April 30, 2007 - Monday - Grafton, ND

Modern medicine has finally made it possible for us to live longer,....
if we give up everything that makes us want to.
-----------------------
The current temperature is 54 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 81/37
Normal H/L temp for this date is 62/36
The high temperature on this date in 1985 was 90 degrees. Not exactly
snowman weather.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
Grafton made the Sunday edition of the Grand Forks Herald. It doesn't
happen very often so when it does, it's must really be news.
Herald columnist Ryan Bakken started off his column on page 2B in bold
print, WAL-MART EYES GRAFTON. Holy Smokers I'm thinking. There really
must be something to the "rumor" about Wal-Mart coming to Grafton. If
not, why would a professional writer like Ryan Bakken waste his time,
and ours, writing about it? If there wasn't some credence to the rumor,
why would Graftons Mayor say "maybe"?
I think Ryan Bakken should be commended on his Wal-Mart eyes Grafton
column. And, while someone is doing that. They should also remind Ryan
that Graftons population isn't falling. It is merely readjusting for
modern economic trends and, all the while, Our Growing is Showing.

and looks like work." Thomas Edison

One of our members sent the following.
>>>> One thought on Wal Mart, they don't have a set national price for
many items they sell, they merely check prices in the immediate area and
price their products slightly lower. When they advertise guaranteed
lowest prices, it's only in the immediate shopping area. For example
there are items at the Fargo store which may be lower priced than the
identical item in Grand Forks, a direct result of competition. <<< I
procedure, I might add, that is practice by many if not most
multi-facility operations.
--------------------------
Rumor has it that Ray Gourde is cleaning and painting up another area
of his building on west 5th street. Word is another new business is
cooking up a plan to take up residence there soon.
"Graftons Growing is Showing."
---------------------------
Speaking of new businesses starting up in Grafton. The Country
SmokeHouse is just a few days away from opening their operation on west
5th street. Already several folks have been seen looking in the windows.
It won't be long and they will be able to see the whole operation,
inside and out.
---------------------------
The rumor about Otto's Auto coming to Grafton has finally died. It is
now a fact, as a whole string of great looking cars and pickups fill
their lot. Everything "says" they plan to open on the 1st of May
although I'd be willing to bet, if you see something on the lot you
like, you could get it before Tuesday morning.
----------------------------
Today (Monday) is the last day you can request a ticket for the 2007
Annual Grafton Firefighters Calendar Drawing. If you would like to
participate in this years Drawing for $11,520 in cash prizes. Simply
send me an e-mail requesting the number of tickets and the names you
would like to have on them. THEN, this is important too, make the check
payable to the Grafton Fire Department and mail it to me at -- Gary Moe,
764 Birch Crt, Grafton, ND 58237.
I will fill out the ticket as per your instructions and make certain
that it gets turned in on time for the drawings.
There will be two drawings every day for 6 months. various drawings
will range from $20 all the way up to $500. Everyone will have exactly
the same chance to win every drawing. After your name has been drawn and
recorded. It will be returned to the barrel for the very next draw. If I
remember correctly, someone won twice in the same week in last years
drawing.
Of course it's great if you win. The most fantastic thing, however, is
you are supporting the Grafton Area Volunteer Firefighters and
everything they do.
And that my fine friends,... makes me a very happy father of a
Firefighter.

Speaking of being a very happy person. Gerry sent the following note

were also several pictures, but these are not included on the web site.

Regret, is little more than insight, one day late.
-----------------------
The current temperature is 51 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was 78/41
Normal H/L temp for this date is 61/36
The fact that it was 95 degrees on this date in 1952 doesn't mean there
is no-such thing as global warming. It simply means it was warmer then,
than it is now.

Someone, or more, decided to make an unauthorized withdrawal from the
Gate City Bank in Park River yesterday. According to news reports the
bandit entered the bank carrying a gun with his head and face covered.
The report didn't indicate if the gunman would be using the money to pay
for a flight back to bagdad. However, by the description of his attire,
it does sound like that's a possibility.
Although I'm not sure what local law enforcement officials are asking
of the general public. I'm sure they would like to know if anyone sees a
man walking down the street with his head covered, a pistol in one hand
and a bag full of money in the other.
I'm guessing the folks at Gate City will be looking for a security gate
in the future.
--------------------------
It's no secret, this is pothole season. It's a problem for every town
north of the cold line. Graftons GMU Crew has been out filling the
irritating little voids in the blacktop. I remember Hans Hovde used to
call potholes job security.

