GOOFY'S BACK ==== GOOFY'S BACK
Thank God,... and the Grafton Police Department, Goofy (one of them
anyway) has been returned to his rightful place in Leistikow Park.
If you think finding a needle in a hay stack is difficult. Try finding
a Disney Character in a pile of snowcat dust and snowman appendages. I'm
not sure exactly how Goofy was discovered, altho' I'll bet it would make
an interesting television show. (Tho God knows it doesn't take much
nowdays.)
Anyway, I was driving thru Leistikow Park this morning and there he
was, right back where he started out the holiday season. I did check the
trees and light poles around the park and didn't see anyone hanging in
them, so I'm guessing "we" haven't found the scoundrel responsible for
the theft.
Oh well, the most important thing for now is that GOOFY IS BACK.

Yesterday was the day American Crystal Sugar held it's annual meeting
in Fargo. If one were to use the rumors, newspaper articles, and, some
of the coffee shop conversation as an indication. You could conclude the
meeting "might" end up to be a replication of the Battle of the little
big horn. With company management personnel, and, the agricultural
Department in particular, playing the part of General Custer. While the
grower owners, ("stockholders") were portraying the role of the Early
Americans.
I haven't heard anything specific, but I'm guessing everyone made it
through the meeting unscathed. Although,... I did see a couple
agriculturist in Cabela's late Thursday afternoon. I couldn't tell if
they were in there looking for "more ammunition" or fishing equipment.

This ones about hockey. >>> Gary,
Curt and I went to the hockey game Tuesday in town and watched our
boys win the game. They are very spunky and we look forward to a good
year. However they have decided that it is necessary to blare music
during all the intermissions full time. I can see that it could be
good to get the kids revved up but too much is too much. <<< I'm pretty
sure if I look at this note real hard, I could find a bit of me in there
as well. And, I'll bet if you took a poll - it seems like that's the
way things are done nowdays - most "older folks" would tend to agree. To
much, is too much. Or so it seems to me.

The Grafton Volunteer Firefighters were called out last night to a fire
southeast of town. The alarm went off somewhere around 1:00 am. Which of
course means most of the firefighters had little more than just gone to
bed. This morning, shortly after 8:30, they were putting their equipment
back in the fire halls. That is, of course, the equipment and personnel
that wouldn't be needed to stand guard over the buildings smoldering
remains.
Then too, I suspect, today being a "normal" work day, most of those
"volunteers" will have to go to work with out sleep, probably without
breakfast, after fighting that fire all night.
Not to be forgotten too, are the Volunteer members of the Grafton
area Valley Ambulance and rescue squad. They too were called out to the
fire, with some of those folks spending the night making sure anyone
that might need medical attention would get it ASAP as well.

Funny how things go sometimes. I was in the "library" doing a bit of
research the other night and stumbled upon an interesting fact in a
early edition of the SPOILER BEAT.
While reading the Class prophecies for the future,.. dated May 20, 1987
I noticed that Darren Blanchards "prophecy" was to open up his own
drive-in called the Eastside Drive-in.
Now I don't expect anyone really believes class prophecies will ever
come to past. Certainly Darrens didn't. He ultimately opened up the
"Westside Drive-in".
And, the last time I checked, Chad Bjorneby isn't whizzing around Wall
Street either. However, Chad and B & D Flooring & Carpet cleaners, are
whizzing around cleaning living room carpets with the best of them.

Several area residents are planning ice fishing trips in the next few
weeks. I checked our freezer and we still have a few bags of ice left so
I'll be holding off til after the holiday season.
Speaking of fishing, I "caught" (pardon the pun) the Midwest Sports
channel show, on cable tv, about ice fishing at Arnesen's Rocky Point
Resort the other day. It might sound funny, but the Resort looks, on
television, just as I remember it. As a matter of fact, I can hardly
wait to get back up there again. If your looking for a super place to
spend a few days, a place in the middle of a beautiful winter
wonderland. Give Arnesen's Rocky Point Resort a call at 1-800-535-7585
and tell them you want to fish in my very own "special" secret fishing
hole. If they tell you they're not sure where that is, that's because
it's a secret.

I really wasn't very surprised that so many folks were able to answer
yesterdays "question of the day". Actually, for a second, I even thought
of offering a prize to anyone that could answer the question correctly.
The two wildest suggestions were Monica and Hilary.
The majority simply said "the Hagerty's", and, had I really decided to
offer a prize. The obvious winner would have been the following. >>> I
got it. They are both written by that lady who has sewage lift station
No. 8 named after her in Grand Forks. I think it's the same one who
keeps track of pigeons in Grand Forks. mgh

surprised that a lady with such a busy schedule as Marilyn, even has
time to read the Gazette. If the trueth be known, it may well have been
by reading Jack Hagerty's columns that I "captured" the value of
"memories". Likewise too, by reading Marilyn Hagerty's column's. I have
learned the value of recognizing and sharing lifes "wonderful little
treasures".

congregation may soon be lead by a man of the cloth with a last name
very close to yours truely. If this is still a secret, please don't tell

It's been pretty quiet around town lately. Folks are busy digging
out their long Johns and extension cords.

I wasn't surprised to get several notes, and even a couple calls
about the problems in Leistikow Park. Although they all used a slightly
different approach, in general, the following note covers the issue
quite well. >>> Just read the Gazette and can say I'm not too surprised
to read about vandalism to Christmas displays in the park again this
year. Actually I can say that in looking into my "crystal ball" (no pun
intended) I can see that there will be vandalism to next years displays,
and the year after that also. It would seem to me that the only way to
stop this activity would be to catch the "dastards" (that's what I call
someone who does a dastardly deed) who are responsible for this activity
and use their punishment as an example to other "dastards" that Grafton
won't tolerate their behavior. Maybe a fitting punishment would be to
hang them from a light pole by their (insert a body part here) and shove
a candy cane up their (insert body part here) and use them for Christmas
decorations on main street for a couple days. (and nights) I can't
imagine it would be that hard to catch those responsible once someone
says "enough is enough" and makes it a priority to apprehend the
individuals responsible. I seriously doubt that Grafton's business
community has anyone still in business who has the limited mental
capacity of those doing these deeds. Once someone or everyone says lets
use our superior brainpower to catch these "dastards" and stop this
ludicrous behavior once and for all it shouldn't take long to catch
them. I don't think it's brain surgeons or rocket scientists doing this
after all.
It might take a few nights of all night surveillance, or
maybe some strategically placed motion detecting cameras like hunters
use, or better yet a sharpshooter armed with a night vision scope on a
high powered rifle hiding in an outbuilding. (That one might be a little
too strong the first time) It's either that or continue to allow those
"dastards" to rule the late nights in Grafton and spoil the efforts of
those blessed with the true Christmas spirit. It can be stopped, someone
just has to decide to stop it. Or so it seems to me. <<<< Now then,
unless I don't understand the note correctly, somewhere in there is a
solution to "our" problem. For that we should be most grateful... I
think.

