Todays edition is a tad long. I felt the "FAIR TRADE" message on the bottom
of the Gazette should go out today.

LEISTIKOW PARK:
Adverse weather conditions the past few days has taken it's toll on the park
decorations. Last night I counted 26 displays without a direct link to the
Grafton Municipal Power Department.
I'm not sure how many "power plays" the hockey team has scored so far this
year. However, it could be such a thing, as every time one is scored. They shut
off a display so they can afford to give free power to the lucky "power play"
goal winners. At any rate, it's still a very pretty drive through the park.
I noticed the small WDAY/Z display is also dark. I'm guessing their using all
their resources to broadcast the Fighting Sioux hockey games.

SPORTS:
Speaking of sports. Did anyone watch the Vikings game Sunday? Did they really
lose?.....again? I don't know much about football. However, this morning (I
think) one of the guys that does. Mentioned something about the Vikings losing
because Kleinsasser has a tight end. I had to agree. A tight end would slow
anyone down. And so it goes.

I'm wondering how long the Grand Cities Columbia Mall can afford to give away
ten bucks every time the Sioux score a point. Just Saturday alone eight people
were given a $10 reason for "shopping the mall".
I did notice that several guys scored in Saturdays hockey Sioux Wayne State
hockey game. I also noticed several more "scored" assists.
In case you haven't, I did, no-one,..... absolutely no-one, on the Minnesota
Vikings team "score" an assist. Could that be their problem? Their not getting
enough assists. Then on the other hand, maybe the Scandinavians aren't winning
because the Mall of America isn't giving away ten bucks every time they score.

I did receive a comment on the trip three local gentlemen took to "Hooters."

I have to admit, signing it, the Guy With The Glasses sure adds mystery to the
note. I met "The guy with the glasses" at Market Place on Eighth Saturday
evening. I had the opportunity to ask him what he thought a fourth person might
have expected. He looked at me, then he looked at Pat. Then he looked at me and
said something like, "I don't know for sure, I just know I still have the
plant."

The latest snowfall has been removed from all downtown streets. I'm always
impressed with the efficiency of our small community work force. Snowplows had
bladed virtually every residential street within a few hours,..... of driveways
being shovelled. I remember O.C. Hoy, as Graftons Street Superintendent, once
telling his crew. "Don't worry about plowing up that ridge in front of
everyones driveway. It's a hell of lot easier for them to shovel their driveway
than it is for us to shovel the streets." Needless to say, O.C. wasn't a
favorite Street Superintendent.
This morning I watched as Dewayne Knudson came by our house with a motor
grader and wing. Dewayne handled that large piece of equipment like a surgeon
uses a scalpel. He rounded the corner by our house without slowing down a bit.
As he passed our driveway, he was moving fast enough so that the ridge
"feathered out" rather than ridged up. It wasn't just the best he could do. It
was the best that anyone could do. Thanks Dewayne. Our city maintenance
department was up and running this morning, when some folks were going to bed.
They have always done that. They've always done a super job. Unfortunately,
sometimes, it's too easy to overlook the effort they put into making our
community better and look presentable. Thanks GMU, from someone who really
cares about the job you do. And most specifically appreciates the work each and
every one of you do, for our community. I'm pretty sure Melvin Durand also
participates in the snow hauling process. That too, must put additional strain
on city management. Right Melvin. ==================================

it's especially appropriate since the birth of "our" new twins".

I'm in the midst of a research project of sorts. When completed I'll report
the results. The project is a fairly simple one, in a nutshell. I'm checking
to see how long it will take. To fill the cab of a white Ford truck facing east
with snow. The drivers side window of the truck has been vandalised, adding
value to the research project. Once the cab fills up with snow. I will test the
ignition system for shorts. (the electrical kind)

CHRISTMAS SALES:
In case anyone is wondering. I understand JC PENNEY is planning on NOT having
50 percent off one day next week. Just today I received a special "Just for me"
$10 savings certificate. It is a special holiday gift for me. Because I'm a
special "valued" customer, they want to THANK ME, by giving me a $10 savings
certificate. And, they say, I have 10 days to spend it. There is a few items
the "savings certificate" does not apply too. Over 30, to be exact. AND, if I
should receive the "mailer" late. All I have to do is bring it to the JCPenney
store and they will honor all advertised sales. Now thats a statement, if I
ever heard one.
If I remember right. I bought a couple shirts from Norv Elbert when he managed
JCPenneys back when diapers were made of cloth and shirts were made of cotton.