PLEASE REMEMBER, the North Valley Marketing class is having a benefit

Stauss, bless her heart!! The store is huge now in GF with just about
anything you would ever need. I'm sure almost all of us have been there
a time or two. I can't help but think that employment from walmart in
your city for many people would be a good thing. Also people shop there
for good prices. I recently purchased a set of tires for my
PU truck at walmart and a super deal was sealed for sure. These would
have cost me a little more than 850.00 across town and after a 10
percent discount for assoc. and 10 percent at christmas time for
purchases above a certain amount, and walmarts everyday low prices I
walked out of there smiling for less than 400.00 bucks. The tires are
major brand name also. Gary, I just thought I would put my 2 cents in
for Sam!! Good Luck to Grafton in the future with this possibility. Mike

---------------------
It's no secret any longer. The rumor about Wal-Marts interest in coming
to Grafton has made it's way into almost every household in the area. Of
course it's to early to tell IF or when Sam's Giant chain will come to
town. I can say that, so far, the notes I'm getting are about 99% in
favor and one person suggesting it would be a large pie of hors
droppings.
At any rate, when such discussions arise, it's always fun to know what
members of our civic leadership think of the idea. I am pleased to be
able to share a note I received yesterday from Graftons Mayor Todd
Burianek. He wrote. >>>
Dear Gary:
Like everyone else, I've heard the Walmart rumors. My view on this issue
it the same as it is for any issue: IF IT HELPS GRAFTON IN ANY WAY, I'M
ALL FOR IT.
Obviously, a Walmart issue is complicated to say the least. After
Denny's closed, numerous people asked, "What's the City going to do
about it?" from which I infer the questioner expected me to commence a
search for a new grocery store. Today, I read the anonymous letter in
your Gazette which suggests the City should somehow limit grocery space
in a possible Walmart. As I see it, I can't have it both ways: a grocery
store that many people want, but not a good enough grocery store to
compete in town. Similarly, people say the City should do more for
retail economic development, but there are others who say "Keep Walmart
out."
I expected the job of Mayor to often put me between a rock and a hard
place, and this issue clearly does that. As I stated in a letter to the
editor, I can't stop any business from coming to town any more than I
can command a business to come to town.
I guess my Polish-Bohemian roots don't allow me to get too excited about
rumors so I shall not in this case either. But IF IT HELPS GRAFTON IN
ANY WAY, I'M ALL FOR IT and I believe any new business that can draw
customers to the community and can keep locals here for their shopping
is a good thing.
Or so it seems to me!!
Todd Burianek <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Todd. Of
course the Wal-Mart issue will be a sticky one at best. Unfortunately
there are so many things the citizens of our community desire that
cannot be purchased locally.
Some how, some way, our community needs to do a better job of providing
those needs, or, we will dwindle down to nothing.
AND, we will need to address the issues of flood control if we are ever
to expect any increase in population.

