The presidents plan to send 5,000 troops to protect "our" southern
borders makes about as much sence as a mouse crawling up an elephants
backside with immoral intent on his mind.
Obviously, someone forgot to tell the president that by the
time you split them into 4 shift's, take into account sick leave,
vacation, coffee breaks, smoke breaks, funeral leave, maturnity leave,
and, allow for time to send and receive jokes thru the e-mail. There
will only be a handful of people left to actually gaurd "our" borders.
AND, that's just about exactly what we have there now.
"Let he that professes we owe the world a safe haven from poverty,
be the first to open his spare bedroom, davenport and living room floor
and refrigerator to the flood of non-registered immigrants coming over
the border."

I suspect "our" laws and regulations would be significantly
differant, if the folks that made them, had to pay for them with their
own money.

Gary, your frustration is felt all around the nation, hence President
Bush's address last evening. I suspect there's a little racism (we're
all human), a little xenophobia (fear of the new, fear of change), but I
think most people are just outraged at the lawlessness of it all.
Americans tend to love the law (hence Court TV, CSI and Law and Order
series et al.) Businesses break the law to hire cheap labor, and people
break the law coming over our borders. That used to be nothing, but
after September 11, 2001, things have changed. North Carolina is one of
the biggest destinations after California and Texas for illegal aliens.
The majority of them are hard-working, honest people, but illegal
nevertheless.
St Mark's is considering seriously opening an ESL tutoring program, in
order to smooth these folk's paths to citizenship, help them out of
poverty, and hopefully assimilate them into the culture. Lutherans down
here have had all the old country (German, mostly) knocked out of them
for over a century - perdy darn well assimilated, if you ask me! Anyhow,
we're asismilating, too. I wish everyone could see our cabbage and
broccoli. Red piedmont clay, amended properly, seems to nourish our
plants just like Red River Valley soil nourished our rhubarb on Edgewood
Avenue.

I am pleased that so many remember Gene and Frances Fortner. David

I don't know why I remember that except I think at one time they lived
down in our old neighborhood on 2nd Street, across the alley from my
Dad's garden. You are right, the lip stick was bright red. David <<<

Joyce (Ebertowski) Anderson shared this memory. >>> Gene's wife's
name was Frances. She was such a great neighbor to us also. She used to
be on our party line; way back when. Frannie would pick up the phone
without checking to see if anyone else was already using it, and start
dialing away. If we were in the middle of a converstion, we would get to
hear the whole number dialed, and all the while we would be saying
"Frannie, we're on the phone". When she got done dialing we would
usually hear, "Is somebody on the line" from her, and we would have to
explain all over again that, yes, we were on the line. I'm sure glad we
don't have to depend on party lines anymore. Joyce. <<< Thanks a million
Joyce, I too remember the party line phone system. At times it could be
frustrating. Then again so too can cell phones.

Wally sent the following memories of the Fortners. >>> Dear
editor, You were wondering who Gene Fortner was married to. Her
name was Frances. They were good people. Their pride and joy was their
little dog, and, the dog loved the the same.
Oh,.. that red lip stick.... I have never seen an equal. We
did a lot of charge accounts i the old store on fifth street. I always
remember they were the first to pay their bill every month,.. that was
with no exception.
My biggest memory of Frances was one day I went across the alley
to get a pail of hot water ( I didn't have hot water ) as I walked
through the kitchen she was bending under a table getting an aluminium
kettle. There was were a lot of kettles under that tables,... and as I
went by I kind of bumped her on the backside, she went forward into all
those kettles and it made the biggest noise I have ever heard, or will
ever hear.
She got up and started hollering at me -- BIG TIME -- I said I was
sorry (well kinda) The people were shocked at how loud she could shout.
I hit for the front door and she followed me out to the street. The
people at Stan's Cafe (across the street) came out to see what was going
on at Zinkes. Well I hit for the store and to this day I can't remember
if I got the pail of hot water or not. But I got myself in hot water.
Yup this is true and we became better friends.
I miss people like Gene and Frances, they don't come any better.
The Water Boy, WALLY <<< Thanks a million for caring and
sharing Wally. I remember Frances always seemed to carry a reasonably
well used, wet, dish towel. One day, when Frances was going to bring me
a cup of coffee, the cup had "something" in it. As she set it down in
front of me, she stuck that "well used" dishtowel into the cup and
scratched out the crude inside and poored coffee into it. She looked at
me and smiled with her bright red lipstick beaming from ear to ear and
said, "it's Okay, I got most of it otta there." And,... I guess (hope)
she did.

From time to time I receive notes requesting I not use their name.
This is one of them, and, I think you'll be able to tell why. The
purpose of the Gazette is to exchange ideas. This note certainly
qualifies in that area, and, maybe may open some important dialog to
boot.

These ramblings might not make much sense and if you use them, please
keep my name off.
Grafton has 4 or five banks. Now,.. only one new car dealer, two
grocery stores one hardware strore etc. This would indicate that the
banking business is very profitable (which I guess everyone knows).
What do these banks in Grafton do with their investment capital and
their deposits that are made by local people? Do they invest it back
into Grafton? I haven't seen much new investment. I'll bet only a small
fraction stays in town. Most of it goes to Minneapolis or San
Francisco. This takes an enormous amount of money out of the
community. Just think of the economic activity that could be going on
if they were required to leave a good portion of our money in
Grafton. Banks have no monetary competion, they have talked the
government into letting them pay the same interest to everyone.
The Chamber of Commerce should get the local bank managers
together and tell them to leave a bigger share of their money in town or
move their bank to Minneapolis. These banks really hurt the small
town and help the larger ones. <<<
WOW,... if this note doesn't jog a thought and a note or two, I'll
be surprised. There's no question in my mind that the Chamber of
Commerce along with the folks from "our" local financial institutions in
conjuction with the residents of the area need to get together and
decide whether or not "we" want to continue as a viable economic service
based community. Or if "we" will resolve ourselves to the fact that "we"
may well become the largest "bedroom" community in the state.

I am trying to understand why "ILLEGAL ALIENS" blame the United States
for their problems. Why do they wave the Mexican flag at us as if it
stands for a better way of life? Then too, is the problem "really"
illegal aliens, or, is the major problems Legal citizens hiring illegal
aliens?
What's going to happen when they fill up the United States with minimum
pay jobs? Who will pay the taxes so we can send billions of dollars a
year over seas feeding the poor and fighting their war?
Has anyone else noticed that it takes a whole lot more question marks
to right a letter now than it used to?