Americans are having trouble with the fighting Sioux moniker. In light of the
Sioux "win / loss" record. What must the Scandinavians be thinking about the

According to an Associated Press story. A Winona, Minn area Catholic School
is missing a "large sum of money". The money, is missing, that was the findings
of an audit. Church officials are saying "It may have been stolen". The article
doesn't mention if anyone bothered to ask God if he has it.

The last word in my "little" Webster Dictionary is ZYMURGY. It's an
interesting word. Meaning the chemistry of fermentation, as applied in
brewing.
I expect both Johns on my list, already knew that. (being in the

Would the person that replaced the small gas tank on my snowblower, with a
large one. Please return it. Sometime between last year and this year. The gas
tank on my snowblower got larger. Last year, I could fill it up and blow snow
all over the neighborhood. Until the snowblower ran out of gas. This year, I
run out of gas, and, the snowblower is still half full. Darned if I know why.

Our street department has already hauled all of last nights snowfall off our
main streets. I bet you folks in Phoenix can't say that. Several Shivercity
folks have already been stuck in snowbanks. You Phoenixonians can't say that
either.

they missed us, the weather, or simply tore too man pages off their calendar.

keeps the "good eaters".

I have received several notes, all positive, about Leistikow Park. Two
contained the mention of the parks "canoe display" and they thought the change
in direction was a benefit. I also agree with the change. I also received a
nice note from Wally DeSautel regarding the Parks "Live Nativity". With minimal

before. It was the live manger seen, singing christmas carols. I stopped and

I owe you a big one. I did not know that Gordon Stark was in the hospital. I
knew that he was very sick. Because of your reminder, I went right to the
hospital with the annual check that I give to Gordy for the Salvation Army. I

You play a big part in our community Gary. My sincere thanks to you and Pat

I'm one of the haven't folks in town.
If the kind of response and service Mid-Continent TV is affording some of
it's customers. Was offered by a local eating establishment. It would soon not
have customers. If people purchased a vehicle from a local Auto dealership, and
received the kind of service Mid-Continent is providing some of it's patrons.
Those folks would be driving a different type of vehicle.
Somewhere in our community, is an entity responsible for monitoring the
reliability of our cable television provider. I sure hope, with regards to Mid-
Continents last conversion venture that entity give Mid-Continent a failing
grade. ==================================

The "Twins" (Grandchildren 11 and 12) will be baptized today. Jadrian and
Tyler are already 30 days old. Jadrian (the oldest by a minute) still appears
to be the biggest. Probably by as much as 4 or 5 ounces. They were scheduled
for an official weigh-in this past Tuesday. Inclement weather postponed that
idea. Until a few days ago. Jadrian was the blue ribbon drinker.
Lately however, Tyler has become the family guzzler. He has always held the
trophy for dispensing gas. (from both ends) If I haven't mention it before.
They sure are cute little stinkers. ==================================
EDITOR URGED FARMERS TO PAY MERCHANTS:
The farmers who asked merchants to wait on them until wheat was worth fifty
cents a bushel should now meet their engagement and not keep the merchants
waiting longer. What may go higher and it may swing back again into the
forties. At any rate merchants must have money at once or they will have to
cease giving credit any further.
Walsh County does not need to experience hard times this year if every man
will pay his debts according to his ability. With an average of 14 to 15
bushels of wheat to the acre we are far better off than most states in the
union.