The disastrous fire at Wally's Supermarket on Easter Sunday so many
years ago was devastating to say the least. Not only for the DeSautel
family, but for all of the families directly or indirectly involved with
the store. In fact, it was a serious blow to the Grafton economy.
Fortunately, no-one was seriously hurt (physically) in the fire and
fortunately the DeSautel family decided to rebuild. Today their local
supermarket is not only significantly bigger, and better, than the one
destroyed by fire, the complex includes the largest off sale liquor
store in town. And, they have added several additional lots adjacent to
the supermarket. They added several permanent greenhouses, a garden
center and sales lot on that property.
Since that devastating Easter Sunday disaster so many years ago. The
DeSautel family has not only rebuilt and expanded their Grafton
Supermarket operation, they have added a Supermarket and Liquor store in
Devils Lake and a large Supermarket in Roseau Mn., among other things.
The DeSautel family, through hard work and perseverance, has turned the
devastation they experienced on that dreadful Easter Sunday afternoon,
into a dynasty of sorts. Put another way, they were given a lemon, and
they turned it into lemonade.
Something else happened on that fateful day so many years ago, and I
would like to share that with you as well. It comes in the form of a
letter I received from Mario Gourde.
He wrote: >>> Dear Gary,
Some of your Gazette articles in the last couple days have really
brought back a lot of memories for myself as well as many others.
It was around 4 pm on Easter Sunday when my pager went off. When I
drove by Wally's, on my way to station 1, I could see smoke coming out
of the north end of the building, increasing my heart rate just a
little.
When we got there, several of us entered the building to see what we
were up against. It wasn't long before we were coming out because the
fire was already in the roof area. I remember a bunch of us helping
Harry Misialek and others try to save pictures and whatever else out of
the courtesy office. My most vivid memory was looking back in at the
store, knowing I would never see it like that again. These are just a
few things that I remember from that day.
It was this fire, and a few others, that helped me decide that I
wanted a career in the fire service. I now work in Aberdeen, South
Dakota for the Aberdeen Fire and Rescue as a firefighter/EMT. None of
this would have been possible without my several years of active duty
with one of the best volunteer departments in North Dakota, the Grafton
Volunteer Fire Department.
Sincerely,
Mario Gourde, FF/EMT
Aberdeen Fire and Rescue <<<<
Thanks a million for caring and sharing Mario. Your story and that of
the DeSautel family gives us all reason to remain optimistic in the face
of disastor.

Graftons local radio station, KXPO, should be commended for there
efforts in suggesting "we" shop at home whenever possible. For the past

station promote "shopping at home" and, the value that small communities
can obtain by doing so.
I might also point out that the suggestion applies to every community
not just "ours". Thanks a million KXPO!!!

For those that truly believe competition is good, and, that everyone
benefits from it. You might try convincing the folks in Park River of
that. Rumor, has it, one of their Doctors will be leaving Park River and
going to the new medical facility in Grand Forks. The one that claims it
won't effect Altru, or any of the surrounding areas medical facilities.

The other day I mention Bob Levos (on his birthday) and, received the
following note. >>> Gary, within a very broad range, probably no matter
how much you compliment Bob Levos you could not overdue it. It is fair
to say that Bob's tenure at American Crystal has resulted in millions
and millions of more dollars to the Red River Valley. Maybe others would
have come up with these ideas, but what we know is Bob did. Thanks, Bob.
I have been on a few boards that have conducted a "nationwide search"
when looking for a new employee. Here is what I have observed. The
people who have been the most successful have been from here (ND and NW
MN). In colleges in the past just think of Loftsgaard at NDSU and
Clifford at UND. Just watch what will happen now with Gary Hagen at
Mayville, and John Richmond at Wahpeton. At Crystal it was Al Bloomquist
who made the transition to the coop work. Even though Horvath is from
Milwaukee I am sure it was working with people from here that has made
him the successful president he has been, and I expect the same from
Dave Berg. We very seldom need a nationwide search. We raise, or at
least teach, our own.
Ralph Kingsbury <<< Thanks a million Ralph. I should point out, as it
was to me, yhat no-one individual in an organization "makes or breaks
it". I mentioned some of the areas Bob played a significant roll in. Of
course others were involved, however, the 17th was Bobs birthday and
that was the day to remember his participation in the company that I
too, spent so many years of my life with.

