Todays Gazette goes out to all of the hearts and souls of all those
fighting the ravages of flood in the Red River Valley.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. most stuff.
-----------------------
With the local river reading presently below any normal flood concern,
the remnants of higher levels and the "fight" to control the Park River
still remain very evident.
The dikes, both clay and sand, are the most obvious as they stand ready
should another crest return. The pile of sand and the bagging machine in
the city hall parking lot is another reminder of the "fight" local
volunteers encountered. The sandbags surrounding homes and property on
Graftons north end also give reason for humility and gratitude. First
for the efforts of our city management and the multitude of volunteers
that held Mother Natures rath at bay. Even the tattered flag flying over
the Bremer Bank gives evidence that our community has been experiencing
something other than calm winds and weather.
With the Park River receding and the possibility of spring on our
horizon. Let us turn our energies and concerns towards our neighbors
along "the big river to the east" and offer them all of the resources we
can possibly muster.
--------------------------------
Point to ponder: If the President of the United States can fire a
president of a major United States Corporation, concur that union
elections "must" be open to the union leadership and believes 8,000
earmaks qualifies as "transparent".
How long can it be before the Statue of Liberty will be standing over
a country the likes of which it came?
--------------------------------
I received the following message very early last Friday. For reasons
to numerous to mention, I haven't sent out a Gazette since receiving it.
Hence, with the premise that "it's better late than never", Wally shared
the following thoughts. >>> Hi Gary, I just heard a news release
at 11 pm that patients are being evacuated from Merit Care Hospital in
Fargo. My Granddaughter is involved in moving patients from two large
rest homes in Fargo. This my friend is the true reality of what happens
when you vote down flood control.
I saw my first flood 76 years ago in Grafton. I have heard
every lame reason why we should not have dikes, a by pass or some kind
of flood control. We have paid for it many, many times over.
If it had passed on the last vote it is almost a sure bet we would
not have had our mayor and all his staff working day and night under the
worst conditions we have ever had to work work under. Even so they have
done a super job.
My mothers house was hit by the rush of water in 1950. It
pushed in the basement wall and the house cracked in half. There was no
Government help in those days. We dug out the basement with a team of
horses and a scraper. Then again In 1979 we worked til 2 am with plastic
and sand bags and saved it.
The point I'm trying to make is it doe not have to be this way. Good
flood protection ill take care of it. Take a look at Grand Forks, Roseau
or Warren and the list goes on and on.
I just heard on television that Fargo will pass an all time high
for the river before morning and it's possible that Grand Forks could
pass 1997 as well.GRAND FORKS WILL PASS 1997. Who is to say it won't
happen to us this year.... or next. Again I say, I have seen every flood
since 1933. I was 5 years old then and I remember every one.
Gary, I just don't think it os fair to the people who take
the job as Mayor to drop floods in their laps. WE WILL NEVER GROW UNTIL
THIS IS CORRECTED.
A man called me and said that his flood insurance is
$800.00. Another young man, working at the dike, said his flood
insurance was $1600.00. I got a bid on my home and it would have been
$2280.00 a year. I bought a sand bagger instead. All of this flood
insurance money would be spendable money if we were out of the flood
zone.
To change this is up to the people of Grafton. Grafton voted it down
once and it might be hard to ask for money from Uncle Sam in the future
as we had our chance for help.
Thanks for your efforts on keeping us informed. Wally <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Wally. As I have said in the
past. "floods are Mother Natures method of water boarding". The best
time to take a vote on flood protection is a few seconds "before" the
water goes over the nose.
Or so it seems to me.

March 27, 2009 - Friday

Raumin Gone was declared "officially" over Thursday morning when Jerry
entered Granny's for breakfast.
--------------------------
The current temperature is 9 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 19/13
Normal H/L temp for this date is 40/22
It was 82 degrees on this date in 1946
"Unofficially" by early Friday morning the river level at Grafton has
dropped by approximately 2 feet. If that trend continues we might expect
our level to be around 12.5 feet or less by noon Friday.

=========================
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
----------------------------
Most folks involved with the Grafton area flood situation agree that
our crest was reached sometime Tuesday. Of course we have received 4 to
6 inches of snow since then,... that's the bad news side, however,
temperatures have been much colder than normal since then. So.... that's
the good news part of the story.
The dikes along the Park River certainly are doing what they were built
to do, which is keep the river out of town. Unfortunately, those dikes
will also keep all of the recent snowmelt water IN.
Although the threat of a serious flood in Grafton was very real and
gave many serious cause for concern, and, given the recent weather
condition, coupled with a less than favorable future forecast. I suppose
the possibility of a significant flood still exists. I, on the other
hand, am going to continue to believe the citizens of Grafton faced
Mother Natures rath and defeated it.
That is not to say there remains much more to be vigilant about.
Dealing with the water inside the dike, will cause many residents
additional sleepless nights. And, of course, should we be lucky enough
to actually be on the downside of the 2009 spring flood season. We
mustn't forget that the "cleanup" process will also require the
diligence of many.
Many folks, from all over the country, have offered their thoughts and
prayers, as have The Reverends Yeager.
They wrote: >>>
Hi Gary! Just wanted to let you know that both my church and
Greg's down here in North Carolina are keeping Grafton and all of ND in
our prayers. Greg wanted to load up the church van and drive up there
but he'd never make it in time and probably not be able to get across
the Red River. Soo we are praying that God redirects all that water
where it can do some good and benefit the earth rather than disrupt
lives and businesses. Blessings and prayers,
Pastor Carol Yeager <<<<

opinion, gives folks the directions they need to help ourselves.