The GMU crews have filled the holes in the parking lot in the 500 block
east of Hill Avenue. Some of them were getting so big a guy was out
there the other day practicing his casting technique.
It'll be ready for dancing at the Summerfest Celebration.

It was a slow news day at Granny's this morning. Among other things,
the topic of Gene Fortner came up. Gene lived just across the alley from
us and everyone seemed to agree on that. Then, when I tried to remember
Gene's wife name,.. I couldn't. I can still see her standing in the
kitchen of Zinkes Cafe doing dishes. I'll never forget the bright red,
really really, bright red lip stick she wore. And, every once in a
while, I can still hear her laugh.
Communities could use a lot more folks like Gene Fortner and his wife.
Gosh I hope someone can share a bit more about them.

Happy Birthday -- Ronald Lunde
Friday the 24th of July 1942 Ronald Lunde celebrated his eighth
birthday. Rons mom baked a giant pink and white cake with eight lighted
candles. Guests were Larry Schweinfort, Richard and Dennis Loos, Frances
and James Kryzcho, Stewart Lundberg, Victor Johnson and Phyllis Gorder.

The article didn't say if everyone has a good time or not. Judging by
the participants, I gotta think they did. On the other hand, I'm pretty
sure a few of the guests get the Gazette. Maybe they would be willing to
let us know.

transferred a realty deed to Ira LaMont for lots 5, 6, 7, of blk. 54
Grafton for $1.

Speaking of birthdays. Eileen Torkelson celebrated her seventh birthday
on Monday the 2nd of March. Games were played at the after school event.
A birthday supper was served and Eileens green and white birthday cake
was lit up with seven candles.
Miss Laura Phalen, her teacher, Dorothy Swanson, Donna Mae Matcha, Lois
Sandvig, Carol Marie Watkins, Beverly Quist, Janet Rydholm and Marlene
Meilke all showed up for the celebration.

Happy Birthday Eileen, better late than never. I know it's too late
now, and, I'm sure it wouldn't have mattered anyway. However, I gotta
think Ron might have preferred the green and white cake instead of the
pink one.

I am hesitant to share the following "Rumor". I have decided to do so,
only with the intent that sharing it with "our" Gazette family - should
the "rumor" be true - that there may still be time to avert the Taylors
decision.

Why is it that people around here are so afraid of change? Or they
question the quests of others and feel there must be an alterior motive
behind their interests. Our community has done it again (according to
rumor), one of our newest residents is pulling up home roots and moving
to Grand Forks. Mr. Allan Taylor is leaving our humble village and
moving. He will apparantly still keep businesses in town, but the rumor
mill has made him want to remove his children from our education
factory.
I don't know if the other rumors that are going around are true or not,
but what about the benefit of the doubt.
Is it jealousy, skepticism, paranoia.....?
One just has to wonder. When will common sense come into play?
Who will be the next one run out of town?
Maybe this is just late night babble but maybe you can shed some light
on this. Maybe the people are right...You can fool some of the
people some of the time but you can't fool all the people all the time.

isn't nothing more than rumor. Second, if there is any validity to it, I
hope the business leaders of our community do everything possible to
avert it. And then of course is the sadd fact that one can't run away
from "rumors". They are often more vigorous in larger communities than
they are in small ones.
No matter what anyone "thinks", the Taylors have brought life back into
downtown Grafton. For that I am most appreciative.
The real fact is, they (rumors) are probably much easier to address in
small communities, simply because of the logistic of numbers.

Yesterdays Mothers Day dinner at MarketPlace on 8th was another super
event, as usual. We went to MarketPlace early with the idea we might
beat the crowd. Evidently, a couple hundred other folks were thinking
the same thing.
Surprisingly, everyone seemed to get in and seated within minutes. The
buffet menu was fabulous, from several items displayed at the salad bar
to a significant selection of deserts. Everything was absolutely
delicious.
Personally, I overindulged in the turkey & dressing, ham and shrimp
smothered in gravy. Once again Suzie and her very competent staff gave
folks from throughout the area reason to come to Grafton for Mothers Day
dinner.
We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful facility in our little
community.

Martha Stewart went to prison for listening to the advice of a person
she paid to give her advice. It was an illegal act, (I guess) she should
have known better, (I guess) and, should have been punished. (I suppose)
Catching a fish, out of season, is an illegal act. Get caught doing it
and you pay a fine lose your fishing equipment and fishing privileges
for years. But that's okay, because, it's an illegal act.
Stick a cigar, anyplace except your mouth, and it's an illegal act
also, or, at least it should be. But, that's okay too,... if your the
president. I wonder what part of "illegal" we don't understand?
For some reason, some politicians say that common sense says we can't
send every illegal alien back to Mexico. I'm wondering where those
common sense politicians were when "our" Border Patrol beat the
beegeebee's out of "our" Local Doctor? Or, I wonder where their common
sense was when they forced another Grafton citizen to stay in Canada.
Oops,... I must have gotten carried away. All I really wanted to say
was. What part of "illegal" don't we understand?

The Grafton States School (now referred to as the State Developmental
Center) provides maintenance for about 1,000 epileptic and mentally
deficient patients (presently referred to as Clients) Counties of the
state pay $15 a month per person. The school farms 1,240 acres according
to Dr. John G. LaMont, superintendent.

A supplement in the Sunday Grand Forks Herald recognized most of our
area individuals graduating in the class of 2006. At first, as I opened
it and looked at the first page full of pictures, of Grand Forks Central
High School Grads. I wondered why they were so few pictures.
As I scanned down the photos I wondered if the Barclay boy was someone
I should know, I also wondered about the lad named Gowan. The young lady
with the name Lerud reminded me of Ma Lerud and the fabulous monster
burgers she prepared at Lerud's Drive Inn. Then there was a girl named