I read the above article from the Record this morning. Interesting,... I
thought, the above article indicates to me a mutual bond between merchant and
farmer. It fortifies my belief that our economy is totally interdependent on
both the urban and rural facets in our land.
It gives some indication, the more things change,...the more they stay the
same. Suggesting that farmers, not, continue waiting in hope of even higher
prices. Seems to be repetitive over the course of time.
The article also points out the need of local merchants to be "paid for their
crop" as well.
Although it might be possible the article was taken from a recent addition of
the Record. In fact however, the article was written September 20, 1893.

All things considered;

What might we guess, would the French charge us for fries? There is a bright
side to "fair trade". We will eventually find out if all the halla-ballu about
illegal use of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides will have any negative
effect on our nations health. We will also have the peace of mind knowing
children and individuals working for "slave labor" wages. Will be providing us
with nourishment.
Fair trade,... there's no such thing. It's a nice term used by some
politicians to camouflage a corrupt process for their own personal gain. Fair
trade,.....there's no such thing. It's a process developed by politicians out
of ignorance of the process. Fair trade,....is the exchange of a boulder for a

Subject: SHIVERCITY GAZETTE
CURRENT WEATHER:
It's 4 degrees outside under a cloudy sky. We received a light dusting of
snow overnight. Just enough snow to keep snowmobile dealers humble. Not enough
to sell snowmobile.

MAJOR LOCAL EVENT:
Century Elementary Holiday Program.
Pat and I attended the 7:00pm presentation of our Grandson Dilans' Holiday
(school) Program. It's hard to believe that only a few short years ago. The
same function would have been called a Christmas program. It's always
wonderful watching the nations future walk on stage. In some ways, it reminds
me of the "grand march" in miniature, on prom night. Even though we know, it's
the children ages 6 through 11 years old, walking up on stage. It's difficult
not to envision a few mothers, imaginations, walking up there at the same
time.
I seems store bought hair styles and homecoming gowns are becoming more and
more popular at grade school programs.
I'm humbled by the patients and fortitude required to "nurture" our young to
adulthood. I'm always impressed by the knowledge gained, by the youngest, of
our school age children. As we entered the auditorium, it was obvious. That
facility was being directed by individuals that truly love working with our
young folks. It was apparent, that our future leaders, were being nurtured and
taught by a special group of people we have come to know as "Teachers".
I watched as one little tyke began showing signs of fright in front of the
audience. A "teacher" (Mrs Lindenberg) graciously approached the little fellow.
She took him by the hand and brought him to the bleachers. Then, she sat right
down on the floor with him. Rebuilding his confidence, without destroying his
self-esteem.
It's entirely possible, that one simple act, may well have changed that little
persons future significantly.
I watched how Mrs Boura, the schools music instructor, acted, interacted and
reacted to the children in her charge. I observed how intently many of the
students watched their director. I was impressed when Mrs. Boura brought back
"the alumni" (6th graders) for one selection.
I did enjoyed the entire presentation. I must admit however, too listen to
that group of youngsters sing "American Tears" was delightful beyond words.

There is not as much difference between Arizona and North Dakota as one would
think. As I understand it (Thanks Mert) It costs 1.46 for a gallon gas to mow
the grass, in Arizona. If they had grass there. It only cost 1.50 a gallon to
blow snow, in North Dakota, and, we do have snow here. And so it goes.

River Valley roads lately.
They're hauling the Valleys life blood to local factories to be processed. (in
my opinion) If the Valley loses the Sugarbeet industry, all that would remain
is a good place to store rabbit dung. Laugh if you like, but first consider
this. If we do not produce sugar in the United States. How long do you think a
country that "charges" their citizens 40 & more cents a pound for sugar, will
sell it to us for less.

Subject: SHIVERCITY GAZETTE
The temperature is 30 degrees under a cloudy sky. Last night someone put an
inch of snow on my driveway. That's a million dollar snowfall in New York City.
I doubt the Anderson boys will get quite that much cleaning off the Western
Plaza parking lot.