As expected, Wal-Mart rumors continue to abound. >>> Hi Gary,
I am not an expert, so please don't use my name but I think Grafton
should go for Wal Mart. However, I hope that your "planning
commission" will be very involved before a permit is given to them.
The plus side of Wal Mart will be added employment, additional taxes,
and they do sponsor local events. (I believe that a certain
percentage of their profits are returned to the community. Hey, maybe
new baseball jerseys!) One thing that is nice for your senior
citizens, is that at Christmas they have the store open for seniors
only, they help you chose gifts for the grandchildren and even gift
wrap them for you, while you arehaving coffee. And at an
extradiscount! Theplanning commission in my town limited the
square footage for groceries so as not tobecompetition for the
markets. They carry a very small variety of food items but it is nice
for the customer to be able to pickup that one iteminstead of
having to go to the market for it.We do not have a gas station; we
do have a optical department which is leased to a local eye doctor.
As we didn't have ashoe store when it was built,Wal Mart has a
pretty big shoe department. So my opinion is to work with them so
they will be an addition to Grafton and not a competitive store. Our
city resisted it for several years, now that it is here, I have heard no
complaints against it. But your city officials have to be
the"leaders" and Wal Mart has to be the "follower". <<< Thanks a
million for caring and sharing. So far, we haven't even heard if our
city leaders are for, or against a Wal-Mart.
++++
You might be able to guess which side this note leans. >>> Don't use my
name please.....
I'm all for Wal-Mart-- it would keep people from driving to Grand
Forks and attract a lot of the small town people (Cavalier, Langdon,
Park River, Fordville, Drayton, St Thomas).... it's a good thing. I
think it would attract more business and increase the business of our
current ones! <<< This one too, is self explanatory.
--------------------------
Speaking of birthdays. Today (Tuesday) is the day that Dan Gowan
celebrates the anniversary of his birth. I have had the pleasure of
working with Dan for a great many years. At a time when I truly needed
someone that I could rely on to tell me what they thought and not what
they thought I wanted to hear. Dan Gowan was there. Whenever a helping
hand or additional effort, was needed. Dan Gowan was there. Whenever my
inabilities would appear, Dan would appear there too.
For those reasons and a myriad more, I wish my good friend and fellow
sugar tramp Dan Gowan a HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
Though I received the following quote from my good friend Howard
Wendelbo. It most certainly applies to Dan Gowan as well. EACH OF US
IS A VITAL THREAD IN ANOTHERPERSON'S TAPESTRY;
OUR LIVES ARE WOVEN TOGETHER FOR A REASON.
One of the best things to hold onto in this world is a friend.

Stew Bass was born in Stevensville, Montana, May 25, 1921. He served as
a Navy Flyer aboard carriers during world War ll. After serving 4½
years of military service Stew attended Montana State University,
Missoula. There he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in business
administration.
Many will remember Stew as Vice President of American Crystal Sugar
Company. I will always remember Stew Bass standing in front of a room
full of sugarbeet growers during the annual sugarbeet preharvest
meeting. He would lean forward, just a bit, look out over the crowded
room full of farmers and begin the meeting with the following.
"Well gentleman, here we are again, just a few hours away from another
sugarbeet harvest. The time of the year when each and every one of you
would run over your own mother,.... for one more load of sugarbeets." As
always, the entire room would explode with laughter. Partly because
Stew's statement was funny,.. and,.. partly because many if not most in
the room understood exactly how close to the truth Stew's statement
really was.

Gary:
The 'advertising' sayings being bandied about on the Gazette lately
remind me of one often used by Digby Odell, the mortician on the old
radio show, "The Life of Riley" featuring William Bendix. In a
deadpan voice he would often say: "We'll be the last to let you
down". He also was know for: "I've covered a lot of ground today" and
"You may not like flowers at first, but they'll grow on you." His
catchphrase, as he exited the scene was, "I must be shovelling off."
Lloyd W. Hanson <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Lloyd. I
remember The Life of Riley radio programs. Unfortunately we just don't
seem to 'watch' radio as much as we used to.
--------------------------
The other day I received a picture of an interesting mushroom. It was
found on the grave site of a deceased cialis salesman in a local
cemetery.
---------------------------
The mention of Wal-Mart coming to town, any town, always seems to
conjure up interest. As with any issue, some are for and some are
against.
For instance, the first note I received in that regard leaves little
question of it's intent. >>>>
The worst imaginable destruction of all small town businesses:
===== The arrival of Wal-Mart. =====
Don't let them into town. <<<<
It's probably fair to say there isn't many wasted words in that
comment.
++++
This one leaves open the possibility that "something" good might
happen.
Gary:
Surprised to hear Wal-Mart might be coming to Grafton.
Looking at it from a positive side. It might be good for Grafton.
They probably won't put in a super store so they won't hurt the grocery
business. Maybe no gas station.
If they built it east of town they might get some people off the
interstate. It should draw Park River, Cavalier, Drayton and maybe
Stephen. Now that gas will always be around $3.00 it could keep people
in town and people from north, east and west from breezing through.
The one thing the city should insist on is to have them put up a nicer
looking building than they normally do. Most of the stores down south
are required to put a nice facade on the front and paint the building in
pastel colors instead of the ugly gray, blue and red.
Wal-Mart always goes along with it and they certainly look alot better.
Also they make them do extensive landscaping.
Grafton is losing alot of that business now, so what the hell, go for
it and welcome them. Some times change is good.
Don't need to put my name on this as we don't need to start any wars.
<<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing. Whether Wal-Mart should or
shouldn't "come to town" leaves ample room for debate. If the question
is, for the betterment of the residential community. The answer would
most definitely fall in only one direction. If, on the other hand, the
question is for the betterment of the business community, the answers
would be much more difficult to quantify and qualify.