Then,... I noticed the picture of a good looking young man named
Pederson. WOW, I thought, that's my fishing buddy Jarred Pederson. The
son of Jack and Ruth (Demester) Pederson. Then I was reminded of the
day, at Rocky Point, when Jarred and I went fishing with his Grandfather
Chuck Demester, and Jarreds uncle Lee Crook.
As I remember it, Jarred was having a bit of a problem (at first)
catching fish. Then, grandpa Chuck let Jarred use his very special
(retirement present) fishing rod. No sooner did Jarred drop his line in
the water than he hooked a 29 inch walleye. Then another big one, and
another until he had caught most of the limits for everyone in the boat.
I remember Chuck saying that day that Jarred was a pretty smart little
bugger. (catching fish the way he did) I'm not sure if he really knew
for sure then but I am sure he does today. So to does his Grandma Mert
and His Grandmother Audrey and Grandpa Jarl Pederson.
Jarred's picture is on that page because he is an "honor student". I'm
pretty sure Chuck knew it before the rest of us, but now we all do. And,
I'm pretty sure Jarred still has grandpa Chucks "special rod" and I hope
I will get a chance to watch him use it again this summer at Rocky
Point.
Oh yes, the rest of the graduating class was listed too, they just
didn't get their picture in the paper.
I think the class motto is especially appropriate as well. "We came

Yesterdays Mothers Day dinner at MarketPlace on 8th was another super
event, as usual. We went to MarketPlace early with the idea we might
beat the crowd. Evidently, a couple hundred other folks were thinking
the same thing.
Surprisingly, everyone seemed to get in and seated within minutes. The
buffet menu was fabulous, from several items displayed at the salad bar
to a significant selection of deserts. Everything was absolutely
delicious.
Personally, I overindulged in the turkey & dressing, ham and shrimp
smothered in gravy. Once again Suzie and her very competent staff gave
folks from throughout the area reason to come to Grafton for Mothers Day
dinner.
We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful facility in our little
community.

Martha Stewart went to prison for listening to the advice of a person
she paid to give her advice. It was an illegal act, (I guess) she should
have known better, (I guess) and, should have been punished. (I suppose)
Catching a fish, out of season, is an illegal act. Get caught doing it
and you pay a fine lose your fishing equipment and fishing privileges
for years. But that's okay, because, it's an illegal act.
Stick a cigar, anyplace except your mouth, and it's an illegal act
also, or, at least it should be. But, that's okay too,... if your the
president. I wonder what part of "illegal" we don't understand?
For some reason, some politicians say that common sense says we can't
send every illegal alien back to Mexico. I'm wondering where those
common sense politicians were when "our" Border Patrol beat the
beegeebee's out of "our" Local Doctor? Or, I wonder where their common
sense was when they forced another Grafton citizen to stay in Canada.
Oops,... I must have gotten carried away. All I really wanted to say
was. What part of "illegal" don't we understand?

The Grafton States School (now referred to as the State Developmental
Center) provides maintenance for about 1,000 epileptic and mentally
deficient patients (presently referred to as Clients) Counties of the
state pay $15 a month per person. The school farms 1,240 acres according
to Dr. John G. LaMont, superintendent.

A supplement in the Sunday Grand Forks Herald recognized most of our
area individuals graduating in the class of 2006. At first, as I opened
it and looked at the first page full of pictures, of Grand Forks Central
High School Grads. I wondered why they were so few pictures.
As I scanned down the photos I wondered if the Barclay boy was someone
I should know, I also wondered about the lad named Gowan. The young lady
with the name Lerud reminded me of Ma Lerud and the fabulous monster
burgers she prepared at Lerud's Drive Inn. Then there was a girl named
Morgan, although I was pretty sure I didn't know her family.

Although we have had more than our share of rain this spring. It's not
true that we have had more rain than you can shake a stick at. Just this
morning I took a broom stick outside and didn't have a bit of trouble
shaking it. Unfortunately, I did get very wet doing it.

It sounds like there might be a bunch of guys at the lake, trying to
catch their mother a fresh fish dinner. I hope they don't make mom clean
and cook'em too.

Speaking of cooking. I plan on taking my sweetheart out to MarketPlace
on 8th again this year. Over the years it's become somewhat of a
tradition for us to have Mother's Day dinner at MarketPlace in Grafton.
The food and selection is fabulous, and of course, Suzie and her
excellent staff do all the work.

Earlier Tami welcomed Susan Suda back home. For those that don't
remember. Susan is a Canadian citizen although she is married to a US
citizen and has been living and raising a family in Grafton for a number
of years. She has crossed the border dozens of times with a problem.
Unfortunately, the other day "our" Border Patrol decided some of her
paperwork wasn't "exactly" the way they thought it should be, so Susan
was forced to stay in Canada for a extended period of time until "our"
government determined she wouldn't be a threat to "our" countries
security.
I suspect it could well be the same folks that are ALLOWING, millions
of ILLEGAL ALIENS the benefit of "our" social services and drivers
licenses.
Anyway, Bill Kingsbury wanted to share his thoughts about Susan. >>>

If you lived by the Sunset home you would realize Susan was
gone. Many times on my way home Susan and all the kids were in the yard
and there would always be a friendly wave and a big smile. I have missed
that lately, It will be great to see her again. Bill <<< Thanks for

really sad that two, well known, very respected individuals such as
Susan Suda and Dr. Josh Omatunde must suffer such indignities when

While driving around town yesterday, I noticed the front lawn of one of
our local AGSCO rep's must have been visited by a neighborhood dog. It
would seem, too, that the dog must have been drinking roundup, or
something powerful enough to sterilize the grass in several spots.

Sorry to hear the Iversons are giving up the new car franchise. I
can sure understand it thou, the car manufactures are cutting their
margins on cars and you have to have alot of volume to make any
money. They are weeding out dealers in small markets, also charging
more and higher monthly fees for their computer services and ordering.
I remember when I was young there were 9 car dealers in town. My dad
started the Chrysler dealership in 1933, so there was a Chrysler dealer
in Grafton for 73 years and Ford was there before that, The world
sure changes in our short lifetime. Now people will have another
excuse to run to Grand Forks. And maybe now they'll wish they had
some of the old places back when gas gets to $4.00. Their Grand Forks
purchases won't be so cheap.
Chuck <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Chuck. Without
question it is another classic case or use it, or lose it. Thou hard to
calculate, it's a certainty that the lose of Iverson's new car
dealership will cost each and every citizen of Grafton more money to
live here. Also ironic, in all likelihood, is the fact that it will even
have a negative impact on "our" remaining new car dealership.
Put another way. "If we don't spend our money where we live.
Eventually, we will be force to live somewhere else." Or so it seems to
me.