Todays Gazette comes to you chilled by the gentle breezes blowing over
several inches of a early spring snowstorm.

==========================
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
---------------------------
Even though the river reading in Grafton has fallen approximately a
foot since Tuesday evening. We must not become complacent. I believe
much, if not all, of the drop can be attributed to cold the temperature
that, in turn, slowed down normal runoff.
Assuming we don't receive a lot more moisture I must believe the
earlier crest prediction may well be reduced. Obviously I certainly hope
my rational is correct. Unfortunately, it may just be wishful thinking.
One thing is for certain. When the sun returns to the Red River Valley
and the temperature returns to more normal levels. Time and Mother
Nature will dictate the outcome.
Anyway,.. for the next day or two, Mother Nature has given local flood
volunteers a well earned break. To that, Mayor Burianek has added the
following thoughts. Todd said. >>>>>
That doesn't mean we are relaxing or letting our guard down as we know
Mother Nature has a way of changing her mind but it does mean that after
a week of this battle I finally feel that I can exhale.
The next issue will be water collecting in the streets from the snow
melt. As you know, we've closed storm sewer valves in order to prevent
overflow onto the streets, but now the melting snow will collect because
it won't be carried to the river. We will be judiciously pumping the
water off of all streets.
Again, I offer a big thank you to all who helped so far in this
effort. It is greatly appreciated.
TB <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Todd. It is true
that the recent inclement weather has given most of our flood volunteers
a short reprieve. It has significantly increased the level of stress and
placed a heightened physical demand on the members of our community that
rely on our city for a living.
The old adage, "damned if you do, and damned if you don't" certainly
comes to mind at times like these. Fortunately, our communities
employees have been working their butts off to build a dam that will
minimize our loss to the ravages of flood waters.
------------------------------
The ongoing story of Grafton's encounter with with the ravages of
flood is nationwide. Recent comments from Rick Kettells, Missouri,
Marjie from Florida, Kathee from Parkers Prairie shared their thoughts.
Today Keith Mohagen, California and Bill Shininger, one of our Ohio Fox

community with whom we've built a special friendship over the past

I read with interest and pride, about Graftons pending
flood, and the peoples attitude in handling it by helping each other.
Kudos to Mayor Todd Burianek and his staff. I remembered the
past floods back to the 1950's - the National Guard rescuing people
with "Ducks", Gordy Stark taking a canoe to work and tying it
up in front of "Fishes 5 & 10"; and myself delivering the Grand
Forks Herald in hip boots. And no FEMA in sight! I can only hope that
the people of Louisiana see this!
keep up the good work - Keith <<<<<
Thanks a million Keith. I honestly can't speak about the folks in
Louisiana. I can however, assure you of one thing. The folks around here
are really working their heart out and they are doing it with one
thought in mind. They simply want to help their neighbors. Or so it
seems to me.