SHOPPING DAYS:
Only two shopping Saturdays days til Christmas. Over the years I have
"created" numerous wish lists for Christmas. I don't remember for certain,
however, I suspect one of my first Christmas wishes was for a clean diaper and
a full bottle of milk. Next may have been a sleigh or toboggan.
I remember in the third grade wanting a peddle airplane like the Lamont kids
had. In the fourth or fifth grade I thought I needed ski's and ski poles. I
think I did take the ski's down the river bank at the park once or twice. The
ski poles became spears that we used to throw at the light post on the
corner.
If memory serves me, my Christmas list in sixth grade was so long. I was told
I'll get what I get and like it. That was the Christmas I received the most
memorable gift I ever received. (at home) It was a medal model MG car. It had
soft, air filled tires, actual spring suspension, and a working steering system
just like the real cars had. Dad took it down to Nygards after we finished
building it and had Al (I can't remember his last name) Paint it bright orange.
Darn it was a pretty little car. Gosh I wish I still had it.
For the next couple of years, all I can remember really, really wanting. Was
for Mom to get better. She didn't, she went to Heaven instead. I'm okay with
that now. I wasn't then. I couldn't understand it at all then. I do a little
now. Since our first Christmas as a married couple in 1960. I have had one
wish on the top of every list. That everyone could spend Christmas, healthy and
together. Over the years we have had one or both of those every year.
This year, we'll have our first Great Granddaughter Kylie, with us for her
first Christmas. She will be big enough to really raise heck with the wrapping
paper. Then also number 11 and 12 grandchildren will be here. Jadrian and
Tyler won't be big enough to unwrap their presents. They will of course be able
to let us know when their bottles are empty, and their diapers are full. Now
then, health, and being together will always stay on the top of my list. I
have, however, had additional items on the list.
During our first years of marriage. Things like snow tires, gasoline (I always
had gas) seat covers, and a television set (black & white) took up most of the
room. Them the list slowly began to include really important things. Like snow
cats and stuff like that. Then, as maturity
(age) started taking hold. I put things of a more serious nature on the list.
Things like Crown Royal, (for medicinal purposes) Candy, (chocolate covered
cherries) and any kind of assorted meat and cheese trays were always wonderful
on the dinning room table. Lately, or soon will be, I'm afraid. The number of
desirable food items on my Christmas list will all depend,....on the supply of
depends. ==================================
IT'S BEEN FOUND:
Some may remember a few months ago I reported Norman Lykken had, among
several other things, his beautiful black GMC pickup stolen. I recently
received the following from Norman.

Remember back in Sep. that my black GMC was seen running around No. Dak.? Well
the guy probably could not stand the cold weather because the Sheriff found it
Fri. and I have it back after 3 Months. It was reincarnated. No damage, except

L O C A L N E W S: July 13, 1953
Mr. and Mrs Jim Lamont and Mr. and Mrs Truman Mattson had a harrowing
experience at Lake of the Woods during the Fourth when they were stranded on
Pine Island from 10 a. m. to 8 p. m. After two hours of fishing a storm struck
and they were able to make their way to the island, arriving there thoroughly
soaked. Trees were bent over from the 60-mile-an-hour wind and sand crept into
the picnic lunch they had packed for the day. The resort owner that had rented
them the boat sent out a plane to attempt to locate them and flew low to
attempt to give them instructions. About three o'clock in the afternoon three
fellows stranded on the other side of the island wandered over and asked if
they could buy some food, since they had had nothing to eat since morning. In
the group were Gerald Goetz of Hensel, former Grafton athlete, and two friends
from Cavalier. The Graftonites were very willing to share their sand-laden
lunch! Jim and Truman had already taken the motor apart, when they found it
would not start, but it was ruined by the water. The boat had sustained a large
crack from the pounding of the waves. A resort launch battled out and picked
up the ladies first, returning immediately for the men. Goetz and his party
were guests at a different part of the lake and the lake at their end calmed
down about 6 o'clock when they made for camp. A bit apprehensive, the party
started conserving their matches along in the afternoon, with the thought in
mind that they might have to be overnight guest on the island. A final check of
boats, after they came in, revealed that one party, that included and elderly
and a young couple, were still out and they were rescued from Pine Island about
5 a. m. the next morning.