The Grafton Senior citizens are sponsoring a 2 day, half day courses
on May 24 and 25 at the Senior citizen room in the armory and the hours
are from 1 to 5 each day. the cost of the course is $10.00 for both
days and you in return get a discount on your auto insurance from your
insurance company. You must contact them to find out how much. I
believe it is $100.00 to $200.00 for a period of 3 years. It is open
to anyone 50 and over. Anyone can come in Armory and register for this

I am saddened to report the passing of two Graftonites.
Edward Shereck age 74,
(December 30, 1931 - May 11, 2006)
died Thursday, May 11, 2006 at his home.
Services will be 10:30 am, Monday, May 15, 2006 at St. John The
Evangelist Catholic Church in Grafton with burial in St. John's
Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Barnes Family Funeral Service,
Henriksen-Kamrowski Chapel on Sunday from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm with a
5:00 pm Prayer Service and one hour prior to services in the church.
Edward Charles Shereck was born at Lankin, ND the son of Charles and
Lena (Kozojed) Shereck. He educated at Lankin. He entered the United
States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He returned to ND. On
April 23, 1956 he was united to Dorothy Votava Feltman in Grafton. They
made their home in Grafton where he worked as a car salesman for many
years, the Walsh County Highway Department and the State Highway
Department. He retired in 2005. He was a member of St. John's Catholic
Church, Catholic Workman Lodge, VFW Post #9367, Fraternal Order of the
Eagles and American Legion Post #41. Edward enjoyed fishing, working in
yard, cooking and watching NASCAR Racing and other sports. He really
enjoyed being outside and was often seen sitting in his chair enjoying
the beauty of the day around him. His grandchildren were also one of his
joys and he loved spending time with them.
Edward is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy; sons: Darrel
(Cynthia) Shereck of Bend, Oregon, Doug Shereck (Karen LaHaise) of
Grafton, North Dakota, Mike (Michelle) Shereck of Grafton, North Dakota
and Shane Shereck of Grafton, North Dakota; daughters: Debbie French
(Lon Burns) of Grafton, North Dakota and Karen (David) Schultz of Minot,
ND brother: Wilmer (Dorothy) Shereck of Portland, Oregon and sister:
Delores (Milton) Zahradka of Devils Lake, ND He was preceded in death by
his parents; granddaughter: Courtney French; sister, Mabel Kosobud and
brother, Raymond Shereck.
The Barnes Family Funeral Service, Henriksen-Kamrowski Chapel of Grafton
is assisting the family with arrangements.

The price of gas has dropped about a dime in the past several days. No
one seems to know for sure if that's because of the local "drilling"
going on in town.
Someone has been drilling holes in the cement in front of the former
Hvidsten building. The holes appear to be in the same area as the gas
and fuel pumps used to be when the Hvidsten family ran the facility. I
don't think they'll find enough oil or gas down there to make it
profitable to install an oil well drilling rig.
Unfortunately, there could well (pardon the pun) be enough oil and gas
there to make the hazardous waste people a pile of money removing it.

of town. Hagens Construction Co. started building the approach for the
new Spudnik potato handling equipment facility yesterday.

I mentioned birthdays the other day giving Denise reason to share the

Birthdays are fun. In our family we celebrate them for several
days. I had to smile when you mentioned counting the days, weeks, months
after a child is born. We have always celebrated our son's half birthday
(which coincidentally falls on Valentine's Day), so it was bound to be a
day of celebration anyway. Our son is over 28 and a half and it wasn't
until a couple of years ago that I met another person who celebrates
half birthdays in her family. We enjoyed a chuckle as though we shared a
secret. Our family has several silly traditions -- they're part of what
make us a family. Wouldn't it be fun to hear about family traditions
from some of your readers?

For most of the year, (winter) the Gazette goes out almost daily.
Starting sometime next week, the Gazette's predictability will become
even more unpredictable.
For most of the summer we can be found at Arnesen's Rocky Point Resort.
Where I will be continuing my, ongoing, summer research project. Namely
how long can a leach stay on a fish hook til it gets eaten by a giant
walleye. (normally they die first)
We will return home from time to time to send out "updates", and, of
course we will be home during Grafton's Summerfest.
If anyone is looking for a fantastic place to fish, spend a vacation,
and enjoy the lake and the great outdoors. I highly recommend Arnesen's
Rocky Point on Minnesota's Lake of the Woods.

couple days. The Grafton Senior citizens are sponsoring a 2 day, half
day courses on May 24 and 25 at the Senior citizen room in the armory
and the hours are from 1 to 5 each day. The cost of the course is
$10.00 for both days and in return, you get a discount on your auto
insurance from your insurance company. You must contact them to find
out how much. I believe it is $100.00 to $200.00 for a period of 3
years. It is open to anyone 50 and over. Anyone can come in and
register for this and there will be coffee and goodies. So for doing
this for me, I thank you very much and keep up the good work on the

I wouldn't want anyone to think it's rained so much around here that
they shouldn't come for the Summerfest festivities. Rumor does have it,
however, that John Deere has started putting life jackets and a trolling
motor in all their new tractors.

If, the rain continues much longer. I plan on starting to build an
"ARK". This time however, I am going to leave them dad-burned skeeter
bugs off the boat.

Birthdays, are always a special time. When life begins, our birthday is
remembered first in days, then weeks,.. followed by months - split in
half. Then for a period of time it seems to be "okay" to celebrate them
in five or even ten year increments. Then, almost all of a sudden, about
the age of 90 or so, we revert back to celebrating the day of our birth
by the year again. And, I might add, rightfully so.
Anyway, BettyLou sent the following note regarding the anniversary of
her mother Ethel Brekke's birth.... the 98th one.
>>> Hi, just a note to let you know that my mom, Ethel Brekke,
has a birthday coming up on May 12th. She will be 98 years old.
She has been a resident of the Lutheran Sunset Home since last July.
My sister Ruth and I had a small birthday party for her last Sunday and
it was attended by the special people in her life. Mom looks great
and is doing so well. The care at the Sunset Home is wonderful. The
entire staff goes out of their way to accommodate the residents and
their family. Grafton is fortunate to have such a facility.
The town looks so good and I was happy to see the new business' that
have and are opening. Keep up the good work. BettyLou (Brekke)

special day. I too believe we are especially lucky to have a facility of
such high standards. We are also extremely fortunate to have such a

If you happened to venture outside Wednesday afternoon, you "might"
have noticed the wind seemed to have a air about it. No-one seemed to be
able to identify or associate a specific smell going thru town on the
fairly stiff breeze out of Canada.
As we drove north, to check out it's source, about the same time we
reached the bridge on that end of town. It became apparent that the odor
was spewing out of every crack in Newmans Booze Plant for auto's.
Believe me, even after a full buffet of boiled cabbage, an egg salad
sandwich, a hunk of limberger and a quart of butter milk, I couldn't
conjure up a smell like that. Someone should bottle it and send it down
to the Mexican border. I doubt anyone would want to cross the border
through that stuff.

