilers, provided
by The Forum and Gate City Bank. That picture shows 17 members of the
Grafton Spoiler Basketball Team. 12 members wearing numbered jersey's
with Spoilers written across them, Julia Lunday; Statistician, 3
assistant coaches and the Head Coach. Together, it was that group of
dedicated individuals, and the fans. that brought home the Championship
trophy.
Last week I wrote about a couple of young musicians and a grandpa
playing for the folks at Sunset. I am pleased to share the "grandpa's"
note about that event. Danny wrote. >>>>
Gary,
We had a great time entertaining the residents at the Sunset
Home Thursday afternoon. They really do enjoy old time music,
especially when played by a couple of young guys like Josh and Ryan.
All they wanted to know about me, and, it was Father Lommel that asked,
was who the old gray haired guy was that is playing the piano.
And, to think at one time my nickname was Red. As far as the revival
of "Danny and the Radiators" - that was short lived. One night we played
at a wedding dance and that name was suggested. Who else other John
Aasand would come up with a name like that? I guess he thought we
should have a more upbeat name than the Dan Burianek Band.
Speaking of bands, does anybody remember the DJ Band from Minto, and the
reason they went by that name? How about the Al Neva Band from Minto, or
the Rythm Barons from Grafton? That's just to name a few bands I played
with.
Thanks Gary, Dan. <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Dan. We
seem to spend a lot of time and energy speaking of, and writing about
local athletes and their sporting events. It's high time we start
showing the same amount of interest in the other facets of academia as
well.
Or so it seems to me.
---------------------------
I received the following note from Cindy on Saturday. >>>> Gary,
We had a big scare this week when my daughter was hit by a semi in
Columbus Ohio on the eway. The driver did not see her in his "blind
spot". He sent her spinning past four lane of traffic hitting the median
wall. He said he thought he ran over something, until he saw her flying
across the lanes of traffic. My daughter got knocked out and had no idea
what happened until she woke up going the wrong way down the highway
with people flying by her. NO ONE else stopped but the trucker. She
called 911 herself! The great news is that she basically is alright.
My point is the poor trucker made a mistake, but did the right thing by
stopping. He admitted he was wrong and had insurance, which I have
learned alot of truckers don't these days. My daughter has received TONS
of calls and letters from so called attorneys wanting her business to
file suit against this young man for hitting her. How ridiculous is
this? How about all the people that flew by her and didn't stop to help?
Yes he hit her, it was an ACCIDENT. And I thank God she wasn't seriously
hurt. She lost a car, not her life. He did all he could. Give this young
26 year old responsible man a break! These lawyers and chiropractors and
medical centers and massage places and all these other places need to
find other people to call in there free time. Maybe a homeless shelter.
Not out to make a free buck on this young man.
Where is this mans' justice? There I have said my peace.
Thanks for caring and sharing.
Cindy <<<
Thank you for caring and sharing Cindy. I am very pleased your daughter
will be fine. I tried to come up with a "profound statement" regarding
Cindy's message, and kept returning to, "the world would be a better
The mention of Harold K. Johnson in the Gazette gave Lowell reason for
the following comments. >>>>
Gary:
Your correspondent who reminds us of General Harold K.
Johnson is quite correct in that he should be remembered by us all - as
should all of the veterans of all wars and conflicts, including the one
totally mislabelled as a "police action", a despicable term, especially
in view of its costs. At 6:00 AM, research is not my bag, but I seem to
recall that the KIA (killed in action) figures for Korea in 3 years
either almost equalled or exceeded those of the years in Vietnam.
From a personal view, when LBJ reached down to select HKJ to
be Chief of Staff, there were a number of generals senior to him (70+
?). I was serving in Seoul at 8th Army HQ's under two of them, General
Hamilton H. Howze & Lt. Gen Theodore Conway. The ego of "Triple H" was
such that the main duty of his Colonel Aide seemed to be the function of
preceding "H" in HQ, shouting "Clear the Halls" whenever the exalted one
was entering or leaving the HQ. In the immediate backwash of HKJ, there
were a # of us who might have chosen to "delay" any required visits to
HQ. <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing. And, for allowing us
another view, "of the way things were."