quarter) and headed across the alley to Gladys Watkins house. When she opened
the door, I wanted to say, "here Gladys, this is for a wonderful person and a
great neighbor." I wanted to say, "these roses are for a person that
understands what it feels like to have problems". I wanted to tell Gladys
Watkins, that the night before, I felt so stupid, foolish, and out of place and
for a awhile, I wasn't sure I would ever get over it. I wanted to say, "Then
you saved my honor, you allowed me to leave the Legion club with pride."
Yes, I really did want to say that. Unfortunately, I didn't. I did say thank
you. I did say I would never forget her. I just wished, as I left her doorstep,

Mr. and Mrs Jim Lamont and Mr. and Mrs Truman Mattson had a harrowing
experience at Lake of the Woods during the Fourth when they were stranded on
Pine Island from 10 a. m. to 8 p. m. After two hours of fishing a storm struck
and they were able to make their way to the island, arriving there thoroughly
soaked. Trees were bent over from the 60-mile-an-hour wind and sand crept into
the picnic lunch they had packed for the day. The resort owner that had rented
them the boat sent out a plane to attempt to locate them and flew low to
attempt to give them instructions. About three o'clock in the afternoon three
fellows stranded on the other side of the island wandered over and asked if
they could buy some food, since they had had nothing to eat since morning. In
the group were Gerald Goetz of Hensel, former Grafton athlete, and two friends
from Cavalier. The Graftonites were very willing to share their sand-laden
lunch! Jim and Truman had already taken the motor apart, when they found it
would not start, but it was ruined by the water. The boat had sustained a large
crack from the pounding of the waves. A resort launch battled out and picked
up the ladies first, returning immediately for the men. Goetz and his party
were guests at a different part of the lake and the lake at their end calmed
down about 6 o'clock when they made for camp. A bit apprehensive, the party
started conserving their matches along in the afternoon, with the thought in
mind that they might have to be overnight guest on the island. A final check of
boats, after they came in, revealed that one party, that included and elderly
and a young couple, were still out and they were rescued from Pine Island about
5 a. m. the next morning.

Not much going on in Shivercity. The dollar store, not the new one, the old
one. The one where things are going the second time around. Not the second time
around store, in the old Grafton National Bank building. The one in the
Hallmark Greeting Card store. Not the present Hallmark Greeting Card store. The
Hallmark Greeting Card store the Brekkes used to run, in the former Fish's
Variety store. It will be easy to find. It's the only store front on main
street with a ragged, tattered, and torn, awning in front of it.
I'm not sure who the present proprietor is. I'm not even sure who presently
owns the building. I am sure, the bedraggled looking, torn up, awning blowing
in the wind. Is not a welcome invitation to a main street business. If I'm not
mistaken, I think I've read something about that awning somewhere before. I am
also not absolutely certain we have the means, or the personnel to correct the
above main street eyesore. However, and I'm way out on a limb here, I'd be
willing to wager. If the current proprietor, or, the present owner of that
establishment would call 352-0528 the fellow on the other end would take care
of it. If he hasn't got the time, or a sharp knife. Call 1-800-To-Louie.

I have given some thought to expanding the Gazette. Actually, someone else
put the thought in my head. It seems I have an offer for a SPORTS EDITOR to
join the Gazette staff. At first, I thought it was a super idea. Then, it was
suggested that I pay the individual, and, provide an expense account. AND, pay
for travel and entertainment.
Does anyone want to guess when this person will "come on board?"

anyway?) (and, where is Watford City?)