VOLUNTEER: Webster describes a volunteer as; one who choses freely to
do something.
I sometimes wonder, during times like these, if Websters definition
doesn't fall a bit short of the actual fact. For instance I would
suggest that Webster describe volunteers as; those people who choose to
do, for free, wonderful things that some folks are unable to do by
themselves.
++++++
Speaking of wonderful people, volunteers and spring flooding. Mayor
Todd Burianek sent the latest update in that regard. >>>> ~~~ Subject:
Flood Update 3/25 ~~~
Last night Mother Nature threw her best at the people of Grafton and the
people responded in resounding fashion.
One of the things about Floods is that the NWS can tell you what the
flood level is in general, but with ice jams, certain areas may be much
higher/lower than that. North of Doug and Ann McCann's the river was at
a level that was likely higher than in 1997. After a team of sandbaggers
secured the area around John Klava's we moved over to McCann's to add
sandbags there.
Last night over 150 people gave their time to Grafton. Old, young,
City residents and non-residents alike stood side-by-side to fight the
good fight. When it was all finished after midnight, a lot of tired
people finally were able to go home but even then, in bitter winds, I
heard not one complaint. I especially thank the young people who gave
their time to help their community. It gives give me great pride to be
the Mayor of a town that has so many good people.
Today, our Street Dept workers, who only a few hours ago
were fighting water, are now cleaning snow. I give Mother Nature
credit, she doesn't give up, but neither do we and I'm confident we
will continue to give our best to this battle. The river rose to
14.83 feet last night and is now at 14.56 as of 7:30 this morning.
I wish to pay special thanks to Doug and Ann McCann. Last night posed a
significant threat to a large part of the east side and the ONLY way to
fix it was to place sandbags on Doug and Ann's property. If you've seen
their house you know they have it built up to a level that places them
outside the 100 year floodplain. In other words, all the work we were
doing had no real benefit to them as they would remain dry regardless of
what happened in that area. Nonetheless they gave us permission to place
the sandbags on their yard and accepted the possibility of some damage
to their property that would not have been caused by the flooding river.
I thank them for their kindness to your community.
As always, I'll update you when I have new information.
TB <<<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Todd. I might add that at the
time of this writing the river level has dropped to 14.17. That
certainly sounds wonderful although I personally believe the lower river
level is caused by the freezing temperatures and might well rise again
as warmer temperatures return.
------------------------------
Being thankful for volunteers, wonderful people and small town
Subject: A Huge Thanks!
Hi Dad. I write tonight being very proud to say I'm from a small
town and a loving family.
Here's how my day went: This morning started out by having Cory,
from Waynes Heating & Cooling, come out to tell me the most outrageous
sound coming from my washing machine meant that the transmission was
going out. Not exactly what I wanted to hear. Now wait - he said
"do you have a warranty card or any idea how old the washer
is?" (Knowing how time flies and not having the warranty, I thought
"o.k. Susie, we'll be in this afternoon for a new washer.") Not the
case. You see - small town service and Waynes being the business that
it is, we got a call from Susie telling us she had looked up the sale
(which was 8 years ago) and it was still under warranty. Yes, all we
are paying for is the labor to install the transmission. How many
businesses do you think would have tried to sell us a new washer instead
of repairing it?
Then,...... tonight, as most people were settling down for the night,
we received a call that the sandbagging operation should begin around
B&D Flooring and the Smokehouse. As we approached the Smokehouse to
begin sandbagging, the outpouring of people was unbelievable. My
brothers, sisters-in-law, Dilan, Jake, sister, Jen, Jaime, Chris, Dave,
Nick, fellow employees, friends and several members of the volunteer
fire department helping us keep the Country Smokehouse dry. And
yes,... even Kent DeSautel was there once again.
I can't say enough about the benefits of living in a small town but I
sure would like to say THANKS to all who helped us tonight. We are so
fortunate to have such a fantastic group of Family, Firemen and Friends.
Kelly <<<
Thanks a million Kelly. Like I've always said. "The only thing better
than having a fantastic gene pool is to have it, it in a community full
of fabulous friends."
Or so it seems to me.
----------------------------
Speaking of friends. The next note comes from Marjie in Florida.
Good morning Gary,
Keeping you and all of Grafton, all the communities along the Red River
in my thoughts and prayers that the dikes keep you safe and dry.
When I was in Grand Forks in June of 2007, I saw some flooding between
the first part of my bike trip and the end. Our final destination had to
be changed to the "right side of the dikes" and that was in June. I
recall you all being in the news in '97 with the major flooding.
Good luck and God bless.
Marjie <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Marjie. "If the
good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise" (pardon the pun) We are
going to win this one.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
----------------------------
If the Grafton community doesn't make it through the predicted
potential for flood. It will not be because every member of the Grafton
city leadership team. It won't be because Gowan Construction Co.,
Kilmers Excavating Co and hundreds of other folks haven't worked their
rear ends off trying to keep us dry.
As almost always happens when "things get tough", amazing things just
seem to happen. Generally those amazing things happen, because of the
wonderful amazing folks stand at the ready so it can.
For instance Monday morning my son-in-law David decided it would be a
good idea to have some sand bags on hand by the Country Smoke House.
Just in case the water exceeds the dikes. So,... he asked a couple
Smokehouse employees, Mike Misialek & Jon Burke along with my grandson
Nick, if they would mind going over to the City Hall parking lot and
fill some sand bags. They took Jons pickup with trailer in tow and
headed for the sand bagging pile.
Now then,... this is really where the amazing part starts. You'll
remember that "the boys" were going to fill sand bags to protect the
Country Smoke House from potential flood damage. The amazing part
is......... Kent DeSautel, a co-owner of Wallys Supermarkets of Grafton
and Devils Lake, helped them fill the sand bags and load them in the
truck. That's not all, ironically, this whole process just happened to
be at the same time that the Grand Forks Channel 8 television crew was
in town getting a story on our flood problems.
Although you are reading about the "amazing event" in the Gazette. If
you had been watching channel 8 news Monday evening you would have seen
the event in living color.
Now,..... that I've written about it, and now that I have read what I
wrote. Maybe I used the term 'amazing' in error. According to my
Webster, Amazing. suggests with great surprise, astonish or wonder. Yup,
now I am absolutely certain. It really wasn't any great surprise, nor
should I have been astonish in the least. You see, DeSautel's have been
helping people in this community, ever since their father Wally DeSautel
was a young man helping people in this community.
THEN AGAIN,.... after I read that part. I'm beginning to think, doggone
bugger heck shucks. That is AMAZING after all.
So,.... before I share Mayor Burianek's latest message. I would like to
thank everyone, for everything they are doing to protect our homes and
our livelihood.
Mayor Burianek wrote this just prior to noon on Monday Morning. >>>

Gowans crew and equipment has been working as hard and fast as
possible to beat possible flood. Sunday afternoon local police and
firefighters went around contacting residents in the most flood prone
ares of town reminding them of the possibility that the newly
constructed dikes may not hold. The concern, as I understand it, is that
the material used in the dikes is already saturated and extremely
difficult to pack and scape.
That concern along with a forecast of 1 to 2 inches of rain in the next
couple days is more than enough reason for every resident to be
concerned.
I received Mayor Burianek's latest message at 7:00 pm Sunday evening.
Mayor Burianek wrote: >>>>

We have another revised flood projection update.
The NWS is now forecasting a crest of 15 feet by TUESDAY March
24th. Gowan Construction crews are working hard to complete the dikes
west of the Lessard Addition and when needed will complete the levees at
5th Street and the east side of the Park.
There is a great chance of precipitation for our area over the next
72 hours. If not for that, the crest would be far less than that which
is now projected. It is the additional moisture that is of greatest
concern to us now.