Molcajete. Aida's Family Restaurant. Featuring Authentic Mexican
Cuisine. When it does open, It can be found on the north end of Grafton.
Look for the building in the shade of the Grafton Water Tower at high

the biggest surprise I ever had. On top of that, my wallet is a lot
lighter from following them around Laughlin and we are still celebrating
my birthday.

Rats,...their at it again! The less than likable, lightfingered low
life's that lifted Goofy from Wally DeSautel's fantastic winter
wonderland display in Leistikow Park. Dog gone, bugger hech, shucks
anyway. Wally told me that's the fourth time "Goofy" has disappeared
from the display. Until now, Wally has made new ones and set them out
amongst the more than 100 other characters in the display.
This time, however, I'm afraid Goofy's spot will remain empty,...
unless he is returned. I doubt the dastardly deed was done
singlehandedly. I believe there's at least some others aware of Goofy's
demise. Wouldn't it be great if "one" of them would make Goofy's
whereabouts known?

Although the disappearance of Goofy is tragic, Wallys display continues
to get bigger and better every day. So too, does the rest of Leistikow
Parks displays. This year, as you enter the park you will notice a large
display of candles accompanied by a lovely sign indicting the display is
in recognition of Johanna (Mrs. George) Green "Gamma Green" and the 101
years she has spent here on earth.

Everyone knows, in this area, if we're not talking farming at
Granny's, we're talking hockey,... or,.. why the Vikings lost last
night. The mention of the Spoilers last State hockey championship must
have been the reason for the following note. >>>> I feel I must say,
although I'm sure you know, 1985 was not the first championship hockey
team ! I believe it was 1978. <<<< I'd be surprised if there isn't
"several" in our group that can expound on that message. And, it would
be really great, if they would.

I would just like to share something with you and the rest of your
readers.
This past weekend we had a Hockey tournament here in town for the Squirt
B players. Since we hosted it we had to do all the planning for it. We
called upon local area businesses to see if they would help with
donating door prizes and other items, it was so great to call these
places and they were more then willing to help. It is sooo good to have
the support from our great town. The tournament was a great success and
I would like to thank all of them for their support.

The chili feed at the Federated church went real well! I now know that
there are indeed 13 different types of chili. If you'd like to know how
they ALL tasted, feel free to ask Tommy (Henricksen) from The Strand. He
tried every last one! ----- <<< (It's good to have guys like Tommy
around. It makes the dishwashers job so much easier. Right Tom?)
I also received a call from John Aasand and he too was very pleased
with the event. He said he was pleased with the help they received from
so many people, and he added, from so many other denominations.
Then, on another subject, John did tell me that the rumor about him
being offered a teaching position in China is, in his own words,
"absolutely true". And, he told me, for some reason Debbie is really
encouraging him to go. (Well I'll be darned!) Anyway, the rumor that he
is selling the Extra End, is NOT true.
I can only imagine, that John, being the proprietor of a lively local
liquor livery, has had several folks "tell him where to go". I suspect,
however, going to China would be one of the more interesting.
If you should decide to go to China John, don't forget to bring your
own toilet paper.

Rats,...their at it again! The less than likable, lightfingered low
life's that lifted Goofy from Wally DeSautel's fantastic winter
wonderland display in Leistikow Park. Dog gone, bugger hech, shucks
anyway. Wally told me that's the fourth time "Goofy" has disappeared
from the display. Until now, Wally has made new ones and set them out
amongst the more than 100 other characters in the display.
This time, however, I'm afraid Goofy's spot will remain empty,...
unless he is returned. I doubt the dastardly deed was done
singlehandedly. I believe there's at least some others aware of Goofy's
demise. Wouldn't it be great if "one" of them would make Goofy's
whereabouts known?

Although the disappearance of Goofy is tragic, Wallys display continues
to get bigger and better every day. So too, does the rest of Leistikow
Parks displays. This year, as you enter the park you will notice a large
display of candles accompanied by a lovely sign indicting the display is
in recognition of Johanna (Mrs. George) Green "Gamma Green" and the 101
years she has spent here on earth.

Everyone knows, in this area, if we're not talking farming at
Granny's, we're talking hockey,... or,.. why the Vikings lost last
night. The mention of the Spoilers last State hockey championship must
have been the reason for the following note. >>>> I feel I must say,
although I'm sure you know, 1985 was not the first championship hockey
team ! I believe it was 1978. <<<< I'd be surprised if there isn't
"several" in our group that can expound on that message. And, it would
be really great, if they would.

This past weekend we had a Hockey tournament here in town for the Squirt
B players. Since we hosted it we had to do all the planning for it. We
called upon local area businesses to see if they would help with
donating door prizes and other items, it was so great to call these
places and they were more then willing to help. It is sooo good to have
the support from our great town. The tournament was a great success and
I would like to thank all of them for their support.

Todays Gazette is being brought to you, in part by, The Ottawa House. A
three story frame hotel that stood on the property now home to B & D
Flooring & Carpet Cleaning. The Ottawa House was destroyed by fire May
3, 1905

We received another shipment, an inch or so, of snowman parts last
night.

I haven't heard the "official" word, but rumor has it the Federated
Church Chili-Rama-Chili feed went well yesterday.

Next Saturday, for me, is a special day I have looked forward to for
the past several years. Actually, it's a special day for a great man
folks in our area, and I suspect across the entire country.
For me, next Saturday is the day Gordy Stark would come into Granny's
with his outstretched "chapeau" in hand, ringing a bell saying, "okay
guys, it's that time of year again."
He would always relate, in some fashion, that The Salvation Army needs
our help, and that he was hear to make sure they got it. I still
remember the look on one fellows face when he tried dropping some change
in Gordy's chapeau. Gordy looked at him, and, in slightly different
words said, "is that the kind of help you'd like to get when you really
need it?". Then he took the change out of his chapeau handing it back to
the "gentleman" saying, "now lets see some real effort here".
The man put a five dollar bill in Gordy's chapeau and asked f that was
all right. Gordy looked at him and said, "it's the minimum, but it'll do
for now."
Gosh I miss Gordy, and the great work he has done over the years for
the Salvation Army. Gordy won't be walking into Granny's next Saturday,
but his spirit certainly will. I suspect, as in the past few years, Rod
Alme will fill Gordy's spot. Rod will, as does so many members of
voiture 239 of the local 40 & 8, carry on the tradition of helping the
Salvation Army just as the Salvation Army has helped so many of them.
We,... Gordy & me, and the entire 40 & 8 organization hope everyone
will do the very best they can, to support the efforts of the Salvation
Army. I would also hope that you remember Gordy's comment to his friend
about donating his "change".
If, you are not able to contribute directly into a Kettle. Please
consider sending a check to the Salvation Army PO box 182, Grafton ND.