I'm reminded of a time last summer when a boat, from a very large auction,
pulled up along side us in front of Rocky Point. The driver and his passionate
passenger leaned over the side and said. "We just launched this thing over at
Warroad." Is this still the Lake of the Woods?"
I wanted so bad to ask. "Do you remember driving over any land to get here?"
Instead I gave what I thought, at the time, was an intelligent answer. "No," I
said, "this is Arnesen's Rocky Point." "Why," as I continued to expound on my
stupidity. "Do you need gas?" Nope, said the lady with little left to the
imagination. We just wanted to be sure we weren't lost already.
The moral: Often, it's more difficult to see things right in front of us, than
things from far away. ==================================
The "TWINS" not the Minnesota ones.
As I stated yesterday morning. I had to cut the Gazette short so we could take
care of Jadrian and Tyler. (Twins) Gosh it was fun,......and work. I don't
remember taking care of new borns as being so much work. Actually, I don't
remember taking care of new borns, two at a time.
Yesterday in Reader Digest form. 9:00am both of the little tykes are hungry.
I offered to take Jadrian but was told by a resident expert, Tyler is a whole
lot easier to burp. So I took Tyler. Tyler, I soon found out, takes twice as
long (sometimes longer) to drink his 2½ ounce bottle. It's 9:15 and Jadrian has
eaten, burped, pooped, had a diaper change and is walking around the house with
gramma cooing and making google eyes at her.
At 9:25 Tyler finished the first half of his bottle. I sat him up, and sure
enough. He burped before I could pat him on the back one time. As I laid him
back down for the other half of his bottle. The sounds of nature began
emanating from his diaper. After a couple of grins, (caused by natural gas,)
Tyler put a vacuum on his bottle that a calf on a dairy farm could envy. At 9:
40, Ty's bottle was empty,....and his diaper was full.
Yup, (that's Norwegian for I don't do diapers,...yet) It was time to trade
Gramma for Jadrian. As I put Jad in my arms she was sleeping (like a baby).
Then wouldn't you know it. I had to go and wake her up with my darn shaking
hand.
The shake in my right hand (for babies) is a good news bad news type of
problem. It seems to help the little folks go to sleep easier. Unfortunately,
when their asleep, it seems to wake them up. Anyway. Our day was consumed by
three feedings and associated child rearing duties. I should add, I negotiated
a deal with Gramma that allowed me to feed Jadrian the next two feedings.
Jadrian, being the oldest (by a minute) eats the most, and the fastest. She
should, she's the oldest. She doesn't make nearly as much noise in her diaper.
She shouldn't, she's a lady. She is a little bigger than Tyler, and she should
be. She is the oldest.
I have, however, drawn one conclusion already. If she continues to eat the way
she is. I may well have to enroll her in Curves by spring. The "official"
weighing isn't until Tuesday. I'm betting she's going to be a whole 6 pounds by
then. I sure hope so. Did I mention how cute they are?

Julie has used every one of her years, growing up, raising a family, tolerating
Tommy and being an absolutely wonderful individual. A person Pat and I are
extremely proud of.

According to word received yesterday regarding Shivercitys In-continent Cable
Tv Company. I'm lead to believe, If, you were not receiving the smut channel
(Showtime) # 3 when the latest "conversion" took place. You will not be able to
receive Shivercity's local channel. Presently being aired on channel 3.
I suppose, (In-Continent) being as small a company as it is. Hasn't been able
to prepare for the conversion. The way a larger, more professional,
organizasion would. We should all be thankful that The In-Continant folks
worked over time getting us the Grand Cities local channel.
Although, I haven't talked to everyone in Shivercity. The two people I did
talk to, think the cable channel conversion project in a word, "sucks". I hate
that word,.... but vaccum just doesn't go directly to the point. I did receive
a note from the chamber office. The word from there is much more political.
And, probably more direct.

I am sorry to say I've, finally heard from someone negative about the box and
sign at the park exit. The sign says, "donations accepted, not expected". To
me, the sign says it all. To those that find fault with it. Please, in the
interest of public unity and high blood pressure. Don't go through, and don't
enjoy, the park.
We have made one stop at the box already. I plan on doing it again, a few more
times, before the season ends. It would be a little easier to use the drop
box, if it was more like the one for the city light bill.