March 21, 2009 - Saturday

Todays Gazette contains a message from Mayor Todd Burianek.

The current temperature is 34 degrees.
The "feels like" temperature is 29
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 44/30
Normal H/L temp for this date is 37/19
It was 66 degrees on this date in 1926
The forecast calls for a chance of moisture almost every day next week.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
---------------------------
This is the latest report from the Mayor.
Here's the latest flood update.
+++++++
I'm typing from City Hall where members of the Army Corps of Engineers
have set up operations on this Saturday morning.

Yesterday afternoon, the NWS modified the flood crest projection for the
Park River at Grafton in the following manner:
They project a 13 foot crest IF we do not receive additional
forecasted precipitation.
They project a 14.5 foot crest IF we receive the forecasted
precipitation.
Currently the forecast is for an inch-and-a-quarter of rain with some
snow mixed in by mid-week.

Thus we continue to plan for a 14.5 foot crest.

As the Corps has taken over, it means that larger equipment from private
contractors (Gowan Construction) is being used. You will see the large
trucks hauling clay as they work on the south end dikes. They have
mostly completed work on the north end near the river. One concern that
we have is finding sufficient amounts of clay for the dikes but they are
working on that issue.

The Corps may go to a 24 hour operation as we continue this effort.

If Grafton residents need sandbags, they are available at City Hall and
as I type this I see City Employees are on the job now at the
sandbagging site. They need to lay poly and sandbags on the completed
levees.
If non-Grafton residents need sandbags they can contact Brent Nelson at
352-2311. It is my understanding the County will make those available to
Walsh County residents.

Thanks a million Todd, for keeping us informed and up to date.
Speaking of keeping us up to date. KXPO 1340 am radio's slogan says,
"Depend on us". to that end they have started a web site that provides
us with a whole compendium of information "every day". Check out their
new site at walshcountydailynews.com
I think you will agree it's a pretty neat website. AND, you can ever
listen to many local sports activities on the same site. I see it as
another fantastic effort by the folks from KXPO to help local folks
appreciate and understand our community as well as the entire area.
Congratulations KXPO for help Grafton become the very best community it
can be.

We are fortunate that the Grafton Optimist Club is an active one. I am
pleased to share the following message regarding another one of their
projects.
>>>>> Gary,
Could you mention that the Grafton Optimist Club is having their 2nd
Annual OPTimist OUTing on Friday April 24th at the Fair Oaks Golf Course
club house. There will be food, music, a silent auction, raffle and much
more. This year is a western theme. The evening starts at 7:00pm and
runs until 1:00am. There will be a drawing for $1,000 and five $100
drawings. Tickets are $50 each and are available from any Grafton
Optimist member. All proceeds will be used by the Grafton Optimist Club
to benefit the area youth. The club donates money to area youth teams,
clubs, etc. and also gives out scholarships to two Grafton high school
graduates each year.
Thanks,

Thank you for caring and sharing Phil. I hope this project is just as
successful as the amount of effort it takes to hold it.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
---------------------------
I had my very first Wagon Master of the season at Grafton's Westside
Drive Inn Thursday afternoon. It was even better than I remembered from
last year. AND, the new french fries were also fantastic.
---------------------------
Crews have been working diligently building a dike on the north end of
Western Avenue. Clay for the project is coming from the area just north
of the city electrical maintenance building (formerly the A&H Implement
facilities).
A sand pile beside the sand bagging machine, under the water tower, is
beginning to take on the sense of seriousness only the threat of a major
flood can create.
++++
Graftons local television channel 3 (The Chamber Channel) is urging
city residence to "prepare for a flood". I suspect that means nobody in
Grafton should have anything in their basements, except sailboat fuel.
-----------------------------
I was doing a little research in the Gazette library when, among other
things, a "brainstorm" passed. Wouldn't it be neat if every corner had a
river elevation sign on it? For instance,... on the corner of Hill
Avenue and 3rd Street, along with that sign there could be a smaller
sign just below it saying, "river level.... 15.0 feet".
That way, everyone in town would know where they are,.... in relation to
the river level. I, for one, couldn't tell you within 5 feet what the
elevation is in front of my house. I'd guess most folks don't know the
accurate elevation in front of their homes either.
----------------------------
It's not a well kept secret, the fact that the economy is in the
crapper has been out for a long time. The fact that it is getting closer
and closer to home is obvious in the following message I received from
Verna yesterday. >>>>
Gary — Sad to say, but the Heritage Village board made a decision
last night to close a major source of income,... Gaming. There will
be no more bingo at the Village after Saturday night, March 21st.
With the economy and the drop in numbers of bingo players due to
people moving, deaths, and an increase in bar bingo, we cannot continue
that part of our program due to the lack of revenue. We are hoping
to maintain the Village thru donations and additional fundraisers.
Verna Sherek
Heritage Village & Jugville <<<<<<<
Heritage Village and Jugville is full of the kinds of memories and
dreams that money can no longer buy. Unfortunately, it takes a
significant amount of money just to hold on to those memories.
-----------------------------
I sincerely believe everyone, living anywhere, can look around their
community and see lots of wonderful things going on. I have never really
believed that the people of Grafton are any more special than the folks
anyplace else in the world.
However, because I know, or, know of, many if not most of the folks in
"my town". Hence, I guess that does make them special, certainly to me
anyway.
I've watched Buster send a young couple and a small child to Rochester,
with no questions asked. I've seen Wally take bus loads of folks to
enjoy top named entertainment and pay for their dinners beside. A
brilliant young man was able to attend University and realize his dreams
with the help of a man named Hod. I've watched a cantankerous old farmer
poke and probe a less than knowledgable young man into a success beyond
his wildest imagination. (Thanks Leonard)
And, I haven't even scratched the surface of wonderful folks I will
never forget. Folks like Donny and Chuck, Warren Evans, Paul
Benjaminson, Iver Egland, Milton Johnston, Hugo Kutz and Gordy Stark to
mention a few.
The list of professors at my school of hard knocks goes on right into
infinity. Thanks to Gary, Jerry and Lee for helping me, and all of the
folks that I've met, and, to think there will even be more yet.
I have truly only known two people that I really didn't like. The first
one was me when I feel off my bike, then blamed the boy riding behind
me. The second one was even worse than the first, but again that person
was me, feeling sorry me, instead of helping others with their plight.
Helping others is the topic of the next message regarding Joanie
Silewski's Bone Marrow Donor Drive. The folks that organized and carried
out the Drive are to be commended. The results of their hard work and
perserverance was one the best Bone Marrow Drives ever held. >>>>>
Subject: follow up donor drive
Hi Gary,
Following up on the Bone Marrow Donor Drive. First we want to
thank you for your help in getting the word out there. We had a
wonderful turn out.
700+ people signed up to be possible donors! We were told that for
every 200 people that are tested, on average there is one match. So we
have a possible 4 matches out of our community!!!! And to top that they
have found a match for Joanie!!!! Please visit www.caringbridge.org.
Type in Joanie Silewski and that will take you to her page and you can
follow her progress.
Also the community generously gave to DKMS in the sum of
$10,000.00. It will cost DKMS over $45,000.00 to run the tests that
we turned in. So all contributions were greatly needed and appreciated!
Give Hope. Give Life. And that is exactly what our community did
March 7, 2009!
<<<<<<
The drive, for Joanie is over, although we must realize that the real
plight is only just beginning. I ask everyone who prays to keep Joanie
in them too. For those that do not, then please do what you do, but
remember Joanie a lot.
"You haven't really lived, nor truly have you loved. Until you've