Speaking of good things happening to good people. am so pleased to be
able to share the following "update" on Jillian.
Subject: Happy Holidays!
Greetings Gary and Patty,
I wanted to share some recent happenings with Jillian. They are
all "great" news so everyone can relax. We recently got a call from
Altru Hospital in Grand Forks and the Make A Wish Foundation that
Jillian was chosen as their "Hero of the Month" for the month of
November. The nursing staff and doctors of the pediatric
unit nominate a candidate each month. They chose Jillian not
because of the accident but because of her determination and positive
attitude to keep going no matter what gets in the way. She will
receive a t-shirt, plaque, and a shopping spree (gift card) at
Wal-Mart. She is very excited to say the least! We also recently
received a letter form the University of Minnesota. They would like
to use Jillian's case and recovery in an upcoming study of Traumatic
Brain Injury. Her case is very unique as her brain injury was the
normal bleeding and swelling. Anyway, we agreed and I cannot think of a
better way to help someone else or anyone else that will ever go thru
that.
The study will take place in Feb. when we go back for her followup at
Gillette to make it more convenient for us. NICE! There is
nothing invasive, just alot of questions, paper tests and an MRI.
The study will take a full year to complete but I think it is a
wonderful opportunity.
I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and wonderful

We continue to experience "winter like" weather. After all, it is

Funny how things go in a small town. For several years, the business
community of Grafton seem stagnant, if not in decline. Then a man named
Allen Taylor appeared and suddenly several of our sailboat fuel storage
facilities took on a new life and the relatively negative attitude
turned positive. The old building the Getz family "gave" to the city
instead of taxes came alive again. The former Penney's building has been
converted into a computer mecca, of sorts. Louie Reglstads former City
Service station is now a working office. The former Robertson / Holiday
Gas station is home to a new local railroad operation and several new
units for the Storage Pro's dynasty.
THEN, almost like someone somewhere thought "we" might be growing to
fast. Our bustling little community was hit with several new business
closing. The entire community was stunned to learn of the closing of the
Heritage Ford, Chrysler dealership, followed by the end of the Hart
Machine business, Johnsons Used Car Sales as well as another used car
dealership on the south end of town.
Without question, it seemed for awhile like Grafton was on another
downhill spiral to Tiny Town USA.
THEN, just recently, it's looking like more folks want to move to town
than we have housing for. Just like when Allen Taylor was pumping the
sailboat fuel out of the buildings he was dealing with.
Yes, it may be still a bit of a rumor. Like the one that said Blake
Swanson was moving to town and no-one believed it,.... til he did.
Anyway, rumor has it the south building of the Heritage Ford operation
(formerly Wilson Bros, the building Russel Lykken started his dealership
in) has been given a new lease on life. The former Stenso Motors / B & W
Motors and later LaBerge & Stenso Motors building on main street also
has brand new owners (oops, that's a rumor yet) and, the latest rumor
has a brand new (maybe from Grand Forks) used car dealer moving into the
Johnson Used Car dealership on the west side of Grafton.
Added to that is the fact that several homes have also been, sold just
recently, AND, Jeanie and Alberts house has lights in it again too. It's
getting so we won't have anyplace to store sailboat fuel in town. Now
isn't that just a wonderful turn of events?
The only downside to Graftons economy this week, other than the
increase in snowblower propellent to $2.25, is that the Simonson family
has decided that "their" BP gas station shouldn't handle E-85 gas any
longer. Rats!!!

On one of the coldest days we've had so far this winter. A member of
the United States Postal Service knocked on our door and handed us a
whole box full of Florida Sunshine. What a fabulous surprise!! Thanks a
million Marjorie, for a whole holidays supply of vitamin C.
We received your wonderful Christmas card today, including your check
for this years firefighters calendar draw. That too, is a most gracious
gesture. As per your instructions, the ticket will be purchased in the
name of Valley Ambulance & Rescue, courtesy of Marjorie. Thank you so
much for caring and sharing.

Norman (Nip) Lykken is burning another candle today (Sunday Dec. 3).
According to Billy D. Nip could heat a fairly good sized home with the
candles on his birthday cake. Happy Birthday Nip, from the gang at
Granny's. We shook for you yesterday,.... and you lost. You can send the
cash along when you send you check for the firefighters drawing tickets.

We mentioned Irene's Beauty Shop the other day and it generated several
memories. The closest one to home came from Dale as he wrote. >>>
My cousin, Larry Collette, forwarded your latest articles about my
mother and her boys. The home, which also housed Irene's Beauty Shop,
was at 819 Hill Ave and is now occupied by the Social Security
office. My dad, Andy Trudeau also for a time owned Andy's Food Market
on the corner which later became Kings Grocery.
Lynn Thompson's mother worked for a time at Irene's as well as Carol
Moe. After retirement, from 43 yrs in the insurance business we moved
to Redding to be close to the grandkids.
Please include me on future articles.

building you mentioned that housed the SS office has since been
purchased by the West family and now is home to a couple insurance
offices, among other things. The SS office is in a new facility on the
west end of town.

I am saddened to report the passing of Howard Wendelbo. The Wendelbo's
have been friends of our family for a good number of years. Howard will
be missed by many in my family, especially Denise and Brad's twins Jade
& Ty and their younger brother Trevor.

of Grafton, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2006 at his home in
Grafton. Howard L. Wendelbo was born February 18, 1937 in Grafton, ND
the son of the late Carl and Lillian (Sondeland) Wendelbo. He worked
for Joe Anderson farms and the Boone Farms. In 1958 he was as a salesman
for Grafton Equipment. He later worked at Dryden Implement in Drayton
and Hart Machine in Grafton. He then went to work for Hanson's Auto and
Implement until retiring in 1999. Howard married Rosalee Coulthart on
October 5, 1958 at St. Thomas, ND. The couple made their home in
Grafton.
Howard enjoyed woodworking. He was an accomplished cabinet and furniture
maker. He loved fishing with his twin grandsons.
He is survived by his wife Rosalee; daughter Julie (Chad) Sundby, Park
River; grandsons: Dylan and Derek Sundby, Park River; brother Carl
(Polly) Wendelbo, Fargo. He was preceded in death by his parents, three
grandchildren, brother Leroy and sister Carol.
Funeral services will be Monday, December 4th at 11:00 A.M. at the Zion
English Lutheran Church, Grafton. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 PM
at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton with a prayer service at 7:00
PM. Interment will be at the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery.
The Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton is in charge of the
arrangements.

The only downside to Graftons economy this week, other than the
increase in snowblower propellent to $2.25, is that the Simonson family
has decided that "their" BP gas station shouldn't handle E-85 gas any

the United States Postal Service knocked on our door and handed us a
whole box full of Florida Sunshine. What a fabulous surprise!! Thanks a

for this years firefighters calendar draw. That too, is a most gracious
gesture. As per your instructions, the ticket will be purchased in the

Norman (Nip) Lykken is burning another candle today (Sunday Dec. 3).
According to Billy D. Nip could heat a fairly good sized home with the
candles on his birthday cake. Happy Birthday Nip, from the gang at

cash along when you send you check for the firefighters drawing tickets.