-------------------------
I often receive notes from former Graftonites expressing their
frustrations with their inability to do something for "the Old Home
Town." Many said, if they lived closer they would like to do
"something" for community they grew up in.
Then,... I was sitting in the Gazette library (researching) the other
day and suddenly realized. Many former Graftonites already have done
much to help the "Old Home Town."
Over the past several years hundreds of members of the Gazette family
have donated significant amounts of money to benefit a whole variety of
community causes. From the Grafton Volunteer Firefighters to Unity
Hospital. For individual benefits to help defray their medical expenses,
and the fund raiser for the Grafton Youth Hockey Program.
Tonight I will be attending Grafton's Annual Youth Hockey Benefit
program at the Marketplace on 8th. I will expect to see many of the same
folks there this year as I have seen in the past. Many of them, if not
most of them, have given not only their financial support, but also a
significant amount of their time and energy as well.
I will thank as many of those folks, as I am physically able to, for
doing what they do for the youth of our community and area youth.
However, I will be very well aware, that even though all of those folks
are working their hearts out. It is the help and interest of the folks
from other zip codes, that puts our community projects, "over the top".
For that I extend my most sincere and heartfelt thanks to all the folks
right here at home. And, thanks a million to all of you that might have
wished you could have been here to help bring your favorite project
along.
---------------------------
Tonight (Saturday) will be a busy one. Obviously, many will be in Fargo
for the State "B" High School Basketball Tournament. I'm sure there will
be a bunch at Marketplace on 8th for the MEGA RAFFLE for Youth Hockey
(while watching the game on big screen TV at the same time) and another
contingent will be out at the Centennial Center for the Skatin' Up
Country - Figure Skating Show--- THIS WEEKEND! Adults $6.00 / Students
$4.00--- Centennial Center Saturday - March 15th at 7:00pm / Sunday,
March 16th at 1:00pm Country Songs... Country Theme... Concessions will
be available! Approximately 100 kids from our area will be taking part-
ages ranging from 3yrs - 18 yrs!.
AND,... then of course we can't forget the activities going on at the
curling club. Grafton is hosting the state high school speil this
weekend, there are 12 boys teams and 6 girls teams participating. If
anyone is looking for some great curling entertainment, this would be a
great weekend for it. I think Grafton has 3 teams, maybe even more,
entered.......
AND,... that doesn't include various other "Legal" entertainment
presentations in establishments open til 2:00am for the adult crowd.
-------------------------
Speaking of liquor. Here's an interesting factoid for you. >>>
Subject: WALKING AND BEER:
A recent study found the average American walks about 900 miles per
year.
Another study found Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of beer
a
year.
That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon.
Kind of makes you proud to be an American. Right?
nights Championship Basketball game. Kathee sent the following; >>>
For those of us who cannot pick up the televised version of the North
Dakota Class B Basketball Tournament, there is a live audio feed that
can be found at www.classbbasketball.com I am hoping to be next to my
game. Kathee Carlson <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Kathee.
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
The biggest news in Grafton Thursday happened in the Fargo Dome at
Fargo Thursday night. Grafton faced Lisbon in the late night event.
Quarter ending scores showed Grafton leading all. The 1st, 10 to 2. At
half time it was 22 to 15 and the 3rd period ended 38 to 25 with a last
second 3 point buzzer beater by Paul Holand (Paul was also named player
of the game). The final score was 50 to 48 and really gives you a super
indication of the intensity of the game right to the final bell.
The Grafton Spoilers will face Watford City in Friday nights semi
championship round. Regardless of the outcome of the final games. The
Spoilers, in my mind, were champions when they left town for the state
tournament on Thursday. And, they will be champions when they return
home when the tournaments are over.