Todays Gazette has the latest message from Grafton's mayor Todd
Burianek.

The current temperature is 15 degrees.
The "feels like" temperature is -8
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 30/19

-----------------------------
I'm pretty sure if there is anyone thinking of running for the Mayor's
position in the next election, mayor Burianek might be willing to let
you "practice" for the next few weeks, during flood season.
------------------------------
Speaking of Mayor Burianek and our potential for flooding. I am not
only pleased to share Todd's latest message, I am also more than a bit
humbled that he considers the Gazette worthy of participating in sharing
the progress of this springs runoff as they relate to Grafton and the
surrounding area.
To that end, although I am not really sure it will be necessary, and,
only if it is needed, I will send out information more than once a day.
The Mayors latest note.>>>>
Subject: RE: SHIVERCITY GAZETTE
WE are doing our best to stay ahead of this flood fight. I'm going to
use you, the Record and KXPO to keep people informed. Whenever I'm in an
airport and the big electronic board indicates my flight is delayed, I
NEED to know why, for how long, when will I be boarding etc.
During this time, I'm trying to ensure that people don't feel like they
are stuck in the airport without sufficient answers to their pertinent
questions.
Along those lines, here's an UPDATE.
City Crews are currently making additions to our levee around the north
side of town along Park Street to Western and 3rd. They will close up
the levee in those areas and then on 5th street. Those levees are
permanently at 12 feet high (flood stage) and we are adding
approximately 5 feet to the top of these for a total levee of 17 feet.
Our flood crest projection is 15.4 feet so we are topping them to
accommodate that much water and more. This will take the better part of
a week to finish. If necessary we will bring in additional crews to help
in this area.
As I type this, Leroy McCann and Mylo are out checking the north branch
area as water has been moving quite quickly in the Crystal to Nash
areas. It slowed down overnight as the temps dropped but is now
accumulating near #9 and 18.
Lessard Addition is now draining after water inundated the south end of
it. Our crews are out clearing debris from that.
You noticed the Sandbag machine is set up in the Fire Department parking
lot across from the Armory. With any luck and lots of Divine Providence
we won't need too much sand, but it will be available.
TB <<<<<
Thanks a million for sharing Todd, and thanks too, for caring for all
of the citizens under your charge.
If I may, I would also like to share a very important fact regarding
dikes that I learned from Beverly Jensen, the Mayor of Drayton during
the flood of 1997.
While discussing the time and equipment needs with the representatives
of the Corps of Engineers. The "experts" suggested that she/we might be
able to get by with less equipment. Mayor Jensen smiled, frowned and
then, looking directly into the eyes of the guy from the Corps,....
said, "Gentlemen we will utilize every piece of equipment we can lay our
hands on AND" she continued, "more if we can find it. When this exercise
is over we do not want to look back and have to say, if we had only had
more people or equipment".
Beverly Jensen, with the help of a small army of workers literally
moved mountains in 1997. The people of Drayton and the community of
Drayton are all the better because it.
-------------------------------
With large trucks hauling clay for dike construction along with giant
backhoes Caterpillar Dozers, bobcats and contractors pickups scurring
around town, there is no question. Grafton will be entering the spring
season at the same time we will be entering the flood season.
However, several folks in the area are also entering another season.
One that, in many respects, is even more difficult for those involved
than spring flooding.
It is the beginning of the Auction Season. The first thing one sees
when walking into Granny's, and I suspect most other business
establishments in the area, is the massive display of Auction Bills
filling the bulletin boards everywhere.
The last edition of the Nor'Wester lists 10 auctions already and I'm
sure there will be several more within the next few weeks. I suppose a
few of this years auctions are due simply because those folks want to
retire, and those don't bother me,.... much. Some on the other hand are
due to the ravages of a ruthless business environment, and they are a
little tougher to take.
Regardless of the reason, one thing I have learned about every auction.
It definitely is not an event for a person with Parkinsons. The minute
the hand starts shaking,.... puffff, I just bought a rusty old garden
tool I couldn't use even if I were healthy enough to do so. And, that's
not the worst of it. When the auctioneer raises his hammer and shouts,
"ALL IN ALL DONE", I can tell you from experience, that is not the time
to let your head start bobbing like a Nixon bobble head in the back
window of 64 chevy car.... pufff,.... I just bought a push type, walk
behind, reel lawn mower with one missing wheel.
Yup, it's auction season alright and I'm going to work real hard at not
going to one.