We mentioned Irene's Beauty Shop the other day and it generated several
memories. The closest one to home came from Dale as he wrote. >>>
My cousin, Larry Collette, forwarded your latest articles about my
mother and her boys. The home, which also housed Irene's Beauty Shop,
was at 819 Hill Ave and is now occupied by the Social Security
office. My dad, Andy Trudeau also for a time owned Andy's Food Market
on the corner which later became Kings Grocery.
Lynn Thompson's mother worked for a time at Irene's as well as Carol
Moe. After retirement, from 43 yrs in the insurance business we moved
to Redding to be close to the grandkids.
Please include me on future articles.

building you mentioned that housed the SS office has since been
purchased by the West family and now is home to a couple insurance
offices, among other things. The SS office is in a new facility on the
west end of town.

I am saddened to report the passing of Howard Wendelbo. The Wendelbo's
have been friends of our family for a good number of years. Howard will
be missed by many in my family, especially Denise and Brad's twins Jade
& Ty and their younger brother Trevor.

of Grafton, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2006 at his home in
Grafton. Howard L. Wendelbo was born February 18, 1937 in Grafton, ND
the son of the late Carl and Lillian (Sondeland) Wendelbo. He worked
for Joe Anderson farms and the Boone Farms. In 1958 he was as a salesman
for Grafton Equipment. He later worked at Dryden Implement in Drayton
and Hart Machine in Grafton. He then went to work for Hanson's Auto and
Implement until retiring in 1999. Howard married Rosalee Coulthart on
October 5, 1958 at St. Thomas, ND. The couple made their home in
Grafton.
Howard enjoyed woodworking. He was an accomplished cabinet and furniture
maker. He loved fishing with his twin grandsons.
He is survived by his wife Rosalee; daughter Julie (Chad) Sundby, Park
River; grandsons: Dylan and Derek Sundby, Park River; brother Carl
(Polly) Wendelbo, Fargo. He was preceded in death by his parents, three
grandchildren, brother Leroy and sister Carol.
Funeral services will be Monday, December 4th at 11:00 A.M. at the Zion
English Lutheran Church, Grafton. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 PM
at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton with a prayer service at 7:00
PM. Interment will be at the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery.
The Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton is in charge of the
arrangements.

Here we are, just one day before the giant 12 kinds of
Chili-Rama-Chili-Feed at the Grafton Federated church. Not only was my
e-mail in-box busy Thursday. So to, I expect, were a lot of e-mail spell
checks. Ole Aasand called from the sunny south and said if there were
such a thing, as a Frederadian, he probably would be one. He also told
me that the Grafton Federated Church is made up of Methodist's and
Presbyterians. Evidently, when the old Methodist Episcopal Church, --
the one "kiddy-corner" across the street from the present Federated
church -- burned down. The two groups decided to "merge" (for want of a
better term). That all took place on October 7, 1931. I read that,
because I was still checking out the inseam of my dad's pants at the
time.
Anyway,.. it would seem there isn't any such thing as Frederadians.
However, I guess, there Presbyterians, and, the way it looks
Methodistian's.
Or so it seems to me.
Rev. Lee shared the following bit to further help clarify the topic.

The 1985 Grafton Spoilers North Dakota State High School Hockey
Champions are certainly entitled to be mentioned more than one day in
the Gazette. So, here's some more on day two.

Todd Janikowski, Danny Gaustad, Mylo Einarson, Todd Durand, Robby Wentz
and Eric Evans all got their names in the Grand Forks Herald that day.

Speaking of hockey. The Spoilers and Fargo North faced off in Fargo
Thursday evening. The Spoilers allowed Fargo to hit the showers with one
to many goals. The final score,... Fargo 6 Spoilers 5. I don't know much
about hockey, but it seemed to me that the Spoilers committed way to
many fouls,... in every inning. The game may have looked different in
person, but over the radio, It sounded like "our" boys could stand a
short course in anger management.

I am pleased to report the donkey that "strayed" away from the Grafton
Federated Church Manger scene in Leistikow Park, has returned. In plenty
of time, I might add, to attend the 12 different kinds of
Chili-Rama-Cook-off and Chicken Noodle soup dinner feed at the Federated
Church this Saturday, Dec 2 from 11 to 4. AND a delicious Bake Sale.
ONLY $5.00 per person or $15.00 for the whole family. Bring the whole
family, along your "Sweet tooth"...
The Federated Women In Missions will be having the bake/food sale.

And,... so there I was, in the Gazette Corporate library thinking. If
the folks that belong to the Grafton Lutheran Church are referred to as
Lutherans, And, the folks that attend the Catholic Church are Catholics.
Are the folks that attend the Federated Church referred to as
Frederadians? Maybe I should quit spending so much time in the
"library". Then again, maybe someone out there can supply us with a
"proper" answer.

got the first one right. It was Paul Thompson (31).
Keith Lindenberg was talking about Danny Gaustad. It was all in the
Sunday 1985 Grand Forks Herald writeup after the Grafton Spoilers won
the State Hockey Tournament.
I find that particular Herald Sports section interesting. As usual,
and probably rightfully so. The Herald "tends" to favor the Grand Forks
Teams. I remember reading that sports section (in 85) and thinking it
"seems" biased, although I did think it might not sound quite so bad in
a few years. I was wrong, I still don't like the way "it reads".
On the bright side, Kevin Fee's the Grafton Spoils Minot article was as
good as one could hope for. After all, Grafton did win the North Dakota
State High School Hockey Championship.
Kevin Fee's column titled, Gaustad's happy he stuck around, article was
OK and for the purposes of documentation and history isn't to bad.
Evidently Danny Gaustad did contemplate quitting because he wasn't
getting much ice time, and, according to the article, was getting a
little tired of hockey anyway.
Unfortunately, the almost one third of a page column by Michele Cook
(page 5 a Feb. 24 1985) Headlined in giant bold print. GF parents allege
Grafton Violation, was a real HOOVER, if you know what I mean. I
believed at that time, as I do today. That kind of article, containing
several unfounded charges and innuendoes had on place in the same
edition of the Grand Forks as the Announcement of the New North Dakota
State High School Hockey Champions.
Or so it seems to me.