-------------------------
Memories of Elton Ringsak and his tremendous accomplishments gave
reason for the following note. >>>
Hi Gary,
I am certainly not putting Elton Ringsak "down". He was a true
hero in our house and my Dad really admired him. In turn I admired my
Dad for serving in WW II as well. However, Grafton had another
military member that should be mentioned so that the younger
generation doesn't forget him. Look up and see what you can find
on Harold K. Johnson. He was the Army Chief of Staff under
President Johnson and in the beginning of the book, "Honorable
Warrior" there is a little bit about his Grafton background and a
teacher that most of us have had! It is up to us older (don't you
hate that word?) people to let the young ones know that there are a lot
of significant people who have their roots in our hometown. While I
love where I live, Grafton will always be home and we exports always are
proud of "important" people who started out the same as we did, in a
small town, not too much money, but a lot of love and support from our
family and community. Seems to me, you are the best person to do this
as EVERYONE reads the Gazette!
signed, NO NAME <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing. Although
I think it's best to leave the serious research to those more capable. I
did find the following after receiving the North Dakota Roughrider
Award. >>>>
Gen. Harold K. Johnson 1912-1983 A professional soldier, who became
Chief of Staff of the United States Army in 1965, General Harold Johnson
was the youngest man to hold the position since General Douglas
MacArthur.
Johnson was born in Bowesmont, North Dakota, in 1912. He graduated from
Grafton High School in 1929, and West Point Military Academy in 1933.
Captain Johnson was operations officer for the 57th Infantry in Manila,
prior to the Pearl Harbor attack by Japan. The 57th was ordered to
Bataan where the Japanese were engaged. Johnson was promoted to major
and then lieutenant colonel and given command of the battalion. After a
surrender to the superior Japanese force, Johnson and the 57th were
forced on the Bataan Death March, which claimed 8,150 prisoners.
Johnson saw combat again in Korea, emerging from the conflict a full
colonel. In 1956, he was made a brigadier general. In 1957, Johnson was
named Chief of Staff of the US Seventh Army in Germany. General Johnson
was chosen Chief of Staff to NATO's Central Army Group in West Germany
in 1959. In 1964, General Johnson was named Chief of Staff of the US
Army and was awarded his fourth star. <<<<
General Johnson was laid to rest in Washington's Arlington Cemetery, as
was Elton Ringsak.
Fridays Wheel of Fortune will feature "a former Graftonite". Some may
remember the following note from a while back. Well,.... here it is
again, to remind us to watch the show. >>> Hi Gary,
The Sieben girls were all together for the past few days in
California. Helen, Janelle, Beth & I were enjoying some R&R in weather
that was about 30-40 degrees warmer than Grafton. Janelle & Beth
decided to try get on the Price Is Right and were successful!! Beth
(Smith) got on stage and ended up winning over $18,000 worth of
merchandise including one of the showcases. She greeted her 3
daughters in Valley City on the show. It will be aired on March
14. It has been lots of excitement for all of us. We talked a lot
about Grafton and still agree it was a great place to grow up!!
Thanks for your news-I really enjoy it and it brings me "home" when I
read it. I agree that the girls' basketball team should be mentioned
more--my sister-in-law, Laurie, is the coach. Good luck to them!!
Thanks again, Debbie (Sieben) Robinson
Charlotte, NC <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing. Isn't that
neat? Two honest to goodness war heroes, a Hollywood Game Show Winner,
and, our Grafton Spoilers boys basketball team is on their way to
winning the State High School class B basketball Championship.
-------------------------
Speaking of neat, wonderful and fantastic. I am pleased to report the
birth of Arabella Hilde Morelock. The Little Princess was Born 3-11-08,
she tipped the scale at 7 pounds 9 oz and measured 20 1/2 inches from
head to toe.