not find the original mention of him.
In some ways it is good to be kind of old, you remember things
others haven't even heard of. Who is Don that answered your history
question? I would love to meet him, we might have a lot in common. He
may be looking for some one like me to put in his will.
I knew Joe Piewarr very well. I knew him from when I worked for Chris
Anholt at the Fairway store on 5th street. He and his wife lived behind
us on Wakeman ave. ( 40 north wakeman ) we saw his ducks and geese swim
down the river every day.
He wasn't really dirty Don, he just didn't have the time, or
water, to have a shinny head like Gary Moe. By the way, we didn't have
sewer or running water either, just an old out door john.
Joe and his wife had a big garden and sold produce. He worked
for a man by the name of Frank Davis. Frank was a big gardener. He was
also a big gambler. He lived in a building behind my store on 5th. Card
games went on there every week, big games. It was rather rough
looking in there but the games were known far and wide.
When Frank died he had a very big funeral and a funeral parade down
Hill ave. It was one of the biggest funerals and parades we will ever
see in Grafton. I am very curious to hear how many "oldies" remember
that day. Thanks Don for bringing back a great memory.
Wally <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing Wally. Don and his
younger brother Gary also lived on Wakeman avenue, just north of the
bridge, with their mother Gladys Johnson. It is a small world after all.
Aren't memories wonderful?

The Westside Drive Inn opened up Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 pm. We drove
by a few times and watched as more and more cars pulled up to the
electronic "outercom" to give their orders.
Finally, my willpower gave way to the crazy sounds coming out of my
stomach. I pulled up to the speaker and there it was. The first item on
the menu,.. the WagonMaster. I didn't have to read any further. I told
Pat, order me one of those, a basket of potato gem and a medium milk.
Pat ordered a Mac salad, with two forks, a burger and sprite.
As the young lady was reading back our order, "for accuracy", I
realized the voice coming through the speaker was that of our
granddaughter Jennifer Hartje. As she finished repeating our order, Pat
replied thank you Jenny, followed by Jenny's response of "thank you
Gramma".
Our order was delivered within a few short minutes by another pretty
young lady, Amber Evenson. The food was fantastic as was the service.
For some reason eating out at the West Side Drive Inn a drive inn, makes
one feel young again.

One of the units in the C&L Manor housing complex was struck by
lightning Tuesday afternoon. Reports are that the lightning bolt blew a
hole in the roof and raised more heck and caused more damage than a pack
of squirrels on a nut hunt.
It is also believed that a young man working on lawns nearby, was
knocked down by that same lightning bolt. Early observations are that
the youth hasn't obtained serious injuries although he was being held
overnight in the hospital, just to be certain.

I am surprised at the number of requests for the picture of Jeff's
paddle fish. Some folks, it seems, have heard of paddle fish and think
they are really UGLY creatures, although I'm guessing other paddle fish
might argue that concept. Then there's those that haven't even heard of
paddle fish let alone see one. That's the group Jeff's picture can best
relate to.

Speaking of Jeff. Wednesday, May 10 is the day Jeff celebrates the
anniversary of his first spanking. Dr. Les Eaton had the "privilege" of
that event. I'm not sure, but I think I was the second one,...and
third,...and fourth etc, etc, etc.
Jeff started running, almost before he could crawl. By the time he was
3, he could take apart a trike faster than I could put it together. When
Jeff was 7 he could put a bike together almost as fast as he could tear
it apart, and, by the time he was 15 he was overhauling V/8 motors so he
could make bald tires for swings in the park. (so he said)
Then, one day, Jeff decided to channel all that energy into obtaining
and raising a fantastic family, volunteering copious amounts of time and
energy helping family members, and members of his community.
Happy birthday Jeffrey Gary Moe, you have given your mother and me
significant reason to be proud. We love you very much and hope you can
enjoy the anniversary of your birth, as much as your mother and I. Dad
& Mom

Speaking of family. I am extremely pleased with the participation of
the Gazette family with this years Grafton High School / American Legion
Baseball fund raising program.
"Our" Gazette families participation amounted to "almost" 25 percent of
the total calendar draw contributions. For that I must say "thank you",
to each and every member of the Gazette family, from the bottom of my
heart.
The Grafton Baseball Board would also like to thank EVERYONE for
helping support Grafton H. S. / American Legion Baseball programs.

The Westside Drive Inn opened up Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 pm. We drove
by a few times and watched as more and more cars pulled up to the
electronic "outercom" to give their orders.
Finally, my willpower gave way to the crazy sounds coming out of my
stomach. I pulled up to the speaker and there it was. The first item on
the menu,.. the WagonMaster. I didn't have to read any further. I told
Pat, order me one of those, a basket of potato gem and a medium milk.
Pat ordered a Mac salad, with two forks, a burger and sprite.
As the young lady was reading back our order, "for accuracy", I
realized the voice coming through the speaker was that of our
granddaughter Jennifer Hartje. As she finished repeating our order, Pat
replied thank you Jenny, followed by Jenny's response of "thank you
Gramma".
Our order was delivered within a few short minutes by another pretty
young lady, Amber Evenson. The food was fantastic as was the service.
For some reason eating out at the West Side Drive Inn a drive inn, makes
one feel young again.

One of the units in the C&L Manor housing complex was struck by
lightning Tuesday afternoon. Reports are that the lightning bolt blew a
hole in the roof and raised more heck and caused more damage than a pack
of squirrels on a nut hunt.
It is also believed that a young man working on lawns nearby, was
knocked down by that same lightning bolt. Early observations are that
the youth hasn't obtained serious injuries although he was being held
overnight in the hospital, just to be certain.

I am surprised at the number of requests for the picture of Jeff's
paddle fish. Some folks, it seems, have heard of paddle fish and think
they are really UGLY creatures, although I'm guessing other paddle fish
might argue that concept. Then there's those that haven't even heard of
paddle fish let alone see one. That's the group Jeff's picture can best
relate to.