I have received several questions, over the past few days, regarding
the status of or niece Jillian Demester. This morning I received an
update from her mother Val. She wrote: >>>

I believe I've become an addict! To the Gazette that is. I look
forward to it everyday.
I wanted to send you (and everyone) a quick update on Jillian. We
recently had a follow-up visit in St. Paul at Gillette with Jillian's
rehab doctor and therapist. Everything is going great and continuing
to improve everyday.
I often have to catch my breath when I stop to think about the whole
situation and that it was only 4 months ago, I was putting everything I
have into God's hands. Physically, Jillian is continuing to gain
muscle control and strength which is very important to supporting your
bones. She is done with outpatient physical therapy but we continue
our own at home and she enjoys going to the gym with her friends.
That has helped tremendously! They can push her a bit harder than I
can. Our goal is to be at 90% mobility by her next appt. in
February. I know she will do it. The healing process for her head
injury is also improving. She has a few areas that need a little more

rehab. We always called Jillian his little shadow. And for those
of you who had the opportunity to meet him, we called him "Little
Jake". He was an absolutely amazing young man who never stopped and
was the most grateful and respectful person ever. It was fun to talk to
him everyday and was a great inspiration to Jillian. Unfortunately, he
had a major set back and was back in the hospital. This time it is a
much darker and slower recovery. It broke my heart and I know it hit
home for Jillian to not only appreciate how lucky she is but it opened
her eyes to how quickly everything can change and so unexpectedly.
Sometimes even the worst times in our lives are major stepping stones
and most often the unforgettable moments. Please keep them in your
prayers, and all the children and families there.
Jillian will go back to Mpls. in Dec. for an orthopedic checkup and back
to St. Paul in Feb. for a full rehab followup. If things continue to
improve as they are, I expect nothing but rave results. Thank

I have received several questions, over the past few days, regarding
the status of or niece Jillian Demester. This morning I received an
update from her mother Val. She wrote: >>>

I believe I've become an addict! To the Gazette that is. I look
forward to it everyday.
I wanted to send you (and everyone) a quick update on Jillian. We
recently had a follow-up visit in St. Paul at Gillette with Jillian's
rehab doctor and therapist. Everything is going great and continuing
to improve everyday.
I often have to catch my breath when I stop to think about the whole
situation and that it was only 4 months ago, I was putting everything I
have into God's hands. Physically, Jillian is continuing to gain
muscle control and strength which is very important to supporting your
bones. She is done with outpatient physical therapy but we continue
our own at home and she enjoys going to the gym with her friends.
That has helped tremendously! They can push her a bit harder than I
can. Our goal is to be at 90% mobility by her next appt. in
February. I know she will do it. The healing process for her head
injury is also improving. She has a few areas that need a little more
work but then, don't we all?? (jk) Our goals are to work on math

As I entered Leistikow Park Monday afternoon, I did so, full of
anticipation and enthusiasm. If all had went as planned, Monday should
have been the day when Leistikow Park would be lit up by a myriad of
holiday lights and decorations.
It is a fact that there is a significant number of decorations in
Leistikow Park. As a matter of fact, a drive thru Graftons Leistikow
Park is well worth the trip.
Unfortunately several displays, especially those representing local
municipal authorities, were still lying flat on the ground, others,
though standing remained dark, still others had missing lights. Even the
flag pole is lit, without a flag.
There are some displays in the park that required untold hours of
preparation and set up. Many have been functioning for several days. I
find it somewhat irresponsible that the entity that is promoting the
Spirit of the Season "Display Of Lights" in Leistikow appears to be so
lackadaisical in it's own participation in the project.
And, I must admit, I am thoroughly disheartened that I can't find that
wonderful "giant diamond" anywhere in the park.

of me since I started as a peanut."
Who then,.... was Keith Lindenberg speaking of, when he said he was
happy he decided to stay " because he's got a good sense of humor, and
it's fun having him in the locker room."

IMPORTANT - UPCOMING - EVENT
The North Dakota Pottery Collectors Society is coming to Grafton to
give the public a Pottery Road Show, on Sunday, December 3, @ 2PM at the
Heritage Village, Hwy 17 West. They will have a time set for
questions and also appraisals if anyone would want to bring along some
of their pottery pieces to have appraised. They will show
pottery from 8 different sources of our states pottery. This sounds
like it could be a very interesting time so everyone is encouraged to
come for the show. There will be refreshments by the Carnegie Regional
Library and The Walsh County Historical Society who are sponsoring this
program.
We hope to see you there.

It sounds to me like this coming Sunday could be an interesting
afternoon.
Everyone can attend the Chili feed at the Federated Church on Saturday
the 2nd. They can eat a pot full of chili then they can take their pots
to Heritage Village on Sunday and find out what they're worth.
Now don't that make for a knee slappin' weekend? It sure does to me.

Every once in awhile I get notes from the newsfromgrafton.com web
site. I am surprised how many folks allow themselves to be pestered, in
one form or another with the babble I call the Gazette.
Please keep in mind, the real value of the Gazette, for me at least, is
the exchange of memories, ideas and thought. Keep in mind also, that it
requires the input of everyone if it is to continue to realize it's full
potential.
"Just knowing someone is out there, and knowing someone cares, is only

The weekend, in Shivercity, was relatively uneventful. Of course,
relatively,.. is a relative term, right?
I'll try explain. Friday evening, Larry D. (the LD in John Aasand's
earlier note) started displaying the kind of signs that he should seek
the help and opinion of the medical profession.
Hence, he, and we, once again had the opportunity to experience the
value, efficiency and proficiency of "our" Valley Ambulance and Rescue
team. We also had the opportunity to experience, first hand, the
significant value of Graftons Unity Medical Center. Within a few short
minutes from the time the 911 call was made, my brother-in-law, was in
Unity Hospital. Brought there by our extremely proficient ambulance and
rescue team. The Unity Hospital Staff is to be commended as well for
their timely services, as is Dr. Hafeez.
After initial examination, the Unity staff prepared him for the ride to
Altru Hospital in Grand Forks. There, with the benefit of an even larger
staff, and more available resources, Larry was admitted for additional
evaluation. He was released from Altru Sunday and will return Monday for
some additional tests. So far, at least, the initial suppositions
supplied by the Unity Staff has carried thru at Altru.
As we sat in the waiting room of Unity Hospital hoping for the best. I
wondered. What might have happened had Unity Medical Center not been
there. I thought how wonderful it is that we have so many, truely
professional folks, right here in Grafton, within seconds to evaluate,
stabilize if need be and prepare for the forty five mile trip to Altru
Hospital in Grand Forks.
Make no mistake about it, the Altru Hospital facility in Grand Forks,
is a terrific medical center, on a grand scale. At this point, we
continue to believe everything is, or certainly will be okay. To that
end, (pardon the pun) I have even offered to help administer, the very
often overlooked, "generally therapeutic" enema. Should it be deemed
necessary. Because, after all, we are all hoping everything will in
fact, come out,... in the end.