Arabella's proud parents are Kera (Stoltman) and Clint Morelock and her
proud grandparents are Larry and Deb (Mattson) Stoltman.
Rumor has it, Arabellas Great Grandfather, Allen Mattson, popped more
than a few buttons spreading the word of her arrival. And rightfully so,
I might add.
From the entire Gary Moe gene pool
CONGRATULATIONS; Kera & Clint and your gene pool. I am certain little
Arabella will be raised to love people and life, and to appreciate the
world she lives in, as much as her GREAT-Grandmother Hildegard did.
Today our high school basketball team leaves for the state high
school class B tournament. They will be escorted out of town by a large
contingent of family and friends, fans and well wishers, lead by
flashing lights, sirens and horns.
We recognize all of the young men and women representing our
academic and athletic community winners and champions. If, during their
quest to improve themselves physically and academically, they should
garner a trophy for their efforts. That will be another milestone in
life that they've earned, and, one that they'll not soon forget.
Speaking off tournaments and things not soon forgotten. Jeff and
Lonnie Pedersons daughter Taylor will remember this years event for her
efforts as well. >>>
Gary and Pat
We also wish the Grafton Spoilers boys BB team all the best
this weekend. We got to see them play in December in Bismarck while
attending a tournament that the Kindred girls BB team was in (Taylor
plays on this team). The boys looked very impressive! The Spoilers play
the last game of the evening session on Thursday. Our daughter Taylor
Pederson has been asked to sing the national anthem for the evening
round. She will sing at 6:30 on Thursday evening. She must get her
musical talent from her uncle John! I thought you might be able to see
her on the TV at 6:30. TAKE CARE!!
Jeff and Lonnie <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing. You can be sure we
will be watching for, and listening to Taylor sing tonight.
Speaking of music. Today at 2:30 all the folks at the Grafton
Lutheran Sunset Home will enjoy some real, honest to goodness, down home
musical entertainment.
Joshua Bradley Burianek will share his musical abilities with the
Sunset Home residents. Although Josh is only 12 years old, he has
already acquired many of the musical skills and abilities of his grandpa
Danny, and his uncle Amby Burianek. Brad and Amy
Burianek's son, Josh, not only plays the accordion, (of which he has a
significant collection acquired from family members) he also plays the
piano and drums.
Today, Josh will not only be joined by his grandpa Danny, (a well
recognized musician in his own right) John & Mary Dusek's son Ryan will
be joining in on the drums. The Musical Trio shouldn't have any trouble
bringing back those wonderful, warm Old Time Music Memories of the past
to the residents of Grafton's Lutheran Sunset Home.
The lucky folks attending today's musical performance may well be
witnessing the "revival" of, a group once referred to as, ==
"Danny and The Radiators." ==
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that
participated in the 2008 Grafton Youth Hockey MEGA RAFFLE promotion.
Especially all the members of our Gazette family, your participation was
a vital part in the success of the whole program.
Thanks to, to all of the local and area people that have spent
untold hours and so much effort in making the Grafton Youth Hockey
program the kind of success it enjoys.
Sometimes memories dim and fade and to often, it seems, we tend to
forget. As a young married couple without much, (actually none) money.
We "shopped" for the best grade used furniture we could afford. It took
many visits and over a year to fill our two room apartment with
furniture. I still remember two things very well from that "we can't
even afford to pay attention era."
One of them was the direct and matter of fact way Bill Meier
talked and treated us in his Grafton Paint & Glass Store. And the other
was the wonderfully warm and kind person in that store that was always
willing to spend more time with us, than we could afford.
I somehow find it ironic, that the store that once filled
our apartment with furniture now belongs to my son and daughter in law.
And, that I never enter that building that I don't think of Bill Meier,
the man that gave us so much valuable advice, and Vi Holt a beautiful
gentle lady with a wonderfully warm smile.
Today it saddens me to share the obituary of that most kind
and gentle lady. ~~~~~~~~~~~