Wife of original SMOKY'S of Ardoch owner dies at 83.
Most readers of the Gazette, remember Smoky's as the bar in Ardoch, ND where
Obed Williamson featured his famous 52 ounce steak. According to the obituary
of Barbara Kennedy Schultz (Florian "Smoky" Schultz) they operated the North
Dakota landmark for 50 years. Selling it in 1985. Barbara was an accomplished
piano player.
I remember one time, standing at the base of the stairs in the "old" Legion
building. (I was too young to go upstairs) Listening to Mrs. Smoky Schultz play
the piano. I remember dad telling someone, George Scharwark I think, that if
they weren't making so darn (I cleaned that up a bit) much money in Ardoch. She
could easily play in the "big time". Florian (Smoky) and their six children
survive. ==================================
Does anyone remember Dallis Bylin's "Saint & Sinners"? I can still see Gladys
Watkins weaving between tables in the basement of the old Legion club. She
could hold a tray with four servings of Saint & Sinners above the crowd without
spilling a drop of butter. I was always amazed how Gladys could work a full
shift, in such crowded conditions, and finish the day without a hair out of
place. She not only had a flawless hairdo, she raised a super bunch of children
as well. =================================
It's getting to be the time of year for all the "ethnic" holiday dishes.
Being half Norwegian, I'm very please the half I was given likes Lefsa, and not

The Grafton chapter (division) of Curves has moved into it's new home in
Western Plaza. Between Subway and Denny's Calorie Coral.
I'm not sure what "Curves" stands for. Maybe something like; Customers Using
Really Vibrant Exercise Systems. Then again, maybe not.

Gosh, am I ever pleased Mid-continent, or, is it in-continent? changed our
cable TV channels around. I spent 20 minutes this morning waiting for Kelly
Rippa and Regis to come on. Then I realized I was watching the animal channel.
Our "new" local channel disappeared in the shuffle. I understand it will come
back and can be found behind the number three (3).

Now then,... we are blessed with another Grand Forks commercial invasion of
our homes. Channel 6, used to be a Canadian station. Incontinent, in their
infinite wisdom. Has decided we would sooner watch another "Pay-for-commercial"
channel.
After everything is done and said, or read. It may not be as bad as it sounds.
For example, One of the "adds on channel six (6) is for a "Firefighter" for the
city of Grand Forks. NOW GET THIS, Grand Forks will pay $30,986 to $38,732 for
A (that's one) Firefighter.
Well dog bite my unite. My son, and thousands of other "Volunteers", do it for
FREE, and then pay for their own vehicles and gas to get to the fire hall.
People like Eddie & Alvin Mattson, Hugo Kutz, Wally DeSautel, Richard Larson
and many more, far to numerous to mention. All have spent most of their life
fighting fires in our community for free. If the truth be known, they actually
paid to do it. Thanks again Jeff, and all the rest of you volunteer
Firefighters, Ambulance and rescue people. ==================================
I just received word that Wayne Coulthart went over to Crookston today with
his four wheeler to help in the search for Dru Sjodin. Early this morning there
were already over 500 four wheelers assembled for the search. I'm not sure if,
or how many others from Grafton are participating. I do know Wayne is the kind
of person that will represent us well. Thanks Wayne from the Moe family.