Speaking of Jeff. Wednesday, May 10 is the day Jeff celebrates the
anniversary of his first spanking. Dr. Les Eaton had the "privilege" of
that event. I'm not sure, but I think I was the second one,...and
third,...and fourth etc, etc, etc.
Jeff started running, almost before he could crawl. By the time he was
3, he could take apart a trike faster than I could put it together. When
Jeff was 7 he could put a bike together almost as fast as he could tear
it apart, and, by the time he was 15 he was overhauling V/8 motors so he
could make bald tires for swings in the park. (so he said)
Then, one day, Jeff decided to channel all that energy into obtaining
and raising a fantastic family, volunteering copious amounts of time and
energy helping family members, and members of his community.
Happy birthday Jeffrey Gary Moe, you have given your mother and me
significant reason to be proud. We love you very much and hope you can
enjoy the anniversary of your birth, as much as your mother and I. Dad
& Mom

Speaking of family. I am extremely pleased with the participation of
the Gazette family with this years Grafton High School / American Legion
Baseball fund raising program.
"Our" Gazette families participation amounted to "almost" 25 percent of
the total calendar draw contributions. For that I must say "thank you",
to each and every member of the Gazette family, from the bottom of my
heart.
The Grafton Baseball Board would also like to thank EVERYONE for
helping support Grafton H. S. / American Legion Baseball programs.

Sunday afternoon we, my sweetie and I, accompanied by our eldest
granddaughter Tiffany, had pizza at Graftons "new" Pizza Hut. From the
second we walked in the door we were impressed, to say the least. We
were met at the door by a friendly young lady with a warm smile that
displayed "welcome" from ear to ear.
As we walked across the "Hut" the new carpet, woodwork and lighting
provided a display of a "cheery" feeling of freshness one appreciates
when eating out. The salad bar looked even more appealing filled with,
right from the garden, fresh looking fruits and vegetables, than when I
watched it being moved into the "Hut" several days earlier.
The pizza was great, the service was fantastic and we couldn't have
been more pleased to have "our" Pizza Hut, back in operation.

The housing market in Grafton is still going crazy. If your thinking
of moving to town, and, your looking for a really unique beautiful,
super clean well maintained home on a large lot in a fantastic
neighborhood. Drive by the home at 906 Western Avenue.
The homes list of owners, including the present ones, is full of some
of Graftons most distinguished citizens.

The other day I mentioned a group of Mrs. Horners piano "students" and
received the following note in that regard. >>>
Mrs. Horner would not be proud of my accomplishments on the piano,
but we both tried. My husband and I are contemplating a trip to N.Dak.
this summer, and wondered how the gas prices are. We are paying $3.40
today, and it goes up a couple pennies daily here in California. I enjoy
the Gazette, thank you. Theresa Altendorf Mathis. <<< Thank you from
caring and sharing Theresa. I'm pretty sure you will be surprised at how
"our" little city has changed in the past several months. Please don't
let the price of gas stop you from coming home.
I haven't checked in the past few minutes, but the last time I looked
gas was around $2.85 and going down in Skeeterville.

I received the following response to the question regarding Joe
Piewarr. >>>
You asked if anyone remembered a man called Peewhyer.......(SP)
I remember him living in a shack in the back of Schrank's
Trailer Court next to the railroad bridge. I don't remember much about
him other than he appeared very dirty. I once was throwing rocks at
ducks on the river from the bridge on Wakeman Ave., when I struck one in
the head killing it. When my Mom found out about it, she asked around
and found out the duck belonged to Mr. Peewhyer. I had to take the duck
over to his shack and tell him I'd killed it. I don't remember what he
said, but I think the walk over there was as bad a punishment as I could
have gotten.
I remember my mother taking my brother and I to our first
funeral. As I remember it; it was for Mrs. Peewhyer. It was held in the
Pentecostal Church across from the Chase School. Mr Peewhyer came in
after the services had started and sat in the back of the church. Just
as the service was about to end, he stood up from the pew and took one
final look at the woman in the casket; and then left the church. I
remember thinking that I was glad he had came. <<< Thanks a million for
caring and sharing Don. I gotta think someone could write a interesting
book on the "happenings" on and around the Wakeman Avenue bridge.

The front windows of the Cafe Au Livre in the former Penneys building
is still shielded by paper with large "OPEN SOON" written across it.
Soon, I'm beginning to understand, is closer to sometime, than a time.

Earlier today, I sent out a picture of my son Jeff holding the 66 pound
paddle fish he caught this weekend. I didn't send it to everyone as I
wasn't sure how many real died in the wool fish hunters are our there.
If anyone is interested in seeing what a 5½ foot, 66 pound paddle fish
actually looks like. I would be happy, and so would Jeff, to send you
the picture.
I probably should also clarify that I "may" have suggested I had
something to do with it's capture. That "may" not have been true.
Anyway, Lee Bratlie has also "hunted" the prehistoric paddle fish on
several occasions. He sent the following after receiving my note with
the picture of Jeff holding his fish. >>>
Hey, congratulations on the trip!!! I'm sure it was planned with much
thought and anticipation!! I'll bet packing was a chore, what to bring,
what to leave home, will we miss it, do we need it, probably not, but
lets take it with anyways, so much to plan for!!! Then the trip out
there, filled with the anticipation of catching a prehistoric fish that
most people in this country don't even know exists, and most of those
that do know it exists have never seen one up close and personal. And
the thoughts that for all the paddlefish tags sold, only 1,000 lucky
souls would have the opportunity to catch such a prize each year!!! And
once on the road, who should drive, who should sleep, are you tired, no,
how about you, no me either, and on and on, all the way across this
great state!! Then getting out there and the endless casting, jerking,
reeling, then casting again, wondering if there were any fish in the
river, and if there were, where are they? And then the breaks to eat,
drink, and absorb the beautiful scenery of western North Dakota, and to
share a cold sandwich and drink between father and son, and some laughs.
Many laughs. And to reminisce about other times in this great outdoors,
at other locations, with equally great people, for equally great
reasons. And the thoughts of, "remember this?" and "remember that?" and
all the other things that make a father and son outing so special. And
the thoughts that this is what memories are made of, and aren't we lucky
to be sharing this between the two of us?
Oh, and by the way, congratulations on the fish. <<< Thanks a million
for caring and sharing Lee.

Here it is, the last day of spring cleanup and Laddie is nowhere to be
found. The community GMU is to be commended for the wonderful job the
did on this years cleanup.