Saturday evening we took a short drive to Cavalier to enjoy their
annual Santa Claus Parade. Pat and I rode along with Brad and Denise,
Jade & Ty, and Trevor. We left a bit early so we could get a good seat.
As we arrived at Cavalier from the south we could see the staging area.
Already I could tell it would be a wonderful parade. As we pulled in the
hardware store parking lot, I noticed a large charter bus going around
the corner and wondered, who that might be.
As we sat there, cars started filling up all available parking spaces,
and, I should add, being careful not to block the view of others. As I
looked across the street I noticed Gregory Ford and was reminded that
they began their car business experience in Grafton.
Next, I noticed a lady going from car to car with two large white
pitchers in her arms. Whats that all about, I wondered. Within minutes,
I found out. She stopped by asking if we would like some apple cider.
Now that, I thought, was a pretty neat touch and the cider was super too
I might add. Shortly before the parade was to start, Brad, Denise and
grandma took to kids out by the curb, hoping for a better view, and, of
course a better chance for the little tykes to catch candy. Anyway,
within a few minutes the thought of a warm car sounded pretty good,
and,... I had a car full of company again.
I could see the flashing lights coming and the parade was starting. The
American flag lead the parade. Then, I noticed a beautiful team of
horses pulling a sleigh. The harnesses were all lit up as was the sleigh
(not a wagon) and, in it of course, was the gentleman of the hour,
Santa.
Then, as other units passed by, a wonderful lady standing by the curb
gathered some of the candy and brought it to our car for the kids. Now
that, I thought, was local citizenship to the tenth degree.
I'm not sure how many entries there were. It certainly appeared to us,
as though every business in Cavalier was represented in some way. Then I
realized what the charter bus was doing in town. It was carrying
Canadian members of a bag pipe band. Next to a local high school band,
and the Shriners organization, a good bag pipe band makes my adam's
apple twitch about as much as anything. I thought the 29 model a decked
out with lights was another "show stopper".
When the parade was over, we drove down the "innercity" streets and it
wasn't surprising to see them, and, the sidewalks packed with people.
The city of Cavalier can be very proud of their annual Santa Claus
Parade. They certainly proved to everyone there. Not only do they want
"our" business, they appreciate it, AND, just as important, that they
are willing to put a lot of extra effort into proving it.
My sincere gratitude goes out to the community of Cavalier and all of
those responsible for a very enjoyable evening.
They have learned a few secrets that other small communities could use.
With a little luck, maybe they would be willing to share them. Or so it
seems to me.

team. We also had the opportunity to experience, first hand, the
significant value of Graftons Unity Medical Center. Within a few short
minutes from the time the 911 call was made, my brother-in-law, was in
Unity Hospital. Brought there by our extremely proficient ambulance and
rescue team. The Unity Hospital Staff is to be commended as well for
their timely services, as is Dr. Hafeez.
After initial examination, the Unity staff prepared him for the ride to
Altru Hospital in Grand Forks. There, with the benefit of an even larger
staff, and more available resources, Larry was admitted for additional
evaluation. He was released from Altru Sunday and will return Monday for
some additional tests. So far, at least, the initial suppositions
supplied by the Unity Staff has carried thru at Altru.
As we sat in the waiting room of Unity Hospital hoping for the best. I
wondered. What might have happened had Unity Medical Center not been
there. I thought how wonderful it is that we have so many, truely
professional folks, right here in Grafton, within seconds to evaluate,
stabilize if need be and prepare for the forty five mile trip to Altru
Hospital in Grand Forks.
Make no mistake about it, the Altru Hospital facility in Grand Forks,
is a terrific medical center, on a grand scale. At this point, we
continue to believe everything is, or certainly will be okay. To that
end, (pardon the pun) I have even offered to help administer, the very
often overlooked, "generally therapeutic" enema. Should it be deemed
necessary. Because, after all, we are all hoping everything will in
fact, come out,... in the end.

Saturday evening we took a short drive to Cavalier to enjoy their
annual Santa Claus Parade. Pat and I rode along with Brad and Denise,
Jade & Ty, and Trevor. We left a bit early so we could get a good seat.
As we arrived at Cavalier from the south we could see the staging area.
Already I could tell it would be a wonderful parade. As we pulled in the
hardware store parking lot, I noticed a large charter bus going around
the corner and wondered, who that might be.
As we sat there, cars started filling up all available parking spaces,
and, I should add, being careful not to block the view of others. As I
looked across the street I noticed Gregory Ford and was reminded that
they began their car business experience in Grafton.
Next, I noticed a lady going from car to car with two large white
pitchers in her arms. Whats that all about, I wondered. Within minutes,
I found out. She stopped by asking if we would like some apple cider.
Now that, I thought, was a pretty neat touch and the cider was super too
I might add. Shortly before the parade was to start, Brad, Denise and
grandma took to kids out by the curb, hoping for a better view, and, of
course a better chance for the little tykes to catch candy. Anyway,
within a few minutes the thought of a warm car sounded pretty good,
and,... I had a car full of company again.
I could see the flashing lights coming and the parade was starting. The
American flag lead the parade. Then, I noticed a beautiful team of
horses pulling a sleigh. The harnesses were all lit up as was the sleigh
(not a wagon) and, in it of course, was the gentleman of the hour,
Santa.
Then, as other units passed by, a wonderful lady standing by the curb
gathered some of the candy and brought it to our car for the kids. Now
that, I thought, was local citizenship to the tenth degree.
I'm not sure how many entries there were. It certainly appeared to us,
as though every business in Cavalier was represented in some way. Then I
realized what the charter bus was doing in town. It was carrying
Canadian members of a bag pipe band. Next to a local high school band,
and the Shriners organization, a good bag pipe band makes my adam's
apple twitch about as much as anything. I thought the 29 model a decked
out with lights was another "show stopper".
When the parade was over, we drove down the "innercity" streets and it
wasn't surprising to see them, and, the sidewalks packed with people.
The city of Cavalier can be very proud of their annual Santa Claus
Parade. They certainly proved to everyone there. Not only do they want
"our" business, they appreciate it, AND, just as important, that they
are willing to put a lot of extra effort into proving it.
My sincere gratitude goes out to the community of Cavalier and all of
those responsible for a very enjoyable evening.
They have learned a few secrets that other small communities could use.
With a little luck, maybe they would be willing to share them. Or so it
seems to me.

This is expected to be the busiest business day (Friday) of the year
for retailers all across the country. Grafton, it seems is right in
there with the big boys from down south. Early this morning several
people were actually sitting in their cars outside one of Graftons
largest discount store waiting for them to open up. Although most of
those folks were waiting for the boss to come and unlock the doors so
they could go to work, I'm pretty sure the folks in that 49 Studebaker
pickup truck was hoping for a discount on antifreeze and motor oil.
Even Granny's opened earlier than usual this morning. Later I stopped
in at our downtown hardware store for a new power source for my
calculator and didn't have to stand in line hardly at all to checkout.