The piece about Wayne Coulthart and his four wheeler. Is the second time in
my memory I have touched on miniature four wheel vehicles. The first time was
when my friend, (at least he was before this) Keith Bjorneby received a
citation for driving across a road checking fields on one. It's kind of ironic
isn't it. I'll bet today, Wayne and his group, will be told to cover every
square inch of ground they can. ==================================
In the interest of a better living. The federal government has funded a
project to determine IF in fact, using chopsticks will contribute to arthritis.
HOLY SMOKERS! You get tunnels in your carpet from typing (I have them) and now
I'm going to get stiff in a joint from chopsticks. I wonder what the end
result of sipping tea is going to be? We've all heard what you get from breast
milk, Right? ==================================
I received word from a person that has already fished the Upper Red Lake
recently. the note follows:

were one of the first to drive out this year, there was only one other vehicle
out fishing. Only caught 2 crappies, but the walleye fishing was unbelievable.
Catch and release as it is illegal to keep any walleyes caught on URL since
they are just starting to come back after they restocked it, but when that lake
opens it will have some of the best walleye fishing in the area, if not the
nation. We were throwing back 3 lb. plus walleyes. Lots of fun. Have a fine day
today.<<<<<

the afternoon pulling thorns out of each others lower extremities,....with an
eyebrow tweezers. Anyway, Bill wanted me to wish you happy birthday for him as

It was another one of those nights the tongue sticks to the flag pole.

If your having trouble finding the weather channel while visiting Shivercity.
Look for it on Channel 22 NOT channel 9 as it has been forever. I'm guessing
they figured the local Norwegians had the old weather channel number memorized
so they changed it. To keep us in the dark. Only God, and the cable man, knows
what happened to our local channel. ==================================
As I entered Leistikow Park last night. I noticed Santa and Frosty were still
sleeping. (flat on the ground) I'm sure John is in the process of ordering a
new load of sail boat fuel for them. It would be a shame not to get them up and
waving again ASAP.

If you haven't been through the Park yet. Your missing a beautiful sight.
This year, one of the main features is. The worlds largest decorated telephone.
(Polar telephone didn't coin that phrase, I did)

Wouldn't it be cool, if someone, somehow, could figure out a way to have
"holiday music" in the park?

Yesterday, Sami and me were driving down main street. I noticed several
people shopping and walking across main street. I think having Embroidery Plus
in the former Valley Jewelry building helped the "look" of down town.
Then, I noticed main street itself. After a few snowfalls, a little freezing
rain, and the need to sand and salt intersection so local body shops don't get
overworked. (right Dale?) Main street is covered with a layer of sand, the
folks at Miami would love to have on their beach. I know sweeping streets in
the winter can be a real "bugger" at best. I know because I have done it,
several times. But I'd be willing to bet, with a little thought and a some
effort. Graftons downtown streets could be made significantly more appealing.
If we expect our community to grow. It should "look" like we are expecting
company. ==================================
The TWINS (Jadrian and Tyler)
Last night Pat and I went over, for just a minute. They were both wide awake.
I got Jadrian and Pat got Tyler. I won't waste space saying their cute.
However, as I looked into Jadrians beautiful, perfectly round eyes. I thanked
God, for the miracle of birth. I thought about how precious life is, and, the
responsibility of mankind to protect it. I thought about Scott Woinarowicz and
his wife, my cousin, Denise. Gosh I hope what we are doing in Iraq is the right
thing. Golly I hope all of our troops return home soon. Then Jadrian burped,
she made a funny face that, I was told, was caused from gas. (I don't, always,
smile when I have gas) Then she settled back down again and looked around at
the Christmas lights that decorate their home.
Tyler, on the other hand. Seems to continue to take after his father. He
always seems to be looking around, and he's mastered the art of hickuping.
Yesterday afternoon, I'm told. Ty baptized his Aunt Kelly,.... big time. That's
the second time Kelly has been in Ty's "line of fire".
Maybe Tyler is going to be a fire fighter, like his Uncle Jeff, when his
bladder gets big.

Why can't gas be priced to the even cents? Ever wonder why, when gas sells for
$1.50.9 most folks say gas a $1.50 a gallon? When in reality it's darn near
$1.51.
Why is it that all the other numbers in the price of gas changes, but not the .
9? With all of the competition in the retail gas market today. And, as keen as
that market must be at times. Why hasn't some young aggressive businessman set
his price at $1.50.4 or something? Just a thought.