Doesn't Spring clean-up time make you feel good? Why?.... I started
with a pile including 2 old fishing rods, many computer monitors and
parts, 2 bikes, 1 stroller, some drapes, 1 canister vac and some tree
trimmings. Looking out this morning I'm down to the trimmings, the
stroller and oddly the hose for the canister vac which I'm sure they'll
be back for. It makes a person feel good to know that even his junk has
some sort of value HA!

I regret to say that the following message will be going out in next
weeks Walsh County Record.
Heritage Sales & Leasing, Inc. of Grafton will be dropping the Ford,
Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep franchises in the near future. After 32 years i
the new vehicle business, we will become an independent used vehicle
dealer offering all makes and models. We will also continue a full
service repair shop.
With the slow economy in the past tear and expenses for new vehicle
franchises going up with margins continuing to decrease, we felt we had
to make this business decision. We want to thank all of our loyal
customers that have been with us these past 32 years. We will still be
able to service most makes and models of automobiles and have quality
used cars, trucks, suvs and mini vans available for sale. We will still
give the same great service we have in the past.

I find it somewhat ironic, in light of the announcement of the
termination of "our" local Ford and Chrysler dealership, not to long
after the lose of "our" Hallmark store, coupled with the premise, "use

Heritage Sales & Leasing, Inc. of Grafton will be dropping the Ford,
Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep franchises in the near future. After 32 years i
the new vehicle business, we will become an independent used vehicle
dealer offering all makes and models. We will also continue a full
service repair shop.
With the slow economy in the past tear and expenses for new vehicle
franchises going up with margins continuing to decrease, we felt we had
to make this business decision. We want to thank all of our loyal
customers that have been with us these past 32 years. We will still be
able to service most makes and models of automobiles and have quality
used cars, trucks, suvs and mini vans available for sale. We will still
give the same great service we have in the past.

I found it difficult to type the previous message. I would like to
thank the Iverson's for their numerous significant contributions to
"our" community, and the entire area. I am thankful they have decided to
continue doing business, all-be-it, in a slightly different capacity in

I find it somewhat ironic, in light of the announcement of the
termination of "our" local Ford and Chrysler dealership, not to long
after the lose of "our" Hallmark store, coupled with the premise, "use
it, or lose it". That the following "message" was distributed by "our"

The Armory is getting a new coat of something rainproof. The marquee
on the corner says the armory can be rented for ten dollars ($10) an
hour. You can't hardly rent an outhouse for a picnic that cheap.

I see someone is either redoing the cement blocks on Heartland Eye
Care, OR, they're doing a terrible job of trying to break into the
place. It's difficult to tell from the road. I'm not sure if it's
because of my glasses or the dust.

1969. I should have included Harlan L. Brekke in that group as well.
Harlans harvested tons per acre averaged 16.59 tons on 75 acres.

interesting. The Readers Digest Version is Sue wrote about the many
things that "relate" to small town ND. Like how fast one can drive
across town, or everyone knows everyone, etc, etc. I particularly
appreciated the last few paragraphs, and would like to share them with

The following message is the very latest word on "little" Ben. >>>
Family and Friends,
Sorry the updates are few and far between...but Julie and I have
struggled to find any free time. The second cycle of chemotherapy has
really taken its toll on Ben. His appetite has fallen off, and often
times when he does eat, he is not able to keep it down. We have been
giving him anti-nausea medication very regularly.
Ben's blood counts were low on this past Friday (4-28-06)...so he
received a blood transfusion that evening. That was the third
transfusion that Ben has received. Donating blood on a regular
basis is not something I have done. I feel guilty about that now. If you
are able, please donate regularly.
Ben is much more demanding than normal. We have found that we
basically need to have one person (Julie) able to devote all her
attention to Ben at all times. That means a second person (Chris,
Grandma Kim, Grandma Vernie) needs to be around to tend to Maria's
needs.
We are hopeful that Ben's blood counts are high enough to remain on
schedule with his chemo treatments. The third cycle is supposed to start
Friday, May 12th. That cycle will consist of two drugs infused on
Friday, and one drug on Saturday and Sunday.
Ben has his first tooth, and he has started to scoot around. He doesn't
crawl. He either rolls or sits upright and just scoots.

On this date in 1967 the low temperature was 5 (five) degrees. Brrrrr.
It doesn't sound like the next few days will be good ones for airing
out bed sheets.

After being open just two days, several folks could be seen leaving
Pizza Hut hungry Tuesday around dinner time. (lunch for you folks south
of St. Paul) It seems they were experiencing some type of equipment
problems. I didn't hear exactly what they problem was, they may have
had trouble keeping the Canadian bacon out of "our" country sausage.

Oscar Lauzon stopped in Granny's Tuesday morning for breakfast and a
daily dose of bull dung. We tried everything we could to pry some his
"Valley City" money out of billfold,... to no avail.

Grafton city municipal utility crews are busy picking up residents
residue from this years spring cleaning. One noticeable change, this
year from last, is the lack of exercise equipment in the piles. I'm not
sure if that means more folks are actually using the stuff, or, that
they all got thrown away during last years cleanup.
Anyway, this year seems to be "the year of the mattress". It seems
there are discarded mattresses, almost every other block. I'm not sure
what that means anymore. I know back in the 50's and early 60's, when
the dump ground was out by Fair Oaks Golf Course. Joe Larson would have
used a few of them to "insulate" his caretaker shack, and, one or two
inside to "sit" on.

Sometimes it's fun sharing rumors, then again, sometimes it's not. The
latest rumor is one of those not-so-much-fun ones. It seems, according
to several local folks, we will not have a local Ford / Chrysler
Automobile Dealership in town much longer.
That certainly is not good news for Grafton nor for those that have
done their new car business there for many years. Often when I hear a
rumor, whether it is true or not isn't really important. This one
is,...to me, and "our" entire community.
Time,... if no-one else, will tell whether this rumor has substance.

It happened in 1968. Norman and Rueben Russum were listed among the top
7 sugarbeet growers in the Drayton Factory District. They harvested 150
acres and averaged 16.67 tons per acre.
Arnold Barclay was in the top three in the East Grand Forks district
harvesting 115 acres averaging 17.21 tons per acre.

The most gratifying parts of doing the Gazette is hearing from folks it
goes out to. This note comes from a lady I haven't seen or talked to for
a long,...long time.

one for another day.
Unfortunately, I will miss the festivities in Grafton this summer. Our
daughter Jennifer is getting married in Los Angeles. After that, my
wallet and suitcase will have to stay home for a while.
In the meantime, I am glad to hear that Pat is well. I also hope Grafton
continues to grow and prosper.