Todays Gazette is being brought to you, in part, by MODERN MAN.
---------------------
The current temperature is 54 degrees.
Yesterdays H/L temperature was N/A
Normal H/L temp for this date is N/33
You may have already noticed the Gazette is wearing it's summer name.
Now that the average low temperature is above 32, we change from frost
bites to Skeeter bites.

"Profanity makes ignorance audible."
==================================
L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
-----------------------
The latest rumor on the opening date for Otto's Auto is on, or about,
the 1st of May.
-----------------------
Modern man is one who drives a mortgaged car over a bond-financed
highway on credit card gas.
-----------------------
There still isn't any construction activity on the corner of Hill Ave.
and 12th Street. It could be possible the proposed Subway on that corner
is in fact a subway and all the construction is underground.
------------------------
The word on the street, in Granny's, in the parking lots and, I
suspect, in the privacy of most homes in the area is,.... Wal-Mart's
coming to town. Yup,... some folks have said it before, some have
suggested it lately. However, the Wal-Mart's coming to Grafton rumor is
not only buzzing around the immediate Grafton area. We spent the last
few days in Aberdeen South Dakota and I even heard mention of it there.
I have some very serious reservations as to whether we really need a
Wal-Mart store in town. On the other hand, folks would find it more and
more difficult to justify the 45 mile trip south for a cumber-bun for a
scarecrow.
-----------------------
Speaking of new businesses in town. I noticed the marquee in front of
Simonsons Gas Station is featuring bakery products from Welchs Bakery.
Then as I walked into the Pamida Store, I noticed numerous signs
promoting Park Rivers Welshs Bakery products there too. Later that day I
was told Grafton Square is handling Welchs Baked Goods as well.
That, in my opinion, qualifies Welshs Bakery as "another business,
doing business in Grafton."
It's true, Graftons growing is showing.
-------------------------
There is still time to get into the Firefighters annual Calendar
Drawing. Tickets are only $20 each for a chance at $11,520 in cash to be
given away. Every name that's pulled will be returned to the barrel for
a chance at the next drawing. Theoretically, you could win the whole
kit-n-kabuttel.
Some of the latest Grafton Area Firefighter supporters are. June
Erlendson, (also a baseball ticket) Nels & Sonia Midgarden, Brad
Osowski, Duane Kargel, Mike Callahan, Laverne & Phyllis Hoeper, the
Lorangers, Donna Fisher, Wanda Petitclerc, Gary & Rosemary Fisher, and
Jerry Lysengen. I am very pleased and proud to deliver your acts of
kindness and support to the loyal members of our Fire Department. And,
in their behalf, I thank you sincerely and wish you all "good luck".