The sand bagging machine has been strategically placed in the fire
hall parking lot, underneath the water tower. I didn't see any sand in
the lot yet although I'm guessing it will appear there soon.
For some reason I always find the sight of a sand bagging operation
somewhat chilling. It is easy for me to envision the hundreds of
volunteers toiling countless hours trying to save property that todays
modern technology can rectify effortlessly. ++++
Another sign of "potential" water issues is the large Caterpillar dozer
parked just north of the George LaHaise & Sons Plumbing & Heating
facilities.

Speaking of things on the north end of town. We watched a flock of
turkey's (the Thanksgiving kind of turkeys) feeding in Walt Hoffman's,
former, Trailer City Trailer Court. I remember many years ago hearing Cy
Croaker tell someone ---- I suspect after someone complained because he
had run "the Eight Ball" class C race car engine all night getting it
ready to race at Park River ----- that there were a lot of turkeys
living in Trailer City. I'm pretty sure, however, that Cy was referring
to the people and not the birds.

We took a short drive south of town Tuesday evening just to check on
the water conditions along hiway 81 a mile or so past Norman R. farm.
Everything, including your yard looked great Norm.

I'm not really sure what to tell you Gunner. I don't
remember ever promising anyone they would get more from the Gazette,
than the price of the subscription,........ which is nothing.
However, I do have a proposal for the two of you. This summer, when
John is all done making sugar and Gunner isn't traveling around the
country playing golf. We can meet up at Arnesen's Rocky Point Resort.
We'll have a fabulous fish and steak dinner at the Rock Harbor Lodge and
then we'll go out fishing on the famous Lake of the Woods "Walleye

fantastic, and I can guarantee we will have a wonderful time........ I
can't be quite so sure about the catching.

Monday was another absolutely beautiful day in the Northern Red River
Valley. There is hardly a snowman in town that doesn't look sad and
wearing a frown. As far as that goes, every Frosty in town has a really
runny nose.
Grafton's city maintenance crews have been working diligently the past
several days opening storm drains and preparing for any potential spring
water issues.
Mayor Burianek sent the following update regarding Grafton's position
going into the spring "flush" season. The Mayor wrote: >>> Hi Gary
At 5:00 today (Monday) the City Council will meet to ratify the
Declaration of Emergency that I signed yesterday. This will enable us to
be eligible for FEMA funds as we make our flood fight this year.
By now, you've no doubt noticed our Steamer Truck crews out and about.
They worked all weekend defrosting frozen storm drains as we try to keep
up with the melt from a very lovely weekend. Also, last fall all storm
sewers were cleared of debris in order to allow unclogged passage to the
river. Earlier today, the McLeod Drain was cleared as well as ice below
the bridge near South 81. We also began preparation to add to the levees
around the park and on 5th Street. We will keep 5th Street open for as
long as we can, but we will take all necessary steps to contain the
flood waters in the park.
The nice weather has the potential to give us a false sense of security
and while I'm very thankful for it, we are still weeks away from a
possible crest. In this effort we are following one of my life mottos:
Hope for the best; prepare for the worst.
I will keep you and your readers updated throughout this endeavor.

Just a short note to tell you all is well at the Drayton beet factory.
This is the time of year that people start speculating when the season

quiet for me it looks like the first week in June. This is due to the
large crop and the tough task of processing muddy beets. As the factory
runs 24/7 the one thing that stands out for me in the first campaign is
how the workers can keep everything working. No matter how big the

Thanks a million for caring and sharing John. Since I'm no-longer
around to remind my good friends in the factory. Please remind them that
beets come into the factory with dirt on them,..... because they were
grown in the ground. IF, they had been grown on trees, we would be
hearing concerns about the branches and leaves. Or so it seems to me.
ANYWAY, it hardly seems like a year ago that I hobbled down the stairs
of the Federated Church for a fantastic breakfast. If I remember right,
that was for fantastic Pancakes and Sausage.