Ever wonder where the river called "Park" got it's name? I sure have.
Now, for the rest of the story.
According to one historian, in 1800, Capt. Henry's Brigade sailed into
it's waters coming from the fur camp on the Assiniboine. A Sioux
uprising caused Capt. Henry to halt where the Park and Red rivers
converge. There, on Sept. 9 1800, he established winter quarters. The
building consisted of a stockade, dwelling house, storehouse and shop,
all made of oak for which 3,114 pieces of timber were used.
The river was called the Park because the Assiniboine Indians made a
park or pond there for buffalo, herding them in from all points and then
they slaughtered them in great numbers. The "Park" river post was
abandoned May 4, 1801. Leaving little behind but the abandoned outpost
and the river named Park.
Romur has it, the Sioux Indians stopped by "the park" shortly after and
carved into logs left behind, "Someday, rich white man will build giant
brick tee-pee, fill it with ice and beautiful pictures of our ancestors
and it will become the new land of the "Fighting Sioux".
The same rumor has it, that Capt. Henry will (and ultimately did)
someday have a large mechanical toilet built in his honor on the spot
where many buffaloes dropped dung. The spot the indians named a park.
And, so it came to passed,... it seems to me.

spanking. Today, Julie is celebrating the anniversary of that birth. I'm
guessing that spanking, 22,617,338 minutes ago was the last one. One
every 15,706 days is all a good girl really needs. Right Julie?
Your in good company Julie. Dale Carnegie would be celebrating his
birthday today to, except his first spanking was back in 1888.

they can do the same to their families this afternoon.

Rev. Lee's mention of Bus and ambulance rules the other day gave
Cindy reason to share the following. >>>

This is in regards to bus driving. I too drive bus in Ohio.
The same rules apply here. If you see our yellow lights, we are
"warning" you that we will be stopping. That does NOT mean give it the
gas. Sometimes a child is running late and will run across the street to
get to my bus without checking traffic. Get the picture?? It is very
scarey for us sometimes. The driver is worried about getting past us and
the child is worried about missing the bus. What is 30 seconds of wait
time compared to a life? When our reds are on, that is a DEFINITE stop.
Or so it seems to me! You would be amazed at how many people run our
lights in a weeks time. How does one miss this big yellow thing in the
road with flashing lights? As the holidays approach, please be extra
cautious, our kids minds are on other things at this time of year.

sister. Irene was married to Andy Trudeau and they had 4 boys. After
Andy died Irene married Bill Janousek. What a guy!
I was fortunate to have played with the Grafton Parade Band
when we went to the Rose Bowl and marched in the TOR (Tournament of
Roses) parade. Also went to the Orange Bowl in Miami. Jack Thanks for
the memories Jack. For the life of me I can't remember where Irene's
Beauty Shop was. I do remember Irene though, as I used to "run around"
once in awhile, with a couple of her boys.
Besides that, back then it wasn't fashionable for young boys to
get their hair cut at a beauty shop. AND, by the time it was, my hair
color had already started changing to caucasian. I'll bet someone out
there remembers Irene's shop and where it was located.

Happy Turkey day!
We are invited to the machine shed.......farmer friends of ours have TG
potluck dinner for around 50 relatives and friends. Have done this a
couple of years and it is great........they cover up the tools, benches,
stuff with sheets...put up long church tables and chairs and put on
paper table clothes, etc. and serve up a storm. Always great food and
neat fellowship.

fortunate to spend TG at our oldest daughters farm, together with most
of our family.

our visit to the Fire Hall Monday. I did think about the Larson fire,
all the pictures reminded of photographer Steve Larson, but since we
weren't home at the time of the fire I thought I would leave it's

I felt compelled to add a couple of comments about 'our
firefighters' after reading the Shivercity Gazette 11-22 Edition. I
read, with a lump in my throat, how these fine members of our community
thanked Pat and you for all the support you give them in the Gazette.
You are very deserving. I read on, with an even bigger lump in my
throat, how you, in turn, praised them for their years of commitment and
outstanding efforts. They, also, are very deserving. As many of you
know, we have our own reasons for being so thankful for this group of
dedicated and hard working volunteers. It's been over 4 years since
the fire department was called on to respond to a fire at our home, in
the middle of the night, while we were away on vacation. We've been
told by many, that while it looked very grim, these amazing men fought
even harder and were able to save a good portion of our home and our
precious belongings. Most of what we lost could be replaced....most
of what couldn't have been replaced was saved. It was due to their
heroic efforts that our lives were able to get back to normal after the
rebuilding process. (By the way, we had to fight a long and very
difficult battle to get our insurance company to allow us to hire local
people to rebuild our home....but that's another story that I won't
dwell on during this time of thanks.) So on this Thanksgiving Day, we
will say a special prayer for each of Grafton's Volunteer Firefighters
and their families. They are truly an invaluable asset to our
community.

The first thing we noticed yesterday morning as we drove down main
street,.... was Santa Claus, riding in a hi-lift bucket, putting up
holiday decorations. This will be "our" first year using giant
snowflakes to decorate mainstreets light poles. So far, those snowflakes
are the only sign of snow on main street. Then, we noticed someone
coming down Hill Avenue on a motorcycle. After all, it is the 21 of
November you know. As a matter of fact, it was so nice yesterday, that
the guy riding the motorcycle stopped in at Generations (formerly the
Eagles Club) for a "cool one" or two, or more. The fact is, it was so
nice yesterday that several folks were out mowing their lawns, in short
sleeve shirts.
As a matter of fact, and, you might not believe this one, it was so
nice out, there was even a few bankers "working" in the park putting up
their holiday display.

Speaking of the park. The number of displays continues to grow. So far
I don't see the giant diamond from Golden Harvest Jewelry, but I'm sure
it'll show up soon. Right Jeff?

Gary - My children LOVE Wally's display. I can see why he'd be
tempted to give up, given the vandalism, but we hope he doesn't.

Re: Park decorations. If "cousin Wally" could find a way to provide some
kind of private security in the park, perhaps the community would
benefit 2 ways : nicer yet displays from those who have lost thru
vandalism, not only their displays, but the $$ they have put out for the
enjoyment of all of the people; AND, some vandals spending their
holidays in the county hotel. Bev and I enjoyed those displays when we
were home during the Holidays and I hope they continue. Perhaps it would
be easier to get contributions from other former and present Graftonites
to hire security. (count me in). By the way Wally has done one heck of a
lot for Grafton and deserves high accolades from all of us and in
reality should not be expected to foot the bill.