==== HAPPY BIRTHDAY DENISE ====
It all started on a Saturday a little more than a few years ago. Kenny
Barta was walking up and down the halls in front of the maternity room.
Paul Anka was on the radio singing his newest hit, very appropriately
titled "Having my Baby" when all of a sudden Ken heard a slap, a slight
cry, and wouldn't you know it. Just then Billy Swan's new hit single, "I
can Help", came on the radio. I can't be sure but I think Ken was heard
saying as he headed for the door. Okay Billy, you can help, but I'm
going to get me some cigars and celebrate.
Denise Barta joined 203,302,031 legal United States Citizens that day.
Pat and I are most thankful that when she grew up, she married our
youngest son Brad. Together they have provided us with a wonderful set
of twins, Jade & Ty and Trevor Lynn.
Happy Birthday Denise we love you very much. Mom and Dad Moe

Subject: thanks to Wally & Ione...again
Dear Gary, Today I was sitting in the Family Waiting Room at Unity
Hospital with my dad as his wife was having surgery. I looked around
the attractively decorated room and saw that Wally & Ione DeSautel have
provided the furnishings for the room. I guess it didn't surprise me,
since they are so generous in so many ways for so many things in the
community! It did make the long wait more comfortable. THANK YOU
WALLY AND IONE, AGAIN!!
Please keep my name secret. <<<< And, although your name will remain a

will not. Thank you so much, for caring and sharing.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
Monday morning there was every indication something was going to happen
at the former Johnson Used Cars Sales facility. Rock DeSautel, from GMU
was sweeping the parking lot. He did such a good job about the only
thing left on the lot when he finished was the anticipation that
"something" was about to happen.
-------------------------
I am pleased Keith decided to share the following. He wrote. >>> Gary
-
I got a bang out of your opener on Thursday 4/12, on the
Outback Septic Co. "If you can poop it we can scoop it". It reminded me
of one I read the other day that said "We're No. 1 in the No. 2
business".
Keep up the good work
- Keith Mohagen <<< Thanks a million Keith, I really questioned if I
should put that in. Now I'm glad I did.
--------------------------
"Nothing is enough for the person to whom enough is too little."
--------------------------
Rocks Electric has re-installed the giant Family Dollar sign in front
of the Family Dollar store on Hiway 17.
--------------------------
I still haven't heard valid confirmation on what appears to be a
second "loan until you get paid" store in town. If I had my way, I'd
have more pay days,... than pay-day loan stores.
---------------------------
This is the day R. W. (Bob) Levos celebrates the anniversary of his
birth. It could,.. and should, be a day that Red River Valley Sugarbeet
Growers celebrate as well. Along with Joe Kilichowski, Bob helped
pioneer the art of splitting beet storage piles allowing beets to store
longer and in better condition.
Bob was instrumental in the implementation of a satisfactory forced air
sugarbeet storage deepfreeze program and he fostered the very first
deepfreeze Sheds in the industry. He was at the helm when the process of
covering storage piles with plastic tarps which also enhanced long term
storage of the sugarbeet.
Even though Bob will always be directly associated with all of the
above mentioned "improvements", and the sugar industry in general will
appreciate untold value from them. In my opinion, Bob must not be
forgotten for two additional contributions to American Crystal Sugar
Company and ultimately the entire industry.
Bob should be given credit for conjuring up and nurturing the concept
of a sugar beet piler that could "walk like a duck". A piler that could
continuously pile sugarbeets, and, build a level pile at the same time.
Even tho Bob's "walking piler" idea has benefited and saved beet growers
literally millions of dollars over the years. Bob Levos' greatest
contribution to the sugarbeet industry is the work he did to formulate
and orchestrate The Sugar Quality Payment System. (including the
construction of a first in the industry quality control lab) In my
opinion, the Quality Payment System has done more to bring about the
possibility of growing high quality, high sugar content, low impurity
sugarbeets than anything since the Mormons moved west to Utah.
I am very proud to have had the opportunity to work alongside a man
that has done so much, for so many.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY --- BOB LEVOS
Pat and I, and, our entire family, thank you Bob, For everything you
have done and we wish you the very best on your special day.

L O C A L news & stuff,.. mostly stuff.
------------------------
You may have noticed that the normal H/L temperature for this date is
53/31. When the normal low temperature reaches 32 degrees, the
Shivercity Gazette will be put on the shelf and the Skeeterville Gazette
will take over.
It's the time of the year when we set aside the time of year for frost
bite and replace it with Skeeter bites.