Subject: marinated pork chops
Gary,
Just thought I would let you know of a marinated pork chop dinner at
the St. Thomas American Legion Club in St. Thomas on Tuesday March 17th,
St. Patrick's day! The event is being put on by the St. Thomas Science
Club, the proceeds will be used to help fund the Science club's trip to
Florida in the spring of 2010. These kids have been working hard to make
this trip a go by numerous fund raisers and events, the cost of the meal
is $10 and it will be an awesome event! Yea I know, people might say
the only thing in Florida is Disney and fun, well I would like to put
in a personal plug, I was involved in the very first trip back when I
was a junior in high school in 1987. I guess that dates me, but oh well,
I have memories that I have not forgotten from my trip. Just one is we
went to NASA and it was only a little more then a year after the
Challenger accident, you could still see the hurt in the people's eyes
out there and their concern for the continuation of space exploration!
Look how much NASA has accomplished! But even more, look at the lasting
affect it's had on me! I always watch whenever they have a launch or
something of interest! If I wouldn't have had the opportunity to take
that educational trip I probably wouldn't have given a rip about what I
see as a national treasure, NASA! My hope is that people will come and
have a very good Marinated pork chop dinner for a great cause!
Being ST. Patty's day and all, you might even find a green beverage on
the south side of the Legion! They will be serving supper from 5
to 8 pm. If anyone has questions please give me a call at 701-520-3040
and if I don't know the answer I will find someone that does!
Thanks,
Tom Kennelly <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Tom. I'm sure whenever the
words Science & School are mentioned in the same sentence, we are all

certainly be,... Mr Bliss.

Gary, How about those BISON making a trip to the big

Also I'd like to ask your readers to email our legislators
and mostly the majority party in Bismark and encourage them to leave
the 120 million in the highway distribution fund that they already
appropriated and to give us the 170 million from the federal stimulus.
They are trying to take 100 million from the highway distribution fund
and replace it with 100 million from the federal stimulus package.
If they do that, the county will have their hands tied.
The stimulus money can be used on certain projects such as previous
federal aid projects and new roads and bridges, meaning we can't use it
to gravel county and township roads, and it also can't used it to repair
roads that didn't have federal funding. I'm also hearing they are
trying to change some funding that will effect our schools. Please call
or e-mail your legislators and if you have friends and relatives
living in North Dakota, please tell them to do the same. Thanks