Pat and I would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to
the members of the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department.
Now,... for the rest of the story.
Pat & I received a letter the other day from our local Fire Department.
It said, in part.
In recognition of all you have done for the Fire Department calendar
draw, we would like to have you as our guests at our November dinner
meeting. It's our way of saying - as the letter continued - Thank You to
both of you.
As we read that letter, we thought, how wonderful it was that they
would do such a thing, for us. Volunteer Firefighters have always
occupied a very special place in our hearts. Even more so now as our son
Jeff is a member of Grafton's Volunteer Firefighting unit.
As Pat and I started up the City Hall steps to the meeting room. I felt
myself shaking more than normal. With each step, I couldn't help
thinking of so times many our firefighters risked their lives, and their
livelihoods for the rest of us.
The Zelda complex, just across the street struck me first. Then, I
remembered the Hvidsten fire. I thought of the night the Basell hotel
burned down taking with it, the law offices of Burke Hodney and Burke,
as well as Reds News & Sports. I was thinking of the fire at Church
Chevrolet about the same time we reached the top of the stairs and just
then, I could smell freshly prepared turkey from the meeting room. The
smell of food reminded me of the fire at Wally's Supermarket several
years ago. Even more ironic than that, the turkey I was smelling, had
just been prepared, for us, by Wally's.
As we entered the meeting room, I noticed the display of early fire
nozzles on the east wall. Although interesting, the things that really
drew my attention, were the pictures on the walls. Dozens of them,
individual pictures as well as group pictures.
Hugo Kutz's pictures was the first to catch my eye. Then came Bob Barr
(the blacksmith) Norbert Hanson was up there as was Herman O'Connell and
Wally DeSautel. I couldn't miss Elvon Mattson in a group picture wearing
his dark glasses.
Then it was time to eat, and, eat we did. The turkey dinner and all the
trimmings was super. While eating I thought much about the group of
people I was "breaking bread" with. I also couldn't help looking at more
of the pictures, and, how many of those men I could actually remember.
Chuck Johnston, Jim Sauer Don Loos and Charlie Matcha all brought back
interesting memories. Doug Ganyo, Bill Janousek and Leroy Stroh were up
there too. And so many many more.
As we finished our meal and prepared for the meeting. I found myself
struggling to manage the emotional high. Leroy Nelson said grace, asking
God for his direction and thanking him for his guidance. They expressed
their appreciation to Pat and me, then everyone stood up and the room
erupted with applause. I struggled for air and my throat tightened up
and something in nature seemed to make my eyes and nose both water at
the same time.
There they were, a whole room full of the finest Firefighters anywhere
on earth. Giving us a standing ovation. We will never forget that
evening. Memories are wonderful, and this will be one of the best. We
thank them so very very much.

Have I mentioned that the Grafton Area Volunteer Firefighters will once
again be selling calendar draw tickets? Did I say they are still only
twenty dollars each, and, that the money will go towards helping one of
the best darn Firefighting units anywhere be as good as they can be?
Have I mentioned that "if" you let me know, I'd be happy to be sure you
get as many as you want? If not, I probably will be doing that real

Several more displays were set up in Leistikow park Monday. I noticed
that Santa is back under the shower again this year. It looks great

If I remember right, Orpha & Herbert Bertsch came to Grafton in 1963.
Their "mission", for want of a better term, was to hone and sharpen the
minds of the youth in our community. I'm sure anyone that knows the
Bertsch's would agree. Their mission was accomplished. Unfortunately,
Monday morning, as Herb walked by our table at Granny's, as he's done,
almost daily, for the past several years. He stopped, and, with a tear
in his eye said, "It looks like we are going to be moving to Jamestown."
It seems, according to Herb, his nephews want Orpha and Herb closer to
them in Jamestown.
The Bertsch's have been our neighbors for many years. We'll be saddened
to see them go. If that must be, we can only wish them the very best in
their new home and adventure.

It seems Rita has come up with a reason for all the ladies in town last
Saturday.

booth and participated in The Ultimate Girls Day out fashion show. We
worked very hard to entertain them. We showed them many fashion and gift

that ladies love to come to Grafton to shop, to be entertained and they
know they will receive friendly service. Rita Amiot <<< Thanks a million
for caring and sharing Rita. I would most certainly agree, there
definitely were lots of ladies in town Saturday. You Rita, and we, have
much to be proud of in the Squire Shop. We have much to be proud of in
Grafton,...period.
Unfortunately, one day, does not a prosperous year make. Every business
in Grafton, should, and must, follow your lead and hope for the same
results.
Or so it seems to me.

The Federated Church Chili Feed brought the following. >>>
Concerning the Chili Cook Off:
Pastor Lee of the Federated Church announced in church on Sunday that
he too was not aware there were 12 different kinds of chili, but that he
welcomes them,... with a Rolaids concession stand. :) <<< It might not
hurt to have some pepto-bizmol in that stand as well.

Speaking of Pastor Lee. He wanted to share the following. >>> My wife
and I were with friends the other evening for supper and the subject
came up of the rules and regulations for passing stopped school busses
and what to do if you see an ambulance with red lights flashing.
Since I drive a school bus it's amazed me how many do not know what to
do if they see a stopped school bus. If the bus is stopped but no
overhead red lights are flashing then it's alright to proceed. If the
school bus is flashing overhead yellow lights then you can be sure that
bus is preparing to stop. If the bus is stopped and the overhead red
lights are flashing and the side stop sign is extended then it is
required by law that the bus not be passed by any vehicle from either
direction. The bus remains stopped with overhead lights flashing and
side stop sign extended until the passenger is safely sitting in their
seat. If a bus driver observes a car passing a stopped school bus
with red lights flashing and side stop sign extended, that bus driver is
required to take the license plate information and turn that information
over to the highway patrol. Some of the bus drivers make special
notation of the address where the bus was illegally passed, make
and color of vehicle, if the driver is male or female, and which way the
bus was headed to indicate if the car passed from behind the bus or in
front. I believe the minimum fine for passing a stopped school bus is
$50 plus 6 points off your license. If you pass a stopped school bus
with red lights flashing and stop sign extended and you see the driver
looking at your license plate and writing you can be sure you'll have a
visit from a highway patrolman within the month if not that day.
When an ambulance is coming up behind you or approaching you with red
lights flashing then vehicles are to pull over and stop. I've been a
member of several ambulance crews around the state and have observed
people refusing to pull over or to give the ambulance the right of
way. What I would do when I was driving and something like this
happened was to radio in the license plate number to the local
sheriffs department or highway patrol. I would hope that if one of my
loved ones were in the back of that ambulance in need of emergency
medical help that the roadway would be made clear to have that ambulance
safely and quickly arrive at the medical facility.
Hope this helps with some of the questions some may have about stopping
for school busses and ambulance services.

frozen flat trees while guessing how the branches would look once they
thawed. All the while I was jumping up and down trying to keep my feet
from freezing and rubbing cold fingers against even colder cheeks. There
were no early decorations at our home. In deference to Rosanne's special
day, we waited until after her December 13 birthday before starting. By
then the tree had stood in a bucket of water long enough that we could
appreciate (or not) the result of our careful selection. If we had
misjudged, the bad side went against the wall; if we had seriously
misjudged, more decorations filled the voids. Remembering how cold North
Dakota can be in December, I can appreciate taking advantage of the
current nice weather to get the job done early! Joy V. Bliss,