Don Imus is living proof, you can get kicked off the air for using
words with less than four letters,..... too.

If you should happen to stop by Rogers Corner Cut Barber Shop (formerly
Wollitz) next door to the vacant lot once occupied by Reds News and
Sports, and, you find yourself a tad short of the price of a hair cut.
All you need do is run across the street to the 'loan until pay day'
business setting up shop in the former North Western Bell Building.
-------------------------
I heard a rumor Saturday morning that our newest liquor establishment,
the Last Chance Saloon & Grill, has engaged the services of a bouncer.
I'm not exactly sure what the duties of a bouncer might be, although I'm
pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with basketballs. I guess our
little city really is growing.
--------------------------
The Storage Pro's have certainly surrounded the former Robertson's
Lumber Company property on the corner of 5th and Wakeman. The new
rental storage facility offers a variety of storage sizes and, for
improved security, the entire area offers adequate lighting as well.
--------------------------
My sincere thanks goes out to Norman Russum and Mike Such for joining
the 2007 annual Grafton area Volunteer firefighters calendar drawing
event. Your contributions will help our firefighters be all they can be.
I am especially proud of the part many of our Gazette family members
have taken in numerous benefits throughout the year. I am impressed with
the multitude of ideas, reasons, excuses they have developed to donate
in the name of helping those in need.
From those giving their time, energy and money to help area youth
suffering serious trauma from accidents, and the talented folks
responsible for setting up fund raisers for those less fortunate than
others.
Although I'm reasonably sure the letter I am about to share, wasn't
intended to go into several thousand households. It was sent to me as a
means of caring and sharing. In it, I found a myriad of inferences that
many, not knowing the author, might not see.
I felt a love and compassion for people, that I'm certain, was learned
at home in his youth. As I read the letter I could feel the emotion in
the writers lines.
His letter made me feel extraordinarily wonderful. Dan wrote. >>>
SUBJECT: Fund Raiser
Gary, I enjoy reading the Gazette and also helping out the community
that I lived in for 19 years. I still call Grafton home even though I
have lived in Colorado for 32 years now. If you would please sell me a
baseball and firefighters booklet and put my nephew Zach Dusek's name on
them, I would appreciate it.
The snow keeps coming here in Denver, last week we received about 4

Dan Molde <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Dan. As per
your request, Zach has been entered into this years Firefighter Calendar
Draw event and the Grafton Baseball Annual Calendar Draw as well.
------------------------
Just in case someone has missed it in an earlier Gazette. There is
still time for anyone to enter in the 2007 Annual Grafton Area Volunteer
Firefighters Calendar Drawing. The tickets are only $20 each or 5 for
$100. There will be 2 Draws per day for 6 months. Two drawing for $500
each on May 28 and Sept. 3rd.
There will be two drawings for $250 each on July 4th. and two $100
draws each day on May 1st, Aug 15th, Sept 11, Oct 31. Two $50 drawings
daily October 7th through 13th. and all the rest of the draws will be
for $2 each.
Each time a name is drawn, the winner is recorded and that name is
thrown back in for the very next draw.
A total of $11,520 in cash will be given away. Checks should be written
payable to the Grafton Fire Department and can be sent here to Gary Moe,

Obviously, yesterday wasn't a great day for selling a bright red Arctic

Loren Lundberg shared the following comments. Gary:
It seems to me that your older brother NEEDS your Arctic Cat;
he has a motorcycle to crash on warm weather days, but on nasty weather
days in CA, it would be nice to have a Arctic Cat ATV
4-wheeler.....Thank Goodness that he was a MUCH better driver in 1960 in
the Turboglide Terror.....why do you suppose your dad never answered
when we asked "How do you like your new Chevy?". In my case, I always
thought that I got a "Harumph" because I had been with Dave since
kindergarten..... good old seniority points.... LL <<< Thanks a million
for the sales pitch Loren. The thing I remember best about the 60
turboglide was,.... we didn't have it very long. I remember trying it
out "between the tracks" one time and we almost had to rewind the stop
watch half way through. A significant difference from the 57 pontiac
4-door hard top of a few years earlier.