March 13, 2009 - Friday

Todays Gazette is brought to you complete with a 2009 Spring Flood
related message from Grafton's honorable Mayor Todd Burianek.
-----------------------
The current temperature is -2 degrees.
The "feels like" temperature is -15
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 13/-13
Normal H/L temp for this date is 32/16
It was 56 degrees on this date in 56.
Notice our "normal" high for this date is 32 degrees. When the normal
low reaches 32 we will make the "change" (there's that word again) from
frostbite to skeeterbite.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
---------------------------
I doubt very seriously that there is another topic of discussion, in
the entire Red River Valley, that even comes close to the level of
intensity and concern, as that of the potential of serious spring
flooding.
With the possibility of a serious flood, within a month in our area, it
should come as no surprise that residents living on the ground floor are
worrying and wondering what they should do.
Leroy McCann of Grafton Emergency Services in a recent Walsh County
Record Article warned,.... "Now is the time to prepare your home for
high water." Leroy indicated that a river level of 13½ feet puts the
water level is at the top of the hydrants on 3rd Street and Western
Avenue, with water reaching 2nd Street and Burgamott Avenue. At 14½
feet, McCann said, the city is experiencing major flooding.
I received the following information from Mayor Burianek Thursday
afternoon. I would first like to thank Mayor Burianek for caring enough
to share what appears, in my mind, to be some very important, very
pertinent, information regarding the spring flooding potential in the
Grafton community.
Mayor Todd Burianek wrote; >>>>
I write regarding flood preparation and to ensure you and your
readers that the City of Grafton is doing "everything" possible to
prepare our community for a flood.
Tomorrow we will receive a flood update from the National Weather
Service. It will likely project a flood crest of 14.5 feet. Since
January, our Emergency Management Coordinator, City Administrator and
all department heads have met on an average of once-a-week regarding
flood issues. I have been updated on these meetings and as we get closer
to the flood crest we will have even more frequent updates about this.
In fact, I suspect by next week the City Council will have a special
meeting to discuss the issue and decide on flood protection measures.
On Saturday, Mylo Einarson and I will attend a meeting hosted by Senator
Byron L. Dorgan that will include representatives of the National
Weather Service, FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers as we discuss the
upcoming flood.
The people of Grafton may rest assured that all contingencies are being
discussed and all efforts will be made to do whatever we can to mitigate
the damage this flood may bring. In the end, I invite all citizens to
join me in praying to God that we have a lovely thaw and minimal
flooding to the City of Grafton and our neighbors in Walsh County.
Todd Burianek <<<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Todd. It would be wonderful if
you could find the time to continue to keep us informed. Also,.... I
hope you don't mind me saying that the 14½ foot river level certainly
is cause for concern. And,.... for reasons to numerous to list here, I
still have trouble believing that the best time to "start" preparing for
a flood is less than a month before a "major flood event" is forecast to
occur.
I certainly do believe it is imperative that our mayor, city manager,
council members and Emergency Services personnel be kept abreast of all
flood related information. However, It is equally important to share
that information with the citizens of our community as well.
If a community and it's citizenry emerge from a flood unscathed, it
will grow stronger and continue to survive. If not,... it will begin the
long spiral down a path to oblivion.
In closing I might also add. I have learned to place immense faith in
prayer. However, one should be reminded of the wonderful folks in the
beautiful little country of Holland.
First,.... they protected themselves by building their dikes and
levies.
THEN,.... they pray that they are high enough, and strong enough to
save their country from inundation.
~~~~~~ Or so it seems to me. ~~~~~~
I read the following quote in the last edition of the Walsh County
Record.
"Yes, this WOULD probably bring water into Grafton quicker, (now get
this part) HOWEVER, you can't expect these landowners to face continual
and increased flooding to their homes and property year after year and
not try to alleviate some of these problems."
Can you believe it? Some supposedly intelligent, sane individals
are suggesting that a solution to a flood problem is to start cleaning a
river that floods them. FROM THE UPSTREAM END OF THE RIVER.....
FIRST???????
It sounds like Webster's going to have to redefine the term "silly" in
their next edition.
Now then,..... is it possible that a Walsh County entity actually could
get federal money that would in fact, INCREASE the flood potential for
the city of Grafton? Is it possible that the people of Grafton and the
communities civic leaders could actuall allow it to happen? It certainly
reads that way to me anyway.
According to Channel 8 news last night, Regarding issues of high water,
the City of Grand Forks has, or plans to declare a state of emergency.
That certainly does not mean they will have a serious flood. It simply
means they are going to do "everything" possible to prepare for one.
===========================
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
--------------------------------
For the most part, news over the weekend was relatively slow. I
understand several hundred people participated in the Bone Marrow Drive
at St. Johns Catholic Church although, so far at least, I haven't heard
any of the particulars regarding the event.
++++++
There doesn't seem to be any activity in or around the former Getz Drug
building, and, no additional rumors as to the potential restaurateur
planning to occupy the ground floor of that facility.
--------------------------------
Probably the second most popular question in Grafton lately would be.
Just exactly how high will the Park River actually get this spring?
With the increased prevalence of flood related conversions, the pending
Blizzard watch, and the fact that it really is a relatively slow news
time of the year. I decided it might be a good time to "copy" a few
paragraphs from page 394 of the 100 Year Look at Grafton book regarding
the flood of 1948.
---- Flood waters, the most extensive and destructive since the
settlement of Grafton 67 years ago, descended upon the city Monday
morning with unprecedented force and rapidity, inundating the park
section, isolating the Grafton States School, converting the streets
into canals, flooding basements and the Grafton light and power plant so
that all electric power ceased at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon, depriving
the city of electric current for all appliances and machines, the first
complete blackout in the history of the municipal plant.
As Monday evening approached, Grafton's isolation became more
pronounced, all railroad train service was suspended because of wash
outs on the Great Northern and Northern Pacific tracks. Water was going
over highway 17 west and east to highway 44 which made motoring
hazardous. High water at Minto and a defective bridge south of Ardoch
closed highway 81 to general travel and water was rushing over 81 north
of Grafton.
(the article continues) Flood Threatened
Since Friday the flood treat loomed as a water blanket over a yard
deep was gradually rolling eastward north of Highway 17 converting every
north and south roadbed into a temporary waterfall traveling about a
mile ever 12 hours.
Monday morning water was rushing over the road immediately west of the
Grafton States School, the last barrier, and soon thereafter the worst
flood in the history of Grafton was in progress, forcing the historic
high water of 1897 into obscurity.
----- I might add that a mere two years later, the flood of 1950,
significantly surpassed the flood of 48. It was reported that the
Grafton Gambles Store sold approximately 600 pairs of "hip boots" during
the 1950 flood.
+++++++++++
Ironically, no-one seems to know when Grafton will flood again, or, how
serious the next flood will be. Almost everyone, however, most certainly
agrees that Grafton will flood again. And,.... there is absolutely no
reason to believe that a flood of the 1950 magnitude or greater, is not
in our future.
Or so it seems to me.
The former Getz Drug building has another new owner. A $500 bid allowed
Warsaw contractor Roger Feltman the right to call the former drug store
building his. He says he plans to rent the upper floor of the facility
for offices in a yet to be determined configuration. The first floor
"might" become something resembling an eatery. And, I suspect, the
cuisine of the eatery, if it actually does come to fruition, is also yet
to be determined. I haven't heard whether or not the new owner plans on
resurrecting the former "cigar bar" on the upper level of the drug store
or not However, the windows of the former "cigar bar" would serve as a
fantastic observation area for this this years SummerFest Parade and
celebration.
Lets hope our entire community can band together and help Roger inject
new life into the building that the Getz enterprise organization
"donated" to the Grafton community so many years ago.
----------------------------
The last word on the front page of the latest Walsh County Record is
that Grafton ONLY has a fifty - fifty chance of having a flood this
spring. So the $64,000 question is...... How much sand will each
resident need? How many sand bags will we need to fill and just how high
should they be piled. And,.... when should each resident begin diking
their property?
Perhaps the 45 million dollar question could be. Do we have a flood
protection plan "SHOVEL READY" to comply with the presidents stimulus
package. If not, why not. Sixty one years ago this spring Grafton
suffered a major flood. Several folks said then that we could expect
another one, and sure enough. Two years later we had a more serious
flood. Several folks then said, "we should expect, and should be
planning for an even greater flood in the future."
This is the future... Or so it seems to me.
Saturday, after participating in the Bone Marrow Donor Drive at St.
Johns Parish Center in Grafton for Joanie Silewski. You may well be
feeling so great about the wonderful thing you've done, you can head
over to the brand spankin' new Minto Community Center and participate in
a benefit dance scheduled there.
I received the following information from Chris regarding the big
event in Minto.