Miss Muriel McAulay left Sunday for St. Paul where she attends Derham
high school at the college of St. Catherine. She visited over the Easter
holidays with her parents Mr. and Mrs. John McAulay.

It's apparent that the individual that wrote "open soon" on the paper in
front of that facility has a different meaning of soon than Webster.

keep up with what is going on at "home".

Yesterday I mentioned how wonderful the staff was at Grafton Unity
Medical Center and how well they took care of Pat during her short visit
there over the weekend.
If we would have had to go to Grand Forks, and, had everyone that came
to visit Pat at Unity in Grafton would have gone to Grand Forks. It
would have been 1270 vehicle miles,.. or more.
Gosh I'm glad we have such a wonderful Medical facility in Grafton.

As I read your note of appreciation for Unity Hospital, I felt
slightly ashamed of myself for not thanking the Unity staff in a more
public way for their recent care of my father, Wayne Siewert. You may
have seen his picture in the Record recently during physical therapy
awareness week. Of course, various members of my family and I thanked
staff members individually, but public recognition is also necessary.
My father experienced a rare condition (blood clot on his spine) on
November 30th and has been hospitalized since that time. After being in
facilities in Grand Forks and Fargo, he spent two weeks in Unity. His
progress was remarkable, and I attribute a significant portion of that
progress to the personalized care he received. Kelly (Nelson) LaBonte
was a classmate of my brothers; Anita Zavalney's aunt is my dad's
sister, etc. There are not six-degrees of separation in this community.
So I offer a heartfelt and public "Thank You" to everyone at Unity
Medical for their care of my father and for their care of others; for
their good natures and their professionalism; and for being here in
Grafton.
My dad is now in Grand Forks at the rehab making further progress.

planning on attending the Nat'l. Conference in San Antonio, Tex. in

shortly before Nessa had to go to Altru by Grafton's Volunteer Valley
Ambulance Service.

Schrank & family May 4th at the Grafton High School gym

energetic young folks pulling, praying and cheering for Nessa.

The Hut for making Pizza opened Sunday for all the folks that helped
rebuild it, and I understand the help that will serve the res of us in
the future. I haven't heard if the "volunteers" (Firefighters) that
risked their lives putting out the fire that ultimately gave the folks
that rebuilt the Pizza Hut gainful employment were invited to the
opening. If not, they will probably be invited on another "special"
occasion.
Anyway, for of us that have been waiting for a 'once around the
kitchen' house special. Today is the day the Grafton Pizza Hut opens for
business.

As I drove by the strand theater the other day, I noticed the marquee
has been redesigned again by something higher than it is. I'm starting
to wonder if that marquee hasn't been hit more than the urinal in the
boys bathroom.
More than once I've wondered why there isn't a "low clearance" sign on
the leading edge of it. (the Marquee I mean)

Speaking of signs, the opening in the spring sign at the Westside drive
Inn, as I understand it, means May 9th. I'm still guessing the for sale
sign along side it, means the whole place is for sale,.... anytime.

The Sign on the corner out front of the bp gas station continues to
generate positive comments. Keith sent the following. >>>

Your notice of the sympathy sign at Jet Oil was right on. I thought the
very same thing. I do not know who is sponsoring these messages, but
whoever it is, their heart is in the right place. Connie and her sister
worked for me at the washplant in Minto, for several seasons, as potato
graders. They were both excellent workers and fun to have around. Their
pot luck Mexican dinners are still legend! My sympathies to her family.

the following message. Gary:
When I drove by the sign at Jet Oil, I have to admit that I wondered
who the "Jimenez" family was.
Although I was not personally acquainted with Mrs. LaHaise
and Mr. Kingsbury, both individuals certainly had name recognition for
me. Jimenez, however, didn't ring a bell.
After reading your comments in the Gazette, I was immediately
reminded of a cliche that I grew up with. My beloved (and departed)
dad used to tell me when I was acting "uppity" that "Jesus is no
respecter of persons." At the time I neither grasped nor cared what
he meant, and I would usually roll my eyes with the typical
disdain of a teenager who was going to really "make something" of my
life. I have been fortunate, however, to have opportunities to see
for myself that these words of wisdom from Dad were simply the truth.
Although my daughter Grace is only 7 years old - I hope that I am able
to pass on the same truth to her as she grows up.
My Pastor said recently . . . "The ground is level at the foot of
the cross." Whether we are rejoicing and praising, or in the throes
of despair, it matters not to our Heavenly Father what our worldly
accomplishments and possessions may be. He sees every person's
heart for what it contains, and what it strives to accomplish in His
kingdom.
Obviously those responsible for the sign of condolence at Jet Oil
have grasped that truth. Your comments served as a reminder to me
that earthly crowns have no value in eternity. I needed
that reminder - and I thank you for giving that to me today!

Being an outsider looking in, 50 weeks a year, I also believe
Grafton is a great little community. Largely because of the people that
reside there. Don't underestimate the influence Gary Moe has on the
character of Grafton. Your attitudes and beliefs are infectious, or so
seems to me. Bill Shininger <<< Thanks a million for caring and sharing
Bill. I am proud of "our" little community, and, the people in it. We
have "our" faults to be sure, but "our" intentions are honest and pure.
I firmly believe, "I am not entitled to anything, until I've given my
all."

It's funny how fast news spreads. Friday evening, Pat started
experiencing chest pains. So, we headed straight for Unity Medical
Center in Grafton. (Some of you may remember I've mentioned how
important I believe Unity is to the Area.)
Anyway, after a thorough examination and a overnight stay at Unity
Hospital, I am very pleased to say that she is feeling better now,
everything seems to be ok and Pat is back home with Sami and me. Am I
ever happy that we have such a wonderful facility in "our" little
community.
Of course, had it been more serious, we would have went to a larger
hospital. (after stopping at Unity) Fortunately, that wasn't necessary
this time.

Speaking of family. Please welcome Robert LaBonte, Judy Suda, Katherine
LaBonte, and Barbara Bolz to the Gazette family tree. As always, I would
really appreciate hearing from new members so I know if the Gazette is
getting thru or not. I still haven't heard from several of the latest

Speaking of families, rumor has it that the Arnesen's will be adding a
couple fishing guides to their Rocky Point Resort this summer. I
understand one will be using "little Eb's" cradle and Mark will be
training the other to hunt Northerns off the reefs. CONGRATULATIONS !!!!
